Join in the fun this weekend
Brad Stauffer, President of the Gretna Days Foundation
On behalf of the Gretna Days Foundation I would like to invite everyone to join in the fun at Gretna Days 2014. The fun kicks off on Friday and runs through Sunday. You can find all the fun events online at www.gretnadays.com under the calendar tab. Once again this year the Gretna Days Foundation will be hosting the Gretna Days Dance and Beer Garden in Village Square on Saturday night. This fun, 21-and-over-only event showcases the band RoughCut. Money raised at the dance helps fund the Gretna Days weekend. On Sunday we will once again be cosponsoring the Community Picnic with the Gretna Chamber of Commerce. The event is lots of fun with free food and 50cent rides for the kids. This year we have back a past favorite, the pony rides, and we added something new with military and first responder
vehicles for the kids to enjoy. The fun doesn’t stop there, though. There are lots of fun events sponsored by other groups listed on the calendar, so go check out the entire list. A great big thank you for shopping locally in Gretna and supporting local businesses that are Gretna Days sponsors. You’ll find the sponsors listed on the website. If you enjoy Gretna Days, please thank them for their sponsorship. So it doesn’t matter what your age or interest, there should be something for you. Check out the listing and come out and enjoy with your friends from Gretna and surrounding communities. We hope to see you there. Brad Stauffer President — Gretna Days Foundation

f the calendar has turned to July, rest assured Gretna Days can’t be far behind. It’s been that way for more than 50 years, and the 54th annual event that runs July 18 to 20 is sure to live up to those past celebrations. Organized by the Gretna Days Foundation, the three-day affair features everything from a Friday evening barbecue to a Sunday classic car show. In between, there’s food (and more food), fireworks and fun for the entire family. Brad Stauffer, chairman of the Gretna Days Committee, said all systems are a go for this year’s event to be a big success. “Things are coming together real well,” Stauffer said. “We’ve tried hard to make this about the community.” With almost year-round planning, the Gretna Days Foundation oversees the event, but Stauffer said the key to Gretna Days success rests with event sponsors and volunteers. “With only nine people on the committee, we have to rely a lot on
s u b u rba n n e wspap e rs i n c .
other groups,” he said. “The majority of our events are sponsored by community groups. Gretna Days gets people involved.” A good example of that community support, Stauffer said, is Gretna Baptist Church stepping up this year to sponsor Friday’s Family Fun Night at North Park. “That’s a change for us, and we always welcome anyone to be involved,” Stauffer said. Just as important, Stauffer said,

Parade among highlights of weekend celebration Ron Petak suburban newspapers inc
If everybody loves a parade, then everybody must really love the Gretna Days Parade. A highlight of the city’s annual civic celebration, the parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on McKenna Avenue before heading east on Angus Street to its conclusion near Petersen Park. More than 60 entries are expected to participate in the Gretna Days tradition that should last until about 12:30 p.m. The theme of this year’s parade is “Remembering Our Heroes,” a theme first-year parade coordinator Clay Heavican said will mean a lot of things to a lot of people. “For me, it’s remembering everyone from our fire department to the police and military — people who help protect our freedom, protect our community — and for other people it might be remembering a coach or a teacher,” Heavican said. The theme also should bring added cheers from parade-watchers as the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department
“Remembering Our Heroes” is the theme of the event. and several color guards lead off the parade. The 2014 Citizen of the Year, which won’t be announced until the night before, will serve as the grand marshal. Among the other groups scheduled to march are the Gretna High School band, cheerleaders and dance teams, as well as numerous youth groups, nonprofits and local businesses. A three-judge panel of State Sen. John Murante, Lori Blum and Terry Dolnicek will hand out awards in the following categories: Commercial float (business, industry) and non-commercial floats (organizations and clubs). Heavican said there is still time to register for the parade by going to the Gretna Chamber of Commerce website. The parade is sponsored by the Gretna Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Committee.

Dodgeball tournament grows in popularity Ron Petak suburban newspapers inc.
Now in its fourth year, the middle school dodgeball tournament is hitting its stride. Sponsored by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and held at the church’s MAC Activity Center, the Friday night event has proved popular with the middle school students.
“Last year we had eight teams and this year we expect the same or a few more,” said Marty Antholz, the tournament coordinator. Good Shepherd, 11204 S. 204th St., has sponsored the event since its inception, which Antholz said has made for smoother sailing each year. “We’ve gotten more refined with

how we do,” he said. Antholz said it’s not by coincidence the event is focused on the middle school-aged children. “The high-school kids can drive and they have all kinds of activities,” he said. “The middle-school kids aren’t little kids any more, so it’s a great opportunity to have a little fun, and we’re happy to provide that opportunity.” The event, open to kids entering grades five through eight, begins at 4 p.m. and continues until the end of the round robin/ double-elimination tournament. The event follows National Amateur Dodgeball Association rules, which are available through the church website, gslcgretna.org (click on the Gretna Days Dodge Ball Tournament link). There is a minimum of six players and maximum of 10 players per team, and each player must wear a shirt/jersey with a number on it during play. There is a $40 registration fee per team, and registrations are due at the above website by July 17. With the tournament still more than a week away, Antholz said there’s still time for area kids to put together a team and spend a Friday evening at Good Shepherd. “Get some friends together and fill out a registration,” Antholz said.

Social event will feature ice cream, quilt auction Ron Petak suburban newspapers inc.
The 1920s song says it all . . . “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. So it will be July 20 as Gretna United Methodist Church hosts its annual Ice Cream Social and Quilt Auction as part of the annual Gretna Days celebration. On the menu from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. is ice cream made by church members, along with plenty of toppings, and pies and desserts to boot. As part of the event, a quilt auction will be held at 3 p.m. The social and auction is one of the last events of the Gretna Days weekend, and event coordinator Shirley Boyer said it’s a good time for folks to relax in the air conditioning after a weekend of activities. Boyer said there will be plenty of the old standby ice cream flavors such as chocolate and vanilla, but expect a bit
of creativity from some of the ice cream makers. The highlight of the day is the annual oral auction for a quilt created by church member Shirley Peterson, who has made the auction quilt for more than a decade. There is no admission to the event, but there is a suggested minimal donation for the ice cream and desserts. Proceeds support the church’s high school youth group and its mission projects — among them a recent weeklong trip to Colorado to assist flood victims as well as monthly service projects in the metro area. For more information about the ice cream social and quilt auction, visit the Gretna Chamber of Commerce website at gretnachamber.org and click on the events link.

is getting folks living in and around Gretna to celebrate their community together. “We try hard to make this about the community, and it’s a great opportunity to spend time with your neighbors,” he said. Gretna Days opens on Friday, which is highlighted by the annual fireworks display sponsored by Gretna-based Peters Pyrotechnic Productions. The show can be seen from many venues in Gretna, but expect a good sized crowd at North Park as Family Fun Night and the Optimist Club-sponsored hamburger and hot dog barbecue wraps up. Friday evening also pays tribute to Gretna’s agricultural heritage with the antique tractor pull sponsored by Gretna Gas & Lube and Mr. Tire. The event feature stock, classic, open and super open classes and is held behind Village Square at Apache and Guenther roads. Saturday morning brings runners to their mark with the Resurrection Run/Breakfast. Sponsored by Resurrection Lutheran Church, there are 3- and 5-mile runs, plus a 1-mile walk for kids. For many, the highlight events of the day are the Gretna Optimist Club
costumed Kiddie Parade and Gretna chamber-sponsored Gretna Days Parade. The Kiddie Parade is held in front of Resurrection Lutheran Church (153 S. McKenna Ave.), while the main parade works its way north on McKenna Avenue before heading east on Angus Street. Also featured on Saturday is the hot dog feed sponsored by Silver Ridge Assisted Living, Gretna Volunteer Fire Department’s water fights at Petersen Park, an evening high school pool party at City Pool and a pair of adult dances and adult beverages — one at Village Square (music by Rough Cut) and the other on McKenna Avenue (music by Rock Slide). Gretna Days closes on Sunday with the daylong Road Burners Car Show on McKenna Avenue, a free picnic (including rides and games) at Petersen Park sponsored by Gretna Days Foundation and the Gretna Chamber of Commerce, an ice cream social and quilt auction at Gretna United Methodist Church, and the popular Knights of Columbus tube races for all ages at City Pool.
