REALLY GOOD THINGS TO DO THIS MONTH! LIVING WITH LUKE This one-man show written and performed by Paul T Davies has created quite a stir since it premiered at The Mercury Theatre in Colchester. Davies, also known as blogger Danson Thunderbolt, adapted the play from his own blog posts about his relationship with his autistic son, Luke. Davies uses the metaphor of the wrestling ring for stage set to represent his struggles with Luke’s ‘autistic shadow’. The show is suitable for ages 14+ and contains language some may find offensive, but it will also move and provoke you. Go to dansonthunderbolt. wordpress.com if you’d like to read the blog posts and to the Central Theatre, Chatham on 10 October if you’d like to see the show.

amusing and delightful they are. You’ll have to pop in, treat yourself to a very good Pausenbrot coffee and have a look.

HALF TERM KIDS Gillingham’s Royal Engineer’s Museum has been closed much of the year for refurbishment, but the Museum continue to run a terrific workshop programme during half term in the Bridge Study Centre. The workshops’ theme is the Second World War, with sessions every day between 10.30am - 1pm and then 1,30pm – 3.30pm that aim to spark the imagination and help bring history to life with replica object making and handling of WW2 artefacts from the Museum’s collection. And it’s all free!

SALSA SUNDAY TEABAG PAINTINGS If you’ve not yet dropped by Pausenbrot Café by Rochester Riverside (off Doust Way), now is the time to go. Artist Jessica FitzHoward’s artwork, which features on one wall alongside Wynford Vaughan-Thomas’s larger paintings, is small but delightful. To tell you that she paints pictures of cows onto tea bags simply doesn’t do justice to just how

Ah, Salsa at the Spiegeltent: what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon? First time Salsa dancers are as welcome as seasoned pros to Canterbury Festival’s Salsa Sunday, led by William Arias. There will be a one hour workshop for all, followed by two hours of music and demonstrations. All levels welcome and a partner, you will be glad to hear, is not essential.

POETRY REVIEW:

VILLA ALBANIA by Sinister Dexter ‘Villa Albania’ is a collection of over 40 poems by the character Sinister Dexter. A brief biography at the start of the book marks him as the son of a factory owner and opera singer, Anglo-Italian, an ingénu in World War One, witness to the seismic changes in Europe throughout the 20th century from Passchendaele to Hiroshima, with this being his final collection of work. A smudge on the mirror of perception before the page has even been turned. Sinister Dexter is not real. But without him, there is no poem. Without the artifice, there is no Art. In ‘Asylum’ a protagonist is tortured for information, giving up Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence, a Benny Goodman reference, and a physical shuffle, stuck, round, and round, like the conundrum presented within the poem itself. ‘Brutality of Youth’ weighs up a life of killing and loss. ‘Call Yourself An Englishman’ is all colour – a filmic moment of first person thought, somewhere tropical, beautiful, juxtaposed with the internal monologue of a troubled man. There is a precosity to the poetry – a depth while dashing off, and a scrabble bag approach to content.

There is a universality to each sketch and scenario. A stab of pen at Big Themes – loss, grief, fear, emptiness, life, purpose, love, against big historical backdrops, drawn with an artist’s eye for colour and texture, reimagined through words. That is no surprise when you are aware that the author is actually Malcolm Attryde’s alter ego. Attryde has long been a quiet, powerful force on the Medway arts scene, his world-class textural paintings influenced by Kurt Schwitters and, for me, following on from Mark Rothko with their tone, palettes and deeply meditative qualities. Qualities echoed and evident in these poems. The oxidised prison bars and café colours of ‘Paris Was Never Like This’ are practically smeared upon the page with a knife. Rich, synaesthetic sensations present a metaphor for the auteur’s inner state – a place of deep unease, grasping for beauty, danger, vivacity – a sense of being fully present and alive, laid out beneath a bare light bulb, a last gasp of a stanza; a last grasp at that painterly colour and texture before a physical crumple and slump. The silence at the end of the page speaks and buzzes as loudly as the words which have come before.

ANNA MORELL REVIEWS

But perhaps the strongest and most unifying aspect of these poems is that each is an exploration of emotion in relation to masculinity – the backdrop of the biog somehow less important than the minutiae of the narrative voices’ interior lives. Big ideas in small heads and troubled hearts. It’s a bold, clever, playful and beautiful collection. As good as anything from Faber or Bloodaxe. Somewhat astonishingly, because although it is Dexter’s final written work, it is actually Attryde’s first. ‘Villa Albania’ (ISBN 978-1-52720165-1) is available from Baggins Book Bazaar, 19 High Street Rochester ME1 1PY. Tel: 01634 811651. Email: godfreygeorge@btconnect. com; or directly from the author: malcolm.attryde@btinternet.com. Price £10.00. Publisher: CPI Group (UK Limited). F: Sinter Imprint

ROCHESTER LITERATURE FESTIVAL

FEATURING THE TURTLE MOVES, A TRIBUTE TO SIR TERRY PRATCHETT

1 - 9 October On the eve of its 4th edition, Co-Founder and Director JAYE NOLAN describes the journey of this popular local festival One hot, sunny July afternoon in 2012, the RLF team pitched up at Eastgate House gardens for its launch event, The Garden Party. An eclectic mix of music, poetry and storytelling set the tone for the inaugural festival in 2013. Funded purely by enthusiasm and powered by the supreme local talent Medway has to offer, ‘Other Worlds, Other Voices’ was moderately successful considering it was organised inside three months and with no money. Then came the hard work of trying to maintain that essence, still with no funding, and also, no experience of running an arts organisation. Yet here we are, on the cusp of delivering our fourth festival, ‘Written Worlds, Inspiring Places’. We’ve learnt a lot along the way - from being overly ambitious with ‘Mad, Bad & Dangerous to Know’ in 2014 to reducing to one weekend for ‘Live’n’Local’ in 2015, which allowed time to complete four main objectives: appoint a Patron (the lovely Lisa Cutts); find a print partner to sponsor our publicity materials (thank you, TT Litho); forge a more meaningful partnership with Medway Libraries and finally, obtain funding - any funding - that would help us to grow. Although not core funded, our Memory Box project has been commissioned four times now, while funding for an iPad from the Lady Neville Charity enabled us to roll out the project more efficiently. Huge thanks to local

Tory and Labour councillors who also gave us a grant this year to cover expenses, and the City Of Rochester Society, whose grant set up the basis for ‘The Turtle Moves’ activities, our tribute to Sir Terry Pratchett. Our partnership with Medway Libraries means that we have two wonderful and quite different author talks this year, while the same enthusiasm that imbued previous events shows in the quality of writers delivering our workshops and performing for us in this year’s Cafe Crawl. Were it not for their generosity, there wouldn’t be a festival. Likewise, a new partnership with Medway Adult Education has given us scope to deliver workshops, both with a suitable venue, and in the case of ‘The Turtle Moves’, tutors also. The passion of various local partners - artists and high street businesses - in helping us to deliver the tribute day bodes well for its future as a regular addition to the festival. It’s a cliché, but running the RLF really is a labour of love. Next year will undoubtedly look a little different again, as we try to meet its needs within the confines of budget and resources. We do hope you’ll stick with us for the journey. See you on the other side! CANTERBURY FESTIVAL 15 OCTOBER – 5 NOVEMBER 2016 With over 200 events taking place in venues across the city, WOW’s Editor EMMA DEWHURST previews a handful of highlights

Canterbury Festival is back for 2016 and this year it spans a whopping three weeks, with a vast programme of events to suit all ages and pockets. Established in the 1920s by the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, the Festival has grown from its first theatrical and musical offerings to include acts from further afield, adopting the title, ‘Kent’s International Arts Festival’ in 2004.

SPIEGELTENT The addition in 2013 of the gorgeous and glamourous Spiegeltent (an original, 1920s travelling tent decked with mirrors) introduced a brand new audience strand to the Festival, with a staggering 60% being first-time Festival goers. The Spiegeltent’s events now sit at the heart of the programme and this year the Spiegeltent is more accessible than ever, having moved to sit on Kingsmead Car Park, just a short stroll down the river from the city centre.

The comical and gifted cast make a brand new musical comedy completely from scratch, based on audience suggestions. Expect drama, catchy melodies, hilarious interactions and dazzling dance routines. The show plays for one night only, on Friday 21 October, at the Marlowe Theatre.

CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS

CIRCA

Dubbed “Circus at its purest and most thrilling,” (Daily Review, Sydney), Brisbane based Contemporary Circus Company Circa is one of the Festival’s international offerings. Three artists perform ‘What Will Have Been’ in the intimate surroundings of The Spiegeltent. The company approaches circus as art, not spectacle, combining dance, acrobatics, theatre and music to create shows that move as well as thrill. This looks beautiful. 27 – 29 Oct, 7pm at The Spiegeltent.

MODERN FOLK

OYSTERBAND MUSICAL MADNESS SHOWSTOPPER!

THE IMPROVISED MUSICAL Imagine a whole musical created before your eyes based on a suggestion made by you… That’s essentially what happens in ‘Showstopper! The Improvised Musical’.

Electric folk, folk rock and folk punk in a winning combination from a band that has played festivals, concerts, bars, rallies (and jails!) the world over. Oysterband came together in Canterbury back in the 1970s and have since taken the world by storm. With more than a dozen studio albums under their belt, and acoustic at their heart, the band are touring their recent album, ‘This House Will Stand: the best of Oysterband 1998-2015’. Saturday 22 Oct, 7.30pm at the Marlowe Theatre.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

VARIETY SOUP For those looking for a family friendly performance, ‘Variety Soup’ ticks every box. The multi awardwinning comedy troupe Slightly Fat Features are in Canterbury for two nights, performing a riotous comedy cabaret for all ages, shapes and sizes. Expect live music, bullet catching,

Grayson Perry:

The Annunciation of the Virgin Deal, 2012

The Vanity of Small Differences “Of all the pieces I have made this was the one I conceived from the outset as a public artwork. I hope that wherever it goes it not only delights the eyes but also sparks debate about class, taste and British Society.” Grayson Perry ‘The Vanity of Small Differences’ is a touring exhibition of six, largescale exuberant tapestries by Turner Prize- winning artist Grayson Perry. It opens at The Beaney House of Art and Knowledge on 8 October as part of this year’s Canterbury Festival. Perry’s large-scale tapestries were created alongside the BAFTA awardwinning Channel 4 series, ‘All in the Best Possible Taste’ and were inspired by the 18th century painter William Hogarth’s moral tale, ‘A Rake’s Progress’. They follow the rise and fall of a fictional anti-hero called Tim Rakewell, and feature the characters, objects and social rituals encountered by the

artist on his journeys through Kent, Sunderland, and The Cotswolds for the television series. Born in Essex and from a working class background, much of Grayson Perry’s work, both past and present, expresses his preoccupation with the connection between taste and class. “The tapestries tell a story of class mobility. I think nothing has such a strong influence on our aesthetic taste as the social class we grow up in.” The artist believes middle class Britons to be those most acutely self-conscious about what their taste decisions say about themselves. One of the tapestries inspired by Perry’s visit to Kent, ‘The Annunciation of the Virgin Deal’, includes all the everyday essentials which signify the household’s allegiance to a particular “taste tribe”, from the cafetière and organic vegetables on the table to the Le Creuset sitting on the Aga. The artist’s own social mobility, which has taken him on a journey from his childhood Essex to his current home in Islington, reflects this:

“A childhood spent marinating in the material culture of one’s class means taste is soaked right through you. Cut me and, beneath the thick crust of Islington, it still says ‘Essex’ all the way through.” Tapestry has long been used as the chosen medium of expression for art and social history, and Grayson Perry’s works are no exception: the artist elevates the medium, delivering devastatingly acute social commentary in an accessible, impactful form with something for everyone: visitors would be hard pressed not to be able to find some canny detail to which they can relate. “Tapestry is the art form of grand houses… I enjoy the idea of using this costly and ancient medium to show the commonplace dramas of modern British life.” Each of Perry’s scenes is rendered perfectly in wool, cotton and silk but, unlike traditionally woven tapestries that could take teams of workers many months to produce, with the opportunities afforded by today’s mechanical looms Perry is able to make a tapestry in less than a day:

Photography © Stephen White

“Like many of the tapestries I came across in lovely saloons, mine are woven in Flanders. Unlike their centuries old forbears, I designed them using Photoshop and they were woven at dazzling speed on a computercontrolled loom.” The speed taken to make the tapestries belies their extraordinary detail, however. These are not pieces dreamed up in a moment: the many layers of reference to taste, class and our shared human foibles are multiple and make for amused, thoughtful viewing. Go when you have more than a few moments to ponder, chuckle and admire. ‘Grayson Perry: The Vanity of Small Differences’ opens in the Special Exhibitions Room at The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge, 18 High Street, Canterbury CT1 2RA on Saturday 8 October and runs to Sunday 4 December. Free admission. thebeaney.co.uk

DHEEPAN (2016)

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) *

THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES (2016)

The film is preceded by an introduction by The Stinking Pause Podcast and also a live performance! Has it really been 25 years? There are few more memorable moments than the introduction to Dr Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) and it still shivers when you see him for the first time. His eyes that stare straight into the camera rather than at any element in the film! Directed by Jonathan Demme, from the novel by Thomas Harris, this superbly crafted suspense thriller creates a wonderful interplay between Lecter and FBI agent Starling (Jodie Foster). The presence of Evil has rarely been so manifestly demonstrated!

Filmmaker Michael Winterbottom joins forces with British comedian Russell Brand (author of ‘Revolution’) to examine the financial crisis in this political documentary. Taking a look at various economic policies created by Milton Friedman, utilised by Reagan and Thatcher’s governments, where the rich get richer and the poor… well you know the rest! An important look at the growing disparity between different economic classes told via news networks and cultural mythology and of course Brand’s angry and funny ranting style.

TUESDAY 18 OCT, 7.30PM

Writer/Director Jacques Audiard’s (‘A Prophet’, ‘Rust and Bone’) Cannes Palme d’Or winner is a controversial and powerful story of a Sri Lankan Tamil warrior who is forced to flee to France to escape the civil war and forge a new life for himself in Paris. This raw, gritty and sympathetic story about the immigrant experience in France is a sharply observed drama about identity and separation, strangeness and commonalities, and making do while hoping for something better.

Love, Hate and Twists of Fate PHIL DILLON REVIEWS THE DEBUT ALBUM

E: stephenharries.glass@gmail.com T: 0779 608 0338 Facebook: Stephen Harries Stained Glass strangepaul.com Rochester & Goldfinch Galleries Whitstable

‘Love, Hate and Twists of Fate’ is the long-anticipated debut album from Rastko. Former Singing Loins Chris ‘Arfur’ Allen, Rob Shepherd and John Forrester are joined by ex- Flat Earther Steve Moore on a warm, radio-friendly gem of an album with a punch in its lyrics and some wry and ragged observational writing from Allen & Shepherd, undertaken separately from each other, but nonetheless arriving at a fully formed whole in terms of an identity for the band. Lyrically and thematically, it’s a right old assortment. There’s disappointment, war zones, bitterness, death, history, defiance, resignation and pigs that can see the wind. That last one really needed addressing, so it’s good that they’ve done it. But what does it sound like? Well, it sounds enough like the Singing Loins for you to like it, and different enough from them to be a genuine departure as it leans in places towards alternative rock, albeit played primarily on acoustic instruments. It’s played with sufficient passion that there’s a roughness around the edges in places, in spite of the musicianship. This is a good thing. ‘Love, Hate and Twists of Fate’ is launched in Rochester on 7 October at The Crown Freehouse, Rochester. Tickets are available via www.rastkomusic.com
