The current World is Babel of interrelated sets of niche situations, infinite micro-events and local stories that compose a universe of relations that are more and more complex, influencing major events in an unpredictable way. Filters are required in order to connect them each other to carry out trends and control the evolution of phenomena. From the body of knowledge of Research several tools can be sourced and applied as filters to give meaning to the complexity of the reality and, consequently, to aid decision makers in formulating goals, or to provide a support for examining the potential effectiveness of the creative proposals. Research tools can be qualitative or quantitative; both of them meet the aim to summarize large amounts of data, information, and facts without reducing objectives, values and intentions. The former concentrates on words and observations to express reality and attempts to describe people in natural situations. In contrast, the quantitative approach places considerable trust in numbers that represent opinions or concepts.

Design Research at “Salone Del Mobile” 2013 The aim of this workshop is essentially methodological: to provide the appropriate set of tools to lead a Research as a crucial step of the Design process. Insights are extracted from an accurate collection of samples from which changes and tendencies can be forecasted and by translating this data into a strategic advice as a decision-making support for designers and creative innovators in order to modify companies’ products, services, practices and business models accordingly. During this workshop the “Salone del Mobile” 2013 taken as field of observation and testing for the initial questions and hypothesis.

Company Mondadori, one of the major brands of publishing in Italy, will be the partner of this workshop with the Interior, Architecture and Design magazines to evaluate the products that they are use to publish for the occasion of the Salone del Mobile and to share with them the outcomes of the workshop, especially those coming from the sections “human experience” and “product reality”.
