Davao food hub

DAVAO City – With the opening of the Davao City Food Terminal Complex (DFTC), vegetable producers and traders from remote districts of the city said they no longer worry about middlemen who buy their products and pay them at very unreasonable prices. In a statement Friday, Joseph Laborte, president of the Highland Vegetable Growers Association (HVGA) from Tugbok district, said the DFTC would help provide small farmers a direct market area to sell their products at competitive prices. ”In our area, our product is only bought for P7 to P8 but here in DFTC, it can be sold for as much as P12,” Laborte said, noting that the absence of middlemen has raised their income considerably.

5 nabbed as smuggled cigars, fuel seized in Zamboanga, Tawi-Tawi

ZAMBOANGA City – Authorities arrested five people and seized more than P8 million worth of illicit goods in anti-smuggling operations here and in the province of Tawi-Tawi, officials said Monday. The contraband consisted of P5,250,000 smuggled cigarettes and P2,800,000 smuggled petroleum products. Zamboanga City police chief Col. Alexander Lorenzo said the P5.2 million worth of smuggled cigarettes were seized around 4 a.m. Sunday in Barangay Sinunuc. Lorenzo said the 150 master cases of cigarettes were seized

after the police received intelligence information on the presence of smuggled cigarettes. No one was arrested as the supposed owner of the contraband, Muhammad Esmali Laudin, was not around when the police officers arrived in the area. Lorenzo said the contraband will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for proper disposition. Meanwhile, Col. Richard Verceles, Area Police Command-Western Mindanao operations chief, said the smuggled petroleum products were seized around 10:30 a.m. Sunday in

The barge was found to be loaded with 10,000 liters of diesel with P400,000 and 60,000 liters of gasoline with P2.4 million. Authorities nabbed the crew identified as Rome Anung Jr., 45; Zulkifli Bin Baksing, 45; Zulfendy Bin Salim, 21; Zulkifle Bin Akim, 20; and Mohd Shahrulaffandi Bin Yahaya, 36. (PNA)

Research Writing among Teachers

The Department of Education issued Order No. 39, s. Adoption of the Basic Education Research Agenda in 2016 to guide DepEd and its stakeholders in conducting education research and utilizing research findings.

The Order presented four study agendas for the teacher to choose from: government, human resource development, child protection, and teaching and learning. There are four more themes to choose from:

inclusive education, gender and development, disaster risk reduction, and management (DRRM).

Given the directive, the teachers are tasked with conducting research. Teachers' responsibilities have expanded from being solely focused on teaching students to becoming teacher-researchers. Teachers are now required to conduct research in order to address issues encountered in the classroom and possibly consider and design interventions to address the quandary.

Teachers are now faced with the challenge of writing research when they believe they lack the necessary knowledge and skills. They also lack the time to write because they are already overburdened with work.

To address the teachers' concerns, the school administrators, as the teachers' direct superiors, are now faced with the same dilemma of what to do to assist the teachers with the new task assigned to them. The benefits of research writing must be communicated to teachers by school administrators. Teachers must be informed that the Basic Education Research Fund provides research incentives to teachers undergoing research (DepEd Order No. 24, s. 2010). They would receive a Certificate of Completion (COC) after completing their research study, which they could use to strengthen their application for promotions.

Truly, there are advantages for teacher-researchers. Some of it includes research incentives, COC for advancement, and the belief that they can solve their own problems. Despite the fact that it is difficult, it can help them improve their educational practices and contribute significantly to the attainment of quality education for Filipino students.

Xavier Ateneo embraces the future with its new Masterson and El Gaucho campuses

Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan takes a big step forward into the future as it prepares for the construction on January 2023 of its new campus in Manresa, Upper Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City called the Masterson Campus, and the development of the El Gaucho in Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City as the new farm laboratory site of the College of Agriculture.

As a response to the fast-changing needs of the academic community and of Mindanao as a whole, XU is expanding its learning spaces into the 21-hectare Manresa campus with innovations in the teaching-learning programs, infrastructure, and facility. The Campus of the Future provides a venue for XU to carry on its Jesuit education of excellence and produce graduates who have the skills fitted for the 21st century. It aims to reinvent Xavier Ateneo as a more socially relevant and inclusive learning institution focused on strengthening its colleges and schools such as Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business and Management, Computer Studies, Education, Engineering, Nursing, and Medicine.

The new campus is bent on providing state-ofthe-art infrastructure and facilities that will address not only the requirements of the academe but also that of the environment. Hence, the new site will have eco-friendly

landscapes and buildings, green areas, wide roads, dedicated bike lanes, campuswide wireless connectivity, and healthy and adaptable learning facilities for virtual and physical classes. It will also ensure the preservation of the 25 hectares of the surrounding forest areas, which will also serve as a sanctuary for animal and plant species. Adjacent to the campus is the Manresa Town which will provide students and employees with generous open spaces, convenient and safe residential options, and easy access to commercial establishments and futureready offices. The whole project is set to be completed in time for the centennial of XU in 2033.

Meantime, the new Agriculture campus at El Gaucho which spans 64 hectares will serve as an instructional, research, and development hub, showcasing technologies that will develop the skills and expertise of students in the areas of Crop Science, Animal Science, Agriculture and Biosystems

Engineering, Food Technology, Agribusiness, and Development communications. Recognized as CHEDs Center of Excellence in Agriculture Education in 2016, the College through its new and expansive farm lab, will be able to offer a more strategic venue to showcase food production, processing, and Agri systems technologies. It will also allow the conduct of relevant researches and provide avenues for training and community development. Cognizant of the important role of

Agriculture in the economy and the environment, El Gaucho aims to produce leaders molded by Jesuit education who will help address issues on food security and climate change, and who will advance the agricultural sector not only in Mindanao and the country but in the entire ASEAN as well.

Both campuses, which will be developed in phases, serve as an impetus to the future of Cagayan de Oro City and the region of Mindanao. These developments are surely what the city and the entire of Mindanao should be watching out for. (Communication and Promotions Office/ Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan)

Overcoming Obstacles

Think a minute… Jesse Owens was a world-class athlete in track and field in the 1930’s. He was told that because he was a black, African American, there was no way he could win against the white Nazi German athletes at the world Olympics in 1936.

That year the Olympics were held in Berlin, Germany. Adolf Hitler, the Nazi dictator, refused to even look at the African American athletes. The white German athletes were praised and cheered on the field, while Jesse Owens and the other American athletes were insulted and ignored. Yet Jesse did not let Hitler’s cruel prejudice intimidate or stop him. In fact, he was determined more than ever to reach his goal of doing his best. “One of the great joys in life is doing what people say you can’t.”

Jesse made mistakes in his first two long jumps, but he did not let that discourage him. Then, on his last jump, Jesse won! He went on to win all three other events in which he competed. So Jesse Owens came home to America with a record four Olympic Gold Medals!

A Japanese proverb says: “If you fall down seven times, stand up eight times.” We all fail and fall down. That’s OK. But to stay down and not try to get up again, that is sad

factions in the Middle East. War, after-all, is good busi ness whose stocks of powerful weapons can kill the people of the world forty times over. When the ISIS brothers who were then scholars taking PhD in Harvard University knew such truism, they went back to Iraq and formed the Isis combatants describing the US as an “evil empire.”

from farming i.e., fertilizer and chemical dealers, except the farmers.

and serious because you give up hope. Remember: “We all fail—at least the best of us who are brave enough to try something new.” So just because you may lose sometimes does not mean you are a loser. The famous inventor Thomas Edison said: “Many people who failed in life did not know how close they were to success when they stopped trying.”

When challenges come your way, including when you fail, you still have the choice to keep going and reach your goal. “What you do with a great opportunity depends on what you already are; and what you already are depends on your years of daily choices.”

This is why we need Jesus to develop in each of us His inner strength and perseverance that is greater than any obstacle

In the ‘90’s, a popular candi date for the U.S. presidency coined a campaign cliché which clicked with the voters that catapulted him to the presidency. “It’s the economy stupid!,” a simple hash tag reverberated through-out the land that somehow convinced the voters that what really mat tered then was the economy and all the nitty-gritty of economic development, i.e., employment, income, infra structure and what have you, and discussing other issues was just plain stupidity.

Yes, that kind of mindset thrives well in a country that has to perpetuate its stran glehold of economic power in the world whose top eight billionaires have consolidated wealth which is equivalent to the total combined assets of 3.6 billion people on earth or half of the world’s popu lation (based on an Oxfam Study). With economic power goes with it military might. I wasn’t surprised when I got an information that there was a time in recent history when the U.S. was the one supplying armaments to two warring

Yes, it’s the economy, stu pid! Could this be the mindset of US corporations that have dumped excess production of milk and wheat to the sea every time there is over production so as not to affect the law of supply and demand? I’ve read this in a Canadian Library when I visited my sister teaching in the University of Western Ontario in the ‘90s.

I was not even surprised upon knowing that a US Trans-National Corpora tion, Monsanto, was the one which supplied the US military with “yellow rain” which was used against the Vietnamese guerillas during the Vietnam war. “Yellow rain” was the term used to toxic chemicals poured-out like rains to kill the forests where the guerillas were hiding. The more I was not surprised when I knew that it is Monsanto that invented the genetically-modified or ganisms (GMOs) that have replaced our endemic natural crops (i.e., rice, corn, etc.) to so-called High Yielding Varieties (HYVs) which are subservient to the use of toxic chemicals that have already contaminated our water tables. Yes, everyone has profited

Today, let us reflect deeply on the implication of that mindset that what is impor tant is the economy. That money must be used to make more money is a flawed para digm which is based on the growth-at-all-cost develop ment strategy, also known as the Neo-Liberal Capitalism. That growth-centered para digm may have improved the economy but at the expense of the people and the environ ment.

The truth is, that paradigm is now being debunked world wide especially by concerned citizens in the US who are initiating a world-shift. Even His Holiness, Pope Francis, in his latest Encyclical, Lau datu Si’, has questioned that money-must-grow principle. Yes money must be used not to make more money but to enhance the quality of life of the people.

In fact, no less than the United Nations has issued the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to stop poverty, stop social injustices and inequi ties, protect the environment, etc. underscoring the impor tance of the cooperatives to be transformative for people, planet, prosperity and peace.

It is not the economy, anymore but the environment that is of utmost importance. The truth is, in the absence of a major change, the global system will collapse in less than one hundred years be cause of the unsustainability

in the economy where only a few oligarchs are in control and the unsustainability in the ecology. Yes, global warming, melting of the iceberg, the extinction of the species, the rising of the oceans and the depletion of the ozone layer are concrete proof and evi dence that we are now facing our own extinction.

Don’t you know that for every one Celsius increase in global temperature, there will be a corresponding 10% reduction in food produc tion. As the earth warms, the insects’ bites will become more fatal and can reach high altitude. It has been forecasted by scientists that in the next 50 years, earth will increase its temperature that will em power the insects to reach very high altitude. Example, the inhabitants of Bhopal must leave their country for reason of pestilence to seek refuge in Nepal but Nepal during that time will already be under water.

Yes, the environment must now take precedence over the economy that promotes so much consumerism and un bridled materialism otherwise famine, pestilence, war and death as biblically revealed by John will be the order of the day. Our Indigenous People are in fact correct when they said, “ANG KI NAIYAHAN DILI LAMANG TINUBDAN SA KINABUHI KUNG DILI MAO GAYUD ANG KINABUHI!”

Yes, it is not the economy but the environment, stupid!

A merger to remember

Up to the very last min utes of the BPI board meeting last Septem ber 21, Project Disney had been a very closely guarded secret. In an executive session, BPI President and CEO TG Limcaoco, disclosed for the first time to the board a transaction that the BPI team, led by EVP John-C Syquia and BPI Cap President Rhoda Huang, had been working on.

The terms and condi tions of Project Disney have yet to be finalized, Limcaoco said, but if things do not miscarry he will come back to the board, to seek formal approval to do the transaction. In an off cycle board meet ing, held September 30, the BPI board did approve the term sheet of Project Disney.

Project Disney in volves BPI’s acquisition via merger of Robinsons Bank of the Gokongwei group. BPI will offer 6 percent of its shares in exchange for 100 per

cent of Robinsons Bank. Excluded from the deal is Robinsons interest in an insurance broker age. Three months after close, the Gokongwei group will buy an ad ditional .25 percent of BPI shares, to meet the minimum cut of 6.25 percent needed to qualify the Gokongwei group for one seat in the BPI board. Lance Gokongwei, president and CEO of JG Sum mit which owns Rob insons Bank, intimated to Limcaoco that their group would be willing to eventually go to as high as ten percent. Basically, the Gokon gwei Group intends to use BPI as part of the former’s financial network. Meantime, Lance Gokongwei will be invited to sit in BPI’s advisory council.

BPI and Robinsons Bank are now in the process of obtaining regulatory approv als from the BSP, the SEC and the Philippine Competition Commis

sion and their respec tive shareholders. The merger is expected to be completed within 2023.

Market analyst reac tion had been very posi tive : “very exciting”, “a win for both parties”, “perfect alignment of interest”. Fitch unit de scribes BPI-Robinsons deal as “credit positive for the merged lender”.

The merger of the two entities will boost the standing of BPI from No. 3 to No. 2, in terms of deposits, Limcaoco said. But more than the bank ing numbers, the two parties will benefit via mutual access of each other’s ecosystems.

Gokongwei said:“Banking is a scale game and will continue to require additional capital for growth. We believe that merging Robinsons Bank with BPI, which is one of the strongest and most profitable banks in the country, is the best path forward. This will give

our customers access to a fuller range of bank ing products and ser vices as the combined organization will lever age on ecosystems of both the Gokongwei and Ayala Groups.”

BPI Chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala says the merger gives BPI complete access to Gokongwei group and their whole ecosystem - SMEs, their suppli ers, their customers. BPI will be “spread ing our wings a little bit more within the Chinese community that has been a little further away from BPI’s traditional banking business.”

Indeed, a lot has changed since then and the things we used to do may no longer be allowed or viable. That is why in order to respond to the rigors in life in times of covid, we need to find ways in order to bring our selves or our school in an advantageous position.

2022

BWM: Oct. 26,

“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to defeat. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat,” Sun Tzu. The ability to combine strategy and tactics are essential to navigate the pandemic especially that we are dealing with the unseen enemy which is the ever-mutating virus and whether we like it or not it is real and deadly. As a school head, I can not afford to put everyone—teachers, parents and learners at risk due to poor decisionmaking. I also cannot afford to stall or provide haphazard education. I must think of ways on how to deliver quality education that is accessible to all our learners. I need to think clear and fast using some strategies and tactics to our advantage at all costs!

For this school year, we as a community have decided to offer bichronous (synchronous and asynchronous) modality. This was after we have assessed our capacity in terms of internet connections, devices availability, teachers’ competence in the use of technology and navigating the online platforms, and students and parents’ capacity to enroll under this modality and how we can provide technical assistance and address all their needs in order to meet the requirements of remote learning effectively and efficiently. We also provided for digital copies of SLM through our school’s repository link. Teachers also provide Weekly Home learning Plans to our learners and parents to guide them of the expected activities and tasks and for monitoring purposes of their accomplishments and progress. For parents whose children have no means to join the synchronous sessions due to zilch internet connections or devices may also avail of printed modules, the only difference is they don’t join to online classes. Hence, access to education is still open and possible.

“Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things.” —Theodore Levitt. According to Dr.

Jesus Miranda that each organization must identify its unique needs to be able to prosper. One way of doing that is to get models that are running and reliable. This time, the use of technology is probably one of the best models in the delivery of learning. Because there is vast information available on the internet, teachers are no longer the sole authority of information but has become the facilitator of knowledge so that this information is translated into learning. Hence, teachers have a very big role to play.

On the other hand, we need to innovate from the last year’s decision of purely self-directed learning modules and TV and Radio-based instructions where real-time interactions are limited or absent between their teachers and among the students. However, for those who opted for printed modules may also communicate with their teachers through SMS or messenger or whichever is available. Moreover, we need to contextualize our approach to online class where we require longer time for kumustahan and discussions on competencies which the learners find difficult.

Further, this idea of adding synchronous modality is patterned

During the 10th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City from Oct. 20 to 21, DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla said the government was putting in place policies that would further develop the local e-vehicle industry.

Lotilla said that aside from the issuance of the CREVI in 2023, the government has released the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the Republic Act 11697, or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA).

after Xavier University where my children in the Junior High School are attending. The same idea is also taken from my experience with my post-graduate schools where we do synchronous and asynchronous classes. These classes still proved as effective and efficient than we had the normal physical set up or face to face because I still learned according to my pace and complied with the requisites. This opportunity with STI has given me deeper idea on how to do monitoring, provide technical assistance, improve assessment, activate linkages and to think and respond appropriately etc.

Lastly, to better strengthen strategic thinking and innovation is we need to establish partnerships for research studies, experimentations, projects, collaborative teachinglearning and bench marking. There is no silver bullet to answer our current situation which is volatile and fastchanging. We need other school heads or partners for bench marking and seek for coaching, mentoring and technical assistance. The constant desire to be unique yet effective, contextualized yet precise are some of the keys to attain value proposition or what differentiate us from the rest of other schools is still a work in progress.

is celebrated on the third day coinciding with the darkest night of the lunar month.

Depending on the region, celebrations include prayers before one or more Hindu deities, the most common being Lakshmi.

According to David Kinsley, an Indologist and scholar of Indian religious traditions particularly in relation to goddess worship, Lakshmi symbolizes three virtues: wealth and prosperity, fertility and abundant crops, as well as good fortune.

Merchants seek Lakshmi's blessings in their ventures and will ritually close their accounting year during Diwali.

Fertility motifs appear in

agricultural offerings brought before Lakshmi by farming families, who give thanks for the recent harvests and seek her blessings for prosperous future crops.

A symbolic piece of traditional fertilizer, a dried piece of cow dung, is included in the ensemble in Odisha and Deccan region villages, an agricultural motif according to Kinsley. Another aspect of the festival is remembering the ancestors.

Rituals and preparations for Diwali begin days or weeks in advance, typically after the festival of Dusshera that precedes Diwali by about 20 days. The festival formally begins two days before the night of Diwali, and ends

two days thereafter. Each day has the following rituals and significance:

During the festival, Hindus, Jains and Sikhs illuminate their homes, temples and work spaces with diyas, candles and lanterns Hindus, in particular, have a ritual oil bath at dawn on each day of the festival.

Diwali is also marked with fireworks and the decoration of floors with rangoli designs, and other parts of the house with jhalars.

Food is a major focus with families partaking in feasts and sharing mithai.

The festival is an annual homecoming and bonding period not only for families, but also for communities and

This Mindanao-wide Congress is an ideal venue for government policymakers, business leaders, farmers and stakeholders to discuss policy issues and recommend measures to help transform Mindanao agriculture towards a resilient and sustainable foodsecure future. The approved resolutions will be turned over to the President who has been invited to grace the closing plenary on October 28.
