WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS It has been lovely over the past week to have seen ducklings and swans nesting at Yeadon Dam. Very nice to see and I am sure that many other areas will have the same. Any photos would be great to see (hopefully we will be able to print a few in our next edition). We are pleased to have quite a few local community events and carnivals in this month’s edition and hopefully they are all well supported and enjoyed by many (once again photos are always appreciated). If you have any submissions for consideration for our June edition, please email details to editorial@suburbanleeds.co.uk or call Rachel on 0113 819 8141. Many thanks to our valued advertisers and contributors. We will now be working on edition 28 which will deadline on 26/05/17. Thank you Rachel Morgan, Editor

DEDICATED DUO FIND FOREVER HOME You may remember best friends five-yearold Siberian Huskies, Mishka and Darren, who were looking for a forever home together? Well, the Dogs Trust Leeds team are preparing to say a fond farewell to them as they have found their special someone. Can you help a Trailhound be homeward bound? Dogs Trust Leeds is hoping to sniff out a forever home for a ten-year-old Trailhound. Toby arrived at the York Road rehoming centre in January having been retired from hound trail racing, but he’s definitely not ready to rest his paws just yet! Despite being an older gentleman he still has lots of energy and loves nothing more than getting out and about for a good, long walk – he can go for miles! He is also proof that you can teach an older dog new tricks as he loves his food and will do whatever is asked for a tasty treat!

Toby loves his human pals, including Canine Carer at Dogs Trust Leeds Suzie Douglass.

He loves being around his two-legged friends and he has lived with a cat before so may well be able to live with a feline friend. He might take a little time to adjust to living in a home but he can live with a placid canine companion who could show him the ropes and help him find his paws. He is used to having lots of company so at first he would benefit from having owners who are around most of the time so he isn’t home alone. He can live with older children and would be a lovely addition to any family. If you think you could offer Toby his ideal home, please call the centre on 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. You can also find out more at www.dogstrust.org.uk

CHAPEL ALLERTON BIG LUNCH AND COMMUNITY AWARDS Written by Matt Tamplin of cara

The ninth annual Chapel Allerton Big Lunch is taking place along Regent Street on Sunday 18th June. Combined with the Chapel Allerton Awards, this local community event is organised by local, volunteer-run group cara, as part of the national Big Lunch initiative. This year The Big Lunch is also working alongside the Jo Cox Foundation to launch The Great Get Together – encouraging a weekend of community activity in memory of Jo who was tragically murdered 16th June last year. With thousands of similar ‘Big Lunch’ street parties taking place nationwide, local community group cara have taken the Chapel Allerton event a step further, by also organising the Chapel Allerton Awards, which celebrates the best Chapel Allerton has to offer, both community and commercial. With categories from Best Place to Eat and Best Member

of Staff, to Best Neighbour, Contribution to the Community, and the ultimate title of King and Queen of Chapel Allerton, the awards really offer an opportunity for unsung heroes of all aspects of local life to be recognised. Local residents and customers can nominate whoever they like and provide a reason for their nomination, which the cara committee then vote on to decide the winners. The winners will then be announced live at the Chapel Allerton Big Lunch, with certificates and awards presented to the winners. The Big Lunch itself is 12

midday to 5.00pm on Sunday 18th June. Anyone is welcome, with the ‘price’ of entry simply bringing some food to share! Marquees, tables, seating and cutlery are all provided, as are kids games, a BBQ, and live music throughout the day! Be sure to arrive early to get the best food and a seat, and there’ll even be a prize for best dish at 1pm! As well as the Awards and the Big Lunch, cara also organise a range of evening and weekend classes, monthly supper clubs in local eateries, a book club, and other social events such as speed dating and pub quiz. Membership is just £10 for 12 months, with minimum 10% going to charity, and members can use their cara card in almost 100 different shops, bars, restaurants and online businesses in the local area to enjoy excellent discounts, while supporting local and independent businesses. For further information please visit their website www. lovechapelallerton.com, or follow them on Twitter @ caraChapelA (#CAAwards).

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Oakwood and Meanwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show

how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ALWOODLEY REVIEW

Cllr Neil Buckley – Alwoodley Ward

Rubbish and idiots Just before I started to write this – it was going to be about the general election but this is more interesting – I was sent some photographs of the worst fly-tipping ever on Stairfoot Lane (That is the narrow country lane that leads from King Lane to Cookridge). Some idiot had dumped a lorry load of building materials, wood and other rubbish across the road, blocking it to traffic both ways. It

seems to have happened early one morning but, please, if you have any information please tell a police officer or one of the councillors if you prefer. Fly-tipping is contagious; if people get away with it once, they will do it again. Change of subject. How do you feel about the Allerton building on Nursery Lane being converted into a supermarket? This is being proposed and we wonder what you think. If you feel strongly the person to write to is the Director of Planning, Leeds City Council. Councillors

would appreciate a copy of anything you write but the important thing is to write to the Director. Change of subject. There is a suggestion that a new primary school for Roundhay children should be built on the Tree Tops (Shadwell Lane) community centre site. Four possible sites are being considered but this is the only one in our ward. What do you think? Roundhay children? Crossing the Ring Road? Using the football fields? Next to the new assisted living flats? You might guess what we think...

THE DAY OF THE WEDDING by Basil John

‘John …’ his mum is calling across from the far corner of the kitchen, ‘… what if lots of people come back here after the ceremony?’ she is clearing away the breakfast things and has turned to him with a concerned expression on her face, prompting some re-assurance. ‘What’s to worry about Mum, the place is as clean as a new pin including all the cups, saucers and plates. And there’s loads of stuff in the larder … and Tea and Coffee … and milk? There is a pause, while she considers that John will not be coming back today; that, by this evening, he will be married, and will, with a select few friends and his lovely wife be at their new home and that tomorrow she will wake to a quiet and, apart from herself, empty house. ‘It’s the hallway floor’ she blurts ‘I’m sure it’s not safe … all those people … you know the boards hiding beneath the lino are very springy and I can just see your uncle Harold and Jack; and your Aunt Nanne; and Uncle Bert and Florrie and Hilda … everyone coming in by the front door and wiping their feet on the mat to find themselves standing in a pile of splinters with only their heads sticking out, having gone through.’ John could not help smiling, making his Mum continue ‘…stop it …it’s not funny … 12 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Agreed, your uncle Jack would laugh out loud … he can make a joke out of anything … but their clothes … they will be in their best clothes… for the wedding … Your Wedding.’ It is just before nine AM; The Wedding is at two fifteen … there are woodworking tools in a back room and wood a-plenty (too fine for mending floors) among part completed furniture designed and made by John and destined for his new home, but still waiting for an old school friend with an HGV licence and ‘sometimes’ access to a flat-bed lorry. It’s often useful to have a friend with access to a flatbed lorry even though, for this purpose, a Ford Thames van might have been more appropriate. The best man is still some thirty miles away, changing the plugs on his highly tuned Mini, having perfected his umpteenth speech yesterday, a speech he knows he will ignore in favour of an entertaining ad-lib. And in a little while he will be ‘pulled over’ for exceeding the speed limit yet again; and on the same tempting stretch of road as before, but the traffic cop would be the same friendly one; a cop who would, after being informed of ‘The Mission’ would escort the Mini and its enthusiastic driver onward and into a de-restricted zone! The bride to be is wondering where she has ‘hidden’ the ‘Something blue’, but knows in the bottom of her heart that her mum knows. Mums do. Meanwhile her

father is busy looking at his watch to check the time; it’s something he does… all the time … and everyone who knows him wonders why, and imagines that once he must have been late for something really important ... and is now marked for life. The photographer is listening for the telephone … until the last minute … he is a friend of the Groom, but being first and always a news photographer, he is always close to a telephone or listens out for a story … but today, discounting John and Susan’s wedding, it will be a slow news day … and whatever, mobile phones have still to be invented. It is useful to have a reliable friend who can handle a camera or two at a wedding. Later, at the Church and at the Altar, the bride looks, and is, as always ‘amazing’ and when she and her husband-to-be, kneel before the alter, only those in the congregation who are very close will see that her pretty white shoes had cost just One Pound Nine Shillings and eleven pence at Freeman Hardy and Willis… perfect proof that, as well as her elegant white dress, she is wearing ‘Something New’. And her husband? Well, the thumb of his left hand has stopped bleeding and a fresh plaster is hidden safely in his suit pocket. Just in case. So, all is well until all the photographs outside the church have been taken, when he and his ‘Best man’ realise they have forgotten the coins needed to pay the children to unfasten the lychgate and no-one can leave.

OUR SWIFTS NEED YOUR HELP The first week of May is the traditional arrival time for swifts at their nest sites in Leeds. It’s an exciting and uplifting time for swift lovers, especially if they know they have swifts nesting at their house. The first sign that swifts have returned to breed is the sound of their wonderful piercing scream which they make to acknowledge an established colony. Each returning bird circles the nest site before flying into the exact hole it used last year. As more birds arrive and return to their nests, our skies are alive with tumbling, black, scythe-like shapes. Screams of joy fill the air and summer is finally here. I hope I’ve painted a picture that some of you are still experiencing but I’m guessing this is just a distant memory for most of the readers of this magazine. Sadly, swifts have suffered a drastic decline and this is entirely the fault of humans. We’ve blocked up the holes in our roofs, we’ve fitted PVC soffits and boards and installed cavity wall insulation. We’ve hermetically sealed ourselves into our homes without a thought to the homes of other living creatures that share our space. To make things worse, our councils have destroyed entire colonies with their regeneration schemes and very little consideration has been made for swifts when planning new housing initiatives. Mostly this has been done out of ignorance and in some cases by turning a blind eye, but thankfully the situation is reversible. You’ll be pleased to hear that we can fill our skies with swifts once more with a little investment, a lot of patience and by raising our awareness about these fabulous creatures. A couple of years ago I set up Leeds Swifts which is now part of a nationwide network of swift groups. We meet regularly and also link to swift experts and enthusiasts around the world. Together we are aiming to ‘keep our skies alive’ by educating people about swifts and encouraging as many people as possible to provide new homes for these wonderful birds. Here’s how you can help: 1.

Firstly, you need to be able to identify swifts correctly. Swifts appear completely black. They have ridiculously long wings, make a piercing screaming sound and they do not perch. They don’t build visible nests, instead they disappear

14 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

young swift in box

into cracks and crevices. They are often confused with swallows or house martins which build a visible nest out of mud, inside barns or attached to buildings. Swallows and martins show lots of white on the underside of their bodies. House martins also have a white rump. 2.

Swifts can be very secretive around the nest site and often people have no idea that they have swifts nesting at their house. Listen out for swifts screaming near to your house and contact Leeds Swifts if you see any screaming parties or you see swifts looking like they are trying to get under a roof.

3.

Contact Leeds Swifts (on Facebook, Twitter or www.startbirding.co.uk/leeds-swifts/) if you’d like to attract swifts to nest at your house. This involves putting up some swift nest boxes and playing swift ‘love songs’ at the right time of the year to attract newly maturing birds to prospect for next year’s breeding sites. We can provide all the advice and information you need to get you started or check out Swift Conservation www.swift-conservation.org or Action for Swifts http://actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk/

4.

Visit Leeds Swifts at this year’s Leeds Birdfair on Saturday 24th June at Rodley Nature Reserve to learn more about these wonderful birds and how you can help to change the future for swifts.

Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. For details of classes email linda@startbirding.co.uk or call 07778 768719. Visit www.startbirding.co.uk or Start Birding on Facebook and Twitter (for Leeds Swifts visit Facebook/LeedsSwifts or Twitter@LeedsSwifts)

LOCAL BLOGGER FINALIST IN THE UK BLOG AWARDS Muffin, Hope Pastures’ resident mule (half pony, half donkey), writes his Monthly Musings for the local horse and donkey sanctuary to update the charity’s supporters about what’s going on. His quirky insights were voted amongst the Top 8 in the UK in the ‘Lifestyle’ category of the UK Blog Awards 2017. Recognising it would be difficult for a real-life mule to attend the Finalists’ presentation evening in London in April, the Hope Pastures team organised for a knitted Mini-Me to attend in his place and Muffin’s followers were treated to an account of Mini-Muffin’s visit to the Big City. Kim Pengelly, the fundraiser who accompanied him, commented, “Although Muffin’s Monthly Musings didn’t win on the night, it’s a real 16 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

MOOR ALLERTON SPORTS AND SOCIAL CENTRE The MoorAllerton Sports and Social Centre (MASSC) is not easily found. At the Moortown end of Stonegate Road there is what looks like a small service road beside some flats, opposite a Fire Station. Users of the Centre take this narrow road, then bear right along a single track and the huge site opens before you. There is a Bowls Pavilion and Crown Green in front of you, Tennis Courts on the left of you and the Centre building further back on the left hand side. The Building has a large hall, a Bar area, a Snooker room, and a Bridge suite. (See Website picture) This Centre was founded by public subscription in 1919 when an Appeal letter was sent out to local residents to raise money for a War Memorial for those who had made the supreme sacrifice and a Memorial Institute for those who had served their country and returned. The Centre helps pay for the maintenance of the Cross at St.Johns Church. (See picture of Memory Board, and Cross). Membership of this Centre can be as individual Social members with access to the Bar and TV seating area, or as a Section members. There are 4 sections:- Bowls, Bridge, Table Tennis and Snooker. Other regular users include U3A, Keep Fit classes, Tae Kwondo, Dancing, Childrens activities to name but a few. Then there are those who hire the Centre for one-off events such as Meetings, Family Gatherings, Parties,

HICKS

Receptions, etc. (See website for details) Nearly 100 years on and MASSC remains a thriving local Centre offering a variety of sports and other leisure activities and has a current membership of 500 plus. The Council, consisting primarily of representatives from the 4 Sections, plans to celebrate this success and needs local help. With assistance from The Leeds Library a small display of WW1 material was set up in the Centre in March 2017 asking users and visitors if they had any information about ancestors and /or residents who had associations within the Moor Allerton area especially, and Leeds in general, who had taken part in WW1. The Centre does have a member researching the War records for information about the names we already have. CAN YOU HELP US WITH FURTHER INFORMATION? THE OUTLINE PLAN FOR THE CENTENARY CELEBRATION IN 2019 WILL CONSIST OF A SHORT CONCERT OF SOLEMN AND POPULAR MUSIC AND SONGS FROM THE TIME WITH SOME READINGS OF LETTERS FROM THE TRENCHES, POEMS, ETC. THE 3RD MEANWOOD FESTIVAL IS SET TO INSPIRE The Meanwood Festival, now a firm favourite in the area, aims to inspire people with a range of over 50 different activities in 20 locations between 20th and 29th May. Festival Organiser Chris Swales says ‘Once again this year we have something for people of all ages and interests. We’re showcasing what the area has to offer in music, art, literature, drama, heritage, health, food and drink, and finishing it off with our Annual Fun Day which last year was enjoyed by an estimated 4000 people - probably the biggest event Meanwood has ever seen’. Full details of all the events are available on the dedicated Festival website; www.meanwoodfestival.co.uk Music events are always popular at the Festival and this year there is a great range of music concerts including the 50 strong SingMeanwood choir, a ukulele orchestra, country blues, swing and roots with the David Broad Trio, new songs from Schwa and traditional Irish musicians Bernica, in collaboration with the Irish Arts Foundation. The Festival also finishes with a ‘mini’ music festival directly after the Fun Day to extend the day a little. ‘There’s a chance to get creative and learn practical drawing and painting skills’ explained Chris, ‘with Landscape and Life Drawing workshops as well as viewing various exhibitions of artwork and photographs from local artists’. Local author June Taylor will read from her book ‘Losing Juliet’ and Chris will read his poems for kids as well as one of Alan Bennett’s ‘Talking Heads’ scripts. ‘Actor David Robertson will give a talk on his experiences in the

Theatre’ continued Chris, ‘and as a first for the Festival we’re really excited to host a night of stand up comedy with professional comedians and compere – should be a cracking night’. Meanwood has a wealth of outdoor space and history which will be explored through heritage and bird song walks as well as a community walk and sing. For those wanting to try something different to get fit there are taster sessions in Qi Gong, Zumba and kettlebells and for dog lovers there is the ever popular Fun Dog Show, which is always great for dogs and owners alike. Food and drink plays an important part in any Festival and this year is no different. There’s an opportunity to learn about wine and food matching and get a taste of 3 of the area’s finest eateries; Hana Matsuri (Meanwoods first and only sushi bar) the Hungry Bear and Zucco’s with the ‘Meanwood Dinnerbox’. Ridgeside Brewery will once again be brewing a special Festival Ale ‘Beck Ran Red’ and local restaurants and cafes are creating special Festival meals and deals over the period. And if you love cake (and who doesn’t) the Clandestine Cake Club return to bake, eat and talk about their wonderful creations.

to do for the kids. This year we have circus skills, donkey rides, a climbing wall, a new play area, and lots of new games to play as well as the old favourites; face painting, hook a duck and the sweetie stall’. The kids will be able to meet Ronnie the Rhino too. On stage will be three great bands; Bassa Bassa, The David Broad Trio and the Sparrows Steel Pan Band to keep the crowds entertained. The Fun Day is held on the Cricket Pitch on Parkside Road next to the Myrtle Tavern and it will again be opened by the Lord Mayor of Leeds.

Festival kids start young. Babies (and the people looking after them) are invited to join a pram friendly walk through the park finishing in the Meanwood Park Cafe, toddlers can bring their teddies and a picnic to the Teddy Bears Picnic, kids between 5 and 13 can get a taste of Tai Chi and Kung Fu and of course there are all the activities at the Fun Day.

We have been very fortunate to have great backing from local business sponsors the Myrtle Tavern, Moores Estate Agents, Top Stitch, Moustache Barbers, the Bay Horse, Alan Cooke Estate Agents, Ace Cars, the Meanwood Park Cafe, RDF Builders, Alfred, East of Arcadia, Manning Stainton, QLM and Hana Matsuri. Thanks also go to the Community Committee for their support.

Gordon Charlesworth is the Fun Day Organiser this year. ‘The Fun Day on Bank Holiday Monday 29th May between 12 and 4pm is our biggest and best yet’ he states, ‘with over 60 craft and community stalls, food from around the world, performers, displays and lots

The Festival runs from Saturday 20th to Monday 29th May. Many activities are free but some places are limited so you may need to book to avoid disappointment. Full details of all the events a can be found at www.meanwoodfestival.co.uk

MY RELATIVE NEEDS TO MOVE TO A CARE HOME… As a carer for a close relative or parent, there may come a time when you find yourself contemplating where you can get more care and support for your loved one in later life. The common misconception is that the only option available is a traditional ‘care home’. Whilst this may be appropriate for some people Westward Care, a local provider of care and support for older people, have been leading the way in developing wider options that can make the transition to a more supported way of living, less of a dramatic lifestyle change. With an established track record of providing high quality residential and nursing care across three sites in Leeds (Southlands in Roundhay, Headingley Hall and Pennington Court in Beeston) Westward Care have been developing their Independent Apartments offer over the last five years. This innovation is not a retirement home. It is an option where people can continue to own their own home and decide on their own itinerary, with the reassurance of care and support if or when it is needed. People can tailor their own package of support depending on what they need – from laundry service to dining provision or help with personal care. Families that have chosen Westward Care locations for their loved ones highlight that when their relative moved to their apartment, it took a weight off their shoulders. The relationship

with their relative changed from being one of ‘checking up’ to catching up – enjoying their time together rather than dealing with a checklist of actions. Whatever the solution Westward Care believe in empowering people in later life to enjoy a new lease of life. Westward Care are inviting readers to visit any of their locations on 16 June from 2pm - 5pm for their Spring Open Day. Enjoy afternoon tea and variety of activities – all for free. Pop it in your diary. SUBURBAN MAGAZINE | 23

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

May is a wonderful month, with lambs gambolling in the fields, and many shrubs and trees showing leaves and blossom. There are also many spring flowering plants still in bloom, making everyone feel happy and excited. Your dahlia tubers will have sprouted well, so try taking a few cuttings to increase the stock of your favourite plants. Separate the new growth from just outside the tuber, then insert them into a good pot of compost and keep them warm and moist until rooted. You could also try taking cuttings of chrysanthemums, separating new shoots with a small amount of roots from the parent plant and placing them in a new pot.

grow well in florists buckets (available from most super markets) with holes drilled in them at the bottom for drainage.

In the vegetable garden, it is time to continue planting all your brassicas plants, i.e. cauliflowers, cabbage, kale etc. Then additional sowings of peas, beans, swedes, carrots, together with everything else you particularly enjoy – pumpkins, sweet corn 1 any 29/02/2016 and otherDalesway_Advert_29.2.16.pdf exotics. If you do not have space for vegetables, remember they also

In this warmer weather, all the individual garden pests will multiply at an astonishing rate, so spray regularly each month with a propriety insecticide/fungicide or more often with a soft soap solution. Then look out for slugs and snails which love to eat the soft emerging 13:53 foliage of hostas, delphiniums and lupins to name a few, and take appropriate action.

As the weather warms up towards the end of May, start to plant out all your frost tender plants, such as dahlias, geraniums, bedding plants – and everything you started from seed earlier in the year. UNLESS, a further frost is forecast, in which case you may need some horticultural fleece to protect them.

The taste of home grown tomatoes in heavenly, and with so many different varieties available you must try one or two of as many kinds as you have room for. This also applies to the small cucumbers, which are ideal for just one or two meals. Then thinking about plants growing up canes, all your sweet peas will be heading upwards at a good rate, which means regular tying in and dead heading to keep them flowering all summer.

A SIGN OF THE TIMES IN MEANWOOD! Meanwood continued to reinforce its unique identity last month when a carved sandstone block was placed in the heart of Meanwood. The piece of land at the junction of Green Road and Stonegate Road was previously an overgrown and scruffy area before the Meanwood Valley Partnership decided to do something about it. Chris Sheard, the Partnership’s Chairman and driving force behind the project, explains ‘Nestled between Headingley and Moortown, Meanwood tends to get overlooked, but it’s a vibrant place with its own identity, recognised more and more as a great place to live. We want to continue to enhance the area wherever we can and this was an obvious opportunity’. Leeds solicitor and landowner Rodney Lester kindly gave the Partnership permission to improve the area and place a stone showing the central Meanwood Village location. The stone was donated by the Meanwood Valley Partnership, local residents who work in partnership with local businesses, the Council and other groups to preserve, protect and enhance the Meanwood Valley area.
