After a jam-packed July, August is a slightly calmer month on the arts front (reflected in our temporary slimline state) but what it lacks in volume August makes up for in quality, with some truly top class events. Featured on our cover and main spread on page 10 is Canterbury Gulbenkian’s bOing!, an international family festival that bends over backwards to entertain and inspire every member of the family, from tinies upwards. Don’t miss the world premiere of Jasmin Vardimon Company’s production of ‘Pinocchio’, or Acrojou’s interactive rowboat ‘All at Sea’, featuring a fully-functioning mobile storm… Elsewhere, our brilliant designer, Paul Baker, has surpassed even his own high standards with a beautiful spread jam-packed with summer holiday arts workshops for kids in ‘Hoorah for Summer!’ (see p12). Indeed, congratulations are due to Paul, who was ‘Highly Commended’ for Magazine Design of the Year, in the recent Kent Press and Broadcast Awards. Have a great summer, happy reading and see you next term! Emma Dewhurst editor@wowkent.co.uk

HOPPING DOWN IN KENT I was present at a scratch night event when this project was born, and it’s great to see it come to fruition, going far above its previous intentions: a community folk opera, with songs old and new, audio interviews of people’s memories of hopping, plus moving images and photographs. If you love folk and you love your county, this is for you.
Huguenot Museum, which closes on 20 August. As this country’s first refugees, the Huguenots left behind a legacy which continues today and from the get-go the Museum has given space to and given visitors cause for reflection on the contemporary refugees of today. The exhibition grew from a competition run by the Migration Museum Project and The Guardian newspaper. It’s moving and timely.

Remember music promoters TEA Social? Working to the same ethos but regrouped under a different name, Community Centre aim to bring an eclectic range of music events to new or unusual Medway spaces. Their first gig is on 28 August at Riverside One Studios, Chatham. Rising stars Bristol DIY indiepop band Trust Fund (think Superchunk, Los Campesinos! and Weezer) play with support from Kent band Swearwolves, who describe their sound as ‘queer alt girl created musics that are self referential and probably kind of sad’. Definitely eclectic, then. Tickets at wegottickets.com.

ART MARKET, MAIDSTONE SAT 17 SEPTEMBER 9AM – 4PM
ng… i c u d Intro UENCE CONFL Submissions are invited for a new online creative writing magazine launching this month. Published four times a year (August, October, February and May), ‘Confluence’ aims to promote literary exchange between Medway and the rest of the world. The magazine is being launched by Medway-based literary consultancy Wordsmithery. Co-founder and Managing Director, Sam Hall, had been thinking about putting a magazine together to showcase the best of what the area has to offer for some time. But she wanted to include writers from other deltas too, so that the pieces could mix and merge ‘like the tides’. Therefore each issue will include 50% of submissions from the Medway Delta and 50% from elsewhere. Send your poetry, short plays and short stories for consideration: full terms and conditions are available on the website: confluencemedway. wordpress.com.

Following the success of last year’s event, WOW is proud to be sponsoring this year’s Art Market at Market Hall, Maidstone. Loosely inspired by the success of “The Art Car Boot Fair”, the ART MARKET event will once again be held in the historic agricultural hall in the heart of the busy market place. WOW will also be holding a stall, so come on down and support some of the best local artists around. Last year’s event was buzzy and fun. Look out for next month’s feature. artmarketme14.wordpress.com

Forthcoming immersive cinema experiences from Rochester Kino: Wed 7 Sep: TRAINSPOTTING (18) Wed 28 Sep: BLUE VELVET (18) FILM COLLECTIVE ROCHESTER KINO IS INTRODUCING SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT TO CINEMA-GOERS IN MEDWAY…
Wed 12 Oct: AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (15)
IMMERSIVE CINEMA when at its best is a truly amazing feeling; you go to watch a movie in a setting that makes you feel that you could be in the movie. It's no longer just a film, but an experience. This is not a new concept, with ‘film happenings’ taking place in the 1960s at various cafes and underground venues. More recently Secret Cinema has been setting the standard for large-scale productions for some years now. Smaller affairs pop up at The Troxy in Stepney, and Future Cinema do this very well too; all London-based events, yet not in Medway… until now, that is.
Wed 26 Oct: THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (18) Tue 8 Nov: QUADROPHENIA (15) Screenings are at 7.30pm (doors 7pm) at the Brook Theatre, Chatham ME4 4SE. Tickets: £8 (£3 for students). Booking: rochesterkino.co.uk
THE IMMERSIVE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE NICK WALKER DESCRIBES THIS POPULAR PHENOMENON
For the last two months Rochester Kino has been involving audiences in the experience of watching film in an environment that takes elements from the movie and makes them both larger than life and also wonderfully interactive. ‘Aliens’ and ‘Taxi Driver’ have been screened with cut out alien masks, taxi driver signs produced by Elron Presents and a truly innovative 360 degree visual by Mind Bicycle, to name but a few of the delightful immersive elements employed. For eight years now, Kino have included an introduction before the films on offer, and held a
post screening discussion where the audience can express their thoughts on the film they have just viewed. Now with the help of some of the organisations who are part of the Kino collective, the Brook Theatre in Chatham is transformed into an immersive setting where face masks, props and amazing visuals are presented to the audience. Free sweets and Kino badges of the film viewed are always a standard too! In November Kino will be screening ‘Quadrophenia’ in the large theatre upstairs at the Brook Theatre, Chatham. The film is set against the soundtrack of
The Who's 1973 mighty concept album of the same name: extra visuals, live performance, a soundscape of music and sounds from the film and several players dressed in character will help to create the immersive experience. Does a trip to the local multiplex seem less of a good idea when the tickets are so expensive and the atmosphere can be somewhat soulless? Immersive cinema at Rochester Kino might just be the antidote to this state of affairs, where a sense of occasion is provided at half the price by enthusiastic and friendly cineastes. 99
KENT’S INTERNATIONAL FAMILY FESTIVAL SAT 27 & SUN 28 AUGUST
Chagall’s goat; a magical luminarium; the tale of Pinocchio in dance and films chosen by Mark Kermode – all this is on offer and more at Canterbury’s Gulbenkian over two glorious days at the end of August WOW’s editor Emma Dewhurst asked LIZ MORAN, Director of Gulbenkian and founder and Artistic Director of bOing!, to tell us all about it Firstly, could you tell us how bOing! came about and how it has grown? I joined Gulbenkian in 2011 and have a personal passion for and commitment to work with, for and by children and young people. I began to develop our programme to include more work for families and older young people. One of our initiatives was a family day called ‘Bounce’ in 2013. We were so overwhelmed by the response to that event that it fuelled the idea to develop it into a bigger festival – bOing!. We were successful in securing funding from
Arts Council England and Kent County Council and the first bOing! was launched in 2014. What is your vision for bOing!? Central to our vision for bOing! is a ‘family’ festival with a programme and activities that genuinely have something for all ages from 0-110 to share, be inspired by and enjoy together. We are also committed to ensuring our work is accessible to all and work with companies such as Oily Cart and Frozen Light. The latter bring their immersive production, ‘Home’, for audiences with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), to this year’s festival. Gulbenkian appears to take enormous trouble to include the very young in its programming. Is this part of your overall remit? We believe that no matter what age you are you should have access to creative work of the highest quality. We don’t think of children and young people as audiences of the future but rather audiences now.
The world premiere of ‘Pinocchio’ by Jasmin Vardimon Company takes place at bOing! 2016. How did this come about? We are fortunate to have such an internationally renowned company based in Kent. Their work is highly innovative and of the highest quality and yet until now Jasmin had not created any work with children and young people in mind. We discussed this and ‘Pinocchio’ was born! This is very exciting for us as after bOing! the show goes on a national tour to venues such as Sadler’s Wells. What other new pieces might we see? The programme includes several UK premieres, including the incredible Compagnia TPO from Italy, with a beautiful piece creating an interactive ‘Pop Up Garden’. We have commissioned a show for the very young from France inspired by the artist Chagall and we have also cocommissioned ‘RIDE’, a new outdoor show which features a Red Orion car as you have never seen a car before!
And a first for Kent is the stunning Mirazozo Luminarium which has been created by Architects of Air – a cathedral of light and colour. It’s great that in addition to top UK companies, bOing! brings quality international work to Kent. Dybwikdans from Norway are returning this year: what do they do? Following their lovely show for babies last year, Dybwikdans return with a show for a slightly older age range of 3-5 years, based on ‘The Princess and the Pea’. The company was so impressed with bOing! last year that they are in discussion with funders in Norway about the need for a bOing! in Norway. What are you most looking forward to at this year’s festival? I genuinely cannot single anything out! What I most look forward to is the buzz and excitement that bOing! seems to generate and the fact that for some children this will be their very first experience of live performance.
Is there anything else you would particularly like to mention? Yes! ART31 (young people aged 14-25 years) have their own stage and are programming everything for that themselves, including bands such as Tankus the Henge. Also, we have an international discussion chaired by Noel Jordan (Festival Director of Imaginate) to debate who decides what children should/can see, given that cinema has very strict regulation and live performance does not. How do you envisage bOing! will develop in the future?
engage and debate issues around creating and producing work for children and young people. Many events are free. For ticketed events email boxoffice@kent. ac.uk, call: 01227 769075 or buy in person at the Gulbenkian. A limited number of baby on lap tickets are available per show or screening. Look out for a week of surprises in Canterbury City Centre in the lead up to bOing! Gulbenkian, University of Kent, Canterbury CT2 7NB. boingfestival.com
We expect the festival to develop over a longer period in future years and to have more activity taking place across Kent. As mentioned the Norway connection is very exciting and as we develop closer relationships with companies and festivals in Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium and others we hope to have even more international collaboration and to attract international delegates to 11

Their actions included tunnelling into enemy territory, surveying the area to reflect a constantly changing battlefield and using experimental technologies like a 56 feet long, 2.5 tonne flamethrower, gasmasks and trench armour. The Royal Engineers were key to the Army's efforts at the Somme. The exhibition is located in our Bridge Study Centre and runs to 20 December. Entry to the Museum and exhibition are FREE for the rest of 2016, due to the main building being closed for building works.

DARRELL HAWKINS
Drew, acrylic paint on canvas, 50 x 40cm, 2016 FANBOY, an exhibition of new paintings by Darrell Hawkins curated by Matt Bray, goes on display at Sun Pier House Gallery this month. Chatham-born Hawkins is a contemporary British artist who lives and works in London and Gravesend. Known and celebrated for the fluorescent vibrancy of the colour in his works, Hawkins successful solo show, ‘Immaculate Confection’, exhibited at London’s Saatchi Gallery last year. The show’s title refers to the method Hawkins uses to create his work, collecting imagery online to create a personal archive which he then cuts and pastes together to create digital collages which form the source imagery for his paintings. Some of these digital collages will be on show in this exhibition for the very first time. FANBOY runs at Sun Pier House Gallery, Medway Street, Chatham ME4 4HF between 5 and 27 August 2016. Open Tue – Sat 10am to 4pm. Sundays 12 noon to 4pm. Closed Mondays. Please note there is currently no disabled access to the Gallery.
