Best enjoyed in a cozy spot with your favorite beverage. (and a furry animal or two curled up in your lap)
Where did I leave you? Oh yes, I was standing in the midst of December bliss, sketching beams of morning yellow light coming through the juniper tree just outside my kitchen window. Chocolate chip cookies were baking in the oven, the ones that called for dried cranberries and walnuts and dear friends over coffee or tea. Winter peace was settling in. Interludes of quiet time are essential to our lives if we are to be productive. I am a big fan of ‘productive.’ My winter agenda... less computer, more reading. My little dogs liked to hear that, since sharing my lap to nap while I read is their favorite pastime. My winter book... “A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are~ One Thousand Gifts” by Ann Voskamp. She too, wishes to live the life that God has given her well and to the fullest. “How,” she wondered, “do we find joy in the midst of deadlines, debt, drama and daily duties?” This is my winter lesson. And spring, summer and fall. Thankfulness and counting gifts is the way to joy. Ann says, “There is a way to live the big of giving thanks in all things. It is this: to give thanks in this one small thing. The moments will add up.” In this contemporary, techo world of connectedness, we rarely go anywhere without our cellphones, ipods or laptops. We may have become slaves to the very machines that were created to simplify our lives. God must have known how difficult of a task it would be for us to learn to redeem the time. He stresses in the Bible to “number our days” (PSALM 90:12) and reminds us how “short our time here is.” Limiting the flow of information into our lives in order to preserve our times of quiet, allows our eyes to catch the simple beauty in everyday life. A glimpse into heaven on earth. As I revisit my computer, in the still of this gray January hibernation, I’m struck with the disappearance of my three winter months. They have vanished one day at a time, sunrise to sunset. Before long, we will be drifting into the excitement of Wildwood Springtime. Our island comes back to life, in all colors. I am recharged, renewed and ready to bring you an abundance of Sun-drenched pages overflowing with all that is good in our little seashore town. Be a ‘tech-No’ and just say no. Disconnect, if just for a little while. Enjoy each moment for they will quickly become a memory. Count your blessings beginning with each grain of powdery white sand between your toes. And, in essence, don’t ever let the counting stop. *”For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.” (JAS. 4:14) Thank-full for Spring!

Bill Haley announcement at HofBrau 1953
Appearing at the Rip Tide
Wildwood in the summer, especially in the fifties and sixties, was the place to go to hear the best music. All the notable bands and singers could be found in at least thirty-one clubs located around Oak and Atlantic Avenues, each featuring a different headliner. When Bill Haley came to town with the Comets in 1954, he played at the Hofbrau Hotel, where they introduced “Rock Around the Clock.” That is now the site of the Beach Terrace Motor Inn where a marker has been placed on Atlantic Avenue to note that spot. Four other favorite clubs were the Martinique, the Oak Club, the Rainbow and the Fairview, which featured Sal Masie and the Untouchables. The Fifth Dimension appeared at the Hurricane, which is now the site of Luna on Pacific Avenue. Ginny Wood, a Wildwood native, loved to stop at “her three favorite clubs” in those days: Phil and Eddie’s on Schellenger near Atlantic, the Bolero and the Rip Tide. The entertainers would perform in Las Vegas in the winter and come to Wildwood in the summer. The Treniers: four brothers who sang, danced, and summered in the Wildwoods, recorded “Everything’s Wild in Wildwood”. And there was Freddie Bell and the Bellboys, Buddy Holly’s Crickets, The Drifters (“What A Wonderful World”, “Under The Boardwalk”, and “Take It Back!”), The Coasters (“Yackety Yack”), The Chantels, The Cadillacs, Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Dovells, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, the Platters (remember “Only You”, “Twilight Time”, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”, and “The Great Pretender”), The Shangri-Las, Joey Dee and the Starlighters ( “Peppermint Twist”), Tommy James and the Shondells, the Soul Survivors, the Turtles, the Beach Boy sound of “Help, Help Me Rhonda” and “California Girl”, and Frankie Avalon. “Performing in Wildwood during the 1960’s was a great thrill for all
of us,” says Ed Hickman of the Magnatones. “ From our start at the Emerald Room, all the way to Las Vegas and back again, it was a thrilling ride that could never be duplicated.” The Magnatones still play up and down the east coast, although there are a few new members. They played together at a Fifties Weekend reunion in Wildwood in 2006. The Magnatones originated in Gloucester City, New Jersey and all were in high school. They were taken under the wing of an exVaudevillian Tommy Tattler, who taught them how to be professionals which included how to enter and exit the stage, how to dress and how to dance. A future member of the group, Shawn Kelly, their lead singer, also taught them some “moves”. Tommy Tattler was the one who booked the Magnatones into the Emerald Room in Wildwood before any one in the group graduated from high school. The Emerald Room, a classy spot in Wildwood, was part of the Blackstone Hotel. The Magnatones appeared every summer, seven nights a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day, for eight years. Ed Hickman remembers that they celebrated the 16th birthday of Bobby McCann, the bass player at the time, in Wildwood. “We were so young! We couldn’t even drink in the bars that we played in”, says Ed. “Even in Las Vegas we had to be led by security up to the stage.” The current Magnatones are Ed Hickman on sax, Ed Gibson bass, Skip McCarty guitar, Billy Zane drums and the singer is Jimmy (Pasquarello) Anthony. Some of the old songs they like to play are: “Splish Splash”, “Bristol Stomp”, “Sixteen Candles”, and “In the Still of the Night”. Now many of these entertainers are coming back to Wildwood to perform during the Fabulous Fifties and Sixties Weekend. The first ever Wildwood Music Award, created by Paul Russo, owner of
Eddie Rossi and Phil Bonelli in front of Phil and Eddie’s Surf Club
Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor, was given to Charlie Gracie in 2004, a Philadelphia native. Charlie presented Chubby Checker with the second annual Wildwood Music Award in 2005. Since then there have been many artists who have received recognition: Dee Dee Sharp, The Comets, The Orlons, The Dovells, Ed Hurst, The Association, The Archies, The Monkees, Dick Clark’s Original Bandstand Dancers and many more. A walking tour map is being created by Paul Russo which will include all of the Wildwood’s historic musical venues made famous by those honored by the Wildwood Music Awards.
JACKIE HICKMAN’S
Chicken Cutlets Jackie Hickman whose husband Ed is part of the Magnatones, says this is an easy recipe and can be served with vegetables, used with pasta and sauce, on a sandwich or cut into strips and used in a salad.
1 lb. chicken cutlets 4 tbsp. mayo, light 4 tbsp. bread crumbs 4 tbsp. grated parmesan cheese Slice each cutlet vertically, so they will be thin. There will be about 6 slices. Spray a baking sheet with non stick spray. Lay the chicken cutlets on the baking sheet. Spread a layer of mayonnaise over the chicken. Then sprinkle a layer of bread crumbs over the top and finally a layer of parmesan over that. Bake uncovered for 1 1/2 hours at 250°. They should be nicely crispy on top and slightly browned. Check after an hour, they should be ready by then. Yield: 3-6 servings Thank you to Ed and Jackie Hickman, the Wildwood Historical Society, and Paul Russo for help with this article.

Purple Passion BY JESSICA WESTERLAND
Bobbilyn Bradley LOVES the color purple. This may seem like a very plain, or maybe odd way to start an article. You may be wondering, “What kind of beginning is this?” But honestly, any more adjectives, punctuation or supporting sentences would obscure the fact that is about to be conveyed to you. Bobbilyn Bradley LOVES the color purple! You may know her already, without knowing her name. If you walk into Shore Styles Salon on Park Boulevard, you will instantly know which station is hers. She has purple combs, brushes, signs, clock, q-tips, cottonballs, nail polish remover, hair spray, and bottles. She may be wearing her purple UGGs, purple leopard printed shirt, and have purple nails. She will probably be wearing purple jewelry and purple glasses. She could show you her purple piggy bank, purple marti gras mask, purple sunset photo, purple stuffed animals, and purple phone. You may have seen her driving around the island in her previous purple cars, or now in her green car with a completely purple interior from steering wheel cover and air freshener to seat covers. Yep. A lot of purple right? But how did this all start? Let’s start at the beginning. Bobbilyn was one of 6 children. She had 4 sisters and one brother, and out of them all she is the only one that fully inherited her mother’s fondness of the color purple. Perhaps it all started with her February birth...her birthstone is amethyst and she was brought home from the hospital wrapped in a purple receiving blanket! However it began, Bobbilyn has always loved purple, and started collecting at an early age. “My mom, [Bobbi Young] started to buy me things, and my sisters and friends would buy me stuff, purple shirts, purple earrings.” Over 30 years later, Bobbilyn is still in love with purple, both plain and patterned purple, as well as every shade and every hue. “As soon as I walk into a store it draws me right towards it. I find everything and anything [purple]. If I see it, I have to have it,” Bobbilyn laughed. “I will do anything to get it, even bribing someone for the shirt off their back!” Bobbilyn’s house also pays homage to her purple obsession. She has a purple couch, rugs, lamps, and bowls with purple potpourri in it. Her kitchen table set is purple, as is her microwave, toaster, toilet seat, VCR and laptop. Her dog wears a purple collar, as does her cat. One of the few non-purple items she has is her stove and refrigerator. However, she has her purple paint on hand to help her in these areas! Think that is a lot of purple? There is still more! Bobbilyn likes purple food as well, both naturally purple food like eggplant, and food not normally purple but oh yes it can be; like purple Oreos, butter, ketchup and icing. The only
purple food she doesn’t like, surprisingly, is grape soda and lollipops. “I even saved a purple bagel someone gave me; I left it in my refrigerator until it got all nasty!” Bobbilyn Bradley has been a hairstylist for 21 years, and her clients come in asking, “Can I have the purple girl?” They bring her purple gifts, from purses, gloves and toys, to purple electrical tape. They call her “Purple people eater, Barney, Purple Haze, and the Purple Ninja.” Her customers will come into the salon and wear purple, just for her. So not only does she just love the color, but she passes a little bit of that love to the people around her. Bobbilyn’s love of purple isn’t just a love of convenience; she goes to great lengths to get a hold of as much purple as possible! On one occasion, while she was cutting a man’s hair, she noticed a truck going by with a purple lounge chair in it. “I yelled ‘Oh my God, a purple lounge chair!’ And a lady [in the shop] went outside and yelled ‘Stop, Stop!’ to the truck.” The truck did indeed stop, and it turns out the chair was from a hotel and was on its way to be thrown out. So Bobbilyn saved her purple chair, and kindly the man whose hair she was cutting even offered to throw it in the back of his truck and drop it by her house for her. “It is an obsession, and a love,” Bobbilyn said. “It is a purple passion.” She doesn’t really like any other colors, and she doesn’t foresee her love of purple diminishing. Many people have loyalties. And lots of people collect things. But Bobbilyn Bradley is a loyal collector and appreciator, of purple.

Sun by-the-sea contributing writer, Jessica Westerland (far right), Captain of Poplar Ave. Beach Sweep for Clean Ocean Action in NJ poses with students from Wildwood High, who volunteered their time on October 23, 2010. Congratulations to Jessie Westerland & Kyle Mumford (pictured next to Jess) who were engaged on February 21, 2011 The Fall 2010 beach sweep had a great turnout and made a great conclusion to Clean Ocean Action’s 25th year of beach sweeps. The top items found were: Straws-=395 Caps/Lids= 283 Beverage/Soda bottles= 215 and Cigarette filters= 197 Of the 99 categories of trash listed on the cards, only 11 items were not found on Wildwood’s beach. The oddest things found were a rubber mat from a waterpark, a beach chair, a traffic cone, and a car panel. There were approximately 80 volunteers, who collected 45 trash bags of items. There were local couples, families, and students from Wildwood High School (Peer Leaders and ROOTS groups) All together, we collected approximately 3,453 pieces of trash! A big thanks to all the people who made it possible, and for such lovely weather! Hope to see you on Poplar Ave. beach bright and early April 23rd! When people think about Wildwood, most people picture the boardwalk, free beaches, and the night life. The one thing people don’t realize is that as wonderful as the boardwalk is, its close proximity to the beach also means a lot more trash and debris end up on the sands and in the water. For this reason, the Wildwood beach sweep is especially important, so we can help keep the beaches clean for many more great memories to be made. Wildwood has a large population in the summer, but during the rest of the seasons there are mostly only locals on the island. To see groups of locals come out to help their home, to help keep the environment that they enjoy everyday clean, makes me really proud. This past fall, out of the 94 different items listed on the trash item score cards, only 8 items were not found on our beach. It is shocking to realize how many different types of trash are found just within several blocks. When you think about how many different ways that trash can harm the balance of the sea and the creatures within it, it really lends a sense of importance to picking up trash off of the beach. It truly is the volunteers that make the beach sweep successful, and I am so thankful for everyone that comes out and helps keep Wildwood’s beaches beautiful and safe for marine life! ~Jessica Westerland

“If everyone just changes a few everyday habits, they can help make their environment a better one. Being “Green” and “eco-friendly” doesn’t have to be scary and take over your life. It can just be a small part of your life. The sea will thank you for it. Like E. E. Cummings said, ‘It is always ourselves we find in the sea.’” P.S. Freeman During the winter of 1974-75, my senior year at Wildwood High School, I had the honor and privilege of being a member of the varsity basketball team as the equipment manager. It was an exciting time at Wildwood High that year. Bernie McCracken was coming back to reassume the head coaching duties of the basketball team after a two-year hiatus. During his previous tenure he had won a handful of South Jersey titles and two state championships, so expectations were running high throughout all of Wildwood. Aside from being a knowledgeable coach, Bernie was a strict disciplinarian and he expected his players to be prompt and ready to practice at the assigned time. I once heard a player remark that, “if you were shooting around when he blew the whistle to start practice, he expected you to stop in midair.” In my capacity as manager I was also subject to the same code of discipline and I was more than willing to do what it took to help him maintain his winning program. Even if it was only to take the uniforms to get cleaned. “Here, take my car,” Coach McCracken said to me one afternoon. “Drop the uniforms off at Stokes’ Laundry and we’ll pick them up tomorrow.” Practice ended and I went home, ate dinner, did my homework, and then called my friend Dan. I was standing in the hallway by the kitchen, as far as the cord would reach (for all of you young readers, phones were attached to cords back then) when I stuck my hand in my pocket and came up with a strange set of car keys. All of the blood
drained from my head and I weakly blurted to Dan, “I gotta go!” I plotted my route while in full sprint to my car: Ocean Avenue all the way to Schellenger (no lights), to Atlantic, to Surf Avenue, to the McCracken house on 3rd Street. My assumption was that there shouldn’t be a police presence down by the beaches in the dead of winter, so I could keep my foot pinned the entire way. My mind’s eye showed the angry coach sitting in a dark, empty gym silently plotting my murder. I quickly decided to swing by the school just in case I could bail him out before he had a chance to put his plan into motion. Fortunately, the gym was dark so I turned back around and resumed my stealth route. At last I reached 3rd Street, pulled up to the house with a screech, bounded out of the car, and was met at the door by a smiling coach McCracken. “Coach, I am so sorry,” I sputtered. “Hey, Joe, it’s nice of you to remember me,” he said with a laugh. “Come on in and have a soda-pop.” I accepted his invitation with great relief. “You didn’t have to come up here,” he said. “Kitty picked me up.” I stayed for over one hour, shared a pop and some laughs over my absent-mindedness and then said goodnight. I returned to my car and found that it was still running with the driver’s door wide open. Then I drove home (within the speed limit).

Between the years of 1962 and 1976, we had a local publication called SHOUT. For those that don’t remember, it was a tabloid newspaper that showcased all the entertainment on the island. Within the past year or so, we were gifted with bound copies of the publication thanks to its publisher, Dennis Grant. It was our intention to have the papers scanned and put on a disk so that we would have a permanent record of this information for research purposes that would be available to our visitors. It took some time, but we were fortunate enough to find a few generous benefactors, and our project has almost reached fruition. In fact, I was in the middle of proofing the disk and it brought back such great memories. During the week of August, 1965, the Riptide Club booked “Mr. Rhythm and Blues himself, Fats Domino, plus the hilarious comedy team of Fisher and Marks.” The article went on say that “Fats, who composes many of his own hits, gets his titles from colloquial expressions such as ‘Ain’t That a Shame,’ ‘Poor Me’, and ‘I’m In Love Again.’ During that same week, the Surf Club booked Bobby Rydell. The SHOUT paper described him as a “fair-hair young star with a whiplash form and a lusty voice.” In another SHOUT issue, area historian, Charles V. Mathis said “Anglesea, with its acres of free parking, is still an after dark Mecca of the Jersey Cape.” He was told that “during prohibition, Anglesea was known as ‘Little Mexico.’ Things were so congenial that the police would escort imbibers home so no harm would befall them. Bud Moore laughingly recalls when Moore’s Inlet had break-away bars. These were broken down and trundled away when the police were en route. They were just as hurriedly reassembled when the ‘men in blue’ had departed.” Coincidentally, I just came
across an old postcard of Moore’s Inlet during the early 40s. It was a hotel and café, and in the rear of the establishment, it had a dock for deep-sea fishing boats. Also, I could not let this time go by without remembering “the lady of the house, ” Doris Moore, who passed away a few months ago. I have known Mrs. Moore for over 40 years, and always knew her to be of remarkable spirit, fabulous style, and the most beautiful smile. This fine lady will be sadly missed. A SHOUT article that caught my interest was “All Star Benefit Set Monday, August 17.” Making final arrangements were Msgr. M. Augustine Crine, Cozy Morley, Co-Chairwoman, Mrs. Peter Yecco, Mickey Shaughnessy and the Rev. Joseph F. O’Connell. It wasn’t until the early 80s that I became involved in that particular fundraiser along with some other hard-working ladies by the name of Dotty Ranisewski, Pat Callanan, and Diane Brannen. We were all officers of St. Ann’s PTA and it was our job to get this event together. It was held at Convention Hall. Cozy Morley hosted it for us for many years, and most of the entertainers that were appearing that week would dash over to the Hall and do part of their act during their intermissions. It drew lots of locals and summer tourists alike, and enabled our PTA to pay for such things as the black top in the school yard, the fence around the yard, and carpeting in the school. Of course, we always had our small children in tow, and it got to the point where Dotty’s youngest son and my daughter could do Cozy’s “shtick” without missing a beat. Hard work, but fun times and good memories! Until next time . . . . . be happy and be well!

Notre Dame de la Mer Seniors December 2010 ~ On the first Wednesday of every month the senior citizens group “Forever Young” of Notre Dame de la Mer Parish in the Wildwoods gather at the Knights of Columbus for a meeting, lunch and a movie, usually for a small fee. For December’s meeting, however, the seniors received a complimentary holiday treat from the Greater Wildwood Municipal Alliance who hosted the event. A lecture by Rev. Carrie Williams was presented to the group on How to Avoid Holiday Stress. The seniors were served a delicious lunch by Wildwood Catholic High School’s Peer Leadership students. Some of the other programs that the Greater Wildwood Municipal Alliance supports are DARE, After Prom Parties, People of Purpose, All Star Peers, Peer Leadership, which are programs that encourage students to pledge alcohol and drug free lifestyles and to provide community service projects, MMS Mentor/Buddy, Forest Friends/Sea Life which teaches resiliency, self-esteem and coping skills to kindergarteners. They are an organization that focuses on the prevention of substance abuse and has been in operation for 12 to 13 years. Statewide, they offer thousands of drug and alcohol prevention programs. The funding for these are derived from fines that are levied upon people convicted of drug offenses.

PREPARING FOR OPENING DAY
the Morey Way BY ALISON HELLER
“We will not be feeding our actors very much, so they should be in much fouler moods this season. In fact, ‘acting’ may be too strong a term for what they’ll be doing.
‘Dying to escape’ may sum it up better,” said O’Brien of his nearly undead crew.
As the sun slowly breaks through the seemingly eternal grey of winter, Wildwood residents rub their eyes and roll up their sleeves in anticipation of another wild season. Neon lights buzz then flare up island-wide. Ice cream trucks dust off their coolers and test their familiar jingles. Slowly, hotel pools all over town are prepped for cannonballs and splashing with refreshing chlorinated water. At Morey’s Piers, all levels of staff anticipate opening day. The Events Team began planning as soon as last season ended. They spent the off-season researching, planning and marketing. The Wild Half, a new half marathon event that takes runners 13.1 miles along the boardwalk and through the island to a beach finish, has been nearly two years in the making. “It takes a lot of coordination. The Wild Half runs through four cities and we needed approvals from five different municipalities, but we did it! Everyone is excited and ready to showcase the Wildwoods in a whole new way,” said Nick Lassor, Beach Sports Manager. Morey’s Piers also hosts the Beach Blast Soccer and Beach Lacrosse Tournaments. “With close to 20,000 people at the first soccer tournament alone, you can imagine how much planning it takes to organize and pull together all the resources to make it happen,” Lassor said. The Maintenance Department gets busy reassembling the rides. Freshly painted carousel horses leave their winter stables and are bridled back on their rotating platform. The

Giant Wheel, which looks like a wide mouth missing a few teeth over the winter, regains a refurbished grin. With the arrival of “it”, a new ride that will send guests spinning, swinging and soaring over 65 feet into the Wildwood sky, the maintenance crew has manuals to memorize and parts to assemble. Before “it” is ready for it’s maiden spin, they’ll know every piece of the ride inside and out and ensure it passes all inspections and meets the safety regulations. Ghost Ship Manager Terry O’Brien anticipates a more fully immersive experience for those brave enough to enter the Ignus Fatuus. With new visual affects, some physical changes to the ship itself, and the help of award-winning costume and make-up designers Keith Lambert and Ruby Muro, the Ghost Ship may be more about survival than entertainment. “We will not be feeding our actors very much, so they should be in much fouler moods this season. In fact, ‘acting’ may be too strong a term for what they’ll be doing. ‘Dying to escape’ may sum it up better,” said O’Brien of his nearly undead crew. Back at the waterparks, it requires 1.5 million gallons of water to ready all the slides and the thousand-foot stretch of each lazy river. “It takes almost a month to fill all the pools at both beachfront waterparks. The rivers alone take two or three days each to fill,” said George Rohman, Operations Manager at Ocean Oasis Waterpark and Beach Club. “And, of course, there are several hundred inner-tubes to inflate-and no, we don’t blow them up ourselves, fortunately! We use an air compressor.” Then there are the lounge chairs, trashcans and umbrellas to be cleaned, filtration and chemical treatment systems to be brought on line and, of course, thorough safety inspections before permits can be issued and the parks are ready for the public to enjoy. Maggie Warner, Operations Manager of Raging Waters Waterpark looks forward to filling the roster with a new and diverse team of lifeguards, guest services associates and park services staff. “As long as Mother Nature does her part this summer, we vow to do our part in creating a fun and unique experience in an exceptionally clean and safe environment,” said Warner. The entire staff at Morey’s is excited for an incredible 2011 season packed with old traditions and new additions. “I’m looking forward to seeing the boardwalk full of lights, sounds and people,” said Lassor. “It’s been a long winter!”

~The Shark
Come and get your... After months of preparation, Tony Luke’s owners Nicky Luke and Mike Vicario didn’t know what to expect when they finally opened their doors that chilly Black Friday morning. It was the off-season, when large gatherings aren’t typically expected in our tranquil hamlet. It was also the day after Thanksgiving, the feast of all holidays. Turkey Day has nothing on Tony Luke’s, apparently, because after months of shore lovers anticipating the best Philly style cheese steaks and roast pork sandwiches, the lines were naturally wrapped around the corner of SweetBriar and New Jersey Avenues in Wildwood Crest. The friendly staff, including their hardworking Shark friend, happily served a famished steady stream of customers from early morning that typical- holidayshopping day, until their fresh-baked rolls ran out around 4 PM. Selling out on their first day prompted Nick and Mike to remain open all winter long, a decision a hungry group gratefully approved. Fortunately, their satisfied off-season crowd has prepared them for the upcoming season, when they’ll be serving their award-winning sandwiches every day, all summer long! ~MEG CORCORAN FOR THE SUN

The party began Friday, October 22, 2010 at 3PM. The 1960 Wildwood Catholic High School graduating class began to get reacquainted. We were celebrating our 50th Class Reunion and it was going to last the entire weekend. Montego Bay, North Wildwood, offered the perfect venue. As each classmate came into the Hospitality Suite they were greeted with hugs and handshakes. Food and drink flowed; singing, dancing and laughing was the order of the day. Later that night we all went to the Beef and Beer, then it was back upstairs to our Hospitality Suite. We were having a ball!! Saturday dawned sunny and warm so after breakfast many strolled the boardwalk, beach and watched the ocean. For some it had been a long time since they had enjoyed that view and experienced the feeling of sand between their toes. That afternoon we met on the steps of our Alma Mater for our group picture. Fond memories were shared as we recalled our class picture having been taken on those very steps fifty years earlier. We returned to the “party room” for more fun, stories, food and libation. Dinner was at 6:00PM and then it was back to the Suite to continue the festivities. Another late night! Sunday dawned another beautiful day. We attended Mass, which was dedicated to our class of 1960. Then it was time to say goodbye with promises to write, call and visit. Did we have a good time? So much so we’ve planned a “mini” reunion for July!!

A DAIRY THAT HASN’T SPOILED OVER TIME BY JOSH KINNEY Standing in the original 100 year old freezer room, stocked with milk, eggs, and chilled gallons of delicious Swiss Tea, Bob Neri said, “We’re a throwback to the old times. The history that’s here just doesn’t exist anymore.“ There are some places that stay the same as always; unhampered and left as they once were. We call these hidden pearls of pure and preserved history, treasures. One of these relics remains on the corner of Spicer and New Jersey Aves. in the heart of Wildwood, NJ. The Lehigh Valley Dairies, originally Abbott’s Dairies, built in 1902, serving the South Jersey seashore communities. Being one of the oldest businesses on the island, its exterior has not only withstood time but original interior operations continue almost just as they were 100 years ago.
versity with a degree in accounting, family was what brought him back to his seaside roots. During the summer of their college years, Bob and two roommates worked at the Wildwood Depot making deliveries. With little money as a college student, their needs were generously met by customers who would provide food and snacks for them such as rolls, roast beef and other homemade goods as well as making milkshakes out of the damaged and discarded ice cream. He describes the relationships back then as genuine, lax and carefree. In essence, they survived off dairy, and their reliable relationships with patrons. “If you were out somewhere, your customers would want to take care of you. You were ‘their’ milkman,” he said, leaning back in his chair, sporting a smile of reminiscence.
Initially, the Wildwood Depot was Abbott’s Dairies of Philadelphia and South Jersey, serving also as an ice cream company and providing coastal services from the tip of Cape May to Atlantic City. During the 50’s, before the days of Wawa, when big Acmes and Shop Rites weren’t around, several dairies existed to serve the barrier islands, though this particular one seems to have survived in part, as others died off. From its opening day in 1902, the depot has gone through a few name changes starting with Abbotts to Pennbrook Farms, then Fairmont Foods, later Labatts Beer, and now Dean Foods, which surpasses Kraft as the largest dairy holder in the U.S. Home delivery was a large portion of the business up until the mid 70’s, however, “We’re still operating like we did 30-40 years ago,” said Robert Neri, Dean Foods Sales Manager.
The Wildwood dairy has spent over 50 years building loyal clients, such as Douglass Candies and Groff’s Restaurant on the Boardwalk. People from all walks of life found themselves employed at the Depot, including school teachers who saw a good summer job, one in particular who was there prior to Neri’s arrival was Bill Carr, a chemistry teacher at Lower Township High School, has had over 34 summers of working experience and added a creative flavor with academia on one side and blue collar on the other. Bob fondly recalls Billy, Bobby and Ralph, the 3 Osborne brothers who he grew up working with at Abbott’s. It was Bill, who also worked for Atlantic Electric for 34+ years, who helped Bob get his job there. Many interesting characters came through the dairy, leaving lasting impressions and hilarious stories, but Bob and his receptionist, Joan Gallagher, are the last two of the original crew in the last 30 years.
What started as a summer job for 15 year old Neri in 1974, evolved through his college years, becoming the foundation for what would be his full time profession. Every summer since he was 6, Neri would visit his grandparents in North Wildwood where he found himself working for Abbott’s. Having gone to the University of Colorado in the town of Boulder, or as he likes to call “The Cape May of the West” and then finishing at Temple Uni-
“Everyone came from Philly back then when around 250,000 people slammed the island in the 70s and 80s,” he said. Today, people vacation in various places such as Florida and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but back then everyone went to the treasure that was in their own backyard, Wildwood by-the-sea. day of disco there were many clubs on Pacific Avenue. In those warm summer evenings, Bob, and Wildwood Commissioner Rich Nordaby, and 3 or 4 others would be loading trucks from 4 to midnight when around 10, the cars would trickle back in the streets. Bob would be sent out, flashlight in hand, directing them into the dairy parking lot, $5 a car to park, which went to food costs for employees. The work environment Bob grew up in was completely different than that of today where so much is sensitive and protocol. Now, such things wouldn’t be allowed, but things were much different back then. Let’s say enough time has passed to reveal that little secret. What people don’t know that makes Wildwood’s location so original and unique is that 70% of its customers don’t order milk; they rely on depot employees to come in and fill it. This lost art is called Pack and Pedal. “It’s a dying aspect you don’t find anymore,” said Neri. Today, trucks come and go every day, each driver having an average of 40 customers. Because of the ebb and flow of business, it’s hard to determine what’s going to happen, such as a big weekend when customers might need more supplies, but the dairy is conveniently on the island, not coming from PA or elsewhere. The client base has expanded, including chain stores, hospitals, and nursing homes with delivery

routes as far as Pennsville, Hammonton, Vineland and Millville. Bob, Joan, and the employees of the Wildwood Depot continue a rich tradition of serving the best products with quality service. Today, Bob, along with his wife Tracy, are busy raising their two children, Austin and Daria. He loves fishing, cooking, and the Wildwood Yacht Club on Sunset Lake. He’s a history buff, an avid reader with an appreciation for art and architecture, antiques, and old relics, finding himself in the perfect place for his vintage personality. Bob and his friends have survived on the dairy and its loyal customers. Wildwoods exhibited artifact on Spicer and New Jersey Avenues has also endured in the same way, through loyal relationships that have kept preserving this historical remnant. Your 2011 Philadelphia
BY DANIELLE WILSON Steve & Lisa Renzak

It all started on December 14th, at 12 A.M., Cliff Lee had returned. That’s when I, along with many others, realized that 2011 is going to be another winning season for the Philadelphia Phillies. Opening day for the Phillies is on April 1st, and Roy Halladay will be starting that game, most likely against Astros’ starter and former Phillie Brett Myers. Charlie Manuel (Manager) and Rich Dubee (Pitching Coach) will most likely decide to al-
ternate the pitchers in the starting rotation based on which arm they throw with (Halladay RHP, Lee LHP, Oswalt RHP, Hamels LHP, Blanton RHP.) That’s right, there is a guaranteed sweep of every series we play in, as long as the offense is there to back up the above average pitching. The fifth starter is indeed Joe Blanton, no if’s, and’s, or but’s. There were rumors of him being traded after signing Lee to make room on the salary, but he’s staying put for at least one more season. There’s one little problem with this dream team, and it’s right field. Who will start there everyday? I believe that it will be both 29-year-old Ben Francisco who we acquired along with Cliff Lee back in July of 2009, and rookie Domonic Brown who was the obvious choice as a right field regular, but now The Phillies have more options, including John Mayberry Jr., and Ross Gload. I guess we’ll have to see who the break-out star is during spring training! A little about me, my name is Danielle Wilson, I’m in the 10th grade, and fell in love with the Phillies when I started watching games with my Dad in 2007. I paid close attention to everything about the team, and started writing in July ’10. My Twitter account is @CBPhresh, give me a follow!

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him...” ~Romans 8:28
My Mother, My Friend
One year ago, Fran Flynn left us to be with her husband, John, in heaven. Ironically, the day she passed away was one of her favorite days, April 1st. Whenever she talked about her children, her famous line was, “I had 4 boys, then I finally got my little girl on April Fools Day”. My dad wanted a football team, she was done when I came along! Mother and I had a very special bond. She was so easy to talk to, she gave her advice, but never interfered, she guided me to make the right decisions. My friends considered her to be their second mom. Mother will always be remembered for her sweetness, loving ways and unbelievable generosity. That generosity was mostly her time and volunteering. I
believe Mother was an angel God put on this earth to be an example of how to lead a good life. Everyone she met was touched by her in some way. To her, the glass was half full, she found good in EVERYONE! She was the “ROCK” of our family. In her subtle way, she knew how to get things done. She made sure Dad thought it was his idea! Her life was always full. She sang, danced, told jokes, was an artist and volunteered for everything! She was Irish through and through. As my father put it, “she was a tough Irish broad.” In 2006, she was diagnosed with tongue cancer. Throughout the chemo, radiation, feeding tube and medications, she never complained. Also, she never lost her hair or got sick from the chemo. She was an amazing lady! If there is someone like her, I haven’t met them yet! My mother LOVED her birthdays!! Dad would get a kick out of her. He would say “her birthday lasts the whole month of August”! I guess she loved birthdays so much, that she left us on April 1st, my birthday. Now our birthdays are “etched in stone” on her grave marker. We know she is happy and not suffering now, but we miss her terribly, what a special lady she was. Your 4 boys and little girl love you so much. We were blessed to have had you as our Mother! Love, Colleen

Frank & Flo during the summer of 1961 Wildwood lovers Francis and Florence McCoy will celebrate 50 years of wedded bliss on July 24th, 2011. Frank, a retired New York City police officer, and Flo, a former antique dealer and jeweler, spent many idyllic vacations in Wildwood with their three children, Nancy, Diane, and Frank Jr. (Frank also has son, Brian from a previous marriage) before becoming proud, permanent residents in 2010. The couple, originally from Rockland County, New York, purchased a condo in Wildwood Frank & Flo enjoying a family Thanksgiving Crest approximately 30 years ago. Shortly after Flo closed her antique and jewelry business in Northern, New Jersey, they moved into the Regency Towers in North Wildwood. There they found their very own slice of Heaven on Earth complete with a picturesque ocean view and spectacular sunsets. The fun-loving, social couple maintain an open-door policy which extends to the 5:30 Club Flo started, a weekly neighbor’s meeting held by the pool or in the game room, where they share cocktails and the latest stories. Frank & Flo at their daughter Diane’s As Frank successfully battles lung cancer wedding in NYC on June 24, 2010. Always In My Heart BY LOUANN CATANOSO
Louann’s Annual Christmas party 1995 (L-R) Front ~ Fitz, John, Charlene, Alice, Back ~ Sue Eileen, EvaMarie, Dianne
Fitz & LouAnn, High School years
Fitz & LouAnn, 1995
I met my true love in Wildwood in the fall of 1969, but, I didn’t know it. Michael Fitzpatrick came to Wildwood Catholic High School from St. Raymonds Grade school. He had an attitude problem, a chip on his shoulder, and he could be crude at times, but, I saw right through his façade; he was a “big teddy bear.”
place the stereo would most likely be playing The Fifth Dimension, War, Barry White, Motown, Helen Reddy, Bob Marley, Rodger Whittaker, and Sly and the Family Stone.
We had never spoken or been introduced, but one day in the school cafeteria he challenged me to a game of ‘football’. From what I can remember, the object of the game was to flick a pack of matches across the table towards each other. Whoever got closest to the edge, without going off the table, won the game. Needless to say, I got lucky and won every time. I believe he called me a few ‘choice names’ (with a devilish smile on his face) and we became ‘fast friends’. I couldn’t resist his ‘charm’! Throughout our high school years our friendship grew. I knew that ‘Fitz’ wished it could have been more, but I had a steady boyfriend during those years, and I just didn’t feel ‘that way’ about him; or, so I thought. But, in spite of that, we were ‘best buddies’. We would go ice skating together, and to the duck pond to feed the ducks; and we would spend hours on the phone every night talking. Many years later, he would still insist that ‘these were still among his fondest of memories.’ We had our differences. For example, he would claim to be a ‘liberal’, and I was, and still am a ‘conservative republican’, who is also a ‘feminist’. (Yes, that is possible). But, we had enough respect for each other to listen to each others opinions, and points of view; and then we would just ‘agree to disagree’. And, when we slow danced, he wouldn’t ‘yell at me’ when I would lead! He never felt threatened or intimidated by my individuality. On the other hand, we both enjoyed Clint Eastwood, James Bond, and Bogart movies. (“I remember every detail; the army was wearing gray, and you were wearing blue.” Humphrey Bogart-Casablanca). And, our music interests were the same; Dylan, Harrison, Aretha, Dr. Hook, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Todd Rundgren, and the Raspberries, were just a ‘few’ of our favorites. But, Fitz knew if he came to my
There is a slight chance he may have owned up to listening to all of this music, except for my collection of classic country, and Broadway show tunes albums. (Sweet Charity, West Side Story, Pippin!) But, I knew he enjoyed them, and that’s all that mattered. Okay, I admit it, I’m obsessed with music since birth. (There are worse things in the world.)
Best Friends: Fitz & Chris McDevitt, mid 90s
Over the years, when Fitz would profess his love for me, I would ask him how he could be satisfied with just ‘being my friend’. He told me that he would rather have me in his life as ‘just a good friend, then not to have me at all’. He would say to me, “You love me, you just don’t know it yet”. And, he would usually follow that statement with, “When you realize you’re crazy about me, you’ll know where you can reach me”. He was the one, that would send me flowers on Valentines Day; and he was the one that I would spend almost every birthday with. My birthday is June 6th, and his birthday was June 10th. And, he was the one that would hug me, when someone else broke my heart.
LouAnn & Baby Lauren
We had come a long way together. Our activity of choice had become watching the sun set, on a bench, at the bay in Townbank. Our days as teenagers, and playing flag football on the North Wildwood beach after school with the gang, were long behind us. Fitz always said that we had four songs; ‘Wild World’ and ‘How Can I Tell You’, by Cat Stevens, ‘Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad’, by Meatloaf, and ‘My Eyes Adored You’, by Frankie Valli. And since his passing in 1996, it has not surprised me in the least, to hear any two of these songs played back to back on the radio, more than once. We had settled into a beautiful, mature friendship, and genuine love for each other over our 26 year relationship together. And, he was right; I do know where to reach him. ‘He is right here, in my heart, where he has always been’. ‘Happy Valentines Day Fitz’. ‘I love You’....
Dedication: This story is dedicated to my sister, Cathy. I want to thank her for her constant, unconditional love and support; and also for thinking of this wonderful title for my story.

‘The Professor’ taking Theo Kruger to school. Some of the people on press row thought the dude looked like a fugitive from WWF or MMA. Not me. He looked right out of “Mad Max” to me: spiky Crazy Biker hair, various tattoos, and a goofy, never-ending grin. This was back on December 4 at Bally’s Atlantic City when Wildwood’s Chuck “The Professor” Mussachio pounded out a lopsided unanimous eight-round cruiserweight decision over the boxer cum biker, Theo Kruger (he didn’t want to be known as Teddy Kruger for apparent reasons), the pride of Punta Gorda, Florida. At the weigh-in the day before, Theo was going to present Chuckie, a teacher (guidance counselor, actually) in Ventnor, with an apple, but because he’d had to pull weight and was hungry and dehydrated, he chomped the apple himself. What was up with this cat? What was up was that Theo Kruger has six kids to feed, fights all over the world, has a mediocre record of 10-11-2, 3 KOs, is tough as a Boardwalk plank, and really loves the fight game. He’s a truly happy warrior, who gives his not-quite-good-enough best every second of every round, but leaves all the trash-talking and faux toughness to the jitterbug kid boxers who seem so taken with that kind of gangsta baloney.

“Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” ~1 CORINTHIANS 10:31
A less focused fighter than the Professor might have been thrown off his game by the apple gambit at the weigh-in, as well as a cordial conversation he had with Theo in which the Florida fighter recounted how when he had fought in Germany recently, at the press conference there all the European photographers were madly snapping his photo with big grins on their faces, and then he looked behind him and saw a poster of - are you ready? - Freddy Kruger.
Chuckie was a little nonplussed at the end of his brief conversation with Kruger at the weigh-in, and as they parted, he wished his opponent luck, and then added, “Not too much, though.” In the ring the next night, Theo Kruger needed all the luck he could get, as Chuck Mussachio, despite an almost 25-pound weight disadvantage (Kruger gained more than 14 pounds since the weigh-in), used his 6-1/2-inch reach advantage to keep the Floridian on the end of his highly educated jab throughout the one-sided contest. Yet even though he was taking an as-whipping, Theo fought every round with a bemused look on his face, as if he was enjoying the pain. Chuckie was having as much fun as Theo, giving the Floridian Floyd Mayweather shoulders and even breaking into a couple of Hector Camacho butt-wiggles from time to time. I guess it’s all right to showboat a little when you’re pretty safely out of harm’s way. It was a good workout for Mussachio and brought his record to 17- 1-2, 5 KOs. After the fight, he was amazed at Theo Kruger’s durability. “I hit him with everything I had and he was still there,” he marveled. For his part, Kruger was still having fun, sticking his grinning face into the after-fight photo sessions with Chuckie in the ring. The downside of the evening was a severely bruised Mussachio hand from the endless bouncing off the Kruger skull, which he said would take a couple months to heal, and thus precluded a possible fight in, of all places, Kazakhastan against Gayrat Ahmedov. A win there would have given him a chance for a WBA world light heavyweight title shot against champion Beibut Shumenov. I guess a win isn’t always a win.

Before hopping to your local movie theater, please check your local listings for release date changes. Romance is in the sea air Labor Day weekend 1988 when shy Matt (Topher Grace) lies his way into a big party, anticipating asking his high school dream girl (Anna Faris) to Take Me Home Tonight (opens March 4th) by way of a romantic tram car ride. Beneath starry skies, plain governess Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowka, opens March 11th) warms the heart of her gruff employer (Michael Fassbender) with sweet, seaworthy tales unaware that he is harboring a terrible secret. Limitless (opens March 18th) possibilities abound when a struggling writer (Bradley Cooper) discovers (and uses) a top-secret drug that improves intellect and other enviable arcade-worthy skills while being tracked by a group of killers. Also stars Anna Friel and Abbie Cornish. The Lincoln Lawyer (Matthew McConaughey, opens March 18th) has little time for Monster Truck Rides while operating his legal business out of his Lincoln Town Car. His latest case promises the highest payoff and the greatest malice. Back in school following a summer vacation filled with secrets and speedboat races and in possession of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2): Rodrick Rules (opens March 25th) as Greg (Zachary Gordon) struggles to keep his secret safe while his troublemaker brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) works to expose it. During a government experiment, a soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) learns the Source Code (opens April 1st) when he is sent back in time over and over again, waking in the body of a witness to a train bombing. He must find
the guilty party and win the heart of a beautiful fellow passenger (Michelle Monaghan) all without the assistance of an inspiring, romantic ocean view. The Easter bunny, (Russell Brand) hopped up on the boardwalk’s finest (sugary) fare, proves to be a nightmare houseguest for the slacker (James Marsden) who accidentally hits him with his car and must Hop (opens April 1st) to the high-maintenance rabbit’s every need. Your Highness (opens April 8th) comes in the unlikely form of a slothful prince (Danny McBride) too lazy to finish a game of miniature golf yet suddenly in charge of saving his perfect brother’s (James Franco) fiancé (Zooey Deschanel) and saving his father’s empire. Not satisfied with simply working on her tan, Soul Surfer (opens April 15th) Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) finds the strength to get back in the ocean after losing an arm in a shark attack. Based on a true story. Also stars Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt. Following the death of his parents during the Great Depression, a veterinary student (Robert Pattinson) drops out of school and develops a yen for (Raging) Water for Elephants (opens April 22nd) when he joins a mediocre traveling circus. He then develops feelings for the star performer (Reese Witherspoon) who is also the wife of the cruel ring master (Christoph Waltz). The Soul Surfer sails into town, determined to discover the secret to Wildwood’s charm. During a solitary swim, she uncovers the coastal version of the Source Code hidden deep beneath the salty seas. Feeling soothed by enough Water for (ocean-loving) Elephants, she surfs onto dry, sandy land, where she finds a buried treasure of sorts written within the Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2): where Rodrick (‘s) Rules clearly state what makes for a charming seaside town: serene days brimming with bright sunshine over the sparkling sand and surf. Following these enchanting days, naturally, are captivating movie-starlit nights for our cast of characters, who declare Take Me Home Tonight the lengthy boardwalk way straight into summer!

Hello fellow Anglers As another cold winter slowly fades away (not as inconspicuously as Al Gore). I am sure we are all looking forward to some milder spring weather. Spring seems to be the season of hope and optimism. Mother Nature explodes in a dynamic way with new life from plants, mammals, and marine life. I believe the saying is “Hope springs eternal.” Early spring is a great time to revitalize your fishing tackle. Somebody always seems to have created the new sure thing for catching fish. You can also take in a boat show to shake the cob webs from your brain, which may be suffering from some winter doldrums. You can check out the latest lines of engines, boats, and equipment. If you are really ambitious, fishing opportunities do exist. The back bay waters can produce winter flounder by March. Some light tackle, a chum bag, red colored sinkers, small hooks, and clam bait can be effective way to catch them. Check with your local Marina or Tackle stores for the favorite spots. They can be caught from land or by boat. Stripers should also appear in the warmer waters of the back waters first. Good early baits are blood worms and fresh clams. For the boaters, spring means lots of elbow grease and sweat. Procrastination and staring has never completed any wax job. However, a early start to the task of getting your craft ready will result in a quick launch, if the weather and fish gives us a early spring. This is a great time of year to check out your safety equipment. The early season and its dangerous water temperatures should be first in thought for boating safety. As humans we like to believe we control most things in life. Calendars represent that feeble effort. Unfortunately, Mother Nature and fish seem to have their own opinions as to when to arrive and bite. Imagine that! Time has taught me that three factors can drastically impact fishing. As of this writing Big Brother (Marine Fisheries) hasn’t issued 2011 regulations. Secondly, the weather. Thirdly, water temperature. Excluding any unfortunate and unnecessary closings by Marine fisheries or bad weather, the in-shore ocean wrecks will hold Sea bass and Tog by March. Mackerel has failed to appear the last couple of years. In the past, they would arrive by the first week in April. Generally by early May the first signs of weakfish, blues, and drum should arrive. I applaud the State of New Jersey for passing a fishing license without a fee. We all understand those fees eventually would be going to the general treasury, and not towards its original goal of marine fisheries. I will admit my ignorance as to whether this helps us meet our requirements to the Marine Fisheries paperwork. Since the State can’t seem to meet obligations to pension systems, I wonder how they will find monies for workers to complete these tasks. The potential of losing more fishing opportunities due to closure for a failure to meet Marine Fish obligations would certainly undermine the whole concept. I promise to avoid my usual ranting about the Marine Fisheries management since its early season and they haven’t really set forth all the damaging rules for the year. Pushing aside all the dark clouds on the future, Lets not forget the beauty of a glassy flat ocean, or the sensation of moist ocean air penetrating your dry nasal passages. Visual scenes of dolphins, turtles, and various creatures. The biological sense of well being and pure beauty as the first rays of sunlight streak out of the ocean’s eastern horizon at dawn. The treat of freshly caught fish , cooked to your personal taste. Whatever difficulties we create for ourselves, nature gives us back the most when we appreciated the pure beauty and ease that we can interact with her blessings. We double that experience when we share it with someone we love so go make a memory. God bless.

“Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” —Theodore Roosevelt
THE SUN MAKES ME :-) Dear Sun, this is Joe Brooks. You were kind enough to feature my story about how I met my wife, Sue in “I Met My True Love at SuperFresh.” Sue and I are down this weekend at our summer home with three of our four kids. I am in the living room listening to my daughters laugh and run back and forth upstairs. I’m also sipping my Avalon coffee and reading The Sun. I have two quick points to make that I hope will make you smile: 1.) Your wonderful paper ALWAYS warms me. Its the ultimate “feel good” reading experience. I imagine you’re a wonderfully warm and peaceful person. It shines through in The Sun. 2.) Just a note to let you know that if you ever wondered whether your work ever impacted someone, this should affirm that you’re doing great and meaningful work. Peace, Joe
