I was wondering the size of the projector which you can provide us. I need to make a plinth that locks the projector, laptop, kinect in so I need to know the projector size. WEEK 1 SUNDAY // MEETING WITH FERNANDO FUENTES // LA CANTINA 11am
notes : 1. Fernando, wife and Maria - very interested to collaborate. Within one short meeting have has out planned for collaboration for the urban picnic and also other programmes for Flow Fields. 2. La Cantina has the capactiy to help with catering and license to prepare food. Matadero works very well with La Cantina - makes negotiations easier!! A netwrok has already been established before AAIS came in. AAIS just hook into the network. 3. in return, La Cantina and Olivia te Cuida get more publicity and business and oppurtunity to be involved in events more than just catering but more towards social and cultural design activities. // collaboration with olivia te cuida 06 June | THURSDAY Opening Night [ 7pm ] OTC to prepare a stand selling food items for the public outside Nave 16.2 Collaborate with FEM to draw the crowd in from the courtyard

WEEK 1 SUNDAY UPDATE WITH EMILIANO From: Sent: To: Bcc:
Sue Jan Yeong (suejan_231@hotmail.com) Sunday, 2 Jun, 2013 1: 36 PM ea@fundacioenricmiralles.com (ea@fundacioenricmiralles.com) Allard van Hoorn (allard@allardvanhoorn.com); Theo Lorenz (theo@interprofessionals.net)
Hello Emiliano, just some updates about the urban picnic and AAIS Madrid programe. Had a meeting with Fernando Fuetes - the chef that helped AAIS last year for the dining. He is also the owner of the La Cantina restaurant and Olivia te Cuida. 1) There will be a meeting for the next urban picnic collaboration on monday, 1pm - La Cantina. 2) Basically, Olivia te Cuida will be the main food vendor/ producer for the 4 days of our event. As you mentioned, Olivia Rico of Matadero is okay with selling food as long as it is at a reasonable price. Matadero is very comfortable and familiar with Olivia te Cuida catering and prices - makes its easier for us. 3) I attached the updated programme of AAIS. This is the involvement of Olivia te Cuida for all 4 days Thurs, 06 food and drinks sold outside Nave 16 (7-9pm) for opening night. 10pm : possibility of having a midnight picnic indoors (more for the AAIS guest once the public has left - to confirm with Olivia Rico) Friday, 07 drinks only (7.30 -9pm) // cocktails // offiical beer of Matadero - Mahou. We have no sponsorship unfortunately. (Fernando will bring in a small bar into the Nave 16 exhibition space after performance)
Saturday 08 Fernando to collaborate and work with Enric Miralles students’ furniture to create the setting for urban picnic. 2-7pm (food and drinks ) - provide a terrace for the people coming for the concert at 7pm. 7-9pm (drinks only) - provide a terrace for the people coming for AAIS performance at 9pm Sunday 09 Continuation of urban picnic. 2-6pm (F&B) more relaxed atmosphere - provide terrace for people coming for the concert at 4pm.
4) as of now, the main food vendor is only Olivia te Cuida.Fernando is comfortable with providing enough capacity food wise for the public. however if you think it would be better to bring in more food producers, we can continue networking and looking for more. to be discussed in the meeting on Monday. Hope to hear some feedback from you.Fernando is very interested in working together with us to create a nice atmosphere for the urban picnic area. thanks! Sue Jan
// SETUP PROGRESS notes : 1. Mylar configuration takes quite long - readjusting the heights and depths in order to have it ready for when jinny comes to instal on ceiling. 2. video compilation - adjusting the logos and requirements from each collaborator - prolongs the process! 3. Rope and pulley system for fabric costume : time consuming for one person. requires multiple people to work on it at one go. 4. Lyn got help from the Miralles students to build the domes - gave them better idea of what we are constructing in order for us to collaborate. 5. Working in Matadero : other projects are ongoing at the same time - need to allow for readjustments to time schedule. 6. Constantly keep in communication with everyone on progress of work! IMPORTANT!!!!

// LISBON UPDATES Hi All, Today me and Young went to the presentation of Close, Closer, which to me, looks really exciting. Three curators presented local projects that were very promising. We will be introduced to a contact person called Liliana with whom we can work closer for programming and promotion Events like a ROCA LISBON talk can be collateral events and in the program Catalog // program book will be going to printer in two weeks > we need to start making the material now Beatrice asks us to send the LON & MAD images that are on Dropbox (which I showed) to her NOW so she will discuss them with all curators and staff from this week on as she is in LISBON > this should be done directly and is very important We can hook into their food program They like a lounge area in the back of the patio

Hi all, Today Young ,Elyse and I had a discussion about the schedule and tasks. Here’s the tasks in the following days: 1. today the painting on most of walls has already been finished. we need to paint the rest of the walls and the ceiling. hopefully the lights on the ceiling will be taken down tomorrow morning, so I suggest we finish all the painting before tomorrow dinner. Can everyone who has time come at 10am to help the painting? Wear old clothes, shoes and protect your hair please. we used up all the black paint today so I’ll go to buy a new one early in the morning. 2. I’ll be doing the physical model tomorrow whole day. What I need to do is the model itself, the small lighting on the model, the black box and the shelf(maybe only legs) supporting the box. 3. what we need to hang is the solid fabric and the mylar. young & Helen, could you try to set up the hanging as soon as possible after we finish painting the room? And Young also need to do the projection test after hanging, so let’s set up as early as possible. 4. We’re gonna print about 30 photos tomorrow and put them on the wall on Wednesday morning. At least one wall of photos need to be finished on Wednesday. I’ll go and buy 5mm black foam boards and double-side tape tomorrow for the photos. 5. We need a poster as the thank list to stick on the glass window beside the door. Who will take charge of it? Thanks everyone! See you tomorrow! Best,Lyn _____________________________ Hi all, Thank you for all of the organization. I’m back but sick again even though I’m on antibiotics :( Anyway, do I need to organize oscillating fans etc? If so how many? When do you predict I can hang the Mylar? Tonight or tomorrow? Helen _________________
Hello Theo, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! You still look young like me so forget about the age. Hahah I took photos but room is all black you can’t see anything. We did projector testing (size, distance, brightness). Halogen lights are installed. Prints are ordered and ready to pick up tomorrow morning. WEEK 3 SATURDAY // emails discussion From: Sue Jan Yeong (suejan_231@hotmail.com) Sent: Friday, 19 Jul, 2013 11: 27 AM To: Theo Lorenz (theo@interprofessionals.net) in regards to Theo’s email, here is my response and things that i would like to lay out on the table to be discussed. a) there is no concrete decision or plan or schedule of production yet. this is because i feel everyone is still in the midst of approaching Lisbon with different themes and ideas in mind. As we all recall from term 2, it took us alot of time spent together to collectively decide on the concept and basis of all our design. i do apologize for the lack the input on my side as i cannot be there all the time for discussions and this also slows down the progress of group decisions collectively. b) please refer to the pdf for the compilation of what i have received, heard, ideas, and my thoughts so far. it contains my own conclusions based on skype sessions and individual conversations with classmates. - concept points which is open for everyone to add on or take away. - possibility of integrations with new ideas and existing elements please do give me your input, advice, correction, thoughts, feedback etc. :)
Thank you Sue Jan, all the more important we meet at 2.30pm. If there is no decision I will have to do one based on what I see. So all opinions, including feasible solutions need to be on the table! Best T
Hello Jan I read your attachment and it seemed you summurised it well. Thanks. I guess the issue is how tod develop the idea and detail of the script where we are stuck at the moment. I haven’ talked to Theo but I told Allard that I need some time to deepen my idea rather than Jump in to making proto-type costumes straight away. I want to do more resarch of translation from one language to another. Unless I come up with a concrete idea, the performce will remain as superfacial collaboration of sound, movement, sructure and multi-media which happened at Roca London and Marid event. Keep me post your process through email or tumblr. Cheers
Dear all, After we and Allard summarised the outline for all of you, you need all prepare the precise information for the lisbon team (including Artur from roca) by tomorrow lunch time and meet us at 2pm at the AA (As you might have recognised in Ines email the say they need this information now in order to see IF they can host you!). It is essential that we get a productive and recognisable input from each of you (ALL MEANS ALL , Sue Jan, Lynette, Mauricio, Helen, Young, Elyse !!!! this will influence our judgment of your overall grade for the production)! See you in the studio or on Skype!!!!

INTEGRATION
possibility of integrating the water effects with light reflections, and the base of the canopies to create an experiment lab of rock crystal growing. if the base of these canopies were planted in pools of salt water, could they have salt crystalizing on them over a period of time?
SALT CRYSTALIZATION | PRISMS | WATER this stems from the idea of transformation, leaving traces and the completion of a design by the audience. i am personally very interested in the idea that audience can take back a part of the design of Flow Fields. this for me is the realization of dissolving, the journey of water from the ocean returning to the air and starting a new cycle again. it also represents the culmination of us as our 3rd and final event - leaving traces of our designs with the public.
growing rock crystals also represents a experimentation part of many education systems - hence pedagogy.
personal open proposal - i am open to it not being used at all, or being intergrated somehow with other ideas. currently, this idea has no relation to sound - i would be interested to find out how i can link this with soundscapes.
and as Lisbon is situated by the ocean, SALT WATER + TIME & TRANSFORMATION = ROCK SALT CRYSTALS

WEEK 4 SUNDAY YOUNG_DIAGRAMS AND DEVELOPMENT OF CLOUD IDEAS The Cloud Unidentifiable object which seems like cloud is suspended on the wall of the courtyard. As time passes, it gradually expends its structure and move slowly along side of the wall. The light and shadow add an illusion of mobility and transformation. Activated time | Distortion of Memory – performance The Cloud transform in to dancers’s dress. The distinctive skin of the cloud gradually transform to bodily figure and becomes the dancers’ second skin. It wanders the gradient states of external structure and body space. The projected memory mapped on cloud is totally distorted by dancers’ movement and creates ambiguity of physical / virtual body figure and the actual form / illusion of fabric surface. Light effect reveals the actual costume’s structure that is created by the dancers movement. Stage lighting make the surface opaque, yet when the dancers light up from inside of the costume, the surface turns transparent again.the visitors as activate device and instructions.
// ELYSE_DIAGRAMS AND DEVELOPMENT OF FABRIC SPEAKERS Around 30 to 60 of fabric speakers will be produce. Half of them will use power outlet that has stable power with good sound qualities. Half of them will use batteries to supply the power that can offer the mobility whenever the situation needs it. The fabric with the speaker part will be hung with the fabric in the dome. The magnets will be attached to hearing cones, and give it to the visitors as activate device and instructions. SEPTEMBER 11 Fabric speakers play the pre-record of the sound of children, sound of Lisbon etc. SEPTEMBER 12 - 14 Fabric speakers will gradually change the sound to visitor’s sound in courtyard, and the sound from open rehearsal. SEPTEMBER 15 Fabric speakers will update all its sounds to the current event. The sounds will be record and replayed as the visitors to re-interpret and re-create their memory of the Palace.

SOUNDSCAPES
SING THE SUN!
A permanent sound installation that stages different sound layers (memories of the space, events and performance). The individual sounds come from fabric speakers hanging from the domes, each containing recordings of memories of school. These are triggered by hearing cones containing magnets that generate the sounds coming from the fabric speakers.
The performatic choir experience "Sing the Sun!" will invite you to expand your spatial awareness, to "see" the boundaries of your own dwelling space through the voices of children and adult vocalists. They will overflow your territory performing light-colour-tone translations, singing the harmonies of sunlight.
1915h - 1949h
HEAR THE LIGHT! Hear the Light! is a performative lab where sunlight is translated to colour-music through sound and dance. Using Newton’s de-composition of colours experiment, a new collective composition will be formed through a range of mediums. Combining prerecorded light to sound translations made by primary school children, live sounds made by Distractfold Ensemble and live dance by New Movement Collective (UK), the result will be a collective performance of the sun’s light culminating at sunset.

FLOW FIELDS PERFORMANCE
Hear the Clound is a performative object, seemingly formed like a floating cloud along the wall of the courtyard. As time passes, it gradually expends its structure and generate sound which is a translation of invisible particles surrounding us. It explores the realm of light and air and transforms into shape and sound.
Touch the Sound! is a performative lab whereby sound is activated by magnets. The sound sources generate interaction amongst the visitors, who then become part of the performance in the space. As pre-recorded sounds highlight the old memory of the courtyard, new memories of the Palace are recreated through reiterations and translations.
Flow Fields culminates its finale performance with the voices of children singing the harmonies of sunlight. It then leads visitors into a spectacular collective performance of live sounds and dance by New Collective Movement and Distractfold Ensemble highlighting Lisbon’s radiant sunset and finally creating an atmospheric experience of light projections throughout the whole palace courtyard.

PARTY AT THE PALACE
This is the culmination of every element present within the courtyard that brings the visitors into a harmonious experience of sound, light, movement and interactive navigation as they explore different parts of the courtyard.

The students will follow up with detailed plans, schedules beginning of next week. ----------------------------Flow Fields by AAIS // Courtyard The area towards the back-side of the courtyard starting from the two trees as the front of our working-area will be our playing-field where a number of activities will unfold over the period of Thursday 12 - Sunday 15. // Programming The courtyard will have a permanent sound // music programming that is activated several times a day by dance and musical performances (acoustic | electro-acoustic | electronic). In between moments of ‘activation’ the courtyard-stage is used a loungearea concentrating on the four corners where (partial) shade is provided by some domesegments that function as placeholders for the stage itself. Food will be integrated. // Labs Several workshop-structured activities or ‘Labs’ will be organised that generate perfor mative input through working with memory | palace-as-former-school | refraction of light | interactive sound-generation | etc. These activities all available for free for the public will inform our stage with newly generated ‘culture’ that together with our ‘space’ will create ‘place’. // Facilities AAIS will arrive with 5 students // 5 tutors // 5 musicians and 5 international and local dancers coming in from the 2nd of September. We will be largely self-organizing and independent in our activities. Detailed programming and technical and organisation details will be provided next week by the students. ---------------------------------------------------------I hope this gives you a bit of an idea toward which direction we are heading. We are very excited to be able to operate within the framework of the triennial and look forward tremendously working close with you over the next 8 weeks. Please let me know if you have any pressing issues. With all the very best regards, Allard

Yes we can discuss the best way to promote the 2013 AAIS Flow Fields, and your idea is interesting but in another way. At 16 September we’ll probably do not have the 4th floor free to use (under your idea) so it would be important to know exactly your idea (day, number of participants). Depending on the mention, we’ll do it in the RLG or we could divide the event in two areas: I’ll wait for your information to continue on the definition of the event Prepare a work presentation with an evening cup and Dinner in another place of Lisbon presented by a recognise chef .. with an magnificent view to the river Tejo. Artur Silva ______________ Let me first introduce myself – I am Sue Jan, from the AAIS team. As you mentioned in your previous email, the RLG will not be available to be used on the 16th of September. After much discussion with our team, we would like to propose that we could possible hold a performative dinner at the courtyard of the Palace Headquarters of the Architecture Triennale. The reason being for this proposal is a) It could be a great synergy not just between AAIS and Roca Lisbon, but also connecting and networking Roca with the Architecture Triennale network. b) As a majority of our events and installations will be situated in the Palace courtyard, It would be a creative way to setup a dinner within the installations itself and create an exciting environments with all the elements at hand. As this will be the final day of our event at the Triennale, the dinner also could be a way to celebrate and bring together all the network of people to enjoy a time together, at the same time allow for future collaborations to be discussed and formed.
PRESS KIT | FLOW FIELDS LONDON & MADRID
FLOW FIELDS Flow Fields is a multi-sensory experience through sound, movement and space that focuses on the journeys of water. The AAIS program will aim to blur boundaries between body and space with experiential form, live sound-scape composition, interactive projection performance, culinary arts and dining experience. From the first iteration at Roca Gallery in London, the studio expands the project to Madrid’s Contemporary Arts Centre Matadero from the 6th-9th June 2013 and continues its evolution at the Lisbon Architectural Triennale from 11th September until 15th December 2013.

FLOW FIELDS LISBON ARCHITECTURE TRIENNALE
This multi-sensory installation that centers on and irradiates out from the movement of water, offering programming that plays on the relationship between the body, music, and image. A permeable and mobile form inhabits Nave 16 Matadero, acting as a live landscape where performances, culinary workshops, musical sessions are planned, where the public will become an integral part of the events. In May, Flow Fields occupied the Roca Gallery London, designed by Zaha Hadid in London, before coming to Matadero in June. This autumn, it will be presented at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale, September 11, 2013.

Helen Fitzgerald (mail@helenfitzgerald.com.au) Monday, 5 Aug, 2013 9: 04 AM Joe Walkling (mail@joewalkling.com); Mauricio Pauly (mauricio.pauly@gmail.com)
Hi Joe & Mauricio, Could you please let us know what dates NMC and DFE will be in Lisbon? ______________ Hi Helen I will arrive on Tuesday 10, with the others arriving Wednesday Joe Walking ______________________ All Df’s will arrive on the afternoon of the 12th (Rod, Richard, Linda at 14:00, Emma at 16:00, Alice not sure but sometime that day) and depart the 16th I think the second option is preferable - given that there will be no other rehearsal and that the 12th is the arrival day, with some of them landing at 16:00, i.e. making it to the place probably an hour or two later. That being said, a perf on the 12th is perhaps workable, on a different scale and not involving those arriving late. We had been told performances were on the 13th and 14th, has this changed? M __________________________ Cool. As I said, on the 12th a group can be on site (fresh of the plane) by like 16:00 and the complete group by like 18:00. Once they are in Lisbon they are available - including Sunday the 15th. __________________________ Hi all : If DF are not arriving until the afternoon of the 12th then I would like to steer clear of any performance this day as I think the time could be more effectively used as rehearsal. I would also suggest that if we are to do a performance on Sunday that it would be early afternoon as I’m not sure of the other NMCs work commitments on Monday and when they would need flights back. Helen: would it be good if I came into the AA tomorrow afternoon to do some testing for your new prism idea? Joe x ___________________________

Hie Theo, i hope you saw the email from Ines of ROCA who is in place of Artur as he is not in Lisbon currently. so far the possible dates for the dinner are : 12th Sept, Thursday - chef available, NMC & DFE available (arriving by 6pm) OR 14th Sept, Saturday - chef NOT available NMC DFE available OR 15th Sept, Sunday - chef NOT available, NMC NOT available, DFE available. 12th seems like the best dates as everyone from the network is present. however, it will be the opening night of Triennale week - hence everyone might still be occupied with work for the next few days. thoughts? Sue Jan ______________ Hi Sue Jan, Well, I don’t know what the latest on all other plans are now that you discussed with Beatrice etc. we definitively should be at the opening. You all should mingle with people there to create new networks. If the events don’t last long that might be an option. If the events take place Friday I guess only Saturday makes sense, as at least all of us are there. But if we have events on Saturday instead as I heard was discussed it might be difficult too.., On order for us to really know what’s best we need to get the final agreed schedule with TRIENNALE. Would be nice if they could join us too for the dinner and that would obviously make 12th impossible
