The 36th Annual Charity Ball By Lora Huerta, Charity Ball Chair

T

he New Year’s Eve Ball was a beautiful and eventful evening! So many people to thank for such an amazing event – Tara, Courtney, Paula, Vanessa, Kathryn, Stephanie, Cindy, April and Dana – thank you all so much! I know you are all as relieved as I am that NYE is behind us and we can now look forward to SPRING MARKET! I’d like to also thank Crown Colony for such an amazing job – Len, Angie and their staff were wonderful – we could not have been happier with the food, drinks or service! And that waffle bar. . .yummo! Also, we had great feedback from the husbands this year! The feel of the ball was more intimate and relaxed without taking away the glamour that we all love about the ball. I’m glad the guys had a good time – that we all had such a fun time! The band and the dance floor were really rockin’ – we could have partied on, but all good things must end! As we discussed in the Cottage Meetings, we will soon be making recommendations on the transition of Charity Ball to NYE and the future of this fundraiser for our League. As this year was a transitional year for Charity Ball, I feel that we will have a better understanding of just how the fundraiser will be received by our community and our League members after the 37th Ball. There are several challenges to the New Year’s Eve date to consider, but we have learned lots of things this year which will help us have an even more successful event next time. I know that Tara will do an amazing job, and that we will ring in 2013 at an unforgettable party! I’ll be there with bells on – ok, maybe not bells, but certainly with a smile, support for my friend Tara, the new Charity Ball Committee and the Junior League of Lufkin!

Spring Market By Kim Herman, Spring Market Chair

A

s I write this article in mid January, it is hard to believe that a new year is upon us and we are less than three months away from Spring Market. Times flies when you’re having fun and I have enjoyed representing the League as Chair of Spring Market. I was wondering how it all would turn out, but things are falling into place and I have an awesome committee to thank. I could not do it without their hard work and support! Tickets should be ready at the February meeting for the Spring Market committee, subcommittee, provisionals and any other actives (who would like to sell) to begin selling. Pre-Sale Tickets are $5.00 and make great teacher gifts. If you want to sell and are not required, please let Michelle Combs know so she can have tickets ready for you. We will also be selling shirts to anyone who would like one. There will be 2 designs, so I encourage you to order one or both if you will be attending Spring Market each day. Louis Vuitton will also be at February’s meeting. No, not the person, but the handbag that Melissa Roberts and Keela Morgan so graciously volunteered to go get. I’m thinking they just wanted a girl’s getaway. Speaking of girls…the Girls Night Out Pre-Party will be Thursday, April 19th from 6-9pm. Rebecca Brightwell is working on the menu for the event. Two lucky winners will each win a $100 gift certificate to be spent at the market. Great vendor discounts will also be happening that night only. So grab your best pals and come out for a fun and festive night! Susan Harris and Lisa Griffin are planning a tasty luncheon with all the fashions from our vendors. The AC Pom Squad will be volunteering as models and Lisa plans to have entertainment for us. More details are coming, so keep watching! One thing that makes our Spring Market stand out from other league markets is our hospitality. Our vendors love how we pamper and feed them. To carry on this tradition, Keela Morgan will need your help again. She will have a sign-up sheet at either February or March’s meeting for your opportunity to help. Hmmm….decorations?? I am not a crafty person. I can come up with ideas in my head but actually putting it together does not work out so well. However, Samie Montes is a decorating guru. She ensures me that our decorations will be along the theme of “Live. Laugh. Love. SHOPPING” and be ‘springy’. We will all be looking forward to seeing her creativity! For any event to be successful, publicity is a must. Word of mouth is the cheapest, yet most powerful way to get the word out. If you know of a new business in town who might display a Spring Market poster, please let me or Karen Ronaghan know. Last, but definitely not least, are our vendors. Without them, there would be no Spring Market. Numbers are low at this time but should pick up as the time nears. Last year, we had 55 vendors and our goal is to have at least the same. Recently, Melissa and I had a chance to look at the changes that have taken place at the Civic Center. Inside, we have lost at least two booths but will be able to add two or three more booths in the lobby. Last year we were able to have two vendors take advantage of the open area left after the luncheon/style show. We would like to add additional booths in this area for smaller, local businesses to set up. If you know of any new & exciting vendors, let Melissa Roberts, Tracie McClesky or myself know. They can also visit the JLL website to download an application. The reason I love Spring Market is because it is something for all ages to do. It is a great time for a Mother/Daughter outing or for girlfriends to get together without the kids. To tie in our mission with fashion, we will have a “High Heels and Bling” corner. We will be collecting gently worn high heels and accessories to be donated to ADAC to help area high school young ladies get ready for the prom. Thanks to everyone for supporting the Spring Market! May God Bless!

T

he time for Spring Market is fast approaching. Members who will receive 10 tickets ($50.00 worth) to sell are those on the Spring Market Committee, a Sub-Committee, board members, and half of the provisional class. Donna Ross will have a list of provisionals who will be selling tickets for Spring Market. Also, any active member is welcome to sell tickets. If over the course of the next couple of months anyone needs more tickets, just give me a call and I will be happy to deliver more to you! You can reach me at 875-6025.

Words of Gratitude

The Junior League Prayer We pray that we will never be so blind That our small world is all we ever see, Or so supremely satisfied, That what we are is all we ever want to be. Give us the joy of feeling someone’s need, Make us gracious followers; Make gracious those who lead. And more than all, We pray that through the years we will remember that there are always new frontiers.

he Lufkin State Supported Living Center is a 24 hour residential facility that is home to 368 people who have been diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The facility is designated as a center that will serve children. Over the years it has been viewed by many as a “mini city” as it has 21 campus homes, a medical clinic, a diner, therapy programs, a beauty salon, Chapel, parks, wooded retreat, senior citizen programming, recreation and much more. The facility is the third largest employer in Angelina County with 1,188 allocated positions and it is estimated that the local economy is stimulated at least $100 million annually by the center, staff and the residents. Motivational Minute

The Gift of Giving By Heather Kartye

D

uring the recent holiday season, I found myself pausing and taking note of the generosity of our community. It seemed that around every corner there was someone doing some good deed for someone else. Large or small, these acts of kindness were significant and made a difference in the lives of others. And this had me bursting with pride to know that the residents of Lufkin and Angelina County truly embody the old adage that it is better to give than it is to receive. The giving spirit is all around us here in this community. The Angelina County United Way annual campaign recently raised more than $700,000 to support more than 20 local agencies; this marked the 64th consecutive year of exceeding their goal. And speaking of local agencies, the magnitude of non-profit organizations in the community always amazes me. Entities exist here to serve a multitude of purposes, including the Senior Citizens Center, CASA, Boys and Girls Club, CISC, Love, Inc., Mosaic Center, Humane Society, and the list goes on. We are blessed to have so many resources right here in our area. Our community always sticks together when times are tough. I am continually in awe when tragedy strikes, whether it be loss of a home through fire, death of a loved one, illness or financial set-backs, an organized effort is always set forth to provide meals, clothing, financial support, emotional support, and other necessities to those hurting or in need. And you hear of instances of individuals “paying it forward” all the time. Such as when an anonymous person pays for the coffee belonging to someone behind them in line at the Starbucks drive-through. Maybe you have at one time or another been on the receiving end of someone else’s generosity. It’s comforting to know that support system exists.

In a recent newspaper article written on those that are homeless here in Lufkin, it mentioned that many who have been arrested or cited for panhandling tell police that they are here and continue to panhandle because “Lufkin is generous and people keep giving.” This is just another way that the community in which we live, work, and play exemplifies the giving spirit time and time again through generosity without the expectation of recognition. Just in Angelina County alone, I am aware of more than ten private foundations that contribute monetary funds to various community projects and organizations on a regular basis to continue to grow our resources and improve our quality of life. And not to mention the many efforts of our local churches when it comes to giving and helping those in need. Of course let’s not forget the positive impact that the Junior League of Lufkin has on this community. Through our fundraising efforts via the Charity Ball and Spring Market, we are able to continue League projects such as the Back to School Bonanza and Career Conference. On an annual basis, the JLL is able to disburse funds to various projects throughout the county, as well as award scholarship money to local students. Our organization is at the very heart of the giving spirit. In fact, that is exactly why the Junior League of Lufkin exists! So my challenge to you is this, take time to put others before yourself. It doesn’t have to be Christmas or any other special occasion to do so. Give back simply for the personal satisfaction of knowing that you have made a difference. There are many ways to “give” to others. And we all have different resources. Giving can take place through your time or perhaps a monetary donation. Both are significant and satisfying. By taking time to do something for someone else, you will experience the true joy and gift of giving!

he very first Charity Ball was held March 19, 1977 at the Lufkin Civic Center benefitting The Lufkin Historial and Creative Arts Center (The Museum of East Texas). The idea for the first Charity Ball was conceived by League members who had attended similiar events in Dallas, Houston and Galveston, according to an article published in the Lufkin News. Attendees of the Ball enjoyed a 16-piece orchestra, dancing, cocktails, a silent and live auction, as well as a midnight breakfast. Five door prizes were given away, including a weekend for four in New Orleans at the Royal Orleans. Auction items included a typewriter, 100 gallons of gasoline, a Fish Fry for 20 couples at the Red Barn and a 5-day stay at a Villa in Acapulco for ten people. The League considered the event a success and donated $20,000 to the Museum, while adding Charity Ball as an official placement.

Sustainer News By Lisa Haglund

ew Year’s Eve is always a night of celebration. This year, in addition to the wonderful Charity Ball hosted by the Junior League, the evening was a popular wedding date. Jayne Ann Wolsey and Blake Deaton, son of Jan and Tommy Deaton, were married on December 31st in Palm Springs, California at the LaQuinta Resort. It was a beautiful, fun New Year’s Eve Wedding. Blake’s brother, Ryan, served as his best man and Blake’s five nieces and nephews were also in the wedding party. Tommy and Jan drove to Palm Springs with their car loaded with all of the Deaton family wedding clothes. They thoroughly enjoyed the road trip and the gorgeous, snowy landscape. While staying at the LaQuinta Resort they even ran into a few Hollywood actors. After a wonderful honeymoon in Belize, Jayne Ann and Blake will make their home in Fort Worth. Hayley Haglund and Eason Davis were also married on December 31. Hayley is the daughter of Vickie and Marty Evans and Wayne and Lisa Haglund.

They married at the Moody Memorial United Methodist Church on Galveston Island. Hayley’s Matron of Honor was her sister, Hilary Haglund Walker and her Maid of Honor was Kristen Marlin. Other attendants with Lufkin roots were sisters, Jacquelyn Block and Jennifer Bell, and Leeanne Friesen Haglund, sister-inlaw. Hunter Haglund, Hayley’s brother, was one of Eason’s groomsmen. Other attendees of the bride and groom represented global friendships with connections to Great Britain, Scotland, Australia, Mexico and Canada! Anders Walker and Preston Haglund, nephews, were ring bearers. The reception was held at The Garten Verein, a Victorian era German dance pavilion that survived The Great 1900 Storm. Wayne’s mother and her sister had attended dances as teenagers there. Hayley and Eason honeymooned in Hawaii and make their home in San Francisco, California.
