Leadership Lines By Mendi Brent, Vice President Communications

T

he Communications Council has been busy at work keeping members and the community informed about all League news and happenings. Sharon Kruk, Our View Editor, has already rolled out four issues of Our View and has come up with some new and interesting ideas to keep us all reading. If you are like me and you use our website daily, then you’ve already noticed all the updates Elisabeth Grimes, Internal PR, has made. The website is an excellent resource that everyone should utilize, so be sure to check it out at www.juniorleagueoflufkin.org. Elisabeth also puts together all the fabulous Seat Sheets that are on our tables for every meeting! Then there is April Earley, External PR, who helps keep our public in the loop by writing press releases and doing community projects like Zoo Boo. Oh and be sure to smile if you see Allison James, League Photographer, as she is liable to snap a quick picture of you! All these ladies are doing a wonderful job in their placements and, as always, welcome suggestions. So, if you have a great idea that you would like to share, please do not hesitate to grab one of us. Now, to get everyone involved we would also like a little help! The Communications Council wants to use YOU! Each one of us is like a walking, talking billboard sharing information and news with everyone we see. The League does so many amazing things for the community each year. Let’s be sure we all know a few fast facts that we can share! Fast Facts • The Junior League of Lufkin was started in 1953 by 23 women. • The Junior League of Lufkin has over 100 active members and over 200 sustaining members. • The first Charity Ball was held in March of 1977. • The League conducted vision screening for over 4,500 students last year in Angelina County and has done so almost every year since 1973. • The League distributes at least 5 scholarships annually to high school graduates in Angelina County. • The Lufkin Service League became the Junior League of Lufkin on May 1, 1996. • The Junior League of Lufkin serves the community through Vision Screening, Family Nights, Career Conference, Kids in the Kitchen/Camp Get Fit, MVP, and Back to School Bonanza.

Billie Jean Johnson, LVN Administrator/Owner

• The 2011-2012 Junior League of Lufkin fundraisers are: Annual Campaign, Charity Ball, Spring Market and a 5K Fun Run. • Total disbursed to community and League in 2010-2011 was $117,288.64 • The Back to School Bonanza served approximately 1,300 children. I am looking forward to a great year! Thank you for volunteering and giving back to our community!

October Meeting Welcome to the 2011-2012 Provisional Class!

Pat on the Back

Leslie Day

The Pat on the Back this month goes to a member who stepped in and fulfilled a placement for another member... on the spur of the moment. She also went above and beyond her duties as a provisional last year. We appreciate you, Leslie Day, and you deserve a “Pat on the Back”!

Simply Done

Volunteer of the Month

Julianne Greak

Thanks to the JLL members for supporting our Simply Done projects for the month of October, Books that Benefit and Zoo Boo.

Our Volunteer of the Month is incredibly organized, and if you ask her to do something, you can expect that it will be done thoroughly and quickly. She is a very active mother of two adorable girls, a devoted wife, and would do anything for her family…not to mention she is an awesome cook! Outside of her daily routine with family and Junior League, she volunteers for coffee time and Vacation Bible School at St. Cyprian’s Church. She is a room mom, and is in charge of the Bayou Bash auction display at St. Cyprian’s School. Her friends say she genuinely cares about what is going on in other’s lives. She has a great sense of humor and a contagious laugh and will drop what she is doing to listen to a problem. Congratulations, Julianne Greak, Volunteer of the Month.

Sprint into Spring 5K Run and 1 Mile Kid’s Fun Run By Julianne Greak, Secretary

I

am honored to be chairing the first ever Junior League of Lufkin 5K Run and 1 Mile Kid’s Fun Run. This is going to be a spectacular event! The fun run will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Crown Colony Country Club. The 1 Mile Kid’s Run will start promptly at 8:00 a.m. and the 5K race will start at 8:30 a.m. Children ages 5 – 12 years of age will be able to register for the kid’s run. Ages for the 5K race range in age from 10 years to 80 plus! If you are not a runner, do not fear! We welcome walkers! This will be a “chipped-time” event. For those of you who are unfamiliar with that term, it means that we are using a timing device attached to your running bid number that will clock the exact time it takes you to run the 3.1 miles or 1 mile race. Awards will be presented to the first male and first female to cross the finish line for the 5K and 1 Mile race. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age division. We have some awesome sponsors for this event. We are excited to have Smoothie King making sample smoothies after the race and Cindy Hammond with Body In Sync available to give massages before and after the race! JLL Member Renee Robertson will be responsible for course safety and JLL Member Paula Werner will ensure that all aid stations for the 5K race and 1 mile kid’s run will have plenty of water. Registration for this event is $25.00 per participant through March 23rd. If you register the morning of the event, the cost will increase to $30.00 per participant. You can obtain a registration form by going to www. juniorleagueoflufkin.org, and printing the form from our website and mailing in your registration information and money or you can go to www.active.com and register online. Please go to www.facebook.com/JLL5K and “Like” the page. The name of our page is called JLL Sprint into Spring 5K Fun Run. I will be providing you with race information updates such as where and when we will have packet pick up the day before the race. I have already posted the course map for the 5K and 1 Mile Kid’s Run on our facebook page. If you have any questions about the event or would like to help out the morning of the race, please contact me at jcgreak@yahoo.com. Happy Training!

I

want to express a huge amount of THANKS to everyone for the amazing Salad Supper turnout! We had the most incredible display of fabulous food! The Merry Christmas Social is just around the corner. We are blessed to have our Social this year at the most spectacular home of Sustainer, Ann Watson. Her home is decorated for the holidays like none other! She transforms her home into a Christmas showplace with the help of her daughter and JLL Active, Tara Watson-Watkins. We will have the meal catered by Classic Fare from Nacogdoches. On the menu...Italian Pasta Entree, Salad, from scratch breads and dessert! Our special friend, Dan Huerta, will be doing the wine selections of the evening. Be on the lookout for more information. We hope you can make it! The Done in a Meeting activity for the Merry Christmas Social will benefit a few families from Herty Elementary School. We are asking each of you to generously donate gift cards (Target or Walmart) in order to help make a child’s Christmas merry and bright. $5, $10, $20...anything is appreciated! Sustainer Cindy Tierney is the Principal at Herty and will personally purchase gifts for these special children during the holiday. She will be able to do this because of your kindness collected at the Merry Christmas Social. Thanks so much in advance for your help!

MVP By Anita Boyd, MVP Chair

T

he Middle School Volunteer Program (MVP) is underway for the 2011 – 2012 school year. We have had a fantastic turn out for volunteers. There are fifty-four students signed up from Lufkin Middle School and seventeen students from Hudson Middle School. This is a fantastic number of kids wanting to give their time to our wonderful community. They are excited and thrilled about getting to help out where help is needed! As many of you know, I teach at Lufkin Middle School. Mrs. Evans, my principal, has allowed me to have my MVP volunteers during my advisory period, which is once a week for thirty minutes at the end of the day. This is a blessing! I will have 6th, 7th, and 8th graders during this time, most of whom I will not know. This advisory time will give me a chance to get to know these kids on a personal basis. It will also give the students time to get to know one another and, hopefully, they will build some long-lasting friendships. It also gives us time to prepare for our upcoming events, and I will have that personal contact to remind them of events that will soon be taking place. We have several activities planned for the upcoming months. October was Adopt-A-Dog month at the Kurth Memorial Animal Shelter. The volunteers made posters for “October Adopt-A-Dog” awareness. The posters were displayed throughout the community to encourage adoption of homeless puppies. The volunteers also cleaned “Paw Park” and helped to walk and bathe the puppies. The Animal Shelter is continuing to ask for donations of newspaper, paper towels, dry dog food, and toys to accommodate the needs of homeless animals. At the end of October, MVP will be assisting Anne Reyes and the Museum of East Texas with their October Pumpkin Patch activity. The students will have various responsibilities throughout the day to help make the day a huge success for the children of Angelina County. In the month of November, MVP will be going to the Angelina County Senior Citizen’s Center. The American Legion is graciously allowing the volunteers to help sort through and pack supplies for soldiers. The volunteers will also be making Christmas cards, during their advisory time, to be sent along with the supplies. What a super experience for these kids! During the month of December, the MVP volunteers will be going to the Lufkin State School. Here they are going to be assisting the staff with the giftwrapping of numerous Christmas presents. This will be another fantastic act of service for our volunteers. These are just a few of the volunteering events that MVP will be doing from now until the end of December. As you may have noticed, some of the months will have two community projects. I think this will work well with the total of seventy volunteers. I won’t need seventy kids at one event, so I can split the group and give them the option of which event they would 10 November 2011

like to attend. Hopefully, this will give everyone a chance to participate in some activity. I also have community projects lined up for the spring, January through May. As soon as I have confirmation dates from these organizations, I will let the League know. If there are any questions, concerns, or suggestions, you can email me at aboyd@lufkinisd.org. The MVP volunteers are eager to begin their community service. I know this will be a great year for everyone involved! I want to say a special thank you in advance to parents for transporting their children to and from our functions. I know everyone is busy, and this is just one more thing to add to the list of things to do…….but, it will be worth it! Thank you again, and God bless to all!

Family Fun Night By Lindsey Goforth, Family Fun Night Chair

O

ur first Family Fun Night was a great success at Kurth Primary on October 18. We served almost 300 individuals a pizza dinner. We were very excited to host Principal and Rev. Don Jackson as our speaker regarding ways parents can be involved in their child’s education. We had very exciting activities for the kids, including: ball skills (thanks to Coach Jeff Cook), games, Bingo, puppet show and cheerleading. We were also fortunate to have a few organizations available to help educate families about resources available in our community, including: Kurth Library, Lufkin ISD Technology, and Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council. We had a fantastic evening at one of Lufkin’s great schools! We will also be hosting Family Fun Night at Burley Primary on November 15 and Brookhollow Elementary on March 6. We are excited about reaching out to our community through our school-age children and their parents. Please come join us at these great events!

Focus on the Community grief, and the JLL provides the necessary funds to support these programs. While bereavement is a required service mandated by the regulatory agencies, no funds are allocated to cover the expense. The funds received by the Junior League of Lufkin are used to develop programs for children through grief camps, literature, and resources. Recently Executive Director Demetress Harrell collaborated with the Stephen F. Austin State University Theater Arts division on a play devoted to the loss of a child titled “Rabbit Hole.” Demetress Harrell presented on the impact of children suffering the loss of a loved one. Hospice in the Pines also created “grief kits” with a foundation in Austin, Texas which are distributed across the nation to families of fallen soldiers. These kits are given to each hospice family, as well and have proven effective in managing grief, especially the age specific book written by Executive Director, Demetress Harrell, which is used to guide ver 25 years ago the remarkable service of Hospice parents and professionals on measures to help children cope with in the Pines entered the Angelina County community. death. In the Words of Nike - Just Do It! By Kathi White

I

am once again dragging myself to Zumba and to get on exercise equipment that I promised to use if I just got it. It is so easy to set yourself up for failure when it comes to working out. You know - like making those New Year’s Resolutions – which are just around the corner. Taking care of SELF, especially if you live a multi-tasking lifestyle filled with a family, a job, volunteering, etc. YOU become the least of your worries. I believe it is inherent in most women to give, give, give, and do for others to ensure everyone in our lives is happy, healthy and wise, until we just throw ourselves away. Examine this! You go, go, go and do, do, do until you get that slap in the face telling you to STOP and smell the roses and take care of SELF. This could be anything from a health issue to just catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and thinking “OMG!” For me it was precisely that- a health issue. One that required me to make a choice between having surgery or taking a shot that has one of the worst side effects in most women’s eyes – weight gain. STOP – pause here for VANITY. The obvious key to staying healthy and keeping the weight off is eating healthier and exercising, right? It should be so easy! You join a gym or some other exercise program – boot camp, Zumba, Pilates, yoga, etc., and you’re feeling good. But then life happens (working late, meetings, Mom time) and before you know it, a week has passed without much exercise and the next battle of the bulge is staring you in the face. These days for me, if I go a week without being active, then the hips, thighs and midriff are like inflated balloons. And that glimpse in the

mirror becomes my slap in the face. I have the will and the want to get to Zumba everyday or to get on that machine and get moving – but life just sometimes gets in the way – of course usually at my urging. I love Zumba and dancing and feel like a million bucks with steady attendance. I think back to those days of being an athlete in high school and continuing to be active well into the mid-30s and then just letting go because everything else in life (kids, family, volunteering, stuff) became more important than “ME.” So to you ladies, especially those under 30, never stop exercising or doing some kind of physical activity to help you stay fit. I tell my 24 and 26-year-old daughters this all the time. It is good to be a little selfish. Your body will thank you for it because starting from scratch in your 40s is tough. Exercising and eating right really will keep you feeling and looking better. Just Do It!

A Walk Down Memory Lane October 3, 1997

highlight of 1997 was a reception held at the Museum of East Texas in October honoring the First Lady of Texas, Laura Bush. The guest list included Sustainers, Actives, Provisionals, M.E.T. Board members, L.I.S.D. Superintendent David Sharp and L.I.S.D. School Board members. As a sustaining member of the Junior League of Austin, the First Lady of Texas used her public role to highlight education in Texas and promoted a statewide reading initiative, the First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative for Texas, which focused on the reading skills of entire families. League President Emily Watts wrote about the exciting event in the October issue of the League Laments and said, “I hope you feel as I do that Mrs. Bush is not so different from us. Yes, her schedule is quite a bit more exciting than ours, but we care about the same things. We care about women’s and children’s issues, and we take pride in the work we do to improve those in our community. We are wives, we are mothers, we are volunteers!”

usan Morgan and Ginger Bates did a great job with the decorations, food and arrangements for the Sustainer Fall Coffee and Meeting. We received our Purple Book (formerly called the Blue Book). Sustainer President, Barbara Peterson and Active League Members, Jennifer Webster, Lora Huerta, Tara Watkins, Emily Parks and Hilary Walker previewed the upcoming year and informed us of ways that we can help. Barbara distributed a service survey for us to indicate our areas of interest. From those returned at the end of the meeting, you have already volunteered to help in 74 placements! Linda Malnar will be emailing the survey to Sustainers, so if you missed the meeting, you can still sign up to help. Let Barbara know if you prefer to receive yours by postal mail. Her contact information is: phone - 936-637-7689, address – 1501 Woodland Drive, Lufkin, 75904 and email – bpeterson@consolidated.net. Contact Lisa Griffin or Kathi Johnson if you have questions. Later in the Spring, Len Medford, Jane Johnson and Judy Perry will put together our Spring Social event. Janice Ann and Ernest Rowe entertained grandchildren Isabelle, 16, George, 15, and Sarah, 12, while her daughter, Nancy Jumper Herde, and husband, Michael, were in town celebrating Nancy’s 30th LHS reunion. Thanks to Cinda Taylor and her daughter, Mollie, Isabelle and George made new friends in Lufkin. Things are different in New Canaan, Connecticut for “high schoolers”! They want to come back for another visit. Their oldest daughter, Hannah, attends Wellesley College in Massachusetts and could not come. Dr. Dan and Barbara Carter are proud grandparents again. Lila Catherine arrived to Dr. Jason and Nicole Carter on Sunday, September 25. She weighed 7 pounds and 13 ounces. Her big sister, Claire, is 3 years old.
