It Runs In The Family As the sixth child out of ten, Mr. Somchai Chupukcharoen never thought he would someday carry huge responsibilities on his shoulders and look after his father’s factory. Mr. Somchai’s father founded the factory about 60 years ago. Now the factory manufactures machine parts and metal parts for motorcycle. When Mr. Somchai was younger he helped operate some of the machines inside the factory. That’s when a terrible accident occurred causing him to loose portions of his index and middle finger. After that his parents forbid him and his siblings from working with the machines. But thanks to today’s technology machines are now equipped with sensors. No worker had been in an accident since. After his father grew old with age he retired from his manager position. He wanted to pass the factory down to a male successor. Since the eldest son went to manage a branch factory and the next four were daughters – it came to the sixth child and second eldest son – Mr. Somchai. He now owns the factory with more than 60 workers and over 100 machines. His father passed away in 2005. He works to support ten other family members including his mother, siblings, children and nephews. Even though he faces many obstacles and tough economic issues, he is still very happy to keep the family business going. And one day he hopes that his son would take after him and continue the business.
Right Here Right Now This is my precious factory, welcome. Mr. Somchai standing proudly in his beloved factory. The colours on the floor really helps create a focus point leading towards him.
He was A Great Man Mr. Somchai at the dining table, behind is his father’s portrait. I tried to get him as close to the portrait as possible, but it was so high up. I like how he is looking towards the light it seems as though he hasduties to do.
Make That Two This is the best picture I could get of his missing fingers. It was a sensitive subject for him so I did not want to bother him about it. Sometimes I feel like he knew I was taking pictures of his fingers because he would hide them.
Spinning In Line The more I walk around this factory the more I realised how colourful it is. These are the template stamping machines, each has different template.
Fabricate A worker assembling metal parts. She was working quite fast that most of the pictures I had of her had blurred hands.
Ready To Go Products checked then packed ready to be delivered. I combined these two pictures because one it is a sequence shot, two because the colours looked nice together.
Creative Thinking Time Mr. Somchai at his office with all his documents. Where he does his researches on products and marketing.
What Was That Again? Every few hours Mr. Somchai would walk around the factory talking to workers and checking on things. This is a room where the machine checks the measurements of metal parts.
Family Portrait Some members of Mr. Somchai’s family. From left to right, Leng (Mr. Somchai’s youngest nephew), Ms. Laddawan (his youngest sister who looks after the factory’s finance), Ms. Nongnuch (the fourth eldest sister), Zong (Leng’s older brother), Mr. Somchai, his mum, Ms. Kornkanok (the second eldest sister), his sister-in-law (Leng and Zong’s mum).
It Runs In The Family, Hopefully Mr. Somchai’s son, Ball. Who he hopes will continue the family business. His son is currently studying in a university.
