Kent based Lyrici Arts was founded earlier this year as a not-for-profit limited company working in partnership with local organisations and authorities to address diversity inclusion via arts programming. With a ferocious energy characteristic of the duo, they are currently planning the next two PTT Festivals, and the organisation is about to launch a brand new community project in partnership with Medway Libraries and Medway Council’s Arts Development Team called Legacy. The company has a focus on Black Minority Ethnic (BME) works, and an added remit to include artist development support in their programming. It’s a heady mixture that works.

Goodbye WOW magazine… “…a great and useful read. During my degree it kept me sane during the midnight hours at Kent Uni, by simply reminding me that life was continuing outside my study walls with highly creative local people. Too many newcomers were ready to misinterpret Medway and you helped to prevent that. Full of things to see and do - always encouraging people to make a discovery.”
I write this exactly six years to the day since the launch of WOW magazine on the rainy night of 24 November, 2010 at Simply Italian in Rochester High Street. Most of the people there I didn’t know: I had invented a guest list from the few names I’d picked up in the domestic years I had lived in Medway, before I knew there was an arts scene here; before I had found the arts community; before I discovered that the place is literally thronging with creative minds.
Gillian Flegg, WOW reader, November 2016 My daughter was six and brought some friends. I ordered baseball caps for them with the ‘WOW Medway’ logo and an awful lot of balloons. Looking back, I wonder at my nerve. Last Monday, with great personal sadness, I made public the announcement that after months of deliberation and efforts to find an alternative solution, I have decided to stop printing WOW magazine. It is no secret that it has been a struggle to keep WOW going as a standalone, independent publication, and after a buzzy start to 2016 following last year's crowdfunding campaign, the second half of the year has finally convinced me that it is not possible for the magazine to sustain the level of income it needs to support the labour, print and distribution costs required to produce it. I have made two attempts to sell the business to publishers with media sales and distribution already in place, neither of which were successful. It is worth saying that if there is anyone reading this who would like to have a serious conversation with me on this front, please get in touch.
… Hello wowkent.co.uk I'm delighted to say, however, that while I won't be making the magazine, I have decided to keep wowkent.co.uk, our lovely arts listings website, with the aim to grow and develop the site into Kent’s go-to website for arts and culture. If you’ve not visited, do take a moment to have a look at the Arts Calendar and our arts-related Classes and Workshops and please add your own content. The more people who use the site, the more comprehensive it will become!
Sign up, say hello Our ‘WOW Weekly’ e-news was very popular with readers earlier this year. I am hoping to resurrect an e-newsletter in the Spring, so if you would like to receive this, with useful links to the best of What's On Where, please subscribe by going to our Home page and clicking on the envelope icon in the top right corner.
The End of the Story I have often written about my journey with WOW as it unfolded, so it seems only fair to share the end of the story… In November last year, for a feature on new writing in the December issue, I interviewed by telephone the Marlowe Theatre’s then Literary Associate, playwright Simon Mendes da Costa, whose new play, ‘A Better Woman’ was about to open in the Marlowe Studio. A few weeks later I attended the Press Night, where we met in person. The following day he wrote to me and asked if I would like to have a coffee, or a drink. The following week we met. The following months we met again. In August I moved into his home in Whitstable and then, dear Reader, he asked me to marry him.
Thank you To the Team: WOW has the best team ever! Many, many people gave of their time, often voluntarily, to ensure the magazine survived and thrived. I could not have made WOW for six years without them – too many to name, but there are a few must-mentions: Paul Baker, WOW’s designer, has stayed with the vision through thick and thin. Find him and employ him please: astonesthrow@mac.com. I salute you, Paul. Emma Baker, for running WOW’s distribution with such grace. Ben Cameron, for his gorgeously funny doodles. Wendy Daws and Rob Flood, for innumerable kindnesses. Sheilagh Dyson, for superlative proofreading skills and friendship. Sam Froudist, for great articles, good humour and love. Laurie Harpum, for her wisdom, and single-handedly ensuring that Sheppey receives WOW every month. Carl Jeffrey, for going the extra mile, always. Bill and Ann Lewis, for everything, and always being there. Anna Morell, for contributing quality features with dazzling consistency. Paul Temple, for teaching me about the transfer of enthusiasm. Nick Walker, for writing tirelessly for WOW for six years. Sun Pier House’s Heather Burgess and Ed Gransden, for their practical support and positivity. Simon, for his love, and, finally, my beloved Millie, who was there from the very beginning, saw it all, put up with it all and held my hand. To our Advertisers and Supporters: WOW magazine owes its six years to the loyalty of its advertisers and supporters. There have been countless instances of mutual trust and goodwill in my dealings with the organisations and individuals who chose WOW to promote their work. Heartfelt thanks. And finally, to you, WOW’s readers, for sharing the journey; for giving so generously during the crowdfunding campaign; for becoming subscribers; for your many messages of support and encouragement and for choosing to live life with the arts in mind: thank you from the bottom of my heart. With love, Emma Dewhurst Founder & Editor, WOW magazine 2010 - 2016

RAMS
MON 16 JANUARY 8PM
Icelandic Director Grímur Hákonarson tells the fascinating story about a crisis that brings two estranged sheep farming brothers together. Rams is about silence and a secret shared with a combination of naughty subversion of the rules and a determined desire to uphold to the status quo, even when the course of life cannot be turned back, and life itself can barely be resurrected.

TALE OF TALES
TUESDAY 13 DEC 7.30PM
Director Matteo Garrone’s fascination with the fantastic and mythical turns to a 17th century collection of fairy tales by Italian author Giambattista Basile in his first English language film. Garrone has created a beautiful and fantastic film, with the three stories that clearly exist in the same world, if not the same space. A beautiful collection of dark, twisted and often funny stories, individually told in a gripping manner. rochesterfilmsociety.co.uk Full Film (opposite) for full details, times and prices

SKETCHBOOK BY GARY CLOUGH FROM ‘TRACE ENGINES’, A NEW EXHIBITION AT ROCHESTER ART GALLERY Rochester based artist Gary Clough is Head of International Pathways at UCA and a tutor in Art & Design. ‘Trace Engines’ explores the tense relationship between the world of things and their images. In bringing together the flat outline forms suggestive of manmade objects such as airplanes, vases, buildings and machinery, new and abstract contexts are created for the objects that possibly inspired them. Developed through a collaboration with the AIP Centre in Guangzhou, China and UCA.
‘Trace Engines’ runs until 18 February 2017 at Rochester Art Gallery, Medway Visitor Information Centre, 95 High Street, Rochester ME1 1LX. Opening reception: Thursday 24 November 6.30 – 8.30pm, all welcome. FAMILY DRAWING DAY: Sat 28 January 2017, 10.30am – 3.30pm: A free drawing day using the sketchbook as a tool and museum artefacts as inspiration. Includes a sketching visit from the Gallery to nearby Guildhall Museum. Suitable for all, including accompanied children aged 7 and over. Free: email arts@medway.gov.uk to book a place. In June 2017 Medway will commemorate the 350th anniversary of the Battle of Medway, when the Dutch fleet sailed up the River Medway and caught the English completely unprepared.
“For the news is true, that the Dutch have broke the chain and burned our ships, and perticularly the Royal Charles; other perticulars I know not, but most sad news to be sure.
Upnor Castle will be home to a major new exhibition telling the epic story of the battle, the stories that led to the conflict, the characters involved and the legacy of its outcome. A season of arts and sporting events, family activities and historical talks around the towns will culminate with Medway in Flames, a breathtaking multi-media spectacular retelling the story of the battle.
