On behalf of the Gretna Days Foundation Board I want to encourage the entire community to participate in Gretna Days 2016 July 28th to July 31st. We have worked hard to make this year’s celebration the best ever! New this year is the addition of Sam’s Amusements. The Carnival will run Thursday and Friday evenings and all day on Saturday on Angus Street east of Highway 6 near F&M Bank. This year we also added a Teen Dance on Friday night and a craft show on Saturday, both located in North Park. While those are our new events, there is more fun to be had. We encourage you to visit www.GretnaDays.com to find all the fun events going on throughout the weekend. The members of our Board work hard all year to make this a very special celebration. At a time when many small town celebrations are on the decline we are proud that ours continues to grow. While we have grown, we remained loyal to our roots. We continue to stress community and nonprofits over commercialization. To this end our weekend will wrap up with our community picnic on Sunday. This year we are excited to announce that there will be all new rides and inflatables in Peterson park

Gretna Days celebration keeps getting better “We’re excited it’s growing and continues to be a great community event.” Brad Stauffer
By Susan Skinner
Gretna Breeze Editor For more than 50 years, Gretna Days has celebrated the spirit of the community. Through those years, the festival has grown along with the community, and this year is no exception. Organized by the Gretna Days Foundation, this year’s festival kicks off July 28 and wraps up July 31. From start to finish, traditional events mix with new ones in the schedule of events and activities. “It started as a thank you to the community for shopping locally and supporting local businesses, and it still is today,” said Brad Stauffer, president of the Gretna Days Foundation. “We’re excited it’s growing and continues to be a great community event.” Headlining the changes to this year’s lineup is the addition of a carnival. Rides, games and food will be provided by Sam’s Amusements, the company that operates at the Sarpy County Fair. The carnival will be open Thursday through Saturday at North Park on Angus Street east of Highway 31/6. “It was really the next step to grow Gretna Days,” Stauffer said. Other new events include a craft fair on Saturday. Organizers expect several dozen craftspeople and homebased businesses to participate in the event, which will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in North Park. See Celebrate: Page 5

“We’ve gotten a good response to this event,” Stauffer said. These newcomers will blend with old favorites, such as Friday’s fireworks and Sunday’s community picnic, to provide plenty of opportunities for area residents to join in the celebration. “This is all about the community. We just really want people to come out and spend time and get to know one another,” Stauffer said. What makes Gretna Days a success year after year is the community support from business sponsors and volunteers, Stauffer said. Numerous community groups step up to sponsor and organize events during the celebration, and the Gretna Days Foundation— a stand-alone corporation run by a small board of volunteers — relies on this support. “We have so many businesses that support us,” Stauffer said. “We’re excited it’s growing. It’s really about all of these other groups.” Gretna Days gets into full swing on Friday with several sporting events, including the Gretna Days Golf Tournament and a dodgeball tournament for middle-schoolers at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Also on Friday, the Gretna Optimist Club will host its annual barbecue in North Park, where the carnival also will continue and a teen dance will take place from 9 to 11 p.m. To close out the Friday festivities, See Celebrate: Page 6

Continued from Page 5 Gretna’s own Peters Pyrotechnic Productions will launch a fireworks show about 9:45 p.m. at North Park, although there’s not a bad seat in town. Saturday morning starts bright and early at 7 a.m. with the Resurrection Run. Sponsored by Resurrection Lutheran Church, there’s a pancake breakfast at the church afterward. The day’s traditional favorites include the Gretna Optimist costumed Kiddie Parade and the Gretna Days Parade sponsored by the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce. The Kiddie Parade starts in front of Resurrection Lutheran Church, 153 S. McKenna Ave., while the main parade travels north on McKenna Avenue beginning near the main Gretna Library before heading east on Angus Street to end at the City Pool. For hungry parade goers, the Gretna High School dance team will offer concessions in Peterson Park during the parade. SilverRidge Assisted Living will serve its annual free hot dog feed following the parade at the assisted living center, 20332 Hackberry Drive, next to the high school. Saturday’s lineup also includes a slowpitch softball tournament, garden tractor pull and kiddie pedal tractor pull. “We continue to try and grow things, but we still want to stay with the traditional events,” Stauffer said. Those attending Gretna Days can cool off Saturday afternoon during the Gretna Fire Department’s waterfights on
Angus Street at Peterson Park, and teens can enjoy a pool party at the Gretna City Pool starting at 7 p.m. On Saturday night, Gretna Days won’t end when the sun sets. The Gretna Days Foundation will host a dance and beer garden in Village Square for those 21 or older. This year, Omaha band Hi-Fi Hangover will perform beginning at 8:15 p.m. Proceeds from this social event help make Gretna Days possible. For the younger set, the carnival will continue through the evening. Gretna Days wraps up on Sunday but not before a full day of activities with the Road Burners Car Show downtown on McKenna Avenue, an ice cream social and pie auction at Gretna United Methodist Church and the popular Knights of Columbus tube races for all ages in the Gretna City Pool. The traditional free community picnic in Peterson Park also takes place beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday. In addition to a free lunch, there will be inexpensive rides, games and live music for all to enjoy. “This is really one of the events that defines Gretna Days,” Stauffer said. “We want to keep it as a traditional community picnic, but we’ve added some new fun stuff.” To find out more about this year’s Gretna Day events, check out the organization’s website, gretnadays.org.

Start the morning with a parade Rock and Roll is this year’s theme
By Susan Skinner
Gretna Breeze Editor This year’s Gretna Days Parade promises to be a rockin’ good time. When the longtime event starts on Saturday, rock ‘n’ roll will take center stage on the streets of downtown Gretna. A highlight of the annual community celebration, the parade will start at 10:30 a.m. from in front of the main branch of the Gretna Public Library on South Street and travel north up McKenna Avenue before heading east on Angus Street to end near the City Pool in Peterson Park. Parade organizers expect about 100 entries, including the Shriners, Gretna High School Band and Gretna Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. The Gretna American Legion will lead the parade. “The chamber organizes the parade, and the way we feel is this is an opportunity to give back to the community,” said Clay Heavican, a Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce member and parade organizer. “We want to provide an entertaining time for everyone.” Parade organizers hope this year’s entries have some fun with the chosen “rock and roll” theme. “We try to keep a broad theme so everyone can participate,” Heavican said. “We didn’t pick a decade or anything, and we hope everyone will interpret the theme creatively.” See Parade: Page 9

Parade: Continued from Page 8 As a further incentive for parade entries, the chamber, which sponsors the event each year, has restructured the prizes awarded to participants. “Based on feedback we received, we wanted to encourage participants to be creative and more interactive,” Heavican said. “This year we have some cash prizes and different categories.” This year’s judging categories for parade entries will be floats and walkers, which will include dance groups and bands. For floats, first prize is $250, second $150 and third $50. For walkers, first place winners will receive $100, second $75 and third $50. The awards will be announced and trophies handed out during Sunday’s community picnic in Peterson Park. The 2016 Citizen of the Year will serve as grand marshal of the parade. This year’s honoree will be announced the evening before the parade during a presentation in Peterson Park.

Carnival kicks off the festival By Susan Skinner Gretna Breeze Editor Carnival rides will make their debut at this year’s Gretna Days festival. “There will be rides for everyone. There will be stuff for smaller kids and some for older kids as well,” said Brad Stauffer, Gretna Days Foundation president. “There will be a little bit of everything.” The Gretna Days carnival will run for three days and will be located at North Park on Angus Street, just east of Highway 31/6. The carnival will open at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday nights and at noon on Saturday. Thursday and Friday will both be wristband days; tickets will be needed for Saturday. The addition of a carnival is one that has been long requested from the commu-
nity. “Overwhelmingly, this is one of the biggest things people wanted to see,” Stauffer said. “We’ve looked at this for several years.” In order to make it happen, the foundation moved Gretna Days two weeks later in July to accommodate the carnival operator’s schedule. Sam’s Amusements, the company that operates at the Sarpy County Fair, will provide the carnival rides and games in Gretna. The company will bring only a portion of the show this year, according to Stauffer. “We hope to grow it into more in the future, but it will be based on how the community reacts to it,” Stauffer said.

Gretna Breeze Editor The setting sun doesn’t mean the Gretna Days fun must come to an end. On Saturday night, the Gretna Days Foundation will sponsor a dance and beer garden for those 21 and older. The Gretna Days Dance and Beer Garden kicks off at 7 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m. in Village Square, located at the southwest corner of Highway 370 and Highway 31/6. There’s no cover charge to attend the event, which has been held for the past five years during the annual community festival. “We will have plenty of seating,” said Brad Stauffer, president of the Gretna Days Foundation. “We want people to come out and enjoy themselves. There’s no cover charge, and we have reasonable pricing.” This year local Omaha band Hi-Fi Hangover will perform beginning at 8:15 p.m. and continue until 12:45 a.m. Those attending must be 21 or over and no outside food or drink is allowed. Funds raised at the event help make Gretna Days possible, Stauffer said. “Along with our many donors, it’s one of the ways the foundation is able to put on Gretna Days,” Stauffer said. Local cover band RoughCut played last year’s dance. This year Hi-Fi Hangover will belt out the tunes.
