London
22. April 2013 The first event will establish the dynamics of the year. It will be the first experiment on how the concept of the individual works collaborates and produce a practical outcome to apply the concept to the actual event. At the London venue we test and verify the networks, ideas and frameworks of the year. In this salon like setting a series of installations, talks and workshops will take place. Here we can rely on the wide and established network of creatives and architects of the AAIS and the overall Architectural Association. As this first ephemeral event will in major parts rely on virtual and audio visual installations and spatial transformations we could imagine the London Roca gallery as the venue. The Roca Gallery in London could be the ideal venue to introduce the wider programme, test initial ideas and organise talks, workshops and performances in relation to the following events.
Matadero Madrid
Opening first week of June 2013 (TBC) In this second event, the AAIS aims to produce a wider platform that brings together existing disciplines with the local platforms of Madrid together in a set of spatiotemporal arrangements. The second event expands the visitor engagement of the London event and adapts it’s parameters to the cultural context or environment of the Matardero, Madrid.
Photo Helenwith Fitzgerald During the by meeting Manuela Villa and Olivia Rico on the 20th of November, we agreed to have long-standing external installations on the Matadero Plaza that invites people to experience, dwell and engage. This installation will be initially introduced at the beginning of June 2013, but will remain in place until the end of summer when they will move on to Lisbon. Matadero’s platform will consist of a series of experiences and activities that can transform the Plaza Matadero into a creative source. These experiences and activities range from installations, performances, to urban picnic settings as well as panel discussions hosted by the local institutions and artist. The Roca Gallery could be an ideal virtual extension to the events that take place at the Matadero. On the screen could run recordings and live feeds of the events, before, during and after the event. Several of the events could be co-hosted by Roca.
Lisbon Triennial
Opening 11th of September 2013 Photo by Young Eun Kim Similar to the Matadero event, the Lisbon event will gather and expand the engagements of the visitors and adapt this continuous transformation to the cultural environment of Lisbon. This time, the platform is also framed by a series of performance and workshops that co-relates to the Lisbon Triennale theme of Close, Closer.
The AAIS installations will be transformed to be the external installations at the headquarter of the Lisbon Triennial. The initial 5 days (11-16th of September) will be programmed by the AAIS. After this the platform again can be taken over by local initiatives and the general public. We can expose here the various after effects and feedback that can be created from the experience of three events. The AAIS also questions how these series of ephemeral events can create a momentum, lasting networks of collaboration and continuous exchange.

Dear Sara, We have develop further our designs and right now, we would like to ask you a few questions related to building materials and equipment for the production of the project. 1 Cork Material : we are hoping to get sponsorship for cork and fabric (perhaps you could help us ask to what extend are they willing to help us in this area?) a) what is the biggest size for that big cork sample that we can get from Amorim? b) what is the standard way of working with the cork, for example - can we use the tool to drill a hole on the cork? 2 Fabric from Bordalima : We were also wondering whether it is available to get some fabric. this is for the costume and structural part of our design. 3 Material & Equipment : Could you provide some information for the filming equipment and projectors? here is the list of equipment we require : a) 4 projectors (3 at least) b) 5 mini Mac (3 at least) + 1 speaker set d) 1 microphone + extension cables f) 13 to 15 microspots for singing + A 24 channels receiver h) 8 instrument microphones for the musicians i) High quality amplifiers and speakers for chamber music

28 FEBRUARY 2013 . THURSDAY email. review of progress . theo lorenz Dear all, It is quite apparent that there is some confusion or anxiety within the studio. That’s why I think it is necessary to summarise the status quo of this years project from our perspective and try to ‘re’-motivate you a bit with this. Of course there are still a lot of open questions and solutions to be found, however I think there is a very good base for the starting point that can develop throughout the year. 1 it is important to have good ‘seeds’ but to be aware that not all can be done at once already for the London event. 2 The overall concept of flow fields and gradients developing seamless over the three locations has the potential to become one of the most exciting projects the AAIS Nevertheless big ambitions have always as well a greater risk. 3 In my opinion you found a base geometry (triangles and hexagons as fields) that has the potential to be very exciting and embed all the important performative aspects 4 The main structure is still unresolved but between the to basic ideas (many poles/ space frame) we will find the fitting solution. 5 the non physical tasks that will need continued work (sound environment, projections, food, choreography, event organisation and talks etc...) These are as important, if not even more, than the mere physical elements. In the overall we want you to motivate each other and not demotivate. Believe in the potentials and grab the initiative to make the impossible possible. It will be very hard and exhausting work but I hope it will be worth it!

01 MARCH 2013 . FRIDAY testing and prototype of structure
01 MARCH 2013 . FRIDAY meeting with steve webb about engineering of the structure Dear all, Steve Webb agreed to see you today at his office @ 5pm. Webb Yates Engineers, 23-24 Smithfield Street, London EC1A 9LF T: 020 7489 0900 E: info@webbyates.co.uk
Dear all, As I just discussed with Lynette and Sue Jan on Skype an interesting solution might be in creating layers that all together form the flow in different strata The main structure (low or high) might be a simple grid shell (there might be more options like nets etc. you can discuss with Steve this afternoon).
01 MARCH 2013 . FRIDAY email . fridat 01 march 2013 . 4.56pm . theo lorenz
GRID SHELL if you use the section points of this shell as a pendulum point you could create a outer layer of reflectors (the field seen from above) and a covered layer of fabrics underneath. on the low fields the lower layers become just weights (sand back etc) and the fabric is continued in the other elements such as chairs/table and costumes. In this way the fields would not be stiff any more but could behave like dynamic flow files. They could be in parts connected to have a ripple effects in connection to the performance tracing etc. and top and low layers stand always in a dynamic relation.
ITERATION OF GRID SHELL In this solution the grid shell would be less dominant as it is one of three layers and is never an outside layer. Please find attached a second sketch that might show better the relation of the various layers. we could aim to have only one simple high structure for london with more low grids and furniture and then erect more of them to high structures in madrid and in lisbon..
BAMBOO MATERIAL in regards to bamboo, Mable (laser cutting company) explained to me that one should soak them before use so they become flexible, and during that process they could be varnished as well in different colours. please research what methods might work here.

Helen’s example : unpredictable elements of nature highlights (artificial vs natural) highlights (predictable vs. unpredictable) in between states : a dancer’s movement comes in contact with the unpredictable movement of the cloth. Young’s example : going throuhg different areas in the space highlights (clarity vs. confusion) highlights (body space vs. arch. space) in between states : the dancers transforms from a arch space and structure to a bodily space of human and costume
Theme : storyline behind Flow Fields and Blurring Boundaries [ food ] Purpose : create awareness of perception + creating common grounds [ social ] TO DO! Email Olivia Rico @Matadero about food programme + press release Essay writing : processes - how culture is transform by food back and forth between each state of transformation : how one reinforces the other

OVERALL FEEDBACK 1. Specific experience : gives a bigger impact compared to too many things 2. Setting design rules : any design should have two different functions : choose always to team up with someone so that ideas keep merging
3. Water as an ingredient : dilution - making things merge together 4. Transformative sate / function : danger! dont let it be an obkect! 5. Lisbon : becomes an atmosphere : dilution of what was in London eg. food not being able to be eaten but only smelt and felt as an atmosphere. 6. How do you represent one thing as two at the same time? 7. Needs to link more between each event : 3 acts but highlighted in different ways 8. It doesnt always have to be THIS or THAT : in between states
dining experience feedback & guides 1. careful not to leave VIP guest unfed : needs to be concrete 2. storyline of the food : “lets you live, yet it can kill you 3. possibly to invite Mauricio V. to sing between dishes : becomes the link 4. requires aa detailed choreography of the whole night - minute to minute
19 MARCH 2013 . TUESDAY email . tues 19 march 2013 2.46pm. grace hall roca
Hi All, Eva & I have been discussing your programme of events and we have some feedback/questions for you: AAIS Setup - 22.04.13 - 26.04.13 The dates you have proposed for this are fine. Please note our working hours are 9am - 5:30pm so all work will need to be carried out during these hours. We would prefer if everything could please be installed by Friday as Saturdays are generally quite busy. Open Rehearsals - 30.04.13 Can you please confirm the times for this? Can we suggest from 1pm - 5pm? We have an event during this evening so we will need everything to be finished and packed up by 5:30pm to allow us time to get ready for this. + Will you be serving any food or drink during this time? + Will you require anything from our staff throughout the rehearsal? Opening Night - 02.05.13 can you please confirm the times for this event? We would suggest 7pm - 9pm, however if you feel you need the extra half an hour to have time for the performance and eating experience we could start at 6:30pm? How many people are you aiming for/how many can you afford to cater for? Have you included wait staff, and glass hire in your budget? Roca can provide the wine for this event, however food will need to come out of the budget. Salon Talk - 03.05.12 Can you please confirm the times for this talk? Roca will provide wine/crisps for 40 people Wait staff will need to come out of your budget / provide staff to serve drinks Performative Night - 04.05.13 We can’t host this event on the Saturday evening - we will need to find an alternative date. We thought it could move to the 15th and we could have two nights of performances? Open Design Day - 07.05.13 and Performative Night - 09.05.13 Can this event merge with the performative night on Thursday the 9th? Can you please have a think about the new format which combines the two and send us the new proposal? Please also include times, number of people, what you need form us etc. AAiS Workshops - 10.05.13 / 11.05.13 / 13.05.13 Can you please confirm the time you will require the meeting room for? We can’t host any activities on the Saturday or Monday Design Workshop - 14.05.13 / 15.05.13 Can you please confirm the time you will require the meeting room for? As I suggested, the 15th would be a better date to host the Distractfold Ensemble so we it would be best to cut the Design Workshop back to one day only. Performative Night - 16.05.13 Can you please confirm times? How many people are you expecting? Can you please confirm who will pay for the alcohol/wait staff/glass hire? Will this be the dance companies? Hopefully this all makes sense and is clear enough, but please do feel free to give me a call in the gallery to discuss. Also, could you please send over to us your budget and the presentation from last week.

22 MARCH 2013 . SATURDAY development of food brief for culinary experience
// FOOD BRIEF FOR DINING EXPERIENCE Possible themes for dining experience related to Flow Fields 1. Impact of water on food + allowing water to dilute or mix other food particles + water allows mixture but maintaining its own essence + show hydration and dehydration of food 2. Stages of water and its transformative qualities + raw form (solid) + cooked (liquid) + digested (gas/evaporation) 3. Storyline of transition of body moving in and out of water (a day at the ocean) + anticipation - preparation (to climatize people) - teaser snacks and drinks - apperitives + first surprise - something you expect in, - a normal dish you expect but with a twist. + ending - dish to evoke memories - eg. dish served as a salad, left quarter of it + becomes a garnish for the soup dish
