WELCOME Dear Gretna Community, Welcome to 2017! As we ring in a new year, the Chamber Board is excited to watch our community grow. We know that it’s only with the support of Gretna patrons that local businesses continue to thrive and prosper. Thank you to everyone who shops small and local throughout the year. I would like to personally welcome Kevin Burns (F&M Bank), Theresa Gulizia (Edward Jones, Lori Blum’s office), Kyle Johnson (Oasis Senior Advisors) and Renee Reding (State Farm Insurance) to the 2017 Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Their experience and insight will enhance our Board and our community for years to come. I would also like to thank our outgoing board members, Mike Kelly (Gretna Insurance Agency/Kingdom Insurance Group), Angie Lauritsen (Delectables), Carrol Murray (KOA Campground) and Brad Stauffer (Gretna Chiropractic) for all their hard work and dedication over the last several years. Much of what the Chamber does every day has resulted from their ideas and skills, and would not be possible without their many hours of volunteer time. New in 2016 was a partnership with the Gretna Public Libraries to bring www.GretnaEvents.com to life. We realized that one of the hardest things to find in

Gretna is what’s happening in town. There was no central calendar to see events from multiple organizations at a glance. In an effort to solve this for Gretna residents, and to simplify event publicity for our members, we are proud to present this new resource. This website is a place for our community to post anything that is happening in town, and to have the Chamber and Libraries help spread the word. If you haven’t checked it out yet, please take a minute to see what it’s all about. You can even sync your calendar to it so you will always know what is coming up! As you can see from the cover of this year’s directory, the biggest addition to our programming in 2017 is the new “Local” campaign. I

hope the slogan, #GretnaLife, resonates with you and excites you about our community and all we have to offer. At the Chamber, we know you have many choices in where you Shop, Eat, Play, and Give. We hope you will use this hashtag to remind yourself and those around you of everything available right here in Gretna. Whether you are a business posting a sale or event, an individual taking pictures with friends at a city park, or a community representative advocating for our residents, we hope you truly enjoy life in Gretna. The Good Life. The Great Life. #GretnaLife Sincerely, Clayton P. Heavican 2017 Chamber Board President

CHAMBER HISTORY

Chamber grew from a need to promote local businesses

In the “old days,” Gretna business owners would convene at certain locations around town to discuss everything from taxes to business. In 1984 some local business owners, including Dan Washburn, Mike Wohlers, Joe Piccolo, Jack Koke, Don and Ed Frederick and Web Warren, decided a new direction was needed. They were looking for a way to increase their market share from the local population and resolved to come up with ways to convince the local population that they could provide the same goods and services at the same price that they could find in the “big city” but with much less hassle and smaller crowds. At that time, Dan Washburn was a member of the Ashland Chamber of Commerce and was aware of its annual directory of member names and phone numbers so the public would have easy access to the information. He presented this idea to the group and it was decided to approach other local businesses with the idea. By 2015 joining the group Membe rship Directo ry for $25 per year, and Buyer ’s local businesses Guide y

could get their name and phone number in a simple directory that was distributed to residents in the 68028 zip code. The group chose the name Gretna Area Business Association to avoid fees with the state and national Chambers of Commerce. In the early years they tried many promotions to attract customers. Everything from giving away turkeys as a holiday promotion to using homemade Gretna Bucks encouraged patrons to shop locally. In the early 1990s when the Chamber had grown to more than 100 members, Chamber President Emil Beyer led a plan to change the name to the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce. The name change was voted on, made official, and the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce was established. Today, the Chamber has more than 250 members. The Chamber still publishes a printed directory and now maintains a website with direct contact information for owners of local businesses. The Chamber is active in community affairs and in recruiting new businesses to the city, as well as promoting existing members. This is augmented by local advertising and ribbon cuttings to promote businesses new and old. Yet this is by no means the final chapter. As Gretna continues to grow and more businesses invest in the Gretna area, the chamber will continue to adapt and change to the needs of one of Nebraska’s most vital and growing communities.

GRETNA HISTORY

Built in 1888, Gretna’s Public School initially served all grades. This photo was taken in 1973, after St. Patrick’s Catholic Church purchased the building at auction for $55,800. The building last held students in 1971.

Downtown Gretna looks much the same today as this 1963 photo. Today, City of Gretna and the Gretna Downtown Association are working on a plan to revitalize the downtown business district.

Gretna got its start as Forest City, a settlement near the confluence of the Elkhorn and Platte Rivers. Irish immigrants built dugouts and log cabins near the settlement, which was incorporated in 1858. But the Burlington Railroad had other plans for its route to Ashland. The rail line was built a short distance, less than three miles, from Forest City. Gradually residents began relocating nearer the

railroad right-of-way to create a new town. The new city’s name of Gretna came from Gretna Green in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, home to some of the Scottish settlers of the town. The Lincoln Land Company purchased a deed in April 1886 and by August a plat survey was completed and recorded. Forest City dwindled; the only remaining trace of the community is the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery at 231st Street and Schram Road.

Forward-thinking

The City of Gretna continues to look toward the future. In 2016, the city was awarded grants for two different planning projects. The first study is assessing the need for a new library and/or community center. The second project will focus on a plan to redevelop the historic downtown area. Earlier in 2016, the city was designated as a Leadership Certified Community by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. The designation reflects the city’s commitment to economic development and makes Gretna more competitive in certain state grant applications.

ABOUT GRETNA Booming

The Gretna area is seeing a boom in new housing. Much like the greater metro, new neighborhoods are filing up fast. With several new subdivisions such as Aspen Creek, Cheyenne Country Estates, Highlands Ridge and Remington Ridge, home buyers thinking of Gretna should be able to find or build a home in nearly any price range. Existing home sales are strong, too. Gretna has an estimated median home price of $175,000. Even new apartments are coming to Gretna. All of the apartments in the first two buildings at Avenue 204 at Royal View, at left, have been leased, a third building will soon be completed and a fourth is in the works. To meet growing enrollment that is going along with the new homes, new schools are being constructed in the Gretna Public School district. Aspen Creek is an example, below.

Cutting edge

The City of Gretna purchased a Nissan Leaf electric car in 2016. City staff use the car for travel to meetings in the metro area and other errands. Charging stations, installed in 2016, are at the outlet mall and City Hall and are available to the public. Both are part of the Chargepoint Network. Electric vehicle owners may download the app and get a Chargepoint card that works as a key to access the chargers and also as a renewable charge card for stations that do charge fees. The electric vehicle and two vehicle charging stations are part of a larger Nebraska Community Energy Alliance grant project.

SCHOOLS Gretna Public Schools School District No. 37 was created as a small district to serve the village of Gretna in 1888. The first school was located across the road from the LaBorde Cemetery outside Gretna. A two-story brick schoolhouse was constructed in 1898 south of Angus Street across from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Its size was doubled in 1908, and a gymnasium was added in 1936. As the village grew, so too did the school district. Through minor consolidation over the years and a major consolidation in 1958, the district has grown to its present size of 70 square miles. — Gretna Public Schools Administrative Offices 11717 S. 216th St. Phone: 402-332-3265

A growing community reflected in school district’s student body When the 2018-19 school year begins, enrollment at all five Gretna Public Schools elementaries is projected to be over capacity. The district’s current year enrollment growth rate shot up to 9.6 percent, with an increase of 385 students for the 2016-17 school year. With the five-year average growth rate now projected at 8.5 percent, Gretna Public Schools will continue to face challenges to accommodate the increasing number of students. “This year we’re at 9.6 percent. We used to average 6½ to 7 percent, ” Superintendent Kevin Riley said. The district’s fifth elementary school and a second middle school are under construction and expected to open at the start of the

2017-18 school year. With a total projected enrollment of 5,302 for the 2018-19 school year, the district would be at 93 percent of its building capacity. All elementary schools, including the unopened Aspen Creek Elementary, would be at more than 100 percent of building capacity one year after the new school is expected to open. With the opening of the second middle school, enrollment at each middle school is expected to be at 69 percent and 78 percent of capacity. The high school is expected to have an enrollment of 1,345 for the 2018-19 school year and would be at 91 percent of capacity, a district report showed. These numbers were part of an

SCHOOLS updated district facility master plan presented to the Gretna Board of Education in the fall of 2016. DLR Group looked at historic and current enrollment trends as well as planned housing developments within the district to compile the report for the district. The continued growth will make identifying future elementary sites a top priority for the Gretna School Board, the report said, as well as planning for the second high school. Projections in the report call for a sixth elementary school to open in 2020, and a seventh elementary school in 2023. A second high school also is expected to be needed for the 2023 school year, the report said. For the 2016-17 school year, the district has 4,498 students enrolled and a capacity of 4,265 students, putting the district over capacity at 105 percent. However, these numbers do not include the capacity of portable classrooms currently in use throughout the district.

Thomas Elementary School teacher Amy Timmerman visits with her third-grade students.

More than 2,000 current residential lots remain to be built on within the school district’s boundaries, according to the report, which translates to an additional 1,315 potential students. These numbers do not include apartments planned at Royal View and several other developments. The district’s fifth elementary school and a second middle school were green-lighted as part of a $57.4

million bond issue approved in May 2015. The two new schools are being built in the Aspen Creek development, near Highway 370 and 180th Street, and eventually will be part of a larger school district campus that will include a future second high school.
