Little Free Library Sarpy SID Neighborhoods have no free access to public library facilities and this Legacy Project focused on giving these communities the benefits of free and easy access to reading. The group decided to establish Free Little Libraries in select SID neighborhoods. Free Little Library is a community book exchange that provides a space for residents to take books and share books. Free Little Libraries are supported through donation and stewardship. As of April 29th, the group has established their first Little Free Library in the Stonecrest/Meridian Park SID. Over the next 6 months the group anticipates installing four additional locations to provide further reading resources to Sarpy County.

A Legacy of Literacy - Bellevue Public Schools and Partnership 4 Kids The members of this Legacy Project team were also interested in bolstering community access to books, but their path took them to work within the schools. The group worked with Partnership 4 Kids to bring the Book Buddy program into Sarpy County for the first time. P4K’s Book Buddy program is an early education program that focuses on readingreadiness. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are engaged in monthly classroom visits by their Book Buddy. Each student receives their own copy of the books they read each year, so they can build a library at home. They have currently brought the program to Birchcrest Elementary in Bellevue and look forward to expanding over the next few

Sarpy County Recycling Initiative Leadership Sarpy participants wanted to take on the lack of opportunities to recycle in public spaces. They initially met with mayors and administrators from Gretna and Papillion to propose a recycling initiative and gain their support. They ultimately teamed up with Second Nature Public Recycling to put 50 recycling bins in parks, sports facilities and other public venues in Gretna and Papillion. There are 25 bins in each city that were in place by April 1. The next phase of the project includes adding more recycling bin locations and pursuing local businesses to advertise on bins.

Gretna Parks Sign Revitalization The Gretna Parks Sign Revitalization project focused on updating park signs to better reect the dynamic growth of the Gretna community. The team evaluated plan ďŹ nancials, secured community partners and presented their project to the city council. They partnered with the City of Gretna, Metal Logos, and Dolphens Signs & Design to update existing park signs with a fresh look and more durable materials. The new signs are designed to withstand the elements over a lifespan of 20 years.

Municipal County Concept – 2004

The goal of this Legacy Project team was to develop pedestrian and bike paths that link key destination points in the city of Gretna, such as community centers, neighborhoods, parks, and schools. The team planned path resurfacing, signing, pavement marking, as well as designed concepts for streetscape improvements. They sought funding for the project through grants and private funding.

This Legacy Project provided in-depth research into the concept of a Municipal County with special concern for the healthy growth of the cities of Sarpy County. They looked at past proposed resolutions for such an idea and investigated the potential need and possibility of a municipal county. They identified the need to establish features of a municipal county, given the projected growth of communities reaching each other’s city limits. We see elements of this concept today with the creation of the Sarpy County and Sarpy Cities Wastewater Agency.

Entrepreneur’s Guide for Success – 2010

Papillion City Hall Renovation – 2004

The time and energy needed to grow a business venture can be very costly to a small startup. This Legacy Project team created an entrepreneur’s guide to give small businesses a head start in Papillion. To create this comprehensive business resource, the group researched and compiled statistical information on Papillion, including population demographics and traffic flow. The guide also offers in-depth information on grant opportunities, information on obtaining office space, and contacts to local professional organizations.

Papillion’s City Hall received historic renovations, in part, thanks to this Legacy Project team. They identified a need to aesthetically restore and preserve city hall as well as equip it with technology for the future. The team worked with Mayor James Blinn to restore the former district courtroom to its original condition and enhance it with technological upgrades and new desks for the city council and city staff.
