Lessons I Learned Happily by-the-Sea
There’s something very special about summertime at the beach; particularly here in Ocean City, N.J., where we enjoy our own personal rituals year after year. This summer, may you allow the ocean and the beach to teach you timeless lessons to carry you happily through and beyond the Summer of 2014. Here are some lessons I have learned… 1. Sunrise, Sunset, Surf The sunrise and sunset are dependable and predictable, a true gift from God, and God, being the giver that He is, is always there, in every wave, no matter how turbulent they, or life, may be. 2. Tides Tides change, but as anyone who’s set their towel down too close to those sea levels will tell you, they’re quick and they’re constant. Look to our ever-changing times and remember how resilient you truly are. Next time a wave (or a problem) knocks you down, try rolling with it; chances are, you’ll have a smoother ride and a better view. The lesson here? Just roll with it! 3. Water As the surf represents an omnipotent presence, the water remains calm underneath even if the surface is stormy. Life will continue to go on steadily, and a cool dip on a hot day can calm even the most frazzled nerves. Just dive in! 4. Seashells Shells are tangible treasures that can represent our unique talents and gifts. Conch shells are rarely found unbroken on most beaches, but a conch holds the sounds of the ocean. Some talents are like that: rare, beautiful, hard to find or explain to concerned loved ones, but well worth the risk of diving inward and revealing the treasure. Our lesson; to express ourselves in ways that only we can, trusting the quiet voice within. 5. Rocks The rocks along the shore can hurt our feet but eventually make them stronger. Such are the tests in our lives that teach us how to carry on. The first day on the beach we hesitate to go barefoot, we’re so used to having them in socks and shoes! To experience fully the ocean of life, we have to take off our shoes and leave a mark on the sand. This lesson? Leave your mark! 6. Dunes The dunes that protect the shore are like loved ones protecting us from wearing down in the elements. We need cushions from the power of ocean winds and tides. We need them—and we are dunes for them as well; a true lesson in give and take. 7. Gear Many beachgoers pack for the duration with coolers, umbrellas, chairs, sunscreen, towels , etc. All this gear can sometimes be a burden, who needs all that hassle on days meant for relaxation, reflection and a just-chillin’ tan? Sometimes, the less you bring, the more you enjoy. This lesson? You guessed it; less is more. 8. Breeze The sun at the beach can be very hot and can burn. A cool breeze is a much-appreciated gift. We need the cool respite to survive. We also need to be alert to the whispers in the breeze within our lives. Sometimes we have to turn just so to catch the breeze and capture the moment. We need to pay attention, to seek out what will revitalize and refresh us. Learn to get still, really still… 9. Space Personal space is prized space indeed in our oftentimes crowded world. Other people can crowd in on our carefully marked-out surf turf. Happily, there’s plenty to go around. As our kindergarten teachers once taught us; there’s beauty in sharing. 10. Lighthouses Lighthouses are beacons for anyone who is at sea. Within us, we possess a supreme and steady light guiding us toward our destination. The last lesson? Look to the light; it won’t steer you wrong (especially if it’s pointing toward the Sun!) I’m reminded of a wise, anonymous quote that states, “People show up in our lives for two reasons: whether for a lesson or for a blessing.” May these lessons, and the people you meet along the sandy way, become a beacon for you as you blissfully experience endless summer beach days, and may you pass on that “beach blessing” to others.... and, lastly, may this summer issue of The Sun knock your flip flops off!

After one of the longest, coldest winters we have had in years, it’s no surprise that we beach lovers have been anxiously anticipating maybe more so than ever, the warmth and refreshment of the summer season. At long last we finally see a glimmering blue ocean on the horizon and walk swiftly through the now hot sand to set up our spots among our friends by the sea. With sunglasses and sunscreen, sandy towels and coolers of water and snacks we come back to our beaches, reuniting with our old friend with gratitude and thankfulness that we happen to be so blessed to call this barrier island home. The month of May began with Ocean City’s hermit crab mascot Martin Z. Mollusk creeping out from his shell inside the Music Pier where he saw his shadow, signaling the start to an early summer. That weekend, the annual Spring Block Party kicked off on Asbury Avenue bringing out hundreds of folks on a warm sunny day, all filled with the fresh hope of an early summer as Martin predicted. From Great Strides to Heart Walks, Triathlon and Duathlon’s, Ocean City geared up for the 2014 season. With a turn of a giant key in the sand and a large crowd of businesspeople from our island present, the ocean was unlocked on May 23rd at the 9th street beach while Century 21’s John Walton gave marching orders for a businesspersons ocean plunge. And so, with one foot in front of the other, merchants from our island dressed in their formal work attire and led by Shelly the South Jersey Seashore Mermaid, plunged into a calm sea on a sunny morning. StandUp4SEALs “Get in the Fight Beach Challenge” began the next day and consisted of a stand-up paddle ocean challenge, a SEAL team-approved obstacle course, a
Kids Fun Run and a Patriot Ceremony honoring our veterans and fallen warriors. All proceeds went to One Team One Fight, the official sports charity program of The Navy SEAL foundation and The Travis Manion Foundation. June brought Flower Shows and Farmers Markets as well as Wonder Bear’s birthday bash at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and an invasion of jeeps and over 300 antique vehicles to Asbury Ave and the boardwalk. On the evening of June 11th, the beautiful girls of the Miss New Jersey Pageant cruised down the boardwalk in the annual parade which drew hundreds. From Aubrey Hepburn to Katniss Everdeen, the girls gleamed in their creative, nostalgic and modern outfits, showing off their shoes and waving to the crowds. Exciting surprises cropped up throughout our island as well. The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce was proud to announce the grand opening of some amazing new businesses. With a successful store in Stone Harbor, Lauren Beakly and Caroline Ranoia opened The Blue Eden at 8th and Asbury: a seaside women’s specialty boutique featuring items from local artists and authors, including “Hello, Sun” a collection of epic sunrises by The Ocean City Sun’s publisher Dorothy McMonagle Kulisek, organic body products, and Kut from the Kloth clothing. Ione Talese opened Artisan Body at 9th and Asbury: a new boutique offering artisan, organic and natural body products including hand-made soaps, scrubs, oils and lotions. This summer also brought with it a stimulating surprise for children in Ocean City that has made them jump (literally) for joy. fered more than 5,000 square feet of bounce houses, rock climbing walls, fun slides and food and concessions. The Boardwalk Bounce is just a jump away from the beach, giving kids even more options to enjoy themselves in America’s Greatest Family Resort. In May, Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian was re-elected to his second term as the leader of our seaside town and City Council incumbents Keith Hartzell and Michael Allegretto each were voted to their third terms. Peter Madden took the third-at-large seat as a newcomer. Congratulated by his supporters at The Flanders Hotel, Gillian presses on to serve Ocean City with “proven common sense” leadership. Despite major construction on Bay Avenue, businesses such as Bongo Café and Grill, Mallon’s Sticky Buns and Mario’s Italian Restaurant stayed open for customers. Visitors and neighbors made their way across the embattled street, cones and construction equipment to eat at their favorite spots. Although the road construction has been tedious and lengthy, a brand new road and drainage system will soon give Bay Avenue a solid makeover. Celebrating its 49th year of “Sweet Success” Rauhauser’s Candy on Asbury Avenue prepared for summer making their delicious treats and continuing a rich tradition of making mouthwatering delectable’s. Sack O’ Subs announced its purchase of the former Who’s On First Café at 1st and Asbury becoming The 1st Street Grill, Sack O’s OC Brewery serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with indoor and outdoor seating as well as pick-up. Over the airwaves and the Interwebs every Saturday night comes a dance party you won’t want to miss. From
7 pm to midnight, Ocean City native “Jam’n” Jack Christy broadcasts live from The Jersey Shore, spinning vinyl tunes from the 60’s through the 80’s. Joined by co-host, “Marvelous” Marv Melligan, beach goers can boogie down all night with these two veteran DJs and lifelong Jersey Boys at OCNJRadio.com While You Were Away we were also reassured of what we here in Ocean City already knew, that we have the #1 beach along our beautiful state’s coast. Coming in first place, our barrier island was voted best in the 2014 New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Coastal Research Center contest. Not only did our beautiful beach town receive Best Beach, it also won first place in the categories for Best Destination for Family Vacation, Day Trip and even Ecotourism. For the very first time in the history of the contest, one town, our town, has swept first place in all of these categories. The New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches Survey was introduced in 2008 to inspire pride in and stewardship of the state’s seashore communities while also promoting healthy competition between New Jersey’s favorite coastal towns. The partnership project, a collaboration between the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium (NJSGC) and the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s Coastal Research Center, has become a highlight of the state’s pre-summer festivities. And so begins a new season under The SUN in America’s Happiest Place. At last we’ll frolic again in the refreshing surf on sweltering days and dig our feet through cool sand at night as we walk the beaches to our magnificent brightly lit boardwalk for our favorite ice cream treat and a Ferris wheel ride. Here’s to more unforgettable memories, laughs and satisfaction for our spirits to treasure and immerse in on our favorite island paradise.

Doll House Row
“Give thanks for a little and you will find a lot.” ~Hausa proverb from Nigeria
OCEAN CITY, N.J. By Josh Kinney
Of course a doll house has a collection of little books about little houses :-)
Neighbors are friends in Ocean City’s “Dollytown”
Wovern Place, Ocean City, NJ
Her tired and weathered eyes peered across the shimmering bay from the backseat window, sitting
into the face of the woman who had grown up in her very house when it was originally built back in 1924.
comfortably between her two grandchildren, clutching the purse on her lap. The view had changed from what she once remembered but she stared on, imagining the same murky water lapping against the old familiar sandy, broken clam shell scattered shore beside a tiny row of colorful houses.
In the midst of the Jersey Shore’s urban sprawl, there’s a nook of nostalgia tucked along the bay in Ocean City. With a special ambiance on the block and a deep respect, love and harmony between home owners, doll house row takes visitors back in time for a taste of what has become a precious rarity in the modern era.
The car turned right onto Bay Avenue for about five blocks before disappearing into a secret alleyway hidden between beach houses, condos and a few remaining trees. There they were, in all their glory, the miniature row of doll houses.
“People can get lost in their own corners of big spaces,” said Tina Martin, who along with her partner Lynne, own the biggest of the mini houses on the row. “It really feels great to be together in a small place.”
From her window Laurie Nadolny watched the car pull up. She smiled and called to her husband upstairs. “It looks like we have more tourists today, Rick. Check it out; their license plate is from Georgia.”
No matter what the season, Doll House row never lacks in charm or tranquility
The elderly woman hobbled out of the vehicle with the help of her grandkids. For a moment she just stood in silence, breathing the salt air, admiring the bay breeze and soaking up the reminiscence. For awhile she stood while the others frolicked about and took photos of the picturesque cottages on Wovern Place. The grandmother’s intense gaze brought tears that slid between her wrinkles. Laurie walked out into the sunlight to welcome the visitors. She treasured her home, the unity of her neighbors and the memories she had made in Ocean City. Like the rest of the inhabitants of Wovern Place, Laurie took tremendous pride in the tiny community that reaped an enormous blessing. At the time she didn’t know she was staring
Rebuilt with the exact footprint of the original 1924 structure, Edward Brogna put a lot of hard work and care into his treasured seaside abode. With an all wood interior and exterior, Ed’s house is nothing short of a true, authentic beach house from years gone by. From the genuine nautical theme, a vintage map of the New Jersey coast in the kitchen to the old style books, fishing rods and lures hanging from the shelves, Ed’s one floor doll house with a loft is truly an original fisherman’s cottage. Inspired by the village community of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, Ed became fascinated with the history of Wovern Place, discovering that his home was built first and then sequentially down the row. The area was owned by Wesley Lake in 1901 before a developer named Harry P. Harding purchased the plotted and subdivided lots in the early 20’s for approximately $2,200. “Back in the first year of owning my home I attempted to find out why these ten small houses were placed on this little alleyway,” said Mary Jo Kerchner, a

“Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.” ~Anon.
Little guys can paint little houses. Here is Vincent Brogna hard at work on his family’s house.
Harry Brogna practices his big swing in his little yard
Wovern Place resident. “I heard all kinds of stories about them: one that John Wanamaker built them as a place for him to treat his workers for a job well done. Another that the larger home for boys located on 1400 Pleasure built the houses for the workers, and another that they were just built as weekend fishing cottages because they were bay front at one point.”
Mary Jo always said that these cottages appeal to special people. “And sometimes I wonder if I mean special in the fact that we might be a bit touched to live in such small areas,” she said.
In fact, the deeds on the properties go back to 1871 when the state of New Jersey set the area between 13th and 15th street along Bay Avenue for $1,448.95. A map obtained by Edward shows the entire area mapped out for all the homes in the back bay to be on very tiny lots all to be the size of Wovern Place. However, subdivisions of the land over time formed larger lots and homes surrounding the alleyway. While renovating their own doll house in the late 90’s, Laurie and Rick discovered a corn cob pipe and a Prince Albert can of tobacco in one of the walls along with old newspapers. Their neighbors helped restore the house making a project of great fun for everyone on the block to freely participate in. During that time, even with the place gutted to studs, Rick and Laurie would put up sheets around the bathroom and still have their family come visit. David, a Wovern Place local on the north end of the street relates the unique character of the homes to some of the evocative nautical back bay bungalows that used to exist around old Route 9. “They’re the perfect houses for just the right kind of person,” he said, sharing the same delight and gratitude that Tina accurately expressed as “magic.”
Laura Becker Solomon grew up on the island of Ocean City and distinctly remembers riding her bike through what she and her friends knew as “Midgetville.” One of the doll houses was said to be haunted after a previous owner let it fall into decay after losing his wife. Laura never knew back then that the “haunted house” of “Midgetville” would one day become her own treasured possession. She and her husband David kept and restored as much of the original house as they could, from the bedroom and closet doors to the porcelain clawfoot bathtub. “The comradery of the relationships on this block are my favorite part about being here,” said Laura. Laurie added that only once in a lifetime do you find a place where your soul knows it is where it’s supposed to be. From the number of visitors that ride and walk through Wovern Place, the village hidden in the midst of new condos and beach houses is something exclusive and distinctive, a mystery with scattered puzzle pieces found in old newspaper clippings inside walls, water line marks after storms, deed records in museum archives and in stories uttered throughout the decades. One of those missing pieces showed up in person one sunny afternoon, clutching her purse and leaning against the car. Laurie invited the elderly woman inside but she declined. “No, that’s okay,” she said, “I would just like to stand here and remember it exactly as it once was.”
Daisies... a white picket fence... an American flag at a charming cottage by the bay... Life is Good!
An original fisherman’s cottage needs a vintage map of the New Jersey coast and a prized catch.

Life is . . . a Day at the Beach!
This past fall, I took half of a vacation day from work in Phila. to go surfing in Ocean City. Based upon the forecast, I expected clean, fun-sized, 4-5 foot waves. Instead, I was greeted with large, overhead waves. The air was cool, but a sunny day at the beach, and I was comfortable in the 62 degree surf with a 3/2 long wetsuit. There was lots of whitewater and a challenge to paddle through the shore break just to get out. There were lots of surfers out (surfers don’t seem to have jobs when the surf is up), but mostly all young surfers with shortboards. After battling the surf and getting somewhat beaten up (sometimes I forget that I am a grandfather!), it was clear that this was a better day for my second hobby - surf photography. The afternoon light is far superior for east coast surf photography since you are shooting into the sun in the morning which is undesirable. Nonetheless, a great time at the beach. For those who ask me, “Where do you surf in New Jersey, there are no waves on the east coast?”, this photo is evidence that sometimes we do get good surf. Photo and Submission from Sam Ballard. Taken from his balcony at the Gardens with his telescopic lens. Look for Sam’s story in this issue on p. 22

The old familiar fragrance of a salty elixir had returned. Once again, the summertime scent blanketed the beach and swept across the wooden boards with powdery sand and sea grass. The long winter was over and Ocean City was starting to come alive with visitors. A young journalist had just finished his first year working for Walter Edge’s Atlantic City Daily Press. Having relocated from Philadelphia, the young man fell in love with the seaside island where he had spent his childhood summers. Little did he know that a connection he made as a child at the Jersey Shore would eventually land him his first job as a writer. Standing on the veranda of new The Flanders Hotel, he awaited his beautiful girlfriend, Emily. She was a housekeeper and waitress at the hotel who immigrated to America from Antwerp after World War I. She was working overtime in preparation for an important gathering with guests coming from Atlantic City, Wildwood, Philadelphia, New York and Chicago. Her humble demeanor, porcelain face and long black hair captured the young journalist the day saw her through a mirror at The Flanders grand opening one year prior. Making her way outside into the sunshine, she saw her lover stooped over a newspaper. He was re-reading his latest article covering President Coolidge’s visit to Atlantic City earlier in the week. From the lobby of the Ritz Carlton Hotel on the Atlantic City boardwalk, the young man had a chance to shake the president’s hand and ask him a few questions for his story. He had been a professional journalist for no more than a year and had already secured a brief interview with the President. Emily was proud of the exclusive piece and wished she had been there to meet Mr. Coolidge. She crept up behind the young man and
threw her arms around him, resting her head on his shoulder as he stroked her hair in the sea breeze. The two stood together and chatted, longing to join the bathers frolicking in the Atlantic before them. Suddenly a glossy blue Rolls Royce puttered down 11th Street beeping its horn. “The special guests are arriving now, I have to get back to work,” said Emily, turning back toward the elegant building. The young man watched as the car door opened, he immediately recognized the figure who stepped out. Enoch “Nucky” Johnson was Atlantic City’s political boss and had been present for the interview with Coolidge at the Ritz. The young man was surprised to see Mr. Johnson in Ocean City, a dry, family-oriented town as opposed to the well-known raucousness of his Atlantic City lifestyle. He decided he would stick around to see what he could find out about this “important meeting.” Nucky disappeared somewhere inside, but it wasn’t long before two more lavish figures showed up in the lobby. The young man recognized the one immediately as New York’s Arnold Rothstein, a Jewish businessman known as “The Brain.” The second man he was unsure of but overheard the name Capone. As more men arrived, their wives and children made their way up to the hotel pool for their Ocean City vacation. From a corner chair the young man shrouded his face with the open newspaper, watching and listening with tremendous curiosity. Meanwhile, Emily shuffled across the basement meeting room; a place she had not known existed up until that day. She watched through a slightly open door as another server poured bottles of alcohol into tea kettles. The stage was set for the well orchestrated meeting in the most unexpected place.

Ocean City Wave Rider Sam Ballam
Sam with his first surfboard in 1968, a 10’3” Con C.C. Rider (lightweight model with a removable skeg) from Surf & Sand Surf Shop located at 8th & Atlantic.
At age 63, Sam still enjoys the waves!! Here he is on his most recent annual surfari to Maui where he and his wife and some friends rent a condo in front of a surf break called S-Turns. This was the 5th consecutive winter surfing trip to S-Turns. It is a little nicer than Ocean City in the winter, and much warmer!!!
Sam donated his original Ocean City longboard to the Ocean City Historical Museum this past winter.
BY MEG CORCORAN Sam Ballam, who was born in 1950 in the middle-class, northeast section of Philadelphia, loved the ocean from an early age. His family belonged to a community swimming pool, where Sam fondly recalls seeing his first-ever surfboard (more appropriately a paddleboard) when he was about seven years old, spellbound as he watched one of the lifeguards paddling it around the pool. At the age of 10, his family moved to the western suburbs. Throughout childhood, his family rented a humble apartment in Ocean City, typically for a one-week vacation each summer. His love of the water was heightened, as his mother called him a “water rat” in the ocean, where he proudly rode his canvas mat (which he called a raft) and went body surfing (as taught by his father) for hours at a time. He found himself drawn to the surf, believing surfing was “in his blood.” He dreamed of one day moving to Hawaii, which he wrote about in a school report. By 1965, at the age of 15, he experienced his first “real” surfing event when he rented a stock Hansen longboard on the Second Street beach in Ocean City. Through trial and error (and a whole lot of perseverance) and with no lessons or guide book, he managed to just about stand up and ride a few knee-high waves to the beach. His love of surfing had been gloriously realized! Unlike his sports-loving friends, Sam’s true passion was surfing. With only one beach week a year, he satisfied his mid-1960’s surfing interest through subscriptions to Surfer Magazine and books on surfing. For the next few summers, he occasionally surfed on rented or borrowed boards as his obsession for the water sport continued to grow. In 1968, Sam acquired his first surfboard, a 10’3” Con C.C. Rider (lightweight model with a removable skeg) from an Ocean City Surf shop. It was the end of the longboard era, and although the board retailed for $179,
Sam in Costa Rica living his life motto: “Surfing through life and life through surfing!” it was marked down to $100 because it was off-season and the East Coast changeover to shortboards would soon begin. Sam’s first summer as a wave rider with his newly-acquired C.C. Rider was often in Lavallette, New Jersey, where the parents of a neighborhood friend had a summer home. In 1968, Sam realized another dream and made his first visit to Hawaii. His afternoons consisted of surfing at Canoes (also known as Boneyard) in Waikiki. Part of his dream had him living full-time in Hawaii, which he did from 1974 to 1979. He and his wife of 38 years return to Maui each winter to vacation and surf. He refers to his three sons, ages 32, 30 and 27 as “fair weather surfers.” These days, Sam and his wife are the proud owners of a 9th floor, beachfront, vacation home condo in Ocean City which overlooks the Second Street beach where he first rode a surfboard. At the age of 63, he swims a mile five days a week to maintain the strength needed for paddling. You can still find him riding the waves at that beach from spring through fall in what he calls his “home break.” In 2013, he generously donated his 1968 Con C.C. Rider (along with the original sales receipt and connected credentials) to the Ocean City Historical Museum
Left: Sam’s first surfing experience at the age of 15, with a Hansen rental board at 2nd Street beach in Ocean City in 1965 Right: Sam in front of The Gardens Plaza at 3rd Street where he nows owns a second home. where the board is exhibited in the museum’s window. Sam, an MBA/CPA partner with the investment firm Cooke & Bieler in Philadelphia, owns more than 600 tomes on surfing and has a room in his Bryn Mawr, Pa. home known as the “Board Room,” which houses a collection of 14 classic signed wallhanger surfboards. A surfer for over 45 years, Sam envisions that soon-tocome day when he can retire, spending more time in Ocean City, where he intends to surf until he’s 80. At that time, he plans to sit on his balcony, watch the surfers’ breeze by and do his surf photography, capturing each wonderful, watery moment.

“Out with the old and in with the new” seems to be a popular catchphrase in these contemporary times. We here at The SUN, however, being the old-fashioned bunch that we are, treasure history the way one cherishes a childhood friend, appreciating its value even more with the passage of time. In that “nostalgic” tradition, we happily salute the seaside cottages still standing, those that have defied the bulldozers while establishing their subtle yet significant place in Ocean City’s history. These beachside bungalows proudly displayed are forever etched within our seaside scrapbooks. Jam-packed, within these often filled-to-capacity dwellings, reside happy memories far superior than the limited space they occupy. The families inside were just content to be together in a place by the sea. Cottages like these carry the remembrance of days-gone-by, linking a never-forgotten past to an ever-changing present. Tony and Jennie Gesso have been vacationing in Ocean City since 1957 before deciding to purchase in 1971. Today, generations of the Gesso family enjoy their seashore cottage.

VICTORY GARDENS: The War Then and Now by Peaches Lukens
Anna Rice of Ocean City is learning how to garden at a young age.
Though World War ll was fought across the sea, its ripple affects were certainly felt on “the Home Front” here in America in the mid 1940’s. The country rallied behind the war in many ways as food and oil were needed to feed and transport troops overseas. Food rationing prompted the Department of Agriculture to turn to the American citizens to grow some of their food right in their own yards and thus “Victory Gardens” were born. Over 20 million answered the call. Vegetable gardens sprung up in backyards, front yards, on empty lots, in window boxes and even on city rooftops. Communities formed co-operatives and shared what they grew with each other, all in the name of patriotism. Ocean City was no exception. In 1944 Mayor Clyde W. Struble offered the free use of city owned lots for anyone who wanted to grow food. Ocean City native, Don Pileggi remembers the whole block between 5th and 6th Streets and West and Asbury (where the present day fire station now resides) turned into a huge community garden. “People planted vegetables in small little plots and shared what they had with all. No one stole another’s produce. There was no need for a fence. It was a team effort and we worked together. I loved to garden. Still do. I was in my early teens then and I enjoyed working in that garden effort. Even after the war, people continued to grow food there for a few more years.” During the war, The Ocean City Gardens Club turned their attention from growing beautiful flower gardens throughout the Gardens section of the island, to growing vegetables. Keeping with club tradition, they extended blue and red ribbons for the finest Victory Gardens created. Bumper crops of tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, string beans and radishes seemed easy enough for folks to grow after amending the sandy soil some. Margaret (Bishop) Shock, longtime resident of Ocean City recalls her own Victory garden at 1440 Central Ave. “My brother was stationed as a war cryptographer on Attu Island, the last island in the Aleutians. He was only ten miles from Russia. Though I was only in my teens, I wanted to do my part to support the troops and war effort. I planted a garden along the side of our summer home. My father helped me with adding soil and erecting poles for the yard-long string beans we grew. They were enormous! We grew tomatoes, radishes and zucchini and shared all with neighbors and friends. One time while hoeing the garden I found a foot-long black snake. I never saw a snake in Ocean City before nor since, but there he was.
We moved him and we didn’t bother him and he didn’t bother us. There were also the”hucksters” (farmers and trades people) who would come down the alleys in trucks to sell corn and local produce like corn. We surely had enough to eat. By the time the war ended though, I was busy working and the garden gave way to flowers.” Overall, the Victory Garden’s of WWll produced approximately 10 million tons of local produce. An equal amount to all commercial production of fresh produce so the effort made a difference during the war. Today Victory Gardens are making a comeback as a new war unfolds. This war is an environmental one involving the whole planet and its outreach is morphing into a variety of “movements”. Some are responding by growing their own food, right in their own communities and yards. Earlier this year, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its conclusion and warning to the world. “ For the first time, monthly concentrations of carbon dioxide topped 400 parts per million in April throughout the northern hemisphere. It is believed that the burning of fossil fuels and other human activity are producing heattrapping greenhouse gases warming our planet.” In 2009, a researcher in Iowa calculated that the milk, sugar and strawberries that were in his strawberry yogurt collectively traveled 2,211 miles just to get to the process plant where the yogurt was made. Additional miles were added in reaching consumers. What is coined now as the “local food movement” involves “locavores” who are seriously considering the “farm miles” (the distance food travels from farm to plate) and the energy expended via ships, planes, trains and trucks to get it there. Buying “local” produce, meats and dairy is one attempt to reduce carbon emissions. Farm markets carrying local produce, CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture), cooperatives, community, school and home gardens are literally sprouting up everywhere. Instead of food traveling 5,000 miles, it may only travel 5 miles or 5 yards from garden to plate as “urban farmers” are heeding the call for change. Another facet spurning homegrown food is the result of our own food under attack. Between genetically-engineered seeds, the infiltration of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, additives, preservatives and a host of added hormones, drugs and chemicals saturating our food, “GOING ORGANIC” is now a strong movement to keep food real and preserve seeds. Our food systems and way of eating are all mixed up these days. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease and
obesity are everyday maladies with staggering fatalities. Health-conscious parents like Lorie Rice of Begin Wellness Center in Ocean City are taking steps to grow their own food while teaching their children to do the same. “My kids love to garden. It connects them to their food. What they grow, they eat. We try to eat just plain old real food and avoid processed products. Rising costs of producing and shipping food have us trying to keep things simple and local. We eat a plant-based diet and here in the Garden State, its fairly easy to grow plants!” My family and I have also been traveling the path towards better health for several years now. My own great awakening to our food crisis (and my own deplorable health) began on a date with a vegetarian in 1976 where I was introduced to “natural foods”. But my true conversion came in 1989 when Meryl Streep blew the whistle on Alar. A cancer-causing chemical sprayed on American apples. Apples and applesauce and apple juice I was pouring into my precious 3 year old daughter! I read everything I could about Alar and the hundreds of pesticides we douse our food in and decided to turn to organic. None was to be found locally. We had produce shipped via UPS from California. We formed co-ops with other concerned parents and traveled to exclusive grocery stores in Philadelphia to find clean food. We opened our own store on 2nd and West in 1993 having waited two years for organic produce to become available for sale here at the shore. But things were changing and by the time we closed our store in 1997, organic was moving into supermarkets. Though it still occupies a very small space in the produce section of major supermarkets, we are making progress. The high cost of organic products certainly prompted many discussions about growing our own food between my husband Mike and I, but sacrificing any of our 12 shade trees on our tiny Central Avenue property was a difficult choice. Hurricane Sandy took care of that and last summer we finally had space and SUN to grow a garden which is now underway. Our very own Victory Garden! Gardening reconnects us to seasons, weather, seeds, soil, water, insects and restores something innate in us. Something buried. Ancient. Rooted. Simple. All the middlemen are removed. Its just you and these (extra) ordinary elements God created. Growing food and eating healthy is taking off. If you’d like to network with other gardeners, participate in workshops and gardening events, get involved in starting community gardens or your own garden here in Ocean City contact Peaches at 609-399-4411.

Ocean City’s Historic Hotels
LODGING FOR ALL
An editorial in the May 31, 1929 Sentinel-Ledger stated, “In the 1927 fire we lost about 25% of our hotel capacity… leaving the city possibly unable to accommodate all who desire to spend their vacation here. At least two new hotels need to be built each year for the next few years.” But the Great Depression and World War II virtually put a stop to new hotels being built. Guest houses and apartments began to take more of the tourism trade. Guest houses proliferated during the 1940s and early 1950s. The first apartment house built for summer rental was Ocean Court, built in 1927. The Sindia Apartments, opened in 1940, were the first to be built on the beach. Hotels with special amenities continued to do well, as did those that updated their facilities. Other hotels lost their regular patrons and began to slide into disrepute.

The publication, Ocean City, NJ Season of 1910, described Ocean City hotel life thusly, “Ocean City, most delightful of America’s seaside resorts…. No matter about the weight of your purse, you will find an attractive hotel where an airy, inviting room and wholesome, palatable food are to be had.The rainy day loses its usual gloom and dullness in Ocean City hotels. No one ever need be lonesome in Ocean City….It’s a place where people aren’t

afraid to make the acquaintance of strangers. Dances, hops, card parties, musicals and other entertainment held nearly every evening. Exchanges, libraries, writing rooms, game rooms, will enable you to find congenial associates and associations.” Apparently Ocean City’s guests agreed with this assessment, as the hotels saw the same guests returning year after year. Rarely did the hotels have vacant rooms, and there was a clamor for more hotels to be built. Between 1906 and the beginning of the Great Depression in October 1929, 23 additional hotels were built, including the Flanders. Some of these hotels were quite large: the Delaware had room for 400 guests, the Bellevue, 225. Others, such as the Luray and Ocean Call, were smaller. Room rates and available amenities varied.
A newly published book, Ocean City’s Historic Hotels, tells how the early hotels built Ocean City into America’s greatest family resort.

Ocean City, New Jersey, was founded as a “Christian seaside resort” in 1879. Soon thereafter, it became a vibrant year-round community and a highly desirable summer retreat. Hotels were integral to the city’s success. The most famous of these was the Flanders Hotel, which opened to much fanfare in 1923. It was built in the Spanish Mission Revival style and named after Belgium’s Flanders Field; today, it is in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to stately hotels, many smaller hotels and guesthouses, like Jernee Manor, the Castle Inn, the Brighton Hotel, the Biscayne, the Bellevue, Locksley Hall, and the Scarborough Inn, began to emerge as well. Ocean City’s Historic Hotels features the rich architectural and recreational history of this New Jersey coastal town and its many hotels. Fred and Susan Miller have written six Arcadia books on Ocean City. Fred has been writing about and collecting images of Ocean City since he came here as a summer lifeguard 50 years ago. While most of the images in this book are from the Millers’ collection, some have been loaned by friends as well as the Ocean City Historical Museum, where Fred is a past president.

Fishing & Cooking with George Ingram From the reports of local boat captains and anglers, the early summer flounder season has been very good in the back bays of Ocean City. The daily limit of five flatties, 18 inches or larger, will be in effect until September 27, although the ocean will be the best place to find them in late summer after they migrate to cooler water. For me, summer flounder, a.k.a. fluke, is what Bob Wills is to country music—still the king. Like most trenchermen, I love all kinds of seafood, in spite of the need for an occasional trip to the medicine cabinet for gout pills. Raw tuna in sashimi…broiled octopus…shad roe with bacon…skate wings in caper butter…fried calamari…Kumamoto oysters--you name it and I’m ready to belly up to the table faster than an osprey can plummet into the sea for a fish dinner. But my all-time favorite is fillet of flounder—delicate, white-fleshed, and versatile— accompanied ideally by a chilled bottle of ChassagneMontrachet (if I could ever afford it!). Even if you don’t fish or don’t have friends who share their catch with you, the local supermarkets and fishmongers usually have a plentiful supply of flounder. With that in mind, I want to suggest several recipes from two venerable cookbooks. One is The Provincetown Seafood Cookbook, written in 1976 by Howard Mitcham, a feisty chef who unfortunately is no longer with us. Anthony Bourdain, a former feisty chef who morphed into a celebrity chef, once wrote that he had a “deep and abiding fondness” for Mitcham’s tome. (Long out of print, this classic paperback commands a hefty price from online booksellers.) Yes, Mitcham was opinionated. “Anybody who would put ketchup or cheap tartar sauce on a beautiful flounder fillet should be burned at the stake,” he insisted. Some of his recipes may seem Spartan but, like this “Flounders a la Buttermilk,” they are designed to bring out the inherent goodness of the fish: “Cover the bottom of a baking pan with foil; butter the foil, lay flounder fillets skin side down on the foil. Take a brush and slosh salted buttermilk generously on top. Sprinkle
with chopped chives, salt, and fresh ground pepper. Cook in a preheated 350 degree oven for 10 or 15 minutes, basting now and then with the pan juices. Serve on hot plates with the juice spooned over the fillets.” (I would add that the baking time depends on the thickness of your fillets. A good rule of thumb is 10 minutes per inch. )

Add the shallots, half the mushrooms, and the fish, in that order. Cover the fish with the rest of the mushrooms and the minced parsley. Pour in the wine, and add salt and pepper. Turn up the heat to just (but not) boiling and cook for about 8 minutes, basting constantly. Remove fish to warm serving dishes with a slotted spoon. Add lemon juice and cook the mushroom and wine sauce for about 1 minute. Pour over the fillets before serving, and garnish with fresh sprigs of parsley.
There are hundreds of other ways to enjoy flounder. So get some fillets and start cooking. Just make sure to hold the ketchup and cheap tartar sauce.

It’s time to BEGIN AGAIN in the Happiest Place on Earth, where the Summer of 2014 is in full coastal bloom. The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY are taking their seaside duties seriously, as they watch over the sunbathers and Boardwalk strollers. The earthbound but starry-eyed summer cast quickly learns with JUPITER ASCENDING, there’s no better time to capture a glorious sunrise and a cool ocean breeze. Feeling uplifted following the sunny scene, the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES take turns burying each other in the sand while HERCULES, on a break from catching criminals, is heroically catching the biggest waves. Soaking up the sun while working on their tans, the big-screen players leaves all thoughts of movie premiers and red carpet entrances behind them, perfectly content to pursue the sandiest of trails through the sunniest of abodes. Before following the sandy trail leading to the nearest movie theater, please check your local listings for release date changes… Inspired by Pops Goes All American, a washed-up All-American executive (Mark Ruffalo) hopes to BEGIN AGAIN (opens July 4th) in the music industry with the help of his wife (Catherine Keener) and daughter (Hailee Steinfeld) while connecting with a singer-songwriter (Keira Knightley). From high above, our heroic, animated PLANES: (are enjoying the) FIRE & RESCUE (opens July 18th) show magically occurring during the fantastic Fourth of July Celebration, entertaining shore lovers of all ages. An alien bounty hunter (Channing Tatum) attempts to rescue a human janitor named JUPITER (whose) ASCENDING (Mila Kunis, opens July 18th), unbeknownst to her, from intergalactic royalty. Her lofty status means very little to her, however, as she prefers the ups and downs of the Ferris Wheel to the flip-flopping of planet hoping. During enchanting Beach Walks, there’s MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT (opens July 25th) for an Englishmen (Colin Firth) who becomes enamored by the fake mystic (Emma Stone) he sets out to expose. Fitting right in during creative Character Nights on the Boardwalk, Hercules (Dwayne Johnson, opens July 25 th) has second thoughts about avenging his family’s death as he cleverly blends in with his otherwise peaceful surroundings. Finding inspiration from the bizarre beings they encounter during Weird Week, the odd GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (including Chris Pratt and the voices of Bradley Cooper
and Vin Diesel, opens August 1st) are on a strange cosmic journey where they must determine their true life calling, heroes or hellions. Comprising their own familial, distorted unit, the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (opens August 8th) rise from the sewers and briefly skip their intense, CG-inspired voyage to partake in lighthearted Family Nights on the Boards with a beautiful reporter (Megan Fox) and her cameraman (Will Arnett) assisting them on their latest adventure. (Jeff Bridges opens August 15th) offers his protégé (Brenton Thwaites) a more colorful look at real life within their seemingly idyllic world during the picture-perfect Boardwalk Art Show. THE EXPENDABLES 3 (including Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, opens August 15th) encounter a new adversary (Mel Gibson) having three times the fun during the Inn to Inn Tours. WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL (opens August 22nd) for the record-breaking Spartans, the team must learn how to rise again with the help of their head coach (Jim Caviezel), who teaches them how to deal with their loses while loving the sport more than the success. As night slowly falls on America’s Greatest Family Resort, there’s MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT, illuminating the most enchanting view. Flying alongside the fireworks display, the PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE team promises Ocean City lovers a blazing, colorful light show they’ll never forget. THE (unforgettable) EXPENDABLES 3, meanwhile, are enjoying three crucial rounds of nighttime miniature golf, determined to rise above one another on the tricky mini course. WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL, the larger-than-life action stars forget about their competitive ways and are soon soaring along Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, amazed by the entertainment they’ve discovered. As summer heats up, THE GIVER of all things sun and surf bestows memorable fun all season long to those lucky enough to be spending their moments blissfully by the big, beautiful sea…

Rocking on my Vintage Cottage Porch by Simonne Barry-Soulière
H
ave you paused to notice how life surprises you with intangible gifts if you stay open to it? Before the sun rises on an unseasonably warm mid-March morning, the sound of birds piercing from my kitchen windows draws me outdoors. After too many foggy days in a row I welcome the change. Coffee in hand, I gently rock on an old but sturdy, white wooden rocking chair on the ground level front porch of my 1920’s cottage. This South Jersey beach town, barely waking up, lets me quietly hear the birds singing near and far. It is clearly Spring time. In the midst of the beauty on this bright morning, emotions suddenly overshadow me and threaten to take this moment away. With many responsibilities awaiting me, I dread the end of my favorite time of day, but remind myself to live in the present. As I settle in my seat, my senses heighten and I notice the subtle scent of purple Easter lilies that have just bloomed a few feet away. I remember planting them at least six or seven years ago. A pair of cardinals arrives for a brief moment. The red beauties crack sunflowers seeds fallen from the feeder that hangs from a low branch of the bare Crepe Myrtle tree. A tree planted some sixty years ago by a woman that once cherished this vintage summer cottage. The cluster of about eight slender stems that peeled during the Fall has left a smooth, slippery mottled appearance that intrigues both my sense of sight and touch. As I watch the pair, I notice droplets of water resting on the end of each blade of grass, which glisten like small crystals. I am careful not to make any noises that would scare away a dozen, local old world Sparrows and one red headed house Finch that take turns flying to the round feeder in front of me. The weight of the birds coming and going cause it to sway from side to side. As they crack seeds, it causes a splatter down below so more birds can feast at once. By summer,
some of these scattered seeds will turn into tall majestic multi headed sunflowers high above the wooden fence that shields the garden from misty ocean air and gusty winds. When the Red-winged Blackbird makes its bold appearance at the tiny tin roof feeder, the small birds chirp and wait at a distance. I clap my hands once to make this bully go away. This simple morning leads me to remember all the intangible moments that have blessed my life over time, and since relocating to live alongside my beloved ocean. They are countless. One is the beauty and promise of new beginnings that each Spring brings to my heart and seashore garden. It seems like just yesterday, but already the purple crocuses that surprised me with the first burst of color in February have wilted. Now, the sweet woodruff ground cover has pushed its way above the earth and spread to the left side of the shaded garden at the edge of the porch. At the sunnier front a few tulips already developed heads. I hold a deep sense of attachment to my garden. My hands transplanted the tulips in my three home gardens, beginning north of the border in Canada. Just about every perennial has announced its reappearance. Each flower, plant, shrub and tree grows up to tell a different story and is like children that you nurture throughout the seasons of life. Many of these green miracles once grew in Havertown, Pennsylvania under the love of my like-a-mother and avid gardener Cindy. No flowers more sentimental to her, than the purple irises transplanted from her grand-mother’s garden in Kentucky. Knowing her beloved perennials of years gone by live on in my garden, left my friend with a deep sense of contentment as she moved away. And how could I not reflect upon my pink hydrangea that belonged to my dear friend John’s beloved mother Millie, a few streets away. Tenderly grown from a broken branch and bestowed to me with just two leaves, it now stands three feet tall in her memory. Each new bloom reminds me of a special bond of friendship strengthened over the years and the love of gardening passed down from my grandfather Edmond and mother Delia. It seems that as I embrace this tangible moment, it leads me to remember past intangible ones. And so this precious and peaceful morning must come to an end, as I too must go about my spring duties. I leave with the comfort of knowing that if I simply stay open, new blessings will surely follow both in my life and in the garden.

New Jersey is stronger than the storm because the people that live here care about each other and we all have a heart. A storm can do some bad things, but people can do good things. Before the storm, people helped their friends get ready by putting up sand bags and putting boards on the windows. Some people maybe even prayed together that the storm wouldn’t damage their houses or their families’ houses. I was really worried about what the storm would do to Ocean City because it is an island and we spend every summer there. After the storm, people in Ocean City and other places helped to repair houses, take out wet carpets
and just check on other people to see if they were doing alright. One restaurant called Bongo’s didn’t get that much damage, so they were nice and made food for the people that were helping repair things. They did that because they wanted to help people after such a long day. A storm doesn’t have a heart, but people do. Even though God created the storm, he also created us and a storm can’t even come close to breaking people apart. So that is why New Jersey is stronger than the storm! Declan Malloy 3rd Grade

Meditation and contemplation are forms of worship. Whenever we draw ourselves close to God, we show our love for Him and our desire to be with Him. The beach offers a conducive setting to meet with God. Early morning sunrise and solitude or the dusk of an evening sunset provide time to listen, think, pray and converse without all the everyday distractions and crowds. These meditations are intended to be read on the beach. WAVERING: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” ~James 1:2-8 Life is messy. Trials can beat us up and break us down. But there’s no doubt, trials shape us. They test what we believe and Who we believe. They chisel out our character and the way we respond to life’s challenges. Trials can attract faith as we question the reality and presence of God and witness His provision in the midst of some difficult struggles. Many of our trials are of our own doing. Hasty, impulsive decisions send us in the wrong direction. We may ask God for guidance, but find we cannot hear His reply. Or we may sense His answer and it isn’t what we wanted to hear. We go our own way. James, the blood brother of Jesus, says we can ask God for help with our decisions and that He will not reject our need. God parents His children with unconditional love, mercy and grace extended from a heart that adores us. He has wisdom and understanding we need from Him and He is willing and generous to teach us. But we may waver in believing
God. In discerning His voice. Trusting Him. Waiting on Him. Wavering can allow Doubt, our arch-enemy, to settle in like thick, brooding storm clouds and we lose sight of God. Our past swirls round us and we consider the times we feel God ignored us or let us down. We question. We sink into distrust as the grounding of our faith shifts underneath us and often gives way to disbelief. Fears gather and erode. We pull back. We turn away. We wobble and waver. We become unstable. Our relationship with God is like any relationship. Two-sided. Trust is integral in any relationship and even more so in how we relate and interact with God. James likens our wavering to rough seas that churn and toss us to and fro. Such a state of mind is difficult to navigate. It affects everything we do and who we are and how we interact with God. But trust brings a calm within. MEDITATION EXERCISE: Sit on the beach on a day when the waves are wild. Observe how they well-up one way and then another. Their chaotic churn. Venture into those waves if you dare and lifeguards permit. Such a wash can drag you under. Push you around and turn you upside-down. The sea floor rushes out from under you and you feel swept up in an energy that’s beyond your control. The waves have no kinship with you. No mercy. Doubt, Fear and Unbelief are like such out-of-control conditions. They undermine our faith in a God who asks us to trust Him. Sit on the beach on a day when the seas are calm. The current’s slack. Waves rhythmically wash up the shore and slide back down with a little whoosh. The surface of the sea slick. The horizon like a straight-edge laid from end to end. Observe the peace and tranquility such a calm offers. Wade in if led to and lifeguards are present. Like a sea-salt bath, the waters swirl and comfort. Sooth and heal. Float on your back and let the waters suspend you. Invite Rest and Trust to wash over you. Through you. You are safe. Such conditions resemble God’s ever-present arms that hold you up. The swish rocks and caresses you just as God’s love surrounds and supports you every day...even in the midst of trials. CONTEMPLATION EXERCISE: Consider your “faith”. Examine what your faith is made up of. Liken your relationship to God with one of the wave conditions above. Which are you most like? How have trials shaped you? How has God been there for you in the midst of trials? Pray and journal whatever the Holy Spirit speaks to you during this time. PRAY: Journal or voice your prayers to God concerning revelations He gave you today.

Back to the Beach !
I could write a book about wonderful times spent in Ocean City. It all began in 1935 when the doctor told my parents “A vacation at the shore if possible and forget all the medication!” What a brilliant idea... and it worked! The Ocean City Sun is the best publication yet in OC, NJ! It is read and reread by all the members of our family. ~Mary Louise M., Vero Beach, FL

I enjoyed the Holiday edition so much! I didn’t understand why the paper turned upside down, but I finally realized it was a double issue. I enjoyed reading about Ocean City as well as Wildwood! Keep up the great work! ~Charlie Neill I just wanted to commend you on the concept of the double Sun magazine! It’s incredible! I loved reading about Ocean City too! ~ Dennis Flynn, Wildwood I’ve always thought of The SUN as being a warm and cozy edition to a world that often isn’t. I’m sure your readers feel that way, too. ~Meg C.
BY KIRK HASTINGS There are 3 things that I usually think of first when I remember growing up in The Wildwoods in the 1960s: the Beach, the Boardwalk -- and those great Beach Party movies with Annette Funicello! When I was a kid growing up in Wildwood Crest, those movies convinced me that everyone in America lived somewhere near the beach -- and that everyone knew how to surf! Didn't they? And was there a male human anywhere in the 1960s under 20 with a pulse that didn't have a crush at one time or another on Annette Funicello? Of course, she was awful cute as a Mouseketeer -but when she donned those tight-fitting bathing suits and romped on the beach with Frankie Avalon, Dwayne Hickman, Tommy Kirk and other teenage heartthrobs of the 1960s, we were hooked. She was the ultimate Girl Next Door; America's Sweetheart; the original Disney Princess. And the best thing was, she was just as sweet in real life as she was on the movie screen. But then the unthinkable happened. In 1992, Annette announced that she was suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. After bravely struggling with the disease for over 20 years -- always with that same hopeful attitude and a bright smile on her face -- she finally lost her battle with
the disease last April 8th. Yet for all of us who grew up with her, she will never be forgotten. All we have to do is slip one of her old Beach movies into a DVD player, and we fall in love with her all over again! The first Beach movie, "Beach Party", was released by American International Pictures in the summer of 1963. It costarred Bob Cummings, Dorothy Malone, and Morey Amsterdam, and went on to make a tidy $2 million profit. This film inspired a series of similar type "beach" movies in the next few years, released by a number of different movie studios. But most popular culture experts credit this particular film with helping to start the surfing craze of the 1960s. And Annette with popularizing the two-piece bathing suit! After all, if America's Sweetheart could get away with wearing a bikini to the beach, then so could every other American girl! This film was followed in rapid succession by "Muscle Beach Party" and "Bikini Beach" in 1964, and "Beach Blanket Bingo" and "How To Stuff a Wild Bikini" in 1965 -- all starring Annette and Frankie Avalon. Annette finally married in 1965 (to her manager at the time, not Frankie Avalon!), and after almost 20 years away from the camera to raise
her family, Frankie and Annette got back together again in 1987 to film "Back To The Beach" for Paramount studios, a spoof on their original Beach movies. A multi-city personal appearance concert series by Frankie and Annette followed this film, but due to increasing symptoms of her Multiple Sclerosis, Annette was soon after forced to finally retire from show business. But her many fans will always remember Annette as the sweet, lovable Girl on the Beach in those entertaining "Beach Party" movies. All accompanying photos ©American International Pictures/MGM

“Whenever I feel like exercise, I lie down until the feeling passes.”
W I Lwritten D andO cean City illustrated by Peaches Lukens
It is hard to imagine the unruly maritime woods, swamps, streams and vast rolling dunes that were once all there was to this desolate barrier island now called Ocean City. But wildness lingers. Remnants of wild-life remain here among us; tucked away under your rosebush, in the hollow of your Holly tree, under your bayside dock, in the eves of the garage, along the path to the beach, perched atop the water tower, burrowed in your driveway-our wild neighbors are close at hand and worthy of knowing a little about. Many sights and sounds were met with fascination when my son-in-law moved to this country and squirrels were one of them. Just as we might find monkeys equally interesting swinging through trees in other parts of the world, we take for granted these unique little acrobatic creatures living just outside our front door. Aside from birds, squirrels are the most watched wild animal by people. How can we not watch them? Their superb balance is a marvel to behold as they tight-rope walk across electric lines, leap from tree to roof to fence with the greatest of ease, dangle precariously from bird feeders, run headfirst down tree trunks and wrestle and roll over each other in tree canopies high above the ground. And we certainly encounter them almost daily as they attempt to dodge traffic. They seem quite aware of the risks of crossing streets as they start, stop, look, listen and then make their mad dash across! I’ve often witnessed a great amount of chatter from them once safely on the other side and can only imagine what they might be saying. Being a spunky, gutsy, good-natured little animal it may simply be shouts of joy having survived such a precarious crossing. So while we’re toting our chairs to the beach, lounging in front of our flat-screen after our Thanksgiving feast or trimming up the annual Christmas tree, the life of squirrels goes on all around us every day, year round. With their forest habitat long gone, they make due with what’s left of
our tallest deciduous trees where they rendezvous with mates, make their homes and side by side skillfully build their leafy nests for their young blind, toothless babies born to them in the spring and summer. They food shop for berries, seeds, nuts, blossoms and bird eggs among our trees, bushes and yards and strategically store their winter pantry all around our properties.Their playgrounds are among our parks, roofs, allies, driveways, lawns and gardens. Having adapted to urban sprawl as best they can, they use their acute senses of vision, smell and hearing to navigate life among humans. Grey Squirrels are the most common American squirrel and the species we live with in Ocean City. Robust, wide-eyed and neatly groomed the squirrel’s beautiful bushy tails are one of their greatest assets. Such a tail gives them phenomenal balance, wraps round them when they’re cold, shelters them from sun and rain and even serves as rudders when they swim, which they are also very proficient at. Natural predators of squirrels also surviving urban life on our barrier island are fox, raccoons, hawks and owls, but most squirrels are killed by cars. They rarely make it past a year or two. Five is considered old for an urbanized squirrel. As they live out a sliver-of-a-life that overlap our expansive ones, some folks find them a nuisance when they move bulbs or chew bird feeders, hunker down into roof soffits or dine on their prized heirloom tomatoes. Rather than making room for them by creating more habitat such as planting trees and providing food sources, it has become common practice to trap squirrels and transport them offshore. Please consider the ramifications for both you and the squirrels by knowing the relocation laws www.state. nj.us/depfgw/pdf/relocation_policy.pdf Squirrels are our little “monkeys” to enjoy watching, feeding and supporting as they too live out their lives on our beautiful island.
