“That will clear your skin, improve renewal and it also helps unblock your pores,” Dr Gunatheesan says.

Dr Gunatheesan suggests using a gentle exfoliating wash, which contains some salicylic acid and lactic acid, at night.

WE LIKE Bondi Sands Aero Self Tanning Foam 1 Hour Express 225ml, $21.99

Easy to use and maintain, faux tan products provide a natural golden glow without the burn. An abundance of formulations ensures there is something to suit every level of expertise.

“If you’re working out in the afternoon or if you’re going for a run along the beach, then you want to make sure that you’re giving your skin a good cleanse afterwards, so you don’t get so much build-up,” Leelah says. “Also make sure you remove sunscreen really well to avoid WA-basedbreakouts.”cosmetic surgeon Vivek Eranki, from Cosmetique cosmetic surgery clinic, says a lot of artificial debris builds up on the skin over summer.

WHAT TO DO In summer, sweating and increased oil production can cause skin inflammation. This means it is still important to maintain a regular cleansing and exfoliating routine.

“Look for a sunscreen that is broad spectrum and offers UVA and UVB protection, and make sure you put sunscreen on at least 15 to 20 minutes before you head out,” says Shyamalar Gunatheesan, dermatologist at Melbourne’s Sinclair Dermatology.

12 The House of Wellness

Make sure you reapply sunscreen throughout the day — aim for a 50c-piece amount at least every four hours.

Moisturiser is key to ensure skin stays hydrated, but you should revisit the type of products you are using, St. Skin co-founder and dermal clinician Leelah Linke says.

“Exfoliation can help get rid of it, so your moisturiser and serum can penetrate into the skin deeper,” Dr Eranki says.

Gold dust

“You don’t need a whole new range, but moisturisers with lighter formulations can be used during the hotter months,” Leelah says.

WHAT TO KEEP A good SPF50+ sunscreen is a must all year round, but particularly in summer as UV damage is responsible for everything from pigmentation to skin ageing.

Dr Gunatheesan says.

WHAT TO ADD Think about including a serum that contains vitamin C and vitamin B to your routine.

SWITCH UP YOUR MAKE-UP

WE LIKE La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Light Sensitive Moisturiser, $35.99; Dr LeWinn’s Eternal Youth Skin Polishing Exfoliant, $25.99; Avene Trixera Nutrition Nutri-fluid Cleanser, $20.99; Healthy Care Collagen + Vitamin C Serum, $39.99; Sukin Rose Hydrating Mist Toner, $10.49

When it comes to serum, Leelah suggests looking for a product containing B group vitamins and also hyaluronic acid, which are both helpful in keeping the skin hydrated.

Overexposure to airconditioning can be very dehydrating for skin. To help combat dryness, try a hydrating mist.

“A gentle spray can lubricate the skin. Then you can also apply a serum or moisturiser, as slightly damp skin is good at absorbing nutrients,” Dr Gunatheesan says.

Given you will be sweating and producing a bit more oil during summer, choose make-up that sits well on the face in these Considerconditions.switching from powder-based cosmetics, which can cause a lot of peeling and tend to “ball” on the skin, to make-up with a creamier, more dewy texture. These active ingredients are great at helping reduce pigmentation, while vitamin C is one of the only things that builds collagen in the skin. “(These actives) will teach your melanocytes how not to overproduce pigment, and also breaks up pigmentation. They’re also antioxidants, so help in repairing cell damage,”

“Try putting sunscreen on a good kabuki brush, and dab and blend it,” she says.

“Using a brush doesn’t destroy your existing make-up and you don’t look all greasy.”

Use an SPF face sunscreen While some moisturisers and cosmetics contain SPF ingredients, Adie recommends including a stand-alone sunblock in your routine. She prefers physical sunscreens because the zinc oxide deflects damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Beauty therapist Adie Robertson, from Sydney’s Wonderland Skin Spa, agrees. “The general rule for best results is thinnest product to the thickest, so you’re ending up with a barrier when you finish,” Adie says. What type of aresunscreenyouusing?

Dermatologist Shyamalar Gunatheesan suggests starting with a clean face followed by serums. “Serums are a lightweight product, they penetrate better so they should be applied first,” Dr Gunatheesan says.

Remember, it is important to top up through the day Dr Gunatheesan says our natural sebum can break down sunscreen and make-up, so reapplying is key. She recommends keeping a tube of tinted physical blocker or tinted chemical sunscreen and brush in your handbag for top-ups.

The next step depends on the kind of sunscreen you are using.

“With a chemicalofsunscreen,chemical-basedthegeneralrulethumbisserum,moisturiser,sunscreenandthenyour make-up,” Dr Gunatheesan says. “With a physical blocker, it’s more of a reflecting agent, so you want to apply it after your“Zinc-basedmake-up. sunscreens are generally the best because they’re anti-infl ammatory and they offer very good sun protection.”

“That way it doesn’t destroy your existing make-up, but it sits as a top layer and gives you that dewy look.”

SPF-infused powders and finishing sprays with SPF are also available.

Dr Gunatheesan says cosmetic brushes can be used to apply sunscreen over make-up without ruining your look.

Adie says chemical sunscreens can be an irritant, so are not good for sensitive skin.

Dr Gunatheesan agrees a standalone sunscreen is essential.

“Because of this, whatever your foundation shade choice is for your skin tone it will most likely not be correct for the dark circle area, you will need to go deeper and warmer in colour,” Michael says. He suggests investing in a concealer that is more peachy for light/fair/pink skin tones or more yellow/orange for deep/warm/ olive skin tones. “The depth of these warmer shades will out-balance the bluish tone of the dark circle to correct the area.”

“Contour/shading is applied under the bone to lift, sculpt and add face definition, while blush adds colour and lift to the front ‘apple’ of the cheek for a slight plumping effect and shouldn’t be applied under the cheekbone at all,” Michael says.

While you may regret an impromptu head shave, chances are you are well prepared to try something different. “If you’ve been thinking about changing your style for a few hair appointments, you’re ready,” Cassandra says

Fashion entrepreneur and mother of two Nadia Bartel started taking breathwork lessons shortly after her relationship ended in late 2019 to help curb anxiety and deal with her emotions.

“It’s just so incredible when you breathe, you let go of negative emotions and you think a lot clearer,” Nadia, 35, says. “It was the best thing I’ve ever done for me.” She says she continued with the lessons right up until she and her boys went into stage four lockdown, at the same time incorporating meditation and taking up running.

“I am actually a really spiritual person and in the past year I have become even more so,” she says, reflecting on the COVID-19 lockdown that saw her confined at home in Melbourne for months on end. York

“They’ve been great. We are such a strong Italian family. Growing up, family was really important to us. We would have big get-togethers with our cousins — it was normal to be at each other’s houses, cooking and having fun. It is what brings you together — food, friends and family — they are the things that always feel stable in your life.”

“I really got into meditation and became more consistent with it. Because I had a lot of time to just be by myself, it really helped.” She also enjoyed spending extra time with her sons, Aston, 5, and Henley, 2, as well as working on her Henne fashion label — and redefining herself.

“It brings out a different part of you which you didn’t think you were possibly capable of — so it’s been good in that respect.

“I was there for eight months and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them,” she says.

“I think when things are hard and you have to juggle you actually realise how much you can do,” Nadia says.

Despite the toll of the past year, Nadia is radiating positivity as she talks excitedly about her futureAsideplans.from her role as the official Melbourne Cup Carnival ambassador, Nadia has been busy working on Henne, which she runs with sister Michelle Ring and friend Laura Broque.

“I feel like the boys connected a lot more because they were spending every day together, and I felt like I connected with them on a deeper level as well.” Family connection is important for Nadia, who moved back in with her parents after her marriage to former AFL star Jimmy Bartel ended.

While style is synonymous with Nadia, who has almost 600,000 Instagram followers, she doesn’t consider herself an influencer. In her eyes, she is just sharing things that she loves.

Nadia says there are further ideas in the pipeline, hinting at some new categories such as undergarments.Whenthesisters started their The Con-nection online store in 2016 showcasing their favourite Australian designers, the goal was to launch their own brand once they had done their research on how and what women bought.

That sharing has since led to Nadia being signed as an ambassador for Maybelline New York, a make-up brand she has used since she was a teenager.

“It‘s a dream working with a brand that I absolutely love,” she says. “I did a YouTube video three years ago telling everybody how much I loved their Fit Me Foundation because it’s just so affordable at under $22, and the quality is insane. I wasn’t working with the brand then — it was just a brand that I really liked. And now I am actually working with them — it’s funny how things work out.”

“I have tried to remain really positive. Just because something bad happens, you shouldn’t become pessimistic about it.”

“It has been so great to see Henne come to life,” Nadia says. “Henne means ‘her’ in Swedish. We are so inspired by Scandinavian fashion — simple but classic pieces. We wanted women to be able to wear Henne with sneakers dropping off the kids at school and then out at the weekend. Whenever we create pieces we always have ‘her’ at the front of our mind.”

The trio, who recently launched a new website and shot a fashion campaign with Victoria’s Secret model Georgia Fowler, are intent on growing their market share with a broader size range and plan to eventually take the brand international.“Wehavetaken a cool new direction with the pieces for Henne,” Nadia says. “Our new releases have a lot more summery, high-end focus. People know us for our ribbing, but we have new fabrications coming out this month.”

“I guess that is how I have fallen into the brand work,” she says. “I think people can see you really love it and that resonates with people. But I was never paid, just sharing.”

Reflecting on how her own make-up look has evolved over the years, Nadia says she has learnt that less is more.

“I used to love really thick, dark eyebrows and I used to go for really smoky, dark eyes,” she says with a laugh. “And a lot of eyeliner and a really overly bronzed look.

Despite her new-found surety, Nadia says she has copped her fair share of nasty comments over the“Ityears.hasbeen a long time for me having criticism from people from when I started dating my expartner and you are thrown into that limelight,” she says.

Since her marriage breakdown, Nadia has also found she has plenty of women asking her for advice.

Despite the difficulties of such a high-profile split, Nadia says she is still open to love.

“In the early days it was hard to deal with, but I think if you have a good family background and good people around you it just doesn’t affect you as much.

Choose the right goals Making value-based goals means choosing those based on what you genuinely want versus something you should do, life coach and Upstairs Coaching founder Alex Kingsmill says. “If there is any ‘should’ lurking, ask yourself how you might tweak the goal to make it something you would actually like or love to do. Or consider ditching it altogether for a goal that is more intrinsically aligned,” Alex says.

36 The House of Wellness Skip instead!doandthisresolutionstheyearthis It’s the same cycle most of us face every January. Make New Year’s resolutions. Get excited. Lose interest. Break New Year’s resolutions. In fact a two-year University of Scranton study found only 19 per cent of people were able to successfully achieve their goals in that time frame. So here’s what to do if you genuinely want to make long-lasting changes.WORDS GOMEZTANIA

Dean suggests creating long-term goals such as buying a house or going on a big trip, and short-term goals such as creating and sticking to a budget.

“Consider the life you want and the life you’re living and then think about what is needed to bridge that gap — there is your goal,” Alex says. If your goal is to change careers, instead of declaring you will change jobs this year, look at what needs to happen in between, she says. This could mean doing a course or talking to people in the industry you want to move into.

HOW TO CREATE (AND KEEP) HABITS

GOOD

It is not “all or nothing” Successfully achieving goals means being adaptable, and also forgiving yourself and moving on if you have veered off course. It is something Flow Athletic director Ben Lucas says is important when it comes to setting goals around fitness.

“Tell yourself you will go three to four days a week, and walk on the other days. If you miss a session, do it on another day.”

Bridge the gap Instead of broad resolutions, think of the new year as a time to home in on your goals.

Charter Finance managing director Dean Perlman says this often starts with prioritising and then managing your goals.

From this you can form a detailed plan that includes multiple steps and milestones, which will make it much more likely that you will be able to achieve that long-term goal.

VISIT HOUSEOFWELLNESS.COM.AU

Break it down Creating sub-goals will allow you to feel progress, which is often a big motivator and confidence booster, Alex says. Also, try to celebrate your achievements along the way and reward yourself for a job well done. Organisation is also key. An area where this works (and is a common New Year’s resolution) is when it comes to finances.

The House of Wellness 37 in focus

Don’t do what you have always done Work on a new approach if you have tried to achieve a particular goal multiple times but it has not gone to plan, Alex says.

Clarify where things have not gone right in the past, then identify resources at your disposal that can help you achieve, and build a strong support network to help make your goals a reality. “Feeling bad about yourself won’t help you get where you want to go. Stop, recognise what went wrong, draw a line and commit to starting afresh,” she says.

Flip your thinking Frame your resolution into a positive by thinking of the things you can do as opposed to those you can’t. When it comes to diet, instead of bold declarations such as “I won’t eat junk food this year”, take a more achievable approach, dietitian and Health and Performance Collective co-founder Chloe McLeod says.

“If there is any ‘should’ lurking, ask yourself how you might tweak the goal to make it something you would actually like or love to do. Or consider ditching it altogether for a goal that is more intrinsically aligned.”

“Think about all the things you can have rather than cutting things out, since when we cut things out it tends to make us crave them even more,” Chloe says. “Think about filling up the majority of your diet with healthy, nutritious foods to fuel your body, and allow yourself to have some of the less nutritious foods occasionally as well. “Aim for practice over perfection,” she advises.

“Make a simple plan and organise your workouts into a schedule that suits your lifestyle. For example, if it is easier for you to train on the way to work, do that. If the morning is better, set it for then,” Ben says.

So, you’ve had a bad day. You spent hours at work dealing with one issue after another, you got stuck in traffic on the way home and now your kids won’t stop fighting over who gets to watch what on TV. And tomorrow is likely to bring more of the same. The last thing you probably feel like doing right now is smiling. But forcing a smile to your lips may be just what you need to do to make the world look a little brighter and to lift your spirits. New research from the University of South Australia has found that, when it comes to smiling, “faking it ’til you make it” may change how you feel about the world around you.

SMILING, EVEN WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT, MAY HELP TO LIFT YOUR SPIRITS WORDS SARAH MARINOS

But using Botox to reduce crows’ feet has the opposite effect because we use the muscles around our eyes when we form a real smile athemusclesparalysingandthosereducesstrengthofsmile.

The House of Wellness 41 in focus

The Happiness Institute psychologist and founder Timothy Sharp agrees that smiling can have a beneficial effect on mood, even if we don’t much feel like smiling.

“Treatment with drugs like Botox prevents the patient from being able to make a particular expression. For example, those treated for frown lines with Botox are not able to frown as strongly. This interrupts the feedback they would normally get from their face and they feel less sad,” Dr Lewis reports.

“But you can’t just stick a pen in your teeth and be happy — you have to try to see positives in your situation and life. Be realistic, but don’t be negative all the time as you will always be frustrated.”

“When you forcefully practice smiling, it stimulates the amygdala — the emotional centre of the brain,” Dr Marmolejo-Ramos says. “So, if you use the muscles in your face as if you were smiling, your brain activates areas that are used when you actually smile and releases neurotransmitters or chemicals associated with happy emotional states.”

Work towards creating a life that is genuinely fulfilling andRemembersatisfying.that we might not feel happy all the time but we will enjoy positive emotions most of the time, Dr Sharp says. “Set and work towards meaningful goals like taking care of your health, building positive relationships and connections and fostering hope and optimism,” he says.

“For a ‘quick fix’, doing something fun or funny or forcing a smile can get the ball rolling and create momentumthenecessarytoenjoymorepositive emotions.”

The Botox effect

Earlier research from the University of Cardiff also found that facial expressions impact how we feel. It found people who used Botox to reduce frown lines were less likely to have negative moods, perhaps because paralysing facial muscles that help us frown makes it harder to form unhappy expressions and so makes it harder to feel sad.

“A ‘fake it ’til you make it’ approach could have more credit than we expect,” he says. “But you can’t just stick a pen in your teeth and be happy — you have to try to see positives in your situation and life. Be realistic, but don’t be negative all the time as you will always be frustrated.”

Positive approach In his research, Dr Marmolejo-Ramos placed a pen between the teeth of people, forcing them to use the “smile” muscles. Placing a pen between the lips uses frowning facial muscles, which does not have the same happy effect on brain chemicals.

It seems that moving our facial muscles to form a smile tricks our mind into being more positive.

“When your muscles say you’re happy, you’re more likely to see the world around you in a positive way,” says Fernando Marmolejo-Ramos, a human and artificial cognition expert at the University of South Australia.

“The expressions that we make on our face affects the emotions we feel; we smile because we are happy but smiling also makes us happy,” the University of Cardiff School of Psychology’s Michael Lewis reports.

“Real, meaningful and lasting happiness needs to be authentic and genuine,” Dr Sharp says. “That being said, the idea of faking it ’til you make it can kickstart real emotions that might then lead to other real changes that could boost real happiness.”

The start of a new school year also brings a new normal to education. Kids can expect continued social distancing, more hand washing and perhaps the wearing of masks for senior students. Sports, activities and assemblies may still be modified, and excursions and camps restricted in some areas due to COVID-19 guidelines. While many children are excited, it may not be as easy for those heading through the school gates for the first time.

Swinburne University of Technology senior lecturer and clinical psychologist Katie Wood says some children may be struggling with uncertainty, which may compound their adjustment in a new school“Theysetting.needto be reassured that the world will go back to a sense of ‘normality’, and that there’s still a reason to be hopeful as things recalibrate,” Dr Wood says. “Parents and teachers will need to help ensure a smooth transition. In some families there’s a lot of hustle and bustle, so check in with how they are going and provide a space for talking about this.”

44 The House of Wellness

“Parents, carers and students should have the opportunity to participate in question and answer sessions with the school leaders, and schools should ensure frequent communication with families via emails, phone calls.”

This will ensure “children feel safe, secure and excited about the new learning opportunities that lie ahead”, Dr Bissaker says.

“Families and carers can support transition by actively talking in positive ways about the changes, for example, the exciting new things they will be able to do,” Dr Bissaker says. She also suggests parents talk with existing and new schools to ensure any specific information about their child — such as special learning needs or anxiety levels — is available.

Primary school Many children starting school in 2021 will have had disrupted preschool or childcare attendance the previous year, which educators say may impact on their readiness forUniversityschool.

“By the second lockdown in Victoria ... many students were desperate to get back to school. They were craving and needing interaction with their peers and broader school community,” she says.

“This will support schools in ensuring personalised transition processes are in place if required,” she says. This may involve meetings with teachers, tailored learning plans and putting in place additional support networks, such as school counsellors. Kids may have met their new teachers online, toured schools virtually and lost touch with friends (and classmates) during remote learning.

But Dr Wood assures parents that, in most cases, children will welcome a new start and a new year.

Dr Bissaker says parents, where possible, should make the most of opportunities for children “to make visits to their new setting so that they become more familiar with the new learning environment, their specific classroom, school uniforms, support people and so forth”.

of Western Sydney Associate Professor Christine Woodrow suggests schools will need careful preparation for the start of the 2021 school year and a variety of support mechanisms to accommodate the missed transition to school programs for many children.   Children from disadvantaged backgrounds may face additional challenges because of their lower participation rates in early childhood learning, she adds. “COVID-19 impacts have further reduced the time and opportunity for these children,” Prof Woodrow says. This is compounded by the fact traditional transition to school programs have struggled to operate in the socially distanced environment and “on-line playgroups are a poor substitute for the real thing”, she says.

Dr Bissaker says even virtual information such as videos and online sessions can be invaluable in “developing familiarities with classroom settings and the school environment in general, and provide opportunities to engage with those people who will be key in the child’s education”. What is a life coach?

Some have been known to sign up clients on contracts worth thousands of dollars but offer little coaching in return.

Business and relationships are not the only realm where coaches are becoming increasingly popular. Many people also struggle to implement regular plans to look after their physical and mental health. The tricky thing for most is making a plan that suits them and sticking to it, which has led to coaches who focus on how to look after mind and body.

andCoachingbusiness

Beware of coaches claiming to be mental health experts, Kate also warns. She says coaches are not psychologists, and anyone battling mental health issues such as depression and anxiety should be seeking help from a trained medical professional.

Life coaching first became mainstream for business people. These days major figures such as Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates say a good life coach was critical for their career. Life coach Shannah Kennedy is well known on the Australian business circuit, with two decades of working with people aiming to ascend the corporate ladder but who do not want to be a slave to their work.

“I work mainly with business owners and executives who need a personal plan to run alongside their career plan,” Shannah says. “Those who want to be successful and feel happy and healthy both personally and professionally work with me to create a whole plan, so neither comes at the cost of the other.”

But these days it is not only executives turning to her for assistance.

Among other things, Katie prescribes exercise and meditation to help her clients but she can also refer them to dietitians and nutritionists to get the right eating plan. She says even simple alterations can be life changing and “a little help can go a long way”.

“We work to create a roadmap, a personal plan that is based on their values and strengths that gives them calm confidence to move forward ... and all of it is built on a platform of mental health and wellbeing to avoid burnout along the way.” comesNothingfor free While coaching may sound like fun, it is also big business.

Charles was introduced to The Fathering Project when a dads’ get-together was announced during a primary school assembly.

“Bruce spent hundreds of hours talking to men at the end of their lives and was struck by what they said,” The Fathering Project chief executive Wayne Bradshaw says.

“It’s easy to get lost in your other roles, but what we do or don’t do as dads has an enormous impact on the happiness and health of our kids,” Wayne says.

“My wife walked out and left me taking the kids, and I guess I was in shock,” Charles says softly, admitting the break-up left him struggling with self-confidence as he fought to retain a connection with his two young children.

The not-for-profit organisation was founded by WA cancer specialist Bruce Robinson in 2013, after many of the doctor’s dying patients told him they regretted not having spent more time with their children.

“When one parent sees the other doing positive things it helps both sides and eases the pressure,” he says. “All the focus is now on these two beautiful kids that we brought into the world, which is how it should be.”

“We know fathers have significant impact on the academic and social and emotional wellbeing of their kids, with that influence lasting well into their adult lives,” Wayne says.

On top of COVID-19, which impacted operations at his eight Edwards and Co. salons nationwide, Jaye was also coming to terms with testing positive for motor neurone disease (MND) genes.

CHASETHETO

“I lost my father and sister within nine months of their initial diagnosis,” Jaye says. “Over the years, it’s taken cousins and many members of my extended family, but the first time I was old enough to understand was when I lost my grandmother to MND.”

“FightMND is Australia’s largest independent MND Foundation, which raises funds for various research projects, in particular drug development projects and clinical trials,” he says. How can people show their support?

“I would love to take the business international,” he says.

“It’s made me live my life the way I want to live it, and to live it unapologetically.

What is motor neurone disease (MND)?

“Essentially, we had to pivot the business, and by doing so we were able to maintain momentum and keep staff motivated,” Jaye says. “While salons were closed, we focused on growing the e-commerce side of the business, which is up 700 per cent from the last year.”

One way the salons changed course was through the online sale of DIY dye kits, which proved popular among the salon’s loyal clientele and newcomers in need of a quick fix for their lockdown locks.

As life and business slowly return to normal across the country, Jaye looks towards the future, with his sights on overseas expansion.

“Approximately 10 per cent of people diagnosed with MND have a genetic form of the disease,” he says. “People with familial MND have the disease due to a mutation in a gene that they carry, which has been passed on.”

“MND is a terminal, aggressive neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells, causing progressive muscle weakness leading to paralysis that gradually reduces a person’s ability to move, speak, eat, swallow and ultimately to breathe”, Andrew says. “There’s no known cure, and the average life expectancy from diagnosis is just 27 months.”

FightMND stages several major fundraising events throughout the year including the Big Freeze at the MCG, SockIt2MND in June and July, and Daniher’s Drive in October. with AndrewmanagercommunicationsFightMNDHolmes

Jaye is no stranger to the devastating condition — in a single year, in 2017, he lost his sister, father and cousin to MND, which prompted him to get tested for the gene.

People who inherit an MNDrelated genetic mutation have a high but uncertain chance of developing MND during their lifetime. However, not all people with an MND-related genetic mutation will develop MND, according to MND Australia. While still processing his positive result last year, Jaye was forced to temporarily close his salons — his passion and the core of his business — due to the pandemic.

“Together with our free online application tutorials, we were able to stay connected with clients and show them our loyalty.”

For Osher, 46, that means making sure he finds time for daily exercise. While having a toddler in the house makes the days of going for a 100km ride a thing of the past, he does manage to shoehorn in an hour on the exercise bike or a backyard workout with his kettlebells while his son takes a nap. He says he is more interested in the mental benefits of exercise that come with the release of “happy hormones” such as dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin than the fact it helps him look good in a suit.

“Right now, The Bachelor is going OK, but I always make sure I have other things on the go, because you never know when your time may be up. I have been in that position before and I’ll never let that happen again.”

“For me anxiety is about lack of control,” he explains. “Being in front of a camera, where I am the one holding the mic, and everyone is quiet, is the time when I am most in control.”

“If people want to talk to me about it, then I am happy to share my story,” he says.

But Osher believes that it is up to each individual how they choose to live their lives, and while a vegan diet is right for him that doesn’t mean he is in a rush to tell others they must do the same.

Osher, who has spoken candidly about his mental health struggles, found himself starting to come apart at the seams as the due date for his son approached and, at the urging of his wife, sought help from a doctor.

Performing in front of a huge audience or on live television may seem like an unusual career choice for someone who battles anxiety. Not for Osher.

“I don’t believe in shoving my opinions down other people’s throats. Your garden, your path.”

“The way I feel since I started on a plant-based diet far outweighs any taste sensation on my tongue,” Osher says with a laugh. “I am also coeliac, so I am grateful for the food I get to eat. And my wife (Audrey) is an extraordinary cook, so I don’t feel like I miss out on anything.”

“I drive a lovely electric car — a Nissan Leaf — and if it experiences problems, I wouldn’t try to fix it myself, I’d take it to an expert,” he explains. “It’s the same with mental health. I am not a psychologist, so I cannot fix these issues myself.

“I challenge anyone who has cradled their newborn in their arms as they watched the 6pm news to not say they’ve had moments of fear.

His openness about his diet has drawn criticism from some quarters. He was accused of not being staunch enough in his beliefs because he attended the Melbourne Cup Carnival and continued to wear leather shoes.

The House of Wellness 63 HEARTTOCLOSEYOUR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF CHOLESTEROL IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE WHEN IT COMES TO CORONARY HEALTH WORDS LIZ McGRATH

Unless our levels are too high, cholesterol is not something we think about. Back in the 1960s, news that a high level of cholesterol in the bloodstream was linked to heart disease prompted many to remove foods such as eggs and dairy from their diet. The focus has now changed to the type of fats we are consuming, in particular saturated fats, CSIRO scientist and dietitian Pennie Taylor says. Heart disease is still the biggest killer in Australia, so here is what you need to know about cholesterol.

“This builds up in the arteries and can lead to blockages, ultimately reducing the flow of blood to your heart, which can be life threatening.

“The LDL cholesterol is known as bad cholesterol because it moves towards the arteries and causes the buildup of plaque,” dietitian Juhi Bhambhaney explains.

64 The House of Wellness

“Dietary cholesterol is very limited, there’s not a lot of food containing it,” Dr Taylor says. “We know now that it’s the saturated fats in your diet that get converted to LDL cholesterol.

The CSIRO says it helps to remember LDL as “lousy” and HDL as “helper” cholesterol, with the key to aim for more HDL to keep the risk of heart disease at bay.

MANAGEMENTGOOD

Cholesterol in food is referred to as dietary cholesterol, and includes offal (such as liver and kidneys), pate, egg yolk and prawns. It is now thought it only plays a small role when it comes to bad cholesterol.

“High cholesterol is known as the silent killer because it carries no noticeable signs or symptoms — the only way to find out if yours is too high is to have it checked by your GP.”

Cholesterol is carried in the blood by lipoproteins — the two main ones are known as lowdensity (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL).

Good and bad Cholesterol itself is a type of fat, but it is one that is essential for our health, used to build cell walls, produce some hormones and synthesise vitamin D, the CSIRO’s Pennie Taylor says. “Many people don’t realise around three quarters of the cholesterol in your body is made in the liver, and a small amount comes from the types of dietary fats we eat,” Dr Taylor says. “The liver returns any cholesterol it can’t use back to the bloodstream, giving rise to blood cholesterol.”

“The HDL cholesterol is the good cholesterol because it takes the fat away from the arteries and towards the liver where it’s then removed from the body, protecting against heart disease,” Juhi says.

ABOUT 90 PER CENT OF BLINDNESS AND VISION IMPAIRMENT IN AUSTRALIA IS PREVENTABLE OR TREATABLE IF DETECTED EARLY.

Mindful choices

Replacing rich saturated-fat sources, such as your highly processed meats, with richer polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats like those found in avocado, nuts, seeds, salmon and olive oil can help raise your good cholesterol. Also, increasing your dietary fibre can help mop up excess cholesterol from your blood.”

Juhi says a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, fish and wholegrains — such as those found in the popular Mediterranean diet — can help manage cholesterol levels.

CHOLESTEROL-FRIENDLY FOODS OILY FISH “Oily fish such as salmon and mackerel have essential omega-3 fats that have antiinfl ammatory properties,” Juhi says.

More than 450,000 Aussies have eye health issues, according to the Department of Health. Regular eye tests not only help ensure your eyes are in good health they may also pick up problems early. A doctor’s referral is not necessary to see an optometrist for an eye test.

There are several ways to help keep cholesterol under control such as losing weight, quitting smoking and increasing exercise, with what you eat one of the most important of all.

Listening to upbeat music while working out not only makes it more fun, it may also help keep your heart rate up and fatigue down. An Italian study found listening to songs above 130 beats per minute helped reduce the perceived effort during exercise, such as walking or running, while increasing its benefits.

COMING CLEAN

WORDS KAREN FITTALL You

“Our lungs, kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract and immune system remove or neutralise toxic substances within a few hours after we encounter them,” he says.

“But this has little to do with the elimination of toxins. Anyone, but particularly someone who had a poor diet to start with, who eats more fruit and vegetables, drinks more water, eats fewer foods high in saturated fat and added salt and sugars, and drinks less alcohol will naturally feel better.

“It doesn’t ask or address why you might be feeling sluggish or why you might need a detox in the first place,” Rebecca says. Not only does this potentially risk overlooking symptoms of more serious health issues, she says it also promotes the idea that you can lead an unhealthy lifestyle for most of the year and then reverse any damage by detoxing for a few days. “And that simply doesn’t work,” Rebecca says.

Missing the point

66 The House of Wellness

“The fact is healthy adults have a wonderful system for the removal of waste products and toxins from the body.

For naturopath Rebecca Warren, one of the biggest issues is the quick-fix mentality that most people associate with the word “detox”.

Do you really need to detox?

The feel-good factor Then why did that friend of yours, the one who declared alcohol and gluten, and sugar, salt and fat-laden foods no-go zones in favour of “eating clean” for two weeks, feel so good — and dropped a fair few kilograms to boot?

CLEANSE DO

Tim Crowe says the idea we need to follow a special diet to help our bodies eliminate toxins is not supported by medical science.

DIETS PROMISE PLENTY OF HEALTH PERKS, BUT

Short-term pain for long-term gain?

“A 2015 critical review of detox claims that was published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found no compelling evidence to support the use of detox diets for either weight management or toxin elimination,” Dr Crowe says.

“Plus, on top of the fact that simply not putting toxins in your body for a certain number of days isn’t detoxing, if detox diets genuinely worked, they would eliminate toxins at a faster rate than what your body normally does — and there’s no evidence to support that.”

“Many people do feel better for following a detox diet,” Dr Crowe says.

THEY DELIVER?

“As for weight loss, this is easily explained by the restrictive nature of detox diets, which cut kilojoule intake dramatically. But any weight loss achieved is temporary and is the result of a loss of water and glycogen, rather than body fat. The weight is easily and rapidly regained once the person goes back to a normal eating plan.”

Place a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat and pour in olive oil. Heat for 30 seconds, then add kale and spring onion. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly. Add spinach and cook for a further 3 minutes or until wilted. Pour in tamari and stir. Plate rice in a medium serving bowl. Top with the sauteed greens, avocado, baby tomatoes, chickpeas and kimchi. Sprinkle with torn seaweed and sesame seeds. Serve immediately.

“For example, the liver relies on amino acids to function well, so it’s really important that you’re eating enough good-quality protein — and not just for a week or two, every day.”

“You might be feeling a bit ordinary simply because you don’t have the right fuel that you need. So, as well as going easy on things like alcohol, ensuring your daily diet is nutrient-dense and contains plenty of fibre and protein is vital,” Rebecca says.

RECIPE

BUDDHA BOWL SERVES 1

EVERY MEAL SHOULD INCLUDE AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT COLOURED VEGETABLES OR FRUIT.

For example, only one in 13 Australian adults eats the recommended five or more serves of vegetables a day.

“When naturopaths talk about detoxification, rather than trying to eliminate toxins it’s really about optimising the way the body’s own detoxification processes are working,” Rebecca says.

“When people feel sluggish or lacking energy they automatically think ‘what do I need to quit or eliminate?’ instead of thinking ‘what might I need to add to my diet?’”

In fact, she says what people often need when they feel like ”a detox” is something called “re-nourishment”.

Do this instead of detoxing ... So, what can you do if you feel your health needs a helping hand?

“My top tip is to make sure every meal you eat contains at least three different coloured vegetables or fruit.”

Packed with vegetables, fibre and protein-rich legumes, this meal makes an ideal addition to your daily “re-nourishment” plan. 1 tbsp olive oil 2 cups kale, chopped 1 spring onion, chopped 2 cups baby spinach 1 tbsp tamari ½ cup brown rice, cooked ½ avocado ½ cup baby tomatoes, halved ¼ cup tinned chickpeas ¼ cup kimchi or sauerkraut 1 sheet seaweed, torn ● 1 tsp sesame seeds, toasted

A quest for help after her son was diagnosed with a devastating illness prompted a Sydney mum to join forces with the Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation

Ollie McPhail with mum Patricia Ollie McPhail was only 10 weeks old when he was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. His mother, Patricia, was called into the hospital for results and, with four doctors waiting, instantly knew it was “doom and gloom”.

Soon after Ollie was diagnosed, Patricia came across the Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation. She now works for the charity, which funds research, therapy programs and specialist nurses in children’s hospitals around Australia. It is also involved in government advocacy and fostering community networks. Through these networks, Patricia has connected with others affected by Duchenne.

“The main emotion is grief, then denial and you question why,” Patricia says. What is Duchenne?

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a severe genetic, musclewasting condition that affects one in 3500 boys worldwide but is very rare in girls. A recent report from The Gut Foundation highlighted the overlap of symptoms between endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic pelvic pain (CPP).

The reality is a trip to the GP may not yield an easy fix or diagnosis. But it is vital sufferers persist to find a diagnosis and treatment for problems that are often considered embarrassing or private before long-term damage occurs.

Pain in the pelvic region, for whatever cause, can trigger other problems in the area, endometriosis specialist Anusch Yazdani says.

WORDS ANNA BRAIN

Aching belly and back, painful periods and toilet trouble are symptoms confusingly common to a number of medical conditions. So how do you figure out why your guts hurt?

For example, painful bloating is common to all three conditions, gastroenterologist Terry Bolin says. “We did a survey of about 1400 people and asked them about their bloating,” Professor Bolin says.  “In 17 per cent, they said it was severe enough to disable their work and social life. It’s very common, and it’s very difficult to discern what the cause is.”

INAMORETHANPAINTHEGUTS

“It’s a very important area, where reproductive functions, sexual functions, urinary and bowel functions all come together inside of the pelvis. One abnormality in that area can certainly disrupt all of those,” Dr Yazdani says.  “There’s a significant overlap between the symptoms. We know, for example, that 60 per cent of our patients

one women10in of reproductive age suffer from endometriosis, though not all show symptoms.

CHRONIC PELVIC PAIN

“Women saying they had the same symptoms, but their doctors tell them ‘just take Nurofen, or go on the Pill’. I was like, OK, you guys need to get on top of this, stat. Do not let anybody tell you you don’t know your body, because you know your body better than anyone.”

Recovering from recent surgery, Angie, 30, wrote about her experience on Instagram and says her account “blew up”.

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME IBS is a disorder affecting the large and small intestines. It can cause cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas and diarrhoea and/or constipation. Symptoms of IBS can come and go, even disappear completely, only to return for no apparent reason. Symptoms can be triggered by some foods (although true food allergy is rarely a cause), stress and hormones (symptoms are worse at particular times in the menstrual cycle, similar to endometriosis). The lining of the uterus is shed during a normal period but, with endometriosis, the tissue instead attaches to pelvic organs, including the ovaries. Symptoms include (but are not limited to) pelvic pain especially just before and during a period; irregular and/or heavy menstrual cycles; pain during or after sex; infertility; bladder problems; bowel problems; other gastrointestinal symptoms, especially bloating but also nausea, constipation, vomiting and rectal bleeding.

Prof Bolin says debilitating pelvic pain is often written off as “just women’s problems”, and that women have been conditioned to accept their lot. “It’s very hard,” he says. “You have to find someone who is entirely sympathetic, will listen to you and be prepared to change their mind along the way.” Dr Yazdani agrees that it is important to feel your concerns are being heard. “If your symptoms are severe and interfere with your life it’s important to persist with the line of inquiry,” he says. “Don’t let anyone dismiss you.”

“I was constantly working, feeling rundown, tired, so anxious, my tummy was sore, my back was sore. I was constantly fatigued, and constantly out of breath. And I’m not that unhealthy a person. Ultimately, it turned out my endometriosis had grown back quite a lot. I was like, what’s going on? Thank God I had the second surgery because I had a lot going on in there.”  Angie advocates taking a holistic approach to health, and says her naturopath introduced her to the specialist who performed her second round of surgery. “My biggest thing is to know your surgeon before you let them undertake such an invasive experience, because my first experience with a surgeon was not good. Make sure they have a holistic approach, it’s a real game-changer.

It is estimated 15 to 25 per cent of women suffer from chronic pelvic pain in the lower abdomen and pelvic region, present on most days for six months or more. In some cases no specific cause can be found, so the goal of treatment is to reduce pain and other symptoms and improve quality of life.  with endometriosis also have a functional bowel disorder, or IBS, affecting them significantly.  “About a third of our patients will be diagnosed with some bladder problem, the most common one being interstitial cystitis.”  When seeking a diagnosis, an important starting point is to find a healthcare practitioner who makes you feel comfortable. This may be a GP in metro areas, or a healthcare nurse in non-metro areas.

TOHELPRISEABOVE

WORDS LIZ Mc GRATH

Once thought to only affect children, it is now believed around seven out of 10 kids with ADHD will mature into adults with theWhilecondition.theexact causes are unknown, it tends to run in families and it is frequently misunderstood and under-diagnosed, Dr Concannon says. “Sadly, kids with ADHD are commonly looked at as being naughty and unfocused and disorganised, rather than as being challenged by a brain that works differently.

“I remember seeing two kids and their mum, a very intelligent lady, who said she’d had depression for 20 years. It turned out she had ADHD, she got the help she needed and the right medication and it changed her life.”

“There is also a variant of ADHD that doesn’t present as people being overactive but rather as poor concentration and disorganisation, and therefore is often missed.

It is estimated one in 20 children in Australia have ADHD, and it is more common in boys.

Dr Concannon says there is “no easy fix”, but by learning coping skills it is possible for people with ADHD to harness their talents and rise to their challenges.

The term ADHD describes children or adults who have difficulties regulating their thoughts, words, actions and emotions. They can also struggle to perceive time and to organise their behaviour.

The challenges posed by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are many, but the success stories show they can be overcome

Michael’s energy and hyperactivity was channelled into sport, and some studies suggest creativity and innovation, common Walt Disney and John F. Kennedy had the condition, and Richard Branson, Michael Jordan and Jamie Oliver have it. Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Liv Tyler have spoken about living with the disorder as has the most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps. There is no doubt the restlessness, hyperactivity and distractibility of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can cause serious difficulties in life, but the future can be bright, Sydney paediatrician Patrick Concannon says. “There’s a stereotype that comes with ADHD. However, people with ADHD have great potential,” Dr Concannon, an expert in the field, explains. “With the right diagnosis, support and treatment they can achieve their goals and live full and rewarding lives.”

Swimmer Michael Phelps’ mother, Debbie, agrees. “I built off the gifts ADHD gave him,” she is reported as saying. “ADHD kids have great passion — it just needs to be funnelled.”

“With adults, a large proportion go undiagnosed. Or they’re misdiagnosed as having anxiety or depression. Often it’s only when their child is diagnosed that it’s picked up,” he says.

“I was diagnosed with ADHD at the same time as my Louyear-oldseven-son.”Brownsays she had always known she was different.

It wasn’t until 2016, when she sought help for Jack, now 12, that Lou was diagnosed with ADHD.

Signs hallmarks of the condition, are conducive to business development and innovation.

After her diagnosis, Lou set out to learn everything she could about the disorder and she is now a tireless ADHD advocate and coach.

“For the same reason that ADHD might create problems, like distraction, it can also allow an openness to new ideas,” says Holly White, co-author of the paper and an Assistant Professor of cognitive psychology at Florida’s Eckerd College. “Not being completely focused on a task lets the mind make associations that might not have happened otherwise,” Prof White says. MAY

“My diagnosis changed everything,” Lou says. “ADHD is like living without a pause button; you have no natural ability to stop, think and make conscious decisions. When you take medication, it’s like a space appears, which normally isn’t there, and you can make informed decisions.”

According to Vikki, Bunjie is “the first 100 per cent naturally derived prebiotic and probiotic range for infant skin”.

The Bunjie “pinky promise” is to make it easy to give little skin the best start to life, say the “chief executive aunties” (the title they prefer). And the future? “Well, we named our brand after ‘bungie’ as in bungy jumping, so hopefully this big leap we’re taking will end with our products on shelves around the world, because everyone’s skin deserves the best start to life.”

“We’re obsessed by the microbiome, the community of teeny, tiny microorganisms that protect the skin and keep the skin barrier functioning,” UKborn Lianne, 37, says.

“I’m from a big Greek family and everyone from first cousins to second cousins and beyond has mini humans, and they’ve all been involved in developing our products,” Vikki says with a grin.

The go-getting pair — partners in life and in business — are the brains behind Bunjie, a baby skincare start-up, with the first range recently landing in pharmacies across Australia.

Sydney couple Vikki Maroulis and Lianne Keymer are passionate about many things — their beachside home in Bronte, spending time outdoors and their Boston terrier Bowie. But it is another more unusual passion that has occupied their every waking moment for the past two years — baby skincare.

A new start-up is putting science into balm for babies, with a focus on prebiotics and probiotics for skin WORDS LIZ Mc GRATH

As well as working with scientists to get product formulas right, they were involved in all aspects of the business from bottle designs to marketing, to special infant “testers”.

“Like the gut, skin needs good bacteria to be happy, particularly baby’s skin.”

As with many start-ups, the journey from light-bulb moment to product was beset with obstacles and complications, and Vikki and Lianne say they have become self-taught experts in everything from trademark law to olfactory compositions.

“We’d worked pharmaceuticalsinfor years and had been involved in pretty much everything from R&D to marketing and global sales,” Lianne explains.

The Bunjie team’s “Minibiotics” formula is a patented prebiotic and probiotic complex scientifically formulated to support good skin bacteria in babies and to boost their natural immune system.

While working on the recipes, Sally’s daughters Annabelle, 9, and Elyssa, 4, were happy to be guinea pigs in the trials. “The girls ate everything. It was a good barometer for us to make sure the meals were family friendly, that you could feed them to fussy eaters.”

Sally, 48, says their new book, Dinner’s Done, lays out a plan to cook once, providing ready-meals for the week. Their solution includes seasonal meal plans, with four weeks of recipes for each season. “We give you a shopping list, because that’s part of the hassle,” Sally says. “It’s easy, it’s just a foolproof system. You don’t have to be a talented chef and the best part is it’s incredibly delicious.”

“Oh my god, I’m beside myself,” she says. “My girls are really excited, we’re all very happy.

Sally says their differences are the secret to their success. “I like things quite spicy, whereas she’ll say, ‘that’s far too spicy, far too sweet, let’s do it again’. She loves a lot of fresh ingredients,” Sally says. “We work well together. We’re average people, juggling kids, jobs, business, families. We understand the normal pressures that people are under.”

But last year, while we were scrambling to find solutions in our COVID world, something seismic changed in medical management in Australia. After many years of careful planning and negotiating, the government, medicine and pharmacy shook hands

Well, there is no difference in how your doctor goes about prescribing your medication or how your pharmacist will dispense it. The big difference is that you no longer need to schlep a paper script around. You can elect to receive the script by text message or email that contains a link and a QR code (those weird, squiggly, scannable boxed symbol thingees that resemble an MC Escher print). Your pharmacist can scan the code and dispense your meds as usual. I hear you: “What if I lose my phone?” If you’ve transferred the code to your pharmacist they will still have the record. As will your doctor. OK, “What if I don’t have a smartphone?” Easy, you can elect to have your doctor email the digital script directly to the participating pharmacy of your choice. Oh, and don’t worry, paper scripts are still an option if you prefer, but don’t reject the idea of an e-script just because it’s new te chnology. Hmm, that only leaves pens and odd socks to languish in that “special place”. Any ideas? health wise

Late in my medical career, having become a patient with conditions requiring regular medication, I now fully appreciate the scourge that is paper-based prescriptions.

WHY TAKE ONE TRIP WHEN YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO MULTIPLE BREAKS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WORDS TANIA GOMEZ SmithsBeach,Yallingup RoadByrontrip!BayPHOTOS NSWDESTINATIONBENSE;BOBBY

The House of Wellness 83

Thanks to the unexpected events of the past year, flying overseas for an extended holiday is off the cards — for the time being at least. But this has meant a microcation — or break of less than five nights — is becoming an appealing way to take time off. With a Monash University study finding a widespread increase in psychological symptoms including depression, anxiety and irritability among Australians due to COVID-19 restrictions, it may be time to book that short break.

Take a break

Tunteeya says “variety and novelty are really important for keeping good mental health”.

A Dutch study found those about to take a holiday are often happier before than after it, which was linked to anticipation about the upcoming trip. But are we losing out by not being able to enjoy a longer break? While there is something to be said for the relaxation levels achieved while on an extended holiday, Tunteeya says taking a few days off at different points of the year is still beneficial. “It’s just a different experience,” she says.

“It’s way cheaper, there’s less planning involved and it means that there’s much less of a ‘guilt factor’ being away from work,” travel journalist and The Travel Hop website founder Paul Ewart says. “For me, the best thing about a short break is that it removes the pressure of it being successful.

“Trying to pack too many things into a small getaway is a sure-fire way to come back feeling more exhausted than when you left,” Finder editor-in-chief and travel expert Angus Kidman says.

“Aim to really dedicate yourself to be present in the moment. That might be that you allow yourself certain hours of the day when you’re not using your smartphone or you’re not on the computer or watching TV but engaging in nature instead, or really taking that time for selfreflection,” Tunteeya says.

A recent Roy Morgan survey found 52 per cent of Australians working from home due to COVID-19 are finding it “difficult to switch off from work”. With the separation between office and personal life becoming increasingly blurred, the need for a break is even more“Havingimportant.those frequent breaks means that our mind and body have a chance to relax and to reset,” psychologist and Ikigai Psychology Clinic founder Tunteeya Yamaoka says.

OPEN ROAD Point Picquet Dunsborough,nearWA

Think about it: If you’ve waited a year for your annual fortnight’s holiday and it’s a disaster, you’ll be left devastated. If things go awry on a weekend break, then you’ll feel infinitely less shortchanged,” Paul says. And it is great to have something to look forward to.

“Spending any more than 40 per cent of your time in transit can make your microcation feel like it’s over before it has even begun. For a six-day trip, look at no more than one day of travel each way, as this will allow you four full days of holiday time in between,” Angus says.

To get the most from your break, ensure you are genuinely out of the office and give yourself the opportunity to switch off.

Plan your getaway Microcations are defined by their brevity, so time considerations are important.

“Given that you can only comfortably tick off a few experiences in a limited number of days, be selective and do heaps of research beforehand to make sure that the activities (restaurants, tours, wineries) you choose are the best of the best,” Paul advises.

And the major upside of being able to take multiple breaks is that the holiday blues do not last long — there is always another break just around the corner.

Make the most of it

Location is also key. While you may have your heart set on a particular spot, consider the length of time it takes to get there.

When things start feeling repetitive and monotonous, it may be a sign you need to plan a getaway.

Having an itinerary is always important to ensure you make the most of your time, but it should also be realistic.

With the support of husband Steve Evans and life coaches (a worthwhile investment according to Ashy) she pulled through the darkest of times, and now takes a positive view of the experience: “I think I’ve grown so much resilience now, which is another gift of going through all that.  “The moment that I reached out for help and got help from friends and family, but also from professionals, that definitely got me through and I’m such an advocate for therapy and coaching and mentoring.”

“We had an old app that we completely reinvented. We used the time for our fitness brand to step back and start fresh. It was a bit of a different journey for us.

In her book, Ashy writes: “I believed the only way to stop the pain and fear and to no longer be a burden to my friends and family was for me to end my life.”  Looking back, she can see she was depressed, “100 per cent”.  “I didn’t want to get out of bed. There were times I didn’t want to be here anymore. It was so consuming. I don’t think these women realised the extent of what they were doing to me, the impact it was having. FEARLESS FOOTSTEPS TRUE STORIES THAT CAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF (ExisleADVENTUREPublishing)

The House of Wellness 93

SHIVER ALLIE (HachetteREYNOLDSAustralia)

MAEVETREASURYBINCHY’S (Allen & Unwin) More than 40 stories by the best-selling Irish author are brought together with autobiographical tales, which are being published for the first time.

A remote location high in the French Alps. Five friends. One deadly secret. The debut novel by former professional freestyle snowboarder Allie Reynolds has all the makings of a great Agatha Christie-style whodunnit. When Milla is invited to a reunion weekend at the resort that was the backdrop for her snowboarding successes, she can’t say no. It has been 10 years since she last saw Dale, Heather, Brent and Curtis — and while she would rather forget the events of that winter, it seems someone isn’t so keen to let go of the past. Is it Saskia, Curtis’s sister, who went missing all those years ago and is now presumed dead? Or even worse, is it one of Milla’s so-called friends? The narrative goes between the present and the past, laying the groundwork for a psychological thriller with a chilling finish. Everyone, it appears, has something to hide.

Ornithologist Hattie Bloom, 89, much prefers birds to people. But when she falls off a ladder trying to save her precious owls, Miss Bloom ends up having to recuperate in a nursing home. Former driving instructor Walter Clements, 90, uses bad dad jokes and politically incorrect banter to hide the fact he is still mourning his wife. Other than an overwhelming desire to regain their independence, Hattie and Walter have nothing in common. Brought together by an out-ofcontrol mobility scooter, they decide to plot a great escape. This is a heartwarming story told with great humour as the disparate personalities forced to share living quarters with strangers in their old age come together for a final hurrah. It is also a gentle reminder that every elderly person has a story to tell.

THE VALLEY OF LOST STORIES

UNDER THE GOLDEN SUN Jenny (HachetteAshcroftAustralia) It’s 1941 and Rose Hamilton is about to take a step into the unknown by swapping life in wartime England for a cattle station in rural Queensland. A historical love story in an epic and beautiful setting.

BILL BAILEY’S REMARKABLE GUIDE TO HAPPINESS (Hachette Australia)

Vanessa(HarperCollins)McCausland Four women and their children holiday in a remote hotel in the Blue Mountains. But the picture perfect setting has a tragic history that collides with the painful secrets of the four friends.

Bill Bailey might be known more for his performances in the TV series Black Books and on QI, but the British comedian is also a noted musician, animal lover and author. It is the latter occupation he puts to good use in his pursuit of happiness. Bailey uses humour to great effect — whether it be retelling his daunting experience swimming with sharks to our need for connection, he takes you on a gentle journey. From forest bathing — where you absorb the atmosphere of the forest — to ecopsychology, which looks at “the mental health benefit of being in nature”, it’s a comfortable and joyful look at ways to bring some happiness into your life. And isn’t that what we all need right now.

From confronting a fear of flying to the solitude of travelling solo, taking the (naked) plunge in a bathhouse to hiking up a volcano despite debilitating Crohn’s disease, these writers are ready for anything. At a time when the whole world is having to pause, reset and rethink priorities, these inspiring firstperson pieces also show how humans have the innate ability to rise to life’s many challenges.

Goal Getter Workbooks author Leonie Dawson says following our dreams should be a priority.

Fight the fear While self-doubt and fear often rear their ugly heads when talking about dreams and change, you have to make a choice, Leonie says. “You could absolutely stay stuck in your life ... or you could be more interested in having a glorious life, in being your own best friend and trying new things.”

And while most of us are jumping for joy at seeing the back of it, we are also recognising that 2021 is our chance to press reset.

“I’ve learnt that you really have to step out and take a risk in life. Fear is ever present, but you can let it rule you or you can let the dream rule.”

If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that life is unpredictable.

Passion play The best way to give your creativity a kick-start and find your true passion is to play. “The first thing you should do is write a long list of everything you love doing, or everything you loved as a kid and then start trying things,” Leonie says. “Try stuff and have some fun.”

Kim Miatke had spent 20 years working as a counsellor when she decided to take up painting. “I hadn’t picked up a paint brush since I was given a D for art in Year 8,” Kim says. She was playing with her youngest daughter and a set of watercolour paints when she suddenly knew what she wanted to do. “I realised the power art could have on people’s lives,” Kim says. “I just knew that I wanted to create beauty in the world.” It has now been just over a year since Kim launched her business, Calla Collective. The artisan gift, home and lifestyle store and workshop studio in Melbourne’s north showcases Kim’s creations and works by other makers.

“We live in a chaotic and changing world, and people are realising they only get one chance to do something they love,” Leonie says.

Kick goals Write down your goals and review them regularly. But don’t just have “wishy washy” goals — come up with achievable goals that are “tick-off-able and doable”, Leonie advises. Make it work If you are going to turn your dream into a reality, you need to do the work. Surround yourself with like-minded people and carve out time each day to focus on your dream. “You don’t need to quit your job to become a writer or artist,” she says. “You have to make time for your dreams.”

T hat’s how recruiters work — they call, they make an offer and you have to respond. I don’t want to push my son in any particular sporting direction, I want him to make up his own mind, but he is young and some offers will be better thanLateothers.lastyear we sat on the cusp of the AFL trade period, a new summer of cricket, a fresh golf season, tennis was almost here and the Australian half-fullstillsportingwhenoftaken—spottedofIprofessionalsonIWhorecruitersaroundchampionshipsswimmingwerejustthecorner,andthewereoutinforce.wouldcall,andwouldbepreparedtohandmyovertotheravagesofasportingcareer?Tobefair,he’sonlyfourandamprobablygettingaheadmyself,butIswearI’vesomething.Ihaveno,really.OrhaveI?LikemanyparentsIhavetowearingagiantpairrose-colouredglassesassessingmychild’sprowess.Canyoulayclaimtoaglassattitudewhenthe

Week one without my wife there and I had to get into the pool with my son by myself. So, I sat him on the edge of the pool getting ready to jump in and then I’d pick him up off the edge. Good in theory but in practice he leant forward and fell straight into the pool, sinking like a rock! My heart sank as I jumped in and retrieved him. He was probably under water for two seconds but it felt like two minutes. When I rescued him though, he was happy as Larry and had finally dipped his head under water. Three years on he loves the water but isn’t exactly displaying fish-like characteristics.Footyonthe other hand has brought me (and him, I hope) a significant amount of joy. I will never forget the moment he first made contact with an Aussie Rules footy and executed his first kick! I immediately imagined telling this story many years from now after he had won the Brownlow Medal. My bubble was slightly burst when one day at the park a kid the same age asked if Laddie, then 3, wanted to kick the footy. Laddie got excited and dropped the ball sideways on to his foot and launched a nice little kick, which ended up in the vicinity of the other kid. Then reality set in as the other kid picked up the ball, spun it between his fingers and delivered a perfectly lace-out drop punt to my son. I’ve started playing cricket with him but he hasn’t yet decided which end of the bat he prefers to bat with. Then there’s basketball, and the genuine joy he had when he threw his first ever basket really did make my day. Sadly, I may have introduced too many sports. He now kicks his basketball like a footy, kicks the footy like a soccer ball, uses a golf ball when we play cricket and uses a soccer ball when we play golf. If someone could invent a hybrid sport we may be on to something. The phone is ringing, I have to go. It could be LeBron James! IN

Initially, with the swim lessons I’d be in the pool with Laddie and my wife would stand on the sidelines. Laddie wasn’t settling, was distracted by Mum and often cried. About three lessons in another father said to me, “Is that your wife?” “Yes” I responded, curious as to where this was headed.

“You’ve got to get rid of her.” A bold bit of advice from a man who barely knew me and didn’t know my wife at all! “Your son is distracted by her. If she leaves he’ll focus on the lesson.” As it turns out this was excellent advice, though there were teething problems.

Sitting by the phone and waiting for “that” call can be a stressful time for the father of a freakishly talented young athlete.

glass is only 10 per cent full to start with? We started swim lessons when he was 12 months old and figured that before long he’d be freestyling, breaststroking, butterflying and deep diving his way around the pool. Three years in and I’d love to see him dog paddle, just once, and maybe one day raise the courage to dip his head under the water. He hasn’t exactly taken to it like a ... well ... like a duck to water.
