Welcome to the first edition of 2018 Suhail, our group’s family magazine. At the outset, I would like to convey my warmest regards and wishes to all of you and your family for a successful year. All of you know that 2017 was a tough year as we saw significant drop in our sales and revenue. While it can be partly attributed to downturn economy, the hard fact is that we haven’t put in the best efforts on our own sales and business development front. Despite being in such situation, we have begun 2018 with renewed promises. We have signed up with Granlund, a Finland-based global company specializing in energy saving technology for buildings. We have successfully completed and handed over the Oman National CORS Network Project in which Bahwan Projects and Telecom has installed 37 remote GPS stations across Oman for the Ministry of Defence. We also became one of the key sponsors of the prestigious Mars Mission Project in Oman. Last but not the least, we sent 50 of our employees to Kuwait to join other fans to support the national team in the finals of the Gulf Cup in which Oman won the coveted trophy.

Working in legal affairs requires focus and accuracy. Since Legal Affairs is responsible for the group’s all kinds of legal issues, we need intensive training courses to be up to date. In fact, I want to attend law training courses because the department needs someone who is knowledgeable about laws pertaining to our businesses.

What is your ambition in life … future plans? My ambition in life is to complete my studies and get a bachelor’s degree in law as I am fond of this subject and want to gain extensive knowledge. Secondly I want to move up in my career. Everyone in my department encourages me and supports me. I would like to take an active part in the company and gain skills that would benefit our company and my colleagues at work.

How have your parents influenced your life / career? Parents have great influence on the lives of their children. My parents help me a lot with their advices such as not to be lazy and I also ensure to complete my studies. May God have mercy on my father. My mother always prays for me, and I ask God to provide her with health and wellness.

How do you spend your leisure time? I go for regular walk during the days of the week; and on holidays I go out with my family and sometimes with my friends for hiking. Shopping and going to cinema are also my other favourite pastime.

requirements. In this business, customer retention is the biggest challenge as many new competitors are entering the market on regular basis.

Any suggestions to improve the work environment at SBGH Since learning is a continuous process, sales people should be given regular training in-order to keep them abreast of the latest developments in the field. Since there is tough competition in the market we need to improve the visual display of products in our showrooms as our rivals have better display of products. This I feel is a setback for our business to prosper. Since construction scenario is changing rapidly we also should adopt ourselves to these changes so that we give tough competition in the market. Timely availability of materials and services like delivery should also be improved. Since ‘Bahwan’ is a household name, the brand needs to be made more visible everywhere in the market.

What is your ambition? I will continue working hard and aim to scale new heights in my professional graph. I also want to provide quality education to my children so that they become independent in their lives. I want to give them best things in life. To achieve this I am working hard.

How your parents have influenced you in life? They are instrumental in shaping my personality and I am very thankful for having such a wonderful parents. I owe everything to my parents for what I have achieved till date in my life.

How do you spend your leisure time? I like to spend quality time with my family during my leisure and holidays. I also take time off to read magazines and books to keep myself updated about local and global events. I ensure to take my family on a vacation once in a year.

There must be encouragement to push the Group to be one of the leading establishments in Oman and make employees love their work because it provides them with everything they need. This is the only suggestion I ask officials to consider.I am proud of what I have accomplished until now, while the credit goes back to the group.

What is your ambition in life ‌ future plans? I hope to complete my studies in the field of management to develop my skills and also gain more experience. After completing the study my goal is to reach higher positions in the company. I would like to become an active part of the company and acquire skills that helps the company and my colleagues at work.

How have your parents influenced your life / career? There is no doubt that parents have a great influence on their children. They are the first and primary supporters for them. Their continued support has made me reach where I am now. I have learnt a lot from my father, who is no more with us. My mother always prays for me, and I ask God to provide her with health and wellness.

How do you spend your leisure time? I spend most of my time in my farm as I love camel farming. As for my hobbies, I am fond of scuba diving. I love shooting sport as well and in fact I have achieved top positions in this sport. I do not forget to devote a large part of my time to my family as well.

Role of Facilities Management in

Environmental Performance of Buildings Anil P Kumar, General Manager, Bahwan International Properties LLC

In simple terms, Facilities Management (FM) is primarily concerned with short-term management of operations and maintenance of buildings, precincts and its community infrastructure. However in recent years the environmental performance of buildings has become a major focus point in facilities management. It not only impacts the residents but also other people’s lives and the health of the planet. Sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR), are now significant factors pushing for better environmental standards. Businesses, organizations and consumers are including sustainability in their buying decisions. The social, environmental and economic benefits are driving FM to adopt a holistic, sustainable approach to their discipline. Although the role of FM includes, but not limited to, maintenance of building engineering equipment and cleaning, it plays a major role in fighting climate change and delivering sustainable economy. FM not only makes a positive impact on public health and the environment, it also reduces operating cost, enhances building and organization marketability, increases occupant’s productivity, and helps create a sustainable community.

businesses are being judged on anything from e-waste disposal and safety standards to their carbon emissions. These developments highlight the increasingly important role that sustainability plays within the FM industry. Green building, or sustainable design, is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings and their residents use energy, water and materials, as well as reducing impacts on human health and the environment for the entire lifecycle of a building. Real estate owners are amplifying the sustainability of their properties by embracing LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certifications. Regardless of the above categories, facility managers should use LEED or various other approaches to attain environmental sustainability and achieve one common goal i.e. to integrate environmental consideration into facilities management.

As the green building sector grows exponentially, progressive facility managers look for ways to manage the environmental issues of their properties. They try to manage natural resources without compromising the ability of future generations to use the same natural resources. There are specific environmental goals, such as storm water management, reduction of use of water, construction waste management, and indoor chemical and pollutant source control. The new ISO 26000 standards comes at a time when January-March 2018 | Issue 16
