ABOUT ZOO • Zoo is a place where living animals are kept to be exhibited and studied. The name is a popular abbreviation of zoological garden, and most zoos are gardens or parks containing buildings and other enclosures. • Zoos usually keep only wild animals, many of them from distant countries.
CENTRAL ZOO AUTHORITY • In the recent times, there has been growth of zoos in India. Zoos, if managed properly, serve a useful role in the preservation of wild animals. • In India, functioning of zoos is regulated by an autonomous statutory body called Central Zoo Authority which has been constituted under the Wild Life (Protection) Act. Central Zoo Authority was created for overseeing the functioning and development of zoos in the country. • Every zoo in the country is required to obtain recognition from the Authority for its operation. The Authority evaluates the zoos with reference to the parameters prescribed under the Rules and grants recognition accordingly. • The Authority also coordinates and implements programmes on capacity building of zoo pesonnel, planned breeding programmes and research including biotechnological intervention for conservation of species for complementing in-situ conservation efforts in the country. • The zoo will have healthy animals in eco-system based naturalistic enclosure, supportive to in-situ conservation with competent and contented staff, good educational and interpretative facilities, the support of people and self sufficient.
Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park Katraj, Pune.
HISTORY • The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) established a small zoo named Peshwe Park, in 1953 on approximately 7 acres of land, at the base of the Parvati hills. This zoo was located in the heart of the city and was fashioned along the old system of exhibiting animals in concrete cages with iron bars. • There was a need therefore to establish a modern zoo with an objective of providing bigger, better and naturalistic enclosures, in accordance with the Central Zoo Authority guidelines.A new zoo site was thus selected at Katraj and its development was initiated in 1997. • The animals from Peshwe Park were to be shifted to this new zoo site. The zoo was re-named as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Centre (RGZP) was inaugurated on the 14th March 1999.
FACTS • AREA : 130 ACRES • ANIMALS: 362 out of which 20 are mammal species, 28 reptile species and 17 bird species. • WORKFORCE: 100 people
OBJECTIVE • Promote and conserve the Western Ghat species. • Educating the zoo visitors about wildlife such as their food, habitat, lifespan, conservation etc. via the means of appropriate signage and interpretive exhibits • Conducting research on the behaveioral, biological and veterinary aspects of wildlife.

PARELLEL SYSTEM
PARELLEL SYSTEM CONCLUSIONS On the basis of studying parellel zoo systems following observations were noted: Zoos abroad are more interactive and encourage the visitors to know more about zoo conservation and wildlife. Singapore zoo has introduced a campaign to save cheetas where in official who head the graphic deptt in the zoo hve designed games for children to know more about animal conservation. Billabong Bill Australia Zoo Education Centre provides school groups with a truly exclusive experience be it animal encounters or industry insights and many such programs. Feeding of animals is commonly practiced in zoos Living Classrooms’ comprises a dynamic and exciting mÊlange of interactive in-park activities such as enrichment programmes, interdisciplinary trails, overnight camps and behind-the-scenes-tours that enlivens the learning experience for both teachers and students from pre-school to secondary levels

Smriti sharma 23 years
Studies in Fergusson College and has visited Katraj zoo quite often on excursion trips with friends. She has also been to Chinchwad zoo. She is fond of going on treks and outdoor camps. Public amenities provided in Katraj Zoo are located at regular intervals. The recent closedown of canteen was a bit disappointing. The presentation shown during the camp was very long and boring. The whole tour should have been more exciting and fun.
