CASS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Cass County Historical Society was organized in 1936. Early displays were housed at the Cass County Courthouse. In 1960, the museum opened in its current location on Main Street. There are several permanent exhibits that tell the history of Plattsmouth and Cass County, including part of the western migration. The society also maintains three historic structures: the Joseph and Mary Cook Log Cabin, originally built in Mynard in 1868; a Burlington caboose built in 1913; and Rock Bluff School, a one-room brick schoolhouse southeast of Plattsmouth that was built in 1870. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
P
artnership defines economic development in Plattsmouth. The Chamber of Commerce, Cass County Nebraska Economic Development Council (CCNEDC), Nebraska Public Power District and City of Plattsmouth work together to recruit new businesses and strengthen those who have already invested in the community. Clear evidence of success is found simply by looking at retail sales and the recognition Plattsmouth has earned from others.
Nebraska Department of Economic Development as “ready for economic development.” That certification has made Plattsmouth eligible for CDBG funds very beneficial to the local business community. The Nebraska Chapter of the American Planning Association recently recognized Plattsmouth for the successful long-term implementation of its comprehensive plan as it relates to the wide array of improvements in the Plattsmouth Main Street Historic District.
Net taxable retail sales have risen 20 percent in recent years.

EDUCATION Illustrating the district’s commitment to its students, outdoor classrooms were installed at the early childhood center and the elementary school. The early childhood program is recognized by the Nebraska Department of Education as a model program for positive behavior support. The elementary 21st Century before- and afterschool program consistently receives some of the highest ratings of any programs in Nebraska. A middle school 21st Century after-school program was recently started to support students and families. The wall-to-wall academies of Plattsmouth High School reflect students’ interests and career goals. Students are grouped by academies, creating smaller learning communities within the high school. Combining a core group of teachers with students having similar interests helps create a sense of belonging. Students have a chance to take part in designed programs of study, receiving industry certifications and real-world experience through job shadowing, internships, business mentorships and partnerships with businesses in related fields.

EDUCATION Private schools Plattsmouth has two private schools. St. John the Baptist Catholic School and First Baptist School. First Baptist offers a Christian-focused education from kindergarten through 12th grade.
S
t. John the Baptist Catholic School offers a rich academic tradition, grounded in a Christ-centered loving environment. Students perform above national averages in every academic field and are among the highest-scoring students in high schools. With a focus on Catholic sacraments and tradition, students live their faith in action through service to others and daily Mass attendance at the parish, Church of the Holy Spirit.
The school offers four levels of education: 3-year-old Pre-K, 4-year old Pre-K, Elementary School (K-5th grade), and Junior High (6th-8th grade). There is also an extended care program from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

EDUCATION
F
irst Baptist School exists to serve families, build leaders, and educate minds through traditional values and timeless education. First Baptist is a Christcentered atmosphere and provides a loving, safe environment for all students in K-12. We desire to see children reach their full God-given potential academically, socially, and spiritually and prepare them for them for the next step in their lives. Students achieve high academic results and test above average in national standardize testing. First Baptist also offers many elective, sports and fine arts programs to promote balance in the student life.
The average Nebraska homeowner pays about $3.56 to keep the lights on, the appliances running, and the room temperature perfect for 24 hours. A drive-thru meal costs more public power is all about.

LAKE LIVING
N
earby lake communities of Beaver Lake, Buccaneer Bay and Copper Dollar Cove offer unique settings for those who want the tranquil, calming atmosphere a lake can offer.
Beaver Lake
Buccaneer Bay, situated in the rolling hills of northeast Cass County, includes Bay Hills Golf Club, two lakes, numerous wooded areas and views of the Platte River. The Beaver Lake Association is an active community of homeowners that holds numerous events throughout the year, including fireworks on the Fourth of July and an annual fishing derby. There is also a community clubhouse with a pool. Copper Dollar Cove, about three miles west of Plattsmouth, has two lakes for fishing, canoeing, swimming and water-skiing.
HOUSING
W
ith brick-paved, tree-lined streets and charming historic homes, the “Jewel of the Platte” is a great place to call home. With a median home price of about $120,000, residents enjoy housing prices that are lower than the national average. Plattsmouth is a very affordable place to live, with a cost of living that is about 10 percent lower than the national average. Homes in the city range from historic and stately to modern, with open and flowing floor plans and attached three-car garages. Whatever your preference for a home, you can find it in Plattsmouth.
City parks and schools tie the community together, creating a stronger bond for those who live in Plattsmouth. And with an unemployment rate below 4 percent, Plattsmouth is a very stable community.
There are opportunities for new-home construction both within the city limits and short distances from the city. Many lots do not have builders attached and are ready for custom and semi-custom homes.
Plattsmouth also has housing opportunities for senior living and a senior center that offers meals, both home-delivered and congregate, plus nursing services, health seminars and recreational activities.

HISTORY
P
lattsmouth began in 1852 when Samuel Martin built a trading post on the western edge of the Missouri River. He erected a two-story home and another building from which he traded. Martin also operated a ferry from Coonsville (present-day Glenwood, Iowa). A town-company was formed on Oct. 26, 1854. The following March, the town was incorporated and named the county seat of Cass County. The first town mayor, Wheatley Mickelwait, was elected in 1857. When Plattsmouth was founded, the Missouri River’s close proximity to the east end of Main Street brought extensive trade. Ferries carried passengers across the river, and paddlewheel boats docked at the town’s riverfront. Overland freight became a big industry for the town. The route out of Plattsmouth, having fewer Platte River tributaries to cross, was preferred by many to haul supplies, both military and civilian, to western outposts. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Robert Livingston organized Company A of the First Nebraska Volunteer Regiment and in October 1862 became the regimental commander. After the war, Livingston persuaded the Burlington and Missouri River Rail Road to make Plattsmouth its Nebraska headquarters. Construction of the rail line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln and west to Kearney Junction began in early 1869. By December the first passenger trains were running, crossing the Missouri by ferry until 1880, when a bridge was completed. Meanwhile, the Burlington built shops in Plattsmouth. By 1900, employment at the shops reached a peak between 1,000 and 1,200. Although the territorial legislature designated Plattsmouth the Cass County seat in 1855, it wasn’t until 1888 that a majority of county citizens voted Plattsmouth the seat. The courthouse cornerstone was laid in June 1891 and the Romanesque-style edifice completed in 1892.

An 1871 photo, looking north along the Plattsmouth riverfront.
Car ferries across the Missouri River were replaced in 1930 by a steel truss vehicular bridge, carrying U.S. Highway 34. Since 1931, the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival has been held every year, except during World War II. In 2013 it was renamed the Plattsmouth Harvest Festival. Plattsmouth has had its share of disasters. In June 1961 the Riley Hotel and Parmele Theater, built in 1890 and 1903 respectively, were destroyed by fire. Up from the ashes, the hotel property became the Cass County Bank, and the theater site was added to the Historical Society museum next door. In 1985, the Plattsmouth Downtown Historic District was created with 42 buildings placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Plaques describe each historic structure.
