A
strong sense of community pride drove the Millard Business Association to restore “MILLARD” to the iconic Millard water tower. The first water tower for the Millard community bore the message “MILLARD WELCOMES YOU.” Millard’s third and current water tower was put into operation in May 1962 and holds 500,000 gallons. Omaha annexed Millard in 1971, and MILLARD was painted over sometime in the 1980s. In 2006 MBA members were able to get MILLARD repainted on the water tower. Today, the restored water tower is a source of pride for the MBA and the community.

15 years of making an impact in Millard The Millard Business Association was formed in May 2003 by a small group of business owners who recognized the need for networking and community development in the Millard area for local area businesses.
It was a feeling of community that the MBA Steering Committee tapped into when they organized the group. The 13 members of the committee had their hands full determining how to draft bylaws and attain nonprofit status.
Some 47 years following the annexation of Millard by Omaha, people continue to identify Millard as a unique community set within the greater Omaha metropolitan area. Just as Florence, Dundee and Benson retain some element of identity from their history as independent townships, so does Millard maintain a smalltown feel in many ways.
“From the get-go, exciting times have consumed all the original members of the steering committee to create and implement a Millard-area business group that we now call the Millard Business Association,” said Steering Committee President Mel Oliva, an insurance agent with Bankers Life and Casualty.
“We were afraid all these businesses in Old Millard would be forgotten. Now we give out $6,000 in scholarships to Millard Public and Skutt High Schools,” said Steve Andersen of Steve Andersen Electrical Contractors. Andersen co-founded the MBA with Ron Fechner, formerly of the Good Samaritan Society-Millard.
In the summer of 2003, the MBA held its first business social at Boulder Creek. An initial membership goal was 50 members by the first business social. More than 100 people attended, excited at the idea of networking with other Millard-area business professionals. By the end of the night, the MBA was nearing 100 members. Other

socials were held at the Q-Joint BBQ, Mail Solutions and Papillion Sanitation. In September 2003, the MBA held its first annual meeting. Members elected an executive board that took office in November of that year. David Fournier, an attorney with Fournier & Dales LLP, was elected president. The vice president was Rich Howdle, owner of Mail Solutions. Treasurer was Corky Blum, branch manager with Security National Bank. Mel Hanna, manager of Millard Dairy Queen, was elected secretary. Two positions typically filled by succession were announced. Mel Oliva was elected to be Fournier’s successor as president-elect, and Steve Andersen was appointed by the board to the past president position. In the years since that first social, membership has grown to more than 300 businesses, representing virtually every type of company. The growth the MBA has experienced gives the organization opportunities to satisfy its core objectives: • Promote, preserve and enhance Millard-area commerce. • Develop active business-to-business networking among members. • Provide business-specific educational opportunities to members. • Provide benevolent community programs. “We’ve come a long way in commitment. We have an identity now. It took growth to do that. I had no clue how long it would last. We have a voice in the community,” Andersen said. “We’ve become a very organized group of local business owners that have networking in mind, but we have a strong commitment to the community and a desire to give back to the community.” The MBA has always been and remains maintained by a full board of volunteers who all have in common a passion to make Millard the best it can be.

A few facts about the MBA
• The MBA’s first Social was held in summer 2003 at Boulder Creek. 100 new Charter Members were in attendance. • Featured local Millard businesses by hosting the Millard Business Expos from 2004 to 2009 and invited the public to attend. • Currently has 7 referral groups. These groups are the backbone of the MBA. Whenever something is needed to be done, the MBA can always count on referral group members to handle the task. • Plays host to annual BBQ fundraisers that feature competitions, great music, entertainment and fireworks displays. • Social events — three per month — include Bagels & Business, Lunch & Learn, Business After Hours. • Promotes new businesses with Grand Opening Ribbon Cuttings. • The Millard Business Community Foundation, the MBA’s fundraising arm, has provided $65,000 in scholarships to date and has helped more than 10,000 people through Project Wee Care. • The MBA was inducted into the Millard Public Schools Hall of Fame in 2008. • Holds an annual Scholarship Golf Scramble that raises money for college scholarships that are granted to graduating seniors at Millard high schools and Skutt Catholic. • Hosts Meet-the-Candidate Forums for members of the great Omaha community for a chance to meet with and hear from candidates and public officials. MBA Opportunities With more than 300 active MBA members and more joining every year, there are many networking and educational opportunities available. • The MBA hosts monthly luncheons with featured speakers. Past speakers have included former Gov. Dave Heineman, Sen. Ben Nelson, former Rep. Lee Terry, former Mayor Jim Suttle, Sen. Deb Fischer, Mayor Jean Stothert and Tom Osborne, the former Nebraska football coach, athletic director and congressman. • As an organization, it strives to continually improve and connect the business community and members to each other while sharing knowledge and expertise that will benefit the entire community.
• Monthly networking events include: Bagels and Business, meeting at a Millard business for coffee and breakfast and networking with other businesses; Lunch & Learn, meeting at a Millard-area restaurant with other MBA members over the lunch hour; and Business After Hours, relaxing at the end of the day with other members of the MBA to make new connections. • The MBA also offers other events and fundraisers throughout the year to help support those who work and live in the Millard community.

From the President CELEBRATING 15 YEARS! On behalf of the Millard Business Association members and businesses, I’m pleased to present our 2018 directory. Inside these pages, you’ll find more than 300 businesses and leaders who are dedicated to making Millard and Omaha a thriving community to live, work and do business. I’m proud to be associated with this organization and honored to serve as the president for our 15th year. The Millard Business Association is built upon our members’ volunteer efforts, dedication to strengthening relationships and commitment to making a difference in our community. I am honored to serve as president of the Millard Business Community Foundation (MBCF). In 2010, as president-elect of the Millard Business Association (MBA), I was part of the team given the task of forming the Millard Business Community Foundation. The growth of the scholarship program and Project Wee Care were the reasons the MBA board felt it was time to make this step. As a result, the MBCF has been able to grow the philanthropic programs started by the MBA. The foundation has also increased our partnerships with area organizations, churches and schools as we join together to help our neighbors in need. Our programs reach Millard students by partnering with the Millard Public Schools’ 40 Assets program, which teaches students the value of volunteering and helping others. Our scholarship program has awarded $65,000 in scholarships to Millard and Skutt Catholic graduates since 2003. Under the MBCF we have been able to increase the number of scholarships awarded to six $1,000 scholarships per year. Since 2006, Project Wee Care has touched the lives of more than 1,956 Millard families in need. Our PWC holiday program has grown by more than 90 percent since 2006. We have supported
the Millard School’s ELL summer school program since 2011 by providing school supplies to students. In 2017, volunteers helped PWC reach an amazing goal by helping 10,505 of our Millard neighbors when they needed it most. It has also been an honor to serve on the Millard Schools Superintendent’s Advisory Committee and on the steering committee representing the MBCF, MBA and PWC since 2014. Each year, I am amazed at the continued growth and reach into the Millard community that the great volunteers and supporters of the MBCF and MBA continue to achieve. These achievements show that Millard is a great place to live and do business. Many thanks to all our supporters who have made this growth possible. Project Wee Care Project Wee Care is a volunteer group that has been providing food, clothing and gifts to families in the Millard area since 2006. Each year the Millard Business Community Foundation partners with Millard Business Association members, Millard Schools’ staff and students, local service organizations, churches and area residents to help families during the holidays. During the first year of outreach in 2006, PWC served 22 families. This number has increased each year. In 2017, 299 families (1,324 people) benefited from the generosity of this group in partnership with the surrounding Millard community. Since 2011, the group has also reached out to a specially funded summer school program within the Millard Public Schools. The program supports students and their families with learning opportunities as well as family activities. “With this program, we know these children will have lunch, and PWC has helped out by giving each child a gift such as a storybook per week,” said Paula Teetor, Project Wee Care co-chair and Foundation President. The children are also given a new backpack filled with school supplies for the new
school year. The group set a record by the end of 2017 for the program. “This year our volunteers are proud to be able to say we have achieved an amazing goal. We have touched the lives of 10,505 of our neighbors when help was needed,” Teetor said. Each year the group has seen an increase in the needs in the Millard community. The growing need is illustrated by the increase in the number of free and reduced lunch applications within Millard Public Schools. In the 2016-17 school year, nearly 18% of families in the district qualified for the program. Millard has also seen an increase in Title I schools (composed of a student body where at least 40 percent are from low-income families), according to Teetor. Millard school counselors and MBA members refer families who are in need of help to PWC. “We’ve had families from all 35 schools in the Millard School District apply for help this year,” Teetor said. Project Wee Care, local schools, area churches, and local organizations hold a variety of different drives, including food, clothing, and sundries.

Sponsors are needed to help fill basic needs of children and families during the holiday season. Clothing, gloves and even personal care items like makeup or mouthwash can make a big difference in a child’s life. Please consider signing up to be a sponsor.
Basic household supplies such as laundry soap are always needed. Besides gifts and food, sundries are handed out on distribution day at the North Pole.

The North Pole The year culminates in Distribution Day at the “North Pole.” Since 2016, the magic has happened at the Ron Witt Support Services Center, 13737 Industrial Road, courtesy of Millard Public Schools. Santa greets children as they arrive with their families at the North Pole. Approximately 140 PWC volunteers assist the families on Distribution
Day alone, representing more than 600 volunteer hours. Cash donations to PWC help purchase perishable items. The group also gives personal care items that can’t be purchased with food stamps. Children get a ticket to spend in the PWC “store” so they can have a gift to give their family. Often when families who have re-

ceived help from PWC get back on their feet, they come back to help others. “Every year we have had a family give back to the program in some way, either donating their time, sponsoring a family or giving a percentage of their proceeds from their business,” said Jennifer Ensz, Co-Chair and Vice President of the Foundation.

Encouraging kids to help One of the goals of Project Wee Care is to encourage children to help others by giving them an opportunity to volunteer. Like many schools, we have an opportunity to share our resources of time, goods and money with our “neighbors” in many different ways. The students help count and sort items into family boxes, decorate gift bags and create a banner. They are putting service into action. This is where they see that they can and do make a difference,” said Angie Loberg, Rohwer Elementary third grade teacher.

aste the fun at this all-day event. The sixth annual Ribstock BBQ Festival arrives this summer on July 28! The original event was born of one thought and a few conversations. After a meeting between Kenny Engelmeyer and the father-and-son barbecue team of Steve Gehring and his son Jeff Gehring, the event took off. Event organizers plan to continue building on the previous years’ success, utilizing local BBQ vendors and giving festival goers a true taste of Omaha barbecue and all it has to offer. This event is a fundraiser for the Millard Business Association and Project Wee Care. The all-day free family event will feature a pre-party including beer and wine tastings, Bib & a Rib contest, championship rib vendors, kids zone, beer garden, live music, fireworks and more! 2017 MBA Annual Awards Celebration

he Millard Business Association (MBA), along with the Millard Business Community Foundation (MBCF), works year-round to promote and preserve the Millard business community and the members of our organization. The 14th Annual Awards Celebration was held May 4th at Noah’s Event Venue with a “Magic Among the Stars” theme. The event was orchestrated by Leah Johnson, Omaha Muscians Live, in conjunction with the MBA Awards Celebration committee. More than 200 guests and dignitaries attended. The evening began with a cocktail hour, networking and silent auction. After dinner the MBCF presented six Millardarea graduating high school seniors with $1,000 college scholarships. Following tradition, Millard Hall of Fame inductees were introduced, the Millard Landmark Award was presented, and several member businesses and businesspersons were honored with prestigious recognition in five distinct categories. In addition, the MBCF presented CARE Awards to individuals who participated in Project Wee Care and went above and beyond to help families in need in the Millard area.

Jennifer joined the MBA when she started Lamar in 2014. As a member of the Accelerator referral group, she became involved in many MBA events, including the golf scramble and Project Wee Care. As the Civic Connections Chair for the Board of Directors, Jennifer joined the Millard Days committee. Professional of the Year — Todd Baumbach — Primerica Financial Services Todd has been a member of the MBA since October of 2013, and served three years as the Educational chair. He is a member of the FUN referral group. Todd is actively involved in all the MBA functions and served in some capacity on all committees and events over the last 5 years. Todd is a strong supporter of the MBA and is constantly inviting and recruiting
individuals to visit the many opportunities and events the MBA has to offer. As a regional vice president with Primerica, Todd has been helping families earn more income, and become properly protected, debt free and financially independent for 24 years.
Landmark Award — Millard Days Inc. Millard Days got its start as a barbecue in a Millard park in 1964. Now, 53 years later, the celebration is a full week of activities, organized by a committee of 16 Millard area groups. Volunteers from multiple businesses and community organizations work together to bring the event to life. Millard Days includes a carnival, parade, car show, family fun and safety tent, and live entertainment. From carnival rides for the kids to a beer tent and

horseshoes for the adults. From vendor tents to the car show, Millard Days provides a great week of activities for all ages. Millard Days Inc. strives for community betterment, benevolence in charitable giving, and educational and public service within the Millard School District. The nonprofit has given more than $500,000 in grants to community programs over the past five decades.

2017 MBA Annual Awards Celebration Scholarship Recipients Millard North High School Scholarship Recipient — Jacquelyn Velasco During Jacquelyn’s time at Millard North, she made an impact on those around her. At Countryside Community church she assisted families with financial needs to receive groceries and donations, and served as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking families. She helped babysit children at the Mexican Consulate,
organized donated clothing at the Open Door Mission, and assisted with fixing up a family home through the Camacho Project. She lettered in Band and Academics. Jacquelyn participated in band, color guard, speech, jazz band, soccer, spanish club, and Family Career and Community Leaders of America.
Millard South High School Scholarship Recipient — Rachel McClannan Rachel was involved in DECA, serving as a Junior and Senior officer. She served on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council as well as the Principal Student Advisory Board. She participated on the Millard South PIT Crew, Millard South Varisty Swim Team, and also swam with the Millard Aquatic Club.
Her volunteer and community hours include Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Lydia House Diaper Drive, SiennaFrancis House Blanket Drive, Vacation Bible School group leader, The Special Olympics, Project Harmony Clothing drive, Holling Heights Elementry volunteer, and Village Pointe event volunteer.
Millard West High School Scholarship Recipient — Tanner Kalb Tanner was best known for his work ethic and leadership skills, both on and off the football field. Tanner played varsity football for Millard West for three years and served as Captain his senior year. He maintained an outstanding GPA while also holding a part time job and refereeing basketball at the YMCA.
His public service included St. Stephen’s the Martyr Catholic Church, the Special Olympics of Nebraska, and the Woodman Life Chapter. Through athletics, community service and the work force, Tanner knows what hard work is, and is a role model for those around him.
Skutt Catholic High School Scholarship Recipient — McKenna Schmidt Mckenna participated in a wide range of activities at Skutt. As an active member of the colorguard, Poetry Out Loud, National Art Honors Society, Skyhawks for Life, Health Occupation student Association and trapshooting Makenna proved that she is one enthusiastic, hard working young woman.
She has also donated her time, service, and talents to our community, spending time in nursing homes, volunteering with Omaha Public schools, the Open Door Mission, Mosaic Inc., The Bethlehem House, Project Linus and the Winnebago Indian Reservation.
Millard South High School We Are All Patriots Scholarship Recipient — Czamia Parker Czamia was nominated by her science teacher, Mrs. Kimberly Ziegler. Despite challenges in her home life, Czamia will graduate high school early, as a junior, so she can move to Kansas and establish residency. This mature decision will allow her to receive in-state tuition
at the hair and cosmetology school of her choice. Czamia greets the world with optimism and has the amazing ability to think beyond the here and now. No matter the challenges she faces, she looks to the future without hesitation.
Millard West High School We Are All Patriots Scholarship Recipient — Minwook Chae Minwook was nominated by his school Counselor Amy Reoh and Orchestra Director Patricia Ritchie. Minwook has been raised by his mother. A self-educated, strong, independent woman who he respects greatly. Minwook has an appreciative attitude for his educa-

tional opportunity and does not take it for granted. He never complains about the work load and truly dedicates himself to his studies and any opportunity that arises.

2017 MBA Annual Awards Celebration Hall of Fame Inductee Deborah Swenson, LIMHP Deborah Swenson was born in Imperial, Nebraska, where she attended grade school and high school. She completed her bachelors in human services at the College of St. Mary and then earned her Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Deborah had grown up with a family who was active in the community and church. She is always doing her best to carry on that tradition and has dedicated her life to helping others. She worked in the human services field since the age of 16, working with her parents in a nursing home, but truly began her profession in 1984. She has a wonderful husband, Bob, five children and 16 grandchildren. After moving to Omaha in 2001, she found a home with the Millard Business Association. She joined the MBA after attending her first event in 2004. She held several positions on committees and on the board. She was the first female MBA President in 2006. While she was President she only missed one MBA activity. But she is most proud of what they were able to accomplish. She recalls the astounding number of board meetings that were held, but she was bound and determined to
make sure the MBA was a success. In the early days of Project Wee Care, Deborah was there to help. PWC actually began with the Millard Jaycees and after a couple of years Deborah was instrumental in launching Project Wee Care into what it has become today. The idea was families adopting families. They started with 15 families and she served as president of that organization for two years. Without her efforts Project Wee Care would not be what it is today. She has been in The Nooners, which is one of the first referral groups, and also WIRED. She received Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006 and Citizen of the Year in 2012. Deborah now focuses her attention on her practice: Deborah Swenson, LIMHP (Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner). Last year was difficult for Deborah — she lost her great nephew and her best friend. The one thing her dad always said was, “When you get knocked down, you either stay down or you get back up,” and no matter what challenges Deborah has encountered... she has always gotten back up.

Tribute to Ed Leistad, February 11, 1943–October 2, 2017 Ed Leistad was a charter member of the MBA in July 2003. He made Pete Greve, his employee and nephew, an active member. When Pete passed away in 2009, Ed became the active MBA member and replaced Pete on the MBA’s TGIF referral group and served as their president. Ed remained a TGIF member until his death in October. Ed served on the MBA board from 2011 through 2015, and was membership cochairman with Kenny Engelmeyer. In that time, they increased the MBA membership from 180 members to more than 400. Ed served on the directory committee for several years, working as the chairman in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Even though he was battling cancer, Ed signed on to chair the 2017 directory committee and produce the 2018 directory. In 2014, he was awarded the MBA professional of the year award. functions such as the Big O Show and the Western Douglas County Expo. At these events, he was there from opening to close, promoting the MBA and soliciting prospective members. He committed himself to the MBA in a remarkable way: He lived in Atlantic, Iowa, and commuted back and forth. Ed was inducted into the MBA hall of fame in 2016. Ed graduated from Northwest Missouri State College with a degree in accounting. He borrowed money and purchased the geographic rights for eight counties in Iowa to sell Safeguard products. He later purchased the franchise rights for the state of Nebraska and had been a franchise owner/ distributor for Safeguard ever since. Ed expanded the business from a oneman operation to include eight associate partners and seven personal employees operating in seven locations throughout Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Known as a great sports enthusiast, he made it a priority to attend every game and event of his grandchildren and great children. Ed was also an avid golf enthusiast. Ed is survived by his wife, Debbie, two children, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, sister Sonja Larsen and brothers Arnie (Vicki) Leistad and Roger (Barb) Leistad.

Tribute to Kelly Wills, Nov. 25, 1960-Jan. 10, 2017 Kelly J. Wills attended the first public meeting of what became the Millard Business Association in April 2003. Called by MBA Co-Founders Ron Fechner and Steve Andersen to form a business group to help the Millard area businesses grow and prosper, Kelly immediately joined. Kelly was a member of the original steering committee of 13 people who designed the name and structure of the Millard Business Association, the by-laws, membership rules, fees and the core objectives and how to achieve them. He was a charter member of the MBA and was responsible for a quick surge of membership while serving as Membership Chair in the early years. Kelly served on the MBA board in many capacities and offices, including as President in 2007. Kelly was inducted into the MBA Hall of Fame in 2013. Kelly was a life-long Millardite and gave back to the community in many ways. He was a member of the Millard Jaycees and took on many roles. In 1994 he ran for and was elected to be National Vice President of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce. Kelly
was elected President of the Junior Chamber in 1995. During his time with the National Junior Chamber from 1994 to 2000 Kelly traveled to 49 states and 44 countries doing more than 4,000 press conferences and interviews. Kelly served on Millard Public Schools Superintendent Keith Lutz’s Advisory Council. In 2006, he brought the idea of the Millard Jaycees’ Project Concern program — helping less-fortunate families in the Millard area — to the MBA and started Project Wee Care. In the past 11 years Project Wee Care has helped more than 10,000 people with food, clothing and gifts during the Christmas holiday season. They currently help Millard area students and their families all year. Kelly is survived by his wife, Patti, seven children, three grandchildren, brother Jerry (Tina) Wills and sisters Florence (Brian) Stevenson and Michele Huls.
