the Sun by-the-Sea

“My only worry in the world, is the tide gonna reach my chair.” ~Zak Brown

from the Editor

. . . The first sight of the marsh meadows, the sway of a gull and the scent of salt air wafting through the car windows, all made me feel alive and peaceful again, like being welcomed back home . . .It was a return to happiness. There’s something very special about summertime at the beach; particularly here in Wildwood by-the-Sea. Whether we are locals or summer folk, we are all drawn here and something holds us here, to enjoy our own personalized rituals and customs on its sandy shores year after year! Just as the sky is so much bluer at the beach, likewise people tend to be so much happier and life is just more wonderful. When we have been away from the shore for a while, we have an urge to be here again. There is a sort of magic at the beach that allows us to congregate around one of the most profound of all natural phenomena: a line where the continent ends and a giant stretch of water begins. It’s where heaven seems to touch earth... It’s as though we are standing on the shores of eternity, where only a thin veil separates us.

Perhaps this explains why we feel so at home here. There’s something so reassuring, so comforting about this place. With our bare feet sinking in the sand as waves ebb and flow, basically on the edge of the world, it’s hard not to feel a primitive connection to all the generations of seashore lovers who have been drawn to the same edge... the same waters that have been here ever since time began. When we swim in the ocean, we do it, not just to cool off, as in a pool or the waterpark, but to commune for a while with its wild, eternal, mysterious vastness. The salt water and sunshine have a mood altering, transforming power. It’s like an altar (a baptism) at which being immersed is the most natural feeling of closeness to God’s creation there is. This summer, as you sit happily facing out to sea, each in your own blissful beach chair, digging little holes with your feet, The SUN in hand, remember the gifts that come from the sea~ mainly the gratitude that bestows a reverence in us that changes our perspective on the world forever. With another summer of The Sun officially upon us, my heart overflows with thanks to our readers, our friends, and especially our advertisers for their part in the creation of what some readers call ‘’a little piece of heaven’. I invite you to reminisce with us as we celebrate those sweet Wildwood days gone by, found in the stories and photos compiled especially for your reading pleasure by the sea. See you on the beach,

The seashore is our chosen home, where we are one with the dunes and the blown beach grass. While the waves may wash all our footprints away, we still keep a few grains of sand tucked between our toes.

What is a trip to the beach without a pizza pie? Our cover photo was shot on September 18, 2015, just days after our awesome & adorable models went back to school. It happily showcases the children of the Sam’s Pizza Palace family. A special thank you to the parents and our young, beach-loving boys & bathing beauties for making The Sun a fun part of their “after-school” activities.

The Feast of the Assumption

and the Blessing of the Sea Sunday, August 14th, 4:30 at St. Ann’s Church

The Parish of Notre Dame de la Mer (Our Lady of the Sea) will gather at Saint Ann’s Church to honor and celebrate Mary, the mother of the Church, on the Vigil of the Feast of her Assumption into Heaven. It is a custom in many coastal regions in the USA and Europe to have special blessings of the seas on the Feast of the Assumption. The custom originated in 15th century Italy, when a bishop traveling from Venice during a storm at sea on the Feast of the Assumption prayed and threw his pastoral ring into the ocean from the ship - and the waters were calmed. Today a wreath is tossed into the sea to commermorate the ring of long ago.

A gray, overcast sunset, or one where sky is green or yellow-ish green, indicates approaching rain. A red sunrise with clouds lowering later in the morning, also precedes rain. Corona – Coronas are small, colored circles seen around sun or moon. Growing smaller, a Corona indicates rain; growing larger, it indicates fair weather.

A morning fog usually breaks up before noon. Rainbows – A morning rainbow is regarded as a sign of rain; an evening rainbow is a sign of Fair-weather.

I lay my head in the warm, dewy grass Looking up at the night sky as hours pass On this night the sky is so clear it amazes me what is starting to appear My eyes see such beautiful and breathtaking sights The stars and moon make the sky so bright Oh how I wish I could be a star and fly I jump real high to try and take a ride on that shooting star But I am not able to ‘cause I am too far I close my eyes and dream of sitting up high on the moon I could probably get there if I could find a balloon I stare in the sky and what do I see Neptune and Venus are right there infront of me As the moon starts to go away and the sun begins to rise I’ll wait again until the next night sky to see such magnificent sights with my eyes

am a creature of routine and ritual. Take last summer. Most days, I park on 26th Street and walk from there to Harry’s Corner for an outstanding breakfast. One day, as I passed the soccer-kick stand, I asked the young man there if I could have a free kick because I had always wanted to try it but didn’t want to pay for three balls. Business was slow, so he nodded okay. I missed, of course – badly. I thanked him and continued to Harry’s. Every day after that, we went through our little ritual of me asking and him okaying. I limited myself to only one try even if he gave me the green light for another one. I sensed he got a kick out of my kicks, but I didn’t want to abuse what I now saw as a privilege. I found myself thinking about my daily kick from the time I hit the Boardwalk, and kept on missing, mostly still badly.

Then one day, I blacked it out of my mind, deciding to just let my body take over. My kick was much closer to that elusive hole this time. Hmmm.

17th Ave. NORTH WILDWOOD BETWEEN NJ & CENTRAL (609) 729-7290

Two days later, I don’t remember much about the kick itself, but I can still see that black and white ball disappearing through the hole. Dang! I high-fived everybody in sight. I think the kid was as happy as I was.

.com

Now what was I going to do for an encore? Try it left-footed – that was it!

609-523-2400

SEAFOOD / BAR-B-CUE

But that old devil mind intruded again. My kicks were all over the place. I tried the blank mind approach again, and got a little closer. Then one day I tried visualizing the ball going into the hole as I walked up the ramp to the Boardwalk and then put it out of my mind.

TAKE OUT - EAT IN - BYOB

Three days later, I scored left-footed. I was amazed. By that time, the season was almost over, so I decided to quit while I was ahead. I wonder how I’ll do this year?

“Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.” ~Cellist/conductor Pablo Casals

www.j ungle g ymj am.com This song is included on the album “Lollipop Motel” released this May 2016.

Summertime Santa

(c) 2015, Lyrics by Amy and Jason Didner; Music by Jason Didner What does Santa do in the summertime When there are waves to surf in the warm sunshine? Does he kick off his tall black winter boots And put on a red and white bathing suit? Does he play skee ball in the boardwalk arcade And go with Mrs. Claus for a walk in the shade? Summertime Santa down the shore Serving up treats in the ice cream store Riding around on his bicycle Away from the arctic icicles Summertime Santa, Summertime Santa I’m glad you’re on vacation with me What does Santa do on a summer day? Does he fly with a banner behind his sleigh To remind the kids to share their beach toys Does he play volleyball with nice girls and boys? Does he hang up his big red winter coat And take time to unwind on his fishing boat The crashing waves sound wonderful When mixed with Santa’s bells And the merry sounds of laughter ‘round the carousel

Imagine traveling around your home state with your family and are just about to arrive at a vacation spot that your kids have only seen pictures of on the family iPad. That cheerfullooking place fills your sights in a way that pictures never could. For the Didner family, the moment they arrived at the historic Lollipop Motel in North Wildwood, an official Doo-wop motel, they knew they had entered a very different time and place. Their threeyear old daughter reveled in the vibrant sights. To them, colors never appeared brighter; the splashing of the pool never sounded more refreshing and the doo-wop tunes playing poolside were never more harmonious. They felt as though they had walked onto the set of a 1960s Frankie Avalon movie, inspiring nostalgia for a doo-wop era that peaked nine years before Jason was born and effectively ended with the first notes of Woodstock a year before he arrived in this world! Jason and his wife Amy were motivated to write a song that would do justice to great family moments. They wanted the song to carry a message about the benefits of family travel – how the current, living moment, the “here and now,” is heightened and we’re less carried away by everyday distractions like cell phones and social media. Instead, we’re content to be in the present moment by the sea...

“Stories are the currency of our past, present and future. Without them we are bankrupt.” ~Anon.

Long Ago and Far Away By Bob Ingram

“Shandu came down from the mountains,” said Mama Gretel, “and he made White Bird.” White Bird was the cottage community in Negril, Jamaica, where my now ex-wife Suze and I stayed on our honeymoon in 1979. Shandu was a Philadelphia exhippie we knew who had helped build White Bird. Mama Gretel, all five feet of her, was our no-nonsense hostess. We had brought gifts from Shandu, which made us very important guests. Our cottage was as much lean-to as cottage; we had a kerosene lantern and pegs sticking out of the wall as hangers, a hardmattressed bed, and little else. Central bathrooms and showers. Jamaica was a hot blue paradise, a slow decompression from the hurly-burly we had left behind. We had no radio or TV, there weren’t cell phones or the internet. We were totally off the grid, as the phrase goes, spending the long, languid days, swimming, walking, biking, and enjoying

the tasty Jamaican food, goat excluded. We found hidden beaches where we bathed and sunned nude, just two happy people together. Almost every day we made the hot walk to Rick’s Café on the Negril cliffs to listen to and dance to the happy island music and sip fresh tropical drinks. I still regret not going off the 40-foot cliff there into the warm green water, a tourist ritual. We found that the majority of the Jamaicans weren’t the dreadlocked, ganja-smoking rastas in the reggae songs, but instead rather conservative folks who would shush loud talkers in restaurants and wish you a bright good morning. Most were practicing Christians, striving to live according to the Ten Commandments. Now Suze is in a condo in Minneapolis overlooking the winding Mississippi River and I have found my own island in the Wildwoods. I wonder if the palms still rustle at night at the White Bird.

“Surfing, alone among sports, generates laughter at its very suggestion, and this is because it turns not a skill into an art, but an inexplicable and useless urge into a vital way of life.”

The Meditation of Surfing

By Paul Venesz rrrrrrrrrrr

Rob Kulisek

I

’ve had anxiety and panic disorder off and on since high school. None of my prescriptions have been as effective at helping me deal as one of my longtime hobbies: surfing. It puts me completely at ease and allows me to escape whatever is on my mind for a few hours. I’ve seen a number of counselors, therapists, and psychiatrists over the years when it gets particularly difficult to deal with, and most of them, at some point, suggest that meditation can be helpful for people with anxiety. Conventional forms of meditation like Zazen have been hit-or-miss; attempting to not think about anxiety can be seriously counterproductive, and once you let the doubt get to you it snowballs from there. But I find all the benefits of meditation in surfing. As soon as my feet hit the sand I can already feel the weight lifting from my shoulders. And walking into the water, all anxiety and tension are gone. I don’t even need to get a good wave to feel relief. Just sitting on my old, waterlogged longboard bobbing up and down, forming a moving, wordless mantra, I can finally breathe freely. The motion itself relaxes you, like falling asleep on a subway car as it rocks back and forth on the tracks.

Paddling out, you’re literally fleeing the country. You leave the shore and all its stresses to throw your tiny self into the unfathomable immensity of the ocean, comparable only to the vastness of space. For Buddhists, part of the path to Nirvana is letting go of your ego and the idea that you are somehow separate from the universe. It’s easy for me to do this when I feel so relatively insignificant. Not a depressing, nothingmatters-anymore insignificance, but the kind that frees you from self-importance and the stress of living. Though one has only to go out at a crowded break to see that not every surfer can let go of their ego, it works for me. On a wave I’m timeless, I exist entirely in that moment and context. I can’t worry about what happened at work last night while on the face of a peeling right. And surfing is just plain fun, the kind of fun you haven’t had since you were a little kid. When I get a really good wave, I tend to give a bellowing laugh that I can’t control, an overflow valve for the boundless, childlike joy it brings me. At the same time, surfing is a way of challenging yourself. Unlike most sports, your only opponent is yourself. And it’s a challenge with a tangible yet fleeting reward. You can get someone to film your wave but once it’s over it’s gone, leaving you with only a memory of the feeling and an insistent desire to feel it again. In Toaism, the universe flows in its own natural harmony. One can find peace of mind not by force of will, but by yielding to the harmony as it exists. I see this in practice in surfing. You paddle to bring yourself in line with the wave’s energy, so that it will then propel you as it propels the water; it’s not the water you’re riding but the wave of energy flowing through it. Millions of people throughout history have found peace in meditation, myself included. For me, however, it comes not from sitting in the lotus position with eyes closed, but from the meditation of surfing. Next time work or other obligations make you want to leave the world for a while, do it- grab your board and go.

In loving memory of our friend Janet

6/10/19 - 5/17/16

Janet & Larry Brown were the 3rd generation who lived in the first house on the island.

An abbreviated version of the story that originally appeared in our May-June 2005 issue ~ photos of Janet with roses by Rob Kulisek

Every time my husband, son and I would pass by this bright, three-story Victorian house with the picket fence, stars, daylilies and daffodils, I would say, “I love that house! It’s the oldest house on the island!” I grew to love the house even more after being given a tour by its owner, Janet Brown, who was even lovelier than the house. An incredible artist, she lived in that house for over 70 years, since marrying her husband, Larry in the 1940s. Initially, it was their summer home. They lived the rest of the year on a farm in York, PA with their five children. Larry’s grandparents, Charles & Anna Drewes purchased the house for $500

from John Taylor, who built the house in 1874 and is believed to be the islands very first resident. Janet was a collector of everything, a doll maker as well as doll collector who belonged to the American Association of Doll Artists. Several years ago she went to the Mediterranean in France for a doll making session. Her remarkable artwork also included a series of dolls that appeared to be marching towards the Nativity. Janet, who sadly passed away this year, truly had an artist’s eye and a home by the sea that happily reflected her heart… I will miss stopping by to see her to give her the new issue of The Sun. ~Dorothy Kulisek

We pass by the address at least two or three times a week. The Victorian, 3 story house used to go unnoticed as it blended in with the other old houses along the street. Over the past few years however, the old houses have been disappearing one at a time. There it was one day, Janet’s house, it seemed to catch my eye. The bright,Americana colors, the picket fence, the stars-- of the fish kind, metal ones, Moravian ones -- hanging from the doors, the shutters and the porch... the daylilies and the daffodils, the old cedars, all screamed out at me, as if to say, “I’m the oldest house in North Wildwood!” When we ride down 1st Ave. my husband and

my son say it before it even comes out of my mouth, “we know, that’s the oldest house in North Wildwood.” I say it every time I see it. I’ve been in love with that house for years and now even more so after I was given the complete tour by its owner, Janet Brown. The saying “you can tell a person by the home they keep” is true, but Janet is a free spirited person much lovelier than a house! She’s an incredible artist and a wonderful woman. She greeted us on a Sunday afternoon as we stopped by for a visit and an interview. Janet has been living in this old house for over 60 years, since she married Larry Brown back in the 1940’s. It was a summer home for them at first. Their permanent residence was in York, PA. where they lived on a farm with their 5 children, 4 boys and a girl. Larry’s grandparents, Charles & Liza Drewes purchased the house from John Taylor. John is believed to be the island’s very first resident. He built the house in 1874 and later sold it to the Drewes for $500. The Drewes vacationed here at their new summer beach home at the turn of the century. Another bit of interesting history is that this was also the first Ice Cream Parlor on the island. Janet displays the large crocks (right) that Charles & Liza used to make their ice cream with. Sitting next to the crocks on the wide-plank, wooden floor is another work of art as well as a family heirloom. When the Drewes sailed from England they had just about all they owned tucked into this beautiful handpainted chest. Hanging on the walls just above the chest

are exquisite little paintings by Charles Drewes. He was quite an artist. (There’s something about this house that breathes art!) The house overflows with charm as we walk through the old rooms which were once the barn, the chicken coop and the pantry. Janet’s passion for life and for art are evident in every nook and cranny of the old house. She is a collector of everything! She says, “I have no more room to put anything!” But she finds it! She collects things from cookie cutters to wedding cake tops, from books to plates, tea pots, cast iron door stops, bunnies, paintings, quilts and more. Her most favorite collection of all however is one that she created herself. Janet is a Dollmaker and she collects lots of dolls, as well. She belongs to the American Association of Doll Artists. Two years ago she went to the Mediterranean in France and stayed in a castle for a 10 day Dollmaking seminar. While there, she was given a lesson to make a doll which captured a particular mood and told a story. Pictured here is the face and the hands of a doll who Janet intended to be “one of those peddlars in the streets who sell their wares.” She claims to be just a “Folk” Artist but her ability to sculpt such life-like figures might closer be labeled Fine Art, as if she had been trained by Michaelangelo himself! The mood she captured in this tiny figure is remarkable. During our entire visit, we were so taken back by the collections and the artwork that filled the rooms, that we were left speechless. Janet led us to the last of her collections before we left from our visit to her North Wildwood home-slash-museum. They were a series of dolls that appeared to be marching. She made them marching towards the Nativity. Even though she has yet to create the Manger scene with her hands, she’s created it in her mind’s eye, her artist’s eye. We are pleased to bring you the finest, local stories and to share with you those things which should no longer be our island’s best kept secrets. Janet Brown, the Artist. Dorothy Kulisek

MY HAPPY PLACE BY JOHN MASON

On Hunt's Pier with sister,1970

Four years ago, in 2012, I submitted a short article and some pictures to the Sun in the hopes of seeing them in print. I love the Sun and look forward every summer to reading it while poolside, on the beach or in my motel room. It truly is the best thing to read in the Wildwoods, always upbeat and positive, with articles that show I am not alone in my love of all things Wildwood. Well, the article was published and it was such a thrill seeing myself and my family, from the past to the present, in this great paper. A thought came to me that maybe it’s time for a follow up. I went back to our photo albums and dug out some pictures not included the first time around. I have been vacationing in Wildwood since 1961 and have stayed at about 20 different hotels and motels through the years, some of which are long gone, such as the Hotel Cromwell, the Blue Jay,

the Buccaneer, the Grand and the Fantasy. We now stay at the Royal Hawaiian Motel in Wildwood Crest and have been since 1995. As a child I would dine out with my family just about every night at such places as Zaberer’s, Urie’s or the Wildwood Diner before hitting the boardwalk. I’m glad to see the Morey family has done such a great job of mixing tradition with modern innovation on the piers. I loved the old piers of my childhood and have such fond memories, but the boardwalk of today is just as good, if not better than ever. I’m sure I sometimes ramble on to my daughters about where I stayed and what I did as we ride through the Wildwoods or enjoy the boardwalk, but I’ll bet they’ll be doing the same with my grandchildren someday. It’s hard to convey the feeling I get from being in the Wildwoods, but since you are reading this in the Sun, I would bet that you get it!

Although she lives in Montreal, Quebec, Anne Marie Bessette has been a fan of Wildwood since she was five years old and spending her summer vacations in North Wildwood with her family. She has fond memories of her summer seaside days, and years later, still believes Wildwood to be the best place on Earth to take a vacation. Although the landscape has changed over the years (the Gaslite Hotel, located on 7th & Surf where her family stayed, is sadly no longer there), the memories she created by the sea have never faded. She now happily shares that time-honored tradition with her husband Eric and their two sons, Zachary and Guilaume, who have become proud 3rd generation Wildwood lovers.

Remember those “high

quality” tiny-squared strips of black and white photos you once took with your nearest and dearest on the boardwalk? Before cell phones and “selfies” were all the rage, the boardwalk photo booth was the place to capture Summertime by the sea. Behind that curtain, facing that tiny spinning chair, friends & family would cram together for their photo op, often arguing over ownership of the four photos that would eventually drop down outside the booth. Sadly, the souvenir boardwalk photomatic photo booth is nowhere to be found. On our never-ending quest for all things Wildwood classic, we here at The Sun are betting many of our readers are in possession of those tiny, tattered memoirs. These photos were graciously sent in by readers who love reminiscing with the SUN, a group of nostalgia buffs who enjoy the reflection back to an era, that in retrospect seemed innocent, and wholesome and everyone seemed happy. Many of the old photos that fill the pages of The SUN came from family albums where little black triangular holders on each corner held them in place; some lay in shoeboxes or in bureau drawers next to old chenille bedspreads for years, or in an envelope from the local film processing counter. We thank you for taking the time to dig them out and send them in, some with their ‘Wildwood story’, we cherish them and feel very honored to publish them. Summer Vacation Memories in Wildwood by-the-Sea SUMMER hours 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM Closed Sundays and National Holidays

Visit us at

Wildwood Historical Society

3907 Pacific Ave. Wildwood. 609-523-0277 www.WildwoodHistoricalMuseum.com Summer memories, everyone’s got ‘em! My earliest summer memories go back to my childhood in southwest Philadelphia. Most of us lived in row houses and if there were public swimming pools in the late 1940s, I was never made aware of such a thing. However, we did have fireplugs, and when someone turned on the corner plug, every kid on the street showed up. My mom broke out my blue bathing suit with the white stars, and I joined the neighborhood kids luxuriating in the cool water until the local constabulary showed up to turn off the fireplug. My joy was heightened when my parents bought an apartment house in Wildwood, and I discovered Utopia in the form of the beach and ocean. My sister and I had our chores to do, but almost every afternoon, we could be found on the Rio Grande Avenue beach. What joy! We also discovered the Boardwalk, and arcade games like “Skeeball” and “X-Ray Poker” After a summer of saving coupons, I might walk away with a pair of plastic, salt and pepper shakers for my mom or a hand shaver for my dad. The rides were my favorite. I loved the “Caterpillar” located on Marine/Playland Pier, and while I was too timid to try anything challenging, I loved to watch and listen to the screams emanating from rides like the “Jack Rabbit” and something I thought was called the “Salt and Pepper Shakers”. I did go on the Jack Rabbit ONCE, but never had the courage to try the Shakers. In fact, on a night when the wind was blowing just right, you could hear the sounds from the hawkers, and the screams from the rides right into your bedroom. No central air conditioning in those days! Many, many years went by and I made my home here and I found myself volunteering at the local museum. I found I wasn’t alone in my precious summer memories. Everyday I was lucky enough to meet people who didn’t necessarily live here year around, but our island was their summer vacation destination. I would hear how they were now bringing their children here, as their parents did. I spent hours searching for photos of grandma and grandpa’s home where grandchildren and cousins slept on the floor, because there were so many of them, and a front porch that held more memories. We also searched our binders for photos of the rides that were popular when they were children. My own children grew up with Hunt’s Pier and the “Golden Nugget” ride. During my tenure at the museum I came to realize what a wonderful place I live in. This island has provided so many great sum-

mer memories for every generation. There is no end to the stories we have; the best pizza on the boardwalk, the best hot dogs on the boardwalk. Where do you go for the best cheese steak? Cinnamon Buns? One time I had done a piece on a local bakery. I asked if anyone remembered “Marsh’s Bakery” located at Poplar and New York Avenues. I received such an onslaught of comments! I found out they had “the best butter cake”, “the best cinnamon buns”, and every evening they had a 7:00 PM baking with an endless line. So many reached back in their memories and told me what made Marsh’s Bakery special to them. The same with a sandwich shop called “Luigi’s” located on the corner of Davis and Pacific Avenues. A gentleman by the name of Jim Monaghan, a former resident, and Wildwood Catholic student, was more than forth-coming with information about Luigi’s. He said Mike Sedotti was the owner and the “artist” who made every sandwich perfect. He also mentioned “Sam Finocchairo” whose family owned the Marine Italian Bakery, and was told that Mike Sedotti ordered the same amount of rolls every day. When they were gone, that was it, and he sold out every day. Sam also told Jim that Mike was the only customer who ordered the bread slightly under-baked so that he could toast the rolls to perfection in his pizza oven just before making every sandwich. And, he never made more than one sandwich at a time. So many good things to recall, and the Wildwood Historical Society can help with their collection of binders on almost every subject on island history. Under recent news, the museum hosted the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey, and it went exceptionally well according to Board Member Karen Bohme. Our Vice-president, Al Brannen has been busy all winter cleaning out the back room at the museum. As a result, they had a yard sale of surplus and nonWildwood items. They made a bit of money and very importantly cleared up some space. (For those that don’t know our local history, the “back room” served as the embalming room for the local funeral parlor at one time.) You should be receiving our summer newsletter very shortly. President, Kathy Skouras, does a fine job of gathering information and sending it out to our members. She also reported that visitor numbers are increasing as summer starts. You really are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t at least come in for a look. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. The staff of the museum would like to give a shout-out to our friend and long-time volunteer, Ron Griffith of North Wildwood. According to his brother-in-law, Bud Nelson, Ron is presently residing in an assisted-living facility, Victoria Commons, 610 Townbank Road, North Cape May, NJ 08204. He is in unit #115, and is very happy. If you get a chance, drop him a card. We all send good thoughts and best wishes to someone who faithfully gave back to his community. We miss you, Ron! Until next time . . . . . be happy and be well! Anne Vinci

The Gloria’s Wildwood Memories Robert and Sara

Joe & Maria celebrating their Golden anniversary

Joseph & Maria Gloria were married Aug. 28, 1954 in Ardmore, PA. Together, they raised 13 children, spanning 25 years in age, including from oldest to youngest, Angela, Maria, Joe, Loretta, John, Anita, Regina, Jim, Vince, Dianna, Rebecca, Robert and Sara. In 1969, Joe was offered a job with the state of NJ as a tax auditor and their story by-the-sea happily began. With the first 10 of those 13 kids in tow, they purchased the Lilac Court Motel, complete with a family home conveniently located on the premises at Cresse & NJ Avenues. In 1976, they sold the motel and moved into a large home located at 1904 Central Avenue in North Wildwood. Sadly, Maria passed away in 2010, followed two years later by her beloved Joseph. Although their family home was sold in October 2015, the happy memories they created there will forever live on, a fitting tribute to the Wildwood couple who inspired a legacy of love carried on by their 13 children, 17 grandchildren and counting.

Charles with his daughter Geraldine on right and young bathing beauty Geraldine on left and with Geraldine & Marlene below in 1945

arlene Hee fondly recalls her childhood summers spent in Wildwood by the sea. Her dad, Charles Roach, served in the US Navy during WWII on the cruise ship Olympia (the same ship that transported the Unknown Soldier now interred in Arlington). Charles, who was stationed at Rio Grande Naval Base, and his wife, Louise purchased a house on scenic Hereford Avenue in 1939 for $1100, with a $20-a-month mortgage Louise was worried about meeting when her husband and son were called to duty. Charles, who lived to be 94 years old, eventually moved in with Marlene, who recalls him asking her every spring if it was time to go to the shore and have Mr. Bradshaw turn the water on. He enjoyed his summers on the porch overlooking the Hereford Inlet, happily remembering when Anglesea Docks and a fleet of party boats were once there, with fishermen arriving in droves every day. The years passed, the scenery changed and Marlene became the memory keeper, remembering the boatyard, Jesse’s pier next to their house, and the many storms their loved home endured. Like many of our seaside dwellings, the Roach family home has stubbornly stood the test of time, surviving those countless coastal storms, including the Storm of 1945, while preserving all of its memories for the next generation of Wildwood lovers blessed to be a part of its happy history. Now, Marlene and her sister, Geraldine share their family’s summer house while carrying on that wonderful tradition begun decades earlier by their parents.

Louise Roach loved her home by the sea

Celebrate Summer with a book of Sunshine!

Dear Dorothy,

My copy of Hello Sun arrived in the mail. I was truly captivated by the beauty of the sunrise photos and the quotes that so perfectly matched them. The book is very inspirational and uplifting. It now has a home on my night table where I keep readings of a spiritual nature. After reading Hello Sun, I decided to order additional copies for friends, as it makes a beautiful gift. I also want to thank you for sending me a copy of The Sun magazine, I read it from cover to cover and back again and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Sincerely, Elena

When Mike Sciarra, started his journey he was fresh off the plane from college in Hawaii. His goal was to create a brand with a positive vibe that offers premium products at affordable price for people young and old. The year is 1969,and Mike has begun his journey to learn the ins-andouts of surfboard and skateboard shaping best on the North Shore. Mike watched other surfers and shapers in the area and took in every detail of the experience. With this knowledge, he made his way back to his hometown of Wildwood NJ, where he would soon build the foundation for the Kona Surf Company. 1976 is the year that everything changed for Mike. After renting a tiny storefront next to the Apollo Diner for 6 years and using the stock room in the back to shape boards, Mike made the move to a bigger location. He managed to save enough money to rent the old car dealership at the corner of Rio Grande Ave and New Jersey Ave. At the time he reached out to his lifetime friend Tony C. to help run his new digs. Also, Mike’s longtime sweetheart, Dee, came on to manage the books and also to cultivate some of the up and coming ladies brands in the surf world. With all of these pieces coming together, Kona began to grow. They now have an environment in which a grassroots east coast surf and skateboard brand could grow. Fast forward to the Mid 80’s, and that tiny retail space is now a bustling surf shop, considered a staple point on the NJ surf scene. A home for surfers and action sports enthusiasts of all skill levels, Mike worked hard to cater to the eager novice all the way up to the seasoned surf veteran. All of the best brands were represented here, and Mike stayed on the forefront of surf and street culture in NJ and on the east coast as a whole. A keen eye for fashion and a strong sense of community pride brought him into the 90’s and eventually into the new millennium. What was once a lazy Hawaiian afternoon conversation for Mike, has now become an east coast institution in surf, skate and athletic retail world. Kona is proud to offer their own premium line of apparel, accessories, surf, skate and SUP boards all of which stand for the quality and attention to detail that Mike is so keen on even to this day. The Kona Surf Company is a direct call back to Mike’s original days of hand-shaping boards for his buddies around the world, with their safety and satisfaction in mind. We have taken that same spirit of wanting to see a friend perform better at their sport, and ramped it up to become the Kona Surf Co. offering that you see today.

Summer Vacation Memories in Wildwood by- the-Sea

P

hotographer Ansel Adams once said, “A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.” True moments captured in coastal time take on a life of their own, often telling the tale better than mere words ever could. When Sue DeLapo and her husband, Sam bought their piece of seaside paradise on 5th Street in North Wildwood in 1955, they marked the start of the next chapter in the story of their lives spent happily by the sea. They shared their love for our beachside community with their children and future, Wildwood-loving generations, using the camera as the ultimate storyteller. Sue, who celebrated her 100th birthday in November 2015, is instantly transformed back in sandy time with each frayed photograph, gloriously reliving each moment while relinquishing their memories to her captive audience. Sixty one years later, Sue and her family continue to make picture-perfect memories in North Wildwood, doing their part to immortalize those Wildwood Days! Submitted by Angel Lynn Burns

A love story by the sea This photograph needs no words, it represents a love story and, as fate would have it, “Love stories never have endings.” They are as timeless as the eternal sea, where Jenny will be walking the shores of eternity with her beloved Alex forever in her heart. Alex and Jenny lived in Manhattan, where Alex was a professional piano tuner (one of his clients was Leonard Bernstein!) However, they loved their Wildwood days. They would reserve a rental every summer from July 4th through Labor Day weekend. Their days & evenings, naturally, always included a few strolls by the sea, holding each other closely. After five years of renting a condo at the Mali Kai, a condo came up for sale about a year ago, and they decided to buy. Alex & Jenny’s dream had come true, one that was sadly lost when Alex passed away on August 3rd, 2015; just three days shy of his 78th birthday. Now, a photograph of them walking together on the beach speaks volumes of the undying love they shared and the memories they made happily by the sea…

Alex & Jenny photo by Dorothy Kulisek, 2009

Cooking for my family is one of my favorite pastimes. My friends wonder why I bother when there are so many other options (fast food, take out, frozen and ready-made at the supermarkets). Besides creating recipes, I want my family to eat healthy and to always have fresh, clean ingredients. I basically cook recipes handed down from relatives, adapted to the season’s bounty from our region. The grandchildren share my love of good food, having been exposed to the creation of meals made from scratch since they were toddlers. My granddaughter once said, “Grandma, how come everything you cook, you make yourself? But I do love everything you make.” I involve them in baking during the holidays and am very happy they have become so creative. Before retirement, we had to travel from North Jersey to South Jersey via the Garden State Parkway during rush hour traffic. So, we took the lesstraveled, scenic “back” roads instead, filled with farms, horses, little villages, etc. We discovered farms selling fresh blueberries and were quickly hooked. I tried many recipes and because the locally grown made such a difference, we bought a few dozen baskets and froze them quickly to use the rest of the year. It is still a tradition, and as soon as blueberry season comes around, we buy enough to last until the next season and fill the freezer. We are lucky to also have a delicious peach crop right here in New Jersey, with so many peach trees growing from North to South Jersey. Here is a favorite recipe using both fruits:

1. Combine flour and salt in bowl. Cut in shortening, mixture will resemble coarse meal. 2. Add water slowly, mix with fork until mixture begins to cling together. Turn into a ball 3. Flatten into 2 discs and and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for about 3 hours. 4. Preheat oven to 425 F. Remove one disc from refrigerator and roll into a 12" circle, place in a ten inch pie-pan, crimp the dough around the rim. Line the bottom of the dough with a circle of parchment paper and cover with pie weights. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove the weights and paper, cool on rack. Filling: 2 cups fresh blueberries (washed and drained) 3/4 cups sugar 3 cups fresh peaches (peeled and sliced) 3 tbsp cornstarch 1/2 teas. Lemon zest. 1/2 teas. Cinnamon 1. Gently toss all ingredients together in a bowl. Pour into baked pie crust 2. Remove the other disc from refrigerator and on a floured board roll, into a thin circle. Using a pastry cutter, slice into 1" strips. Place strips on filling in a lattice pattern. Crimp the edges on to the rim. 3. Lightly beat 1 egg and brush the lattice. Sprinkle with 1 tablspoon of sugar 4. Bake on middle shelf of a 375° F. oven for about 45 mins or until crust is golden brown and the pie filling bubbles up. Cool. Serve at room temperature. We usually brew a pot of coffee and sit on the front porch with the pie and coffee and discuss the happenings of our day at the beach. Bon Appetit!

Art, Music & History of ST. SIMEON’S by-the-Sea by Virginia O. Wood, Researcher, St. Simeon’s by-the-Sea Parish History Committee

St. Simeon’s at Maple & Pacific Ave., 1901

TWildwood, here are 12 churches and 1 synagogue In NJ. These houses of worship have

artistic expressions in the form of stained glass windows. Our church, St. Simeon’s by-theSea, located at 2502 Central Avenue in North Wildwood, has one of the most unique sets of these beautiful and expressive displays. Since 1898, Episcopal prayer book services were held in various locations until July 1901, when the first church building, located at Maple and Pacific Aves., was completed. The growth of the congregation and the need for expanded parking led the church governing body (vestry) to purchase the Kenney property located on Central Ave. between 25th and 26th streets. In June 1975, the congregation was able to attend services in the new building.

St. Simeon’s at 2502 Central Ave., today

Stained glass windows located in St. Simeon’s depicting the life of Christ. (Left to right) The Annunciation, the Nativity and the Transfiguration The first of our stained glass windows was given and installed in 1917 in memory of the founding rector and is a depiction of the Holy Name Day of Jesus. During the decade that encompassed our 50th anniversary (1956), members of our parish gave a series of windows that depict the “Good News of Jesus Christ’, the Gospel. These windows were moved from the original church to the new church building. Our church doors are also stained glass and in memory of loved ones. Of the 14 windows telling of the life of Jesus, 11 are signed by the Austrian born artist Valentine D’Ogries. St. Simeon’s was fortunate

to engage his talents to create our church’s series of windows. Other windows in our church were done by Willett Stained Glass Studio. The Baut Studio was engaged to do the doors of the new church. Music became an integral part of the worship service. The present pipe organ may be the oldest pipe organ in Cape May County. The console was made by Klann Organ Co. of Virginia. This organ console and its pipes were moved from the former church. Time, a leaky roof and wear and tear have taken a toll, so we are working toward restoring this wonderful instrument.

A church committee has been approved to hold a series of tours and concerts to benefit the “Organ Restoration Fund.” Tours of our artistic stained glass windows will be held on Saturdays beginning July 16 and weekly thereafter through September 27th, followed by a brief piano concert. The program on Saturday will take place from 11 AM - 12 noon. A ‘free will’ offering for the benefit of the ‘Organ Restoration Fund’ will be taken. St. Simeons’s will also be holding weekly piano concerts July 20th through September 14th from 7PM to 8PM with “world class” concert pianist Milla Smith. We at St. Simeon’s are excited about these upcoming summer activities and hope that you will join us.

“Life is too big to walk it alone.” ~follow The Way

Walking The Wildwood Way Pamela & Donald Grimme Walk the Camino de Santiago Submitted by Pamela Grimme, edited by Meg Corcoran

Adorable young Pamela with her mother on the Wildwood Boardwalk

Several years ago, Pamela Grimme

and her husband Donald saw the movie, The Way, starring Martin Sheen and written by his son, Emilio Estevez. The movie revolves around a walking pilgrimage to a Cathedral in Spain where the remains of St. James the Apostle are entombed. It is a world-renowned journey known as El Camino de Santiago. The story inspired Pamela to take her own similar journey, despite physical challenges and the protests of her nay saying husband. Fast forward three years later and after many prayers, half-hearted practicing and a pair of one hundred dollar sneakers (the most she ever spent), the couple joined a group of ten, including their pastor in Cinnaminson, NJ, on their very own walking pilgrimage in Spain, never letting their age deter their once-in-alifetime-adventure. Happily, her practicing included a nostalgic walk through the seashore town she grew up in, inspiring endless memories along the sandy way. Pamela recalled walking from Wildwood Crest to the edge of Anglesea and back (her less-determined husband quit halfway :-), which equaled a distance of about 12 miles, her longest achievement to date. It gave her the confidence to tackle those upcoming 14-mile days in Spain. She savored her long, seaside trek as she fondly reminisced, remem-

bering a Saturday matinee where once stood the Shore and Casino theaters, the Boardwalk, Kohr’s Custard stand and a Merry-Go-Round complete with brass ring! A walk along Sunset Lake to Park Blvd. inspired fond thoughts of long-gone aunts and uncles, one on each of the four corners of Ottens Harbor. As an only child, Pamela was fortunate to have so many cousins condensed into a few beach blocks. Nostalgia flooded her senses when remembering her Uncle Sam’s barber shop and her fun times there. Across the street is where she enjoyed a slice of pizza and an orange soda at Victoria’s Restaurant (now Breuss Plumbing). Her Uncle Louie could be counted on for a nickel to buy a Tastykake at the American Store. On the next block, Russo’s Gingham Club proudly stood for 86 years. Pamela remembered visits with her Aunt Liz behind the restaurant, where handouts were frequently given to her and her widowed mother. Among her many cousins was Liz’s son, Joseph, so well known and loved in town that the Ferris Wheel was lit and spinning on his birthday (in the middle of winter). Although Russo’s Restaurant is gone, those long-held memories remain. On another walk through the same neighborhood of her youth, Pamela marveled at the beautiful homes and

Pamela & Donald have walked a lifetime of beautiful memories together. May they continue to be blessed in their pilgrimage for years to come. condos now residing there with flourishing gardens where once stood tired shacks belonging to fishermen struggling to make a living during the winter. Her grandfather, who emigrated from Italy to Philadelphia and eventually settling in Wildwood, was one of those struggling fishermen. Two of his sons, Tony and Mike, her mother’s brothers, followed in his footsteps, living in this verdant valley of relatives. Yet another brother operated a nightclub, the Golden Dragon, featuring famous black entertainers of the times. He later became a tax collector, motel owner and well-known Wildwood High School Booster Association leader. His son, Dom, aka Cappy, who was close in age to Pamela, was her favorite cousin. His mother, who made the best cookies, holds the honor of being the first non-Italian to marry into the family. Cappy is still a fixture on Wildwood’s Boardwalk every summer, supervising the clean-up crew for the Boardwalk Special Improvement Association. Walking the Boardwalk made those practice-miles fly by, as did seeing the crowded t-shirt shops. Another day and a change of itinerary (north to south) led to the magnificent Hereford Inlet Lighthouse & Gardens and the beautiful median strip flowers along Central Avenue, then past Wildwood Catholic High School, where Pamela first taught

after graduation. Every August 14th on the Assumption, Pamela and her daughter walk to the water’s edge for the annual Blessing of the Sea. On August 14, 2015, nearly a year after Pamela’s life-altering pilgrimage, she and her daughter felt privileged to talk with the Bishop of Camden, at which time Pamela’s daughter asked the Bishop to bless her mother because, “she’s old and I’m afraid she won’t make it.” The Bishop laughingly obliged. Lest we forget, this scenic, unforgettable Wildwood journey was all in preparation for that 72-mile-5-and-a-half-day walk, the last leg of El Camino, about 100 kilometers. Pamela and Don proudly accomplished their pilgrimage, finishing September 29, 2014. She referred to it as a fabulous, exhausting, inspirational, memorable, rewarding experience and a dream realized-an amazing feat at any age but for those two seniors, a gargantuan task. On that final day, walking those last two and a half miles into the courtyard of the cathedral with thousands of other pilgrims, the church bells were ringing, calling everyone to the noon Mass and finalizing a memory never to be forgotten, one proudly done for their four children and ten grandchildren (... all with a copy of The Sun tucked safely in their backpack).

While Dylan Jurusz has spent nearly every summer at his family’s vacation home in N. Wildwood, Deanna Giordano has only been spending summers here for the past 3 years. Little did she know that her shore days would so significantly change her life. She quickly formed a deep connection to the beach, ocean, and all of the people who reside here, valuing the quaint charisma our small town radiates. Dylan and Deanna love the ocean, and surfing has made them appreciate the Wildwood vibe even more. Their photos of the beach and surfing serve as the ultimate form of artistic expression. Through their photography, they’ve poignantly captured those memorable summer days and their love of Wildwood by the sea.

Simple Seaside Fun!

Summer of 1960 on Champagne Island Mimi McMonagle Pond getting her tan on

It’s been wisely said that for everything there is a season. Summer, especially one spent seaside, epitomized everything good…it was a time for devouring fresh fruit and corn on the cob, for sitting on the porch and playing games…a time for sinking into powdery sand on Wildwood’s infamous beach…for playing in the surf until dusk…for losing track of time…for living in bathing suits and flip flops…a time for appreciating long sunlit days….for making time for beach & Boardwalk…for crabbing and fishing, surfing and bicycle riding…a time when hot dogs, pizza, popsicles and ice cream qualified for a meal….when a hard day’s work consisted of rounds of miniature golf and skee ball….a time when there was no bedtime! When cousins galore could be found sleeping in the attic or the screened-in porch in a cozy cottage in Wildwood... Seashore stories live in our memories forever; we pass them down, generation to generation, hoping that each new generation will one day have happy seashore memories of their own to look back on. Summer was our time…it was a season that personified life in its simplest form….

Getsinger Memories

WILDWOOD BY-THE-SEA, N.J. Although the picture-perfect Wildwood landscape has seen its share of changes throughout the years, it’s comforting to know that some things remain the same. Amidst the beautiful townhouses and condos finding their place in town year after year, the longrunning Getsinger Apartments, with 2nd generation owner Maryann Getsinger efficiently at the helm, has remained true to its deep-seated seaside roots. In 1922, at the young age of 27, her wise father, Jim Getsinger, of Wildwood Lumber Company, had the foresight to bravely build a house that could weather the change in time, while welcoming generations of Wildwood lovers to a treasured haven so close to the sea.

“We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun...”~Seasons in the Sun

The Crabber by Gary Pizzuto

The crabber was a dream. A bucket

list dream I had in June of this year. At least that’s what I thought when I woke up the morning I first sketched him. The chainsaw carver Brian Ackley from Ackmonster Chainsaw Art was a man of vision. He had to be because I am no artist. He gave my simple sketch of The Crabber a life of his own. Honestly, I didn’t know the life he would take on. Over the weeks that I have gotten to know The Crabber, he has become more than a dream. He is a memory. A streaming bucket full of memories. I remember as a kid my pop driving the family to Wildwood for a one or two week motel summer vacation. I can’t remember what motel or even if it was the same motel but every summer we went to The Wildwoods. Mom and my sister went to the beach with umbrellas, chairs and a cooler full of cold drinks and lunch. Pop and I went to the beach too. That’s where the memories begin. Pop wadded into the surf with a conventional reel attached to his 12’ long surf rod. Pop never used a spinning reel and I never mastered his conventional reel. He would drive his metal sand spike rod holder into the sand along the waters edge and drop down his bucket. Back then we didn’t have empty spackle buckets. It was just an old bucket with slots cut in the top to hold whatever hooks he was using with a rag tied to the handle. A handful of 4 ounce pyramid shaped weights in the bottom held the bucket to the sand. His bait was clam or squid and pop was real particular about how I cut the bait to fit the hook. Cutting up clam and squid for bait as a kid is the reason that today at 67 years old I still don’t eat clams casino or calamari. In my

mind it’s bait and you are not supposed to eat bait. Did pop catch anything fishing the Wildwood surf? In my memory he did, at least a sand shark. I was 11 or 12 when pop got the 1959 black Chevy station-wagon. He would take me and the cousins crabbing, two locations stick out. The first was Rt 47 south just past the parkway overpass. What fun we all had trying to walk in the muck along Rt 47 with two or three crab traps and a handful of crabbing hand lines. No, I don’t eat crabs either! It was so much fun my own kids share the same memory today minus the 1959 Chevy wagon. The other location I remember is across the street from what is now Two Mile Landing. I am not sure but I think back then there was a set of pilings or a small pier we sat on so we could drop our crab lines into the water. In 1977 dad was able to buy his retirement home in the Wildwood Villas and sadly he didn’t get to enjoy it long enough. When my dad died in the 1990’s surf fishing for me just wasn’t the same. After his death I took one last surf fishing adventure as a way to rekindle a bond and at the same time say goodby to my pop. Early one Saturday morning I parked at Cape May Point where you can still see the sunken concrete ship because the parking area at Higgbees Beach was closed. I walked up the beach to the jetties along the canal. I spent four hours alone fishing and talking to my dad. On the walk back to the car I learned the rumors I had heard were true, Higgbees Beach is or was a nudist beach. What an awkward moment to be the only one who actually had clothes on walking through a crowd of naked people carrying fishing gear. My mom in her mourning had a good laugh that day when I told her my fishing story. Soon after that fishing adventure I hung pop’s surf rod outside over the door to the fishing shed. Twenty-two years later what’s left of it still hangs from its rusty hooks. It’s a welcome reminder of the days I spent, just a kid and his dad, fishing the Wildwood and Cape May surf. Four years ago I had to take down two oak trees on the Villas property. The one close to the street I left as an 8 foot stump. I didn’t know then what it would be. Like I said, in June I thought it was just a bucket list dream. Now I know the memory and who The Crabber is. It’s the kid whose “pop” took him crabbing in the black 1959 Chevy station-wagon.

Meg the Movie Buff Goes to Hollywood

Chill at the Hottest Place in Wildwood Overlooking Historic Otten’s Harbor

2016 summer MOVIE GUIDE

by Meg Corcoran

Summer has finally made its way to town, and our summer stars, led by The

BFG, have promised a Big, Friendly Giant adventure, where the Ghostbusters vow to obliterate all foreign entities (and tan lines) in exchange for fun in the sun. Multitasker Jason Bourne is always in hero mode, ready to surf and save beachgoers from unpredictable tides and uninspired tales. The Secret Life of Pets reveals a fierce Frisbee competition, where thick sand and constant paparazzi only slightly inhibit them. Pete’s Dragon, meanwhile, hovers above them all, enjoying the most scenic view and wishing summer would never end. Before taking in the scenic sights at your neighborhood movie theater, please check your local listings for release changes…

The BFG (Mark Rylance, opened July 1st) becomes fast friends with 10-year-old Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), who introduces the gentle giant to the wonders of Christmas in July with Santa Claus. Animals are running amok through the streets of New York, where The Secret Life of Pets (opens July 8th) exposes the clandestine actions of our furry friends (including the voices of Kevin Hart and Louis C.K.), who covertly enjoy the treats at the first Beach Bacon Festival. The all-girls Ghostbusters (including Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, opens July 15 th) find former college friends turned scientists called into duty when an assortment of poltergeists invade New York City before heading seaside for a spin on the Ghost Ship. When the USS Enterprise is destroyed by aliens, Captain Kirk, Spock (Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto) and crew are stranded and at war with a new enemy (Idris Elba), forcing our Star Trek Beyond (opens July 22nd) their previous limitations and far away from Concerts Under the Stars. During the Ice Age: (a) Collision Course (opens July 22nd) is occurring as an asteroid heads toward Earth, leaving the herd (including the voices of Ray Romano and John Leguizamo) on a journey through exotic, animated lands where they savor exotic, colorful fare at the Downtown Wildwood Farmer’s Market.

Boogie Board Races are a welcomed breeze for Jason Bourne (Matt Damon, opens July 29th), as the superspy finds himself in the Canary Islands facing new threats. Also stars Tommy Lee Jones. The Wildwood Tattoo Beach Bash offers a fun distraction for the supervillains who comprise The Suicide Squad (including Will Smith and Jared Leto, opens August 5th), as DC’s comic-book villains accept a suicidal government assignment. A remake of the 1977 classic tells the tale of a woodcarver (Robert Redford) who, clearly motivated by FREE Movies at the Beach, entertains local kids with stories about 10-year-old orphan boy Pete (Oakes Fegley) and his best friend, a sweet dragon named Elliot. The merchant’s daughter (Bryce Dallas Howard) believes they are just tall tales until she meets Pete’s Dragon (opens August 12th). It’s 1940s New York, and socialite Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep, opens August 12th) aspires to become an opera singer. Lacking talent, her paramour (Hugh Grant) uses money and status to stage grand performances unlikely to be found at the Wildwood Talent Showcase. After being sentenced into slavery by his adopted brother (Toby Kebbell), falselyaccused Ben Hur (Jack Huston, opens August 19th) seeks revenge, culminating in a deadly chariot race, instead of a peaceful spin on the lively Merry Go Round. Night ultimately falls and our Star Trek Beyond the sea leads to a boardwalk stroll that illuminates tranquil skies. Inspired by all that starry serenity, Ben Hur trades his chariot for a tram car ride and replaces revenge with family-friendly amusements. The Suicide Squad, naturally, does not amuse easily but are happily intrigued by Monster Truck Rides (and those ZombieCrushers). Far from the Ice Age: (a) Collision Course cannot compete with a warm night spent wandering through Starlux Mini Golf, where fun and adventure happily collide. Enjoying her seaside break, Florence Foster Jenkins loves all of the entertainment she’s discovered in our talented town and encourages our gifted characters to meet and greet each summer day they’re lucky enough to be by the big, beautiful sea…

When Mike and Freddy Vicario were kids, they were happily making memories by the sea, spending their summer days at their Aunt Dot and Uncle Gabe’s rental house located at Spencer and Pacific Aves. Wildwood days with their parents, Mike and Angela, naturally included many cousins such as Anthony, Monica and Patty Ann, also pictured here. Many of these cherished photographs were taken on the boardwalk at the gone-but-never-forgotten Hunt’s Pier in the 1960s and 1970s. The Vicario boys preferred form of transportation in those days clearly came in the form of “classic” boardwalk cars, which they drove with as much concentration as the real thing! In 1971, the Vicario’s purchased their own piece of paradise in Wildwood Crest, where they continued to fill those photo albums with now-treasured memories. For Mike and Freddy, those memorable Wildwood days remain close at heart.

The STriKe of 8 1! by Joe Russo

Thirty five years ago this summer Ma-

jor League Baseball players went on strike for 50 days between June 12th and August 10th in a dispute over free agency compensation. Baseball fans nationwide were affected and here in Wildwood it felt like a gaping hole was carved into the middle of my summer. I had plenty of distractions- the beach, the boardwalk, the nightclubs, but I remember the summer of 1981 as being extremely boring. To begin with, the Philadelphia Phillies opened that season playing from a position unfamiliar to their fans – as defending World Champions. I was at Veteran’s Stadium on opening day when the championship banner was raised and I returned two months later on June 10th for a game against the Houston Astros. The game held a lot of intrigue despite the impending strike, which loomed on the horizon like an approaching thunderstorm. History was about to be made: Going into the game Pete Rose needed one hit to tie Stan Musial as the all-time National League hits leader at 3,630. As a bonus Steve Carlton was pitching against Nolan Ryan. In the bottom of the first, Rose laced a single to tie Musial and then proceeded to strike out in his next three at-bats. Going into the bottom of the eighth the Phillies were down 4-0 and Ryan was, as the saying goes, “dealing” until he sprained his back fielding a grounder and had to leave the game. The Phillies took advantage, scoring five runs in the inning, capped off by a two out, two run home run by Garry Maddox and won the game 5-4. It was one of those victories that could ignite a hot streak, and I felt one coming with this team. But, alas, the thunderstorm moved in. One month later I was down at Diamond

Beach hanging out with my friends and experiencing that lack of baseball boredom in a big way – it seemed like nobody had anything to talk about. With nothing else to do I hopped on my bike and rode up to my family’s restaurant to see if anything was going on. In the bar the regulars were watching a John Wayne movie where the Phillies game should have been. I headed out the door and around the corner and spotted Paul, a young neighborhood boy in front of his house tossing a whiffle ball in the air and swinging at it with a plastic bat. “Hey, want to play a game?” I said. We decided on a five inning match, with Paul as the home team. I quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead, thanks to two basesloaded doubles, but Paul came back to score three runs. In the bottom of the fifth Paul lies off my knuckleball and draws 3 bases on balls with nobody out. I decide to go with my heat. I envision myself as Tug McGraw coming in for the save and I get two quick outs. McGraw (me) peers in for the sign. Bob Boone (also me) calls for Tug’s famous “Peggy Lee fastball” (Is that all there is?). Paul swings for the fences. Strike one. I bark at Paul in my finest Dallas Green fashion for crowding the plate (a city water sidewalk cover) and throw a brushback pitch that he swings at for strike two. Across the street a small crowd of patrons waiting for the restaurant to open has assembled along the sidewalk. They appear to be desperate for baseball of any kind as well (why else would they be watching us?). I stop and fill them in on the situation thus far. Back on the mound I return to the knuckler but Paul is not fooled and works the count full. I toe the mound; Paul digs in and the crowd inches closer. I go into the stretch, rear back, and throw a fastball that locks Paul’s knees as it crosses the plate. Strike three, game over! I hear Harry Kalas say, “Swing and a miss, struck e-e-e-m out,” as Whitey Ashburn deadpans, “I can’t believe he took that pitch.” A smattering of applause ripples from across the street before the crowd disperses. Paul gathers up the bat and ball and retreats into his house in a huff. I jump on my bike for the ride home. The sidewalk cover remains in place in case someone else wants to play.

I Met My True Love in Wildwood

#tbt The Sun has been throwing it back since 2004!

Like the beginning of so many great love stories, Joe and Mary Maloy met on the beaches of Wildwood more than 30 years ago. Mary graduated from college in 1981 and worked for the beach patrol that summer while studying for her nursing boards. As fate would have it, Joe, who was a tent crew member with administrative responsibilities, was one of Mary’s bosses. By August of that year, their work relationship turned into something more. They kept their love-at-first-sight connection quiet until the end of the summer. Mary began her job at CHOP in September and their romance blossomed. Years have passed since their life-altering season spent by the sea, and Joe can still be found every summer working on Wildwood’s beaches. Now, they watch in eager anticipation as their young son Joe competes for his gold medal this summer on the US Olympic triathalon team. Go Joe!!!!!!

Fish Cleaning

In the summer of 1944 my cousin Jack,

Mickey Gentile and myself formed a partnership to clean fish on Blake’s Dock at Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. We charged 3 cents per fish, 1 cent each for scaling, gutting and beheading. We were all 8 years old. Blake’s dock was located at our corner, about 100 yards away from our house. Jack Blake and his Dad Percy (don’t let his name fool you because he was a very tough guy) ran deep-sea fishing boats from their dock for fisherman who drove down from Philly. We would meet “The Capt. Blake” and “Wildwood II” each day to hawk our 3¢ fish- cleaning service as the fishermen were leaving the boats. Our pitch was that it was a cheap deal to save all the mess and trouble of having to clean the fish after their 3-hour ride back to the city. On average, we spent an hour 1945 & 2003 cleaning about 200 fish a day from Jack Blake, Mickey Gentile & Bob Friedenberg which we each earned $2. On our biggest day we cleaned 1000 porgies for a the beach in the wet sand. JULY 21 DUTCH HOFFMAN MEMORIAL LIFEGUARD RACES. Beach & Lincoln Ave. 6:30pm

Frank “Dutch” Hoffman was the much-loved

Captain of the Wildwood Beach Patrol and the beloved grandfather of Fred & Chris Gross, (who happily credit the Wildwoods as the perfect place to grow up). He began his lifeguard career in 1923, then moved into the role of Lieutenant, which he held for several years. In 1938, he was appointed to Captain/Director of the Wildwood Beach Patrol, serving in this role for the next 24 years. Since 1969, Wildwood has sponsored the Dutch Hoffman Memorial Lifeguard Championships in honor of a man who meant so much to the town he proudly served. The event, which typically takes place the last Friday in July, is a time-honored tradition and testament to a fondly-recalled member of Wildwood’s illustrious history.

She met her True Love at the Fish Factory

Scott Jett learning to walk with grandmother Annette Jett and mother Ronnie Jett, at 107 E. Atlanta Avenue, 1965

by scott jett

Patrolman Jett outside of North Wildwood City Hall, 1962

The Cravens had been in the Wildwoods since the early 1900’s, the Jetts didn’t arrive until 1953, when Haynie Products of Reedville, VA purchased the old Fish Factory on Route 47 (now the site of the MUA plant) and sent my grandfather, J. Frank Jett, to oversee operations. He and my grandmother Annette had a home built at 107 E. Atlanta Avenue in Wildwood Crest, which is now owned by Dr. Stone. My mother, Cheronne Craven (known to all as Ronnie), and her family lived at 104 W. 17th Avenue in North Wildwood, which I later purchased in 1987 after my mother’s parents had passed away. The paths of the Jetts and Cravens crossed at the fish factory on a cold day in March 1955. My mother had gotten a job there as a secretary after graduating from Wildwood High School in 1954. My father, William F. Jett (Bill), had come to work there after graduating from Northumberland High School in Virginia. My mother says it was love at first sight; she went home that day after work and told her mother that she had seen the man that she would marry, even though she had to admit that she did not know his name yet. They were married on December 15, 1956 in the Methodist Church at Roberts & Pacific Avenues in Wildwood. Dad joined the North Wildwood Police Department in 1960 and was promoted to Sergeant in 1970. My parents bought the house at 208 E. 14th Avenue in 1967, where I spent the rest of my childhood. Mom and Dad were active at church and

in the Boy Scouts. I still have people to this day tell me that they remember Mrs. Jett as their Den-Mother and Mr. Jett as their Explorer Troop leader. Dad always had a second job, working in construction for Ernie Troiano Sr. and then Bob Scully. He was also a volunteer fireman. Our family spent a number of summers at Holly Shores Campground in Erma where Mom ran the office and Dad would come work there when his police shift was finished. In the early 1970s Mom got a job at the Rio Motel, where she worked off and on for 25 years, also working for Marine National Bank and the North Wildwood Police Department until she retired in 2002. Mom taught me what I call Life Lesson #1 in the fall of 1972. I was eight years old and had gone with her to Wildwood (“downtown” she would say) to do some shopping for Christmas. Back then Wildwood had everything you needed - Murphy’s, Woolworth’s, Lee’s, Halpern’s, the Martha Shop, Meyer’s Shoes, Allen’s Men’s Shop, Staller’s Hardware, Giddings, Tot Town, Taylor’s Photo Shop, etc. Mom and I were walking on the south side of Wildwood Avenue towards Pacific, and a man was coming towards us. As he passed by, Mom said hello and he said hello back. I didn’t know who he was, but Mom had spoken to him so I figured she knew him. I asked her, “Who was that?” She replied, “I don’t know.” So I asked her, “Then why did you say hello to him?” She said, “You have to be nice.” I remember it like it was yesterday and I

The Menhaden Plant also known as the Fish Factory, on Route 47 Rio Grande Blvd. Bill Jett’s family arrived in 1953 seeking work in the booming fishing industry. The ‘J. Scott Jett’ ship was dedicated to his father.

have tried to live my life that way. Mom was always helping and showing kindness to others. We often made cakes and pies to take to someone who was sick or had lost a loved one. When she heard a new family was moving into the area and they hadn’t found a home yet, they were invited to stay at our house. When a young lady at our church had nowhere to go, Mom had her move in with us until she got back on her feet. When a friend went through a divorce, he was told to stay in our spare bedroom until he got things settled down in his life. Being nice and helping others was the way she lived, and she expected her children to do the same. I have tried, but will never be able to live up to the standard that she set. Our lives took a tragic turn on December 11, 1974 when Dad was killed in a deer hunting accident. True to form, Mom told us that it was an accident and that we should forgive the man who did it and never hold a grudge. She later met with the man personally and has always told me that she had no hard feelings towards him - it was an accident, pure and simple. When Dad was alive we were always camping or fishing or playing baseball or doing something outdoors. We spent long weekends at Gettysburg and Lancaster and all parts of Virginia, usually stopping on the way home to see my grandparents, who had gone back after the fish factory in New Jersey had run its course. On all our family trips to Virginia, I don’t remember Dad ever

driving home via the Delaware Memorial Bridge - he loved to be outdoors, so we always took the Ferry. He loved being on the beach. We would fly kites, play baseball, and fish. Instead of having us hold the ball of kite string in our hands, Dad would hook up the kite to a fishing rod, making it easy to reel in. He wasn’t too happy chasing his brand-new rod down the beach one day after it had slipped out of my hands. If he was out on the sandbar trying for stripers and the tide was coming up, he would tell us not to wait for him, he would be home in a while. A couple hours later he would come walking up 14th Avenue, his waders full of water because the tide got too high for him to get back in. His waders would be hanging over the fence for a few days to dry out. I can still see him leaning over the picnic table in our yard, cleaning the first drum fish that I had ever seen. We always had plenty of fish in the summers and venison in the winters. We took a trip with friends to Cape Hatteras in the spring of 1975, but it wasn’t the same without Dad. How Mom raised our family alone and kept it together can only be attributed to her hard work and the goodness and mercy of God. She is over at Brookdale in Court House now. She would love to see you. Don’t be surprised if your conversation with her is more about you and the other residents there, than about her, as she still thinks of others before herself. I don’t believe that anyone on earth has ever had better parents than I had.

Wishin’ for Good fishin’ with Capt.

Gary Sloan

Dear Fellow Anglers: I welcome you all to the summer column to share in some truths and a few smiles. To catch you up to the start of the summer season the bulk of the Drum and Stripers have checked out of the area. Both fisheries did show in good numbers, however the persistent wind did keep a lot of boats tied to the dock. The Drum were thick enough that I even landed one. I believe Mother Nature owes us some decent stretches of calm for the summer season. The Flounder were slow to start but will steadily pick up in the back waters. If you plan on pursuing them in the Delaware Bay read up on the rules for 17 inch fish. The Marine Fisheries dissertation of rules precludes me from covering them in this limited article. Imagine that! One of the bigger surprises to me this year has been the quality and quantity of the Weakfish or as locals will call them Seatrout. The jetties have produced Seatrout with lures or floated crab. They also hang around bridges at night in the fringe of the lights. The old grounds and Delaware reef sight eleven have started to produce with some good Flounder catches. The structure of the inshore reefs will carry both Seabass and Fluke most of this summer season. The backwaters seemed to be warming up and the small Blues and Stripers are biting in the evenings and early mornings. Some cut mackerel on

the hook besides minnows can help for flounder some days. Seabass season has a reduction of your catch limits changing just when they really get going in the last part of June. Clever those Marine Fisheries guys. I have noticed the spread of more southern species coming into our local waters. Sheepshead and Trigger fish just to name a few. The smorgsboard just gets larger in the summer with Blues, Trout, Fluke, Seabass, Kingfish, Sharks, and Trigger fish. Take a day and enjoy the unique diversity of marine fisheries in our local waters. The offshore sport fishing should explode during July thru September. Not a cheap date but will be one of those experiences you will remember for life. Nature’s paint brush is most vivid on the fish from the offshore blue waters. The gallant effort of a White Marlin, the brute force of a Blue Marlin, and the tug of war with a Yellowfin Tuna will test your strength and endurance. Luck can provide a great Mahi on the grill at days end for a great end to a wonderful trip in nature’s playground. Whatever adventure you choose on the water you will find yourself at the end of the day blessed, humbled, and twice blessed to have shared the experienced with someone special. Hope to see you on the big blue soon, God bless,

Captain Gary Sloan, North Wildwood, NJ FIND A MISTAKE?

It is our pocily to include something for everyone. Since some people like to find errors, we regularly include a few in our publications.

If a fisherman goes out to fish, he should always pray/ For perpetual sunshine that will not fade away/ And he will have good luck all day.

“I love nostalgia myself. I hope we never lose some of the things of the past.” ~Walt Disney

welcome back summer!

McMonagle kids at Moore’s beach, 1972 Joe, Dorothy, Jim. Mike, Sharon, Natalie

Our seaside days are never dull, as autumn gave us brilliant color, and awesome events, winter treated us to mild temperatures (and the occasional coastal storm) while our spring brought us even closer to long beach days and boardwalk nights. Established businesses welcomed new neighbors (a happy hello, Starlux mini golf, the ultimate, beach-themed miniature golf course located across from that infamous WILDWOOD sign). Our beaches were damaged but never down for the count, as replenishment projects were diligently underway, while construction was occurring all over town. As each season brought its own sunshine and starlight, we pondered, is there truly a better place to spend the summer (or any season) than in Wildwood by the sea, where each scenic sunrise opens up endless possibilities? (Life really is better in flip flops) During these Endless Summer days, we here at The SUN promise not only to keep you current on all the seaside news fit to print, but also to reflect on all that occurred during those can’t-wait-for-summer-to-gethere days (we’ll take any excuse to revisit the past, nostalgic lovers that we are). We wholeheartedly agree with poet Emily Dickinson, who wrote, “To see the Summer Sky is poetry, though never in a Book it lie-True poems flee.” Under our poetic skies, our local businesses spent the off season preparing for the Summer of 2016, promising unique and exciting services while our one-of-a-kind Boardwalk promised one-of-a-kind entertainment. After a stormy winter, our beaches cleaned up nicely and happily welcomed backed the crowds and our favorite restaurants and attractions sprung back to life

(A happy welcome back to the Farmers Market and FREE Movies at the Beach in Downtown Wildwood!) After many off-season preparations, our very-own-award-winning Morey’s Piers began a brand new, fun-filled season on March 26, 2016, with expanded favorites, including Joe’s Fish Company and Raging Waters Water Park, a few sad good byes (so long, Sky Coaster and The Tornado) and a smoother ride on the Great White Roller Coaster and Great Nor’easter along with a speedy move for Formula One Raceway, the Go Karts on Surfside Pier, to Adventure Pier’s Grand Prix Go Kart track. Kanga Bounce made a big bouncy comeback, replacing the Sky Coaster while The Maze replaced the Tornado. The Summer of 2016 is shaping up SUNsationally! There’s never a dull moment, especially weather-wise, in our coastal community, which experienced its share of highs and low (tide), resulting in a roller coaster ride of fluctuating temperatures, some mild winter days (Santa wore shades) and a soggy spring, all ushering in those long-anticipated summer beach days! The forecast is always bright, if sometimes only in our hearts, by the sea! Now that summer is officially and blissfully here, with its own coastal tales to tell, you can count on us here at The SUN, pen in hand and beach chair nearby, to report on each fabulous but fleeting summer moment, and, of course, shine that spotlight on our SUN readers and friends, who are always our preferred topic. Like you, we wish time would slow down, the sun and stars would always shine, and our favorite season would never end. While we capture each memory-inthe-making, we’re in perfect harmony with F. Scott Fitzgerald, who believed, “That familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” We know our latest and, we think greatest, stories are just beginning and hope you’ll check back with us in September with your own Wildwood stories to tell. You know you can always find us, happily waiting, right here by the sea… by Meg Corcoran and Dorothy Kulisek
