from the editor
{an endless ocean city summer}
Summer! Come Back! Just when you’ve finally got the beach routine down, it’s time to say goodbye to the summer again. . . “I miss you already.” In June, summer announces its approach quietly, gently, moving limey green and sweetly into its place on our calendars. We realize, “You’re right on time!” We’ve put aside the children’s school bags and heavy schedules to attend to our beach bags. We make sure our favorite Ocean City paper is in there!!, and all of the reading material we didn’t have time for in the spring... and of course a tide chart and a puzzle book and quarters for the parking meters and the ice cream man... “Get your fudgy wudgy here!” New clotheslines are hung up on the old rusty poles because summer is simple and we have the time to hang out our laundry to dry. Windows are pried open to let summer back in the musty beach house. “We’re ready!” And so are the dogs. They’ve returned to their shady spot on the awninged porch, taking glances through the railing, always ready to welcome you back home from the beach. Whether a hundred years ago or this day, summer at the shore is timeless. As you spent the days sitting endlessly watching the sunlight dance upon the ebbing and flowing sea, laughing lightheartedly with friends and family, smiling at your children playing in the ocean and digging your toes in the sand, summer was its familiar and islandy self, as it has always been. But then comes the day out of nowhere like an approaching thunderstorm when we turn on our TV set and “What? A back-to-school commercial already?” Now, the calendar says it’s mid-August... We go to the front door and “change” is standing there knocking. It looks like an unwelcome guest. The first school bell of the year is about to ring as Indian summer responds with a warm smile, “I’m here!” But wait. . . “I’m not ready!” When you’re a beach lover with sea and sand in your soul and you live for low tides and shelling and abundantly sun-shiney days, and you haven’t even made a dent in all of that beach reading material you tucked in your bag, you take one look at the calendar and with your finger count the number of days left and you’re pleasantly reminded of the coming months of September and October, and sigh. . . “Change is good.” Labor Day might signify the traditional farewell to summer, but on the island we know differently. Indian summer is a splendid time of year. The days are still long enough for after-school beach trips. They are glorious and sunny with ocean temps that match the air. They’re sublime and tranquil, unveiling themselves in pink and orange sunrises and sunsets across the bay and sea. They are serene as a day trip on the calm blue sea or a bicycle ride from one end of the island to the other. They’re so lovely! and most of all, a glorious gift from God. In America’s Greatest Family Resort, summer never ends. Wishing you an endless summer breeze... Time to get in touch with your inner beach bum!

Our Father we implore you, please stand by our side, our nation is angry immense is her pride. Many times she was threatened but never backed down, not once did her enemies see her wearing a frown. In the past they attacked her Harbor of Pearls, they were mistaken by thinking she was a weak little girl. She shut up their boasting with a great Mighty Bang, it’s for peace we are fighting, with salvation she sang. Many thousands of lives in the past have been lost, for her freedom and peace they paid the ultimate cost. Once again, on a Tuesday the Wolf growled at DC and took a bite of the Apple and tried bending her knee. She said, this is war and for freedom I live, for one measure of terror one thousand I give. ILLER
The calmness of the morning’s sunrise is like the soothing beach’s serenity. On hot, humid days, the sea breeze quenches the thirst of the sweaty sunbathers. Luscious green palm trees are our haven from the blistering sun and the lethal heat. On a windy day, the sand is like a little squirrel scurrying across the field, and the palm trees are careless birds floating in the gusty breeze. Its ocean is an expansive pool, which never seems to end, until it reaches the never-ending horizon. The sun’s vibrant reflection on the water looks like newly purchased diamonds sparkling brightly. In the summertime, the gray and white seagulls are like famished vultures hunting for prey. The beach is a huge sandbox exploding with unruly people. As the beach’s invaders go for a stroll, the shells viciously bite their unsuspecting feet. The beachgoer’s blue, orange, purple, green, yellow, and red umbrellas cover the entire land surface of the beach, making it appear to be an expansive rainbow. Surfer’s scan the water for waves to catch, paddling with all of their energy, and it seems like they are on top of the world when they stand up on the longboard. The beach’s lighthouse makes the tired sailors feel out of harm’s way harm, knowing they are nearing their peaceful sanctuary. ctober th pm The beach is a place where the people rest, relax, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the memorable coastline. Ocean City’s Dog Mascot
He was once a stray that wandered our beloved beach town before there was traffic laws and dog regulations. Hobo became the city’s mascot during the 1920’s, wandering through town and making daily routine stops at places like Shriver’s on the boardwalk for an evening dish of ice cream. He was midsized white and brown spotted pup that was rescued from a snow drift under the boardwalk in 1920. Throughout the decade, Hobo became well known and loved in Ocean City, taken in by the island community as the dog of the town. He napped on boardwalk benches, shared snacks with beach goers, sprawled out on blankets and played with children in back yards, playgrounds and schools. Hobo was even fed by the likes of Jack Kelly, father of Princess Grace Kelly, who summered in Ocean City. In 1936, when Hobo finally passed on to Dog Heaven, the whole island felt a loss, for he was their dog, everyone having their own fun memories of him. Hobo is not forgotten, he’s an Ocean City legend that lives on through these dog days of summer and is honored again by The Ocean City SUN.
Deuces partner Officer John Vogt and his family gathered with many others who paid tribute to a local hero.

Deuces was also an ambassador for the animal residents at the Humane Society of Ocean City.
The memorial, located outside of the Ocean City Free Public Library reads: In Memory of Hobo, Ocean City’s Beloved Mascot, died Dec. 8, 1936, aged 18 to 19 years.

I read in The Sun that you like nostalgic stories. My memories of Ocean City go back to my childhood. I don’t remember the first time I went to Ocean City or how old I was, but I do remember going to my grandmother’s house in Philadelphia and the two of us going by train to Ocean City. We stayed at The Lincoln Hotel and that was wonderful because there was an indoor playground. Our family (mom, dad, brother, sister and I) spent many summer vacations in Ocean City. Some places we frequented on the boardwalk remain, others do not. I remember eating at Simm’s (with the white tablecloths, ceiling fans and fish of different varieties mounted and hanging on the wall.) Litterer’s fresh squeezed orange juice, taffy being made at Shrivers, Mintzer’s Mints, Copper KettleFudge, Gillians Fun Deck, Kohr’s Frozen Custard (you had to lick that fast or it would be running down your arm) The Sting Ray now the Beach Club Hotel and Mary Hoyer Doll Shop. One summer when I was eight years old my parents rented an apartment on Plymouth Place. I remember we ate at The Sindia. I met a girl my age that summer in Ocean City. Her name was Marcia and her family was also staying on Plymouth Place. Marcia and I became penpals and our friendship continued. The photo above is from 1958 of (left to right) my brother Curt, Marcia, me and my sister Carol. Carol and I are holding our new Mary Hoyer Dolls. The recent photo below is of Carol and I holding our new Mary Hoyer dolls that survived all these years. ~ Beth (Hunter) Brendlinger

A cynical lawyer (Robert Downey Jr.) returns home for his mother’s funeral then must defend his distant father, who happens to be THE JUDGE (Robert Duvall, opens Oct. 10th) accused of murder. Ultimately, he finds himself reconnecting with his at-odds relatives during the familyfriendly Indian Summer Weekend. SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER INDIAN SUMMER 2014
“The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul.” – Wyland
Ocean City, New Jersey
The Land of Magic by Leanna M. Kucinski, age 15 To some, this little island by the Jersey shore is just some town. And while they’re correct about it being a small town, it’s so much more than that. To hundreds of families that are scattered across the globe, this place is magic. It holds so many memories; happy ones, sad ones, plain old beautiful ones. The sunrises, the sunsets, the blazing hot sand, the open and blue skies, these scenes are all found in the minds of children and adults alike when they think fondly of Ocean City. Growing up, summer was Ocean City. My family went almost every year and the years we didn’t go somehow just didn’t feel quite right. It was like something was missing. We would go to other beaches and other towns but the magic was never quite as strong. I can’t really pinpoint one reason why this tiny island is so special. Everyone that has vacationed there has their favorite place. My dad loves the beach, my sister adores the boardwalk, and my cousins fawn over the town square. I love the whole island but I have to admit that I am partial to “Brown’s donuts.” However, any of these places could be found in other towns. There are hundreds of registered beaches in the United States; there is even another Ocean City in Maryland. So I again ask, why this place? What is so special about it? There aren’t really words to describe how the place makes me feel… it’s almost as if with every breath, you can feel the past. Simply glance ahead and you can sense the history held. The heartbreak, the love, and the laughs, are felt in your very soul with every step. My father has been going since his youth; he practically grew up with Ocean City, as did his family. childhood to adulthood, my family continues making the choice to pass down the vacation place, and I think it’s because they too understand the importance. It may be unspoken, but every member of my extended family recognizes the love we share for this place. Even if it’s a love that can’t be explained, it is a strong love just the same. It’s my happy place. It’s my magical place.
The Kucinski family in Ocean City, c. Summer of 1999 (The baby is Leanna)
This past July, we drove down to Ocean City. The anticipation was in the air. The countdown was on. Even the car ride there was exciting because we all knew where the road was leading us. The not so far off destination has the power to make any -and all of us -smile from the inside out; and it is just within our reach. It is so far and yet so close. Ocean City holds the key to hopes and dreams. It unlocks a mysterious and wonderful happiness that gets in your head and swirls around in your heart. The very name makes me smile. It lights up memories in the deepest corners of my mind that were the most important in my growing up. I became the person that I am right now with the aid of the time spent in Ocean City. I can sense that my time there has only just begun and I look forward to feeling the magic again next summer. I can’t wait to grow up even more, to maybe become a better person, to relax and kick back. I can’t wait to make memories, to hear laughter, and to feel overwhelming love and heartbreak at the sight of a single place. I always look forward to being on that little island along the Jersey shore.

“The only way of catching a train I ever discovered is to miss the train before.”
Steam Boats & Trolley Times By Ed Murch
Before the trolleys, steamboats transported visitors to Ocean City from Somers Pt.
Shore Fast Line trolleys entered into Ocean City on 8th St., crossing the Egg Harbor River from Somers Pt. on a two mile trestle.
Ocean City Trolley
O
cean City used to be accessible via steamboat from the last two decades of the nineteenth century until the trolleys and railroad lines made them obsolete. It seems that boat service from Somers Point came first, when the Ocean City Association purchased a steamer for the town in 1880. A line from Longport to Ocean City came into use four years later. Both used a municipal pier along the bay between 1st and 2nd streets (near where the Yacht Club is today). That wharf was improved in 1903 and trolley lines were extended from it along Atlantic, Wesley and Central Avenues beginning in 1907. At least some of those trolley tracks eventually went all the way to the south of the island (59th Street). One of the steamers was named “The Ocean City”, another “The Longport” and another “The Somers Point.” They evidently ceased operation after WWI. Presumably, in addition to foot passengers the boats carried some light cargo. Steamboats came into extensive use during the Civil War, including so-called gunboats – which had artillery pieces mounted onto their decks. As wars do, the technology developed then came into civilian use afterwards also. While I was in New Zealand in the 1990s I had the opportunity to take a cruise around Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown aboard the venerable old T.S.S. Earnslaw, built in 1912. It is a double-decked, twin-screwed, coalfired vessel that is far more elaborate than the Ocean City fleet. Any readers traveling to New Zealand ought not to miss this experience. The Ocean City Historical Museum features pictures of the old steamboat fleet. It is evident that the boats were single-decked, carried about 50 passengers, and were powered by single

steam engines. Some of the pictures also show the pier as it appeared at different times. At first it was simply an open platform; then at some point a roof was built over it; and finally it became double-decked with lots of benches. There is no evidence of any remains there now. During WWII I spent one summer living with my grandfather in Chelsea, which is the first neighborhood south of Atlantic City proper. His home was right on the bay and a nine-year-old like me was fascinated by the view of the water and wetlands from his screened-in porch. Of course, we also spent a lot of time “walking the boards” and taking in Steel Pier and the many other board-
walk attractions. I also got to ride in the jitneys and the streamlined trolley cars (“Brilliners”) which ran along Atlantic Avenue. I had no idea just how long those trolley tracks had been in use, nor that they traveled far beyond Atlantic City. I found Mervin E. Borgnis’ 1979 book, “We Had A Shore Fast Line” to be a great source of information on this topic. The Shore Fast Line (SFL) operated between Atlantic City and Ocean City from 1906 through 1948. It seems that the route encompassed Pleasantville, Northfield, Linwood, Bellhaven, Ocean Heights and Somers Point, where a rickety old one-tracked wooden trestle crossed the bay into Ocean City. “Old-

timers” speak of being scared to death as the cars swayed wildly in the wind on the trestle. Anyone unlucky enough to have been standing hanging onto one of the hanging straps was likely sorry to have made the trip. Touching down on 8th Street, a block west of Bay Avenue, the tracks extended along 8th to a terminal adjacent to the boardwalk. As the fascinating old black and white photos in Borgnis’ book will attest, those trolleys were anything but streamlined “Brilliners.” Depending on the day of the week, the season and time of day either single or double cars were used. Each one accompanied 52 sitting passengers and as many as 17 standing. The total distance between the AC terminal at Virginia Avenue and the boardwalk and the OC terminal was 16.4 miles. Powered by four 60hp electric motors the cars were capable of the then lightning speed of about 35 mph, but the motormen were cautioned not to go that fast for several seasons, not least being all the grade crossings along the way. The schedule called for departures every half hour. This writer suspects that there were far more tourist passengers interested in going to AC from OC than the other way around – a principal reason being not only the far greater boardwalk attractions at the time but also the fact that OC was a dry town. Borgnis tells of the conductors having to put up with many tipsy riders coming out of AC in the evening on weekends. There were even uniformed hostesses (like modern day stewardesses) on the line on weekends. The trolleys seem not to have received a great deal of preventive maintenance and many were just scrapped in the trolley barn for use as spare parts when they broke down. Several trolley lines ran along north/ south streets (including Wesley Avenue) in OC. Periodic flooding of the town during hurricanes and high tides undoubtedly interfered with this service. Service to Somers Point began in late August, 1906 and was extended to Bay Avenue in OC on July 1 of the following year and then to the OC boardwalk in April of 1908. There were moveable bridges on the causeway at the main ship channel, adjacent to Somers Point, and at what was known as Little Finger Thorofare near OC. A fire on the rotting old wooden trestle over the bay on September 11, 1946 ended service to OC for good. The entire SFL went out of business in January of 1948 (by which time much quieter and smootherriding rubber tired buses had rendered the trolleys obsolete).

Doctor Gary Raab’s other office on the water
by George Ingram gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
Dr. Gary Raab The first time I entered his Ocean City waiting room, it felt good. High on a wall facing the door was a huge blue marlin. A small plaque beneath it read: “Caught by Dr. Gary Raab Aboard Fishaholic 8-24-96.” Eureka! I knew he was one of the most respected family-practice physicians in the region. (My neighbor, Dr. Christine Anderson, describes him as a “very smart and dedicated man who has a wonderful therapeutic relationship with his patients.”) But I’d also discovered someone who spoke my piscine language. From now on, my doctor visits would focus not only on results of the latest blood work but also on the best bloodworms. And on fish tales, like the saga of that blue marlin. “I was fishing on my friend
Dr. Joe Zerbo’s boat,” Dr. Raab told me recently at the end of another long day of seeing his many patients. He was attired in a white lab coat, his necktie still neatly tied under the collar. “We were about 80 miles off shore, somewhere near the Wilmington Canyon, and I was trolling with a big Spanish mackerel when it hit,” he said. The battle to bring the monster to the boat took about an hour and 20 minutes. When it was close enough, friends measured the fish from the corner of its mouth to its tail and gauged the girth and length of its bill. Then the pelagic blue and gray beauty with an estimated weight of almost 400 pounds was released to swim away. “Unfortunately, the guy who was supposed to take photographs of it got seasick,” Dr. Raab recalled with a rueful smile. So, that’s not the actual fish up there on his waiting room wall. Its vital statistics were dispatched to Gray Taxidermy in Pompano Beach, Florida, which fashioned an ewco-friendly fiberglass replica. A sandy-haired and healthy-looking 55, Gary Raab has been pursuing fish since
he was at least 6 or 7 years old. “When I was in grade school I fished the surf with my grandfather. I would go out by myself when I was a little older, and I fished a lot on my father’s boat.” He remembers when his dad had a boat with a wooden hull. “Sometime in early October, it would start to leak,” he said. “Dad would put me in the water with a rope and I’d have to take big blocks of tar and stick it into the seams so we could keep fishing until late October without it leaking so badly.” Aside from that big marlin, the Fishing Doctor’s largest catch was a 34-pound striped bass. Yet there’s a slightly smaller striper he’s especially proud of--a feisty 32-pounder he caught “by accident” on 8-pound test line and a quarter-ounce jig. That was like performing an appendectomy with a pen knife. You’ve seen the bumper sticker proclaiming “the worst day of fishing is better than the best day at work.” But Dr. Raab’s worst day on the water might give a shudder to any angler. “It happened when I was fishing with my brother,” he related. “He caught a giant
bluefin tuna. It finally charged the boat and the line got between the prop and the keel. We got the prop up but the line was frayed and we lost it. He was upset, and so was I.” For the dinner table, his preference is mahi mahi and striped bass. “I’m also getting back into fishing for tog. I used to do a lot of it off the rock piles when I was a kid. Now I just started doing it again and it’s really good steamed.” With the approach of autumn, Dr. Raab hopes to be fishing for striped bass at least two days a week, between October and Christmas. “I have a network of friends who update me every day on what’s happening with stripers. During the peak of the fall season I look forward to getting out there.” One of Gary Raab’s primary missions in life is, of course, keeping his patients alive and well. On the level of personal enjoyment, however, only one thing is more important than fishing. The doc, you see, is also a surfer dude. “I go out just about every morning I can,” he said. “That’s my top priority.”

It was the day she had long awaited. Her white gown shimmered in the setting sun as the cold ocean breeze swept through her hair. There was no place else she’d rather be, standing there like a maiden of the sea, watching the dark green Atlantic waves roll and splash with salty foam against the solid sand. Black clouds formed on the western horizon and headed out to sea as the sun continued to vanish. The wind became bitter and the gulls flew every which way. It was October 31st and two souls were about to become one. The young woman whose name was Emily stepped inside the grand archway of The Flanders Hotel. A fog was quickly settling over Ocean City leaving a drifting mist across the beaches and vacant boardwalk. The winds howl intensified and rattled the windows of the elegant hotel. Emily glided gently up the spiral staircase and peered into the mirror, the very mirror where she first caught the gaze of her soon to be husband, the young writer from Philadelphia. He had entered his third year as a journalist for The Atlantic City Daily Press and had met Emily on his first assignment covering the grand opening of The Flanders in 1923. After WWI, she had found her way from Antwerp to New York City and then to Ocean City where she was employed as a housekeeper at America’s newest and most beautiful coastal hotel. It was only fitting that the two beach lovers would marry in the very building they had first met. There on the wall next to the grand piano was a framed poem by Lieutenant John McCrae entitled “In Flanders Fields.” Strangely, the hotel itself was named after the horrific battle in Belgium where Emily’s father and brother had
lost their lives. Emily read and re-read the poem... “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow... Between the crosses, row on row…” She fought back tears but knew it was no coincidence she had ended up where she was. It was as if her father and brother were looking out for her when she immigrated to America, finding steady employment in a beautiful beach town and meeting a wonderful man who loved her deeply. That terrifying field in her home country had been transformed into a holy temple on the other side of that great expanse of Atlantic. She continued to read... “We are the dead. Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunsets glow, loved, and were loved, and now we lie in Flanders Fields.” A sudden flash illuminated the hallway followed by a massive crackle and boom that shook the building. Outside, the black clouds unleashed a downpour and the last bit of sunlight was swallowed by the earth. Emily looked once more into the mirror. Her porcelain face and black hair was hauntingly beautiful. This was her special night and she wanted it to last forever. As the guests arrived, Emily wandered about the basement catacombs. As if in a daze, she followed whispers through the dark labyrinth of tunnels while the electricity flickered and the coastal storm gained strength. Although she was happy, Emily wished her father would be there to walk her down the aisle. He would always bring her the most beautiful flowers as a young girl. A flicker of lustrous white appeared in the darkness. Emily turned to chase it but it was gone. When she looked down she was standing in a small pile of poppy flowers. It was then that she remembered the last line of the poem: “We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields.”

Hazel Earl Newkirk Ocean City Chief of Police, circa 1900 We ADORE your magazine! My family has a long history in Ocean City. Our great grandfather Hazel Earl Newkirk was OC Chief of Police in the early 1900’s. He owned a toy store on the boardwalk and he and my grandmother raised my mother and her brother in a house on the 700 block of Wesley Avenue where it still stands! As children, they loved their beach town, enjoying the lively atmosphere of the summer, but also relishing the autumn when all the renters and “shoobies” went home, and they had their island back to themselves! My grandparents moved the family to Philadelphia during the depression in order to find work. It was there that my mother met my father, a Philadelphia native. They fell in love, married and raised a family, introducing my sister and I to the joys of Ocean City. We have had many a happy time here! Our parents are gone now, but my sister and our families are yet another generation of OC lovers, basking in our favorite beach town. It is our home away from home…and always will be! ~ Pamela Daskus

mportant encounters are planned by the souls long before the bodies see each other. Some of these situations are just so peculiar that they seem as if the universe fights for them to be together. Laurie sat across from Rick at Ove’s Restaurant just as it was about to close. She had her hand on top of his, star-struck and smitten. Mr. Ove walked over to the two and placed his own hand on top of theirs. “This looks like the beginning of a special relationship,” he said. “We’re closing the restaurant now, but you two are welcome to go sit upstairs.” And so they did, for two or three hours chatting while peering out at the mighty waves of the Atlantic Ocean. It was the summer of 1996. “Laurie, can you take a few days off from work?” said Rick, “I think I would really like to get to know you.” And so Monday morning came and Laurie called her boss who was also a good friend. “You’re not going to believe this,” she said, “But I met someone here in Ocean City and I think I would like to just hang here with him for the next couple of days.” Their weekend of hanging out lasted for years as their special relationship blossomed into a beautiful marriage. Rick and Laurie Derr met at the Crab Trap restaurant in Somers Point while visiting the area from their homes in Pennsylvania. At the time, Laurie was staying at her girl friends house on Wovern Place, just two doors down from the tiny bay side cottage that would one day become the home of her and her future husband Rick she would meet that weekend. “We were the last of the generation that could spread out in the grass and make animals out of the clouds,” Laurie said, reminiscing about the old days of romantic innocence and excitement. “Today, unfor-
tunately everything has to be a guarantee with no margin for mistakes; calculating perfection.” It was the subtleties and happenstance that opened the door for Laurie and Rick to cross paths that bright summer. The artistic minded couple moved to Harrisburg and even lived together in an old church turned house in the Pennsylvania countryside. But it was Ocean City; the place where they met that drew them back over and over. In 1997 the two purchased their home on Doll House Row and have now become full time islanders, opting for a simpler life by the sea. To them, there’s something incredibly peaceful and reverent about the island where they met and especially their humble neighborhood on the Back Bay. In the summers their tiny home was packed with at least eight to ten people with Rick “The Grill Master” cooking up delicious foods on the barbeque. For these two beach lovers, Ocean City is perfection in all seasons. “The ocean is just as beautiful in the winter” said Rick. In the dead of January they find magnificently huge shells at Corson’s Inlet and ride bikes on the vacant boardwalk. They have never lived somewhere where they both have felt such a deep, intimate connection. “It’s where we truly feel like we belong,” said Laurie, “And it’s just such a nice place to live. There’s something about being able to live in a wholesome community that’s so connected and surrounded by people who care for one another.” For the Derr’s, their special relationship with each other and their island has brought about abundant joy, eternal blessings and rich memories that will last a lifetime. Some things are just too strange and strong to be coincidences.

In late August 1964, many people were driving over the Longport Bridge to Atlantic City to attend the Democratic National Convention or to see the Beatles. The Democrats gave the party’s nomination to Lyndon B. Johnson and the Beatles sang “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”
The 1964 vacation guide featured the beach front, the bay front and the world famous boardwalk. The Moorlyn Theatre was one of four boardwalk theatres. The others were: the Strand, the Village, and the Surf.
When the Drifters’ recording of “Under the Boardwalk” hit number four on the billboard charts during the summer of 1964, everyone in Ocean City thought the song had been written for them. Editor Note: And Wildwood thought it was written for them!

Ocean City, New Jersey, was founded as a “Christian seaside resort” in 1879. Soon thereafter, it became a vibrant year-round community and a highly desirable summer retreat. Hotels were integral to the city’s success. The most famous of these was the Flanders Hotel, which opened to much fanfare in 1923. It was built in the Spanish Mission Revival style and named after Belgium’s Flanders Field; today, it is in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to stately hotels, many smaller hotels and guesthouses, like Jernee Manor, the Castle Inn, the Brighton Hotel, the Biscayne, the Bellevue, Locksley Hall, and the Scarborough Inn, began to emerge as well. Ocean City’s Historic Hotels features the rich architectural and recreational history of this New Jersey coastal town and its many hotels. Fred and Susan Miller have written six Arcadia books on Ocean City. Fred has been writing about and collecting images of Ocean City since he came here as a summer lifeguard 50 years ago. While most of the images in this book are from the Millers’ collection, some have been loaned by friends as well as the Ocean City Historical Museum, where Fred is a past president.

MORE THAN FOOTPRINTS
Meditations for the Beach by Peaches Lukens
“The heavens are Yours and also the Earth; You founded the world and all that is in it.” ~Psalm 89:11
No where else can we see the handiwork of God’s creative mind nor witness the evidence of His desire to found a new world than the 360 degrees encircling us while on a beach. Meditate on these wonders when you walk, swim and sit on your favorite beach. The Sun rises, bringing with it a new day. “Day”. The first thing God gave a name to. Earth was birthed on that “first day” where Time began to tick-out in minuscule increments of “day and night”. One day. Many days spanning years. Decades. Centuries. What “day” is it in the long stream of history you find yourself in as you read this? And what better place to see the enormity of “Sky” and that arching, dome-like bubble God encapsulated us in, than on the beach. As the weather patterns circumnavigate the planet, they pass in front of us in the form of clouds, storms, breezes, wind and rain in their circular journey round the troposphere. The night-time sky on the beach brings a stark image of where we are in deep space. The only known planet thus far with such complexity of life, we cannot even grasp a smidgen of it all, in a lifetime. Peering into the dark universal expanse through the window of our transparent atmosphere, it is clear... we’re IT. Watch the weather forming in the sky above you on the beach. Watch it move. Contemplate the ozone, oxygen and atmospheric bubble you sit under. The air you breath in and out continually. Sit on the beach at night and take in the reality of the universe beyond that is clearly visible this time of day. Ahh the “Sea” you sit before. This massive body of water that covers most of Earth’s surface, once engulfed the whole planet until God drew those very waters back like an enormous bed-sheet into deep pools, exposing “Land” beneath it. Think about how Earth was once covered completely with water, even the very spot you sit and imagine no life stirring beneath the seas surface. Consider the hidden seafloor; mountains, valleys and plains below. Land laid bare and ready to receive, God spread seeds from His hand taken up by the winds and transported by animals and water to begin the endless cycle of seed-bearing
plants we still eat from today. The seeds of dune grass, bayberry, goldenrod and beach plum that dot the rolling hills of sand behind you, while this island was once filled with Pine, Holly and Cedars. Flowers, vines, grasses, moss and meadow; prolific vegetation of the most wild kind expanding over the surface of Land. Consider what you ate the day before and the seeds that produced your meals. Meditate upon the landscapes of America and other continents in all their diversity. Consider yourself once a tiny seed within your mother’s womb. God being Light Himself will come and go from Earth, but he constructs gargantuan luminaries suspended in space to give perpetual light to Earth. God launches our orbit around the Sun into motion. Who can hide from its heat and scorch. While the silvery moon mirrors a bit of Sun’s reflection through the night as both Great Lights oversee our day into night and the revolution of seasons. And oh the stars! Scattered like iridescent sand particles across a cavernous black canvas twinkle and blink in patterns and swirls too many. Who could count. Close your eyes and feel the Sun on you. Consider Earth moving around the Sun at 67,000 miles per hour as you sit in quiet contemplation. What season are you in? Meditate upon the tides coming up and down and how the moon dictates this procession every single day like clockwork. Creatures, creatures, everywhere. Shaped and molded of earth Itself. Hearts beating. Lungs breathing. Filling the sea you stand before and sky above, then dispersed across the Land behind you. Multiplying. Wild and domestic. Animal tribes to live with and among. Scan your surroundings and consider the creatures you can see and not see. Those that roam near and far and how you live with them in and outside your home. Those you eat and those you love. And you, Human-being. Sculpted and fashioned to look like God with hands and feet, voice and feelings. A mind that thinks and a soul that connects with this God and Father of all the Earth and beyond. Creative and industrious like Him, what have you imagined that came to be? If there are people nearby you on the beach, study them. Think about those people you love and live with. Consider all the peoples of Earth and their various cultures, beliefs and landscapes across the sea before you. Now take a good rest. No more thinking for now. Let God run the Universe and trust Him with it. Close your eyes and breath softly. Is there any sweeter nap or sleep than at the beach? Even God snoozes. He is surely blessed by your thoughts towards Him.

THE SHIP LOVERS’ DIGEST
ROBIN WILLIAMS, THE ETERNAL STAR
FIRST PUBLISHED IN 1940
“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.”
Ship: SS Atlantus Date: June 8, 1926 Properties: 259 feet Captain: Colonel Jesse Rosenfeld Origin: Cape May, NJ Destination: Cape May, NJ Fate: Ran aground during a storm at Sunset Beach, Cape May, NJ Report: One of twelve concrete ships built by the Liberty Ship Building Company in Brunswick, Georgia, the SS Atlantus was launched on December 5, 1918. The second concrete ship constructed in the World War I Emergency Fleet, the Atlantus was used to transport American troops back home from Europe as well as coal in New England. After just two years of service, the Atlantus was retired and sent to a salvage yard in Virginia. Six years later, Colonel Jesse Rosenfeld bought the ship for use in making a ferry dock out of the Atlantus and two of her sister ships. His plan was to dig a channel into the beach where the Atlantus would be set with the other two ships placed in a Y formation to create a slip for a ferry to dock. After repairs were made to her in Virginia, the ship was towed to Cape May. On June 8th, 1926 a storm shook the SS Atlantus, breaking her free of her moorings where she ran aground some 150 feet off the coast of beautiful Sunset Beach, Cape May where the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay come together. Despite several salvage attempts, the SS Atlantus had plans to become famous and on display, making her home partially beneath the waters of Cape May, becoming a major tourist attraction to this day. Since 1926, she has been seen by millions. Many have swam out to her, diving off her remains but today she is split apart in the midsection. The ocean has battered the ship over the years but she still gasps for breath, sticking up above the surface until the last wave sweeps her under. Robin Williams, 1951-2014
It is small comfort to know that the words and larger-than-life ideas of Robin Williams, who died tragically on August 11th, will live on, taking on a more poignant meaning as his legion of fans struggle to comprehend the tragedy hidden behind so much comedy. From imaginative alien to Academy Award winner, he generously gave a part of his soul
in each story he told, and we, his audience, never wanted that story to end. The horror of his passing does not diminish his countless contributions to humanity, which along with his inexhaustible hilarity and heartfelt performances made him a beloved star. Victor Hugo once said, “There is room in the heart for all the affections, as there is room in heaven for all the stars.” Now, his four completed wide-ranging films expected to be released posthumously, “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb”, “Merry Friggin Christmas,” “Boulevard” and “Absolutely Anything,” are his last loving bequest to us and a bittersweet reminder of the tender soul who became an eternal star. This is 11 year old Jack Hooper, Ocean City summer resident, having fun on the water. Jack put together a book of poems last year for his 5th grade class. By reading these featured poems, we can clearly see that Jack draws his inspiration from his summers spent at the shore. Nice work Jack!
