A AIREBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB ‘MY YORKSHIRE’ OPEN COMPETITION There has been a terrific response to this year’s competition and this has provided the judges with a difficult but pleasurable task in making the final decisions. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Meanwood and Oakwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show

how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

AUTUMN IMAGES Autumn, the season of mists and glorious colours - the yellows, oranges and reds add a golden light to any scene and a golden glow to your pictures. There are so many opportunities for capturing the beauty of this season, from wild, wide landscapes, water reflections, early mornings and evenings, to close ups of fruit, flowers and leaf mosaics. You are taking pictures of what pleases you and so decide what it is you particularly like about what you are looking at and set your camera accordingly, or just snap it with your phone or camera before it disappears, the same shot will not occur again. With digital do not be afraid of taking a number of shots, you can always

delete ones which do not come out as you want. For getting atmosphere into your pictures go out early mornings, dawn, or sundown. The sun is low in the sky and orange tones predominate. Early mornings, before the day warms up, have mists in the valleys and woodlands giving atmosphere and mystery. Shooting into the sun should be tried and can, with care, produce some startling sunburst effects if you can get an object e.g. tree between the sun and the lens, it can certainly add the ‘wow’ factor. Backlighting and mist in woodland can create atmospheric shafts of sunlight. Autumn is the time when there is an abundance of colourful fungi, fruits and multi-coloured leaf patterns,

so do not be afraid to get down on your knees or tummies and get up close. It is also the time when crops are harvested, when hay is cut and baled which produce interesting lines. Still water in lakes, ponds or canals is ideal for capturing reflections of surrounding colours and shooting lowdown near the waters edge can create symmetrical compositions. Long exposures will help smooth out rough or moving water, but ripples can create interesting distortions. For long exposures support your camera on a tripod, a wall, fence post, top of your car or hold firmly and lean against something solid like a tree. If the sun comes out, get out with your camera. Good luck. Aireborough Camera Club aireboroughcameraclub.co.uk

LOCAL NEWS BIRDWATCHING WHILE STANDING STILL It's the start of autumn migration and, over the next few weeks, birds will be making their way to their winter feeding grounds. It's the time when unusual birds can turn up on your local birdwatching patch, or even in your garden, so keep your eyes peeled. Here’s where some simple birdwatching techniques can help. As birds move south, they sometimes latch onto feeding parties of common birds. A good birdwatching technique is to ‘work’ your way through each group of birds to see whether you can spot something unusual. This might be something you’d normally do when sitting in a hide at a reserve but try to get into the habit of doing this while walking in your local woodland. If see a group of birds moving around, or hear some coming towards you, lean against a tree to obscure your outline and let them come to you. If you keep perfectly still, you’ll be able to get a good look at each bird. Most will be young blue tits, long-tailed tits and great tits but there is a chance you’ll see something else. Similarly, take a bit of time to study the species of birds using your garden as a feeding station. Remember last month’s lesson? The first rule of thumb is to remember that there are a lot of juvenile common birds around at this time of year. 16 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Redstart

Spotted Flycatcher

Some can look quite different to their parents, so do take a good field guide out with you. This should give you a good illustration of juvenile birds for each species. It would be well worth swatting up on the young common birds likely to be seen in your chosen habitat before you go out. It will save time when you're in the field. Most of the tatty adult common birds in woodlands will have almost completed their moult by now. However most ducks are still in ‘eclipse’ (that is what we call the moulting stage of ducks). Think common first then consider something scarce.

I had a cuckoo in my garden for a few seconds as it tried to escape being mobbed by crows on its journey southwards. My best garden tick yet! I also get grey wagtails at my pond every year.

Some of the birds to look out for in our woodlands and gardens during the autumn migration are chiffchaff, willow warbler, wood warbler, blackcap, goldcrest, redstart, spotted flycatcher and pied flycatcher. Make sure that you look at all the birds coming to your garden feeders. If you have a good sized pond, or you’re visiting an area with a pond or a stream, you may find a sedge warbler, a common sandpiper or a dispersing grey wagtail. A couple of years ago

Good luck! If you have a good camera and you think you may have seen something unusual then please do send me a photo. Next time I’ll tell you more about migration.

Young dippers and kingfishers disperse from their nest sites and travel downstream making your urban stretch of water a possible feeding area for a time. Fields with grazing cattle or horses could also attract passing yellow wagtails. They feed on insects that are attracted to dung. Look for them around the hooves and mouths of the grazing animals.

LOCAL NEWS LEEDS STREET PLAY We’re lucky in Leeds to have the opportunity to work on a huge range of projects to make the city a more accessible and exciting place for children and young people to live. Some of our current activities are focusing on the importance of play, and giving kids the chance to be outside and get active while staying safe. Of course back when many of the people reading this were younger we would always be out paying with friends in the street, but time’s moved on and the huge volume of traffic is just one reason why this is more difficult these days. That’s why Leeds City Council is working with Play England and Leeds Play Network on an active street play project to make it easier for children to play out by supporting local residents to close their streets at regular intervals weekly or monthly, typically for two or three hours after school or at the weekend. Of course residents will still have the access they need but the street would be completely closed to all through traffic. It’s still relatively early days with

this initiative but hopefully more and more communities will take advantage of it so children can reap the physical, social, emotional and mental health benefits offered by outdoor play whilst at the same time making them a visible part of the wider community. Residents who have already made street play a regular feature of their neighbourhood have welcomed an increase in community cohesion as people gather to organise and deliver the sessions. The street play initiative in Leeds

ALWOODLEY REVIEW Dan, Peter and I were summoned recently to be told about plans for economies on street lighting. The council has been looking at each ward and it’s our turn. Highways officials have suggested places where lights could be switched off; this will only happen between midnight and 5.30 a.m. and about 92% of lights will not be changed. We were asked to comment on the 8% that might be affected and we found four areas where we had doubts. These are going back on again. The changes start in September and on balance we think the ideas are sensible. However, we will be interested in any local problems and we are assured that the lights with the early hours switchoff can be switched on again. If you come across

was launched in May this year and initial feedback shows it has been well received with plenty of communities taking up the offer and children and residents enjoying the street play experience. If your community would like to get involved Leeds Play Network can offer support and practical help. a problem, contact any of us and we will take it up. We would also like to hear of your experiences with bus services in Alwoodley. We have meetings with the operators and they tell us they are interested in our comments, which are not always entirely favourable. (In truth, they are almost never favourable- people don’t remember buses that turn up on time). However, we can’t turn up and say we just don’t like the service; we must have details of specific buses that are late, didn’t turn up, went the wrong way (it happens) or where the driver drove for two miles while talking on his mobile phone (that has happened as well). We’ll happily grumble for you but detailed grumbles are more useful than general ones. Cllr Neil Buckley

TOP TIPS FOR MARKETING YOUR HOME 1 Choose the right estate agent. The estate agent who suggests the highest asking price for your home may not be the best. You want to set the asking price realistically to attract buyers in the first days that your house goes on the market. . Additionally ensure they market your property in all the right places, a High Street presence remains vital, as does local knowledge together with extensive internet coverage with rightmove and Zoopla essential as they are the two largest property websites.

out and making the garden look as good as possible. Again with each and every viewing make sure the property is spick and span.

2 First impressions count massively, ensure your agent uses quality photography and prepare your house for the photos, removing clutter, having the best bed linen

4 If there are some little jobs to do, do them! The smallest job can make buyers believe the house has been neglected and sows seeds of doubt into their minds that

5 A general rule of thumb is spend around 1% of the value of your property getting it ready to market, be it decorating, gardening or carpeting, it all helps. We recently had a property we initially valued at £225,000 and advised the vendor to re-decorate and re-carpet. The vendor took our advice and spent just under £3000 on the property, but it worked fabulously as we promptly sold it for £240,000!!

Guy Morfitt of Morfitt Shaw gives Suburban Magazine his views on the current market in North Leeds: “The current market is exceptionally strong. Stock levels are the lowest since 1978, when figures were first compiled, and buyer demand is the strongest it has been for eleven years. Most properties we list are sold within a week, with about half going to sealed bids because of competing offers. It certainly is a seller's market at the moment Morfitt Shaw 80 Street Lane Tel 0113 393 0113 morfittshaw.co.uk

3 make sure your house fits the season, if it's summer open the windows, if it's winter make sure the heating's on and it feels cosy, a roaring open fire is also a big plus. Don't go down the old route of having fresh bread baking of fresh coffee on, buyers are wise to the old tricks and may think you have something to hide.

there are bigger jobs to do.

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

The long summer nights will soon be ending, so it is time to look slightly ahead to autumn tasks. You lawn may have been used for many activities over the summer, so it is time to scarify (rake) all the moss and dead material out. Then give it a cut at a different angle to normal, which will catch all the creeping grasses which have been lifted when raking. Next, take a garden fork and spike all the heavy traffic areas, four inches deep every nine inches. This is followed by an autumn lawn food, which stimulates the roots without making the grass grow taller. If you have any bare patches, over sow with a good grass seed, and fill any hollows with fine soil in Âź inch layers.

vegetable crops, storing onions, potatoes etc in a dark cool space for use over the winter. Have a good check on your winter crops, such as sprouts, cabbages and kale etc, to ensure they are well staked if they have grown tall. Make sure the soil is firm around their stems, and ensure any covers are well secured to keep your crops safe from birds and animals. Lift small sections of any herbs you particularly like to cook with, and place them in reasonable size pots in good compost on the kitchen windowsill. Compost bins should be filled in six inch layers, using all the spent plants and garden rubbish – then adding egg boxes and crumpled newspaper in between. The use of a compost accelerator is highly recommended, as this will speed up the decomposition of the plant material into good useful compost.

In the flower garden, continue to remove sweet pea seed pods to prolong flowering, and feed your dahlias every two weeks to build up the tubers. As your summer bedding plants finish flowering, remove everything and replant with winter/ spring plants like wall flowers and winter pansies. Daffodils and crocuses may also be incorporated in your designs, using different heights of flowering bulbs in drifts for dramatic effect. Start to harvest the last of your summer 24 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
