FEEDING GARDEN BIRDS PART 1: AKA “I ONLY EVER GET PIGEONS” People are always coming to tell me that they put out food to attract birds but they only ever get pigeons. If this sounds like you then you’ll be pleased to hear that you can change that. Here’s what could be happening. Firstly, I’m guessing that you’re trying to cut costs. That’s understandable, bird food isn’t cheap and, once you’ve started putting food out for the birds you’re bound to feel that you want to keep doing it. Am I right? So you shop around for the least expensive food you can find in the hope that you can keep your feeders full all the year round. Well my bird loving friends, I can see that this is well intentioned but by buying that inexpensive food (from your local garden centre or discount store) you can almost guarantee that it is packed with wheat, corn and flaked maize. The very thing that pigeons love! Most of the inexpensive bird food sold by large retail outlets is bulked up with wheat, corn, biscuit meal and flaked maize, The high energy seed, preferred by the small wild birds that you’re wanting to attract, is only found in low proportions. Your little birds will throw out all the food they don’t like and will only eat the good stuff. You’ve probably seen them doing this. Here’s another reason...The inexpensive food is likely to be stored in large warehouses for a very long time. There is no guarantee that the storage conditions are cool enough to keep oil rich foods from turning rancid and dry enough to deter moulds from growing. Your small birds may find this food unpalatable and may bypass your garden feeders in favour of someone else’s. If you’re buying peanuts from the same place, then your feeders could be a source of aspergillus mould which creates the deadly aflatoxins responsible for killing wild birds. And here’s another reason... If you’ve filled up your feeders with predominantly wheat

8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Not the only type of winged guest you can attract!

and corn and all your target species have turned up their little beaks at what’s on offer at your feeding station, your food will certainly go off very quickly and further deter the birds from visiting. You’ll watch in earnest in the hope that something stops by but your food will be on the least wanted list. So, what’s the solution? Well, if you think about how much food is going to waste by continuing to buy bird food in this way, and how little you’re actually helping the small birds, it may not surprise you to hear that you can make a big difference by changing your supplier. Buy high quality bird food from a reputable dealer. Check out my blog Duckwoman’s Diary for more on this topic and details of suppliers. The food bought from them will contain a variety of oil rich seeds which have been carefully sourced and stored in optimal conditions. Pretty soon you’ll be encouraging a range of garden birds to your feeders which will give you no end of enjoyment over the winter months. Don’t worry if you still get one or two pigeons, they’ll clean up underneath your feeders and deter rodents. In Part 2, we’ll look at the types of food available, how to attract different species to your garden and when to put out food. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Meanwood and Oakwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show

how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

DIABETES EDUCATION PROGRAMME A BIG HIT Diabetes may be known as the silent killer but thanks to a Public Health funded programme delivered by health organisation Touchstone, one of the groups most at risk are benefiting from practical education and advice. Local Councillor Jane Dowson visited the Al Khidmat Centre on Spencer Place, Chapel Allerton, to see for herself the results of an intensive eight week course highlighting

Councillor Dowson with community members who took part in the course and some of the organisers, enjoying the healthy food they had prepared.

the benefits of healthy eating and exercise. Evidence shows that South Asian people are up to six times more likely

. . p ho

to have diabetes than the white population and so the course has been developed to help raise awareness and promote self-management of long term conditions such as diabetes. Language can be a barrier on courses such as this and so a translator was available throughout the sessions to ensure everyone got the most out of it. Councillor Dowson was able to listen to what the local residents thought they had learnt from the course and also sample some of the healthy food they had been cooking.

LOCAL NEWS IT'S EASY TO IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE Did you know that by wiggling your toes and stretching your feet each morning and swaying from side to side it can help prevent stiffness and balance issues? Most people suffer from dizziness at some point in their lives; but while our instinct is to sit down to resolve the problem, in fact we should keep moving. Top advice from a Leeds Neuro-physiotherapist is to ‘gradually return to physical activity rather than trying to prevent episodes of dizziness by becoming inactive.’ This will not give the balance system the input it needs to learn to compensate for the problem, instead by still continuing to do as much as we can (without triggering severe dizziness) we allow the system to learn to compensate. It is worth noting, however, that a few people who have sustained balance problems may benefit from medical investigations and/or physiotherapy treatment.

“Maintaining balance is a complex function,” said Jill Fisher, Principle physiotherapist from Leeds Neurophysiotherapy. “Information comes from three main sources; the inner ear, vision and position sense from muscles and joints, particularly in our spine and legs especially feet.” “These systems give us an awareness of where our body is in relationship to the environment. “In different circumstances different weighting is given to the different senses so in the dark we must rely more on our inner ear system and information from the muscle and joint systems less from our visual system.” Jill shared that a top tip if your balance is poor, is to help your visual system to compensate by keeping some lights on at night and be aware that in visually unstable environments (such as in crowds) your balance will be more compromised as vision will not be able to compensate so well

for problems involving the other systems. Another top tip is to ‘pep up’ the information coming from muscles and joints by preventing stiffness, by carrying out gentle exercises in moving feet and toes through a full range of movement. Also, standing and swaying side to side is an exercise that can be really effective at improving balance especially if carried out with the eyes closed; initially carry out touching a stable support in front of you. The advanced form of this exercise is standing with feet close together or standing on one leg. If you feel physiotherapy may help you with balance problems, you can ask your doctor to refer to an NHS service, or go directly to a private neurological or vestibular specialist physiotherapy practice.

SHORT STORIES

CHAPTER TWO: THE BIG DAY

‘Really big boxes?’ I screamed and hugged Mam, ‘What else have we got? Is it a surprise?’

Mam got us all some knickers, socks and vests but Steven didn’t get any knickers.

Written by Alison Craven (extract from an un-published novel)

She told me to simmer down; it was the furniture and stuff.

‘I will die if the catalogue stuff doesn’t come today,’ I said to Mam.

‘Furniture?’ and I started singing I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts, but Mam gave me one of her looks so I went and got the bogey.

Then our Linda got all stroppy because she’d only got knickers, socks and vests so my mam said she could have my Baker-Boy hat. I said that was not fair because it was part of my Scarf Coat and it was a complete outfit.

‘Get on with your breakfast, Susan and stop talking silly.’ Every single day me and our Linda were puffed out when we got home and still the new stuff hadn’t come. It was as if I’d been waiting my whole entire life and every day nothing at all. And then one day I told our Linda we were not going to run and get giddy because then, if God thought we didn’t care anymore, then he’d deliver the stuff and we would have fooled Him. He didn’t, so we went back to being giddy and running and then we decided it was a dream and because we were sisters and slept in the same bed, then we had had the same dream and we weren’t getting nothing from the catalogue. Then, on Thursday we got giddy and ran anyway and we could not believe our eyes. THE STUFF HAD COME! Aunty Joan had been round with a box and then my Mam had gone round, three more times with our Steven’s pram while he was asleep and wheeled more boxes back. Mam said before we could open anything, we had to take the bogey we’d found in David Corner’s yard, round to Aunty Joan’s and help with really big boxes. 16 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Me and our Linda could not even speak when we got to Aunty Joan’s – her front yard was ABSOLUTELY FULL of our new three piece suite (brown vinyl with orange moquette cushions) wrapped in polythene, and hundreds of great big and little boxes of surprises. Uncle Brian helped us wheel the bogey home with one chair and then the other but he said it was useless as we couldn’t manage the sofa and he had a mate with a van. At last we were ready. Mam was really smiling and her eyes were shining. She gave me and our Linda a knife each and said, ‘Tuck in.’ But then our Linda left her knife and baby Steven got hold of it so she got a thick ear. She always spoils stuff, does our Linda. I got a Check Scarf Coat in foam-backed Rayon with a matching Baker-Boy hat, a Crimplene Suit in Daffodil with a Neatly Rounded collar, a LowWaisted dress in Cotton with a Hipster Belt and a Delightful dress in Peach and White. I got some white sandals with two Buckles and a Kitten Heel and some black Patent shoes with a Strap. I got a Bri-Nylon Nightie and some Baby Dolls.

Mam said, ‘Don’t be so mean.’ Our Linda did a har-har servesyou-right look. In bed that night I said to her, ‘Adam and Eve and Nipmewell went down to the river to bathe, Adam and Eve got drownded, so who do you think got saved?’ She said, ‘Nipmewell.’ So I did, right hard. Mam got loads of stuff – mini dresses, mini skirts, sleeveless polo necks, a red bra and a black bra, knickers and little tiny baby dolls with red bows. Anyway, I don’t tell a word of a lie when I say she got more clothes than the Queen of Sheba. Then when Uncle Brian’s mate came round with his van we got towels and new candlewick bedspreads, a bedside lamp for Mam’s room, an onyx ashtray on a stand, a fridge with an ice-box, and the new sofa to go with the chairs, bunk beds for me and our Linda, a table and chairs, a radiogram, and twenty million other boxes we weren’t allowed to open, AND, I couldn’t believe my own eyes, AUNTY JOAN’S COCKTAIL CABINET.

SHORT STORIES Our house was like Aladdin’s Cave we had that much stuff but we decided we would save it for the new house. We couldn’t even sit on the sofa and we had to squeeze around all the boxes just to get anywhere; there were even boxes on the stairs and in me and our Linda’s bedroom and my mam and baby Steven’s bedroom. Then we all had the saddest day of our whole lives, but it wasn’t for me. Our Aunty Joan and Uncle Brian were off to Australia. It was so awful. I made them a card out of a Fairy Snow box and I drew Saint Christopher, Patron Saint of Travellers on the front and inside I wrote We WiLl NeVeR fOrGeT yOuR kIdNeEs like that so it looked shop-bought. We went round to wave them off and Aunty Joan gave our family the biggest box full of cans, butter, cheese, jam, half a loaf, a packet of BISCUITS and a bit of BACON and the CATALOGUE for ME! She said she’d left some bits in the house like a coal shuttle because you don’t need coal in Australia and she said we could have first pickings. When Uncle Brian’s friend came in his van to take them to Australia, my Aunty Joan gave us all a kiss and I gave her the card. Her face went all funny and she bit her lip and started to cry then my mam started to cry so me and our Linda did but I couldn’t squeeze out any tears. Then Aunty Joan started sort of quivering and she pushed Mam away and said, ‘I’m laughing, Maureen, laughing, not roaring!’ And she showed Mam my card. ‘We will never forget your kidneys,’ shrieked Aunty Joan 18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

and then my mam fell about laughing and so did our Linda but I just stood there and didn’t even smile and I only waved a bit when they were looking. Mam said I had been very rude by not waving and while she was at it she said me and our Linda had to keep our mouths shut about our new furniture and everything. ‘What goes on in our house stays in our house. Got it?’

bedstead, some lead pipes and the coal scuttle and companion set onto his cart. He gave us a goldfish in a plastic bag. Mam was a bit mad but she gave us a bucket for the fish until we could get a proper fish bowl from my grandma. We couldn’t decide what to call him and so, because he was really mine, I said baby Steven could choose a name. He said, ‘Darb,’ so I called him Goldy.

I nodded and our Linda said, ‘Yes, Mam,’ because she’s a creep. So Mam put her face really close to mine and said, ‘GOT IT?’ And I said, ‘Ye-es, Mam.’ I didn’t know what she was on about but she was always talking in riddles and I had my fingers crossed behind my back. There was a coal scuttle and a knight-in-armour companion set but we didn’t need it with our new underfloor heating so I took it for the rag and bone man. Me and our Linda had collected all sorts of bits and stored it in Mr Baxter’s house next door, as Mam said she didn’t want other people’s junk. We told Mam to tell the rag and bone man to come back if we were at school when he came, but she said she wouldn’t be speaking to no-one and she didn’t want no-one coming to the house. We saw him one day on our way home from school and told him to come to our street as we had loads of old iron for him. We ran really quick before Mam saw us and helped him lift an iron

Me and our Linda and baby Steven walked to my grandma and granddads but they’d given the bowl away so my granddad gave us a big pickled egg jar that he got from the pub. It stunk of vinegar but he said to wash it with a bit of soap and give it a right good rinse or Goldy would die. He gave us a cauli out of his garden and my grandma gave us all a bun. I was pushing the pram because I am the oldest and the sensiblist, our Linda was carrying the big jar, so we gave baby Steven the cauli to hold. He kept throwing it into the gutter and shouting, ‘Caul!’ and laughing. By the time we got home nearly all the green had fallen off and it was all scuffed and mucky looking. ‘What happened to this?’ said Mam. ‘It was baby Steven’s fault,’ I said. Baby Steven just looked gormless. I went to find my stinking catalogue and chucked it under our bed because I didn’t even want it now. Read the final chapter in the next edition of Suburban Magazine

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

The North wind will blow, and we shall have snow, so make sure your garden is ready for this winter weather. Continue to cut down any perennial plants which have finished flowering, removing weeds and fallen vegetation as you work. Are your supports, fences, sheds etc in good condition to withstand winter gales. If you are receiving bare root plants and shrubs for planting now, make sure you prepare the planting hole properly – incorporating plenty of organic matter, old compost or manure. Then add a dressing of long acting fertilizer, such as bone meal or similar to provide the best situation for your new arrivals. If you have a favourite shrub, consider taking cuttings after the last leaves have fallen. Find a shoot about 12” long, then make a straight cut just below a leaf joint. This is followed by a sloping cut, about 8” above. Make a slit trench, with sand in the bottom and place the cutting in to a depth of 6”. Firm the soil down, water if very dry, leaving the area undisturbed until next year. Fruit bushes which have finished fruiting

should be pruned now, with new raspberry and blackberry canes tied to their supporting canes. Autumn fruiting raspberries are normally cut down at the end of next month. All stone fruit should be left unpruned until new growth emerges in the spring. The grass growing on in your lawns will have slowed down with the cooler weather, although if it is growing too long, give it another cut with the lawnmower blades raised slightly higher. Then take your mower to be serviced, or do it yourself. This is also a good time to clean and sharpen all your other garden tools. Finally house plants, reduce their watering to coincide with the darker days, and make sure they are not too close to a window pane as they may be damaged by any cold spells in the night.
