Katie Wade COP 3 PROPOSAL

Ques%on 1: What is Good? -‐ To what extent does Social Responsibility impact on the role and func>on of Illustra>on?

For my Cop 3 I want to explore the role of eccentric creative individuals within society by looking at how their decisions and pieces of work impact society and whether the creative sector as a collective has a moral responsibility to challenge the normal in to change the course of history/ continue to develop society order as a whole. To explore this I will research into a select few famous works of art, literature and film (specifically I want to focus on cult films and artistic films that made into mainstream media) created by creatives who were outcasts in their time and assess the impact their work had on society, both at the time of their release and if/ how/why it has shaped society over time and if it is still relevant today. I will also delve into how creative/illustrators are represented within society and whether or not more extreme ‘outcast’ creatives make a lasting impact. By looking into attitudes towards them over a variety of mediums (newspaper, radio, online) and see if being more outwardly weird works in our favour or not. Looking into how the older generation views creativity as a skill in comparison to other more academic skills and if/where attitudes in media are changing towards becoming a creative in this day and age (for example, the acceptance of art festivals, mainstream art websites such as etsy and pinterest, whether this is encouraging people to be creative or classing art as a hobby and undermining the real creatives in the industry). Overall whether a creative could be called a strong contributing factor to modern day society's development and how they shape the current social economic climate in contrast to other more academic individuals.
