A COP PRESENTATION: My Thought Process A REALLY long complicated thought journey
Katie Wade
THE BEGINNING To what extent does social responsibility impact on the role and function of illustration?
how the creative sector challenges the norms of society through film and illustration <Is there an acceptance or legacy of the extreme or weird in the mainstream>

CHANGING DIRECTION
Researched for a week but realised it stepped too far away from what I was interested in so I went back to COP 2 (representation of A.I in films) it started me thinking about representation in the Female film industry? Representations
Lack of racial variety in films: white washing in the Hollywood
Oscars are predominately won by white straight males. Emmys are more diverse. Why?
Can society break away from the white heterosexual males mindset?
Backlash against John Boyega for being a black male leading role
No backlash against Alexander Skaagard for being a white male (in Tarzan… )
Females are given overly sexualised side roles; Harley Quinn, Black Widow. Is this because of artists? Or because of directors?
“Becoming a man is a active process requiring some physical or sexual prowess on the part of the subject. Becoming a woman, in contrast, is a passive process” Started to investigate where this was most prominent: Horror// Thriller Films
I found a lot of research suggesting that females are simply a narrative tool for their male leads. This interested me so I decided to carry this on.

EXPLORATION INTO HORROR
What really changed the research for me, was the introduction to two different games.
“Inside ”
“Until Dawn”
It started me wondering, does horror effect men and women in different ways and if so, are films tailored towards a certain gender?

PLANNING THE PROJECT
I mind mapped my thoughts and potential questions, I then went through each question individually and assessed the merit of the question, why I was interested, if it was researchable and what was it’s purpose. I also made small lists underneath of potential practical's that could coincide with the questions.

WHERE I AM NOW I haven’t yet defined the title the basic gist of it will be thriller/horror movies angled genders fears and what are devices employed to do so?
properly but “Are certain a particular the creative
The next step for me will be researching further into this topic, collecting quotes and choosing a set number of texts as examples to refer back to in the essay. The potential practical to come from this is a proposal for a gender tailored/ individually tailored video game, this would contain a set number of landscape proposals, character designs and possibly audio recordings (the essay will inform me of what creative devices to use etc) that would presented in the form of an exhibition? This is only a first initial thought.
