the SUN by-the-Sea
“In the winter she curls up around a good book and dreams away the cold.” ~Ben Aaronovitch
from the editor “If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard. Because if it isn’t there... I never really lost it to begin with.” ~Dorothy, Wizard of OZ Being the only young person I knew with the name ‘Dorothy’ and growing up as the only artist in my family made me feel a bit different. I was surely my own person, (as my mother would say) and whether it was because of my name or not, I always had several pairs of red shoes in my closet, naturally making me the target of Wizard of Oz comments, the most common being “Where’s Toto?” or “You’re not in Kansas anymore.” Life has led me on a path of creative journeys as well as geographic ones. My first entrepreneurial yard sale was at age 10 selling pet rocks that I painted along with toys that I outgrew. For Christmas, my favorite gifts were the ones I would make. I loved embroidery, knitting, coloring and crafting. I’ve dabbled in stained glass, blown glass, and pottery and have worked in many mediums ~ watercolors and pastels and even ground my own oil paints for some time. I’ve tapped maple trees and made my own syrup, made pumpkin pie from scratch and created color dyes from natural plants. Being a young starving artist, I once bartered an oil painting of my old Birkenstock sandals for a new pair. Fresh out of college, I had a portrait stand at the beach on Cape May’s promenade and started a miniature business manufacturing hand carved and painted replicas of Cape May B&Bs, Lighthouses and English cottages. For 10 years, I had my own fun little factory. As time passed, and with the birth of computer-generated art, I found myself on a new journey as a graphic designer. In 2004, this circuitous path of the artist’s life led me to launch my own paper, The Five Mile Beach Sun, combining my writing, photography and design skills as well as sales (the last of which came out of nowhere). The Wildwood Sun has developed into the area’s favorite paper, or so I am told by the many who read it. I am in awe of the comments and reactions of The Sun’s loyal and vocal fans. More recently, 3 years ago to be exact, with the help of my son Rob, as well as our star salesman JT Williams, we expanded The Sun’s horizon up the coast to Ocean City. It was my son’s favorite surf town while growing up, and we knew Ocean City and The Sun would blend perfectly together. At its inception, readers embraced the nostalgia of The Sun, sending in their vintage beach photos along with their memories and stories of the good old days. The warm welcome that we received convinced me all the more that this is exactly the work that God wants me to do. Making folks happy makes me happy! In September 2013, Rob left The OC Sun behind for NYC where his own career in art & photography was waiting. (And lately he’s been freelancing all over the country.) Meanwhile, Josh Kinney, another fine young creative person who had already been freelancing for The Sun for several years, came onboard as Ocean City Sun’s new managing editor. Going forward, full steam ahead in 2015, Josh will be taking over the wheel as editor in chief and JT, being the jolly spirit that he is, will be moving on to other happy ventures. While I continue to lovingly “man the helm” of the Wildwood edition of The Sun, I’ll be working closely with Josh and his new creative team as they learn the ropes of publishing The OC Sun and bravely set sail on their own. I have every confidence that this new team, with Josh in the lead, will continue the work that I have started, celebrating Ocean City’s rich history and sharing stories of and about the people of Ocean City. When I started the Ocean City edition of The Sun, it was with the sincere purpose of honoring its locals and visitors and my hope is that this new venture, for this brand-new team, will be as rewarding for them as it has been for me. Like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, I’m a true homebody. I know I don’t need to look any further than my own backyard for the happiness I seek. I don’t need to click my red shoes to know there’s no place like home. Home is right here in my Wildwood by the sea. Have a very Merry Christmas, There’s no place like home.
Dorothy

A Gift from Gia
n the true holiday spirit, we are compelled to want to give. There are many organizations that vie for our generous hearts at Christmastime. A well known local Wildwood family, the Chiarella’s, would like to call upon your hearts once again to support their annual “Gift from Gia” program. The Chiarella’s have used their broken hearts over the past 15 years to bless the many children who must spend their Christmas inside Cooper Hospital. Their sadness at Christmastime is now softened every year by an unspeakable joy that only comes from a giving heart. In that spirit, their daughter Gia’s memory continues to live on. Gifts may be dropped off unwrapped at their home or at GIA, 7400 Ocean Ave. in Wildwood Crest. Call Beth, Mia or Vincent Chiarella at 609-729-5959 to make a donation

12/5/14 Hereford Inlet Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony 5:30 p.m.
The photos featured on this page are from Dec. 6, 2013 ~ There was a bit of magic in the salty air on this particular evening
surrounding the historic Hereford Inlet Lighthouse...even though a few snowflakes would have been nice to see, we were lucky to have a light misty rain fall instead of the heavy rains as were predicted. In the courtyard, crowds gathered to hear the Margaret Mace school choir sing carols, as well as Peter Harp entertain with his maritime folk songs. It was a special moment when Mayor Bill Henfey arrived to officially light the tree for one last time as mayor of North Wildwood. The children gathered around as they tried to wait patiently for the arrival of Santa, who traveled by way of a very shiny & bright Fire truck. If you weren’t able to make it, try not to miss this special event this year, Fri. December 5th at 5:30pm. It is like a scene in Bedford Falls in the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” old fashioned and quaint.

“Where we love is home, home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.” ~ Oliver Wendell Holmes The Capt. Charles J. and Lydia Crawford House - 1852
The House of Christmas Past
~ Restoration of the Crawford House~
by Jessica Westerland Mumford
Many of us have snippets of information about our family lines, hazy assertions, and “I’m pretty sure that…” kind of stories passed down by word of mouth around family dinners or at holiday parties. Having solid facts and relics of your family’s lineage are a little harder to collect, but are well worth the research. Lin Gooch always wondered about her family history, and knew one important fact: Her family was from Dennisville NJ. Her grandmother Clara told her this much, along with the fact that her husband would not let her move back there, because “the mosquitoes would carry you away!” But that wasn’t enough, there was more to be learned, and as she grew older, Lin realized it was important to her to discover more about her family. She used to attend the Historic House Tour at Christmas time, and when she was in Dennisville she would stop by the township hall with her husband Don in search of more information. Unfortunately they always needed an address to start a search, so they were never able to get anywhere. Lin’s next step was with Ancestry.com. “I could be a commercial for the website,” Lin laughed. She traced her family to her great-grandparents Levi and Ella Wentzell and then to her great-great-grandparents through a census, Charles and Lydia Crawford. Next she found more info about Charles, it turns out he was a sloop captain who would ferry goods up and down the Delaware Bay. Lin realized that she had seen that name before! She had seen it on one of the plaques that many of the historic homes in Dennisville have, with the year built and owner’s names on it. These plaques are courtesy of the Dennisville Historic Home Owners Association. She thought this could be it- her ancestors home! To be sure, she emailed the association’s president, Jack Connolly. As it turns out, the house belonged to Jack Connolly and his partner Jerry McManus. Lin began talking to them about how she could possibly be connected to their home. Jack had historian Michael Connolly do some research as well, and then invited Lin and Don to lunch in his home. While she was sitting at the table, Jack put some papers down in front of her, full of the results of his research. It showed that her ancestor Captain Charles and Lydia Crawford indeed used to own the home! “It sent chills through me,” Lin said. “I was in search of this for years and there I was sitting in the dining room of my greatgreat-grandparents’ very home!”
Captain Crawford purchased the land for the home in 1851 for $110. The house was built in 1852. When he was not at sea, Captain Crawford and his wife Lydia, their 4 children, and Lydia’s father Joseph lived in the house, which originally was one room downstairs and two upstairs with no interior plumbing. In addition to being able to spend time in and near her family’s home, Lin also has a Bible that belonged to Captain Crawford. The Bible has hair, dried flowers, and other bits of the past stored inside of it. The best part was that this Bible was passed around to different members of the family, including one who lived in California, and eventually made it’s way to Lin’s father, and then to her. It survived many years and numerous owners, and thankfully ended up in the hands of one of the most diligent students of their family history, Lin. Around 5 years ago, Lin and Don decided to move to Dennisville from Westville NJ. They purchased a home less then a block away, another historic house previously owned by Enoch James, a local farmer. The house needed a lot of love, which the couple happily supplied along with a lot of hard work and perseverance. Now they live in a home gorgeously restored, and just a few buildings away from where her ancestors used to live. Last Christmas, Lin also had another chance to keep her past alive. Jack Connolly and Lin Gooch both had their homes in the Dennisville House tour, and the Charles and Lydia Crawford home was the featured house! Jack invited Lin to be part of the tour, and she stood in the dining room with Captain Crawford’s Bible and told visitors about her research and journey to discovering her family’s connection to the house, and then some more history on the lives of Charles and Lydia. “It was so amazing to be part of tour… such an honor for me to tell about my family that night.” There is a quote in the Bible that perfectly exemplifies what Lin Gooch has done in her life. She has made the past real, made it come alive, and not just for herself- but for all the others who hear her story. And just maybe someone will go home and be inspired to do the same in their own lives! “Do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your children’s children.” ~ Deut. 4:9
Levi and Ella Wentzell
^Charles & Clara Mailley Lin’s grandmother Clara’s maiden name was Wentzell. Her mother Ella’s maiden name was Crawford. Her parents were Charles and Lydia Crawford.
In July 1988, the current owners purchased the Crawford House. The house was in deplorable condition: few windows or doors, floors that had more openings to the dirt than floor boards and holes in the roof and walls. Trees and shrubbery hid the house almost entirely from the street and the yard. In fact the house was slated for demolition and resale of the land.

“If we were all likes angels, the world would be a Heavenly place.” Have you ever wished life could be more like a Christmas movie, where angels walk among mere mortals (a.k.a. characters in distress?) For Donna Jean Adams, her life took on all the characteristics of a holiday film, complete with countless angels in disguise, during the fall of 2013. Single mom and waitress extraordinaire Donna Jean Adams loves taking care of everyone else, with an ever-present smile to show she truly cares. Her self-described It’s a Wonderful Life story began on October 6, 2013 when she tore a ligament and was unable to work. Because she didn’t have health insurance and was living paycheck to paycheck, she wasn’t able to have the surgery she needed. Sadly, when it rains it pours, as the saying goes, and soon she was contending with broken heaters, a broken-down car and a quickly-approaching Christmas. With limited options, she contacted every agency she knew of, including the Senator for help. Living in a small town does have its advantages, she would soon learn, as word rapidly spread around our little island with the big heart that Donna Jean was in need of help. It’s been said that miracles abound at Christmas time, something Donna Jean can happily confirm. Friends and anonymous donors generously reached out to her during her desperate time of need. Even without state or government assistance, some wonderful person offered to pay all of her bills, some other wonderful people left boxes of food on her

doorstep; others brougt all the necessary ingredients to bake Christmas cookies, something Donna Jean loves doing every year. So many blessings were occurring around her that she started tracking them all in a journal. With Christmas getting closer, Donna Jean witnessed her miracle unfolding; believing God’s loving hand was guiding it all. Through it all, she showed her grown sons what real faith looks like simply by trusting in God through life’s hardest times. They also saw what real love looks like thanks to a supportive community. The holidays passed and a grateful Donna Jean returned to school with her spirit renewed. She was finally approved for surgery right before Easter. By July, she was fully healed and started a job as a hospice aid, a calling that speaks to the caretaker in her. So much of her life was spent pouring out her heart to others. That love was reciprocated back to her a hundred fold during the Christmas of 2013. She is truly thankful to all those angels who were there for her and her family. She agrees with Clarence the angel when he told George Bailey, “No man is a failure who has friends.”’ Thanks to Donna Jean’s seaside friends, her world is a Heavenly place.

The Starlight Ballroom on the boardwalk (L-R) Ron Borden, Joe Hess, George Anderson, John Kill, Robert Ansell & Benny Mawhinney, 2010
(L-R) Joe Hess, Ron Borden, George Anderson,& Benny Mawhinney, 2014
Joe Hess, Mike Burke, Jimmy Brown, and
George Anderson once had a brief career as a singing group called The Ovations. Back in the early 60’s, the four of us mentioned above were sitting in Angie & Lloyd’s Restaurant, owned by Joe’s parents Angie & Lloyd Hess. Joe had a record that he played for us and suggested that perhaps we could pretend to be the singers on that record, since the song was pretty simple. The name of the song was called ‘Oh What A Day’ or ‘The Day We Fell In Love’. The four of us traveled to Philadelphia to a recording studio that was paid for by Joe’s uncle. We spent about six to seven hours in the studio with studio musicians and after a long tenuous discussion the producer decided that Jimmy would do the lead and the rest of us would do back up harmony. The record we cut was a demo and a flip side would be recorded at a later date. If all went as planned the record would be released locally, meaning the Philadelphia, South Jersey area, by early to mid-July. Convincing our friends that this record was actually recorded by us proved to be a little easier than we first anticipated. Since most of us liked to sing and often did doo wop on the corner of Pacific & Oak Avenues, better known at that time as P & O, our story sounded believable. The word spread around town pretty quickly about us- The Ovations. We all enjoyed the notoriety and actually started believing that we were the individuals on
THAT record. We did our best to keep our composures and not blow our cover. After all we WERE The Ovations and there was no backing out now. Starlight Ballroom at Oak and the Boardwalk was about to open for the summer and a few of our friends suggested that since we, meaning The P & O Boys and all our friends, were regulars at the dances that perhaps we should take our record there and have it played. We said that since the record hadn’t been officially released yet, and all we had was the ‘demo’ we didn’t think that it was legal for us to do so, or something to that effect. When Starlight opened, we all attended opening night as we usually did. Someone in our crowd had mentioned to one of the staff that there were four guys from Wildwood that had a record coming out shortly. Eventually D.J. Jack Lawlor got wind of this and wanted to know who these four individuals were. I don’t recall exactly what Jack Lawlor said, but it went something like this. “We have four young Wildwood boys here tonight that will have a record coming out real soon.” People started pointing at us and waving and the girls smiled at us. Even though the song had yet to be played, we were still celebrities, and we were doing our best to pull it off. Our excuses for why the song hadn’t been released yet kept growing. The four of us knew that eventually the truth would come out and we would be exposed. But, we were passed the point of no return now and we had to play it out until that time came, hoping that some way, somehow we could get through the whole thing without being totally embarrassed. Each night we went to Starlight we would hope to somehow go unnoticed, but that wasn’t the case. Someone would make a big deal out of us. We would enter the dance one at a time or sometimes just not go, but that didn’t work either. Finally the big night came…..How would we deal with our down fall? Mike and I were approached by a young man at the refreshment stand who said something to the effect – “Are you two
George Anderson 1959
Ronald P. Borden WHS 1963
George Anderson & Benny Mawhinney outside of Allen’s Men’s Shop on Pacific Ave. in the 1960s
of the Ovations?” Mike and I looked at each and just nodded yes. “No you ain’t. You ain’t the Ovations. The Ovations are colored and you don’t look colored to me, man.” Needless to say we were speechless, flustered and embarrassed. I sounded like Jackie Gleason for a few seconds there with a ‘Homma na homma na homma na’. He claimed he went to school with one of the Ovations in Tennessee, and the song we said was ours was not. The song was released a couple of years before. We knew at that moment it was time for us to leave. We continued to stay away from the dance for about a week or so. It didn’t take long for the word to get around that we were ‘phonies, or fakes.’ Our crowd handled it better than expected. Some even said. ‘We really didn’t believe you guys anyway.’ We knew they said that because they really WERE taken in by our story and didn’t want to appear that naïve or gullible. It took a great deal of courage for us to finally step back into Starlight. We took a lot of ribbing and kidding in the following weeks, but we did our best to not show our true feelings and went along with the ribbing and joking, and the one big question, “When’s your next record coming out?” Followed by laughter. For a brief time that summer we were celebrities. It was a wonderful feeling being a star. It was a short career that ended with four good friends taking something a little too far and having it come to an embarrassing end. It was fun while it lasted. The P & O Boys were known for pulling pranks, doing stupid things, daring each other, having fun, hanging out, dancing, singing, etc. We are all too old to do any of that stuff now, but those days will always be a part of our memories. And being The Ovations for that short period of time is engraved in our minds forever.

Today was my last day at the Trailer... The weather was kind of fitting for such a departure: Autumn bright sun, blustery with falling leaves swirling and skidding along the crushed shell path, piling up in the nooks and against the trees making the winter grave blanket for Mother Earth...The Campground was just about empty and very quiet with faint woodsmoke and foraging squirrels...The Last of the Mohicans waved goodbye to one another as they drove off at a funeral pace in their SUV covered wagons-- the ones pulled by invisible horses--as the somber strings of my 60th Autumn unfolds...It was a very good summer; I look forward to opening up next spring...

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
The historic Hereford Lighthouse & Gardens is perhaps the prettiest spot on the island no matter what the season
With our suntans fading, our shorts and tank tops packed away and our waist lines probably growing, summer is now just a happy, distant memory. Despite this, believe it or not, winter is the time I really appreciate living at the shore. It’s not because of the cold, dismal weather but rather the fact that we are settled back into the quiet and laid back life that those of us who left the big city areas came here for. I’ve been here for 39 years and long ago lost any sentimentality for what I left behind. That includes concerts, sporting events, museums and everything else. If I never saw another big city it would not bother me in the least. All of us year round residents enjoy the summer activities but most of us do tend to hole up a bit during the heart of the season. Winter, however, is a time I can’t help reflecting on the great blessing those of us fortunate enough to live here have been bestowed. Few places in the Northeast can surpass the quiet beauty and small town life to be found in Cape May County. I often wonder how many of us realize how lucky we are to live here. I think a lot of us take it for granted and others, like some people everywhere, are never satisfied and would complain no matter where they lived. Most of these seem to be city transplants, like myself, rather than life long natives. Not all of my fellow newcomers are chronic complainers, just enough to bug me. I agree, New Jerseys’ taxes are outrageous and a very legitimate complaint. The local property tax reassessments after the building boom made it extremely tough for many of us. The new flood maps and mandated higher elevation requirements as a result of Hurricane Sandy can also be legitimate complaints. Same goes for the huge expected increases in flood insurance. There’s no sense in complaining about the storm itself though. That is one of the risks we have elected to take when we moved this close to the coast, so we should be resolved to accept what comes. The complaints I can’t agree with however, are the lack of stores, services, chain restaurants, shopping malls, industry and bigger and more direct highways. The “lack of” has always been the way it was in Cape May County and it has survived for 320 years. If we had all of these things, including the jobs they would create, wouldn’t our area start to resemble the places that we left and wouldn’t we have the problems that go with them?

. . .a fresh fallen snow along the seawall
. . .a quiet ride along Ocean Drive
I’ve heard complaints from new arrivals about our old fashioned draw bridges, that sand blows onto their beach front property, that a lighthouse beacon flashes into their bedroom window, that seagulls drop clam shells on their driveway and that their condo (built next to a marina), has the smell of fish coming through their window. I hear them complain about the noontime fire whistle and believe it or not – church bells. The most maddening comment from my fellow transplants is “Back home we used to do it this way – etc. etc.” Natives especially hate this. These folks should stop for a minute, once in a while, and remind themselves of the cities they left behind with their over population, crime, pollution and all the other horrors of the rat race that plague them. Here we are though, on this little peninsula on the southern tip of the most densely populated state, but our own County averages only 380 people per square mile. The population does increase tremendously during the summer but the economy needs this and besides it’s a nice change of pace for a couple of months Our geographic isolation and the fact that we are hemmed in on all sides by a diverse and beautiful natural environment, are the main reasons we moved here and why we still enjoy a kind of sanctuary in this crowded, hectic world. The Countys narrow mainland is bordered on the east by pristine salt marshes, the beautiful sounds and channels of the inter coastal waterway, barrier islands and the great Atlantic. On the west side we have more preserved wetlands and the Delaware Bay. These surrounding natural borders brought us and the tourists here but have also protected us from excessive growth and over development. Within just a short distance from most of us, we can fish, swim, hunt, go boating, birding or just lay back and take in the beautiful vistas. One of the rare and special treats we have is being able to see both a sunrise over the water (the ocean) and a sunset over the water (the Delaware Bay) in the same day. Then there’s the great climate. We have always had milder weather than Philadelphia because of the proximity of the Gulf Stream, just off the coast. Now with climate change, the U.S.D.A plant hardiness map has been changed, putting us into zone 7B – the same as northeast Virginia.
The winter is also the best time to appreciate the wonderful and diverse little communities we have in Cape May County. In these small towns you can really get to know your neighbors and actually feel part of your community, much more than in a big city. You probably even get to know your town’s mayor on a first name basis. My grandmother who lived in North Wildwood for years always referred to it lovingly as “Mayberry by the Sea”. If you have time and you care to, there are dozens of places for you to volunteer and help out. This is the best way to get involved and to get to know everyone. It’s a very rewarding feeling “to give back”, and in a little community, sometimes one person can make a big difference. You can experience a wonderful community spirit first hand at your local churches, recreation and senior centers, fire halls, fraternal organizations and at kids sporting events. You can see small town America at its very best especially at the huge turnouts at fundraisers for someone in need or during public emergencies. There’s no better example of this, than in seeing these communities responses during and after Hurricane Sandy. So I have some advice to everyone that lives down here; please take a walk on the seawall or boardwalk early one morning. Sit down on a bench, breathe in the fresh air and smell the sea, feel the ocean breeze caress your face. Listen to the roar of the ocean and the sound of the gulls. Look out over some of the best beaches in the world. Watch the surf break on the Eastern Continental shelf. Picture Europe almost 3,000 miles across the wide Atlantic. Think of the millions of Americans who have never even seen an ocean. Now take a minute to think of the alternative. You could be stuck right now in traffic in the city you came from, breathing in poisonous air, hearing the constant scream of police sirens and wondering if that other sound you heard is a back fire noise or a gunshot. Eventually you get out of the traffic jam and head to, with the doors locked, whatever safe little enclave of the city you call home. When you get there don’t forget to double lock your front door and turn on the alarm. Now after this little bit of daydreaming, leave the boardwalk and go to your favorite little café where everyone knows your name and have a nice cup of coffee and a donut. Then think back and count your blessings.

The Sears Wish Book, a Christmas Tradition by KIRK HASTINGS
When I was a kid growing up in the 1960s, October meant colder weather, leaves falling, school (unfortunately), and Christmas. Christmas? Yes, Christmas! For that was when the annual Sears Christmas Wish Book catalog came in the mail! The very first Sears Christmas Book catalog came out in 1933. The 1933 Christmas Book catalog started a tradition that eventually made it an American icon. After 1933, the Wish Book name became synonymous with the annual Christmas catalog. In 1968, Sears made it official by renaming the Christmas catalog The Wish Book. The 1933 Christmas Book catalog cover had only illustrated some of the items in the catalog. But in 1934 Sears started a tradition by putting colorful Christmas scenes on the cover. From then on, the Wish Book catalog covers regularly featured children, Santa Claus, and Christmas trees. The Wish Book was firmly embraced in the late 1950s and 1960s by baby boomer kids -- me included. Who doesn’t remember poring through its magical pages every October/November, checking off all the terrific new toys on its pages that we hoped we would get the following Christmas? (At the same time praying that none of our presents would turn out to be -- horror of horrors -- clothing!) Here are some of the fondly-remembered toys I received growing up. Ironically, most of the toys we got from the Sears Wish Book during the 1960s are rare collector’s items now, worth hundreds -- sometimes even thousands of dollars. (That’s if you can find them in decent condition, since most of us played the heck out of them!)
1961: The Flintstones Bedrock Play Set by Marx Toys. A 64-piece set reproducing buildings, people, cars, palm trees, and even dinosaurs from the popular cartoon that had just debuted on TV the year before.
For the majority of us those childhood toys are now all long gone. But the happy memories of the years leafing through the Sears Christmas Wish Book every Fall -- and receiving some of the toys we fervently hoped for that Christmas -- still remains.
1962: The Ben-Hur Play Set by Marx Toys. What kid didn’t want to restage the chariot race featured in the epic 1959 movie, with this glorious 132-piece set that recreated the entire Roman arena (complete with soldiers and gladiators!) from that film?
1963: The Big Caesar Galley Ship by Remco. This 29-inchlong motorized Roman galley could actually move across the floor, its oars moving back and forth to keep time with its progress. The set featured 50 Roman soldiers, 4 catapults, 2 horse-drawn chariots, and a big cardboard castle!
1964: Hamilton’s Invaders by Remco. This 17-piece set enabled us to stage our own science fiction battles between a huge 11-inch bug and a 9-inch giant spider, that with a pull of their cords could scuttle across the floor and attack the 9 soldiers, a tank that could shoot plastic shells, and a helicopter that could drop plastic bombs. Three additional mini-monsters were even included!
1965: The D-Day Play Set by Marx Toys. This set was available in different sizes, the largest featuring 350 pieces that included American GIs, German soldiers, tanks, jeeps, cannons, landing craft, halftracks, pillboxes, planes, pontoon bridges, etc. Just the thing to recreate those fantastic battles you saw on TV on shows like “Combat!” and “The Gallant Men”!
1966: Batman Bat-Cave Set by Ideal. 1966 was the year of Batmania, as the innovative TV show took over the country by storm. And this set was the perfect accompaniment, with its reproduction Bat-Cave, Batmobile, and Batplane. It also featured 3 ¼-inch Batman and Robin figures, and 6 nasty villains!

In our best penmanship, we would write the catalogue number, page number and price so Santa would not be mistaken. Our Wildwood Holiday byJulie Csahok
At 4:10 a.m., I excitedly check my phone; only 15 more minutes until the alarm rings and our annual trip to the Wildwoods begins! We leave Pittsburgh at 6 a.m. and several pit stops and Julie & Daisy eight hours later, our tour bus arrives at the Jersey shore. A soothing sea breeze greets us as we exit the bus, letting us know we had finally made it to our favorite seaside destination! Naturally we head right up to the boardwalk for our traditional first stop - Sam’s Pizza for a slice and a birch, which is always followed by a Kohr Bros. ice cream cone. Reminiscent sounds of the tram car, music playing, and of course, the seagulls, all assure us that we’ve reached paradise. Our week in our island paradise consists of traditional things such as the beach and pool in the daytime and boards at nighttime. Gateway 26 and Fascination are among my family’s favorite nightly visits. Our week would not be complete without a special trip to Groff’s Restaurant for a delicious meal enjoyed with special friends. My family spends five days in Wildwood every year, from Sunday to Friday. By Thursday, I get emotional realizing I won’t be experiencing these Wildwood days again for another year. No matter how hard you try to slow down time, it always seems to slip away like sand running through my hands. With each passing year, it gets harder and harder to say good bye. I remind myself that these days, along with the kindhearted people we meet every year, create memories that will last forever. So, we cash in our tickets at Gateway 26, collect our prizes and enjoy our last Wildwood cuisine of the year before I console myself with the thought that for visitors to Wildwood by-the-sea, it’s never “goodbye” but merely “See you later!” Beginning January 1st, we officially begin our Wildwood countdown to the Summer of 2015!

Mr. Oyster may not be able to swim like the other creatures of the sea, nor is he colorful or agile, but he’s got a secret... one that makes him just as beautiful as any of his friends in the sea! Mr. Oyster’s Secret is a beautifully illustrated children’s book that teaches youngsters the importance of inner beauty. Through Mr. Oyster, young readers learn that what is on the outside is not what counts; true beauty lies within. Indeed, it’s inner beauty that matters most of all.

Growing up in Wildwood by-the-Sea {Photos submitted by Deatle of the Domenick & Cora Piro family}
It’s been wisely said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Photographs are our memory keepers and preservers of lives well-lived. For those lucky enough to grow up in our seaside abode, pictures depict more than a sunny, solitary season of beach days and boardwalk nights. They encompass every season, from summertime to Santa Claus, military moments and family adventures, with endless opportunities to capture in time every event that happily occurred by the sea…

It's high tide. The sea unfurls and laps softly against the sand, kissing the beach. I wave to a friendly fisherman as I head south, and watch him cast his line. I wonder what he'll catch today. Salt air fills my lungs. My spirits are rising, and all of my troubles seem so far away. This is exactly where I want to be. In the distance, the form of the Great Nor'Easter roller coaster pushes through the early morning haze. I think about all that's in front of me - literally and figuratively. All the summer fun to come, this year, next year, and beyond. All of the memories to be made in this place that has become such a vital part of my existence. My refuge. My escape. My passion. I love Wildwood so much, and I thank God that I'm here - if sometimes, only in my thoughts and dreams. 365 days a year. Always... and forever.

Its time to finally admit the summer season is over. Try as I might to believe there will be another beach day, I know its too cool to try and sit on the sand. The tourists are gone. The trees are almost bare, the sun sets earlier, we have all the parking we need, the markets have no lines. But its bittersweet, we complain about the noise and crowds but when its over and the people are gone we miss it. Okay! Vacation mode is over and the reality of closing the shore house for the season sets in. We do it a little at a time so we can do the "summer" thing almost until we have to do the "snow" thing. Starting with the outside "rooms" (patio, deck, porch) we clean and store, and we know how windy it is on the island so there is a coating of sand on everything. And even when we get to the inside we sweep up a lot of sand, it’s hard to believe the amount of sand, (and there wasn’t any wind inside!) When we first remodeled the house years ago everyone was conscious of the new furniture and rugs, so shoes came off before entering the house. All beach stuff was shaken out and outdoor showers were used. Many people have a mud room, ours was labeled Sand Room. We had cute signs all over reminding everyone to leave the sand on the beach where it belongs.
But as the family got used to the house they would forget to remove their shoes, I even bought terry flip flops for everyone, but they got left in bedrooms and the sandy, beach flip flops were tossed inside the front door. Yes, they take outdoor showers, but first they would have to run inside (full of sand) to get the towel or change of clothes they forgot to put near the shower shack. I have nothing against beach sand, I love it but please, not in my house. I even helped my son collect sand from different beaches. Anytime a family member went on vacation to a beach area they would bring back a vial of sand. He has sand from places like Hawaii, Sicily, California, Key West, to name a few. It’s amazing to see the different textures and colors. I may be prejudice but the Wildwoods are right up there near the top of the list of best sand As a grandma my favorite thing is watching my grandchildren on their first time at the beach. I love to watch the expression on their faces when they first put their tiny feet in the sand. It takes some time for them to realize they can play in it. And still later for them to be brave enough to roll around and throw it and become little sand men, (that’s the point when they bring it back to the house on them). This year I kept thinking of the phrase, “sands of time”. Our shore house has so many memories. Our young sons playing on the beach, their teen years with summer jobs, the many friends staying over, then the special friends that became part of our family. The happy milestones celebrated with shore house parties, the new babies, etc. Now those sands are dropping faster then I would like, as life goes on and between jobs and school and sports sometimes it’s difficult for all of us to get to the shore house together. Maybe I’ll stop complaining about the sand and just enjoy the memories we are creating now, no matter how much sand leaves the beach and makes it to our house.
peace, love, joy always

My definition of success is…..totally opposite! I don’t believe being successful is being rich or being famous (it’s so much more than that!) You can be rich yet unsuccessful at the same time. To me, success is setting goals, sticking to them, and reaching them. I can’t, I won’t make it, I’m not sure…these phrases are not a part of my vernacular. With that being said , Chefarella is here to guide and give you some tips as well as share my culinary journey with you! Now, it’s been quite a year for me and I couldn’t be more thankful than to have such tremendous support from all of you! BIG things have happened, starting with my debut on THE FOOD NETWORK show, KITCHEN CASINO, (which has been a goal of mine since I was 17). This led to me being picked up by THE NADER AGENCY, which is a boutique agency for celebrity chefs. I was also nominated for and won ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY’S Top 40 Under 40, which applauds young people from the area who have achieved success. I landed the cover for a fitness magazine, and had a cover story written about me in the PRESS OF ATLANTIC CITY. I’m not here to boast about myself, but none of this came easily! It’s been a rough bumpy road, but at the end of the day the key to success lies in your hands. I just want you all to remember that without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it. Now how you win it starts here. Listen closely. More than one reason is an excuse. Instead of coming up with reasons why you can’t, sit down and come up with a solution for each excuse you have. You deserve everything you work hard for; so while you’re here on earth do not doubt yourself! We all know the universe isn’t going to just hand us something, you need to do the work. You need to cultivate and maintain, so you can watch it grow. Once it does, just stick with it...trust in yourself ...push yourself to create the life you want. Prove to yourself that the things you stand for do have value. You are incredible and this is what you were born to do! I followed these tips throughout my many trials, the doors shut on me, I turned that into a positive and just pushed harder! Now I’ll be on a Primetime TV show this winter and I couldn’t be more thankful! Inever gave up! Sometimes you need to knock on a lot of doors to get where you want. Some may shut on your face, but don’t let that discourage you! Keep on striving and never let that phase you. Have a Happy and Healthy Holiday. Much Love & SUCCESS!! Mia Chefarella

On Saturday, September 13th, 2014, Albert & Lois Rolek were married under umbrellas on the Crest Fishing Pier. Due to the inclement weather, they decided against arriving in tram-car style with their 60 guests to Crest Community Church, where they danced for hours and enjoyed a delicious dinner catered by Little Italy Restaurant. Lois has fond memories of her childhood family vacations here every summer. In 2008, following a 20-year absence and a visit with a Wildwood friend, she bought a place on Heather Road, loving everything the island provides. It was only natural that the happy couple chose to spend their first official day as husband and wife in our lovable little town by the sea! Best wishes to them both! THE SUN went on a thrilling adventure with the Gorczyca’s of Melbourne Florida to visit the town made famous by The Birds. The Birds is a 1963 horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock that depicts Bodega Bay, California, which is, suddenly and for unexplained reasons, the subject of a series of widespread and violent bird attacks. Here are Ed & Carol Gorczyca with THE SUN in front of St. Theresa’s church which was featured in the movie, and inside the museum designated to the film.

The summer of 2014 was a good summer for the business people of the Wildwoods, from all the reports that I have heard. We missed most of the storms around the country. It could have been a little hotter but the Ocean was warm. The Wildwood Historical Museum had a very good year with attendance up from the last two years. The Board was more aggressive advertising this year and it paid off. A lot of new faces, looking to research their fond memories, of the past, spent in the Wildwoods. The Wildwood High School sophomore English Class visited the Museum on October 24th. A special thanks to John Roat for giving a lecture about the Wildwoods. The students were impressed with all the artifacts and information that the Museum offered about Wildwood. We had the Paranormal Teen Society visit the Museum a couple of times in the past year; they would set up all their equipment and from 5 PM till midnight record data. Later, they would spend hours going over their findings. On October 25th, they came down from Hammonton, gave tours at the Museum and explained and showed what they had found. One hundred and five people attended. Everyone was impressed and surprised with their findings. We will do it again sometime sooooon. The Museum is now closed for the winter months. You can call and leave a message, 609-523-0277, if you and/or your Club or
Organization would like to have one of your monthly meetings at the Museum. We can seat up to 35 people. The Historical Society is in need of Board Members; The Museum cannot survive unless some people step forward and become Board Members and or volunteer to help. It is fun and a labor of Love. You don’t have to live in Wildwood to become a Board Member and/or a volunteer. A special thanks to our volunteers this summer Vicki Bundschu, Judy Carr, Joan Husband, Inge Laine, and Caille Wendail for the hours they spend scanning pictures to CD’s. Also a special thanks to Ron Griffith. The Museum is still in need for Business or people to sponsor converting the Leaders from 1898 to the 1970’s. The cost is $3500.00 for 10 years of newspapers. This Holiday Season, the gift to buy that will last forever, is an engraved paver from our BUY A BRICK PROGRAM. Bricks are installed just outside the front door of the Museum. It’s a great way to remember someone today and years from now. ABS Sign Company is still working on the restoration of the Center City Clock. It will be completed by spring and then we can put it up for display. The Tram Car is on its way to the Museum. If you are cleaning out the attic, please donate any pictures, artifacts pertaining to the Wildwood’s to the Museum. The Museum Board hopes everyone has a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and a Happy New Year. God Bless.

2014 WINTER MOVIE GUIDE by Meg Corcoran
urrounded by a frosty yet friendly surf, Wildwood citizens and Hollywood characters have united to find the true meaning of the holiday season. They quickly determine they’ll need a Big Hero 6 times larger than your average leading man for the answers they seek. The Horrible Bosses 2 appalling for the assignment are clearly out, so they spend their days searching in vain for dreadful coastal activities (instantly enthralled by the wack-a-mole). Since the heroic Penguins of Madagascar prefer to spend their time boogie boarding, it’s up to our soulful Annie to reveal the significance of the season (spending seaside time with loved ones, watching sensational films and waiting for Santa Clause). While enjoying The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1, our cast is inspired to share a part of their satisfying tale on the sandy stage… Before arriving at your neighborhood Hollywood-inspired movie theater, please check your local listings for release date changes… Occurring in future, Interstellar (opens November 7th) times, Earth is unable to produce enough food to feed its population, causing the seagulls to be the first to flee and compelling a widowed engineer (Matthew McConaughey) to join a gang of scientists (including Anne Hathaway) in search of answers. Robot Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit) enjoys long beach walks and wishing beneath starry skies. His lovable nature is called into question when the storybook city San Fransokyo is attacked. Can teen wonder Hiro (Ryan Potter) turn the big softie into a Big Hero 6 (opens November 7th) times over? With beach days a thing of the past, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1 (opens November 21st) promises to provide an entertaining diversion thanks to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), who becomes the reluctant symbol of rebellion against the tyrannical Capitol. With no Horrible Bosses 2 (opens November 26th) ruin their moneymaking ideas, three luckless inventors (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day) find inspiration among the shops on Pacific Avenue and create a unique contraption ultimately stolen by father/son investors (Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine). The Penguins of Madagascar (opens November 26th) skip the Jersey Shore Beach
‘n Boat Fishing Tournament as well as circus life to join the North Wind, a topsecret animal rescue group, where they encounter an old enemy (voice of John Malkovich). A grieving, troubled woman (Reese Witherspoon) takes a solo, life-altering journey into the Wild (opens December 5th) trails through the American Northwest, only to discover the healing benefits surrounding Wildwood’s panoramic Seawall. Uplifted by the camaraderie experienced at the Cheer Tech Spirit Nation Championships, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (opens December 17th) finds Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and his Dwarves on a journey to slay the dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) and reclaim Erebor and the treasure. The Hereford Inlet Lighthouse Christmas Tree Lightning illuminates a Night at the Museum: (where the) Secret of the Tomb (opens December 19th) is discovered by museum security guard Larry (Ben Stiller), who travels to London to repair the stone tablet that brings exhibits (including the late Robin Williams) to life. A Family Holiday Celebration is in order for Annie (Quvenzhane Wallis, opens December 19th), a foster kid living in NYC with her dog, Sandy and mean foster mom, Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz), when she meets the mayoral candidate (Jamie Foxx) destined to change her life. It’s no boardwalk jaunt for those traveling Into the Woods (Opens December 25th) with a witch (Meryl Streep), who has creepy encounters with popular fairy tale characters including Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) and the big bad Wolf (Johnny Depp) in the Disney version of the Broadway musical. A Night at the Museum: (reveals the) Secret of the Tomb as well as what makes the visitors of Wildwood so starry-eyed and (Inter) stellar. Beneath those planetary lights, Wild (but wonderful) characters roam, traveling Into the Wood(ed) trails just off the beach, where The Hobbit: (declines) The Battle of the Five Armies to find the perfect sandy souvenir (for the humanoid on everyone’s Christmas list). Our characters ultimately realize they’ve already been given the greatest gift of all and vow to savor a cozy winter spent happily by the enchanting sea…

Autumn Fishing Report & Christmas Wish List Dear Fellow Anglers The Holiday season can be a time of peaceful reflection or primetime for hot striper fishing. The fishing options have become limited this time of year, but it makes the challenges better. Striper fishing can be wet, cold, miserable fishing in very rough seas conditions. Stripers can be finicky which makes them even more difficult to catch. Your probably asking yourself by now then why the heck do they fish for them? Striper fishing with live bait allows such a personal encounter with feeling the fish take the bait and the angler timing the strike on the fish. Stripers give a unique and decent battle on light tackle. These experiences won’t happen every trip so they are to be cherished. The striper as table fare stuffed with crabmeat and baked is superb. Striper fishermen can be rather fanatical pursuing their quarry. Stripers can be caught in many different locations. Surf, back bays, and the ocean. They can be caught on dead bait, live bait and will chase many types of lures. My favorite is top water fishing with surface plugs when the fish are feeding on top for bait fish. Its exciting as they chase your lure splashing and swirling until they finally grab it and start the tug of war. I can give you one great tip if you get the chance to go striper fishing. You can never have enough warm clothes. The season can run into January with decent weather so don’t quit to early. My thoughts on the past summer fishing. I wish that Marine Fisheries would explain why after all their restrictions the major seasonal fish species have not improved. Could it be the commercial fishermen are allowed to catch all those 15 inch flounder and 9 inch sea bass before they become the 18 inch flounder or 12.5 inch sea bass to catch on hook and line. The fall season should

have some sea bass and tog which can be caught on inshore wrecks with the bass moving farther off shore as the ocean cools down. That is, if you can coordinate your time when the seasons are open. Some of the best blue fishing can occur this time of year. The bigger Bluefish will hit the Delaware Bay chasing bunker schools. You better have some stout equipment to handle these tackle busters. By the way, keep your fingers clear of their mouths if you would like to keep them in the original form. You will know when to quit for the year when you get tired of pulling in spinney dogfish (sharks). I realize Christmas is coming so I will give you my 2014 early Christmas wish list. First, I wish for a mild winter followed by a beautiful spring and better weather for fishing next summer in 2015. Second, that you all can experience a great day on the water and make some great memories with a nice stripe bass dinner to boot. Third, May the weather be beautiful the day you have to pull your boat for the end of season and the final cleaning. Finally may the holidays be special and shared by all with family and friends and great Christmas cheer. May we all enjoy the benefits of living in the greatest country in the world. In regards to memories I lost my best friend and fishing buddy of forty some years this fall. Although his passing has been difficult, the years of memories will always keep him alive. They will bring a smile as I relive the friendship, the laughs, the little black book, and the many great experiences we shared over the years. God Speed Billy.

The Henfey family at Hereford’s Tree lighting
Like so many others, I was extremely saddened when I heard the news of Bill Henfey’s passing on October 21st. He fought the cancer bravely and without complaint for over a year. Bill was my boss during many of my years running the Parks Department but more importantly, he was my friend. He was someone I respected greatly in both of these categories. With my knowledge of the town’s history, I can say without hesitation that Bill will go down as one of North Wildwood’s hardest working, well liked and successful mayors. Despite his great success and popularity as mayor, his career as policeman, County Bridge Commissioner, Councilman and his volunteer efforts in many different fraternal organizations, I think Bill considered himself first and foremost a boats captain. Even his home listing in the phone book reads “Captain Bill Henfey”. This personal connection with the sea, I think, helps explain his strong love and support of Hereford Inlet Lighthouse. He worked closely with me and my fellow board members on issues regarding the Lighthouse, and several wise decisions he made helped to protect and ensure the Landmark’s continued upkeep and operation for many years to come. The one goal he had before he retired was the acquisition of the 1938 Coast Guard Station (State Marine Police Building) to restore as a Maritime History Museum. He didn’t live to see this happen, but eventually it will, and I’m sure he will be smiling up there. Despite all the big events in the Wildwoods in the course of a year, Bill once surprised me by saying that his favorite event was the annual Lighthouse tree lighting ceremony. As a token of our appreciation for all of Bill’s help with Hereford, in 2012 we presented him with our highest honor, the Freeling Hewitt Award. Two years later at his retirement party, we appointed him “Lifetime Assistant Keeper”. Along with the title, I presented him with an 1890’s Light Keeper’s cap and one of our spare 1,000 watt lighthouse bulbs. I think there were two qualities of Bill that helped with his popularity and success. First, he was real. What you saw was what you got. A down to earth, approachable, every day kind of guy, always with a quick smile. No big ego or pretentiousness, despite being such an intelligent and accomplished man. The other was this – something very rare in an elected official. When he had to make a decision, he didn’t check to see which way the political wind was blowing. He just did what he thought was right for the town he loved. We will miss you Captain Bill.
It’s the hap-happiest season of all!

t last the dinner was all done, the cloth was cleared, the hearth swept, and the fire made up. The compound in the jug being tasted, and considered perfect, apples and oranges were put upon the table, and a shovel-full of chestnuts on the fire. Then all the Cratchit family drew round the hearth, in what Bob Cratchit called a circle, meaning half a one; and at Bob Cratchit’s elbow stood the family display of glass. Two tumblers, and a custard-cup without a handle. These held the hot stuff from the jug, however, as well as golden goblets would have done; and Bob served it out with beaming looks, while the chestnuts on the fire sputtered and cracked noisily. Then Bob proposed: ‘A Merry Christmas to us all, my dears. God bless us!’ Which all the family re-echoed. ‘God bless us every one!’ said Tiny Tim, the last of all. ~Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol, 1843
