Bellevue
An early morning balloon glow is often part of the festivities of the annual Riverfest celebration.
A
s the “Birthplace of Nebraska,” Bellevue offers a wealth of history to be explored in self-guided tours that take you to the state’s first bank and oldest church, an early cemetery and more. Bellevue began as a fur-trading post in 1822 only to see slow growth for the next 120 years. The opening of the Martin Bomber Plant at Offutt Air Force Base brought the city’s first population explosion in the 1940s and 1950s. Then as now, Offutt plays an integral role in Bellevue’s development, first as home to the Strategic Air Command and now the U.S. Strategic Command. The base welcomes thousands of people to its Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show, with the Air Force Thunderbirds or the Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration teams usually the featured attraction. Proud to be on the Lewis and Clark Trail, Bellevue commemorates the expedition with a Lewis and Clark Children’s Interpretive Art Wall on permanent exhibition at Haworth Park. Eight feet tall and 65 feet wide, the wall features expedition-themed artwork by more than 700 elementary school children from Illinois to Washington. The Missouri River explored by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark continues to play an integral role in Bellevue’s growth and development. The city currently is turning American Heroes Park along the riverfront into a first-class, 70-acre regional attraction that will eventually include a fishing lake, trails, a 300-seat amphitheater, a community center, a museum and a restaurant.

Haworth Park is home to the annual RiverFest celebration, a summertime festival of food, music and family fun that has developed into one of the metro area’s major events. Bellevue also is adding two splash pads to its long list of familyfriendly recreation options. The city’s extensive park system includes soccer, football and baseball fields, walking and biking trails, and plenty of facilities for cookouts and picnics. Sports-loving residents also enjoy the state-of-the-art Champions Village softball complex, opened in 2010. For nature lovers, there is Fontenelle Forest Nature Center with more than 1,400 acres of woods and wetlands and 17 miles of walking trails. The Katherine and Fred Buffett Forest Learning Center is a must-see for its architecture and year-round exhibitions and special programs for members and nonmembers alike. Nationally acclaimed Bellevue University continues to expand. Its main campus has gained several major buildings in the last five years, plus a new Bruin Boulevard. Bellevue is home to the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home, a state-of-the-art facility catering to the men and women who have served our country. Nebraska Medicine Bellevue, the city’s first full-service public hospital, opened in 2010. New shopping venues, a combined hotel and conference center, and first-rate recreational opportunities all help make Bellevue a gem of a city in eastern Nebraska. — Eugene Curtin

I
t’s no wonder Gretna is one of the fastest-growing cities in Nebraska. Located midway between Lincoln and Omaha along the I-80 corridor, Gretna balances a small-town atmosphere with a variety of amenities. The city’s historic downtown area along McKenna Avenue boasts red brick streets and is home to City Hall, the Gretna Public Library, several churches and many local businesses. Nearby Peterson Park is one of several city-owned recreation areas. In 2015, the park gained a $100,000 accessible playground as a welcomed amenity to the city pool. The city also recently opened soccer fields at the new Fields at Gretna complex, where more development is planned. Leo Royal Park and North Park offer other recreational opportunities for residents. The Gretna Public Library provides a wide variety of services at its main location and an additional branch especially for children. Growth continues to be a defining factor. In 2016, many commercial and residential developments were under construction, including an addition to the Nebraska Crossing outlet mall. Gretna Public Schools reported record enrollment topping 4,000 students at the start of the 2016-17 school year. The district continues to be top-ranked and maintains a tradition of excellence at its six schools. Two new buildings, a second middle school and a fifth elementary school, will open for the start of the 2017-18 school year. Each summer Gretna Days showcases the best of the community. The three-day festival began more than 50 years ago as a way for local businesses to thank the community for its support. This year’s festival will be July 27-30. Carnival rides once again will join perennial favorites that include a fireworks show, parade, car show and community picnic.

La Vista
Apartments, restaurants, offices, retail stores and a green space are planned for the new La Vista City Centre along 84th Street between Harrison Street and Giles Road.
L
a Vista, Nebraska’s youngest city, has a reputation for progress. In the past decade, new residential and commercial properties have grown by leaps and bounds while the city’s population has soared to more than 17,000. The city gets its name from its early residents who enjoyed the panoramic view of the Big Papio Creek Basin. La Vista is Spanish for “the view.” Alamo Drafthouse, the city’s first and only movie theater, is located in Southport West. It features an eight-screen movie theater, a bar and a restaurant. The bar places a heavy focus on craft beers while the restaurant features a from-scratch menu. The location also has an outdoor patio with room for more than 200 people. Many businesses look to La Vista for its economic growth. The city is home to many familiar names, including Cabela’s, Yahoo!, PayPal, Oriental Trading Company, Black Hills Energy, Embassy Suites and scores of smaller established businesses. Cabela’s, in the Southport area just south of I-80 on Giles Road, spans three football fields with merchandise for campers, hunters, hikers, anglers, birdwatchers and outdoor enthusiasts. After a day of fun in La Vista, spend a night at one of the city’s hotels in the Southport area — Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites and Courtyard by Marriott.

When planning an event in the area, consider the impressive Embassy Suites La Vista Conference Center, which offers 45,000 square feet of meeting space with state-of-the-art audio/visual technology. After checking out a number of local shopping destinations, grab lunch or dinner at a growing number of dining establishments. Or pop into the city library at the Metropolitan Community College Sarpy Center. Recreational opportunities abound, starting with 15 neighborhood parks. Looking ahead, the City of La Vista will see big changes. A $175 million project, City Centre, will have a new City Center Park, shops and housing. Demolition has begun on older buildings and new buildings will begin to rise in the spring. The La Vista Sports Complex is another enhancement for the city. The $125 million facility will have an aquatic center, a dozen outdoor fields for a variety of sports and courts for tennis and squash. It is expected to be finished by fall 2018. — Rachel George

Offutt Air Force Base
A flight simulator provides realistic training for pilots at Offutt Air Force Base.
O
ffutt Air Force Base has long played a major role in Sarpy County history and in American military history overall, beginning with the construction of Fort Crook in the same area that is now home to Offutt. At one time, the Base was home to the Glenn Martin-Nebraska Bomber Plant, where a number of Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers, including the “Enola Gay” and “Bock’s Car,” which dropped atomic bombs on Japan in World War II, were built. Home to a number of units, Offutt is most notably called home by the 55th Wing, as well as U.S. Strategic Command, the 55th Weather Wing and the USAF Heartland of America Band. “The 55th Wing provides dominant intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, electronic attack, command and control, and base operating support capabilities around the world,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Marty Reynolds, 55th Wing commander. It’s a proud mission, one that the community celebrates along with the base. The base is a hub for about 5,400 military members, about 5,000 civilian workers and about 9,000 military family members, a total of about 19,400. Additionally, there are more than 43,000 military retirees within 150 miles of the base. Offutt’s economic impact on the community is estimated at $1.52 billion. “Thank you for everything you do to make us feel at home here Suburban Newspapers Inc.
at Offutt,” Reynolds said in reference to Bellevue’s inclusive spirit. “You may see our Offutt families in the community, taking part in events or volunteering as a way to say thank you for the way you have embraced us.” — Rachel George

The Mo-Pac Trial runs through Springfield. This growing community is also gaining a new subdivision, Springfield Pines.
T
he green rolling hills, springs, and peaceful valleys that attracted Capt. J.D. Spearman to Springfield in 1871 continue to draw others to the area. But today, there is much more. The scenic MoPac bike trail and parallel equestrian trail, an international award-winning winery, an artistically landscaped sculpture garden and the popular Sarpy County Fair, show that there’s a lot more to Springfield than a pastoral setting and peaceful valleys. Main Street in Springfield continues to add new businesses bringing additional interest to the area, and now includes a bar, several boutiques, and a Thai eatery. Main Street is also the home of Springfield Drug, one of the area’s last old-fashioned soda fountains. One of the most popular events in Springfield is the annual Sarpy County Fair, which draws thousands of visitors from across the Midwest to events that range from show animals to tractor pulls every summer. In addition to the county fair, Springfield also hosts its annual Springfield Days celebration in June. Soaring Wings Winery and Vineyard opened a few years ago just 14

Soaring Wings hosts numerous special events — including concerts — that bring folks from across the metro area to Springfield. The winery features a party room complete with a multimedia center, ideal for business meetings and end-of-the year parties. Springfield offers plenty of opportunities for its children with the splash pad at Buffalo Park, one of summertime’s top attractions. Children in the area attend one of the four Springfield Platteview Community Schools: Springfield or Westmont Elementary Schools, Platteview Central Junior High and Platteview High School. There’s also plenty of opportunity for growth in Springfield, especially with the addition of Springfield Pines, a new housing development that will add 270 homes and a retail center to the area in the coming years. — Michael Batchelder

Plattsmouth
The Plattsmouth Harvest Festival celebrates the city’s heritage. Held in early September, the event includes a parade, flea market and car show.
L
ocated at the confluence of the Platte and Missouri Rivers, Plattsmouth began as an important trading station in 1854. In recent years, those same natural attributes have made it a popular recreation destination, with many lakes and scenic areas, such as Schilling Wildlife Refuge, attracting nature enthusiasts and boaters alike. Plattsmouth, the county seat of Cass County, has a population of about 7,000 residents. Many festivals and events take place during the year, including the longstanding Plattsmouth Harvest Festival in September that features four days of carnival events, parades, food and a coronation of the Harvest Festival King and Queen. In October, classic car fanatics come to town to check out Cruizin’ Main, which annually features more than 500 vintage cars displayed on Main Street. The history of Plattsmouth can be felt in its downtown area, where many stately homes are listed on the National Historic Register. People can further explore the area’s past by visiting the Cass County Historical Society Museum, which traces the county from the pioneer days to the present. The city is served by the Plattsmouth Community School District, which boasts of a public high school, middle school and Suburban Newspapers Inc.
elementary school, as well as an early childhood center. Additionally, there are two private schools in the city – the K-12 First Baptist School and the K-8 St. John the Baptist Catholic grade school. Since 2001, when Plattsmouth received the coveted Main Street Community designation, its mission has been to revitalize the downtown business district by strengthening the economic base, promoting its unique historic resources and bolstering local pride by encouraging citizen involvement. The city boasts a senior and community center that includes a pool, gym, weight-lifting equipment, fitness room and an indoor track. Some activities and classes offered at the center include preschool PE, self-defense classes, basketball, sand volleyball league, healthy cooking classes, ballroom dancing, movie nights and swim lessons. On hot summer days, Twin Rivers Water Park is an excellent place for area residents to cool off and slide down waterslides. Besides historic homes, Plattsmouth has a wide range of housing options, including building sites in the city and in nearby lake communities, such as Beaver Lake, Buccaneer Bay and Copper Dollar Cove. — Ron Petak
