Where YESTERDAY and TODAY meet by-the-sea
May makes lasting memories. Loves moms. Moves momentously through each sun-drenched day. Welcomes back the happy sound of flip-flops. Values little things. Goes to the first boardwalk craft show. Hits the piers for the night. Dines on boardwalk cuisine. Wakes up to the singing of seagulls. Is revived by the brilliant Sun. Looks for waves. Surfs into summer... June jumps into warmer temperatures. Celebrates the sunrise. Sails through longer days. Is lured by the sea. Drives with the top down. Smells the salty air. Lives for the journey. Lounges with a lemonade. Pays tribute to dads. Has a feast during Restaurant Week. Shows off at the Wildwood Talent Showcase. Bicycles along the boardwalk. Admires the scenery. Soars above a setting sun. Gets ready for Friday night fireworks. Sleeps under the stars. Sees magic in everything... words by Meg

11. Commit yourself to constant improvement.
from the editor As there is no better place than by the edge of the sea for reflection, I think back to summer jobs of mine, while growing up in the Wildwoods. From babysitting at motels, to working in the kitchen at the Captain’s Table, to selling jewelry, handbags and shoes at the Pied Piper on the boardwalk, to my short-lived waitress jobs~ all of these before the entrepreneur in me emerged. . . before I was led to my place in The Sun. Upon graduating college as a fine arts major, I established Dorothy’s Miniatures, in which I hand crafted charming miniature replicas of bed & breakfasts that I sold to gift shops in Cape May, and lighthouses that I sold through the U.S. Lighthouse Society. I also had a portrait stand on the Cape May promenade at that time, and there was always my freelance artwork that helped supplement my income. This all eventually led to the birth of The Sun by-the-sea, now heading into its 8th year. {The longer version of the story can be read at www.sunbythesea.com in the Summer 09 Archives. Look for “Treadmill to The Sun.”} As I prepare this 39th issue, I offer up the two most profound words I know ~ thank you. These pages are for you, and because of you I love my job. I’m sure that I am not alone as I share this sentiment with an island full of merchants who are just waiting to bring you their version of ‘what is good’~ passionately pouring themselves into their work, diligently working towards one common goal, for the traditional opening of Memorial Day Weekend. This is the heartbeat of Wildwood bythe-sea. As we all search for greater meaning in our lives and in our work, God knows this is important to us. “To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life- this is indeed a gift,” He says in the Bible (ECC. 5:19.) Perhaps here in the Wildwoods, in the ‘land of opportunity,’ the U.S. of A.~ we have tapped into this secret formula for success~ to work at something you enjoy that is worthy of your time and talent, that resonates happiness and hard work as a way of life. It is this integration of our values, priorities and principles together with good work habits, that brings truth to the adage, “have a job that you love doing and you never have to work a day in your life.” Each skill learned in my life, as well as every job that didn’t last, has contributed in my journey to this place, and I am so fortunate, and I am so happy to be able to labor in love to bring you The Sun by-the-sea. Happy reading!
12. Commit yourself to quality.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart. . .” (COL . 3:23) Welcome Back to Wildwood by-the-Sea!
13. Understand that happiness is not based on possessions, power or prestige, but on relationships with people you love and respect.
Dorothy What you are is a gift from God; what you make of yourself, is your gift to God.
14. Be loyal.

W H I L E Y O U W E R E AWAY. . {A bit of breezy chat about the island’s happenings from Labor Day 2010 through Memorial Day 2011} An incredible indian summer ‘10 at the shore enticed tourists to extend their typical stay, while locals shared in fall’s bountiful abundance. Beautiful weather perfectly complemented a plethora of fantastic (and often FREE) events, with Irish, Italians, and music lovers of all kinds in enthusiastic attendance. As we trotted through a much-appreciated snow-free winter (with the exception of a post-Christmas snowfall), we eventually made a sunny stop for springtime, with numerous street repairs and detours through Surf Avenue and beyond, when birds and shoobies alike started to make their way back, culminating in another fabulous summer by the sea! Because “No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn,” (author Hal Bodland) we turn to the warming coastal season upon us as we recall all that occurred While You Were Away... . . . TO IMPROVED ROADWAYS Road improvements are being made on Surf Ave. in North Wildwood from 18th to 11th Ave. The two-year project is being funded by a USDA grant, low-interest loan program. During this first year, sewer lines were redone with any necessary repairs made. The road must settle for a year before the roadway can be resurfaced next winter. Phase I is expected to be completed before the beginning of summer. Neil’s has undergone major changes since their purchase in July 2010. An outdoor dining terrace surrounded by palm trees was added, along with a newly paved parking lot. While complete makeovers were also made inside, both upstairs and down, their unique menu, however, continues to feature Neil’s infamous steaks and seafood, as well as their award-winning Clam Chowder and a variety of mouth-watering menu items sure to please everyone in your family. A historical review of the establishment is as follows: Neil Gordon purchased Grenoble’s in 1962, thus making it Neil’s Steak & Oyster House. He sold in 1985
and for a short while Neil’s was Seasons, until Yogi Kurtz & Big Fish Restaurant Group bought it in 1998 and made it Neil’s Steak & Chowder House. It then became Neil’s Island Pub & Grille in 2010 and is now Neil’s Steak & Seafood.

“WILDWOOD - A NEW SEASON”

Jim & Trish Mikula with 2 of their 7 daughters, Nicole (l) & Alysse (r). The Mikula’s made settlement on their 3 acres of bayfront property on March 7, 2011. The new Coconut Cove promises to become a North Wildwood icon.
Excitement is in the Anglesea air as local islanders witness the transformation of the former Sunset Bay Restaurant into the new Coconut Cove Restaurant. Steve Narrigan, who created and owned Sunset Bay since 1997, sold to NE Philadelphia restaurateurs, Jimmy & Trish Mikula, who are the majority owners, and Ed, Joe & Mike Milillo, the minority partners. Wildwood historians would know that this property’s original establishment began at the edge of the bay with the Deaver family’s El Dorado Café & Motel in the 1940s. Ed Zaberer purchased the 48seat restaurant in 1955, after getting his start in the business with his two Boardwalk ventures~ a hot dog stand and Holliday’s Restaurant. Ed Zaberer expanded into a 35,000 sq. ft. landmark eatery. At its peak, the North Wildwood “World-famous” dining hall served more than 3,000 dinners on a good, hot, summer-weekend night. When Ed & Ayne Zaberer retired to Florida in 1988, they sold to a New York businessman. It sadly foreclosed shortly after that and sat vacant for a few

years before burning to the ground on June 10, 1992. At Coconut Cove, the new owners are working toward creating the ultimate familyfriendly oasis. The vision and creative concepts for the new tropical paradise came from Jim Mikula, who managed a myriad of tropical-related responsibilities, preparing to open the doors for Memorial Day weekend. However, he admits that without the magnificent team behind him, none of it would have materialized. He would be remiss not to mention his Wildwood team of Lawyers~ Stagliano, DeWeese & Fuscerello, his Architect, Alan Blair, Jeff Curran owner of Patriot Construction, and Jerry’s Demolition. (Jimmy vows to name a few items after these guys.) One of the main additions is a large, 2 story pub called the Tiki House, offering a casual menu, 3 full service bars, and 7 flat screen TVs for your favorite sporting events. Next to the Tiki House will be the sandy dance floor under the canopy called The Cove, an entertaining musical lineup is on the summer calendar with music noon til 10PM. After 10PM, music moves into the Tiki House til 2AM. The original restaurant, now recog-

nized as the Bay Club, with indoor and open-deck dining, as well as a new upper deck, offers affordable, upscale casual dining, while enjoying the extraordinary innercoastal waterway views. While there, experience a new version of the tropics complete with sandy beaches, authentic tiki huts, (even a professional masseuse), and lounge chairs, all with spectacular sunsets included. Every Wednesday evening, starting June 29th, a Luau Dinner Show will be a feature attraction for the whole family. Coconut Cove will have 7 full service bars altogether, including the boat bar dubbed “7 She’s” after the Mikula’s 7 daughters that range in age from 11 to 26, who will mostly all be on deck working together for their inaugural summer at Coconut Cove. Matt Sobon, is the manager at Coconut Cove, (he formerly managed all TGIFs in the tristate area.) Matt has been overseeing menus and staff, preparing for opening day.

THE BOARDWALK REPORT A Pine-Fresh Boardwalk ~ Boardwalk reconstruction began with the purchase of pressure-treated white pine last summer. Budget constraints prevented the city from purchasing the tropical hardwood that comprised the decking of the boardwalk reconstruction’s two phases. Public Works employees worked to complete the project reaching Montgomery Ave. by spring. The city’s section of the weatherbeaten boardwalk spans from Cresse Ave. to 26th Ave. with much of the construction dating back more than 85 years to its innovative structure.

A FOND (AND GIANT) FAREWELL A farewell commemoration was held Sunday, October 10th for The Giant Slide at Morey’s Piers known as “The Wipe Out.” The public celebration included photos, a “Memory Lane” display, and an exhibit of future attractions. In the fall of 1968, brothers Bill and Will Morey were in Fort Lauderdale, Florida when they spotted a giant 12-lane fiberglass slide operating near a shopping center. This inspired them to purchase a comparable slide they named “The Wipeout,” beginning a long-standing passion for amusement park rides. Sam’s PIZZA PALACE
www.funchase.com THE RETURN OF A CLASSIC The Wildwood Planning Board gave approval to the owners of Sam’s Pizza for construction of a new 55-unit Shore Plaza Motel. The motel and Sam’s were destroyed in a fire December 2005. While Sam’s Pizza was rebuilt and opened Memorial Day 2006, the classic 1950s Doo Wop motel site remained empty. Design tactics include many of the motel’s original plans, originally built by Will Morey in 1957. The groundbreaking work began in March with a completion date of April 2012. A WINNING DISH Wally Jurusz, the Executive Chef of the Morey organization, won Best Entrée at the 10th Annual Men R’ Cookin’ event. The event, which benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City, boasted 75 cooks and chefs from diverse backgrounds with various skills. The participants came prepared with secret family recipes and imaginative culinary creations. Wally’s winning dish, grilled Cape May Sea Scallops with Cuban spices and chimichurri, is available by request at Joe’s Fish Co. on the Boardwalk at 26th Ave. in North Wildwood. The proud winner is a 1993 Rutgers University graduate (with a B.A. in Economics and History and later graduated from the infamous Culinary Institute of America (CIA). . . . Thanks to an online lottery system, 200 sliders were given the opportunity to take a final slide down the Wipe Out. One of those lucky winners was Wildwood lover Lori Altman pictured above. Lori happily made the long drive to Wildwood from Pittsburg, PA, to be a part of the sendoff. She received the e-mail saying she’d won at 5 0’clock Saturday, the day before the big event, and was on the way to Wildwood with her parents within hours. A personal noteworthy event also took place for Lori this winter. Being a recent college grad, looking for work, Lori took her passion for ‘all things Wildwood’ on a leap of faith. She was determined to make her dream come true, which was to one day live here on the island. Lori set out on a job search in the dead of January winter. She made several long trips down from Pittsburg to go on interviews and apartment hunts. She could very well be a poster child for anyone who has a desire to pursue their dream. She did it! You can visit her at your local Bank of America branch and say hello, or you might see her strolling the boards or riding her bicycle! She’s the one wearing the big smile! Read On!! WILDWOOD - A NEW SEASON PUTTING THE ‘MORE’
in Morey’s BY ALISON HELLER While You Were Away, Morey’s Piers has been refurbishing, constructing and planning like never before to bring visitors the most unforgettable season yet. Morey’s has stuffed a ton of new surprises into the events calendar this year. Enjoy an action-packed season of food, fears and flying through the air! “it” is in full swing, literally! The newest addition to the ride roster will spin and hurl riders 65 feet into the sky! Featuring a first-of-itskind lap bar system designed by Morey’s Piers in collaboration with KMG, “it” gives riders greater freedom of movement. The ride combines a swinging motion up to 120° and a rotating center where gondolas seat a total of 24 passengers who are facing each other. Ghost Ship 2011 will offer a new scare show, acting and lighting changes, a new costume and make-up scheme designed by industry professionals and a number of physical changes to the interior maze that will more fully immerse guests into the horrifying experience. Many of the cages and fences that separated guests from hungry zombies have been stripped down, leaving guests face to mangled face with the creatures of the Ghost Ship. “The Ghost Ship’s new surprises are meant to immerse, impress and impart a deeper sense of gloom on the adventurous as they wind their way through the derelict vessel,” said Terry O’Brien, Ghost Ship Manager. Speaking of scary surprises, Morey’s Piers will host an epic Halloween event for the first time ever. Morey’s FEARS: Terror on the Boardwalk will transform Mariner’s Landing into a nightmare for six nights in October. Aside from dark incarnations of the Sea Serpent, SuperScooters, Tea Cups, Pirates of the Wildwoods, Rollie’s Coaster, Musik Express and Moby Dick, look for an especially traumatizing Ghost Ship experience as well as two frightening all-new Halloween attractions that will only be available during Morey’s Fears. “This event is geared toward teens and adults looking for a terrifyingly good time,” said Dino Fazio, Director of Operations. “We’re designing it to be one of the most frightening Halloween attractions out there.” For the foodies and flip flops crowd, Morey’s
Piers recently cooked up two more events this year. In addition to the Wild Half, a new half marathon that will take runners all across The Wildwoods, the boardwalk and the beautiful beach in August, Morey’s Piers will host the first Wildwood Surf Festival in July and a Chili and Chowder Cook Off on Souper Sunday. “We are always looking for new ways for people to enjoy our beautiful beaches and a Surf Festival seems like a perfect fit,” said Nick Lassor, Beach Sports Manager. The Wildwood Surf Festival will celebrate surf culture in a unique way this July. Participants can learn to surf for free, take in live music, dance at a luau, taste delicious barbeque and shop surf artists and vendors. This event is the first and only to offer after hours admission to Raging Waters Waterpark. There will truly be something anyone can participate in and enjoy. On October 9th, experience a taste of fall at the Souper Sunday Chili and Chowder Cook Off. Professional chefs, individuals and corporate entrants will battle for the title of Best Chili or Chowder in the Wildwoods. Absorb the festive boardwalk atmosphere as contestants use their finest ingredients to prepare winning dishes. The competition will feature three divisions: Chili, New England Clam Chowder and Manhattan Clam Chowder. “Our West Coast friends over at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk have two great cook off events so we decided to bring the idea to the best boardwalk on the East Coast,” said Kristel Fillmore, Events and Entertainment Manager. “Tasting kits will be available so guests can taste entries. What better way to end a season and welcome winter than with a hot bowl of chili or chowder?” Always in a state of planning, Morey’s Piers understands what it means to have an “endless summer.” “We don’t really ever stop moving,” said Kristel Fillmore. “Between parties, events, sports and performances, our minds kind of remain in a constant state of summertime and I’m definitely not complaining!” For more information about what’s new at Morey’s Piers in 2011, visit www.MoreysPiers.com.

A HEALTHIER COLOR Rio Grande’s Green Street Market employees and local artists Terri Amig and Penny Beck joined together to brighten up the storefront with new signage and a new entranceway featuring faux marble painted columns. A WILDWOOD HARMONY ~ In 1947, before Doo Wop’s time, “The Official Wildwood Song” was copy written and a 78-rpm single was recorded with words and music courtesy of Eddie Malle, Al Scottoline, and Harry Keating. The music resurfaced in 2010 when former Harrison Hotel owner Dick Powell and his wife Lucille removed a stack of sheet music from the hotel and took to the their Boyertown, PA home. Piano player Lucille randomly pulled out the longago music sheet one day and started playing the melodious tune. The Powells recently contributed a copy of the song that spoke so succinctly about the allure of Wildwood’s beaches and boardwalk to the George Boyer Museum. Powell, Greater Wildwood Tourism and Improvement Development Agency Ben Rose and Tracy DuFault at Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce are interested in reviving the song once legalities are resolved. HONORING WILDWOOD’S HISTORY The New Jersey Historical Commission honored the Wildwood Historical Society at the 27th Annual New Jersey History Conference at Monmouth University. They were the only organization to receive one of the seven awards made throughout the state from Bergen to Cape May Counties in recognition of their value to local schools, civic organizations, and avid researchers. The Historical Society has over 2,000 artifacts and 120 photo albums covering Wildwood’s rich history at its George F Boyer Museum. The museum, which is located on Pacific Ave. between Spencer and Spicer Avenues, accommodates approximately 7,000 history buffs a year. Founded in 1962, the museum, originally located in the Wildwood City Hall, moved to its more current, spacious location in 1990.
THE 50’S ARRIVE IN FABULOUS STYLE The Fabulous ’50s weekend was held Friday, October 15th through Sunday, October 17th. The event celebrating Wildwood’s contribution to music got off to a wonderful (albeit windy start) with concerts and craft shows, dancing and Doo Wops. The weekend started at the Wildwoods Convention Center on Friday night as the Record Hop had Jerry Blavat spinning classic oldies. The Free Fabulous 50’s Street Fair sponsored by WIBBAGE 94.3 FM was held Saturday, at Fox Park and included a live remote broadcast, food and craft vendors, a classic car show, Doo Wop tours and live entertainment. A valiant attempt was also made to break the Guinness World Record For Most People Dancing The Twist. The highlight of the weekend came Saturday night, when Chubby Checker celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Twist. A packed house twisted the night away! The concert at the Wildwoods Convention Center also featured Dee Dee Sharp, Joe Dee and the Starlites and the Marvelettes. Wildwood was proudly considered the epicenter of Rock ‘n Roll originality in the 1950’s and early 60’s when Bill Haley and His Comets debuted “(We’re Gonna) Rock around the Clock” here. Nineteen-year-old Chubby Checker performed Hank Ballard’s “The Twist” in July 1960 at the Rainbow Club. On August 6, 1960, he performed on Dick Clark’s national program, launching a dance craze. A CHILDREN’S HOME BY THE SEA GETS A FRESH LOOK thanks to generous donations by generous people. The Children’s Fresh Air Home at 11th and Surf Aves. in North Wildwood had a record fundraising year and an eventful 2010 as the old but loved building began its renovations. None of this would have been possible, of course, without the noble efforts of countless volunteers. Lifelong Cape May County resident Ross Denham’s Construction stepped up as general contractor while The NJ Carpenter’s Union contributed labor for the home’s interior demo. Meanwhile, Mike Emmer, Bill Kelly and Morgan Kelly continue to maintain the lawn and grounds. The home’s founder, Ida Dukes of Haddonfield, started an organization in 1896 called Christian Endeavor. Dukes brought the first group of children to Wildwood starting in 1911. Since that time, thousands of innercity children between the ages of 7 and 11 have spent summers in the home, and will be again soon.

Opening day at Tony Luke’s, 4PM, All Sold Out!
. . . MORE NEW BUSINESS After months of preparation, Tony Luke’s owners Nicky Luke and Mike Vicario didn’t know what to expect when they finally opened their doors on a chilly Black Friday morning. The friendly staff, including their hardworking Shark friend, happily served a famished steady stream of customers from early morning that typical- holidayshopping day, until their fresh-baked rolls ran out around 4 PM. Selling out on their first day prompted Nick and Mike to remain open all winter long, a decision a hungry group gratefully approved. Fortunately, they are now prepared for the season, (which is upon us at last!) when they’ll be serving their award-winning sandwiches every day, all summer long.
Wildwood Title & Trust Company, c. 1913 Wildwood & Atlantic Aves. Bobby & Margie Villon celebrate 10 of the best years of their lives at Tucker’s Irish Pub this summer. Bobby and crews worked every day this winter on complete interior renovations, from floor to ceilings and roof and in between. The newly exposed original brick walls reveal the grand old Wildwood structure that it was back in its banking days that began nearly 100 years ago. (pictured above) Come and check out their updated menu too. A new stage was built in anticipation of a great musical lineup which includes a Southern Rock with a little bit of Country night. Phil & Debbie John would like to thank you for being part of their summer breakfast tradition for 43 years at the Sandcastle Restaurant in Wildwood Crest. They will now be serving breakfast every morning (except Tuesdays) from 7:30a.m. to 12 noon at their Jersey Girl Restaurant on Schellenger & Atlantic Aves. in Wildwood. Early dinner dining at Jersey Girl begins at 5pm.
Shoobies Good Eats which opened last summer by local islanders Joe & Nancy Rullo, are set to add an outdoor eating area on the 25th St. side of the building, complete with awnings and real palm trees for a cool afternoon Shoobie-style dining experience. Come in and check out their eclectic cuisine which features a wide range of ‘good-eats’ for the entire family. Keenan’s Irish Pub owner Jack Keenan sadly passed away on October 4, 2010 from sudden heart failure. He was 66 years old. Alongside his two sons, Scott and Sean, Jack purchased the popular bar on Old New Jersey Ave in 1998, proudly serving as host during that time. The newest addition to Keenan’s was the old Harry the Hats which Jack proudly named “Angry Jack’s.”
Catina Blinebury Simmons proudly embarked on a life-long dream as she opened her own gift and variety store Beach Whiskers on Pacific Avenue in Wildwood, next to the Crib Rental, across from Marvis. She brings with her years of experience in the retail business as she spent her summers working on the Wildwood Boardwalk at such places as Olympic Fun Center and Mariners Landing. Catina will carry a wide range of goods in her store such as MudPie, Ugly Dolls, Hammond’s Candies, Greeting cards, jewelry, accessories, lots of beach toys for girls and boys, and much more.

A NEW SEASON Conclusion...now that you’re back! With idyllic days spent ocean side mere moments away, Wildwood promises to pull out all the sandy stops this summer. While blissful beach time does battle with starry boardwalk nights, outdoor concerts compete with creative craft shows. Bring your appetite, of course, as the ultimate sea-inspired restaurants, not to mention tasty boardwalk cuisine, take center stage. Meanwhile, miniature golf and mystery thrill rides find an exhilarating spot in everyone’s vacation guide book. With Wildwood Crest being named one of the top three family vacation spots (according to Trip Advisor) what better time to check out what’s happening beneath the Wildwood Sun? Turning the page to a warmer seaside season, we remember “that beautiful season. . . Summer . . . filled is the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape lay as if newly created in all the freshness of childhood.” Author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow must have spent time growing up by the sea . . .
Written by Meg Corcoran & Dorothy Kulisek Carl Gallucci, of West Wildwood, proudly poses at the very first ever MISTER SOFTEE Icecream franchise to open up on the Wildwood boardwalk. . . and also the first in Cape May county! You’ll not only see the brightly colored red, white & blue stand, and the familiar Mister Softee ice cream cone logo, but you’ll hear the old Mister Softee jingle. The name & tune have both been around since 1956. Carl is no stranger to the boards after having grown up working at his parents Dairy Queen since the age of 13.

WiLDWOOD by-the-sea: Nostalgia & Recipes COZY MORLEY by Anita Hirsch, author of "Wildwood-By-The-Sea: Nostalgia and Recipes"
A postcard of Eddie Suez Club Avalon
Cozy Morley at the dedication of his statue in Cozy’s Corner in 2003.
August 1951, Magnolia Ave. Beach, Wildwood (L-R) Joe Bennet, Tom (Cozy) Morley, Lee Hesser Picture submitted by Lee Hesser, N. Wildwood summer resident. He was a boy scout with Cozy (Tom Morley) in Troop 212 at Front & Christian street in a church basement, from 1937-1939. Lee recalls what a great ‘ear wiggler’ Cozy was when they were young boys.
Cozy Morley’s Continental Motel once stood at 8th and JFK Blvd. in North Wildwood, where the Alante is today.
Cozy Morley’s Club Avalon in North Wildwood in the late 1950s. (L-R) Teddy Squadowski (aka Squash), Joe McMonagle (Grandfather of editor/publisher Dorothy McM. Kulisek) and Cozy Morley
Cozy Morley is a living legend in the Wildwoods. Now 85 years old, he retired to Florida in the winter and North Wildwood in the summer with his beloved wife of almost 25 years, Bobbie Morley. Cozy and Bobbie met when she was a waitress at Cozy’s. Not too many years ago, Cozy was appearing at the Lighthouse Point. A capacity crowd of his admirers were there waiting to hear Cozy sing: “On the Way to Cape May”. Or another song the audience loved was “When Your Old Wedding Ring was New”. His fans waited to hear him tell the same old jokes. He told the one about the Philadelphia cop who saw a horse die on Moyamensing Avenue . When he was filling out his report, the cop realized he couldn’t spell Moyamensing so he dragged the horse to Second Street. Another joke that the audience loved to hear was the one about the time his mother got him his first banjo. Cozy said that he and his mom stood outside the pawnshop looking at the banjo inside and she said “are you sure this is what you want?” He said “yes”, so she picked up a rock..... Cozy was born in Philadelphia and grew up in South Philly, in the Irish neighborhood around Third and McKean Streets. He enjoyed music and learned to play the banjo. He went on to study the clarinet and the saxophone, borrowing instruments from the nearby Mummer’s String Band Clubhouse. After he graduated from high school, he went right into the music business at the age of 18. And he found his way to North Wildwood and Club Avalon at Spruce and Olde New Jersey Avenue, owned by Eddie Suez. Cozy would pack the place which held 1,100, for his four hour shows. There were rows of tables pointed down to the stage, “like a beer fest hall”, says Cozy’s sister-in-law Mariellen Hawthorne and the people would sit at the tables and look down to the stage. He referred to his club as the “toilet”
because it was so dirty. If it was raining, the roof would leak. There was no air-conditioning, only fans in the windows and in the ceiling. But he had his followers and they filled up Club Avalon every night in the summer. He made his money “talking down his own place”, says Bob Bright. “The place should have been condemned, but it was so much fun”, remembers Bob Forstburg. Eventually Cozy took over the ownership of Club Avalon and renamed it Cozy Morley’s. Cozy was the emcee at the club. He told the jokes, all clean jokes, he didn’t have to curse to get laughs, and he sang and played a few instruments in between acts. To cover up his shyness, he took on a classy funnyman stage personality. He also had his own orchestra. Howard Reynolds was the bandleader and sax player. Before the shows, Howard and hostess Bebe Flanagan seated 1000 in less than two hours. He was able to bring in some of the biggest entertainers of the 50’s and 60’s such as Joey Bishop and Al Martino. Westy’s took over the club in 1996 and it was rebuilt. All that is left now are the red steps that went into the original Club Avalon. Westy’s Irish Pub was built around those steps. After Westy’s took over the club, Cozy appeared at the Sands Casino in the Copa Room in Atlantic City. He filled the room on Tuesdays and Wednesday afternoons with his fans. And on Friday nights he appeared in the Casbah Theatre at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City at 8:00PM and at 10:00PM. When Cozy retired, after 58 years in show business, his fans wanted a tribute to him in North Wildwood. They hired Zenos Frudakis to make a clay sculpture of Cozy which was then cast in bronze. On Memorial Weekend, 2003, at Westy’s Irish Pub in North Wildwood, the eight foot bronze statue of Cozy Morley was dedicated in what is known as Cozy’s Corner. When the statue was dedicated,

Clams Casino 18 (approx) fresh littleneck clams, cleaned & shucked 3 Tb olive oil 3 oz. diced pancetta or bacon 1 cup diced red bell pepper 1/3 cup chopped shallots 2 large garlic cloves, minced 1/4 tsp dried oregano 1/3 cup dry white wine 3 Tb fresh parmesan 3 Tb shredded mozzarella Salt and fresh black pepper Heat your oil in a large heavy skillet. Add the pancetta (bacon) ..... reserve approx 1 oz. and saute approx 3 minutes until crisp. Drain on paper towels. To the same skillet, add your bell pepper, shallots, garlic and oregano. Gently saute about 5 minutes until shallots are tender and translucent. Add the wine and simmer until almost evaporated, about 2 minutes. Turn off the heat and completely cool your mixture. Then stir in the reserved pancetta and and 2 Tb. parmesan. Preheat your oven to 500°. Line a heavy baking sheet with foil, and arrange your clams. Mound the vegetable mixture on top of each one. Mix your remaining parmesan with the shredded mozzarella. Generously sprinkle on each clam, and bake approx 10 minutes until cooked through and golden. Cozy says “Enjoy”!
there was a three day tribute which included a parade and a roast. The then North Wildwood Mayor Aldo Palombo called Cozy “Mr. North Wildwood: he is an institution. He brought good times to the Wildwoods,” and “his exit from North Wildwood severely impacted upon the business in the entertainment section.” His wife Bobbie says Cozy still enjoys entertaining friends and family in his home. He will play the banjo and the piano and repeat some of his jokes. Bobbie planned a surprise party for him in April for his 85th birthday. “He is still the most loved and beloved local entertainer and humanitarian,” says Bobbie Morley. Thank you to Cozy Morley, Bobbie Morley, Mariellen Hawthorne, the Wildwood Historical Museum, and Bob Forstburg for helping with this article.

Take milk for example, we have skim, 1%, 2%. Whole, soy, almond milk, coconut milk, rice milk, buttermilk, coffee creamers in assorted flavors, half and half, fat free half and half. These will all be in my refrigerator at one time. Then we have stick butter (both salted and unsalted) tub butter (also salted and unsalted) low fat spreads (each persons favorite brand). The Juices just about take up a whole shelf, we have pulp, no pulp, calcium added, original. That’s only the orange juice, we also have apple juice, natural and original, then the grape, tomato and pineapple juices. Everybody likes a different flavored salad dressing— French, Caesar, Russian, blue cheese etc. Even with just oils and vinegars, they come in many varieties— red wine vinegar, white wine, red balsamic, white balsamic, cider also olive oil, extra virgin olive oil, corn oil, canola, walnut and peanut oils. I grew up in an Italian household, married an Italian, mostly ate and cooked our traditional foods. I laugh when my granddaughters request certain grated cheese on their macaroni dishes. Some want parmesan others want pecorino, etc., when I was little I just asked to have some cheese grated on my macaroni. They will complain if I do not have the one they request. So I have different containers of “grated” cheese, and also a chunk of cheese for cooking because I like to grate it fresh into my recipes. We have Guldens dark mustard, French’s yellow, Grey Poupon, Chinese hot mustard and horseradish mustard. I try to arrange the door shelves in the refrigerator with the same type of items so they will be easy to find, but it still gets out of hand. Grape jelly, strawberry jam, raspberry jam, marmalade, mint jelly! There was a day when you asked your guests if they would like either a cup of coffee or tea. Now, you practically have to hand them
a menu listing the choices they expect you to have on hand; regular coffee, decaf coffee, lite coffee, regular tea, decaf tea, green tea and dozens of flavored teas both regular and decaf. Then we have the sweeteners, the yellow packet, the blue packet and the pink packet (Oh! If you do not have the right brand it would almost ruin the party) of course you have the sugar but now you also need sugar in the raw. Today the weather was very hot and humid so for supper, I decided to cook hamburgers on the grill thinking it would be nice and simple. I did not count on the matter of choices again. Well, we had to make a trip to the market for buns, and when I say buns with an “S” I mean it. We had to buy potato buns, sesame seed buns, whole wheat buns and just plain old fashioned buns (wait I already had those). Oh! Then we had to buy turkey burgers for those who do not eat beef. The freezer is jammed too. Everybody has to have their favorite flavor of ice cream (what happened to plain old vanilla and chocolate?) Then they want pops, and ices and sandwiches in their favorite brand names. We also have an assortment of waffles, fries, chicken nuggets, etc. Plus the meats and vegetables I use for planning meals. I must confess when a fruit or vegetable is in season I stock the freezer with it. In the cupboard we have three different brands of tuna, assorted cereals, macaronis and breadcrumbs (yes, I said breadcrumbs) regular, Italian style and panko. Choices are wonderful, the world has changed, a little faster than I would like, (remember when cornflake cereal was just plain Kellogg corn flakes?). I am a little old fashioned, I do things my mother and grandmother did in the kitchen but I feel I am lucky to now have the choice of gadgets and different products that were not available to them to make their lives easier. Love my family and their different choices do make our lives quite interesting and sometimes overwhelming, but every summer we have something to laugh and complain about and we make memories to last over the cold winter and beyond.

“He leadeth me beside still waters, and restoreth my soul.”
BENCHES of MEMORIES by Alice Mietz While I was wandering around my favorite flower gardens of the well known Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood, N.J., I began to look at all the plaques and engravings on the weathered wooden benches, which were scattered throughout the grounds and even up to the rocky cliff edge of the water. I sat down on one of them and studied the plaque mounted there. It was dedicated to the stewardess, Deborah James Walsh, on the now famous Flight 93 that crashed into the ground in Schwenksville, Pa. with thwarted terrorists on 9/ 11. She had loved the seashore. What a tragic end to so many lives on that infamous day! I said a short prayer for the stewardess and then for all the other passengers and for their families, for all that was lost and for all that could have been.
There was a plaque that said, “Please have a seat on our bench and enjoy the beautiful view.” How thoughtful! I was thankful for all those many benches. I needed them to rest, for I couldn’t walk long distances any more, because of my progressing arthritis and ataxia. It had changed many aspects of my life and even some of my plans for the future. Shortly afterwards I got up, walked some more, and took pictures of the beautiful and peaceful scenes, as well as the benches themselves. To reminisce on a cold windy day. My legs bothered me again and I took a rest on another bench that said “God’s Beauty Surrounds Us”, how true! I looked at another bench, and it was dedicated to Capt. John A Carlson of the “Edwin”. Visions of a strong and rugged man at sea, fishing in storms and rough waters swirled in my mind. Strolling along the meticulously tended and colorfully landscaped grounds, I was entertained by the bright yellow dancing daffodils and the multi hued tulips that graced these gardens. It was an unusually warm and breezy spring day, and I became entranced with the overall beauty and design of the gardens. Reading the informative guide written by the gardener, I learned both the Latin and the common names for the many plant varieties encompassed on these grounds. These gardens are home to many butterflies and their quaint butterfly houses. The gardens calmed me and inspired me to plant a few different flowers in my small garden at home. There was even a special shaded bench in the side garden in memory of Daniel Hoellering, honoring him for 74 years of faithful
~Psalm 23: 2-3
Scouting from Boy Scout Troop 74, in North Wildwood. It even included the Scout symbol and the motto, “Be Prepared” on the bench, which impressed me, because of my years as a former Boy Scout leader. The steps to the shop were steep for me, but well worth the climb because it was so friendly and cozy, and the warm and caring staff shared some information and trivia of the area. I bought a hat with the lighthouse logo on it, and put it on. I am a supporter of the Lighthouse, one of their “Friends”. I again took the lighthouse tour and viewed the many facets of the light prisms. The first floor was decorated nicely, and gave a lot of information on how it was like to live and work in the lighthouse. The second floor steps proved to be too much, but because I frequented the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse web site, I had taken the virtual tours of all the rooms and explored the several views of the grounds from different angles, and I can enjoy it all again and again from the comfort of my computer. I went back down the main steps and sat down at the garden entrance on one of the several double benches surrounding the brick patio. The Hereford Lighthouse has a unique ongoing fundraiser, selling commemorative bricks for their brick patio. There were reminders of happy times like birthdays, family reunions, anniversaries, and also remembering family and friends no longer with us. A few even commerated their weddings that took place here. I sat and soaked it all in and gazed at the old fashioned wooden gazebo, where many a concert was held and several weddings were celebrated.
After a while, I continued on my walk, down the new sea wall to the inlet point. It was so quiet and serene that I sat down on one of the bench alcoves to look out onto the beach and the rolling surf and the sea. The sun was getting low, and the tide was going out as I enjoyed the restless seagulls as they flew around hawking and continually looking for food. The energetic little sandpiper birds were fluttering along the surf in flowing patterns. My attention was drawn over to the now familiar engravings. I sat and thought about many things, but most importantly was how special and fragile life is and how long and lasting memories are particularly when they are shared. There are so many dedications, some eye catching, like the bench for the Marine, with “Semper Fi” at the Hereford Inlet Park. One bench reads. “Go Eagles”, one says “Remember to wear sun block” and one proclaims, “Swim near a lifeguard”. Some are poignant, some are mysterious, some are funny and some are sad, but they all are dedicated to someone who had been loved and cherished and had an impact on many other lives. I used to feel annoyed about how many times I needed to sit and rest. Now they have become my special time to imagine the stories behind the names and I eagerly look for benches to sit on, even when I don’t need to. I am planning to purchase a brick at the Lighthouse, and to have it commemorate the 40th Wedding anniversary that my dear husband and I have just celebrated. Perhaps one day, someone will take the time to think about us and maybe even to say a little prayer.

The Soundtrack of My
Life BY JOE RUSSO
A
couple of weeks ago my computer became the victim of a virus, forcing me to erase my hard drive and start all over again. And, that meant rebuilding my iPod as well. Fortunately, I backed up all of my files on an external drive and when I was digging around in there looking for my music I remembered reading about ‘The Ultimate Playlist’ on the website of Philadelphia comedian and radio personality Big Daddy Graham. It gave me an idea: Why don’t I create a Wildwood playlist? Immediately I started to categorize certain songs already in my collection into the various stages of my life – childhood, adolescence, teenager, young adult and my current level of rapidly graying middle age. There are so many which hold a place in my heart for one reason or another, whether it be a song I heard

on my new transistor radio that my dad bought for me when I was a boy, a high school party, a night in a nightclub, or one which reminded me of summer. On that note, I will open with the song that will lead off my playlist, the song that brings me back to the carefree summer days of my boyhood: ’Higher and Higher’ by Jackie Wilson. Every time I listen to it I hear the captain of the ‘Vamp’ blowing the air horn to signal the start of another morning of sport fishing, my aunt declaring that the town is “packed” and the restaurant is going to be “really busy tonight,” and the smell of suntan oil mixing in the salty air down on the beach. All of a sudden I am ten years old again with three month’s to kill doing absolutely nothing. Another song to be included is ‘This Magic Moment’ by Jay and The Americans, which sends me to the musty auditorium at the old Philip Baker School in Wildwood Crest on a Friday night dance where the girls sat along the wall on one side and the boys directly op-
posite. The DJ would announce, “Girls choice,” or, “Boys choice,” and we would shuffle across the room in search of a partner. Our principal required us to dance at arm’s length and once in a while she would turn the lights on just to make sure. Or, play me some ‘Down on the Corner’ by Creedence Clearwater Revival and I am back in Snuffy’s Luncheonette with my buddies wolfing down corn dogs and cheese fries and playing pinball while the girls are up front line dancing by the juke box. Certain songs by Earth Wind and Fire conjure up the nights I spent at The Stardust nightclub during the Disco days listening to one of my favorite cover groups ‘Wildflower.’ And, I would be remiss if I failed to mention any song from Deep Purple’s ‘Machine Head’ (many of you know why) or the torch songs favored by a number of customers that I listened to night after night at Russo’s bar. And, what about the
music that guided me through the years of teenage angst? I could go on and on and fill up my entire iPod with nothing but memory inducing Wildwood songs and, most likely, I would remember a couple more after I was finished. So, it begs the question: “Is it endless?” And, better yet, “Isn’t this too good of an idea to limit my playlist to just my own memories?” Therefore I’ve decided to invite contributions that will change my Wildwood Playlist into the Sun-By-The-Sea Wildwood Playlist. If you wish to participate, please submit your song nominations to joe.russo75@yahoo.com along with the memories attached to them. I want to traverse the different eras of the Wildwoods; from the Starlight Ballroom to wherever it is that kids go today. All generations, both local and out-oftowners, are encouraged to respond. The results will be published in a later edition of The Sun. So, good luck and happy listening!

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” —Anatole France
Bauer ON THE BEACH BY KEVIN MCFADDEN He was on to us before we even opened the door. We were greeted with our typical and desired rush of jumping yellow fur. We had left our 5 year old yellow Lab Bauer cooped up at home with a sitter, while my wife and I enjoyed a few days down Wildwood. He could smell something different on us. He buried his nose in our pants and shoes. It was almost like he could smell the salt air, feel the sand, sense our laid back attitudes that only a few days by the ocean can give. The only complaint from our trip was that we couldn’t take him along. During the second day of our visit, we wandered north, past the boards, to where the beach narrows then widens after 2nd Avenue. When we got there, we were greeted by dogs playing on the sand. We missed our guy; we doted over every dog we ran into on the beach. We had finally found the perfect place to take Bau for his first trip to the beach. The night before the trip, we realized that we were total nerds. How can we have to pack so much stuff for just one dog? His bag was overflowing with towels, treats, toys of all sorts, balls, bowls, brush, etc. The morning of, we excitedly woke up, piled in the SUV and started our 2 hour trek down. This would be the hardest part. Bauer doesn’t lie down in the car at all. He sits and leans by the passenger side door. He will only stick his head out the window when we’re driving slow or stopped. We tried rolling the window down a few times on Rt. 42, but he wasn’t a big fan of going 70 miles an hour. I’ve never seen his ears flap like that, nor his eyelids. We stopped at the Frank Farley rest stop which has an area for dogs. Playtime was on for a bit, then back in the car; Wildwood or bust. Taking the same roads I took 20 years earlier, our discussion revolved around what we thought his reaction would be. He’s never been on a beach before, nor ever seen or heard the ocean. How would he react to the new feeling of sand on his paws? As excited as we were to see his reaction, we were also worried. This would be the biggest, unfenced area he’d even been in off the leash (or OTL as we’ve shortened it to). I think every dog owner’s worst nightmare is to see a wagging tail and two rear paws happily rocketing off over the horizon. Upon finally reaching the 2nd Ave. beach in North Wildwood, his head perked up. He couldn’t see the beach over the dunes or the seawall. His nose smelled the ocean air; his ears heard the waves’ crash for the very first time. We went to the corner, and lead him up the steps. Somewhere in the background, I swear I could hear Ride of the Valkyries as the ocean opened up to Bau. An anxious look to us was followed by him pulling us on the
leash to get to the beach. As we stepped onto the beach, Bauer had an odd prance as he stepped on the damp sand. We put our bag down, and nervously looked at each other. It was time, quite literally, to release the hound. My wife Tara slowly bent over to unhook his leash. Over the ocean, we both heard the loud click that signified Bauer was on his own. What would he do? For a second he looked up at us. He took off in wide circles around us, happily romping in his newfound freedom. We took a new squeaky ball and heaved it down the beach. He took off after it, returned it to us then looked around. He wasn’t nervous or scared, and neither were we. We played fetch with him on the beach; or at least his version of fetch. He’s not so much of a Labrador retriever as he is Labrador chaser. Soon, he tired of fetch and started to explore. Our attention turned to the ocean. Bauer is a bit odd around water. He really likes the water, once you get him into it. He has no problem running into the dirtiest creek or stream he can find. He will approach a pool nervously and I have to nudge him to get him in. I think it’s because dogs must fear any illusion of actually getting clean. Once he gets in, he’s fine and you can’t get him out. I love the ocean, and would love to see Bauer enjoy it too. We encourage him to enter, but we’ve made a severe shoobie error. Neither of us actually thought to bring down flip flops. He’s happy to follow us down to the water’s edge. As the tide approaches, we slowly back off not to get our sneakers wet. As we retreat, so does Bau. D’oh! We’ve taught him to be scared of the ocean. Optimistic tosses of his favorite squeaky are of no enticement. Out of the blue, he looks down. The sand invites a bad habit. One paw digs then the other. Another second as both paws take brief bursts digging in the sand. His head jerks up as he looks to us expecting to be scolded. “No, it’s OK, Bau,” Tara says,” you can dig all you want at the beach.” Thus he commences the digging. Mad digging. Mad, primordial digging. Bauer’s front paws become a blur as sand rapidly flies out from
five mile length. We ate boardwalk pizza hanging out the back of the SUV as Bauer recharged. We returned to the beach, where Bauer would uncannily pick a certain spot to dig and find a shell. If only he could do this with precious metals. We had one last hurrah OTL on the northern part of the island. The time came to pack up and head home. Bauer was finally beat, as evidenced by him barely being able to jump up into the backseat. He was one tired pup on the ride home. Still refusing to lie down, he’d rest his chin on the ledge where the window meets the door. Occasionally, his eyes would close. Yea, I think he had a good time. I know my wife and I had a great time. The few halcyon summers I spent in Wildwood played an extremely important part in my youth. I’m glad I got to share it with them. And I am glad that we were able to hopefully give Bauer the same sort of experience.
beneath his belly. Just to rub it in, he will only dig near the towel, making sure to cover it in sand. I never knew dogs could snicker till now. After plenty of time running OTL, we decided to leash him and stroll down the beach. Bauer happily walked by our side, constantly distracted by all the new sights, smells and sounds. He was great when numerous people came up to pet him. He was able to greet fellow beach dogs like he was a local. A few times, Bauer would test his bravery by edging down to the water, but the tide would always win. Looking back, I suppose this is a best case scenario, because the last thing I’d want to see is him swimming away and me having to chase him in my sweatpants and hoodie. Total shoobie move. Like his namesake Jack Bauer, our Bauer had boundless energy. We spent hours on the beach this day, surely walking more than the

WILDWOOD Memories of my mother
BY JEAN SMITH ROWAND a lifetime Wildwood by-the-sea Vacationer
Sometimes Mom and Dad felt they hadn’t accomplished as much in this life as others, but this large, beautiful family is quite a heritage. They were loved by this large family and are missed. What greater legacy could you leave?
Catherine’s Chocolate Chip Cookies Cream - 1/2 cup Spry (Crisco) 1/2 cup white sugar 1/4 cup dark brown sugar Add 1 egg Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Add 1/2 teaspoon salt Add 1 cup flour Add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 16 oz. bag of chocolate chips
My Mother lived by herself for 23 years after my father, Paul, died in 1986, supporting herself, while helping others, through the sewing she did from her home.

Note: The marshland in background is now the SuperFresh parking lot.
My Mother, Catherine Smith, was a strong sensible woman who believed that she, and we, could do anything that needed to be done. She seldom wore her emotions on her sleeve, but was very proud of her 3 children, 10 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. Her love of us was shown in the countless things she did for us. No one could out-give Catherine. No matter what the occasion or problem, she was there to help. No plate, brought to share at a gathering, was ever sent back empty. She made sure to buy the grandchildren’s first pair of shoes, made sure they had school supplies for their first day. When it came time for vacations, Nan gave each child a bit of money so that they could buy something for themselves. She would caution, “Don’t bring me anything. I don’t need anything,” but would be delighted when presented with a box of fudge or a bottle of Manishevitz wine. Even later in her life when macular degeneration would take most of her eyesight, Nan made her much-loved chocolate chip cookies for each and every affair, especially birthday parties. Catherine loved the beach, beginning with her excursions to North Wildwood alone, taking the train from North Philadelphia, when she was about 16. She
sey, where we lived. This gave my Mother help on the beach and also allowed my parents to go to the Nut Hut or perhaps Zaberer’s for a meal and some relaxation. By the time my sister, Cathy, arrived in 1945, trips to the shore happened less often.
1943, Catherine A. Neidhardt Smith at 228 W. 25th Ave.
worked in her parent’s corner store to make money for the trips. Friends of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. King, owned a building with two apartments at 228 West 25th Street. For $1 a day, Mrs. King supplied lunch upon arrival, a chance to change and shower after the beach, and served dinner before the ride back home. In order to rent out both units, Mrs. King stayed in a small shack next door. The shack had no plumbing, so she went to the one of the apartments when necessary. Catherine and Paul continued to visit and vacation in Wildwood after they were married. As children were added to the family, my brother Bill in 1940 and me in 1942, a baby sitter often accompanied us. It might have been my Mother’s younger sister, Betty, or a neighbor, Louise, from East Camden, New Jer-
I have an early memory of a hurricane hitting North Wildwood in the 1940’s and of the water rising in the street and my wooden bucket floating away! Some of the photos my parents took are featured here. I cherish wonderful, more recent memories of my days at the beach with my still growing family. Hopefully, we will continue to enjoy the shore for many more years!
We have some old pictures, but know little about them because Catherine didn’t talk much about things that happened in her life or how she grew up. Before her heart attack in 2009, she began telling me about some of the events that shaped her life, but never got to explain what exactly drew her to the sun and sand of the Jersey shore. We can only gather by the wonderful pictures that she loved Wildwood. Theses were included in the July 2010 Bathing Beauties edition of “Sun-by-the-Sea.” Catherine and Paul instilled in all of us a love of sun, sand and sea. Even though there were years when a beach vacation was not possible for them, many in the family now look forward to spending time at the beach. My mother loved to hear the stories and see the pictures as my growing family joined in the summer fun on an annual 2 week vacation to North Wildwood. Some days there were 18 of us in one place! What fun!

We here at The Sun, proudly report local hero Matt Szczur and the Chicago Cubs have signed a $1.5 million contract, preventing Villanova’s wide receiver from pursuing an NFL career (Major League Football scouters remain interested in Matt should he change his mind). The 5-foot-11, 205pound outfielder originally signed to the Cubs in June 2010, with the agreement of him finishing out his studies at Villanova University this year. Matt, having played three different minor league teams in the Cubs system, started his professional career with a 21-game hitting streak. The righthanded batter and center fielder by trade is considered remarkably fast. He hit .347 in 25 minor league games. According to an MLB source, Matt, who was living in Arizona during Spring Training, will start the 2011 season in Season A Peoria. He isn’t expected to return to his Lower Cape May County home until after the season is over in September.

First, I would like to extend apologies from our staff and executive board for any inconvenience that the cancellation of our annual post card show may have caused. We had a very low response from dealers because many of them had already committed to other shows. We hope to remedy the situation for next year and try not to conflict with other north Jersey events. You may think that we hibernate here on the island during the winter months, but we do keep busy. In fact the museum was honored by the New Jersey Historical Commission for our role in “gathering, preserving and interpreting the history of the Wildwoods.” The award was presented at the 27th annual NJ History Conference at Monmouth University. Dr. Joe Salvatore, a former “Wildwood boy” gave a glowing speech about the Wildwoods before presenting the award to Phyllis Bethel, our vice-president, and treasurer Maryellen Shields. We were recognized as being a “valuable resource to local school groups, civic organizations and various researchers who have used its rich collections free of charge.” We are very proud. Bringing you up-to-date on our staff: after many years of service, Bob Scully resigned as curator. We accepted his resignation with regret, but Bob will continue on the executive board as his time will allow. We also had to accept a resignation from one of our young, up and coming members, Mike Eagan. Mike was on our staff a short time, and proved to be a loyal, enthusiastic, and helpful member by assisting on our Fun Facts project. Mike had to re-locate because of a job opportunity. While he was here, we worked with Patrick Rosenello of the Wildwood Boardwalk Special Improvement District. The SID had a state-of-the-art, PA system installed on the Boardwalk, and together we came up with what they are calling “Wildwood Fun Facts”. About every half
hour throughout the summer on the Boardwalk, you will hear some “fun facts” about a recording artist of the 50s or 60s, and then they will play one of their top songs. Mike recruited his friend, Rich Fennessy, a former radio personality to do the “voice-overs” and they turned out fantastic. AND, to top it off, the Wildwood Historical Society will be getting their “plug” in. Listen for it this summer. Last, but not least, our manager/historian Bob Bright and his dog, Zoe retired. Bob was so good at his job because he lived the history here. He was born just across the street from the museum, and growing up he worked delivering appliances and then heating oil for his family’s businesses. He could recall families and properties at the drop of a name. We will miss his stories regarding local lore, but also about his colorful family’s antics. Happy retirement, Bob! We continue to accept artifacts as it relates to our island’s history. Jerry MacDonald, from Wildwood Crest, was in the business of providing photos of trains and trolleys. Very recently, he dropped off a box containing hundreds of slides for our archives. We plan to have them scanned and put on a DVD with the help of my retired photographer friend, Tom Kinnemand. Tom is presently recuperating from triple by-pass surgery, and this will give him something to do while he’s rehabbing. Get well soon, Tom! Don’t forget, we resume summer hours on June 15. We will be open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. “Mona” will be in charge most of the week, and “Phyllis” will fill in on Saturdays. We are closed Sundays and national holidays. Until next time . . . . . be happy and be well!

“Well done is better than well said.” ~Benjamin Franklin, {lived out by Bill Neill} Many people today have hobbies. Running, knitting, reading. However not many people have a true craft, a skill. Clarence William Neill, known in these parts as Bill, has a true gift and skill with chip carving. Bill was born May 6, 1934. He spent his life as a glazer, working with glass for Wildwood Glass and then later for the union. He worked on many of the hotels, motels and buildings from here to Philadelphia, including the glass on Philadelphia skyscrapers, and the mirrors on the Hamilton Mall Macy’s. He built his own house, and has grown up in North Wildwood and has lived in Cape May County his whole life. Bill met his wife when he was out one evening, and he noticed her standing with one of her friends. They had many things in common, from chess playing to being part of large families. Bill is number 10 of 11 children, and Eleanor number 8 of 18 children. They married in 1953, and have a happy life together. He continued working as a glazer until he developed cancer of the esophagus in the early 1990’s. After going through treatments, Bill’s doctor kept shaking his hand and saying “You are one lucky fella,” and lucky he was, since only 5% survive and live to be cancer free, Bill being one of them. He retired from glazing soon after. Bill always enjoyed his job, but saved his creativity and passion for his hobbies. Growing up, he loved chess playing. Bill has always been self taught- he got himself several books on chess playing, and learned from them and through playing other people. He entered competitions, and won several trophies for his skills. His wife Eleanor also was a chess player, and they have black and white photos of their proud faces holding their trophies decorating the walls of their home. Bill taught a chess class at Cape May County Tech for several years, and still is active in the chess club at Lower Regional school. Their home is a wonderful tribute to Bill’s skills at his other passion, chip carving. His entire house is adorned with his practice and completed pieces of woodworking. He started small, with napkin holders. Over a period of 18 years, Bill worked up to an 8 by 4 foot sign he made for a church, and a wonderful toy chest he carved for his great granddaughter. Throughout his house you notice his work- napkin holders, a different design carved into each side. Magazine holders, trash cans. Quilt rack, music box, jewelry box, sewing table, and bigger items like a chimney cabinet and deacon bench. In his yard he built a wishing well and lighthouse. Everywhere is evidence of his careful, detailed wood working skill.

Bill & Eleanor with their Chess trophies. Bill taught Chess at the CMC Vo Tech high school and is a local Chess Champion of Cape May County.
He began chip carving when he retired, in the early 1990’s. He came home with a book, just like with chess and followed directions. He bought the tools it told you to, sketched out the patterns, and tried out the techniques. “You get a book, and they tell you what knives to get, and how to sharpen, and how to hold the knife. Then they give you patterns, and tell you how to do it.” The funny thing is he can learn anything from a book and teach himself, but teaching others is much more difficult. He took a liking to it, and continued, moving on to more and more complex items. His workshop is a homey shed, the walls filled with glass jars containing screws, nuts, bolts, and other odds and ends. Each tool is neatly hung on their nails, and carvings and other plaques and small projects are displayed on the walls. There are books and neatly labeled drawers under the work tables and boards, chunks and scraps of wood piled in every corner. The whole shop is covered in a perpetual layer of wood dust. He works with mostly pine, but also balsa and sassafras. Bill doesn’t have any particular themes, but does a little bit of everything, from carved animals, nautical objects, Irish and patriotic sayings, to rosettes. One of the most wonderful things about Bill’s skill as a chip carver, is that he is not selfish. He makes pieces for people he knows, and sells some pieces occasionally. His work can be found in the Middle Township Community Center, where he has several ornate sign boards throughout the building, and also the large welcome sign for a church in Elwood NJ. He doesn’t just work on projects and objects useful for himself, but he expands his skill and makes items for his house and wife. Another wonderful thing about his work is that while it looks professionally done, when you look closely at it, it has the feel and appearance of something handmade, something labored over, something someone put care and attention into. You can see the meticulous strokes that were hewed into the wood, like looking closely at a painting and seeing brush strokes. Bill and Eleanor’s home feels very comfortable and personal, because so many parts of it are handmade and one of a kind. Bill is a quiet, charming gentleman. He has a discernable calmness, that patient quality some people possess and other wish they did. This quality no doubt helped him acquire all these skills from books and stick with his hobbies until he really got the hang of it. It isn’t everyday you meet someone who is talented, skilled and also humble about it. When you meet someone who is amazing like that, they are not forgotten easily. Bill Neill is one of these people.

“There are two worlds: the world that we can measure with line and rule, and the world that we feel with our hearts and imagination.”
THE GOOD OLD DAYS . . . as best as I can remember BY AL LOVE
1942, 3 yr. old Al Love with his parents, Al and Anna Love
1942, 3 yr. old Al Love and his 7 yr. old sister Ann, with Uncle Gil Scott and Aunt Mary
2005, Al and Sandra Love with their granddaughter Delia
In 1934, my family bought our summer home on Glenwood Ave. in Wildwood, five years before I was born. Most of my 71 years I have spent the summers in Wildwood. So my boyhood memories go back a long way. Our property tax that first year was $12. for the year, a lot different from today. The food, meat and drinks in those first years were kept in our ice box. Every few days the ice wagon would pull up and we would buy a block of ice to keep things cool. The kids would chase after the ice truck to gather ice chips to suck on hot days. I remember the gas meter in the kitchen. You inserted a quarter into the meter and this would provide gas to cook on the stove and heat up the water heater. Then the trip from Philadelphia to our summer home on a Friday night took about four hours, with a trip over the Delaware River on the Ben Franklin Bridge or the ferry boat to Camden, a gas stop, and maybe an ice cream stop at a farmer’s market along the DelSea Drive. We knew we were close when we smelled the bunker factory coming into Rio Grand Ave., or driving past the old shacks on stilts and over the wooden rickety bridge into North Wildwood. Earliest memories of the 40’s were sitting on the beach with my mother and sister and watching the military planes from the Cape May County Airport flying out to sea. The lead plane would be towing a long wire with a target at the end. Soon there would be sounds of machine guns with the rat da tat firing at the trailing banner far off shore. I would not have liked being the pilot who towed the target. In those days my sister and I would collect empty soda bottles on the beach at the end of the day. We would return them for the 2¢ deposit. A fun day would be seeing the wrestlers who performed at the Convention Hall on the boardwalk come down to the beach and put on an exhibition to draw a crowd for the night’s matches. The beach day would usually end with Captain Dutch Hoffman and his lifeguards lowering the American Flag to the sound of God Bless America over the boardwalk speakers. Everyone stopped what they were doing, stood up and proudly held there hand over their heart. My son Jeff would later work as a life guard on the beach. Those old coal passenger trains were exciting to see rumbling over the trestle bridge on the bay and heading to the train station at Oak and NJ Ave. With smoke, coal and timber burning they would hiss and puff, and you could hear and smell them a mile away. At the station on a weekend there were several excursion trains lined up on the side tracks and the station house was busy with visitors. As a youngster I would take my wagon there and help the people with their bags to walk to the boarding houses for a tip.
In the 50’s there was a small bus that ran from the bay in West Wildwood past our house and finished at the bus station at Oak and the Boardwalk. It would drop you off anywhere along the way and cost about a quarter. Took about 20 minutes up and 20 back. One Saturday night our cat Rusty ran into the street and used up its last nine lives, as he was hit by the bus. He was about 12 years old at the time. We buried him in our back yard where there is a rose bush today. As a teen, my friends and I would go down to Maxwell Field to play baseball. It was named after Reds Maxwell a long time city commissioner who served with Commissioner Charles Masciarella and Mayor Ralph James (who always wore a bow tie) at that time. Before Maxwell Field we played at the little field across from the railroad station, next to the log cabin and where the Lions Center is today. Our left field wall was the Terminal Café. There was a teacher Ms. Dellapolie at Wildwood High who lived in a house next to the fence in center field and our balls would fly over into her yard and she would keep them until the next school day. Since my local friends Rich Snyder, Frankie Breslin, Harry Merkel, and Ed Millard had her for English class, we decided it was best to play elsewhere instead of facing her and asking for our balls back. At night there were baseball games at Maxwell Field with the fans sitting in the wooden stands in back of home plate. They charged about 50 cents to get into the park to pay for the umpires and balls. Of course we climbed over the wooden fence to get in. Some of the teams that I remember were the Wildwood Islanders , Crest Cardinals, coached by Scoop Taylor, with all local guys such as Don Twist, Leo Grande, Peterson, Osborne, Spiegel, and the three Hall brothers, there was the Cape May Coast Guard team, and a club called the House of David with all the players sporting full beards from Philadelphia. Good games under the lights. At the end of West Wildwood there was a building sitting on pilings on the bay. As kids we would go inside and play pin ball, other games, have ice cream and candy and just hang out. They also rented out rowboats for fishing and crabbing in the bay. It was a fun place and I think it was washed away in a storm. In the 50’s my father and uncle loved fishing and they would take me along to the Villas to fish in the Delaware Bay. In those days you rented a rowboat and the operator would tow you out about a mile and leave you anchored. You had one oar and you would raise it in the sky when you wanted to be towed in. Well my

father and uncle got there money’s worth, and we would stay out there all day until about 5 o’clock. Regardless if I got sick or not. There was a motor boat which came by and sold sandwiches, beer and soda, and with what we packed in the cooler we never ran out of food or beer for about 8 hours. I can still see the turtles swimming by, and catching weakfish, flounder, sea bass, sting rays, eels, blowfish, sea robins, and sharks. The fish were plentiful and we shared our catch with our neighbors. Growing up in the summers at the shore meant working for spending money for us kids. My earlier jobs included selling newspapers on the beach, then as a beach boy renting out beach umbrellas and chairs. Then my career took off when my good friend Richie Snyder got me in as a bus boy, dish washer and soda jerk for a few summers at Jackson’s Coffee Shop, at Oak & Pacific, for owner Jack Bickel. My sister Ann worked as a baby sitter, boardwalk sales, and swimming in the water show at Sportland Pier. My brother Bill worked at the basketball hoops toss on the boards, and as a busboy at Groff’s Restaurant. Brother Jim worked on the beach also selling papers and renting out umbrellas and chairs. We received a cent and a half for each paper sold. In 1963, I finished a tour with the Army and was hired by the Wildwood Police Dept. I finished the Police Academy and soon was partnered with Officer Dominic Romeo. So it was Officers Romeo and Love sharing the same car. We made the local news paper about once a week with writer Henry Lapidus who was also the Justice of the Peace in North Wildwood covering our exploits , The Philadelphia Inquirer wrote an article by Rose Dewolf, and we made Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. That is a story for another time. So these are some of my early memories of Wildwood. We still have our house. My father gave it to me when he was 85 years old, and I plan to pass it down to my two sons when my memories have faded. There is something to say About The Good Old Days. Al Love Look for more wonderful Wildwood memories to come, written by Al Love. “Romeo & Love” will be featured in the September ‘11 issue.

This is a semi-annual event of pilots gathering to enjoy their sport of wind powered vehicles; however this event had special meaning. Proceeds from Saturday nights raffle were being given to the Wildwood Catholic High School to start a power kite club for the kids. This will enable Joe Catanoso to teach the students safety and skills of flying a power kite. Along with the proceeds, there were kind pilots that donated used gear to be used by the power kite club.

Planning your summer vacation? …so many choices. SCENARIO 1. Checking the internet. Wildwood looks like a a fabulous place! Beautiful beaches, boardwalk, world renown amusement piers, nightclubs, fine dining, beautiful hotels, and tons of activities for the kids. . . photos of happy, tanned and fit families swimming and walking the boards. So you book your stay, pack your bathing suits, and arrive for a week of fun in the sun. After you’ve unpacked, you take the family for a walk on the boards to see the sights and get that much anticipated cardio workout going. You walk past the shops and get a chuckle out of all of the kitschy souvenirs, the shirt shops with their crazy displays, and the carnival atmosphere of the boardwalk games. The amusement piers are looming in the distance, and your step gets a little faster, and you’re feeling great and motivated and the kids are so excited, and you’re starting to feel like one of those smiling families in the photos and suddenly ….PIZZA…not just PIZZA, but FRIES AND CHEESEBURGERS AND HOT DOGS AND SOFT PRETZELS AND ICE CREAM AND SALT WATER TAFFY (does anyone really eat that stuff??) OH AND FUDGE…LOTS AND LOTS OF FUDGE…EEK...FREE SAMPLES!! …keep walking, walking, eyes front, try not to breathe. You tell your family that you have a great idea. Save the boardwalk for later and hit the beach! Thankfully, after spending 2 hours on the boards, your bikini still fits. With new found inspiration you march onto the beach, feeling your toes in the warm sand, and enjoying the sea air. While immersed in your book, a family takes up the spot right next to you. You smile at the poor dad who just lugged an array of beach stuff through the hot sand. He looks like he could use a cold drink. He opens the cooler and pulls out... a HOAGIE…not just one, but 4 HOAGIES…one for each! You make a quick run to the water, a nice long swim will be wonderful. Nearing the edge, you are suddenly assaulted by the FUDGY WUDGY man…FUDGY WUDGY, GET YOUR FUDGY WUDGY, ICE CREAM HERE!!!! The ocean is your escape, so you dive into the refreshing clear water. When you pop up, it’s there …still there …FUDGY WUDGY…GET YOUR FUDGY WUDGY…oh my! has he followed you into the ocean??? Is that ice cream carrier a flotation device???????? After the lifeguards have revived you, you return to your hotel, to sit by the pool. Relaxing on your chaise and sipping bottled water, you suddenly hear bells clanging…a truck approaches and you cannot believe your eyes…it’s a FRUIT TRUCK…there is a man selling FRUIT!...Holding back tears of joy, you approach the truck and make your purchase. The next day is rainy, so your family takes in a movie, while you stay behind to wait for the FRUIT TRUCK. The deck is empty, except for you, your umbrella, and the lifeguard who is folding up chairs. With a huge smile, he walks over to inform you that the FRUIT TRUCK doesn’t come when it rains. When your family returns from the movie, you pack up and go home. SCENARIO 2. You book your vacation, arrive in Wildwood, and thoroughly enjoy all it has to offer...the boardwalk, the beach, even the FUDGY WUDGY man. That is what vacation is about, enjoying yourself. Your gym and diet will still be there when you return home, maybe with a few more pounds, but more importantly, many great memories. A smart idea would be to visit the Gym at 10th Street while you’re here. I am there almost every day and throughout the summer, meet many vacationers who get the best of both worlds, enjoying themselves while getting in a workout. For your convenience, the gym is open from 5 a.m., until 10 p.m. Hope to see you there!

“If you believe everything that you read, you better not read.” -Japanese proverb In the early Spring last year, I went to visit one of my two ex-wives at her townhouse in Pompano Beach. During the sunny blue days I biked, walked the beach, and read by the pool, taking a dip whenever the heat moved me, while Suze was off on her new job as a writer for a local weekly newspaper. We ate out every night, reliving old times with a longer, softer view, actually more comfortable than when we’d been married. We laughed a lot, too, and were able to be honest in a way we hadn’t when we were married; there was nothing to lose now, and we weren’t keeping score any more. We just enjoyed and appreciated each other. One day I was wearing a tie-dyed tank top that Suze admired, and I told her that I’d gotten it from this old hippie who sold them at the flea market on the south end of the Wildwood Boardwalk every summer. I gave it to her when I left, and said that I’d get another one. I actually looked forward to getting a new tank top because the tie-dyes this guy did were really cool and choosing one was like shopping for a work of art. I was on my morning Boardwalk bike ride when the first flea market of the season was open and there was my guy, skinny, bearded, pony-tailed, tanned like an Arab – and happy. When I’d bought the other tank top, what I’d remembered most was how happy he’d been, as if selling tie-dyed shirts was the greatest job in the world. I parked my bike along the rail and moseyed over to his booth. When he saw me, he gave me a big grin, held up his hand
and in the foreground a streamlined flying saucer seemed to be flying off the gossamer cloth right into my eyes. I blinked and felt me eyebrows raise in astonishment. “Want it?” he asked. “It’s airbrushed. I got it a long time ago in Laguna Beach from this bunch of airbrush freaks called the Spray Blasters. I used it up and now I have to pass it on. It’s magic, you know.” up for a high-five, and greeted me like a long lost friend. “Hey, how’ve you been, man? Another year, right? Ain’t it great, all this? Whattaya need?” “Another tank top. I gave my ex-wife the other one.” “Great! Good for you! More blessed to give than to receive, you know? Help yourself. I dyed a fresh batch up just for you, babe. Look around. Take your time. We got the whole season, right?” I looked and then looked some more; they were all great, really cool. This old hippie was a tie-dying genius. I must have had a stumped look on my face because he came over and asked, “What’s up, man? Can’t make up your mind?”
“Well,” I said, “Once I was standing in my backyard and a cat I had then brought a mouse and dropped it at my feet. The cat had been gentle with it and the mouse was still alive and it was so scared that it was trembling all over. Then, all of a sudden, it just went poof! and disappeared. Like it was so scared it made itself vanish. The cat looked up at me and looked all around and scratched at the grass like the mouse might be buried, but it was gone. Poof! Gone.” “Wow, cool! What else?”
“Yeah,” I said. “I don’t know. They’re all great.”
“Once I had a girlfriend who lived in Benedict Arnold’s old house in Philly – not many people know he ever lived there – and one day this ball of light appeared in the garden and hovered there. We saw it from inside, but when we went out, it just disappeared.”
“Thanks, man. Hey, do you believe in magic?”
“Okay,” the guy said. “I have special tank top for you.”
“I do. Yeah. I do,” I answered.
He went into this beat-up old briefcase and brought out a plastic bag and took a tank top out of it, unfolded it, and held it up for me. It was striking, amazing really: on a deep blue background were planets and comets, almost in 3-D, like in deep space,
“You ever seen any? Any magic?” “Actually, I have. Twice.” “Tell me,” he said, moving closer. “Let me in on it.”

“Jeez, it’s beautiful. It’s really stunning. I love it. But what do you mean you used it up?”
“You get three wishes with this shirt. Then you gotta pass it on to somebody who believes in magic. I just used my last wish.” “What was it?” I asked. “That’s another thing: you can’t tell anybody the wishes or it won’t work. And you have to have the shirt on when you make the wish. You still want it?” “Sure. Who wouldn’t? And I have a wish all ready. How much?” “No charge, brother,” he said. “The magic belongs to the people. Let me put it in a bag for you.” So away I went, the proud owner of a unique, one-of-a-kind, magic tank top. That night, I road-tested it. My beautiful calico cat, Ingrid, had been missing for almost two months. Before I went to bed, I put on the tank top, wished for Ingrid’s safe return, and fell asleep. In the wee, small hours, I heard a meow on the roof near my window. There was Ingrid, safe and sound. I opened the window and she hopped in like she’d never been gone, curled up at the foot of the bed, and went to sleep. That was almost a year ago – and I still have two more wishes. Bob Ingram’s writing has appeared in every issue of The SUN since its inception in April, 2004. He has published a volume of 18 short stories, titled “Sun Songs: Wildwood Stories.” Ingram also co-wrote, narrated, and co-produced the documentary film “Boardwalk: Greetings From Wildwood By-the-Sea,” which has been shown frequently on PBS.

“The Wildwoods are an endless source of material,” he says. “A simple walk on the boardwalk or breakfast at McDonald’s can turn into a story that imbues itself with a kind of magical realism. dear I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the gorgeous *Seaside Greetings painting on the cover page of the Nov/Dec edition of the Five Mile Beach SUN. I was so glad I picked one of these up while dining in the Wildwoods recently. The depiction brought back a beautiful memory of my husband’s favorite spot as well at 2nd St. jetty he loved to go to fish. His name is David (he passed 20 yrs. ago at age 37) and his family are long time residents in North Wildwood and this is where him and I met and fell in love. Thank you very much for the memory. You are an amazing Artist, Editor and Publisher and I just had to express my gratitude and be part of your fanclub:) Respectfully, Kathryn Golden p.s. I think this inspirational painting would make an ideal holiday postcard. EDITOR NOTE: Look for our Christmas cards for sale in next issue!
Dear Sun, Your article on Abbott’s dairy brings to mind the three summers I worked on the ‘walk. Those were the years 1951, ‘52, & ‘53. I worked at Margurite’s Fudge Shop on the corner of Spencer Ave. and the Boardwalk. One side of the store was devoted to candy, chocolates. fudge and salt water taffy. The other to ice cream. There was counter and table service. That is whereI worked. Margurite Renne and her husband Paul owned the business. Paul was also a conductor on the Penna. R.R. run to Camden/Phila. Every day I would call the Abbott’s Dairy and order ice cream~ “Jane Logan’s.” Our daily order was 24 or more “cans” (2 1/2 Gal. size) of various flavors. On weekends we ordered 30 or more! On Sunday we ordered twice! The first order on Sunday was for about 30, later we/I ordered another 15 to 30. The ice cream was usually delivered in an hour or two. Ah yes, I remember it well! to paraphrase the song, “Those were the days my friend.” ~RICHARD J. DIETZ, N. WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/ THE SUN BY THE SEA DEAR SUN, I am a summer local in Wildwood and I LOVE reading The Sun! It is the best newspaper in all of Wildwood! I just started college this year at James Madison University in Virginia (which is 5 hours from my home) I am always thinking about summer and how much I miss all those lazy summer days! Whenever I am feeling down, and miss home I come here online and read The Sun! It makes me feel better. Wildwood is truly my favorite place on the entire earth and I am already looking forward to Summer 2011! ~Lauren AdornoI pictured above in Wildwood by-the-sea
FAN US ON FACEBOOK The Sun by the sea Thank you for The Sun by the Sea. It keeps getting better and better. There are so many things that trigger memories for me. You are accomplishing your purpose with a BANG! Love your art and the sayings at the top of each page. And, as always, I cut some of them out to think about later....and to share with friends. Wonderful letter to you on the back cover. He is right. You are doing meaningful work. Regards, ~ MARGE GUZIAK, COLORADO

DEAR SUN, I just love The SUN!! It puts its pages around me and gives me a hug! I always look forward to each issue. Love, Dolly McGee DEAR SUN, I’ve been going to Wildwood for 48 years! Love it and love your paper, it’s the first thing I look for to take to my room when I get there. It is a great resource for me to get to know all about the Wildwoods. I stay at the Roman Holiday now. When we were growing up in the 60’s thru the 80’s we always stayed at the Trylon (one James Plaza now). We knew the old owners the James’ and they had small kids, they used to let us go swimming at night, we stayed there even after we had kids, until it became a condo association. We love the Roman Holiday now and that is the family place to go, all our kids are grown and come down as much as they can, with their significant others. I remember the puppet theatre on the boardwalk, the glass blower, and Hunt’s Pier was our favorite!! My parents went to Wildwood in the 1940’s and 50’s as teens. They went to see a lot of big name bands down there. My dream is to someday live there! When I found Ralph Grassi’s site on the internet I was so happy, then I bought some of his statues and had the privlege of meeting him to pick it up. {www.funchase.com} Then I read the wonderful article “An Oscar for Ralph” by Bob Ingram in your paper!! I’ve been hooked to The Sun ever since! If I can dig up some old photos I will send them. I have more recent ones online im sure!! ~Lynne Melchiore Wells

Michelle & her mother in a boardwalk photo booth days after she was born. {Moments by Michelle}
I was born on 4th of July weekend 1973, it was Saturday morning, the 7th, to be exact. Within days, I was making my first of countless trips from the suburbs of Philadelphia (Delco and as an adult, Chestco) to Wildwood-by-the-sea, NJ. At the time, my paternal grandparents were renting the first floor of a big old seashore house on the 100 block of West Pine. My parents actually met “under the boardwalk” in the summer of ‘69. After my mom’s Prom in the spring of 1970 , they drove to the shore the next day. It’s as if Wildwood is part of my DNA. I could go on and on. In June 2005 I married in St. Ann’s Church and had photos of my husband and I at the Hereford lighthouse before heading off to our reception in Cape May. You just can’t put a price on capturing that moment in time by the sea, I believe in providing affordable memories for all families. See my ad below. ~Michelle

In the mid sixties, a perfect day for me consisted of a good wrestling match with my brother, combined with a Jerry Butler or Peter, Paul & Mary album playing in the background. The only thing that could make me happier was if a Barbara Stanwyk, or Ma & Pa Kettle movie was on TV that afternoon. Add to this mix, a huge pot of gravy simmering on the stove, a pound cake baking in the oven, and a Phillies game on in the evening, and you had a perfect recipe. In my adolescence, a brother just proved to be an annoyance. He was someone that got more attention than me, (or so I thought), and he was someone that did his best to try and embarrass me in front of my friends~ especially if it was a special date. You know those horrible nicknames that siblings call each other that should never be uttered outside the household - well, they weren’t only uttered...they were shouted. But, even so, I never failed to come to his defense when it came to outside forces. As I came into my early twenties, I noticed a shift taking place, as actual friendships started to develop between us. We were going to each other for advice, and even occasional confidence building. As time moved forward, a complete change had transpired. My brother, who I had many times had fist fights with, and tattled on, and stood up for... was now my protector. And from then on, my brother has been there for me every minute of every day and night. I don’t even have to ask, he’s already there. And his compassion and generosity doesn’t end with me. I have literally witnessed my brother take the shirt off his back to give to someone. There’s not a week that goes by without me hearing the words “You have such a great brother” from someone I run into. My brother has been as much like a father to me as he is to his own children. At my age some women may be reluctant to admit this, ashamed it may show a sign of weakness or dependency. But, this is not so with me. I am grateful and consider myself one of the luckiest sisters in the world. Did I mention my brother’s name? His name is Chuck, Anthony, Billy and Joe. You see, I’m fortunate enough to have four of these men in my life. And to speak of one of my brothers, is to speak of all four of them.
1977~ Joe, Billy & Chuck “Always pranksters”

Goes to Hollywood 2011 LATE SPRING MOVIE GUIDE by Meg Corcoran
Racing closer to balmy days in their summerlovin’ Cars (2), our cast of characters travels tranquilly along the coast, picking up wandering shore seekers along the sandy way. The difficult, but animal-loving, Bridesmaids happily make room for The Beaver and Mr. Popper’s Penguins, who they discovered dodging bikers by the side of the road. Meanwhile, the Pirates of the Caribbean: (traveling locally) On Stranger Tide find our shoreline significantly more serene than their turbulent tropical seas. With an ocean view appearing majestically in sight, our big screen beauties realize they’ve arrived just in time to celebrate another dazzling summer by the sea!
content with simple waterpark days, before their marvel powers were formed.
Before celebrating at your nearest movie theater, please check your local listings for release date changes.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins (Jim Carrey, opens June 17th) quickly change the businessman’s life as he adjusts to being their caretaker while fighting their unhealthy love of boardwalk fare. Also stars Carla Gugino and Angela Lansbury.
Maid of Honor Annie (Kristen Wiig) yearns for a long beach get-a-way as she deals with an excited bride (Maya Rudolph) and annoying Bridesmaids (including Melissa McCarthy, opens May 13th) while planning each pre-wedding occasion. Comfortably settling in to summer at the shore, our cast heads to the local movie theater, where they find the ultimate selection of summer blockbusters. Relaxing on friendly territory, the X-Men: (lounge in) First Class theater seats, feasting on the finest films. Temperamental Judy Moody ultimately enjoys each big-screen adventure once she recovers from The (sugar) Hangover caused by 2 much concession stand treats. Sitting beside her is the name dropping Green Lantern, radiating peace and warmth while claiming to have personally battled each big screen villain . Within his climate (not to mention enemy) controlled aisle seat, he spends intermission pondering important matters like good (movies) versus evil (ones) and how to avoid unsightly tan lines on green skin. Searching his ever-present copy of The Tree of Life, he finds the answer to all of life’s pressing concerns, each of which he soon realizes can miraculously be soothed with a little summertime by the sea...

“He who does not look ahead remains behind.” ~ Spanish proverb Most local folks, vacationers and lighthouse lovers are aware of the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse in North Wildwood. The unique, Victorian style Lighthouse was designed by Paul J. Pelz, architect of the Library of Congress. It is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Buildings and is the only one of its kind on the east coast. Hereford was the first permanently occupied building on the island and its construction led to the birth of all of the Wildwood communities that exist today. The early Anglesea settlers sought shelter here during some horrific storms and the islands first religious services were held in the Lighthouse parlor. Since 1874, Herefords bright beacon has saved the lives of countless numbers of mariners traveling along the treacherous, shoal lined, coast of New Jersey. Even in 2011, it continues on as an active aid to navigation. During the last decade, the Lighthouse has been undergoing a meticulous, accurate restoration based on its original plans. In 2004, the project was awarded the New Jersey State Preservation Award. Since 1983, Hereford has been opened to the public as a museum that spotlights the life of a lighthouse keeper from the late 19th to the mid 20th century. Tens of thousands of visitors have toured the magnificent old building, bought souvenirs, attended special events, participated in the “Buy a Brick Campaign,” taken part in the annual Christmas ceremony and strolled through the Victorian cottage gardens. 750 dues paying members from all over the country help support this historic landmark. As the chairman of the “Friends of Hereford Inlet Lighthouse, I have to admit it has been many years of exhausting, never ending work but a total labor of love for myself, my fellow board members and our very small group of dedicated volunteers. I couldn’t think of a better cause than helping to preserve, promote and manage the most important historic building in the Wildwoods. It may not be common knowledge but just as much and just as important history occurred a stones throw away from Hereford Lighthouse. This history was very much interrelated with that of the Lighthouse. Just north and adjoining the Lighthouse property, where the State Police Station is today there existed 2 other organizations. The first was the U.S. Life Saving Service which had a station at that location from 1872 to 1915 (there was a primitive version of a life saving station near there as early as 1850) Like the Lighthouse Service, the Life Saving Service was in the business of saving lives and ships. The Lighthouse did it by warning - the Life Saving Station by rescue. A highly trained crew of 7 of the toughest, most fearless, men in the county, all expert boat men, lived at this station from fall to spring. They drilled every day in all of the various meth-

ods of life saving and walked lookout watches 24 hours a day. If a ship ran aground on one of the many sandbars near the Inlet, where the crashing waves over the shallow water can be treacherous, the vessel would eventually be battered to pieces. Once noticed the Life Saving crew would launch their surf boat into the breakers and them row out the one or 2 miles to the wreck. This could happen any time - on a sunny day, in a thick fog, in the middle of the night, in a January blizzard or in the middle of a northeaster or hurricane. Their motto was appropriately “you have to go out - you don’t have to come back” If they were unable to launch their boat, that had a small cannon (Lyle gun) from which they fired a weight with a light line attached. This would be aimed to fall across the sinking ship. The victims would then pull in this light line from shore which would have a pulley and a heavier line attached at the other end. Written instructions told them how to rig this up, high on a mast and the crew on shore would send out a “breeches buoy” rescue device. This was a life ring with pant legs attached. The line and pulley set up worked like one of the old fashion continuous clothesline. One by one each victim would sit inside the buoy and be pulled safely above the water to the beach. The Anglesea Life Saving crew were always very busy. There were over 60 major wrecks near the Inlet involving merchant schooners, commercial fishing boats and even huge steamships. Hundreds of incidents involving small boats were so frequent they were not even recorded. In 1915 the U.S. Coast Guard absorbed the duties of the Life Saving Service and moved into their old station. The sign above the boathouse doors now read “U.S. Coast Guard”. They would continue on with most of the same duties but with one important change. They were now a military group
charged with the duty of protecting our coastline. The government also declared that in the event of war, the Coast Guard would be put under the command of the Department of the Navy. This happened first in 1917 during WW I. German submarines prowled the east coast, stalking and lying in wait to torpedo defenseless merchant ships. Despite the Coast Guards vigilance, many ships were destroyed and many lives were lost. The merchant schooner Dorothy Barrett was even attacked and sunk within sight of the North Wildwood beach. Prohibition came along and the Coast Guard was in another war - that against the “rumrunners”. Numerous high speed pursuits often with an exchange of gunfire were quite common during these times. In 1939, a new Coast Guard “Life Boat Station” was erected. This is the building presently next to the Lighthouse and where the State Police are stationed. That same year, the Coast Guard absorbed the duties of the Lighthouse Service and the entire property was now Coast Guard territory. WW II came along, and for the second time they became an arm of the navy. Drilling and target practice were done daily. The beaches near the station still had banner planes flying, but not with advertisements. They were pulling paper targets for anti aircraft practice from the beach. In addition to lookouts and boat patrols, the Coast Guard now had a mounted beach patrol, in which men on horse back with carbine and side arms, trotted along Wildwoods beaches. The nearby Naval Air Station took advantage of the Inlet water as part of their training. Pilots in training were strapped into the cockpit of a Corsair fighter suspended from a crane. This was dropped below the waters surface and an officer with a stop watch timed the escape.
Once again, 25 years after WW I, German U boats became an even greater threat along the coast. So many merchant ships were taken by surprise that daily patrols went out looking for debris, fuel trails, survivors on life rafts and sadly, the oil soaked bodies of the dead. The war ended and the Coast Guard resumed its regular routine of assistance to ships in distress, rescues and marine law enforcement. 1964 saw the beginning of the automation of lighthouses and Hereford became one of the first. The Coast Guard vacated the Life Boat Station as well as the Lighthouse. Later that year a new organization, the N.J. Marine Police, moved into the building. The story continues of course, right to the present and history is still being made. As you can see the Lighthouse shared not just common ground with these other organizations but a common history as well. The sad fact and problem is the only part of this fascination history that is preserved and displayed for the public is that connected with the Lighthouse. Those of us, past and present stewards of Hereford Lighthouse have had a dream for many years. This dream is to acquire the old Life Boat Station and combine it (back) with the Lighthouse. This grouping of buildings would form one museum complex - “Historic Anglesea Maritime Village” We are optimistic enough to even have a detailed plan. The main building of the station would serve as the entranceway to the “village”. Here you would get your admission ticket and view the orientation video. The various rooms would feature displays telling the complete maritime history of Hereford Inlet which would include the Anglesea fishermen, the Life Saving Station, Coast Guard, Lighthouse, Marine Police, the Marine Services Bureau, as well as the North Wildwood Beach Patrol. The station house would also have a much larger gift shop which would be relocated from the Lighthouse. The boat house and maintenance garage would also be used to house interpretive displays of our maritime history. After finishing at the Life Boat Station, visitors would stroll over to the Lighthouse to tour there. Hereford at this point, would become a living history museum, much like the Physick Estate in Cape May. The Lighthouse keepers “wife”, in Victorian costume, would guide folks through the rooms furnished just like the Lighthouse family from 1880 was still living there. What about the State Police that currently occupy the Life Boat Station? This is the road block. No one is disregarding the importance of this division of Homeland Security. We want them to stay in Cape May County and their history, past and present, is just as important as the others I have briefly described.

Wrecked Schooner off the coast of Anglesea in the late 1800s Hereford Inlet CG Station, near Hereford Inlet Lighthouse {Anglesea, North Wildwood}. The station was built in 1849 and was moved in 1882 because of the threatening ocean. In 1888, a new station was built. The building onsite today dates from the 1936-1940 period. The station closed in 1964.

A relocation of this unit however, would be a Godsend for the Lighthouse and themselves. There has not been boat launching capability at the site since the early 1960’s. Vessels have to be taken by trailer to various public and private boat slips. In addition to this, the station is composed of 3 - 73 year old wood frame buildings, really not set up efficiently for a 21st century law enforcement agency. It’s an extremely antiquated setup for them and we have a constant fear that invasive “modernizing” of the buildings will occur and ruin the historic integrity of the station. Our current mission is to try to find a better location for the Police, somewhere on the water, that is agreeable to the Superintendent of the Marine Services Bureau. A major factor in this plan is, of course, money. We have support for this project from North Wildwoods Mayor & Council, many of our State political leaders, other historic sites and museums, retired Coast Guard, and thousands of signatures on a petition. Here’s hoping this article will get more supporters on board. Please spread the word. “If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” ~Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
CAPTAIN GARY’S Fishing Report WELCOME ANGLERS Man has the weather been the early story of the new fishing season so far. If You have been waiting for spring you missed it. It lasted two days to date. Hopefully the later part of our spring weather will improve the fishing. Remember fish have to eat regardless of wind, cooler temperatures, and rough seas. I ponder back to my youth to remember some great fishing, while confronting weather conditions, that today I would pull the covers over my head. I realize the tragic weather in the south with loss of life and whole communities to tornado activity puts our little issues in perspective. Free Bait • Instructions • Parking

Big Brother (Marine Fisheries) has allowed a minor increase in the fluke catch. It will extend the season helping some businesses hang on for dear life. Unfortunately, they closed sea bass and will not open it until July. This will make ocean fishing in May and June extremely difficult. I salute Congressman John Runyon on a proposed bill requiring Marine Fisheries to moderate some of their rigid regulations, and stop putting businesses in jeopardy with their aggressive approach to management of fish stocks. I wish him success with this effort. He has a good grasp on the industry and the impacts of poor polices by the federal government. I hope additional Congressional leaders jump on board and help redirect this agency’s policies. May is a fun month for exploring opportunities in fishing. All the various species of fish arrive during the month. Stripers and Drum in the Delaware Bay can be caught with clam bait. Fluke in the back waters with increasing numbers of Blues and Weakfish willing to bite. Early on water temperature is crucial to success. Find the warmest water in the area you are fishing and concentrate your effort in those areas. Sometimes the flood tide will warm up during slack water and trigger a bite as it starts to flow out. Early Stripers will hang in shallow mud sloughs for the warmer temperatures. Early June has the ocean beginning to produce Sharks, Tuna, and Marlin for the off-shore canyon fishermen. The Delaware Bay still will provide most of the inshore fishing activity. The seventy degree water temperature in the ocean will increase the spread of fluke on the inshore shoals. Check in with your local tackle stores for the latest information on fishing and new tackle. Success in fishing is in the eye of the beholder. A day on the water enjoying the season and fellowship is enough for most anglers. I have found being tuned into the peace and serenity of nature seems to elevate the pressures of today’s world. The significance of many issues seem smaller in contrast to the larger picture of life.
