“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.” ~Nelson Mandela
from the editor
Dorothy Kulisek in Walpack, NJ, 2013 Because of where we live, many of us work morning noon and night for half the year at our seasonal jobs. It is a way of life here at the shore that I have personally grown to love over the 30 years of living here since I graduated college. My way of life finds me during the cold months of January and February happily at work, mostly in my pajamas. This is the time of year when there are no pending deadlines, and the artist within me thrives writing stories and creating content. (I’ve often thought of my Creative Writing and Art teachers and how they would be proud of The Sun:-) In March and April, the business woman in me heads out to sell ads and then I head back to my computer where the graphic designer in me creates them. In between time, I am attending various events as The Sun’s staff photographer. The momentum slowly builds, and by May, this editor-in-chief is a crazy woman! Once the first issue of the season is published, on goes my delivery hat. Many of you probably see me out and about zipping all around the island with a bundle of papers in my hands. It’s actually a welcomed break from the computer. Of course there are also the late nights spent being a secretary and doing my bookkeeping. Then by June, like every other business owner in town, I’m on a treadmill running, and there’s no getting off until the end of the August. (July goes by too quickly to even mention!) Over the years of being seasonally employed, I’ve come to live for September. It’s the big reward! And this year, our September could not have been more perfect, without one rainy day straight through to October 7th. It was a bit of heaven at the beach. This is the time of year when I get in touch with my inner beach bum and I can be just a beach girl.
As you see, there are many facets to me. I’m a Gemini, but I have more than just two me’s. I grew up as a city girl who loved going to college in center city Philadelphia; and for a couple of years I was a country girl when I went away on an exchange program in the mountains that my school offered for Fine Arts majors. During this favorite month of mine, I embarked on a pilgrimage and returned there to a very special valley tucked away in the Blue Mts. called Walpack Valley, NJ. It is about 20 miles north of the Delaware Water Gap. There’s a saying, “One can fall in love at first sight with a place as well as a person.” That is what happened to me and Walpack. When I was 21, my mother dropped me off and kissed me goodbye. After getting over my homesickness, I fell in love with the landscape. The program was called Artists for Environment. Each semester, a dozen or so art students from colleges around the country dormed in an 18th century stone house. Visiting art teachers came weekly. Every day I would set out with my French easel, hiking through cornfields and meadows and brooks to find a perfect spot to paint. I feel blessed to have found the perfect spot to create right here by the sea, where late October happily finds me back to work on the Holiday issue, eagerly anticipating a deadline that arrives before the official start of the holiday season. This has always been a fun issue to work on, where I’m able to maintain a laid back pace without the craziness of the season. As I reflect on my Walpack visit, I saw a place that had remained unchanged in essence. It was as beautiful as I remembered it to be. But what I realized is how much life has changed me. As the leaves change color, the air turns cooler and the island grows quieter, I look forward to the joy of being together with my family for the Thanksgiving & Christmas season. Since our father’s passing this year, we all cherish each other and this brief life a little more deeply. I will be counting my blessings as I have much to be grateful for. I’ve been blessed with a job that I love so much. I’m so thankful for all the people who have come into my life as a result of The Sun. I’m grateful for you, my friends and readers, who have enriched my experience beyond words. I wish you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving and very merry Christmas as you too spend time rekindling joy. With profound gratitude,
Dorothy

those bygone days is Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor. Cool Scoops is more than just your typical outing for frozen treats; it’s a trip back in time to Wildwood’s glory days, where an extensive collection of 1950s memorabilia is creatively displayed. Included in their impressive compilation of treasured memories is a 1951 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe Sedan. Its proud owners, and our cover models, are Cool Scoops very own Paul & Lori Russo, who purchased the classic car on December 15, 2010. The car, which appeared in the Elvis Presley film, “Fun in Acapulco,” has been on display since the completion of a two-year restoration project. It fortuitously bears the same model number and is the same style car Elvis took his road test in. Although Elvis never traveled the sandy roads leading to Wildwood, New Jersey, his car has taken the town tour and is currently making appearances at Cool Scoops! The cover photo was actually shot at the Carideon Motel on a balmy September day by Rob Kulisek. A bit of photoshop magic was used to create the final image.
n the true holiday spirit, we are compelled to want to give. There are many organizations that vie for our generous hearts at Christmastime. A well known local Wildwood family, the Chiarella’s, would like to call upon your hearts once again to support their annual “Gift from Gia” program. The Chiarella’s have used their broken hearts over the past 14 years to bless the many children who must spend their Christmas inside Cooper Hospital. Their sadness at Christmastime is now softened every year by an unspeakable joy that only comes from a giving heart. In that spirit, their daughter Gia’s memory continues to live on. Gifts may be dropped off unwrapped at their home or at GIA, 7400 Ocean Ave. in Wildwood Crest. Call Beth, Mia or Vincent Chiarella at 609-729-5959 to make a donation

In the daytime we’d walk with our grandparents through the gigantic, to our baby eyes, aisles of Murphy’s and Newberry’s to find that gift for mom and dad. YE OLD BISHOP’S HIGH STEPS ~ The Sun’s Ongoing Series of old Wildwood Bar Stories ~ BY ANITA HIRSCH
Peggy & Louis Bishop, 2013
Louis J. Bishop, Sr.
U.S. Army 1942-1945
The Bishop family and baby Louis in his mothers arms on the high steps in 1920
The Anglesea Railroad Station was across the street from The Germantown Hotel
Irish Sean McMullen has been at the pub since 1991
Allan Wade purchased the pub from Lou Bishop in 1981
The Hindenberg Dirigible as it passed over the Angelsea Inn, circa 1937.
Taverns play a big part in the history of North Wildwood. Many fisherman of Scandinavian heritage settled in the Anglesea area and were responsible for the commercial fishing industry. “The Swedes and the Norwegians were the fishermen” says Bob Bright, who has knowledge of the Wildwoods history. “And the Ottens Harbor area in Wildwood was the boat builder’s center.” These men who were active in the fishing industry liked to have a drink or go to bars on their time off. According to Lou Bishop, who owned the Angelsea Pub for many years, it was usual for these fishermen to stop early in the morning on their way out to sea for a shot and a beer. Peggy and Lou Bishop, relate the history of the Bishop family in Anglesea. In the city directory of 1912, one of the taverns listed was Bishop’s Café which was owned by a Louis Bishop, an uncle to Lou Bishop, his father’s brother who was called Looty. This uncle was the first member of the Bishop family to come to North Wildwood and to own a café. Bishop’s Café was at 213 Walnut Ave. and Olde New Jersey Avenue. Later it became Wally’s and now it is an empty lot. Another tavern at that time, was the Walnut Avenue House which was directly across the street from Bishop’s Café, at 100 W. Walnut Avenue. It was later owned by William Bishop, Jr. the brother of Lou Bishop. Bill Bishop married Mary Moore, whose father owned Moore’s Inlet, a popular night spot. The old Walnut Avenue House was also a rooming house and later became Joe Ellis’ Restaurant in the 1960’s and in the 70’s it became Mickey O’Rourkes and then Di’Continental and then Talk of the Town. Now that space is occupied by Echo’s.
The Angelsea Pub was built in 1890 and was originally owned by George Ent who named it the Germantown Hotel. Lou Bishop still has the old Germantown Hotel register that includes the names of the guests, where they lived and the dates. The early records indicate that rooms were available for $2 a day and advertisements boasted of “fine wines, beers and liquors, cigars and shuffleboard”. In 1917, William Bishop, Sr. purchased the Germantown, and it became known as Bishop’s. William then moved his family to North Wildwood from Camden where he had a bar and sold food. They came to North Wildwood because his brother Looty was here. The family lived upstairs at Bishop’s. In the Five Mile Beach Weekly Journal (cost 2 cents) on February 20, 1920, there was a news item published under the Anglesea News: “Early Saturday morning, February 14, a baby boy was born in the home of William Bishop. The baby’s name is Louis.” The old photo of Bishop’s that shows wrap around steps hangs in the Angelsea Pub showing his family outside and Lou is held by his mother. Just three years after the purchase of the Germantown Hotel, Prohibition was enacted and Bishop’s could only legally sell Near Beer. Lou Bishop remembers as a child hearing talk of rumrunners bringing alcohol in around midnight in five gallon tubs or metal cans by boat or truck and stored in the neighbors cellar. Then to sell it, they would mix the colorless liquid with a caramel color. People would come in with a bottle or jar, even a mason jar and purchase the liquid and take it home. Lou remembered Moore’s Inlet was fined for selling whiskey during those prohibition times. Bishop’s, known as Hi-Steps had only six owners during its illustrious history: George Ent, the Bishop family, Allan Wade who changed the name to the S. A. Wade’s Tavern, Ralph Rittenhouse purchased it in 1991 and changed the name to the Angelsea Pub. Then Chuck Burns bought it, he now owns the Ice House, and in 2005, he sold the Angelsea to Velma and Tony Suppa, who had owned the Thunderbird Inn. Tony hired Irish Sean McMullen as the general manager in 2012, although his career began at the Pub in 1991. The Bishop family owned it the longest, for 63 years, from 1918 until 1981. William and his wife Catherine, raised their four Continues on next page

~ Continued The Sun’s Ongoing Series of old Wildwood Bar Stories ~ from previous page children there: Louis, William, Richard and a sister Margaret. In 1957, his son’s Lou and Dick took over the tavern. In 1971, after his brother Dick died, Lou kept it for 10 more years and sold it in 1981. Visitors from Philadelphia would come across the Delaware River by taking the Camden Ferry. On Sundays, there were 15 trains a day from Camden to Wildwood. The visitors would take these Sunday excursions in the summer. They would leave from Camden from 5:30AM to 11:30AM. They would enjoy the beach and boardwalk, take the open air trolleys and visit the bars and Hi-Steps, which was located across from the railroad station. These were day trips; then they would return that same day to Camden and Philadelphia. Lou’s parents rented rooms and sold food in those early days. They didn’t serve cocktails, but they served beer, high balls and maybe a “mixed drink” such as combining whiskey with orange juice. “There were no cocktails served like a Margarita” chuckled Lou and Peggy. Only men were allowed at the bar. There was a Ladies Entrance. The women dressed up to go to the taverns. The men could come in and sit with the ladies or their wives who sat at tables in the side room.
During World War II, Lou was in the army in Europe. He was stationed at Fort Dix first and then sent to Fort Lewis, in the state of Washington. He served for four years, was a cook in the infantry in the 44th division, and was discharged on Nov 2, 1945. He worked at the bar when he came home in 1945 and worked there until 1981. Lou met his wife Peggy because her parents were friends of Lou’s brother Bill, the owner of The Walnut Avenue House. Lou and Peggy have two sons: Timothy who is married to Kim and they live in North Wildwood and Louis Jr. who lives in Cape May Court House and works for the state of New Jersey. Lou and Peggy have two grandchildren: Lauren who is an assistant manager at Congress Hall in Cape May, and Ryan who lives in Fort Myers, Florida. The grandchildren worked at the Anglesea Pub at the time that Tony Suppa owned it. They served as bar tenders, waiters, or hosts. Lauren, believes there are ghosts in the Angelsea Pub. While she was working there, something fell off a shelf and she thought a ghost did it. There were and are people who believe that there are ghosts in the building.
Thank you to the Wildwood Historical Society, Peggy and Lou Bishop, Sean McMullen and Bob Bright.

The dining room Before The Feature House for this year’s 25th Anniversary Tour is the Capt. Charles J. and Lydia Crawford, Jr. House – 1852 The 25th Anniversary Historic Dennisville Christmas House Tour will take place on Saturday, December 21, 2013. This special House Tour will have extended hours from 4PM to 9PM. House Tour tickets are $10.00 and will be on sale at the Dennisville Post Office, 24 Hall Avenue in Dennisville, the afternoon and evening of the tour only, beginning at 3:30 PM. No advance tickets are available. Student and member greeters will distribute programs and welcome tour visitors. The feature house for this year’s 25th Anniversary Tour is the Capt. Charles J. and Lydia Crawford, Jr. House – 1852. This year marks not only the 25th anniversary of the Dennisville Tour but also the 25th anniversary of the current owners in the feature house. This house has not been on the Dennisville Tour since 2002. Be sure to come see some of the interesting changes. Charles Crawford, Jr. was a Delaware Bay ship captain. When Capt. Crawford died in 1878, he left a considerable estate to his wife, Lydia. In 1881 Lydia pursued the parlor addition to the house. This included a bedroom on the second floor. The current owners purchased the house in 1988. There were only 2 remaining windows on the structure and some of the doors. The first major challenge was to secure the house from the elements and from looters. There was no interior plumbing— only a hand pump outside and a two seat outhouse. In 1990 the interior plumbing was completed and the dilapidated porch rear porch was rebuilt. 1995 saw the completion of a family room and bedroom suite addition. This year’s tour has extended hours so as to include 2 bonus houses that are a short distance outside the village and included in the Dennisville for the first time. One is the Matalucci House - 1990 with its beautiful Christmas collections of vintage ornaments, toys and vintage bottle brush trees. The

other house is the Randal Marshall House – 1840 in the Marshallville section of the County. This house sits on the Tuckahoe River and is filled with marvelous antiques. The Dennis Volunteer Fire Company will be open with new and numerous antique pieces of fire equipment on display. Refreshments will be available there and at the Dennisville UMC Social Hall on Main Street. The Middletones (Middle Township High School’s a cappella vocal quartet) carolers will stroll through the village in period costume and sing carols in the various houses on the tour. A delicious Soup and Sandwich Supper will be available at the South Dennis Trinity UMC Church in South Dennis beginning at 3PM and will continue until food runs out. The cost for the supper is $8.00 for adults and $3.50 for children under 12.

Wildwood
by
Cindy Wheaton Phillips
There’s a special little town down by the sea, With beaches and boardwalks, Where my heart longs to be. It’s full of people I know and love, Who are all so dear to me; They tell me stories of days gone by and people I’ve never met. Their voices and laughter ring in my ears, I still hear them yet. When waves come crashing or I smell the ocean breeze, I will close my eyes and dream, I’m there with my loved ones in the special little town down by the sea.
Joseph C. Wheaton, Jr. in 1936 Cindy’s father in Wildwood by-the-sea
Joseph C, Wheaton, Sr. and Dora Wheaton circa 1920’s Cindy’s grandparents in Wildwood by-the-sea
“Back home” were words I heard
often while growing up. My parents told stories from their childhood. Even though they had moved away to Southern California, they always referred to New Jersey as home. My father, Joseph C. Wheaton, Jr. grew up in Wildwood and graduated from Wildwood High School in 1951. My mother, Evelyn Wheaton, grew up in Collingswood, but spent many summers in Wildwood vacationing and later working as a waitress at the Hotel Seville. I never tired of hearing their stories of carefree summer days spent at the beach and fun-filled nights on the boardwalk. When we were very little, my parents took my older sisters and I on our first airplane trip to visit our grandparents and other family members in New Jersey. It was so much fun to enjoy the same Wildwood beaches and boardwalk that our parents had when they were children. The sights, sounds and memories made a lasting impression on me. I’ve visited several times since then, including twice with my husband and two sons. I was glad that they too, could experience the same special summer activities that their grandparents had. My parents have visited almost every summer, but last summer my mother decided to forego the trip, and I accompanied my father instead. It was a very special father-daughter time that I would not have wanted to miss for the world. We spent our days driving around Wildwood with my dad pointing out various landmarks and sharing anecdotes associated with buildings and sights. As was his custom on every trip, he made mention of where he had lived and the church and high school he attended. We spent our days at the beach as well, and he talked about his time as a lifeguard. No trip would have been complete without enjoying the wonderful seafood Wildwood offers. We feasted on deviled Crabs, clams casino, flounder, and other delicacies. A highlight of any trip to Wildwood is the time spent visiting family members that we rarely get to see. Since my father was the only one of his siblings to move away from Wildwood, it has always been a joyous occasion for him to return home. We even made it a point to visit North Wildwood City Hall to see pictures displayed of my great-grandfather, Harry C. Wheaton, who was a former Mayor and New Jersey State Senator. Family is certainly the main focus of any trip to Wildwood. Although it was never my home, Wildwood holds a special place in my heart because it was and is home to people who are very precious to me. ~Cindy Wheaton Phillips Thank you Cindy, for sharing your Wildwood memories and photos with The Sun! {This is taken from The Sun’s treasured archives.}

Marvin Hume teaching Carla and Chris how to fold the flag
We park our car along Sunset Boulevard and start walking toward the beach. It is a splendid late August afternoon, the kind that you wished they all should be – sunny, low humidity, with a touch of the approaching autumn season in the air. When we get out I spot the flag down by the beach, unfurling and then dropping along the pole in the gentle breeze. “It looks like Louie caught the perfect day today,” I remark to my wife Carla, who does not answer. She is still watching the flag. Our family members are gathered on the beach amongst a crowd of people – children flying kites, sunbathers, and kayakers skimming across the water by the jagged remains of the concrete ship. We take some pictures at the base of the flag pole as we wait for the flag lowering ceremony to begin. Ninety-one year old Marvin Hume, a United States Navy veteran of World War Two (USS Megara), has flown the casket flag of military servicemen over the beach at Cape May Point every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day since 1973 and he has been booked solid ever since. We had to wait for over a year to secure a day close to my late father-in-law’s August birthday. When we did we were instructed to take the flag out of its case and bring it, along with a brief passage about him, down to Mr. Hume’s charmingly rustic gift shop on the day before. We stayed to witness that day’s ceremony for an Army veteran from World War Two and cried along with his daughter while his flag was being lowered. I remember thinking; my wife could not have found a more fitting tribute for a man who truly deserved one: Mr.Louis Delollis was born in Bedford, Ohio on August 25, 1920. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy and served onboard the Destroyer USS Frankford as a Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class for the duration of World War Two. The Frankford participated in many campaigns, including the invasions of Normandy and southern France in 1944, and served as part
of the screen protection for President Roosevelt when he travelled to Malta in 1945. The Frankford also saw action in the Pacific campaign. On his way on a train to New York after the war, he met his future wife, Lucille Trotta. They were married on July 10, 1946 and made their home in the Bronx. In the early 1950’s they moved to Cape May County where they raised their family while he worked as a mechanic for U.S. Overseas Airlines, which operated from the Cape May County Airport. He later worked as a shipping supervisor for Airwork in Millville, New Jersey until his retirement. Louis and Lucille Delollis were married for 64 years and were blessed with three children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson. Mr. Delollis passed away on July 4, 2010. At last Mr. Hume’s voice crackles over the loudspeaker, announcing that the ceremony is about to begin. He instructs people to remove their hats and face the flag and for those still in their vehicles to “please step out.” He also asks all veterans to salute the flag. There are a few scattered around the beach and my son, a retired Army Captain, is one of them. A recording of ‘God Bless America’ sung by Kate Smith, which is as weather- beaten as the buildings along the beach, drifts above the crowd. Everyone stands quietly, right hands placed over their hearts, listening to the song and watching the flag. The passage about Lou Delollis is read by Mr. Hume’s daughter while he comes out to the beach. Then ‘Taps’ is played over the loudspeaker while Mr. Hume starts to lower the flag. We begin to well up and some are letting it spill out and it is over much too quickly. Under the watchful eye of Mr. Hume, my wife and son proceed to fold the flag in proper military fashion. A hearty round of applause erupts throughout the area: the beach, the parking lot, the snack stand, and the gift shop. It is for Lou Delollis in honor of his sacrifice for our country, and for Marvin Hume for his simple, yet noble way of saying thank you.

The Baker Family in the front parlor of the Hereford Lighthouse- 1946 Young Jack and sister, Winnie on floor with their dog “Bunny”
George Baker was Coast Guard Keeper
of the Hereford Lighthouse from approximately 1938-39 –1955. He and his wife Alice raised their four children in the beautiful Victorian building that served as half lighthouse and half home. The first two floors were the family’s living quarters. The three story tower was the actual “lighthouse”. George would have to make sure the Fresnel Lens at the top was lit by 6pm every night. He would make the climb to the top and crank up the weights that would then slowly descend to make the grandfather clock-like mechanism rotate the light. George would have to wind this up again before bedtime at 10pm and wake up at 2am for the last cranking. He would arise at 6am and turn off the light by 7am. Although he lived with his family in the Lighthouse, he would still have to do duty next door at the Coast Guard Station. He worked 9 days straight with 2 days off. George did everything from patrol boat duty to cooking, besides his job as lighthouse keeper. George and his family did not stay at the Lighthouse for free just because he tended the light. 90¢ per day was deducted from his pay for rent. The front door always had to remain unlocked for inspections. These
facts reminded the Bakers they were in a building owned by the U.S. Government. At the end of the day when the family gathered together, however, they were “home” and lived and interacted with each other just like every other family, even during the Christmas Holidays. George and Alice had 3 daughters, Georgia, Betty and Winnie and 1 son, Jack. Jack still lives and works locally and related some of his Christmas memories to me. Jack’s first Christmas at the Lighthouse was in 1938 when he was 3 years old. One of his earliest memories is that a few days before Christmas every year, the North Wildwood Fire Department would escort Santa down the street distributing stockings filled with fruits and nuts. I think he is very happy this tradition still continues after all these years. He remembers his dad taking him in a Coast Guard truck along with some other Coasties to Indian Trail Road (Rt. 147) to cut down cedar trees. They would take just enough for the married men, one tree for the Coast Guard Station and one for the Lighthouse. Jack said their Christmas tree was always set up in the first floor parlor where we now have our Fresnel Lens on display. The tree would be set up and decorated after dinner on Christmas
Eve. The children would all take part in decorating it with the oldest girl, Georgia, constantly reminding the others to put the tinsel on neatly. After the decorating was done, Jack said they would all have an ice cream treat and sent off to bed at their regular time. Parents George and Alice would then have their adult friends over to celebrate Christmas Eve. The kids would wake up early like all children do on Christmas morning, about 5am! They would all race downstairs to find out what surprises Santa left them. After their presents were opened, older sister Georgia would tease the others that she knew where their presents had been hidden all along. Some of the bigger ones were in the Coast Guard Station. There was sharing and comradarie amongst the Coast Guard and the married men at the station would pass down toys from their children to other younger ones and when these toys were outgrown they would be passed down again. One of Jack’s favorite gifts was a 28” bicycle with new “skinny” wheels. This was a little bit too much bike for a 6 year old. In order to ride this he had to reach up over his head to the handlebars and put a foot through the frame to get to the other pedal and ride the bike in a stand up position. When Jack was about 12, he and his sister Winnie received new Schwinn Bikes with a light on the front fender and mud flaps. What a surprise this was! Another gift he fondly remembers was a BB gun (he never shot his eye out.) Jack had been fascinated with the large 1000 watt bulb in the Fresnel Lens and started collecting all sorts of light bulbs. He discovered one day how much fun it would be to toss them into the inlet and target practice with his Red Ryder Rifle. The Baker family always had a big traditional Christmas dinner. Some of George’s Coast Guard buddies would be invited if they had nowhere else to go. The dinner would feature turkey, mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables and pies. Jack’s last Christmas at the Lighthouse was in 1954. He was in the Air Force by this time and came back to North Wildwood on leave. His father George left his position as Hereford’s Lighthouse Keeper the following year. If you want to celebrate Christmas at the Hereford Lighthouse, you can do so on Friday December 6th. The annual Tree Lighting ceremony will be held 5:30PM. • Open House • Community Gathering in the Hereford Lighthouse Courtyard • Hot Chocolate & Cookies • A Visit from Santa & Mrs. Claus • Holiday Music by Margaret Mace Children’s Choir • Maritime Folk Singer, Peter Harp Sings Sea Shanties

Notes from the
Wildwood Historical Society 3907 Pacific Ave. in Wildwood. 609-523-0277
Once again, it’s time to announce that the Wildwood Historical Society will be closing for the winter months, beginning in November and re-opening in April. If you are in need of any of our services, call us at 609-523-0277, and leave a message. We will get back to you as soon as possible. If you are on a research project, we can set up a mutually acceptable time. We have found the closing necessary because of the cost of keeping the museum running for so few winter visitors. This seemed to work out for us last year and, remember, we will be there for you. As the summer/fall season draws to a close, I look back sadly at the crowds that are no longer here, the summer visitors walking by my house with chairs, coolers and children in tow as they make their way to the beach, the prolific choices of restaurants to sample and of course, warmer climes. I miss the sounds emanating from the boardwalk when the wind is just right, and on the night of a full moon, I like taking a ride on Kennedy Boulevard just to see the moonlight splaying across the ocean in picture postcard fashion. Even though all those good things that summer brings us are no longer, I look forward to another season. I look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas and the time that allows families to get together and appreciate each other. When I was a child, our Christmas tree never went up until Christmas Eve day. By the time I married and had children, it went up a week ahead of Christmas to allow me more time for shopping, wrapping, etc. And now that I’m in my “dotage”, the tree goes up a month ahead of time. I enjoy just sitting in front of it and enjoying the lights, the decorations, and the angel, atop the tree, with the squeaky moving wings. I refer to her as my “arthritic Christmas Angel”. This entire picture just makes me feel good! As the months pass, and there is a change of seasons, there are also changes in the seasons of our lives. One change that I anticipate will be my resignation from the Wildwood Historical Society by the end of my term as president in January.
I have been on the Board of Directors for nine years, seven of which I have served as president. I feel it is time to give someone else a chance. I have great memories of the years I have put in at the museum; the people I have met and the stories people have shared with me. Nothing can take that away or replace it. A lot of years ago, when I was fresh out of high school, I took a job that was just providing a paycheck. I confided this to a senior co-worker and he commented that I did a very good job in spite of my feelings. Looking back, my reply surprises me from someone so young. I told him “anything worth my time is worth my best effort.” I have always held true to this adage and I feel I have made a difference. It has been wonderful working with Dorothy of this paper and the many people who have passed through our doors, but for now, it’s time to move on . . . . . . Be happy and be well.
Anne Vinci,
President of Wildwood Historical Society, inc.
Charles Cannon of Ventnor, NJ, donated this metal voting box to the museum in September, 2013. By the ink stamp on the front of it, it was used in Wildwood in the 3rd Ward, 2nd District. According to Michael Kennedy, Registrar at the Cape May County Board of Elections, on November 8, 1960, a public question on a paper ballot gave the voters the choice to use voting machines in all elections. This was the last time this metal voting box was used.

2013 WINTER MOVIE GUIDE
by Meg Corcoran
D
uring their Last Vegas trip, our holiday cast of characters agreed no desert land could ever replace their island retreat, where the off season may be chilly but the hearts are never Frozen. Jack Ryan has taken up temporary residence, looking for a little peace and quiet from the outside international world. Another world traveler (in his mind) living The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has happily discovered warm moments here along with family-friendly adventures unfound in his clock-and-dagger imagination. The Hobbit: (forgoes) The Desolation of Smaug for happy days breathing in fresh, salty air. Certain that Santa Claus will find them beneath the Wildwood stars, the Hollywood wanderers are in no hurry to leave town, where they’ve found an ocean view provides as much entertainment as the big screen (even when they’re on it). Before following the scenic view leading to the biggest screen near you, please check your local listings for release date changes… On their Last Vegas (opens November 1st) excursion, three old pals (Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline) skip the miniature golf circuit to attend a bachelor party for their commitment phobic friend (Michael Douglas) with calamity sure to ensue. A Hereford Inlet Christmas Tree Lighting would surely add light for Thor: (whose) Dark World (Chris Hemsworth, opens November 8th) is threatened by an Asgardian warrior (Christopher Eccleston) with Thor’s much-loved earthling Jane (Natalie Portman) in harm’s way. High times far from crime-free Downtown Pacific Avenue were had by stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) during his days as The Wolf of Wall Street (opens November 15th) prior to his 22-month jail stint for the millions he made through securities fraud. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (opens November 22nd) catches Katniss and Peeta (Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson) enduring endless, less entertaining “Battle of the Boards” moments as Capitol targets when their win in the 74th Hunger Games sets off an uprising in the Districts of Panem. It’s a Frozen (opens November 27th) eternal winter lacking a frost-free ocean after a magical snow-controlling queen (voice
of Idina Menzel) unintentionally curses the kingdom of Arendelle. Her optimistic sister (voice of Kristen Bell) sets out on a snowy journey to remove the curse. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (opens December 13th) follows our unenthusiastic hobbit hero (Martin Freeman) and the 13 dwarves on a dangerous journey through sand and surf (and then some) to reclaim a stockpile of gold the condescending dragon is guarding. Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) is in charge of Saving Mr. Banks (opens December 25th) from sunless days and shore-less nights while sparring with novelist P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) during the troubleplague movie production of Mary Poppins. A Family Holiday Celebration would provide a much-needed distraction for a jilted, cancer-stricken woman (Meryl Streep) who must contend with her bitter daughters’ (Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis) arrival in August: Osage County (opens December 25th). The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller, opens December 25th) lacks an active boardwalk existence and becomes anything but secretive when the shy, imaginative photo editor must take a real adventurous trip to find a missing shot by a famous photographer (Sean Penn) alongside his beautiful co-worker (Kristen Wiig). CIA Jack Ryan (Chris Pine, opens December 25th) has just begun his illustrious career of international financial intrigue but still finds time for romantic beach walks with a new love interest (Keira Knightley). With the sun setting and the stars adorning a magical, made-for-the-big-screen night, Thor: (realizes a) Dark World is nowhere to be found beneath our lighthearted skies. Even The Wolf of Wall Street has tamed his greedy ways, traveling along Ocean Avenue and beyond, devouring every picture-postcard moment. The heroic team Saving Mr. Banks from lame entertainment and poor renditions of the classics races from one classically entertaining block to the next. Slowing their pace, they realize it may not be August: (in) Osage County, but no matter the season, the best place to be, during a sundrenched beach day or a frosty, holiday-inspired movie night, is Wildwood by the sea….

TWENTY PLUS SIX ANGELS
Deb Moore Local Author and Lyricist Radio Host Lift Fm 98.5 “Music and Message with Deb” DebMoore7@comcast.net Jeff Held Music Artist, Worship Leader JeffreyHeld@hotmail.com
Deb Moore, Author and Lyricist from Cape May County, NJ presented a Special Easter Message that featured a memorial song she wrote the lyrics for honoring victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings at a presentation she delivered on Sunday, March 10th, 2013 at the Court House Convalescent Center in Cape May Court House. The song was co-produced with Music Artist, Jeff Held, of Berks County, PA who did the arrangement and vocals. The song called, Twenty Plus Six Angels, Forget-Me-Not, is a tribute honoring the twenty innocent children and the six special courageous teachers that were victims of the shootings at Sandy Hook, Connecticut a year ago on December 14th. The song was released on Valentine’s Day, February 14th and aired on several radio stations in PA and NJ including Lift FM in Bridgeton, NJ. Moore said, “For those that celebrate the message of the cross at Easter, what better message of God’s love than the message of the significance of each life He sent His son to die for; and out of each tragic situation comes pupose if we allow each situation to take a positive new direction. Things happen in our lives that don’t make sense at all. An unthinkable terrible tragedy happened December 14th at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Jeff and I were inspired to co-produce this song as a way to share God’s love and compassion: a commitment to those who are suffering that as individuals and as a nation we will not forget the lives of the victims of this shooting. We hope the song reminds all people that each life is unique and precious to God, regardless of age, location, race, culture, status or ability. Hug those you love more and embrace the significance of life, because in the end it is love that endures. Our prayers go out to the families, children, teachers and all affected by this tragic situation in the town of Newtown, CT.”
Twenty plus Six Angels… Laughed with us a little while. The world’s a better place… Because you were a part of it. Each day you’re remembered Deep within our hearts. The birds all hushed… On that December morn. Morning was something… That just, just didn’t greet. Cold in Sandy Hook… A nation fell, Fell down to her knees. Joy To the World… Melted within peace on earth. Silent Night… The moon glowed in a sea of tears. Well how could we fathom Christmas plans this year. Twenty plus Six Angels… Lived with us a little while. The world’s a better place because you were a part of it. Each day you’re remembered Deep within our hearts. Twenty plus Six Angels… Laughed with us a little while. We’ll meet again some day in paradise. Until then we won’t forget your smiles. Twenty Plus Six Angels Forget-Me-Not © 2013 Jeffrey Held and Deborah Moore All rights reserved. Unauthorized duplication Prohibited. Song composed and sung by Jeff Held. Lyrics by Deb Moore
Moore and Held had been in contact with those close to this tragedy and directed proceeds from the sale of the single to the town of Newtown, CT for crisis counseling. To listen or download the song go to iTunes and search Twenty Plus Six Angels or go to www.cdbaby.com/jeffheld12 . For more information or to purchase a CD of the single contact Deb Moore at email: debmooreministries@comcast.net. Moore is an Author, Lyricist, former business owner and non-demoninational Christian minister. She frequently does speaking engagements performing live music and inspirational messages for veterans, seniors, government and military groups, businesses, hospitals, churches and special requests.

The Royal Order of the Clothespin A HOLIDAY TRADITION by Marilyn Guidetti
Guidetti & Sittineri cousins in North Wildwood at their summer 2013 Reunion
Many years ago my parents, brothers and
sister with their families decided to move from North Jersey down to the Jersey Shore full time. My husband and I were not ready to leave, he loved his job, the children were in school, we owned our first home and had many of our childhood friends nearby. Back then, outside of a few cities, the towns along the shore were not heavily populated during the off-season. There were small downtown areas with a few shops, but major shopping was done through catalogs or a trip to one of the larger cities. When holiday season rolled around my one brother found he could not shop for the things he wanted for his children. So after some discussion with the others, it was decided that they would all come up to my house for Thanksgiving weekend. One reason was to enjoy the holiday dinner together with my family and second to take advantage of the big sales going on in the shopping centers the days after Thanksgiving. Then it became a tradition, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving all the South Jersey part of our family would get in their cars, and drive up the parkway to my house. They would get there in time for supper Wednesday night, then my Mom would start prepping the huge turkey for the next day. Sleeping arrangements would be made, no one cared where they slept as long as we were all together for the next four days. There were fourteen young nieces and nephews and sometimes a few more from extended families, running around and of course being kids they sometimes got into mischief. There were some big crisis and some small ones. To me a middle sized crisis was when all the clothespins from my clothesline disappeared. We never would find out what happened to them, that was their secret, and they did it every year. Time marched on and between school, sports, jobs and other obligations it was harder to get everyone together for a long
weekend. The shore towns were building up and getting some big stores, good for shopping but bad for traffic. (The trip up the Parkway on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving was getting impossible). Unfortunately the fun holiday weekend came to a stop. But as the family grew we started having graduations, weddings, landmark birthday parties, religious functions and celebrations. Then the cousins started to bring clothespins to the affairs and pin them on unsuspecting friends and family. A “victim” could walk around all night with a clothespin hanging on his jacket or her skirt. We started calling ourselves the clothespin family and explain to guests that it was all in fun and it was an honor to be “pinned”. As I mentioned before things change and we often said “we will get together soon” but there was always something to prevent it. This year I decided we were going to do it. I sent out a “hold the date” in the Spring and in July we finally had our holiday dinner together. We were in South Jersey not North and there was sand instead of snow and ham and potato salad instead of turkey and yams, but everyone enjoyed being together. There are now 26 grand nieces and nephews and still counting. Of course the highlight of the day were the clothespins and the new generation getting into the act. My Son put up a big sign declaring us “The Royal Order of the Clothespin”. We shared our memories and laughed when the cousins told us stories about the mischievous things they did on those holiday weekends and the adults never knew. The night went fast and we finally had to say our goodbyes and we did promise to do it again soon. The Royal Order is not forgotten because as I walk around the house and yard putting things away for the close of the season I keep coming across hidden clothespins attached to the most unlikely things.
Happy Holidays! From our Home to Yours. . .

Families Working Out Together
Beth & Mia Chiarella sharing the love of health & happiness Hey Everyone! Sorry I’ve been M.I.A…..Literally lol! I’m back and here to inform you all that, yes….. the holidays are quickly approaching, and so are those frustrating pounds and inches! AHHHH..here we go again. The constant battle of zipping and unzipping your jeans to get them to properly hold it all together! It’s a common dreaded cycle to lose and gain weight from summer to winter, but don’t fear, I am here to help. I’m your “go to girl” for fitness and food! Fitness guru by day and cheferella by night! I’m going to help you melt away those holiday pounds one by one. First and foremost, we all have to not step on the scale. Throw that thing out. Hey it’s Bethie! Mia’s mom. I have lived with the Fitness Queen forever, and like so many of you, have read her posts. I AM AT THE GYM AND I AM PUMPED AND I TAKE NO PRISONERS…and in my head, it read blah blah blah. On a recent bet, I went to the 10th St. Gym, and to be honest, I thought I was walking into a torture chamber, people grunting and groaning, straps and chains hanging, and strange pieces of apparatus! My first day was torture…I was clueless but followed Ron Oswald’s instruction so I felt a bit more comfortable with the equipment. The next day I walked in like I owned the place and did my own little workout. It was really starting to feel good, so I finally ventured my way upstairs to the big girl workout room
It’s not about the number, it’s about the grand picture… the final product! Weight is just a number and sadly I think many of us fixate on it way too much then we should; trust me I used to be that way. If you are constantly getting on that little object and beating yourself up then STOP! STOP NOW! SO this is what we do; we all our going to gear up in our gym clothes and lace up those fresh new sneaks that have been collecting dust! Throw out everything that screams “I AM PROCESSED AND LOADED WITH ADDED SUGARS AND CHOLESTEROL!” Food shouldn’t be your enemy, it should be enjoyable. Not everything has to be bland, but I do highly recommend clean eating as much as possible. Eating 6 small meals a day every 2 ½ - 3 hours isn’t so bad! Make it fun, and make it a habit to fuel your body with all the good nutrients it needs. Splurge at a holiday party, but not on everything. Save your calories for what you enjoy most. Remember, results don’t happen overnight. Don’t get discouraged or beat yourself up over a few pounds. We are all human and life is about enjoying every minute of it especially at this special time of year. It takes a lot of drive and determination to achieve your goals whether it’s short term or long term. I know that each and every one of you have it in you. Slow and steady always win the race and we are in our own race TOGETHER! Fitness is only half the battle; the rest is up to what you do outside. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! LOVE MIA

with Mia. She easily moved me through the apparatus and while she was on the elliptical for an hour, I managed to glide through my workout. I am proud to say that the “torture chamber” has now become my nirvana. I’ve been spending 45 minutes to an hour every day going through the routine that Mia and Ron set up for me. I honestly am tiny, (I only weighed 120 pounds when I delivered Mia,) and I am still small. However, I am now in my 50s so it’s time to keep it going! This is coming from the girl that lives on Tastykake Juniors and Reese’s Cups, (plus a pack of cigarettes a day)…I feel fabulous! I smoke less! I eat cleaner! and, I look fantastic! If I can do it, anyone can! I did it on a bet, and I bet you can too!!! LOVE, BETHIE

Here we have the Reeds, standing on the patio of the long-gone Hotel Royal at the Boardwalk & Magnolia Avenue (directly across the street from Groff’s Restaurant). This perspective offers a truly unique view of the Boardwalk and beach, as well as Hunt’s Pier - in its infancy! According to Chris: “My great grandfather retired in November 1960 from the Pennsylvania RR after 48 years as a locomotive engineer. 1961 would have been the first summer of his retirement. No wonder he looks so happy!
“He would have been 70 years old at the time this picture was taken.” Note the ocean coming up under the pier and the Golden Nugget Mine Ride, which was in its second season of operation at the time. Hunt’s Pier would be extended shortly after, to accommodate for the 1962 addition of the Pirate Ship Skua. WILDWOOD BY-THE-SEA, NJ HOLIDAY 2013
the SUN by-the-Sea
“Behold the miracle of the earth with all the wonder of a child.” ~Edna Jacques Christmas was the highlight of the year for my family. It was celebrated from about Dec. 6th to Jan. 1st, although the decorations (tons of them) didn’t come down until the Epiphany on Jan 6th. I feel blessed to have had a family (and an extended family) that was an extremely nice, generous, fun loving bunch of people. They also knew how to celebrate properly. At Christmas, and every holiday, there was always lots of gifts, story sharing, music, food (and even more to drink) singing, games and laughter. Everyone would take turns hosting their own parties, so there was lots of traveling during the month of December. Most of my 59 Christmases are all blurred together, except for the ones that I have photographs, or old Christmas cards with notes or gift wish lists to jog my memory a bit. Memories of one of these holidays recently resurfaced after looking through a box of saved family “relics” my mother left me. It was the Holiday season of 1961, when we spent Christmas Eve and Day at my grandparents’ home in North Wildwood. It is amazing how memories of over a half century ago can come back so clearly. Those of times with family and loved ones are priceless to us now, but as kids, it was all about the presents. Remember how impossible it was to try to fall asleep on Christmas Eve? It’s funny when you think about it now though, that the gifts you begged for and dreamed about this year were almost completely forgotten about the following year. Anyway, after discovering these things my mother saved for so long, I was reminded of a Christmas and presents from 52 years ago. Baseball was still America’s sport in 1961, but I remember the “biggie” gift for me that year was a football uniform complete with helmet and pads. Of course there was also a brand new Wilson football and kicking tee as well. I begged all the men in the family (and some of the women) to come outside and throw me passes. The ball was finally confiscated after this was done in the house a few times. I still wore the uniform until bedtime though. Back then, probably half of the prime time TV shows were westerns, so you know there were always cowboy toys. A “Johnny Reb” cannon was one of them. This large toy gun by Remco actually fired plastic cannon balls. It came complete with a ram rod and confederate flag. After I got tired of bombing toy soldiers in the back yard, I brought it inside my grandparents house to look for some potential targets. The cannon was quickly put alongside the football, back under the Christmas tree. Another present that year was a “View Master”. This little plastic device looked like a cross between a camera and binoculars. It came with round cardboard slides that had 7 tiny photos. You inserted

Young Steve Murray in the football uniform with his blue Robot Commander. (L-R) Grandpop Charlie, Grandmom Anna, Uncle Ron & Cousin Irma
these into the viewer and when you looked toward a good source of light, you would be treated to amazingly beautiful color 3D images. This was the closest thing we had to I Max back then. Most of the slides were of National Parks and travel pictures from around the world. My favorite though, was one of TV’s Wyatt Earp pointing his long colt 45 right at you. The extra long barrel in 3D seemed to project out of the viewer, and aimed right between my eyes. It would be decades before there were any real hi tech toys but that year, I received one that was on the cutting edge. This was the “Robot Commander” made by the Ideal Toy Company. The 20” blue and red plastic robot actually moved about and fired missiles by means of voice command and a hand held controller.
My grandfather was kind of old fashioned and not familiar with the latest trends of the time (like I am today). I thought a surprise demonstration of the latest space age toy would impress him a lot. Pop was a heavy set, slow moving man, a little reminiscent of Archie Bunker (but without the bigot mouth). He actually had a heart of gold but he could have a very short, hot temper, especially with me, for obvious reasons. Like Archie, he had his own chair nobody would dare sit in and he was never without an El Producto stogie which was sometimes lit, sometimes not. Late that Christmas morning, before lunch, I found him by himself in the living room. He was fast asleep in his chair and his still smoking cigar was propped up in an ashtray next to him. I quietly snuck in and placed the robot on the floor on the other side of the room. I climbed under a nearby table and hidden under the tablecloth, I could operate the robot. I had a good view of my grandfathers reflection in a full wall mirror that hung on the wall across from him. He was a sound sleeper so even when I gave the first voice command to move the robot forward, only one of his eyes partially opened. I gave another command and the robot moved to about 4’ in front of him. Both eyes were now somewhat opened and I gave the next command to fire. Its right arm sprung up and unleashed a missile under handed, that just missed my grandfather. He was awake now and was staring in disbelief at this blue thing in front of him with the weird rotating eyeballs. Another command and the robots left arm released a second missile that went over his shoulder. This really startled Pop into full awakeness. He sat up straight in his chair, picked up his cigar and took a long drag, still staring down in disbelief . I waited just a bit. I only had one more missile. I gave the last command and this time the top of the robots head popped open and launched a missile that hit my grandfather right in the chest. He jumped up from his chair quicker than I ever saw him move while blurting out some very unChristmas like words. When he rose, he dropped his lit cigar down the front of his shirt scattering hot embers everywhere. He quietly said a few more of those words again while he brushed himself off and picked up his cigar. He never seemed to have heard my voice commands and still didn’t know I was in the same room. I think it was because he just came out of a sound sleep and he was completely transfixed by the strange robot. I stayed hidden under the table while Pop left the room calling for my grandmother. I’m still surprised I lived to see another Christmas.

5 MILES of Smiles!
dear
If God had a wallet your picture would be in it!
Singer Yelawolf once said, “You’re richer than you think, in that old small town. Cause people like you make the world go round.” We here at the Sun like to acknowledge local, hardworking souls that make smalltown living a little sweeter. We proudly recognize Ernest Sutton, Wildwood High School graduate, class of 2003, and married dad of three small children, who we, along with the Wildwood community, have had the privilege of watching grow along the path to success. Ernest worked at Superfresh from the late 1990s to 2003, when he acquired a higher position at Westside Meats. Over the years, Ernest could be found trucking around town, contributing in his own industrious way to the seaside hamlet he fondly calls home. In the spring of 2013, his seat got a little higher (and his view a little better), when he became a Dietz & Watson union worker.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE The Sun! My trip to Wildwood is not complete until I get my copy of The Sun! ~Diane Hollinger
ERNEST SUTTON OF WILDWOOD, NJ We commend Ernest for being a conscientious member of the community who makes life in our small town rich beyond words.
My brother, Bill Shea, sent me your 10th Anniversary edition this summer and I so enjoyed reading “from the editor” and love all of the artwork and quotes. Congrats on your 10 years! What really caught my attention was the cute pale green watercolor of the ‘back house’, a trusty old 1914 house written by Maureen Saraco. I would like to let her know that her story tugged at my heart strings. Our Dad found us a place to go to each summer at W. 19th Ave. on the bay in N. Wildwood. He would commute like Maureen’s father did in her story The Back House. There are so many similarities that I just had to write and say ‘thank you for the memories” to her. I now reside in the mountains, but Wildwood will always be where some of my very happiest memories are.
Barbie Bliss
Imagine waking up every Christmas morning, eager to find what treasures are waiting under the tree and happily discover a soon-to-be-loved Barbie doll ready to join an ever-expanding collection. Natalie Kuprianov doesn’t have to dream, thanks to her mom, Rose, one of Santa’s hardworking helpers, who has made sure her daughter has received a new Barbie for every occasion since she was born. As the above photos depict, Natalie, now a young adult, stands on the stairway amongst her Barbie collection, which is well over 100 dolls, including ones of Italian & Russian descent, which proudly signify her family anscestry. With so many Barbies to love, which one will be waiting under the Christmas tree this year?
“There’s a sign on the backroads WILDWOOD 17 MILES. For ALL my life that sign made my heart beat faster, produced a smile, sparked memories, opened new ideas, made my foot a little heavier on the gas. All of these are wrapped up in this all encompassing representation of WILDWOOD.” ~David Trottnow (via The Sun Facebook page)
~Suzanne Gallagher
A Wildwood Classic: Who remembers the Sir Oliver Owl Macramé Craft & Pottery Shop in Wildwood Crest and who are these Gringos? Father & Sons in1976 to 1980 are 34 year old Harry DiSylvestro with 10 year old Harry Jr. and 7 year old Tony. Harry recalls this is where his two sons got their bright successful career started when everyone would buy Mexican pots from them just because the boys were so cute and personable. The DiSylvestro boys are now proud owners of the very successful Pizza chain Y Not Pizza in the Virginia Beach area. Harry Di is one very proud dad!
I love looking for The Sun. I always live to put a copy in my renters’ unit, as well as one for my personal enjoyment! ~Jo Scholl (via The Sun Facebook page)

calendar pages dwindle to a few, cool breeze peels the month that away brings us back to school; back to the city to tuck away white shoes and shake out moth balls from wool sweaters.
miles away, a long, honky-tonk boardwalk morphs into a silent flashing red traffic movie; lights preside over empty and locals emerge seaside streets; to wash clothes in a lonely laundromat. our part of the Atlantic ocean rolls on and on, waves soothing beckons weekend and warm to break the quiet, crowds back quiet, quiet. and summer on the island lives on for just awhile longer.

I took advantage of the Marine Fisheries imposed break in October, I pursued another passion of Bow hunting in the Poconos. I enjoy the woods this time of year with the colors and diversity of wildlife. I always find it humbling when you realize how insignificant we can be in nature. Immersed in mountain woods you reflect on the message of nature. Simply observing a huge tree fallen on the forest floor you see the growth of its seeds sprouting the new replacements. The message is every season has it time, reminding me of our own mortality as we pass thru this life. I would be lost without faith and thankfully nature reminds me of this reality. Well, at last we have the Stripers to carry us to the end of the year. They have been late to the dance the last few years. Last year my last and best trip for Stripers occurred the second weekend in December. It sure would be nicer to have them before winter settles upon us making sea conditions difficult. After a nice turkey Thanksgiving dinner, a Striper stuffed with Crab imperial sure is a great follow up meal. I generally produce a Christmas wish list with this last column. I have a very short one this year. I wish for good fishing, great weather, and may you all be blessed by the Almighty for the rest of your days.

Dear Fellow Anglers, Hello and Welcome to the Sun. I find it hard to believe that summer is in the rear view mirror and the fall is swimming down straight fast. I hope you had the opportunity to enjoy a trip on the water while fishing this summer. Hopefully, it was shared with someone special in your life. I found this summer’s fishing a bit of hit and miss personally. The early summer fluke season in the back bay waters held some promise of a good season. Unfortunately, the ocean fluke season seemed real sporadic. The wind this summer was the most persistent pattern that I can remember causing many rough trips and poor drift conditions for fluke. I heard other parts of the state supposedly catching fluke better than our area. If Marine Fisheries says that Fluke were over fished, it certainly was not from our catches in this area. Sea bass were a disappointment as well. I believe Hurricane Sandy torn up the bottom in many places. Wrecks seemed to be sanded over or busted in pieces. I have never seen such an impact on our ocean bottom. This damage would affect the wrecks, which is the prime habitat of the Sea bass. The month of October was a dream month for Marine Fisheries and their regulations. According to the regulations the numbers were 1 and 0. You could keep 1 tog, or 1 weakfish, 0 sea bass, 0 fluke. Plus the fish have to be large enough, which at this time of year the larger ones are hard to find. Traditionally people who fish are optimistic so we can only hope next summer will be better. Less Regulations, more fish, and less wind.
