Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve... you only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

public. Many, many flyers were produced and sent out with participants in races all over our county and those within driving distance. The morning of March 24th was beautiful and the runners were ready. Many commented that the course was a great challenge with the hilly terrain of Crown Colony. The kids that ran in the 1 Mile race were adorable – and fast! The day was a total success! Crown Colony was exceptional to help with all that they did. They made set up and clean up easy. Placement surveys were completed and collected and Placement worked several long nights to secure spots for each of our members. That job is difficult and can be messy, but they are confident you will be happy with the results are published. Advisory has also met and determined the proposed grant recipients. Those proposed recipients were presented at the April general meeting to be approved at the May general meeting. April 17th was finally here. Accountants rejoice. Enough said. And here we are, about to host Spring Market. By the time you read this article, it will have come and gone as well. The Civic Center construction is well under way and should be completed before our next Spring Market. This expansion will afford us the opportunity to greatly increase our market and hopefully our profit as well. We are excited about the future. Speaking of the future, Career Conference planning is in the final stages, to be hosted on May 10th. If you have never attended this event, I cannot encourage you enough to volunteer to help. It is a fun morning of interacting with the middle school kids. They will definitely add joy to your day, sometimes even unintentionally! The future leadership has been determined and your future Placement has been secured. When wrapping up one year, it is only natural to look forward to the future, especially with this fabulous group of ladies. With the support of First United Methodist Church, we are looking forward to assisting more children this summer at the Back to School Bonanza, under the thoughtful leadership of Susan Harris. Camp-Get Fit/Kids in the Kitchen is set to be another wonderful experience, being led by Monica Gunter. Vision Screening, led by Whitney Garza, will gear up and tackle the challenge of screening all those adorable, wiggly kids! Family Nights leaders, including Jeanie McCusker and Amber Youngblood, have put thoughtful consideration into making that project even more impactful. Becky Cota will lead the Middle School Volunteers in some awesome projects. Spring Market leaders, Melissa Roberts, and Amanda Morales, have many great ideas to increase traffic and profit for next year. Renee Robertson and the Fun Run committee are excited about our sophomore year and have thoughts of expansion playing in their heads. Career Conference is in the capable hands of Crystal Gann and we also have research going on to bring the “next big thing” in fundraising to our League. In the midst of all that is happening, your Board, led by incoming President, Marcy Weibe will be guiding the League in its endeavors. Pay attention, step up and get involved, because “what if” you don’t and you miss something?! I hope you all have a wonderful summer and I thank you for the opportunity to have been your leader this year. You have made me so proud to be a part of this League and this community!

xpanding on the theme for the year, “What if I wake up and the year has already flown by?” That is where we stand now. It may not seem that way to you, but standing behind the podium, it definitely has!    We started off with a glorious summer, and after attending the Annual Conference in Philadelphia, the board got together to put forth a proposal to host our first fun run. You, as a League, accepted this proposal and our wonderful League Secretary, Julianne Greak, accepted the additional responsibility of planning the event. We then hosted our first annual Back to School Bonanza. This was actually the end of the previous League year, but I would be remiss in not mentioning that amazing day! We started off bright and early, and after months of planning we were able to service the needs of so many children in our area. It was a huge success and paved the road as a signature project for our League. Also held during the summer was Camp-Get-Fit/Kids in the Kitchen. This week-long event was a great time for kids to learn the importance of exercise and good nutrition. I believe the volunteers had just as much fun as the kids! We moved from the summer to the kick off of our League year. Plans for the New Year’s Eve Ball were running fast and furious in September. We all looked forward to a spectacular time with the New Year’s Eve in the City theme. Vision Screening began with a labor intensive schedule to screen all the children in our school district and with plans to possibly add more in the future. The MVP committee pulled together their awesome middle school kids to promote volunteerism at that age. They worked on several worthwhile projects during the year, including assisting at the animal shelter. The Family Fun Night committee met and planned three Family Night dates and began to coordinate with the various schools on what best to serve and present. The Spring Market committee was also working on the April event, including securing the Civic Center and coordinating with the city on the construction aspect. After voting in our 10-11 Provisional Class in September, we got to meet our 11-12 Provisional Class at the October General Meeting. They are a diverse group of ladies with some spectacular personalities and major potential for leadership. We are so excited to have them become an active part of our League. Autumn came and went with all our volunteers working hard to achieve success in our various projects and fundraisers. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas flew by! All of a sudden it was New Year’s Eve in the City! The committee put on a fabulous event! The change of venue to Crown Colony was a great decision and brought in people who had not attended in a number of years. The band was awesome, the food was really good and the night was so much fun! We hosted the always entertaining Cottage Meetings in January with the PJ’s and Pearls theme. Members discussed various topics, including an in-depth discussion about continuing our cherished Charity Ball fundraiser. The board met shortly thereafter with Lora Huerta, the immediate past Chair of the Charity Ball and Tara Watkins, the immediate future Chair of Billie Jean Johnson, LVN Billie Jean Johnson, LVN Administrator/Owner the Charity Ball. After much discussion, the heart-wrenching decision to Administrator/Owner propose terminating this fundraiser was made. This was proposed and voted on by the League at large and passed by a large margin. It was a bittersweet end to this fundraiser. It was sad to say goodbye the tradition, but a hopeful opening to a future of new possibilities. Once we released this information to 4000 S. April Volunteer of the Month

Michelle Haney

Many thanks to Karen Ronaghan, Mary Ridings and Jeanie McCusker for their extra help with the Spring into Spring Fun Run. They each deserve a Pat on the Back for April!

Compassion, heart and dedication…that’s what makes a great volunteer…and are three words that describe our Volunteer of the Month. Michelle Haney is always on the go with her family and with various volunteer responsibilities in the community, but is willing to offer an extra hand and find the time to help out someone in need. Outside of her league duties she is a very busy, busy woman. In fact, her husband describes her as a serial volunteer for all causes. She serves on the Board for the Mosaic Center, volunteered for the Bayou Bash Auction Display, volunteers every Tuesday for Brandon HOSTS, and has been a substitute teacher at her daughter’s school. Michelle is a graduate of the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and is a faithful member of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church. She has been married for 8 wonderful years and is an extraordinaire stay at home mom to two beautiful little girls. Her friends and family have described her as having a very sweet, calming nature about her. She is intelligent, dependable, loyal and a great listener. She takes the time for others and is genuinely concerned about other people’s needs. Because of your compassion, heart and dedication, we congratulate you, Michelle Haney, Volunteer of the Month.

Spring Market Wrap-Up By Kim Herman, Spring Market Chair

A

nother Spring Market has come to an end with this year’s theme bringing new meaning to my life.   Live. I never imagined that the Civic Center would become my home for four days. All the employees worked diligently to make sure we had everything we needed from set up to take down.   Laugh. Everywhere I looked, shoppers and vendors were busy laughing and having a great time. There were a few minor issues but nothing that could not be fixed. Love. As a provisional, I had always wanted to chair Spring Market. Three years later, I did it. I didn’t do it for the recognition. I had seen markets before that were led by great leaders and I wanted to follow in their foot steps. So thank you past chairs for being my role models!! However, if I could have stayed as vendor relations chair, I would have never chaired because I LOVE our vendors!! SHOPPING! Saturday morning, I announced to vendors at 9:50 a.m. that we had customers waiting and that I was letting them in. There was a steady flow of shoppers from Pre-Party on Thursday until the last customer came in at 4:40pm on Saturday. Although it hailed and rained Friday, it did not make a huge impact on those coming out to the market. Two lucky shoppers (and league members) won prizes. Sustainer Lisa Flournoy was the winner of the fabulous Louis Vuitton purse and Active Mendi Brent won the Pandora Bracelet set donated by Cavanaugh’s Jewelers. At this year’s Girls Night Out! Pre-Party we drew for two $100 gift certificates and Sustainer Ginger Bates won one of them. However, it was not just league members that won door prizes. There were several locals that won. THANK YOU!! I can not say thank you enough. From the committee, sub-committee, provisionals and all others who worked a shift or two. It meant so much to see all of you supporting Spring Market. If you didn’t work, you were there shopping and vendors LOVE shoppers!!! Melissa and Tracie did a great job with vendors. We had a slow start but it all came together with a final 52 vendors. Melissa had a little more hands-on as co-chair, so she knows the areas that can be improved or not. Keela Morgan took very good care of our vendors. They commented that they are not taken care of this well even at the larger markets. So once again, this is something to be proud of ladies. SFA catered the pre-party and the food was delicious. Thanks to Rebecca Brightwell for creating our signature drink…Peach Bellini. (I am now addicted.) Dragon Fly from Nacogdoches loaned us plants and she returned the ones we were not able to sell. I really loved Samie’s ticket bar. It was a twist from the ordinary tables used in the past. Rebecca and Samie worked together to bring the theme to life. I wanted a ‘Spring’ event with vibrant colors and they delivered. Thank you!! K-Fox 95.5 was there on Saturday doing a live radio broadcast. Although I didn’t hear it, Dan Patrick gave out shirts to those who came by. Thank you Karen Ronaghan for being publicity chair. At first you doubted that you could do it, but at the end, you did it!! You worked to stay within budget but after KETK offered to run a commercial for us, well, we had to make sacrifices. Helping Hands Sponsor Brookshire Brothers catered the luncheon. Susan Harris, with the help of Sustainer Angie Roper, kept the kitchen under control. If these ladies are not worried about something, then I knew I shouldn’t. They have ‘been there, done that, and got the shirt.’ The luncheon was very appetizing and the dessert was to die for. Speaking of sustainers, Lisa Griffin did a great job promoting

6 May 2012

every vendor we had in the market in the style show. AC Pom Squad, Sustainers and children of actives and sustainers served as models. I really liked the floor models and how some of the vendors

interacted during the show. She will admit the first show was a little long but she pulled it together for the second one. Thank you Lisa!!! You are a doll!! Mary Jane West…what can I say? She recruited sustainers to work the ticket bar for Friday and Saturday. She also had several help with the luncheons. MJ has done a fantastic job as sustainer rep by keeping them informed on what we are doing and then giving us feedback. After a few phone calls (it pays to have friends in high places), she let us know that only one street would be closed for the parade and that all entrances into the civic center should be opened. Ticket Queen- Michelle Combs did it again!! She is the most organized person I know. She kept track of ticket sales for 2 hour shifts so we could compare Friday to Saturday. Speaking of Michelle…thanks to Michelle Haney and last year’s chair Cindy Neal who taped down all the cords so vendors could have electricity in their booths. It took everyone on the committee to put this market together. There is not an “I” in team but I am very honored and humbled to have the opportunity to work with each of them. I hope that future markets will continue to grow and improve so we can provide more projects to the women and children in our community. I will miss being part of the committee but look forward to what my future in the league has for me. May God Bless,

Kim Herman

That Volunteer Spirit By Kathi White

s I (and 12 other League friends) move giving. We work our way to that perfect fit that melds our personal and from Active to Sustainer status with JLL, benevolent lives. and from large scale volunteering in the JLL gives women an opportunity to shine brightly, but more community, I want you to be encouraged and I importantly, to shed light on the needs of women and children in our congratulate all of you ladies for exhibiting that midst. It allows us to open our hearts and minds to them in ways that we might otherwise never imagine. It gives us the privilege to serve. It volunteer spirit. I write this article while sitting in a booth at has given me hope, purpose and understanding of the big “Why” of McDonald’s, taking a break from driving in the pouring rain returning volunteering. My hope is that each of you will continue to work the mission and from a business trip to Houston. This after spending the day before at an agency banquet and a few hours working at the Spring Market allow your curiosity to be piqued. Be bold and purposefully accept the Pre-Party before rolling out of bed at 4:30 a.m. to make the drive to challenge to take advantage of the opportunities afforded through JLL. Houston. Of course my mind is consumed with the return trip and the Understand that if you want to be a leader, then choose the path and many reasons I need to get back home – both personal and altruistic. LEAD; if you want to work in the background, then WORK. As we I’m praying that my meeting ends before the 3 p.m. onslaught of Friday move over to Sustainer, we make room for you to spread your wings traffic so I can make it back to my son’s 6 o’clock baseball game and and soar ever so high. I see the glimpses of hope in your eyes and that take over the concession stand (yes, I even volunteered to be concessions volunteer spirit in your hearts and I wish you well. Losing my Mother recently has reminded me that when life gives coordinator for Lufkin Panther Baseball). After which I still had to re-think, type and submit this article and try to squeeze in at least a us precious moments – we must take them. So I step away to fulfill the few hours of sleep before an early rise Saturday to work the CASA promise I made to my 17-year-old son a couple of years ago that during Superhero 5K and the Downtown Hoedown before scooting over to his senior year I would put him at the top of all of my lists. The time is Spring Market to buy that purple dress that I couldn’t quite settle on a fast approaching for us to tackle his senior year – together. Thanks for the precious moments. Be blessed! couple of days earlier. So what does this have to do with motivating you? Well, as volunteers we are consumed with helping others. As women, we feel responsible for ensuring that our families, friends, neighbors and anyone else in our space are cared for and happy. What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? Brandon HOSTS because I was helping a child read that truly appreciated the help. Please give some advice for new members to the League. Being committed because that is what JLL is all about: giving back to the community unselfishly. Where will you continue to volunteer? Anywhere and anytime I can help. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. I would say our Provisional year when we did the ROPES course because it was a bonding and encouraging time to get through the obstacles and that same attitude was shown throughout the League. Even though you may be over a placement and in charge, if a problem or “crisis” arose everybody within the League would lend a hand to help to get you through and boy did they help me!!!! It’s like a big family.

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? My favorite placement was MVP because I love working with children. Please give some advice for new members of the League. I would advise getting in at the age of 35-40. Will you continue to volunteer? Yes. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. Hands down, my funniest experience would have to be when I called my husband to take me to the hospital after breaking my leg at the ROPES course and listening to him tell me I should have called an ambulance so we could have gotten there faster.

Suzy Jungman What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? My favorite placement was Art Camp. I loved working with the young kids…many times I was their work of art!!! Please give some advice for new members to the League. Remember that all the work you do is appreciated so much by the children of our community. Where will you continue to volunteer? My goal is to continue to help with Career Conference at LMS. I am also going to join the Aggie Mom’s club this summer. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. My favorite memory is my first placement at Art Camp. I came home wearing more paint than the canvas.

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? My favorite placement was the Middle School Volunteer Program. I enjoyed MVP because of my direct involvement with middle school students. Please give some advice for new members to the League. Enjoy every moment your league time and take advantage of the opportunities to grow. You may be a little uncomfortable sometimes, but this is a great way to find out new information about yourself. Where will you continue to volunteer? I will volunteer at First United Methodist Church. I want to enjoy the next few years with my daughter before she leaves for college. I plan on volunteering at Lufkin High School and with the Panther Pride as needed. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. When I was chairperson for the Middle School Volunteer Program, it was a pleasure to take the students, including my daughter Kassidy, to sing Christmas carols at Parkwood Place. I didn’t know that I would get a chance to say goodbye to my high school friend Jackie Edwards Johnson.

Karen Harris

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? I enjoyed the Middle School Volunteer Program because I enjoyed watching the middle school youth learn about ways they can volunteer in their community. They can make a difference now and do not have to wait until they are adults. I also loved Vision Screening because this really helps our school nurses and we make a difference in our community by helping the children. Please give some advice for new members to the League. Enjoy your time in the League and the friendships you will make. Volunteer with your whole heart and enjoy helping others. You will be blessed for the time you give. Where will you continue to volunteer? I would like to continue to help with Vision Screening and Back to School Bonanza. I will also continue to volunteer at Lufkin Middle School, CISC Backpack Buddies, and with the youth at my church. I am always open to new areas where I can help others. What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? Hospitality Chair. It kept me involved and in touch with the members. Don’t get me wrong, it was a lot of work – hard work, but fun overall. Please give some advice for new members

to the League. Live, Laugh, Learn! Do the required work, but remember to enjoy the ladies and have fun. Where will you continue to volunteer? I will continue to be involved with varying boards and organizations across the county – United Way, CASA, Main Street, etc. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. There are bound to be many. I recall the provisional year skit for sustainers when I played Tina Turner and wore an awful blonde wig. It was so embarassing doing that dance, but it was fun. Oh and I really enjoyed the year we all bought Christmas gifts for the children of Azleway. Priceless!!!

Paula Scherry What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? I’ve had a few ‘favorites.’ I probably enjoyed Art Camp the best, as I was able to spend time with the children & really get to know them. Please give some advice for new members to the League. Get to know the other members...the friendships created during my time in league mean the world to me. Where will you continue to volunteer? Does my grandson’s house count? Lol.... I’m sure that being a grandmother will be my top priority for a while! Although volunteering with Cattle Barons & CASA are on my list. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. That can’t be publicized. I’ve had many good memories, but I can’t think of a favorite at this time.

Shelli Ellis

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? I have enjoyed each placement I have been involved in, but my favorite, hands down, was working on the Back to School Bonanza. A smile is worth a thousand words and we were able to put a smile on almost 1,400 children’s faces that day! It was priceless… Please give some advice for new members to the League. My advice would simply be to “get involved”. I found my JLL experience much more rewarding when I was involved in the various activities. Whether reading a book to a child at Brandon HOSTS, working at the “bank” for Career Conference or helping with Vision Screening …each task has been rewarding. Where will you continue to volunteer? I will continue volunteering through our church, our three kids’ school activities, as well as within the community and within the League. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. My favorite memories are those spent serving on the JLL Board and what a great group of ladies I was able to serve with! I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 8 years and have been blessed to make lifelong friendships too.

Sustainers in the Spotlight Natalie Thornton

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? Charity Ball Chair. Even though it was very difficult, I grew as a person through it and made some dear friends. Please give some advice for new members to the League. Focus on your own placement and do it well. Where will you continue to volunteer? At my church, Junior Achievement and the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. The Christmas party at Morrison Supply. It was so much fun and very memorable.

Paula Werner

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? Brandon HOSTS because the children were so sweet. Please give some advice for new members to the League. Always remember why you are in the League. Sometimes we forget our purpose in the League. We do a lot of great things for children and single moms. Where will you continue to volunteer? I will continue to volunteer in the community and probably with the Fun Run. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. My favorite memory is when I was doing Brandon HOSTS. One of the little girls that I was tutoring brought me a Christmas gift!!! It was so thoughtful.

Angela Marcotte

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? Camp Get Fit. I liked working with the kids and learning healthy snacks. Please give some advice for new members to the League. Don’t cry about anything that can’t cry for you. Where will you continue to volunteer? Yes, I will continue to volunteer. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. I can’t tell what my funniest memory is because it would hurt feelings. LOL!

Rhonda Jones

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? Brandon HOSTS. Knowing that we were helping the kids and that they were so appreciative. Please give some advice for new members to the League. Get involved as you can. Where will you continue to volunteer? Anywhere needed if I can. Please share a favorite or humorous memory from your service time. The ROPES course during my provisional year.

Words of Gratitude By Kim Herman, Spring Market Chair

I

remember my pastor’s wife saying I needed to be on the TV special on Channel 9 called Power of Prayer after my car accident. As May 17th approaches, I am reminded of how far I have come since that day seven years ago. When people ask me what is the day that changed my life, I reply “It should be the day I was saved and baptized, but it is May 17, 2005.” It is because I have been saved by the grace of God that I am alive. He is not finished with me. That was the question I asked myself so many times after that day. See, I was driving my mother to Tyler to find out is she had cancer or not. We never made it. Before 6 a.m. that early Tuesday morning, two family’s lives were changed. A few weeks ago while at the State FCCLA conference, the guest speaker who is a survivor of a drunk driving accident, explained what shock was and why you go through it in times of sorrow and loss. A complete stranger was able to answer the question I have asked myself for so long that counselors and doctors could not. I only remember leaving my parent’s house, then seeing headlights come over the hill on 69, followed by a lady’s voice asking me who else was in the van. Until this day, I still do not know who she was. In a way, she is my guardian angel. My mom and I had been arguing a few weeks before and had just reconciled. I remembered while in the E.R. someone asking if there were any fatalities and then hearing ‘2.’ While laying flat on my back, I told the nurse, “I can’t take pain” but once again, shock had a way of shielding me from all the pain I was actually suffering. I had 2 broken ribs on my left, 4 on the right, both lungs had collapsed, a fractured pelvic bone and lacerines to my spleen but the major damage was to my right ankle. The impact had crushed the heel and rolled it under. The surgeon in Lufkin said he could not do anything to it and that he was going to have to amputate. Luckily for me, I was life flighted to Houston where a 4-6 hour surgery only took 3 hours. I vaguely remember hearing certain church members and Brother Burtis, our pastor at the time, praying around me before I was put in the helicopter. For me to deal with things, I would close my eyes. For several days and too many tests later, I thought I was in a nightmare and all I wanted to do was wake up. When I would come to, I would ask for my mom. She was always there when I needed her. She

was beside me when I got married, had both my kids, so she should be there now. My husband would tell me she’s not here yet. I know it had to be hard on him to tell that she didn’t make it because he knew how much I loved her. Speaking of love, I know I married the man that would do anything for me. Bryan never left my side the ten days I was in Hermann Hospital. He had to do things for me that I only imagined we would have to do when we got older. He was actually the encourager for me to get better. My sister-in-law kept our kids, who were 4 and 7 at the time. We had never been apart for that long. Before my children were allowed to see me in ICU, they had to be prepared for what mommy would look like from the bruises on my face to all the machines I was hooked up to. The nurses were so loving, caring, and patient. One nurse stands out in my mind because Bryan bragged on her. He said that when I went in for an emergency surgery to remove a blood clot, she sat and cried along with him. Several blood clots had formed and what they thought could be caught with a laser turned out to be the size of a baseball. The thick, ugly scar from the middle of my back to nearly my right breast, serves as a reminder that I am a survivor. Prayers!! After returning home to go through months of physical therapy, I received cards and calls from people that I barely knew. I had people say that their church had added me to their prayer lists, even one had a prayer cloth for me. Regardless of the denomination, they were praying for me, someone they had never met. I am living proof of the power of prayer. My mom and the man who caused the accident, who was driving under the influence of legal and illegal drugs were killed instantly. What would probably cause some to give up, actually made me stronger. God left me here because my children still needed me to be the mom to them that mine was to me. I had a second chance on life. In 2007, I had a judge tell me that I would never return to work. In 2008, I went back to SFA and when I graduated in August 2010, I dedicated that day to my mom because I probably wouldn’t have been able to accomplish that goal had it not been for the accident. It’s strange how things work out. As Mother’s Day nears, please tell your mom how much you love her and thank her for all she has done for you. If you don’t have your mom, honor her memory by letting those around you know what a great woman she was. Happy Mother’s Day, ladies!!! May God Bless each and everyone of you!!

Sustainer News By Lisa Haglund

Y

our Sustainer annual membership dues should be returned to Linda Malnar by May 20, 2012. Regular sustainer dues are $80.00 per year. Emeritus membership dues are $40.00 per year. To qualify as emeritus, a member must have reached the age of 80 on or before June 1, 2013. Please mail your dues to: Linda Malnar, 139CR 722, Nacogdoches, Texas 75965. Jetta Westerholm has given me the good news that grandson, Dr. Joey Koch and his wife, Dr. Rebekah Koch will be moving to Lufkin in July. Joey is a family practice physician and Rebekah is a psychiatrist. They will each be opening a practice here. We are glad to see our medical community grow with such bright young professionals! Lacey Friesen, daughter of Gip and Andrea Friesen and Chase Luce, son of Brig and Veronica Luce, were married on March 17, 2012. That date is now a triple special day in the Friesen household as it is also Gip’s birthday, and Andrea and Gip’s anniversary date. Lacey’s sisters, Leeanne and Laura, were her matron and maid of honor. Bridesmaids from Lufkin were Blaire Booker, Allison Brown Fischer, Kristen Friesen, Julianne Rhodes, Stephanie Sullivan and Jennifer Treadwell. Chase’s best man was Tre’ Luce. Groomsmen from Lufkin were: Kyle Grimes, Hunter Haglund, Chris McClendon, Chris Nicholas, Drew Ormsby, Blake Stewart, Austin Thigpen, Rich Warner and Cane Yeary. In lieu of the usual ring bearer and flower girl walking down the aisle, a wagon full of little ones, Avery Carrifee, Preston Haglund, and Lilly Oldham were pulled by Jack Haisler and Julia Haisler to announce “Here Comes the Bride”. Lacey has received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from TCU. She is working in labor and delivery and in the newborn nursery at Memorial Medical Center. Chase received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance from SFA and works at Texas State Bank.

Sally Alvis, Kim Rowley, Traci Eckman and Karen Gray are the co-chairmen of LHS Project Celebration on May 25. Karen Watson is the treasurer and Jule Fenley is in charge of the Wall of Honor. The Wall of Honor is great way to honor a graduate and contribute financially to the celebration. Also, a general donation to the Wall of Honor would allow the committee to place your name on a Wall donation for a student that does not have one. They want every graduate to have the opportunity to celebrate with their friends in a safe way. Scholarships for the $20.00 ticket will be provided for any student that otherwise cannot afford to attend. Your contributions would be greatly appreciated. To participate by working the event, to donate prizes, gift cards, cash or to honor someone on the Wall of Honor, please contact Sally Alvis, 366-7975, salvis@consolidated.net or Jule Fenley, 366-8000 or Karen Gray, kfgray@yahoo.com. This issue marks the end of another school year and the arrival of summer. I think wherever we are in life, we all stay tied to that school calendar in some way or another. Stay cool, relaxed and try to remember the sweetness of summer as we begin to face the heat!
