Get ready for a great big, fun weekend!
Brad Stauffer
On behalf of the Gretna Days Foundation, I want to encourage the entire community to participate in Gretna Days July 26 to July 29. We have worked hard to make this year’s celebration the best ever! Sam’s Amusements Carnival returns this year. The carnival will run Thursday and Friday evenings and all day on Saturday. Due to street construction, it will be in a new location this year, in the empty lot on Angus Street just south of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Special thanks to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church as with all the road construction there were no other locations available. Parking this year will be available in the church lot on Thursday and Friday nights and through 4 p.m. on Saturday. New this year is the Remembering Our Fallen display in Peterson Park, and we are still finalizing some specifics to have helicopter rides this year for Gretna Days. The craft show returns again this year but will take place in Peterson Park. The Gretna
Days Dance and Beer Garden returns on Saturday night, and the Community Picnic that started it all is back on Sunday. The great news is that there are lots more great events, and you can find them all on our website at www.GretnaDays.com. The members of our board work hard all year to make this a very special celebration. At a time when many small-town celebrations are on the decline, we are proud that ours continues to grow. While we have grown, we remain loyal to our roots. We continue to stress community and nonprofits over commercialization. To highlight this, our weekend will wrap up with our community picnic on Sunday. This year we are excited to again provide a free picnic as well as games and rides for the kids during the picnic with the same low-cost price structure. Our fairy tale princesses will be joining us again on Sunday for the picnic, and we hear that Batman will be making a stop again this year as well. I want to thank all the businesses
whose support makes Gretna Days possible. Please check out the list at GretnaDays.com and thank them for their support of the weekend. I also want to say a special thank you to all the other members of the Gretna Days Foundation Board of Directors: Ron VanOeveren-vice president, Kevin Svec-treasurer, Kathy Wendlandt-secretary, Jerry Imig, Mark Hauptman, Michelle Leist, Bill Lewis and Hubble Reichert. Without all these people’s hard work, and lots of volunteer hours, this weekend would not be possible. Please join us at Gretna Days 2018. Come meet your neighbors and enjoy because this weekend is all about the community of Gretna! Brad Stauffer President-Gretna Days Foundation

Celebrating Gretna in big and small ways By Rachel George Suburban Newspapers
SUBURBAN NEWSPAPERS
Members of Gretna American Legion Post 216 lead the Gretna Days Parade.
A community tradition of more than 50 years continues at the end of this month. The annual Gretna Days celebration will be held Thursday through Sunday. Due to major road construction projects this summer, some returning events will move to a new location. “A lot of the changes this year are because of the street closures,” said Brad Stauffer, Gretna Days Foundation president. “We wanted to make sure we had adequate parking and access.” Sam’s Amusements will return to host the carnival Thursday through Saturday in a new location: the lot across the street from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Angus Street. Wristbands will be available for unlimited rides Thursday night, Friday night or Saturday afternoon for $20. Presale information will be shared to the
Gretna Days Foundation Facebook page at a later date. “We expect them to do a great job again this year,” Stauffer said. The craft show also will be held in a new location this year. The event is set to run Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Peterson Park. Coordinators expect many vendors to attend. New this year, the Gretna Days Foundation hopes to offer helicopter rides over the weekend. “We’ve had a lot of interest in that,” Stauffer said. With new events being added, others are being expanded. The Friday night firework show is expected to be bigger and better than in years past. “We’ve actually upped the budget this year and readjusted that show a little bit,” Stauffer said. “We expect it to be better See Gretna Days: Page 4

It will be shot from the same location as past years and can be seen throughout most of the city, as well as at North Park. As always, the fun culminates Sunday with the annual community picnic, hosted by the Gretna Days Foundation and its business sponsors. The event offers free food and cheap games and rides for children. “It’s a great time,” Stauffer said. “It’s kind of a thank you from the businesses
to the people of Gretna for shopping locally. It’s the heart of Gretna Days and where it started. We’ve wanted to keep that event as traditional as possible.” To stay updated, or find events hosted by churches and community nonprofits, visit gretnadays.com. “The Gretna Days Foundation Board is a small group of volunteers who really enjoy doing this for the community and making it a community event,” Stauffer said. “They work really hard to make this special for the citizens of Gretna. Memorial on display all weekend honors fallen soldiers By Rachel George Suburban Newspapers
“This new memorial is designed to have people from all over the country who have given their lives in support, fighting for the war on terror since 9/11.”
A national memorial making only two stops in Nebraska this year will be on display throughout Gretna Days. Remembering Our Fallen — a photographic war memorial that honors U.S. military fallen from the war on terror since 9/11 — will be open from dusk to dawn July 27 to 29. A project fulfilled by Omaha-based nonprofit Patriotic Productions, the memorial encompasses more than 30 tribute towers, each with three double-sided banners and featuring more than 150 people on each tower. A relatively new exhibit, the memorial was unveiled on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in September 2017. “They have had state-specific memorials traveling for quite some time,” said Ron VanOeveren, Gretna Days Foundation vice president. “This new memorial is designed to have people from all over the country who have given their lives in support,

fighting for the war on terror since 9/11.” Gretna Days organizers will team with Gretna American Legion Family — Post 216 to set up the memorial Friday morning on the west side of Peterson Park. The display will then be open through Sunday afternoon. An opening ceremony will be held July 27 at 7 p.m., following the Optimist Club barbecue and Citizen of the Year announcement. “Having seen what this display means to the families of the fallen, and knowing the importance of remembering the people on it, made it a great fit to add to Gretna Days,” VanOeveren said. “We’re honored to have it be a part of Gretna Days, and we want all those men and women to be seen and remembered. “A quote they use a lot with their display is, ‘Man does not die until he is forgotten.’ That’s really what it’s all about: to see their faces, say their names and keep them alive in that manner.”
