the SUN by-the-Sea

“But friendship is precious, not only in the shade, but in the Sunshine of life!” ~Thomas Jefferson

from the editor “There’s an analog for this life, where the succession of events, spread across years, and come together to reveal the path forward. It goes by a nicer name though, serendipity.” {Robert Lang} When I first set out to begin my own paper, before I ever knew its name, some things were clear in my vision for it. It would be a collection of all things Wildwood, and “Wildwood” would always be ended with the nostalgic “by-the-sea”. It would absolutely be a “people paper”, with stories written by and about the people here, and it would contain extra-large amounts of their pictures throughout it. From a practical standpoint, it would be my new job, as I was in need of one at the time. Never would I have imagined that The Sun by-the-sea would create its own stories, and become a “giant hug” as one reader described it to me. It was pure serendipity in that both the readers and I all found in The Sun something none of us were expecting to find. An entire issue could be devoted to such wonderful stories that would have never been told, if not for this paper. The stories are endless. I’ve been told that it has brought healing to broken relationships, that old friends have found old friends, and some have discovered friends and family they weren’t aware of. The Sun introduced me to friends that have become like family; they are the advertisers who faithfully support the paper, the writers and contributors who have found a platform to share their writing talents and their passionate stories about Wildwood by-the-sea, and its readers who are made up of locals and summer visitors; an audience of Wildwood admirers that continues to stretch far and wide, digging out their old photos to submit to me with their memories. (And since this is a special edition ‘2-in-1 SUN’, this all applies to The Ocean City Sun, now in its 3rd epic year!) Some of my new friends who are most near and dear to my heart are the Dr. Mace babies. Like old souls, we gather together each summer at Hereford Lighthouse, to honor a woman who undoubtedly is one of the most prominent figures in all of Wildwood history~ Dr. Margaret Mace, who delivered over 6,000 babies from 1907 to 1950, and is known for her benevolent heart. More recently, the Long’s Maternity babies joined us at our reunion, as well as those born at home. They are my friends now, too. Some of my new friends make it a point to take me out to eat while they are here on vacation. Another friend, Jean, began a new tradition a few years ago to meet me during her summer vacation on the boardwalk at 11am for the national anthem and to hear Kate Smith sing God Bless America. Many email me, some call, and others send me handwritten notes in the mail. My PA biker friends Karen & Claude like to meet me for ice cream, and my new friends Gerry & Gerri had me over to their new Wildwood beach house for lunch. Before I finish, I must tell you of one person whom I have had the privilege to work closely with, bouncing ideas back and forth with, and creating our unique retro cover photos together with. I’ve witnessed him take hold of his God-given talents and find pleasure in using them. He grew up in the light of The Sun, he is my most favorite person in the world and he is my son, who is also my friend. Today, he is working harder than ever to forge his own path in NYC with his art/photography career. I feel blessed beyond words to be able to say I love my job. Thank you all for following The Sun and continuing to encourage me with the wind under my wings that keeps me going through all of my deadlines. With love from your friend by-the-sea, “What you are is God’s gift to you. What you make of yourself is your gift to God.” ~my motto

Saturday, June 14, 2014 DOG BEACH DAYS Here in Wildwood bythe-sea, families of all kinds are always welcomed, especially those that include our furriest of friends. Just in time for the Summer of 2014, an ordinance was unanimously approved for the new Wildwood Dog Beach, located at Poplar Avenue, further proof that every dog has his beach day! On August 15, 2014, Every dog had its day at Wildwoods Dog Beach when a 25 ft. tall, fireengine red hydrant art sculpture was unveiled. An ode to man’s best friend, the art piece was a gift to the city from Morey’s Piers in celebration of the Wildwoods’ first-ever, dogfriendly beach. Here’s to those Dog Days of Summer!

Radiance

For most of us here in the Wildwoods, it was a typi-

cal mid-May Saturday. Under gorgeous sunny skies, you probably ate breakfast at your favorite local diner, walked the seawall and continued to get your summer homes up and running for the season. Yet for one awesome group of children and their families, it was actually quite the busy day. It started at noon with a gathering on the boardwalk in front of the Wildwood Convention Center, complete with everything from face painting to Watch the tramcar please!! (and some cool tiger striped glasses i couldn’t seem to get my hands on)... all in preparation for the Wild Child Half Mile. At 2pm sharp, the kids all gathered together at the starting line anxious to take off down the boards. When the PA announcer yelled “GO!” -and off they went, like a bunch of little wild animals. Weaving in and out of traffic they sped down to the finish line where they were greeted under the arch at Mariner’s Landing with refreshments, snacks and presented with a certificate of completion and appreciation for taking part in the event. It was a wonderful time for the kids and their families and remember; this wasn’t a race, it was a run. So on this day in Wildwood... everybody won.

As a journalist, there are certain events and stories that leave you with a profound feeling of gratitude. I was blessed with the opportunity to cover one this summer that left me with exactly that... the Wounded Warrior Paddle Day, held at The WHARF on Burk and the bay. It was a day for local veterans, accompanied by family and friends, to gather, reminisce, enjoy great food and drinks and most of all, PADDLE BOARD! Although not everyone was eager to hop on a board and brave the possibility of falling in the cold bay water, it was fun watching those who did. Inside The WHARF was a variety of food, including wings, and

the coldest of cold ones on what was a gorgeous but hot day. One young man I had the honor of meeting was Timmy Kelly. A wounded veteran at just 21 years old, Timmy graced the crowd by singing a few of his favorite songs on stage, providing one of the event’s many touching moments. It was a pleasure meeting those who were brave enough to risk their lives so we can enjoy the very freedoms we have today. I left with more than just a full belly, I also parted with a sense of appreciation. I’d like to say a sincere thank you to Dennis Dool and everyone else for having me cover this special event for The Sun.

On the morning of July 4th, Hurricane Arthur was whipping through Wildwood, as heavy winds and rain let everyone in his path know the long holiday weekend may not go exactly as planned. Yet at the Wildwood Convention Center, there everyone was, gearing up for a 5k run to raise money for the Wildwood Veteran’s Memorial Wall while exemplifying the word Dedication. A dedicated bunch unanimously decided the weather would NOT force them indoors and away from such a noble cause, proving that the sun was indeed shining behind those stormy clouds…

Ice House Restaurant’s Coolest couple Chuck & Jeanette Burns hosted another awesome CrabFest!

116 West 1st Avenue • North Wildwood (609) 729-1133

This was an interesting day for me, having only tried crabs twice in my life, leaving me wondering what to expect at The IceHouse Restaurant’s Annual NJ Crab Festival. I walked up to a blocked-off street filled with vendors, face painters, a music tent, drinks and plenty of crab connoisseurs, all making for a pretty festive time! I had the pleasure of meeting Chuck and Jeanette Burns, owners of the Ice House where the event is held each year. People were enjoying the live music performances and lining up to enjoy, what I was brave enough to find out, some amazingly seasoned blue claw crabs (Yes, I tried AND enjoyed the crabs there!) In addition to filling up on delicacies, guests also had the opportunity to donate to a great cause by entering the crab races. The majority of the proceeds went to “Lunch with Lynch,” a FUNraiser created by local John Lynch that donates $500 food cards to children in need attending the island’s grade schools. Names were drawn from the pool of donations and 14 were attached to a particular crab. Unfortunately, the crabs were apparently too tired to race and they had to pick a name out of a hat the oldfashioned way. The event provided plenty of entertainment for all ages and plenty of food and drinks, making for another successful year for the NJ Crab Festival.

Jimmy and Alice Lamaina in the Wildwoods 2014 & 1981

This year, the BBQ Blues Fest was Jampacked all weekend long, with beautiful weather throughout. Thank you to all who attended and participated. Here is one team’s story.

For years I have enjoyed attending the Anglesea Blues & BBQ festival as a spectator and patron. The casual melodic sounds of live performances, the great people you get to share the experience with and above all the amazing aroma and taste of all the barbeque you can eat! This year I was fortunate enough to get a behind the scenes first hand look at exactly what goes into competing in this awesome event. “Bones and Bibs Swine Team”, based out of Blackwood, NJ, was competing for its 2nd Anglesea BBQ festival. They were kind enough to spend time with me over the course of the weekend. I spoke with pitmaster “Big Jim” Lamaina and asked him what he thought was the best part of the whole experience. He said “we love all of it... the people, the atmosphere... all in all it’s just a great time. Forming bonds with all the people who attend the festival, seeing how much they love the food we’re putting out and the smiles on

everyone’s faces.” I added that it must be good for business as well, and he told me they had already booked 7 catering jobs and the team couldn’t be happier to have that opportunity. I was thankful to meet everyone and spend time observing the hard work they put in. These guys and girls are out there cooking around the clock and dealing with Wildwood’s unpredictable weather and enjoying every minute of it! Fortunately, this year, the weather was perfect. The most important question I had for Big Jim was - “are you going to be back next year?” His answer was short and to the point, “Absolutely!” Thanks to “Bones and Bibs Swine Team” for having me and for all the awesome photos, best wishes. ~Chuck Sloan reporting for The SUN

Vicki Manlandro with her 3 dogs, Ruby the red Boston terrier, Lola, the black/brindle terrier and Papi, the white chihuahua

A typical shore day is anything but boring, as creatures of all loving kinds come out to play. Seeing “doggy double” is common here, as Man’s Best Friend often outnumber their owners, providing twice the love and loyalty while leaving sandy paw prints in their path and taking up permanent residence in our hearts. Barking in harmony with the sounds of the sea only announces their all-important arrival. It’s been said two hearts are better than one and many around town would agree; two furry beings are double the fun, whether on a heavenly hillside or within a seaside sanctuary.

Magnolia Memories By Michele Bucklin Curtis

F

Dorothy Bucklin in the Shell Shop

or many summers I remember my family renting an apartment on Magnolia Avenue in Wildwood N.J. My parents would load up the trunk with box loads of food. Having an Italian mother and grandmother that were excellent cooks meant that we had homemade meatballs with spaghetti , roasted rosemary chicken and other delightful meals during our week down the shore. We sat on a lot of our clothes in the car to make sure there was enough room for food as our family was never going to starve on vacation. I remember when we first arrived at Magnolia Apartments and got the car unpacked how my brother Tom and I would walk the half block up or should I say run up the ramp to the boardwalk and head right over to Hunts pier to see what kind of new ride they had put in for the season. This was in the 1960s and Hunt’s pier was the in-place. I remember when they put in the log flume what an amazing sight that was. Back in those days the ocean would come up under the pier. So on the beach at high tide, mommy and I would take walks under the pier and see what kind of sea creatures would be trapped in the tidal pools around the pier pillars. My Nana always wore a kerchief on her head on the beach and she loved going in the water and I would feel safe holding her hand as we jumped the waves. Daddy first took me on the Hunt’s pier flyer. It was a wonderful wooden rollercoaster with a fantastic thrilling track! I remember back then the long lines to get on the Golden Nugget mine ride. Life was simpler then and folks loved the thrills and twists and turns and mysteries within the creative mineshaft adventure. The pirate ship Skua, a walk through, had the best slanted room ever and you couldn’t help but run from one end of the room to the other. Of course there were

Sportland, Marine and Fun Piers and we covered the whole circuit during our week. My brother Tom would make his way down the boardwalk to the fun shop, where he would purchase joke gifts to play on us and to add to his magic routines. Every morning at my young age, I rented a bicycle across the street from the apartments and would take off on the boardwalk for an hour long bike ride stopping to buy fresh juice from one of the stands and a donut at another . Things were safer then for a child alone and I had no fear in my independent way of just going off on my own and enjoying that daily ride to greet the day. Nana loved to sit on the front porch in those old wooden rockers while watching the people go by as they went up and down the ramp to the boardwalk. Douglas fudge was always a favorite and without a doubt we always had plenty of fudge around! My brother Tom and I used to like to sit behind the front window and play tricks on people walking by the apartment. I was one of the first persons that I knew of that had one of those laughing bags where you would just press the button and crazy laughter would go on and on ! This was courtesy of my much older brothers Jim and Joe who had recently been in Boston where they purchased it for me! When folks walked by they had no idea what or who it was that was laughing like a hyena!! Mom always had to make a traditional stop at the Anglesea Shell shop where we would spend hours just browsing and enjoying seeing these treasures from the sea. We would always go one day to see the sunken ship in Cape May and search for Cape May diamonds!! What great fun and memories on that exploratory adventure !! Never in my wildest Wildwood dreams in those years did I ever think that I would end up having a little place to enjoy with my husband Paul to continue making new memories . Somewhere in my mind I can still smell the fresh gravy/sauce on the stove in that apartment and can see nana standing there. It is all well and good in the memory kept away in my heart and mind where I first learned to love the Wildwoods.

3 Generations of Wildwood lovers, Dorothy & Michele Bucklin and Mamie Diguiseppe Focoso on Magnolia Ave. beach

During the 1960s, the Bucklins stayed at the Magnolia Apts. for 6 years in a row. Jim Bucklin said the rent was $150 per week! He would save up all year to take his family.

Michele & Paul Curtis spend as much time as they are able to at their North Wildwood condo

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” ~Mark Twain

Only a handful of Wildwoodians can say. . .

“I’M A DR. MACE BABY!”

Dr. Margaret Mace Dec. 21, 1871 - Dec. 15, 1951

Dr. Margaret Mace Hospital 25th & Atlantic Aves., North Wildwood 1915 - 1950

A Brief History of Dr. Margaret Mace Margaret Mace was born in Leicester, England and came to America in 1874. Around 1880 her family settled in Anglesea at a home on Spruce & New Jersey Aves. She attended grammar school and upon graduation, went to Bridgeton Institute to become a teacher. She wanted to become a nurse and began to pursue her passion for helping people. Dr. Mace graduated with her degree in medicine in 1905 from the Women’s College of Medicine in Philadelphia. She began her practice

in North Wildwood at 17th & Atlantic Aves., later moving her expanding practice to an office at Chestnut & New Jersey Aves. She then opened her hospital at 25th & Atlantic in 1915. It remained in operation for 35 years until 1950. Dr. Margaret Mace passed away at 81 years of age on December 16, 1951. For the past 10 years, we have honored her with this eventful photo shoot, where a handful of her 6,000 babies that she delivered gather together for a reunion. Perhaps the best tribute to this great woman are her own words which she spoke at the time of her first testimonial in 1929. She said, “There is no place on earth like my home town; no people like my home people; I came here when it was a wilderness; it is one of the finest places in the world, in my work I have tried to do my best, but I had help, helped by the hand of God.” Note from the Editor: I am honored to be a part of Dr. Mace’s story and to work together with Steve & Betty at the Lighthouse, who serve up refreshments for all the folks at the reunion.

“WE WERE BORN AT HATTIE LONG’S!”

Only a handful of Wildwoodians can say. . .

“I WAS BORN AT HOME!” A Brief History of Long’s Maternity House In the early 1900’s, maternity homes were an easier, more comfortable, convenient way to deliver your baby and in Wildwood, there were two popular places for this! The first home, in which around 6,000 babies were delivered, was Dr. Margaret Mace’s hospital in North Wildwood. The second home, located on Montgomery Avenue in Wildwood was also a very special maternity home that was run by mid-wife, Mrs. Hattie Long.

“Our Very Special Babies!” 1. Patricia Nesbitt Nagel Oct. 12, 1946 2. George Bundschu June 8, 1948 3. Vicki Weatherby Bundschu March 15, 1949 4. Florence Newmaster Turner July 19, 1941 *5. This special baby, Evangeline (Angie) Lebato Greenfield was delivered by a midwife at home at 4600 New Jersey Ave., Wildwood, NJ on March 17, 1920 {Angie is the youngest & the oldest baby born at home :-}

After Mr. Long passed away in 1923, Mrs. Long started the maternity home in 1926 in order to make a living for herself. The maternity home was successful for 20 years as 4 or more doctors worked along side of Mrs. Long to keep the business going. Mrs. Long and her team of doctors delivered around 515 babies during that time, 9 of which were her own. Unfortunately, only 7 of the 9 Long babies survived; however, the oldest daughter of Mrs. Long grew up helping with the home and soon became a very helpful aid for Hattie during the birth processes.

John Long, grandson to Mrs. Long, was born on August 5, 1929. He was the only guy born into the Long family during that time.

Although it has since been sold many times, the maternity home still stands today, filled with many memories. It still has the long, enclosed porch in which the babies were held after they were born. This was a 3 bedroom house, and through the duration that the house was a maternity home, the bedrooms’ upstairs were the sites of where the mothers stayed during the procedures. Mrs. Long made the living room into a bedroom for herself to make all of her guests comfortable. At a photo gathering for this maternity home in July, 2014, 11 people that were born in the home showed up to capture the memory for a lifetime. Save the date, July 13, 2015 for next year’s photo reunion.

The Museum is having a great summer with more guests than ever. Visitors are really interested in the Wildwoods of yesterday; the old rooming houses, hotels and motels, restaurants, clubs and the Castle Dracula. We have pictures and memorabilia of so many of these sites. Most of you remember Pedro and his donkey that was at the corner of Ocean and Rio Grand Ave. It was the mascot for the Rio Motel. After many years, Carl Aspenburg has donated it to the museum where it is on display. In its day there were as many pictures taken with Petro and the donkey as pictures are taken in front of the great Wildwood sign and beach balls on Rio Grande and the boardwalk today. WANTED! Volunteers and Board members. If the Museum is to stay in existence, then we need some people to step forward and help us. You can be from Cape May County or a summer resident. If you are interested in helping, please call Kathy Skouras, our President at (609)523-0277 or email her at wildwoodhistoricalsociety@ hotmail.com. We have books of old Leader newspapers from 1898 to the 90’s. The museum just had the first 12 books converted to searchable

CD’s. Thanks to Tom Byrne and the Byrne Fund for Wildwood Inc. for donating $3500. to get them completed. I know everyone is asking for donations these days, but the newspaper is deteriorating and this project needs to continue. Thank you in advance for your help. ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK. THE CENTER CITY CLOCK. Randy Hentges from ABS Sign Company has stepped up after seeing our article in The Leader asking for help in rebuilding the clock which was located at the corner of Oak and Atlantic Ave. for many years. It had been sitting in our back storage room. We are going to put it on a pole outside of the Museum when the work is completed for all to see and enjoy. Thanks again for the crew at ABS Sign Company for helping the museum. During the winter months we have the local 3rd graders visit the Museum. Some of their questions are: What is a typewriter or a 45rpm record player? How does a dial phone work? What are Transistor radios? We have a very old stove with an oven attached which originally used kerosene to fuel it and then was converted to natural gas. I was explaining it and a young girl asked if the oven was the first microwave oven and how did you turn it on! Please support The Wildwood Historical Museum. Stop in for a visit. Send your friends and visitors. It’s one of the best attractions in the Wildwoods. Keep in mind that we will be open 9am 2pm Monday through Saturdays until September 27th, and then we go on our Fall schedule October 2nd thru November 1st Thursday, Friday & Saturdays, 9am - 2pm. We are closed Sundays and all National holidays. We hope to see you soon,

Dear Visitors, We hope your vacation was everything you dreamed it would be. I personally enjoyed watching you riding your bikes, playing in the sand, and discovering all that Wildwood by-the-sea has to offer. A few times I stopped to take your group photos, or point you in the right direction, and wished I could’ve followed you straight down to the beach or to your favorite restaurant. It’s a blessing to live in a vacation town that holds so much happiness for so many people. You are the reason we business owners are so passionate about what we do. Thank you so much for visiting our happy little island. ~Dorothy

I’m writing to tell you about my amazing daughter, Gerri Wayne. In 2007, she was diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Five years later, she was diagnosed with throat cancer. Despite her medical condition, she has the best positive attitude and believes anything is possible, including her ability to beat her debilitating illnesses, with God’s help. She is a true Wildwood lover who has been coming here since before her first birthday. In 2004, we purchased a condo from the hardworking staff at Blue Ocean Realty including Rich, June, Tony and Lou, to be built on East Pine Avenue. Gerri became President of the Association and her husband, Ali, a trustee. In 2012, we sold the condo, and thanks to Anthony de Bundo from Cedar Villa Inc., purchased a beautiful home that Gerri designed herself. Owning a brand new home in Wildwood has always been a dream of mine that my daughter, as sick as she was, helped to accomplish. I pray that she and her husband and I have many good years in our lovely Wildwood home. May God bless you. I think that The SUN is the very best magazine and has the most wonderful articles and features. Thank you for featuring our Wildwood story. ~Gerry Reed (Gerri Wayne’s mother)

I’m writing to tell you about my mom, Gerry Reed. She has been coming to Wildwood since 1947, when she was three years old and stayed in a boarding house with her mother. She married my dad in 1967, then had me. We had a wonderful time in Wildwood, staying in the motels while enjoying the beach and boardwalk. In 1992, my dad passed away, leaving my mom a widow at the age of 46. I married in 1994 and we all came to Wildwood and once again stayed at the motels. My mom’s dream was to spend a summer at the shore, but at the time, she still had to work. Like her, I’m very driven, despite being diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in 1996 and throat cancer in 2012. In 2004, we purchased a condo to be built on East Pine Avenue thanks to the best staff at Blue Ocean Realty. During that time, we met a lot of wonderful Wildwood people, including Mayor Ernie Troiano, Jr. Although we loved the condo, we decided to sell it in 2012. We wanted a backyard, which in particular made my two loving, crazy Boston Terriers, Mardi and Jazzy, very happy. We found a beautiful place thanks to Anthony De Abundo from Cedar Villa, Inc. Jennifer from Shore Title was wonderful as always. Being diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome in 2012 really changed my life, but it was also the year we found a place to build our dream home. I am still fighting my battle, but my mom is now retired and living her dream. I’m grateful to all who made our Wildwood dream possible. ~Gerri Reed Echevarria (Gerry Reed’s daughter)

“When you yearn to go back to your old home, you’ll find it isn’t the old home you miss but your childhood.” ~Sam Ewing

Thank You for 40 “Golden” Years in North Wildwood BY THE GOLDEN CHILDREN

The Golden summer home above circa 1974 and 2002 on the left.

I

n our Golden family, many of our fond memories were crafted in the Wildwoods. Tom and Louise Golden (our parents) were in high school (Dad at North Catholic and Mom at Nazareth Academy) when they met in 1954, on Wildwood’s Poplar Avenue beach. The dye was cast that the beaches of Wildwood would always be a part of our lives. After serving in the US Army, dad returned home to marry our mom in 1958. Time would pass as they raised four children in Philadelphia, in a wonderful row-home where 6 people and a dog shared great family traditions, and all looked forward to that one week summer vacation in North Wildwood. We stayed at many rental locations where that sometimes, 5-block walk to the beach (not to mention the 200 yards of beach) meant that four children under the age of 6 made the long trek with excitement, with dad and mom knowing the trip back would not be as ambitious for the kids. These were the days when heavy wooden cribs were part of the “beachwear” and mom and dad could be guaranteed, what seemed like a longer walk back, with tired wet kids, buckets, umbrella and that trusty wooden crib. The Wildwood Boardwalk was always a treat with the rides, lights, sounds and the traditional foods we all cherished, and still do. A number of years later in 1974, North Wildwood still showed no signs of the modern housing and condominiums that exist today, but mostly of one level concrete homes or multi-unit properties where the vacation traditions for many Philadelphia families were born. The two-story motels spotted a few locations along with miniature golf/ ice cream stands, corner stores and bicycle rentals. With four children in the Catholic schools of Philadelphia, both our parents had to work, as they always gave first priority to their children. At this time, they made a decision to buy a home with rental units in North Wildwood, a place where they had rented on Ocean Avenue with the family some years before. Since the ultimate goal would be giving the kids opportunity to spend summers at the shore away from the hot city and enjoy the beach life, mom was able to take summer leaves while dad came on weekends after working in Philadelphia. Our great dog Buttons, also loved

The house did not have air-conditioning, but the cool sea air helped us to easily forget the city heat. All the kids benefited by having summer jobs which ensured many fun experiences and friendships, including working at businesses our parents eventually owned from selling waffles and ice cream, to groceries and beach supplies. The sacrifices our parents made included many hours and challenges maintaining an old property that only industrious parents could handle; providing immaculate apartments for weekly rentals, making curtains and covers for furniture, as well as dealing with roofing, electrical and plumbing challenges that the home remodeling shows would be amazed at today—and, there was no such thing as calling in any “outside” help. (Mom had to be the electrician and plumber on occasion.) All of us kids, of course, had our own regiment of responsibilities. Our property also had a beautiful garden which included over 50 tomato plants, corn, squash, peppers, eggplant and broccoli. We all became experts at weeding for sure! As our family grew and grandchildren were born, the house became more

crowded and the comforts of sleeping bags were realized, especially when giving up beds for visiting friends and family. Come to think of it, it was a little cooler sleeping on the floor! The big family dinners were common and special, and so many fond memories were captivated in that great house. Sitting out back under candlelight seemed to inspire so many great conversations. After about 20 years of summers, our family was devastated at the untimely death of our sister Louise in the spring of 1996; she was a trauma nurse and mother to twin 16 month-old children. Nothing could have prepared us for this tragic loss as we were all stunned and saddened; we could not imagine a summer without her there. Life truly provides many joyous memories, yet has its’ unexpected hurdles and challenges. The North Wildwood shore, that year, turned out to be our savior, with surroundings that reminded us of our close family, and a reminder of the importance of family time. She was a part of so many memories. Thankfully, our sisters’ babies were consumed with new beach surroundings, the ocean and salt air provided consolation to us all, and the bright moon and stars on a summer night provided the

Grand kids with some beautiful garden vegetables peace we needed. Each one of us felt the time at the shore together in the summer of 1996 to be very therapeutic and to this day appreciate the comfort the ocean and beach breezes gave us. As time moved on and almost another 20 more years have passed, our family grew, and the continual maintenance with an old property lost its allure, especially when we were all working fulltime jobs and maintaining homes in Bucks County consumed much free time. In 2001, our parents decided to demolish the property and build new to provide modern comforts, including air conditioning at the shore—which would have been a significant luxury in 1974—it was a first for all of us! Some of the grand kids are now grown and involved in professional or military careers, while two are still in grade school making memories at the beach like their parents did. In 2014, we celebrate spending summers at the same location for over 40 years. There have been many changes to North Wildwood during this time, and only a handful of the 40-year residents or their extended families remain. The special highlights of those 40 years since 1974 are not the buildings and new amenities around North Wildwood, but summer memories created every year for this family that have a unique place for each of us. Talking to the long term residents brings those experiences immediately to the present as we reminisce about the “old days”. Our Golden summers at the shore have been so special, with a curio table and current household full of pictures and items indicative of times gone by. Sitting on the deck at night or early mornings and looking towards the ocean, you can take yourself back to those special North Wildwood family moments over 4 decades and be consumed in many special thoughts of being “down the shore”. Thanks Mom and Dad for giving us all of them. Love, Your Children

In today’s world of impersonal service by ATMs, computers, vending machines and self-checkouts, we value the friendly, personal service we do receive; perhaps from the pharmacy, bank or grocery store. Even more, we value the memories of how things used to be different- how everyone knew each other, and you called all of your neighbors by name. Taylor’s market in Wildwood Crest is one of those beautiful memories of a family owned and run business. Today: if you drive down New Jersey Avenue into the Crest, you will notice the road widening by Aster Avenue. There are several businesses on this stretch of wider road that holds a row of parking space in front of them. One of these stores is a brick fronted building that is currently Marcella’s Gelateria. 1940’s: This same brick fronted building was Taylor’s Market and the wide road housed a train station instead of spare parking. This was how it looked when Eugene Taylor purchased it from a Mr. Bounshoe, who originally intended it to belong to one of his two sons. One son chose a different piece of property, and the remaining son it would have passed to died fighting WW2 in Europe. So Eugene Taylor was able to purchase the building in the mid 1940’s, and turned it into Taylor’s market. Eugene worked at the Wildwood Crest Police Department, but was also a butcher. He had two sons who both worked with him after attending Wildwood High, Eugene “Scoop” and Jack. Later Jack Taylor would join the army and get stationed in Fort Dix as a butcher, and then come home and take over the family business. He had three daughters who would also work at Taylor’s Market with him, and today his daughter Joan Taylor Maurer keeps Taylor’s alive with her memories. The outside of the building looks mostly the same as it does today, wide windows and a neat brick front. The walls of the building are made of cinder blocks, a term we are all familiar with. However, we actually know where the cinders for these blocks came from- the ashes of the coal from the adjacent Wildwood Crest train station. The inside of the store has been remodeled, since the original back of the store had a meat room with a slatted wood floor, letting the 3 kegs (900 pounds total) of block ice drain and keep the meat cool. In the 1960’s, Jack bought the business from his father Eugene. He and his wife Mona, as well as their daughters

Linda, Janice and Joan would run the store. The three sisters worked “as soon as they were tall enough to look over the counter!” In addition to being a meat market and making sandwiches, the store had vegetables, fruits and groceries. Locals would shop there, as well as all of the men taking the train to work in Philadelphia, and of course many of the visitors in the summer. Taylor’s also delivered groceries by bike and truck to local houses, businesses, Wildwood schools and fishing boats. “It was kind of like the Wawa of the time, “ Joan explained. “It wasn’t like when you go into a store now. There were stools in front of the meat lock and my dad called it the confessional. People would come in, sit and chat and tell him things they would never tell anyone else. And when they wanted meat he would bring the whole piece out and let them pick what they wanted. As he would cut off the piece they wanted, the men would have their coffee and they would just talk.” They cooked their own roast beef and roast pork, which sold well because as soon as you walked in and smelled it cooking you wanted to buy some! Taylor’s was also famous for potato salad, made by Eugene’s wife Lillian and later perfected by Sandy Lipesky. In addition to many family members working there, other long time employees were Jake Tillison Sr and Bill Hickey. Later the store was run by Dave Westog and after him by Sandy and Andy Lipesky. Joan has many fond memories of working there and the people she knew. She remembers, the store would open at 7:30 am and sometimes a young local boy would come in, still in his pajamas. “…he would say his mom was sleeping and there was no food in the house and my father would send him home with a gallon of milk and a box of cereal. Sometimes he got paid and sometimes he didn’t. There were no food stamps back then but everyone helped each other out.” Another favorite memory was of a woman who wore such strong perfume that after she left everyone knew she had been there and exactly which shopping cart she used! Without a doubt, the people we know make the businesses what they are. A familiar face and kind word everyday is what makes you want to return. Taylor’s market served us island folk from the mid 1940s until the mid 1990’s, and as they remember their customers, so we will remember their service.

2014 INDIAN SUMMERMOVIE GUIDE

by Meg Corcoran Conducting THE INTERVIEW on all things Wildwood, our summer-into-fall Hollywood friends head down the shore to experience its reputed enchantment firsthand. Researching the BOOK OF LIFE, they learn about the coastal charm that’s thrived throughout generations, making even ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY turn darn-right pleasant for the troubled youth, whose luck suddenly changes when he touches our superior sand. The previously GONE GIRL has come alive on the paparazzi-free beach, vowing never to leave (or give interviews). The DOLPHIN TALE 2 captivating for just one feature film is even more enlightening along the coast, where our stars plan on coasting happily into the most vibrant season. Before coasting to the closest movie theater, please check your local listings for release date changes… A DOLPHIN TALE 2 (opens Sept. 12th) inspiring for words alone tells the story of a dedicated crew (including Harry Connick Jr., Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd) feeling at home at The Wildwoods Hydrofest when they realize the only way to keep their dolphin friend Winter in her watery dwelling is to find her a mate. With summer declaring, THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU (opens Sept. 19th); four siblings (including Jason Bateman and Tina Fey) head home for their father’s funeral, their mother’s (Jane Fonda) peculiar declarations and the family-friendly Irish Fall Festival. A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES (opens Sept. 19th) can’t compare to a soothing stroll along the seawall when a cop-turned-haunted private investigator (Liam Neeson) is hired by a drug kingpin to track down his wife’s killer. In another lifetime, THE EQUALIZER (Denzel Washington, opens Sept. 26th) faked his death in order to live a peaceful existence filled with ocean sunrises, boardwalk bike rides and the occasional dark-of-night good deed, the last of which lands him on the hit list of Russian gangsters. A group of underground trash collectors known as THE BOXTROLLS (opens Sept. 26th) cross paths with an evil exterminator (voice of Ben Kingsley). It’s up to their

young charge (voice of Isaac Hempstead Wright) and his new friend (voice of Elle Fanning) to save them in time for the best of treasures waiting to be discovered at Ed’s Funcade Boardwalk Treasure Hunt. An American woman (Reese Witherspoon) living THE GOOD LIE (opens Oct. 3rd) discovers what truly matters when she helps Sudanese refugees adapt to good old American living at events like the Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey. The husband (Ben Affleck) of a mysteriously GONE GIRL (Rosamund Pike, opens Oct. 3rd) craves his own vanishing act inside the Greater Wildwood Elks Halloween Haunted House when he is suspected of his wife’s disappearance. A star and his producer (James Franco and Seth Rogen) would rather hang out at the Motorcycle Beach Drag Races after they land THE INTERVIEW (opens Oct. 10th) of a lifetime with a North Korean dictator, resulting in the CIA enlisting the inept pair to assassinate the ruler. ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY (Ed Oxenbould, opens Oct. 10th) gets increasingly better when he and his unlucky parents (Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner) become terribly creative participates in the Halloween House Decorating Contest. A young man (voice of Diego Luna) on an animated adventure through three amazing worlds finds the answers to life’s big questions as well as the secret to honestly winning the Wildwoods Boardwalk Pumpkin Run within the colorful BOOK OF LIFE (opens Oct. 17th). After spending equal time on the beach and the boardwalk, THE EQUALIZER settles in for an enlightening night of stars and stories. The first script tells THE GOOD LIE, leaving our hero appreciative of truthful moments spent seaside. Farther down the movie block, A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES lacks the same effect as a beach stroll, where THE BOXTROLLS are busy sweeping their metal detectors over the pristine sand. As the stories’ end and the seasons change, the cast declares to summer, THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU as they look forward to hayrides, Halloween and Heavenly moments beneath a Harvest Moon captured by the beautiful sea…

The Saga of

Turtlegut Inlet & Wildwood Gables BY KIRK HASTINGS

Fishing in Turtle Gut Inlet

The Wildwood Gables real estate tower (circa 1920s at St. Paul & Pacific Aves.) was built so that prospective lot owners in Wildwood Gables could inspect the entire development land area from the top of the tower!

H

ave you ever wondered why the island that contains The Wildwoods is referred to as “Five Mile Beach Island”, when the beach there (from Anglesea down to the Cape May toll bridge) is seven miles long? And why the area south of Wildwood Crest and Diamond Beach is referred to as “Two Mile”? That’s because they used to be two separate islands! Many people would be surprised to know that Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest once had a direct outlet to the ocean. Up until 1920 Turtle Gut Inlet, located about where Denver and Toledo Avenues are today, was a popular fishing spot. But by 1919 land for development in the Crest (incorporated in 1910) had already become scarce, and real estate men started looking around for more property to develop. Naturally, they noticed the smaller island to the south of Five Mile Beach Island (on the other side of Turtle Gut) known as Two Mile Beach Island. By the twentieth century the inlet had gradually filled in until it was navigable by boat traffic only at high tide, making it of little use as a waterway. The developers reasoned that if the two islands could just be joined, then another large tract for development would result. In 1919 the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Cape May County okayed filling in Turtle Gut (there were no Wetlands restrictions in those days). Three attempts were made. In the first attempt, engineers used two million yards of sand to fill in the Inlet, but fast currents and a series of storms washed away their efforts. Bulkheads were used in a second attempt, with rows of pilings filled in with canvas bags of sand and rocks, but once again the currents of Turtle Gut prevailed. Success finally came with the third try in 1922. This time bundles of oak brush were wired together and placed

Pumping out Turtlegut Inlet ~ Looking north from Toledo Ave., Wildwood Crest 1926 Photo from the collection of Dave & Theresa Williams

in alternating layers, with rocks poured on top and held in place by mud pumped in from nearby Sunset Lake. Turtle Gut Inlet was finally closed. At the same time, bulkheads were installed along the beachfront and sand was pumped into the area from the bottom of Sunset Lake. With the construction of the rock pile to the south and the closing of Turtle Gut Inlet, Wildwood Crest’s beaches began to grow, in a process which has continued to this day. Once Turtle Gut Inlet was closed off, the newly-resulting land area was then named Wildwood Gables (or Wildwood Gables By The Sea). This was the area south of Stanton Road, with individual lots plotted between Philadelphia Avenue (now New Jersey Avenue) and East Railroad Avenue (now Bayview Drive) on the west, and Ocean Avenue (now Atlantic Avenue) on the east, with reserved lands on the east and west. Shortly after Turtle Gut Inlet was filled in, a pier was built jutting out into Sunset Lake at Stanton Road (the northern boundary of the Wildwood Gables development area). This became the home of the Wildwood Gables Yacht Club, which still exists today. Wildwood Gables was both a real estate development (comprising the entirety of Wildwood Crest south from Stanton Road), and the name of a corporation that was associated with the development

of the area. There are three sections of plot plans for this area filed in the Cape May County Clerk's Office in Cape May Court House. Sections 1 and 2 contain signatures for Wildwood Strand Realty Co. (John J. McDevitt, Jr., President), and on others, Wildwood Gables Incorporated (Frank Curran, President, and Leonard Pedrick, Secretary). The plot plan for Section 3 reads: "Frank J. Pedrick & Son, Agents for Wildwood Strand Realty Co. by Leonard F. Pedrick." A blurb in a publication in the Wildwood Crest vertical file in the Main Branch of the Cape May County Library in Cape May Court House seems to indicate that the Pedricks were brought in to do development. We know that Frank J. Pedrick & Son was responsible for building the many Spanish-style houses scattered across Wildwood Crest that still stand today. He not only had an office in Wildwood Crest, but also ones in Atlantic City and Philadelphia. As for the ownership of Wildwood Gables, Wildwood Strand Realty Company acquired the entire parcel from Wildwood Crest Realty Company by deed dated July 15, 1925, recorded in the Cape May County Clerk's Office on July 28, 1925 in DB 403 P 381. Wildwood Strand Realty Company also acquired all of Two Mile Beach in Lower Township in 1925 from Walter J. Wood. The officers who signed the deed for Wildwood Crest Realty Company were Robert Hammond, President, and David A. Hammond, Secretary.

This is the former office building of the Wildwood Gables Real Estate Development Corporation -- it still stands at St. Paul and Pacific Avenues today, and is used as a private residence.

Frank Pedrick’s business card, showing his other offices in Philadelphia and Atlantic City

After the plot plans of the new lots were filed, Wildwood Strand Realty Company subsequently sold hundreds of lots, with the deeds being signed by John J. McDevitt, Jr. as President. Wildwood Strand Realty Company deeded over 700 lots (but less than 900) in a 1925 deed recorded in DB 525 P367 to Wildwood Gables Inc. Wildwood Gables did manage to sell some of those lots, but apparently had money problems during the depression, since there were over 700 Tax Sale Certificates filed against lots they owned on June 20, 1936 for unpaid real estate taxes in 1930 and/or 1931, with the unpaid taxes for subsequent years being added. At least two of these deeds were signed by John J. McDevitt, Jr., Sterling McDevitt and/or George Russell as officers of that corporation, and not by any of the Pedricks. There is no way to verify in the Cape May County Clerk’s Office whether or not Wildwood Strand Realty company ever went into bankruptcy. However, it was still selling lots in 1931, an indication that it did survive the Depression.

“The world appears very little to a soul that contemplates the greatness of God.” - Brother Lawrence (1614-1691)

Turtlegut Inlet & Wildwood Gables Interestingly enough, Google Maps on the internet still designates the southern portion of Wildwood Crest as “Wildwood Gables” -- even though Wildwood Gables was never an incorporated municipality in the State of New Jersey. However, older tax maps sometimes superimpose the names of large development tracts onto the maps. Perhaps this is where Google got the name. Around 1923, the Wildwood Gables Real Estate Company erected a large, 4-story observation tower at St. Paul and Pacific Avenues. This was so prospective lot buy-

ers could go up into the tower and survey the entire Wildwood Gables development area, from the Cape May toll bridge to the south to Stanton Road (and beyond) to the north. The actual Wildwood Gables Real Estate Office, another small Spanishstyle building, was located just behind the tower. That smaller office building still stands today, now used as a private residence.

Beyond the highly developed landscape we’ve come to recognize with its condos and townhomes, motels and boardwalk, lies an obliterated landscape we can hardly imagine once existed. In Wildwood Ways and Down East Wilds, Thomas Martindale describes this dense maritime forest of innumerable wildflowers, twisted cedars, pine, and holly that put the ‘wild’ in Wildwood on this once bridgeless and solitary island. Rolling dunes of ‘sugar sand’ wrapped around the island on the east side, while marshland and bay waters bordered the west side, forging streams that once emptied into ponds and lakes deep within the ‘woods.’ The author writes fluidly of the area’s history, tales of wild cattle, buried pirate treasure and crabbing in Grassy Sound, as well as a chapter designated to the somber solitudes of the Maine wilderness. Since the book’s illustrations were originally created for the Philadelphia Inquirer and The (Original) Wildwood Sun, it is fitting to be republished by Dorothy Kulisek, the editor of The Five Mile Beach Sun (since 2004). She became aware of the book when first approached by Richard Dietz, a collector of local Wildwood history, to publish excerpts of this enduring Wildwood narrative in her paper. They both felt the importance of republishing for the sake of the preservation of printed materials, as well as for local interest. It will be available for purchase in many local businesses including the Hereford Lighthouse gift shop. If you live or vacation in the Wildwoods, than you will love reading Thomas Martindale’s first person perspective in which he so eloquently describes its timelessness~ sparking your imagination with sketches and photographs that are some of the island’s earliest pictorial documents. Whether it be on a beach chair, a porch rocker, or in the comforts of your home, reading Wildwood Ways and Down East Wilds will incite your love of the Wildwoods evermore.

I swear these summers seem to fly bye so quickly, I find it difficult to get a chance to catch all the species that are swimming around in our waters. If you like variety then late August and early September is your time to shine. You name it and it can be caught. Now don’t get frustrated if you see all those big Flounders in the press and you have had no such luck. I cross paths with many skilled anglers and all have said this is one of the toughest years in our area for any consistency in catches. Ocean City and north seemed to have had a better season in the back waters and reefs. The water temps hurt the early fishing season of June and July in our area. August weather and warmer water temps seemed to have picked up the catch for many species. The rabid anglers who put lots of their time and effort will always produce better results. As a half full optimist I believe September will produce the best opportunity of all of the seasons. That is predicated upon us being spared from any major storms. The Fluke will be in transition from the back waters to the ocean, inshore reefs and shoals. The Fluke numbers should improve dramatically as the keeper ratio will also be better. Hopefully, they have grown that extra inch to make them eligible to swim into your skillet. You can’t beat fresh flounder on the grill smothered with bruschetta. Bluefish, Weakfish, and Croakers will be in good numbers for lots of action especially if you have some kids aboard. In the early fall trolling five fathom bank should offer up Bonita, blues, and a few cobia. Bonita are skittish when you use wire leader so tie your mono leader right to the hook. Bonita give a good fight and are favored by many for the table. The offshore fishing seemed to have had a fine season so far. If the weather stays calm the Tuna and Mahi should find their way inshore for the smaller boats to get a special treat. Trolling or chunking butterfish will catch both Blue and Yellow fin Tuna. The Canyons will load up with good numbers of yellow Tuna, Marlin, Mahi, and an occasional Wahoo. If you ever had the urge to experience the Blue Water Sport fishing, September is your time. The fish are schooling for their normal migration and have the feed bag on to build up the fat reserves for the long migration. The fall has three problems. Wind, changing weather and Marine Fisheries closing so many seasons. However, If you are looking for an opportunity for the little guys to have a great chance to catch fish early October is a great time. The first mud slough off the beach is

the place. They are loaded with small blues, croakers, weakfish and fluke. They might not be big enough to keep but they will supply lots of action. Due to most seasons being closed the middle of October is a time to get smart and get the ‘honey do’ list shorter because the Stripers start in earnest around the Harvest moon. The Back Bay waters will hold smaller Stripers for the bad weather days. Hopefully by late October some of the larger ones will drop down to the lower Delaware Bay for us to get a chance at some nice sized stripers on the chunk. The bluefish that enter the bay in the fall are some of the largest you’ll see all year. Sea bass and tog will be open but can be difficult to locate at this time of year. Weather is always a concern at this time of year. Colder water represent a hypothermic danger so be safe. Mother Nature can be indifferent to our human stupidity. The lack of boat traffic in the fall limits your chance of getting help in an emergency. Our Coast Guard generally response very quickly but hypothermia can set in within 20 minutes. A final point I would like to note that Marine fisheries was challenged lately for an incorrect statement that the commercial fishing industry generates more dollars into the economy per pounds of fish caught then recreational fishing. Marine Fisheries was called on this myth. The truth was that recreational fishing generates 4 times more dollars spent in the economy per pound of fish caught than commercial. Apparently their math was incorrect by including imported foreign fish in their study. Let’s all pray for good weather, calm seas and a fall fishing season with you making many great memories for all to cherish forever. God Bless

around 1891, when foreigners were encouraged to settle in the United States, and about 600 families from Eastern Europe came to Woodbine, New Jersey to live. A settlement had been established there by a donation of land by Baron Maurice de Hirsch who was a wealthy Jewish industrialist and banker who wanted to resettle Jewish immigrants in rural communities. The Woodbine immigrants became farmers and took their farm produce and poultry to nearby communities to sell. When they visited Holly Beach, many were impressed by the area, and decided to settle closer to the shore and left Woodbine. Eventually there were about 20 families in Wildwood, who saw a need for a symagogue. Weekday services were held at the home of a resident if there was a service. The first Rosh Hashanah service was held in 1911, at the home of Max and Anna Baker on 206 E. Baker Avenue (next to Stiles Pharmacy) with ten families attending. Later high holiday services were held at a hotel. In the Friday, October 2, 1914 issue of the Five Mile Beach Weekly Journal, a headline appeared: “Jewish Church Organized”. At the suggestion of Louis Sagel, the “Hebrews of Wildwood” started the first congregation and Sagel donated $100. Officers that were elected at the first meeting at the Bartram Hotel were President: Joseph Empol, Vice President Philip Gould, Treasurer Max Baker, Financial Secretary Rabbi Max Halpern, Recording Secretary Louis Senekoff. Trustees chosen were Louis Sagel, Benjamin Gidding, Mrs. Jennie Saltzman, Max Warobe, and Wolf Carof. As soon as the necessary funds were raised, they decided that a permanent building

would be constructed. The building would be called Beth Judah Hebrew Temple. “Donations will be cheerfully accepted by the Treasurer Max Baker, at his home on the corner of Pacific and Baker Avenue.” Max Baker became one of the pillars of the synagogue and as his family continued to grow, was always active in the synagogue. Max had a paint and hardware store on Pacific Avenue, across from Wildwood High between Montgomery and Baker. He and Anna raised a family of six boys and one girl, who all graduated from Wildwood High and all worked in the store, and most settled in Wildwood. The oldest son, Benjamin owned a 5 & 10, Dan came next and eventually he relocated the hardware store to Montgomery and New Jersey Avenues, daughter Yetta married Dr.Isidore Rubins, Edward was the Wildwood City Clerk and had a real estate office on Oak Ave, Morris had a men’s shop on Oak and Pacific, Hyman owned a paint factory, and Samuel had a 5 & 10 in Cape May Court House and then a shoe store in Wildwood. (Fannie, Max’s eldest daughter from a previous marriage, did not live in Wildwood; she was married before the family came here). In the thirties, Pacific Avenue was a vibrant shopping street with many Jewish shop owners. The Austin Property, the current site of Beth Judah Temple was purchased in 1919. The building was renovated and served as a house of worship until 1928 when it was moved to the adjoining lot to make room for the building of the synagogue. It was renovated again for use as a social hall and Hebrew School. After many years of fund raising the ground for the new temple was broken on March 3, 1929. The cornerstone was laid on June 23, 1929. In the dedication program, September 22, 1929, members of the Baker family mentioned were Daniel Baker, the president of the Hebrew Progressive Club and also a member of the building committee, Mrs. Julia Baker was the Vice President of the Young Women’s Progressive Club and Mrs Yetta Baker Rubins was secre-

tary. Morris Baker was the vice president of the Social Club as well as one of the ushers for the dedication. The Officers of the temple at the time of the dedication were President: Edward Berkowitz, Vice President Benjamin Baker, Adolph Berkowitz, second Vice President, Abe Barrish, Treasurer and Louis Gould, Secretary. In the Victory Issue of the 1945-1946 Beth Judah yearbook, Benjamin Baker was the president of the synagogue. Listed with photographs were 49 members of the Wildwood Jewish Community who had served in the Armed Services, among them were Cpl Samuel Baker and Cpl Norman Baker, two members of the Baker family. Adolph Burger was hired as the first rabbi. The first wedding held at Beth Judah was the marriage of Louis Gould to Yvette Blasany in 1930. The Gould family have also been pillars of the Jewish community.

The first Bar Mitzvah was that of Samuel Baker, the youngest son of Max Baker. Rabbi Yakov Hilsenrath was one of the spiritual leaders of the synagogue. “He was a much loved rabbi” says Carole Rubins. Beth Judah is the only active synagogue in Cape May county. There are approximately 75 families that are members today. The Bakers living in Wildwood today are the children of Yetta Baker Rubins: Lola Rubins Turner and Stephen Rubins and the daughter of Edward Baker: Paula Baker Goodman. At one time, until several years ago, the Baker family was one of the largest Jewish families on the island. The other two large families were the Konowitch and the Tenenbaum families. Thank you to the Wildwood Historical Society, Paula Baker Goodman, Stephen and Carole Rubins, Gail Hayman Cohen, Joyce Gould, and Linda Kaplan Dilouie for help with this article.

When the wintry weather would come to a close, Rebecca Mullen knew a leisurely life at the shore awaited her, beckoning her back every summer to her cozy cottage by the sea. Rebecca spent her winters in the farmland of Newfield, N.J. where she was born. From May through October, she could happily be found tending to her vegetable and flower garden, hanging out her laundry, or just taking pleasure in life’s simple moments provided by island living. As the proverb above states so appropriately, Rebecca lived well indeed. She was a fascinating and amazing woman. God blessed her with a full 100 years, even up until her death in 2012, spending her seasons between two beautiful towns that were dear to her heart.

Rebecca’s daughter Grace Mullen shared the same love for the shore along with her dear mother. She lived in Glenside, Pa and worked as the Librarian at Westminster Theological Seminary for 38 years. During the summer months, Grace would be found alongside her mother at their seaside cottage as often as her calendar would allow. She was eager to hop on her bicycle and head to the beach. Together, they loved to attend the Boardwalk Chapel’s nightly programs, and on Sundays they would be at their little church on Rio Grande Ave. known as Calvary OPC, where Rebecca had been a founding member. I recently learned of Grace’s passing on July 20, 2014. Grace was one of the sweetest people I have ever known. She was like an angel. I am grateful to God for having known Grace and Rebecca. I enjoyed their friendship and was blessed by their generosity. For the past 11 years, they so graciously allowed me to store The SUN by-the-sea in their garage. Each time I pull into the driveway to load my car with papers, I think of Rebecca and Grace and how much they enjoyed their tranquil summer days there. Summer in Wildwood is not the same without them, but I rejoice in knowing they are now in their heavenly home! by Dorothy Kulisek
