the Sun by-the-Sea

JULY - AUGUST 2017

“Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together try to love one another right now. . .” ~Get Together, Youngbloods

from the editor “Smell the sea and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly.” ~Van Morrison

With the 13th year of The Sun officially upon us, and our beautiful sea and sky within soulful sight, there’s no better time to gratefully acknowledge our amazing advertisers for their continued support and our thoughtful readers and friends for providing us with endless inspiration. We couldn’t create our sunny slice of heaven without any of you! Because sharing each heavenly, Wildwood moment is what we here at The Sun naturally love to do, we invite you along on our latest adventure as we proudly celebrate our teenage years! Within the pages of The Sun, we’ve creatively collected thirteen years of homespun happiness, with enduring stories and everyone’s favorite seaside photos. Although The Sun can be enjoyed anywhere, it is, of course, best read by sunlight accompanied by an ocean view. With the turn of each page, may The Sun briefly cause time to stand still. Thanks in part to the magic of photography, we, too, can stand still, pause for an instant and capture each memory-in-the-making. For years to come, we get to remember the fun we had when the flash went off. Our photographs taken by the sea make for the best memory keepers; Then God said, “Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground [beach] and the waters seas. And God saw that it was good!!” ~Genesis 1:9-10

happy reminders of days gone but never forgotten, offering us a sweet and lasting glimpse back in time to unhurried moments spent with family and friends. This issue is overflowing with them. This summer edition happily reminds us there’s something special about summertime at the beach; particularly here in Wildwood by-the-Sea. Whether we are locals or summer folk, as our treasured featured photographs convey, we are all mystically drawn here. Something holds us here, where we’re free to enjoy our own personalized rituals and shore customs year after year. For many of us, the beach is a way of life. It’s a world unto itself, where people come together simply because they want to be together. As you enter onto the beach for the first time this summer, remove your flip flops, feel the soft sand between your toes and know you’ve arrived. Look around and notice all those smiling faces. From this perspective, it appears to be a giant beach fair. At times, it feels like a Wildwoodinspired Woodstock festival and, at other times, like a Sunday morning church celebration. As we welcome Summer, may we always remember that any day at the beach is better than a day ... well, anywhere else! May our hearts overflow with endless summer days and may this copy of The Sun by-the-Sea invoke feelings of a Sunshine Festival! Whatever that mystical quality is deep within our soul that draws us to the Wildwoods, may it connect us here forever, and may it inspire us to embrace each picture-postcard moment we’re blessed to spend by the sea… See you on the beach, (at the festival)

“While you were away. . “

Collaboratively written by Meg Corcoran, Al Alven & Dorothy Kulisek Because we here at the Sun love a good sequel as much as the next beachgoer, we’re recapping our informationpacked While You Were Away column (in case you missed it the first time), highlighting our off-season activities while spotlighting the countless construction, around-town upgrades and business news happening from the Beaches to the Boardwalk, doing our part to keep Wildwood lovers properly up-to-date. With sunglasses in hand and your favorite beach chair nearby, we invite you on another sandy walk down memory lane, filled with all of the newsworthy, seaside events that happened While You Were Away… Predicting a Successful 2017 Crest Savings Bank President Jay Ford spoke to approximately 100 people at the Wildwoods Convention Center in January for the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce’s annual Financial Forecast Luncheon, at which time he remarked that 2015 may have been the best economic year for the island while predicting a successful 2017. What’s in a Name? On November 8th, following months of campaigning to change North Wildwood’s name to Anglesea, the votes were tallied and most residents voted to keep the present name of North Wildwood intact. The Winning AngleSea Walk Following more than 150 entries and 198 pages of essays, the judges of North Wildwood’s “Name that Seawall Contest” selected The AngleSea Walk, entered by Helen Murray. The grand prize winner received a week’s stay for a family of four at the Acropolis Resort Motel, located at 3rd and JFK, along with a family basket of fun Wildwood items. Wildwood Crest Street work Surface paving of formerly reconstructed and base sections of Pacific Avenue between Rambler Road and Cresse Avenue in Wildwood Crest took place on October 10th. Most the work was completed on the east section of the road but the full width of Pacific Avenue was recently repaved between Morning Glory Road and Cresse Avenue along with a section of the Rambler Road and Pacific Avenue intersections.

Upgrades in North Wildwood During a September 20th city council meeting, Mayor Patrick Rosenello announced new outfall pipes would be installed from 3rd to 5th Avenues to improve storm drainage with an additional shower hookup at the beach at 4th Avenue. Showers are also scheduled to be installed at 1st and Surf Avenues, as well as 2nd and Ocean. Ocean Avenue from 2nd to 18th Avenues was under major reconstruction during the majority of the winter months. The 16th avenue playground was beautifully renovated and includes a fully ADA compliant access area to the beach and boardwalk. A new Hereford Inlet webcam was set up along the 2nd Ave. inlet section of the seawall. It can be accessed at www. northwildwood.com Wildwood Parks Receive Redo In an ongoing project that began in 2016, each park throughout the city of Wildwood has received, or is slated to receive, a much needed facelift that will help bring them back to their original splendor. To date, several city parks have been updated. “Over the years our parks were places where people gathered,” said Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. “They had fountains and beautifully planted flowers, people respected them and enjoyed them. We hope to return them to places where everyone will want to visit.” The city’s park revitalization program will continue throughout the 2017 season. “This is just one more step in our commitment to bringing Wildwood back to its glory as one of America’s premier familyfriendly beach resort destinations,” said Mayor Troiano. Building a Bigger and Better Beach A multi-million-dollar federal beach project could return the wide beaches to the north end of North Wildwood with a dune system the length of the island from the gazebo at Second Avenue to the Diamond Beach section of Lower Township. Plans call for hydraulically moving 1.5 million cubic yards of sand from Wildwood and Wildwood Crest to develop North Wildwood’s beach to increase safety from coastal storms, with construction taking place in 2018. “Overall, we’re happy with the design of the dune in North Wildwood,” said Mayor Patrick Rosenello, who called

“I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.” ~F. Scott Fitzgerald

“ W ildwood - a new season“ the plan the most significant infrastructure project in the island’s history. “The dune system that we have in North Wildwood is essentially the same dune system they are proposing for the rest of the island. I think it has prevented tens of millions of dollars in damage in the last 11 years,” he added. “When that storm hits us, and it will eventually, these protective measures are going to literally save the island. I have no doubt in my mind,” he said. Wildwood and Wildwood Crest residents and officials have expressed concern that the dune would spoil ocean views along with the benefits of reducing the beaches size on most of the barrier island. DEP officials have said it would not move forward if the towns rejected the project. Nevertheless, Wildwood Crest Mayor Carl Groon believes the dune project is on its way. In a recent interview, Groon stated that under Wildwood Crest’s form of government, three-member borough commission, he has no more power to speak on the town’s behalf than the two other commissioners. In Wildwood, Mayor Ernie Troiano also expressed ambivalence regarding the project during a recent interview. Although Wildwood has extremely wide beaches, Troiano said they lost approximately 140 feet this year. Wildwood Weather Report With Labor Day weekend signaling the unofficial end of a hot Summer of 2016, weathermen were predicting a washout courtesy of Hurricane Hermine. Although Hermine ended up being kind to our coastal community, many visitors, discouraged by the dismal weather predictions, forgo a weekend stay, putting a real damper on holiday business. October and November, happily, offered summer-like temperatures, encouraging beach-seeking visitors and enhancing Autumn’s off-season events. December arrived and with it colder temperatures (and Santa!) On January 7th, Winter Storm Helena came to town, bringing with her six inches of snow, with even larger drifts, offering lots of family fun on that Saturday afternoon. A Nor’Easter made a stormy, high-wind appearance on January 23rd, fortunately sparing our island of severe coastal floodings. One week later, on January 30th, our coastal town experienced a scenic winter

wonderland, with about 2 inches of snow occurring before the sun came out, making our seascape even brighter! With February came a pre-spring break, as President’s Weekend and the remainder of the month, producing sunny skies and record-breaking temperatures, with crowds arriving in droves to enjoy the sunshine! We were left wondering if March came in like a lion or a lamb, with the warm start quickly turning wintery cold by March 2nd! The Farmer’s Almanac appropriately dubbed our unpredictable weather a Polar Coaster. Many shorebirds made the trek back east and up north weeks earlier (ahead of schedule) as the trees began to bloom before the calendar officially announced spring. March 14th brought another Nor’easter dubbed Winter Storm Stella. It moved through rather quickly, bringing mild coastal flooding and some more beach erosion. April showers brought us lovely May flowers. If we could special order our island’s summer weather, our wish would be for ‘fair winds and following seas’. Now with the Summer of 2017 in full swing, we’re living happily in the moment, enjoying the view and, of course, comprising our own summer story we can’t wait to share with you, our Sun readers and friends, next time we meet by the sea…

NEW AND OLD BUSINESS Every new season brings change. It’s a fact of nature, and a pretty good bet in the seasonal resort towns of the Jersey Shore, as well. Shortly after the New Year, signs were indicating a banner season for the Wildwoods, with an influx of new businesses for 2017. One by one, the announcements came. And they just kept coming. And coming. And - well, you get the idea. Fortunately, we had our scorecards ready... Around the Island We start out at 26th & New Jersey, on the North Wildwood side of the border with Wildwood proper, where Stephen & Jacqueline Mendel have introduced their new Sand Jamm 5Mile retail store. After 26 years on the Boardwalk, they are expanding to a stand-alone “open air” location that will feature a wide selection of “Coastal Lifestyle” clothing Read on!

and accessories for all ages. Vineyard Vines, Sperry, Salty Crew & Yeti to name a few! The landmark Sand Jamm 5Mile at the base of the old Hunt’s Pier (Boardwalk & Juniper) will operate for one more summer. Look for the colorful neon sign formerly adorning the boardwalk to glow brightly from the rooftop of the New Jersey Avenue store. Just down the block at 26th & Delaware Ave. - previously home of O’Boyles Irish Pub and North Wildwood’s longstanding favorite corner pub, Tony’s, is The Salty Mermaid Bar & Grille The new owners tell me that lunch and dinner will be served year-round, the atmosphere will be casual, the food will be made from the freshest ingredients and the drinks will quench your thirst! They are working hard to open for the season. Chef Mia Chiarella continues the tradition of her family name with Mia Mia Raw Bar & Ristorante at 3100 Pacific Avenue. The charismatic “FitChef,” who has gained national recognition from appearances on hit shows such as ABC’s The Taste, serves up a nightly menus of favorites and new Italian and seafoodthemed creations. The ristorante has earned rave reviews from locals and visitors alike since debuting in late 2016. Dock Street Seafood, a longtime Wildwood seafood market on Otten’s Harbor, will be moving it’s wholesale seafood distribution business three blocks north to the former Charles Ghur Stationary Store building at Roberts & Park Ave. The structure has been under major renovation, and hopes to be ready for Summer 2017. Are future plans in store for a new seafood restaurant at Dock Street’s original location at Ottens Harbor? Memorial Day Weekend saw the opening of Bell’s Philly Grill at 12th & New Jersey Avenues, directly across from Cool Scoops Ice Cream Parlor. Bell’s offers a full menu of breakfast and lunch specialties, including their tantalizing Philly rib eye cheesesteaks. In Wildwood, Nicky D’s Breakfast & Burgers has come to 3401 New Jersey Avenue, right around the corner from

Alfe’s Restaurant. A block to the east, on the other side of the future site of Byrne Plaza, a new ice cream shop named The Wild Scoop is being prepped to open by the Fourth of July. Marie Nicole’s Grill at Diamond Beach has relocated to Avalon. In its place at 9510 Pacific Avenue, the Barnabei family has created De Ninno’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar - “a chic American grill offering steaks, seafood and seasonal fare, full bar with happy hour & a patio.” One of the last-remaining links to Downtown Wildwood’s famous nightclub scene disappeared earlier this year when the rusted out neon lettering was removed from the old Fairview Cafe at Lincoln & Pacific. The venue, perhaps best remembered as home to “Beat the Clock,” has been closed for several years, despite an attempt to reopen as recently as 2015. However, it was completely repainted bright green shortly after the signs were taken down, leading to speculation of what is to come. What will it be? Meanwhile, at the other (north) end of the 3600 block of Pacific, new life is reportedly coming to another long-shuttered nightclub. The future of the former M.T. Bottle at Schellenger & Pacific is in the hands of Annie Arentzen, who operated 2nd Street Annie’s on Olde New Jersey Avenue back in 2004-2005. The all new 2nd Street Annie’s is home to “dueling pianos” and Bob Pantano Sunday night Dance Party. They opened with a bang on Memorial Day weekend. Bayside Happenings Some big changes were made at South Dock Restaurant & Marina and it’s adjoining property, The Surfing Pig, on the bay at 10th Avenue in North Wildwood. Owners Bill and Megan Bumbernick have completely rebuilt their decks, installing open air window enclosures allowing for most of the restaurant to be enclosed for bad weather (plus heating and air conditioning, enabling earlier spring openings and an extended fall season). They have also added a waterside bar since acquiring a liquor license over the winter. South Dock Marina continues to rent marine slips, pontoon boats, kayaks and paddle boards, while

“ W ildwood - a new season“ serving up breakfast, lunch and seafood, BBQ and raw bar dinners. On the Boardwalk Hershey’s Ice Cream, near the southern end of the promenade at 5306 Boardwalk, underwent a total renovation over the offseason. The highlight is a brand new bulb-studded sign that screams Vintage Wildwood! The Ferrazzano family, which opened the shop in 2005, is originally from South Philadelphia, with a history in Wildwood dating back to the 1940’s. Around the island Joe & Colleen Lerro of North Wildwood’s Joe-Joe’s Pizza is going Mexican! bringing to Olde New Jersey Aves. bar district the all new Tacos & Tequlia Restaurant & Bar. But no problemo! Joe-Joe’s will still be serving its famous selection of pizza pies. Petals Floral Design & Gifts has blossomed into a bigger flower shop at Rio Grande & Pacific, adjacent to its sister store, Total Image Salon. The fullservice florist’s new studio features an expanded showroom and design center stocked with new products. Catina Simmons’ Beach Whiskers, formerly located a few doors down from Total Image, is now located at 3417 Pacific Avenue, on the same block as Hooked on Books, and Between the Lines Boutique. The boutique gift shop offers a wide variety of family and beach-themed products, including jewelry, toys, candy, cards, original artwork, novelty items and vacation necessities. Congratulations go out to Kieran & Jim from Hooked on Books, who, much to their humble expectations and happy surprise, won the Philly.com/Inquirer/ Daily News Readers Choice Award for Best Bookstore. Milestones With the closing of Silens, Douglass Candies & Fudge is now the oldest business in the Wildwoods (and the oldest on the Boardwalk by a good margin). Originally opened in the exact same location at Wildwood Ave. & the Boardwalk in 1919, the timeless sweet shop and candy-making facility is entering its 98th year! No other business on the island is quite the Wildwood Time Machine than the Douglass Candies Store & Pavilion. Wildwood boardwalk’s 2 most iconic pizza places, has Mack’s Pizza in

its 65th year, while Sam’s Pizza Palace celebrates its 60th anniversary. Justina Ziccardi of Marcellina celebrates 10 stunning years on the southend of Wildwood boardwalk! Giovanni and Sandy Sanzone have some fresh ideas for their new acquisition, Avalon Coffee in Rio Grande. The popular business now offers homemade bread along with a variety of menu additions. A major remodel of the shop is planned to get underway after this summer. The Sanzones grew up working in a family-owned pizzeria business, then started and owned Little Italy Restaurant in Wildwood Crest for 20 years. They sold Little Italy in 2016, moving on to their latest venture. Farewell... The end of an era in Downtown Wildwood was marked last October, when Silen’s Shoes & Resort Wear closed its doors after 97 years of continuous operation. According to retiring owner Barry Rasmussen, his great grandfather, John Silen, opened the store in 1919. Silen had operated a business on Richmond St. in Philadelphia before relocating to 5 Mile Beach. His store grew and went on to cater to generations of residents and vacationers at Hand & Pacific Avenues. After decades of serving customers along the Spruce Avenue entrance boulevard in North Wildwood, the seasonal McDonald’s closed its doors last fall. It continues to sit vacant, with no indication of what may replace it. Keep an eye on... Extensive renovations are ongoing at the long-shuttered 7 Seas Cafe, at New Jersey & Burk Avenues. According to workers on-site the week after Memorial Day Weekend, a plan is in place for a liquor store to open this summer. Like the proverbial shifting sands of time, change is one of life’s few constants. Even so, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen an offseason as active as the one just passed in the Wildwoods. Each new business, every burgeoning venture detailed here (as well as those still to come) will have the opportunity to place a unique footprint on our island. Their stories are just beginning, as our grand tale of fun-by-the-sea continues to be written. Here’s to memories, old and new Summer 2017, here we come!

Mr. & Mrs. Bud McCartney

Young Jack McCartney

Helen & Bud McCartney by their “Nash” automobile, Wildwood 1954

Bud McCartney, Wildwood, c. 1940s

The McCartney family, 1961

Fate, and a bit of Wildwood’s romantic setting intervened for Jack McCartney’s parents, Helen & Bud, who may have lived around the corner from each other in Philadelphia, but found each other on a crowded beach in Wildwood by-the-sea, where their hearts would finally meet and sweep them away in their own sea of love. On that fateful summer day in 1947, little did either know that a routine trip to the beach would lead them on the journey of a lifetime. While laying on her blanket in the sand, Jack’s mom turned to the young man whose foot happened to be in such close proximity to her, that she boldly asked if he wouldn’t mind if she laid her head on his foot! Jack’s dad, naturally, was so captivated by her beauty and told her that he wouldn’t mind at all. Then, just like that little ditty says, “First comes love, second comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage...” first Dan, followed by Jack several years later. Helen & Bud McCartney planned to live their happily-ever-after together with their little family but sadly, God had other plans. Jack’s mom passed away at the young age of 52, joined just 7 years later for eternity with Jack’s brokenhearted dad, the love of her life. Now Jack proudly carries his parents love in his heart and has happily lived his own life filled with love for his wife Renee and their daughter Grace, who he gets to share the sweet story of how his parents found true love by the sea... “Shine like the sun!” ~psalm 37:6 Hereford Inlet Lighthouse Bridges of Faith Day was held May 21, 2017 symbolizing God’s eternal light that has been shining over our island since 1874. On Sunday afternoon, 4 of 6 North Wildwood churches united to honor the city’s religious diversity at the site of the first Scott Jett, North Wildwood City Clerk worship service which was held at Her- and Historian eford Lightouse in 1878. The first service was led by Keeper Freeling & Abbey Hewitt, devout Baptists. As the population grew, the need for churches arised.

Ever since I was a young boy, Wildwood has held a special place in my heart. It’s a place of summer’s anticipation, peace, excitement, priceless memories and genuine fun. The whole scene is captivating, the feelings exquisite, from the drive down until you hear the rumble of the car’s tires against the metal grate of the Rio Grande Bridge. Curving off Exit 4b onto the straight stretch of Rt. 47 I can see a giant glimmering Ferris wheel on the horizon and the neon lights of a retro Wawa coming up on the right. Wildwood is an island that I can claim, a place I know inside and out, a little blessing next to an enormous sea. At night, when I’m curled up on the porch under the awning, listening to the distant music from the adjacent Beach Creek Restaurant with the potent odor of a low tide bay across the street, I feel something I can’t feel anywhere else. Looking over the railing I can see lights from the Uries restaurant sign and a few cars passing over the bridge, but for now I’m on the side that’s by the sea. I wasn’t the only one taken by the Wildwoods though, no, the island had a rich history with my family that went back to my great grandparents. They too felt the same way I did, just in a different era. Wildwood was in their hearts as it was passed down to mine and as I will pass on to my children and hopefully theirs. Of course times have changed, people have changed, places have changed, but the island is the same, the streets are still there, the same ocean crashes on the same beach against the same sand along the same boardwalk. The same smell of a low tide bay settles over the same neighborhoods. There’s nothing like what is yours, and the island has that feeling that in some way, although shared by thousands, it is mine too. In the late 1930’s my Grandmother, Elizabeth splashed by the sea with other children and a Wildwood lifeguard at the end of Montgomery Avenue. Little did that small Italian baby know that her kids and grandkids would occupy the very same beaches. They

were from E Street in the Kensington section of Philadelphia, and every summer their whole street would rent the same places together along the bay in West Wildwood. To them, vacation was their neighborhood collectively, picked up and planted in a new setting: the Wildwoods. The strong sense of community is something to be admired by the generations of today. My Grandmom spent her summers growing up on the island, fishing with her brother Anthony on an old lifeguard boat that came with the cottage they rented, swimming in the ocean and walking up to the boardwalk arcades at Hunt’s Pier to see Laffing Sal, an automated character that produced a raucous laugh, frightening some small children and annoyed adults. Today such a character would be considered creepy, and the perfect entity for a horror film, but back then my Grandmother thought it was the funniest thing in the world. One summer during the 1950’s, after a strong rain storm, a flood swept through West Wildwood and my Grandmother and her brother took their small boat to the neighbor’s houses and to the market at the end of the street. “It was one of my favorite and most distinct childhood memories,” she said, “My father almost lost his swimming trunks.” She recalls being with her neighbors, taking the boats to get around. “It was crazy, but it was really fun too.” Years later, when she was in her twenties, she danced the night away at the firehouses on New Jersey Avenue with her husband, the legend, my loving grandfather James Dunn. Their five kids grew up to love the Wildwoods too, and the same treasure has been passed on to me. There’s a sense of security about being next to the ocean. A consistent faithfulness that’s never changing, and always beautiful. The waves will never stop crashing and the wind will never stop blowing and the vastness will always be vast. My family’s heritage and memories reside on this island, and what I know and treasure as my Wildwood by the sea, was theirs just as well.

Remember those “high quality” tiny-squared strips of black and white photos you once took with your nearest and dearest on the boardwalk? Before cell phones and “selfies” were all the rage, the boardwalk photo booth was the place to capture Summertime by the sea. Behind that curtain, facing that tiny spinning chair, friends & family would cram together for their photo op, often arguing over ownership of the four photos that would eventually drop down outside the booth. Sadly, the souvenir boardwalk photomatic photo booth is nowhere to be found. On our never-ending quest for all things Wildwood classic, we here at The Sun are betting many of our readers are in possession of those tiny, tattered memoirs. You already know how much we love to publish your photos. Please send your golden oldies to us!

I just finished reading your Holiday issue of The Sun. The stories of many people were enjoyable to read. They brought back so many memories to me, all the way back to the 1950s when everyone would venture to Wildwood. I was only 17 when I first drove to the shore with my sisters. We would travel Blue Anchor Road and Route 50 on a dark Friday night, never thinking the car would break down or we would encounter a deer back in those woods. We did not have cell phones back then and it was very dark and lonely along those roads. When I got married, my husband and I continued to take our vacation in Wildwood, soon with our five children. It started out as one week in August and gradually went to three weeks as the children got older. Our first vacation with the children, ages 2 to 10, was on a hot day in August. We packed our blue station wagon with crib, stroller, beach chairs and umbrella, linens, clothes, food and a small TV because back then most places did not furnish linens and TVs. My husband never made reservations. When we arrived to

The Sun is my favorite paper of all time. I can’t wait to get down to Wildwood (from Camden County) to pick up my copy. It’s the first thing I go looking for. You should be very proud of all you have accomplished. I always say to my kids, “A day down the shore is not complete without the Sun!” ~Sharon DiAmore

Wildwood we stopped at many places trying to find a room for seven people. Finally we stopped on 19th and Surf Avenue to check an apartment on the ground floor of a three-story home. We were lucky that it was available. It had a cottage in the rear of the home and there was a family of six staying there from Philadelphia, and my husband knew their families. (He was a person who could go to the desert and meet someone he knew.) All the kids were the same age and got along with one another. We did everything together, all 19 of us. The boardwalk, beach, bicycling, fishing, fireworks, music concerts, miniature golf, ice cream, church and birthday parties, you name it. So that was our place for vacation for many years until the kids were old enough to go down and stay with their friends. We would see the other families during the year at different events and reunions in Wildwood. When my husband passed away in 1998 I bought a place at the shore. Now my children and their families can enjoy the beaches of the Wildwoods because there is so much to enjoy at the shore. We are so lucky and have so many memories. I share this photo taken on the beach in 2014 of our entire family, all 31 of us. My children gave it to me for my birthday and it hangs over my fireplace at the shore. Our fun and memories at the shore will live on for many years. Thank you, Marcella Cole & family

THROWING IT BACK FOR 13 YEARS!

“I was happy anywhere I could see the ocean.” ~Ai Yazawa “Memory is a child walking along a seashore. You never can tell what small pebble it will pick up and store away among its treasured things.” ~Pierce Harris, Atlanta Journal

Those lucky enough to have spent their childhood summers at the shore may recall that sense of play captured during endless days spent among the surf, sand and amusement piers. Although our beaches and boardwalk offered (and still do) a larger-thanlife adventure, we were also fortunate to have numerous playgrounds taking their memorable spot on our seascape. From Diamond Beach and throughout the Wildwoods, our favorite seaside play areas found their own cherished place in our treasured memory boxes… Thankfully, with the passage of time, the cities continue to upgrade our prized playgrounds, ensuring that unforgettable sense of play for generations to come…

for PTC in Philadelphia and would bring his wife Nana Jean and son Jim to Wildwood for a week’s vacation every summer. They LOVED Wildwood, and thus, the great legacy of happy memories began. They were true beach bums, as their treasured photos attest. Naturally, Jim grew up with sand between his toes and, when he married Nancy, shared his love of Wildwood with her. Jim and Nancy would soon pass that love for all things Wildwood onto their four children, Debbie, Jimmy, Bruce and Scott. Debbie’s mother liked to tell her that she made the trip to Wildwood before she was even born (in her womb). Jim, who worked for GE, had three week’s summer vacation when the plant would close. Eventually, the extended family would summer by the sea together. They headed down the shore from the Tacony section, with the car loaded up. They would even bring Tabby the cat, complete with a cardboard box with holes, for the drive. During the 1950s, 60s and 70s, they rented a house in Wildwood Crest on Miami Ave., and occasionally in North Wildwood and West Wildwood before buying property on Juniper Ave. in Wildwood in the early 1980s. A typical summer day for the Eshers went like this… Nana & Pop Pop were early risers and would go to Latimer’s Bakery for fresh snowflake rolls for lunch and coconut danishes for breakfast. Mom would prepare breakfast before they all went for a bike ride on the boards. After that, they would head to the beach. Mom never packed lunch because she didn’t like to feed her family sandy sandwiches, so they would return home to eat. Debbie’s mouth watered

Debbie at Hunt’s Pier 1961

as she remembered her favorite Jersey tomato and cooper sharp cheese sandwich on a warm snowflake roll. After lunch, it was naptime for her younger brothers. Debbie loved having her father and grandparents to herself at the beach, and, being the true beach lovers that they were, they would stay until it was time for dinner. Nights, of course, were spent on the boardwalk. Debbie married Tom O’Connell and they continued the family tradition of spending as many summers in Wildwood as they could. They purchased their own home in North Wildwood in 1989. Tom retired from the Philadelphia Fire Department in 2011 and Debbie retired from Fox Chase Cancer Center the following year, allowing them to make Wildwood their permanent home. Sadly, their dream of living happily ever after seaside was cut short by Tom’s sudden death in May of 2012. Debbie has her little furry family of 2 Gordon Setters, Chappy & Snookie, and 3 cats, Ralphie, Mudgie & Drusis, to keep her company. Her brothers Jim, Bruce & Scott also share her love for Wildwood, and like the generations that came before them, happily spend part of their summertime by the sea… Dorothy Kulisek and Meg Corcoran

BEACH BANNERS

By Marilyn Guidetti

Bob & Fran Guidetti in their happy place by the sea

During a hot weekend last summer, I took some of my guests down to our crowded beach. We worked our way around the many tents and umbrellas, trying to get a place near the water. When we finally got settled I was wondering why my friends were looking around in amazement. They were “city folks” and I knew they hardly ever got to the beach, I also knew our beaches are very different then many beaches north of us, but I could not get over the look on their faces. More people kept coming down to the beach, they set up tents and umbrellas and many chairs. They pushed carts, wagons, wheel barrels and strollers. They tried to stake out their “territory” by laying towels and blankets on the sand around their group. Then they put up flags and banners with many different names and symbols and of course the American flag with smaller happy hour pendants beneath it. Looking back over the beach there were so many colorful flags and banners it was almost magical. My friends were still looking around with a strange look on their faces, then one said “I didn‘t know your beach featured a fair.” Then I looked around with that thought and I realized it did look like a fair, with all the flags and the tents. I laughed and told

her, no it was not a fair but the flags were a way for family members to find the others in their group and the tents made it easier to stake a claim with a little space around them. As I was explaining that to her, I saw my son in the distance bringing our family flag down to us. My friend was puzzled when she saw that it had a giant clothespin graphic on it. I shared this story of the clothespin with her. “Many years ago we had young cousins by the dozens and the family always used any excuse to get together for dinner or a party. In those days, not every house had a clothes dryer, so clothes lines were set up in backyards. While the grown ups prepared the food and enjoyed their cocktails, the cousins played out back. Somewhere along the line they invented a game that involved hiding clothes pins and pinning some on unsuspecting relatives. Of course this was to the chagrin of the mother who had to hang laundry the next day. As the cousins got older they brought their game a step further. Whenever the family had a social event eg: graduations, weddings, birthdays etc. they would purchase a bag of clothespin and pin them on someone, who would walk around not having a clue that he had a clothespin on his shirt or other article of clothing. It would be funny to see a prim and proper person strutting around with a clothespin hanging from her hem and not knowing why she was attracting so much attention. At one wedding the master of ceremonies liked the idea so much he said he was going to share it with his other clients. As the years went by we called ourselves the Clothespin Clan and of course we always brought along a bag of clothespins when we were invited to anything.” When we decided the family needed our own landmark flag, cousin Fran and her daughter Alexa designed our flag and cousin Rob put it together. My friends loved the story and enjoyed all the unique flags and banners. They said they will have another interesting thing to talk about when they tell others about their North Wildwood weekend.

“I found my happy place the minute I saw you.”

My Heaven. . . Paradise. . . Happy Place

submitted by ronn rodden Postcards from the Wildwood Museum

Ronn’s mother souvenier shopping

Ronn’s Grandparents, Aunt and Cousins Wildwood NJ, 1941 I was born on May 1, 1969 and spent my very first summer in Wildwood, NJ with my parents Ronn & Jo. My first motel stay was the Satellite. That started it all… My Heaven, Paradise, Happy Place. Every year from then until 1988, my Dad worked summer weekends for Coca Cola and saved for our week’s vacation. We stayed at many motels like Pan Am, Cara Mara, Crusader, and the list goes on. We also took day trips whenever possible, always to Wildwood. The smell of the air, the sand, the boardwalk, and the ocean waves crashing provided such good memories. We traveled around the island and always found new things. Wildwood ALWAYS has new things to show, from the back bay and the restaurants to all the shops. I remember spins on the Jumbo Jet and the Himalaya and, of course, the unforgettable, “Watch the Tram Car Please.” From 1988 to 2001, I would head to the shore sporadically with my kids Christina, Alexandra and Nicholas, building great memories for them. Fast forward to the year 2011, when my girlfriend Jonna and I, on a day trip for my birthday, ended up in Wildwood. What a birthday that was! She loved it! Since 2014, we’ve made Wildwood our annual summer week’s vacation, creating memories for our daughter Veronica (b.6/14/2013) and Jonna’s daughter Victoria. Recently, we’ve stayed at the Aztec and Gondolier. We love our all-you-can-eat crabs at Urie’s, our slices of pizza at Mack’s, and our breakfasts at Vegas Diner. My two grown daughters spend time in Wildwood occasionally along with my two grandkids, Julia and Adam, who also LOVE it, making for another generation building their own Wildwood Memories. Thanks to social media, I stay connected to Wildwood daily. Since I live 145 miles away, I subscribe to The Sun by-the-Sea to get a taste of Wildwood. Being shore lovers, I proposed to Jonna on June 15th, 2016 in Cape May at the SS Atlantus and gave her a Cape May Diamond for her engagement ring. We’re planning a Wildwood beach wedding in 2017, with our families here to enjoy our special day. I’m glad I get to share my small part of Wildwood history alongside those of so many generations of Wildwood lovers…

Leo & Cass in a park on Magnolia Ave. after Sunday Mass at St. Ann’s, 1955

Is 13 an unlucky number? Not for Cass Candello and Leo Wlodarczyk because they met on the 13th Street beach in North Wildwood approximately back in 1947 when the beach wasn’t so crowded. Cass left Philadelphia around 1942 with her small son, Vincent, for North Wildwood to grieve for her recently deceased husband, Joseph Candello. With $1,000 in savings, Cass was able to get a $2,000 mortgage on a small bungalow in North Wildwood not too far from the Bay. Life was simple in North Wildwood then – no phone, no TV. There was a man selling fish for 50 cents each, an egg man, a neighboring farm, and kind neighbors who never hesitated to help each other. My father, Leo, was recuperating from a leg wound from Normandy Beach and staying at a boarding house on 13th Street. As my mother used to jokingly say, Leo needed a home and she needed a handyman and a father or Vincent, but they were an attractive couple and fell very much in love. They married and divided their time living in Philadelphia and North Wildwood. Family from Philadelphia were always visiting and staying at the shore house. During the 1950’s, my dad loved to fish, go crabbing, and maintain their neat yard. Leo had a small handmade table by the side of the house where he meticulously cleaned and cut into filets all the catch of the day. Summer evenings

growing up were filled with walks to the Bay, the boardwalk, an occasional movie, ice cream at Stern’s Grocery/Candy Store, or the ice cream fountain on 17th St. Not having a car, we were used to walking everywhere, though I was partial to riding the double decker bus that circled the island. Family boat rides along the Bay with my dad to enjoy the summer sunsets are a treasured memory. After working and living in Philadelphia, it was my dad’s dream to come back to Wildwood, perhaps buy another boat and resume his second favorite pastime – fishing (the first being ice skating). Sadly, he passed away at 71 and my mother followed him 25 years later. My dreamer’s head was filled with magical tales of Wildwood, and the early childhood days of freedom and carefree living. Cass used to tell me that Wildwood was the summer playground for the Indians who had made trails to the ocean (Route 9), and that eventually the first roads were built from their trails. Leo would tell us stories of the pirates and Diamond Beach. We would spend hours digging in the sand hoping to find gold bullion and diamonds. Family geography lessons about Wildwood and other shore points being islands were given at an early age. Time has moved on. My parents told me it didn’t snow in Wildwood. There used to be more hotels and bakeries; the clubs I went to are gone (except for the Shamrock). It took a long time, but I am back in paradise dividing my time between North Cape May and Wildwood and loving it.

Lounge Singer, Pat Peterson aka Patti Callan

Tony Christian with Pat & Pete at Valentino’s 1964. Tony & Pat performed together

Pat & Pete mid-1970s

The Callahan family

Patti Callahan Peterson was one of five daughters born into an Irish Catholic family. At the age of 18, she won Miss Northeast Philadelphia pageant from Times newspaper. A recruiter was in the audience and offered her a job with a group called The Twisters. From there she began traveling the country, much to her father’s dismay. Patti ended up in Vegas with this group, and then switched to a group called Mike Pedecini Quintet, appearing around Delaware county and Steele’s Ship Bar in Somers Pt. After leaving this group, she went on to sing with a group called Frankie Mayo and the New Yorkers, working in New York, and then on a USO trip to Thule, Greenland, to entertain 6500 troops. After her time in the arctic cold, Patti headed to the sunny shore, where she would spend the summer of ‘64 in Wildwood by-the-Sea. She then got a job at Phil and Eddie’s Surf Club where she waitressed. She had rented a room at the Hofbrau hotel, and then Rita Simone, the owner of Valentino’s, offered her a job waitressing and singing with Tony Christian. But it was at the Surf Club where she met a handsome young man who was a bouncer at the club, Big Pete Peterson as he was called. They fell in love at first sight and had their first date on July 4, 1964 and were married on November 29, 1964. In October 1965 they had their first child, then two more after that. Pat and Pete lived happily ever after for almost 40 years. With many ups and downs along the way, she fondly remembers how their story all began in their little sandy slice of heaven by-the-sea, Wildwood New Jersey. In the years that followed, Pat got involved in local politics and was elected as the first woman on the Middle Township committee on November 4, 1980. She was the first woman to run the public works department. After five years when she was not reelected, Patti went back to her normal job as a mother and wife. She also continued to waitress at the Merion Inn in Cape May for 10 years. After that she went to work at the hospital with Dr. Prahbakar for 16 years when she finally retired after numerous illnesses and the death of her beloved husband Pete. What a wonderful and memorable life she has had in Cape May County. Today she is loving her retirement!

Sue Walden. Photographer. Beautiful Soul 12/16/16

In typical Sun by-the-sea fashion, much

colorful collaboration went into creating our epic summer cover ~ a moment captured in time by our dear beloved friend and amazing photographer Sue Walden. Sue, Megan Rogers and Sun editor Dorothy Kulisek teamed up with a group of local teens to display the ultimate road trip to everyone’s favorite, sandiest destination, Wildwood by-the-sea, NJ. They arrived courtesy of the 1966 VW Bus named GypSea, the island’s newest retro Photo Booth bus designed for pure fun in the sun. Also in standard SUN style, our young models channeled the nostalgia residing within every true Wildwood lover with their timeless beach attire and the sheer enthusiasm that comes from finally reaching our seaside slice of paradise in the coolest form of transportation… outside of a surfboard, that is. Back in The Sun’s early days, when shooting our summer covers, we would set up our models in their vintage swimwear and pretend it was a hot, sunny day, which took a bit of effort considering the days of our shoot were typically freezing cold, windy spring days! Since so much effort goes into making our cover photos as authentic as possible, we eventually transitioned to doing our shoots “in season” instead of out, which is why we shot the Summer 2017 cover

back in August 2016. Being published posthumously, Sue Walden’s photo is now even more of a treasure in the sun. On the flip side of our summer cover, from the archives of Aladdin Color, shines an original 1960s photograph of a group of teens at the Gondolier Motel in Wildwood Crest (which happily is still located at Lavender Avenue & the beach). David Bard began Aladdin in 1953 during the motel building boom. He created many of the colored postcards & brochures of Wildwood back in the day. Naturally, because we here at The Sun are the biggest fans of all things retro, it is only fitting to feature these works of art together, as Mr. Bard’s photos have been the inspiration behind many of The Sun’s cover photos!!

Dear Fellow Anglers Hello and Welcome to the fish story column. I hope all you serious anglers have followed the drama in regards to the Marine fisheries fish regulations. I am glad to see the government officials joining the fight for some practical applications of these regulations. Congressman Lobiondo and New Jersey DEP Director have been supportive. I believe fishermen want fair regulation based on proof and facts, not the misdirected and unsuccessful management plan of the Marine Fisheries. Basic civic courses tell you that any law which is not viewed as fair and equal by the public is doomed to fail. These regulations are turning sportsmen into violators who frequently say they are fed up with the treatment of anglers by Marine Fisheries. What a shame for all. Moving on, Mother Nature hasn’t been kind to the fishermen in the early part of the season for Stripers, Seabass and Drum fish. Not that the fish haven’t been biting, but the wind has been making it difficult for small boats. Hopefully, the summer season will abate that problem. The Delaware Bay Drum provided a great bite in the April Full Moon. Most of the Drum fish will be out of the bay by the end of June. July and August will bring the smorgasbord of species into our waters. Since the Seabass will be limited, the Fluke will become #1 target for most inshore boats. Bluefish should be available in the ocean and back bays. Larger Weakfish in the spring brings hope they will appear in good numbers and size throughout the summer. Wreck fishing in August should produce some Trigger fish in addition to the normal catch of Seabass, Blues, and Fluke. Fishing at night near docks, jetties and bridges can be really successful for Blues, Weaks, and Stripers. The inshore waters will come alive with Croakers, Kingfish and small Blues. All provide great fun for the youngsters. Most of the local Bait &Tackle shops will be helpful in techniques and locations that are producing fish. I believe the offshore anglers dream for these months. All the pelagic species arrive such as Tuna, Billfish, and Mahi. I realize an offshore canyon trip can be expensive, but the exotic fishing, the unique environment, and the whole visual experience can be something you will remember forever. Late August Mahi, Cobia, and Tuna will venture inshore generally 20 to 30 miles off Cape May. Passion for sports like fishing can be very difficult to explain. Often I watch my wife’s eyes roll back in her head as I talk about my experiences. I just leave it to the pros to make the case for my passion. Henry David Thoreau, one of nature’s premier authors stated, “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” So, go wild in our little part of the world! …and better yet, share the exFIND A MISTAKE? perience with a loved one. It is our pocily to include something for everyone. God bless, Since some people like to find errors, we reglularly include a few in our plubications.

New Cutting Edge Program at Wildwood Catholic HS —The future of the business world belongs to those who master the intricacies of technology. Students at Wildwood Catholic High School will be those masters. Currently, juniors and seniors are signing up for a new cutting-edge technology program that will roll out in September. By the time they finish the first Theresa loves reading The Sun in the sun of this two-year program, they will be highly employable in coveted summer positions in dozens of businesses. When they graduate after completing both years, their resumes will land on top as they search for career jobs. Or, if they choose, they’ll also be well-equipped to start their own businesses. By Bob Ingram The last place she should be was on the

10 Street beach in North Wildwood even if it was the most beautiful day of the summer so far, the sand a comforting white against the twin blues of the sky and sea while a smiling sun soared over its tanned and happy worshippers. But her best friend Carrie had said that maybe a couple days at the beach would unlock the block that had settled over her nearly due project like a fog bank in July. She just couldn’t get untracked. Ideas came and went, fluttering like erratic butterflies, none though ringing that tiny inner bell that would tell her to push forward, that success was more than a shadow now. It was only a three-minute exercise for her freshman summer dance class, but she was majoring in dance at the University of the Arts and this would be the first real test to see if she was on the right track or only following a romantic obsession that had been with her since she was nine and was transfixed by the Pennsylvania Ballet’s presentation of Swan Lake. She was blessed with the compact, yet willowy body of the classical dancer and had studied various dance forms since that Swan Lake epiphany with the whole-hearted support of her parents, who had gladly undergone both the financial and logistical rigors of supporting a budding dancer. And her last teacher, herself a former Pennsylvania Ballet dancer, had encouraged her dream of a classical dance career, but had also advised her to pursue a college degree, thus her current dance dilemma. “Just let your mind go blank,” Carrie said, after they’d settled in their beach chairs. “Maybe something will just float in or pop in, you know? I mean you’ve been obsessing over this ever since we left Philly. It’s only three minutes, after all.” “Easy for you to say,” she said. “You try it. My mind is too busy to just turn th

it off and go blank like some Zen yogi or something. I only have a couple days before I have to present it and they even want some kind of sketches of the moves and the right music for it. And I’m empty. Nothing’s there. And on top of that I’m feeling guilty for coming down the shore.” “Let’s go for a walk then,” Carrie said. “Might as well,” she said. “At least I’ll get some exercise.” They had been walking for about twenty minutes and were nearing the Ferris wheel when they noticed many of the beachgoers looking out to sea and pointing and excitedly talking. Just beyond the breakers a large pod of dolphins was skimming happily along, their dorsal fins gliding like silent rhythmic rudders. They stopped and followed the flowing , graceful cadre of dolphins, smiling to each other and nodding in appreciation. Then, lo and behold, three what appeared to be young, frisking dolphins turned toward the beach and made three sets of perfectly timed tandem leaps, breaking from the water together as if in a show at Seaworld. Spontaneously, the people on the beach applauded. As if in response, the dolphins performed again to even more applause, which brought an encore of soaring before the frisky trio headed back to the pod. “Wow!” said Carrie. “Did you ever see anything like that? Hey, what are laughing at?” “Because I’ve got it! They’re the answer. I’ve got it all in my head right now. I’m going to call it ‘Dolphin Dances’ and I’ll use three dancers and Debussy’s La Mer for the music. Come on. Let’s get back. I can’t wait to sketch it.” “Aren’t you going to thank me?” Carrie said. And they headed back up the beach.

A short time ago I was listening to a

“golden oldies” station and came upon a song written and recorded by American country singer Roger Miller. Chug-A-Lug was recorded in 1964, and the lyrics included “Grape wine in a Mason jar” and the discovery of a big old barn where “we uncovered a covered-up moonshine still”. While the song was a humorous reminiscence of youthful encounters, it was reminiscent of an actual time that took place in these United States called Prohibition and The Wildwoods were dry or so they were supposed to be. In October, 1919, Congress passed the National Prohibition Act; the legislation was more commonly known as the Volstead Act. Both federal and local government struggled to enforce Prohibition over the course of the 1920s, but Wildwood’s harbors and shoreline made it a bootlegger’s dream. In a 1982 article from the Atlantic City Press, a local builder and club owner, Ben Lauriello purchased a wooden building at 501 Montgomery Avenue in Wildwood. While he was tearing out a wall, he found two rubber hoses. He traced the hoses up through the wall until they ended underneath two 1926 newspapers. Under the newspapers he found a copper tank wrapped in burlap. The tank is reportedly a remnant of the building’s heyday as a speakeasy and brothel. Local sources reported to the Atlantic City Press that Lauriellos building had once housed a speakeasy called Chester Dick’s Harbor Inn. Lauriello eventually found two copper tanks embedded in the wall. The larger one is about three and a half inches thick— the thickness of the wall—and would hold an estimated 20 gallons. The smaller one holds about five gallons. Each had hoses running down to the first floor and up to the attic. The tanks were used to hide illegal whiskey from federal and state agents. Proprietors of the establishment apparently funneled whiskey into the hidden tanks from the attic. The hoses ran to the first floor, where customers presumably filled their glasses. The

WILDWOODS copper tank on display at the museum has a series of puncture holes in it. In my conversation with Ben Lauriello, it was explained to him that they were bullet holes made by agents during a raid. They would know about these concealed tanks and fire at the walls looking for them. This tank was either empty or not full enough to reveal it’s hiding place. According to Stanley Gage of the Wildwood Crest Historical Society, at that time, “Wildwood was a pretty wild, open town during the 1920s.” Boats rendezvoused with mother ships to bring illegal Canadian whiskey into the harbors, which were ringed with speakeasies. Like many speakeasies of the day, Chester Dick’s Harbor Inn was also reportedly a brothel. In reviewing some verbal history made by the late Mayor Doris Bradway who served as Mayor of Wildwood from 1933 to 1938, she fired the entire police department during the prohibition period. She claimed they were engineering bringing in the booze and one detective had a “stable of girls”. In searching her memory, she recalls the old houses of Cedar Avenue that had 4 and 5 story houses, some of which served as brothels and “maybe a saloon or two in there.” The detective did business with someone that reported it to the mayor and she had the girls brought in and they said “Sure!” It seems he was supplying the women for the men, and men for the women, so she fired him. According to the Bradway tapes, the police detective took her to court, but “they didn’t put him back because the court said I was right.” In the meantime, the rest of the police were doing everything they could to undermine her authority. According to the Mayor, they were all born here and had something called “natives’ rights” or “some such thing” In addition to her run-in with the Police Department, Mayor Bradway tangled with the Fire Department and fired them. In her words, “Of course, I fired all the firemen. They used to run a gambling den

The “Dew Drop Inn”. We’re unsure of who owned it during Prohibition, but later it became the property of Bill and Bea Martin, and was called “Captain Bill Martin’s”

Meg the Movie Buff Goes to Hollywood

HARBOR

2017 summer MOVIE GUIDE

S

by Meg Corcoran

ummer by the sea promises blockbuster-in-the-making stories featuring sunny beach days, starry boardwalk nights and our favorite, coastal-loving celebrities, all destined to blend together as effortlessly as the sun and the surf. Surfing into town with that all-star cast, The Hitman’s Bodyguard is ready to play the lead role of lifeguard with an assist from Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, all blissfully revolving around the one-andonly city of Wildwood, NJ. Inspired by so much comradery, the War for the Planet of the Apes is on an indefinite beach break, with boogie board races offering the most challenging battle. Freedom from the challenges that come with illegal activities has left Logan (feeling) Lucky he’s found true fortune in seaside fun. Before taking that fortunate Leap! to the nearest seaside movie theater, please check your local listings for release date changes… Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is still struggling to create balance in his life as Spider-Man: (finding a moment during his) Homecoming (opens July 7th) for typical teenage fun like watching FREE Movies on the Beach alongside Captain America (Chris Evans). A couple (Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara) living within A Ghost Story (opens July 7th) of their own deal with life, death, the surreal spirit world and the constant creepy feelings one experiences during a nonstop trip on the Ghost Ship. A distraught Caesar (Andy Serkis) leads a War for the Planet of the Apes (opens July 14th) against the humans, led by an elusive Colonel (Woody Harrelson) who got in fighting shape courtesy of the Downtown Wildwood Fitness in the Plaza. When threatened by evil forces, special operative Laureline (Cara Delevingne) discovers fellow agent Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Dane DeHaan, opens July 21 st) battling an unknown threat before conquering one-of-a-kind The Great Nor’Easter. Within The Emoji Movie (opens July 28th), emotions are running wild for a supposedly-emotionless emoji (voice of T.J. Miller), sending him on an expressive journey through numerous apps to fix his code alongside a fellow emoji (voice of Anna Faris), with just enough time to get

to the always exciting Christmas in July with Santa Claus. Desperate to save his dying world, The Gunslinger (Idris Elba) searches for the man in black (Matthew McConaughey) as well as the legendary Dark Tower (opens August 4th), following the light created by Friday Night Fireworks on the Beach. A grieving dollmaker (Anthony LaPaglia) invites orphans into his home, where they soon cross paths with Annabelle: (his horrifyingly-possessed) Creation (opens August 11th), who observes little value in the childlike creativity abounding at the Sidewalk Chalk Competition. On their way to the International Court of Justice, and with no time for a friendinspiring round of Baseball on the Beach, The Hitman’s Bodyguard (Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds, opens August 18th) must stay one step ahead of an assassin (Gary Oldman). An Around the Island Row would be a more law-abiding adventure for the Logan brothers (Channing Tatum and Adam Driver, hoping they get) Lucky (opens August 18th) during a NASCAR race heist. A shoo-in at the Wildwood Talent Showcase, an orphan (voice of Elle Fanning) dreams of becoming a ballerina before taking the Leap! (opens August 30th) to Paris and the Grand Opera House. As the Dark Tower rises over a bright summer night, the most interesting characters come out to play. Leading the movie pack is Spider-Man (whose) Homecoming naturally revolves around slinging his web from pier to pier, connecting with the coolest thrill rides. Atop the Giant Wheel, he spots Annabelle: (a terrifying) Creation who’s obsessed with KONG (hoping the infamous beast will come magically to life much like herself). She soon discovers A Ghost Story can’t compete with real live G-rated entertainment. Switching courses, she joins the cast of The Emoji Movie, who are experiencing every cheery emotion thanks to sugary boardwalk treats and countless rounds of skeeball. As the summer sails on, epic stories within a picturesque setting write themselves, with our biggest stars happily playing their part right here by the beautiful, scenestealing sea…

{ARCHIVE: 2007, Vol. 4} Sr. Albertine, born in Abington, PA., joined the Sisters of St. Joseph order of nuns in 1950. In 1983, she came to St. Ann’s Convent in Wildwood where she taught as their 4th grade teacher. That experience supplied Sr. Albertine with countless stories she lovingly recalled in the pages of The SUN. In addition to being a unique teacher/ storyteller, Sr. Albertine also became known as a daredevil. Morey Organization employee Jim Kirk was taking care of maintenance work on the roof of the Pan Am Motel one day in the summer of 2007 when he offered Sr. Albertine a lift (and

a more scenic view of the island). She eagerly accepted, calling it one of the best thrills of her life (rivaled only by her trip on our boardwalk’s Great White Rollercoaster on Morey’s Adventure Pier). The photos here, supplied by Jim Kelly, are proudly labeled, “Sr. Albertine’s Great Adventure.” Sr. Albertine retired in 2010 and moved into the St. Joseph Villa convent at Flourtown, PA to be closer to her sister. We miss seeing her happy smile. She enjoys receiving The SUN via mail. We extend a huge, heartfelt, hug and kiss to our favorite nun. There’s NUN like you Sr. Albertine!

“To live an extraordinary life, you must resist an ordinary approach.”

Oops! Pardon Me!

It was a simple trek that I set out upon one fine summer day. I wanted to walk down to the ocean, take a dip and then head back home. When I arrived at the beach I noticed a football flying through the air but paid it no mind until I set foot on the hot sand. Then, the next thing you know, a wall of bare chested teenage boys came charging towards me formed into the letter V in front of a scrawny kid running with that same football tucked under one arm. “Hey, watch it, mister!” somebody yelled from behind me. I turned my head and saw a second wall of boys bearing down on the kid with the football, clouds of sand rising with every step. I must have had that deer-in-the-headlights look, trapped in the middle of these sandlot suicide squads. The defenders plowed on and caught the running back, bringing him down by a shove into the sand. When the runner landed, the ball squirted out. “Fumble!” a defender shouted. “No way, it’s first down!” an opponent argued. The running back, covered with sand, sprang to his feet and pointed at the sand. “Down by contact!” he yelled. “The ground caused the fumble.” The argument continued. I moved on. Further along, at the point where the dry white sand turns slate grey, I stepped over a crudely drawn line in the sand, the kind

you might make with a clam shell or by dragging your big toe behind you, and discovered that I was standing in the center of a makeshift paddle ball court. I looked left and right: just behind the baselines stood the participants in what appeared to be a boy vs. girl matchup, the paddles resting on one hip while they stared at me with a “Do you mind?” look. “Sorry,” I replied with a sheepish grin as I stepped off the court. At last, almost to the water! Suddenly, a ball rolls past me. It is red and bigger than a softball but I don’t recognize it. I follow its path as it passes by and see that it has come to a stop about 2 ft. away from another ball, this one colored white and a little bit bigger than a golf ball. Nearby is another colored ball, about 3 ft. away from the white ball. Wait, I know this game. Bocce! I played this at a picnic once. Downfield, about 20 ft. away, a group of older gentlemen are glaring at me. I look down at my feet: one bad step could result in the alteration of the path of the ball, like stepping on someone’s putting line in golf. Carefully stepping off of their makeshift court I nod and wave as if to say “oops! pardon me!” and head straight for the waves. Bobbing on the crest of the waves I scan the beach to plot my route back and conclude that it might be a good idea if I move down a block or two before I start for home.

Many of the old photos that fill the pages of The SUN came from family albums where little black triangular holders on each corner held them in place; some lay in shoeboxes or in bureau drawers next to old chenille bedspreads for years, or in an envelope from the local film processing counter. We thank you for taking the time to dig them out and send them in, some with their ‘Wildwood story’, we cherish them and feel very honored to publish them. “Oh baby, every day’s a holiday and every night is a Saturday night!” ~Wildwood Days, Bobby Rydell

I Remember… by George Latella Like so many readers of The Sun, I always enjoy the personal stories, looking at the old pictures and feeling like I am a part of those experiences. It seems like we all can relate in some way to the sounds of the ocean, the boardwalk, the excitement of the amusements, the beach, the laughter and noise, etc. What do I Remember? I remember those early years when I was only 6 or 7, coming down Rt. 555 / 557……The Delsea Drive……..into the Wildwoods from Rt. 47….I remember the excitement getting my first glimpse of the boardwalk and straining my neck to see the ocean and waves as we got closer to our destination. Back then, we only spent about 5 or 6 days, sometimes with my father’s cousin who lived on 15th Street between Surf and Atlantic. He actually built that house, and three more on the beach block in the 1940s……I think, if I remember, he only paid $50. for each lot!!!! Can you believe that?? Waking up the first morning was like Christmas morning. My brother and I were up at the crack of dawn waking my mother and father and getting ready for the beach. With my bucket and shovel and blanket (we didn’t have beach chairs or umbrellas then!) off we went to spend the whole day on the beach. I don’t even remember using sunscreen! My mother would make some sandwiches and drinks and we stayed until 5:00PM. In and out of the water all day and never tiring. At night after dinner, we would walk the boards and smell all the aromas which were a delight: pizza, hot dogs, cotton candy, peanuts, popcorn, saltwater taffy and ice cream. I remember how fast 5 or 6 days flew by and our short vacation came to an end and we had to return to Philadelphia. How depressed I would get having to wait until next summer. But we made some unforgettable memories. I remember as the years passed, my love of Wildwood grew and grew, vowing someday, I would spend the whole summer instead of 6 days. In 1961, while playing in a band, we auditioned at the then famous “Moores Inlet Club” in N. Wildwood. My wish came true!!!! We were hired for the entire summer. That was the beginning of the next 40 years of performing in the Wildwoods every summer. I remember most of the Bands and Acts of that era. If you are over 60 years old, you may remember: Steve Gibson, Steve Lawlor, and The Red Caps, Damita Jo, The Untouchables, Georgie Young, The Day Bros, The High Hopes, The Quaker City Boys, The Cousins, The McGraw Bros, The Gigilos, The Matys Bos, The Playboys, Frankie Brent Revue, Al and Jet Lorring, Fisher and Marks, Georgie Latin and The Showboys, (that’s me!) and of course the unforgettable Cozy Morley. I remember all the good times we had, all the friends we made, many are gone, but the memories will go on forever. Now, in my 70’s, I sit on the beach, with my lovely wife Cookie of over 50 years still by my side, enjoying the summer breezes, the water, the seagulls scavenging for food, the children running and playing and the tourist enjoying their one week vacation and soaking up as much sun as they can get before they return home. Although I really enjoy my son and grandchildren visiting in the summer, I can’t help but look forward to Labor Day when all the tourists go home and “we get the Island back”. Then I get to enjoy the Fall and Winter until next year. I guess this means I am Old!........But, I still remember!

Andrew & mother Dolores, 2010

Our family time in Wildwood began in the early 1930’s when my maternal Great grandmother, Sarah MacNamara, first rented a place in Wildwood Crest from the Abilinie family. When my mother Dolores Kearney was very young her family rented places in the city proper on Maple & Poplar. She remembers great times on the beach, the little train ride on the boardwalk, famous carousel, & feeding baby bears with a bottle for 5 cents, the annual bucket & shovel (made of tin in those days), Groff’s family restaurant, water ice in a glass bowl with silver spoon, giant toy store on boardwalk & “surprise boxes” from the 5 & 10¢ store on Pacific Ave for 25¢ containing many surprises inside. Fresh flounder cooked for breakfast with snowflake rolls & crumb buns from the famous bakery. In later years they had places on Juniper & 26th Ave. My grandfather Vincent D. Kearney had to run his plumbing business in Philly, & was only there on weekends, my grandmother Emma was head of the house in Wildwood, with invited relatives turning up through out the summer. In those days they had to heat water on the stove for everyday after beach baths, & the ice man cometh to keep the food cold. Since my mother’s birthday is August 8th, one of her biggest thrills was when her father brought from Philly a special gift, one year it was a tea cart with cups & saucers etc., another year a dog on wheels to ride, & another time a red & white kangaroo to hug. They rented bathing suits at the bathhouses

on the boardwalk for 10 cents! As the family grew and World War II came, my Aunt Dottie’s fiancee, my Uncle Ed Donnelly joined the Air Corps, my mom would go with her older sister to the Bang Bang in the arcade to dance with a stand in for the man in her life, they would always have a hot dog afterwards on toasted buns, a pickle slice & mustard of course. Waffles & ice cream was also a big deal. My father Jack Brough helped his Uncle Elmer on a fishing boat when he was 14-15 years old in the 1940’s. My parents spent three days of their honeymoon in 1950 at the Sheldon Hotel, arriving by train. In the 1960’s my Mom & Dad, Aunt Bettie & Uncle Don with 5 kids under the age of 4 years old, rented a place where the doorway was so narrow, they had to fold the baby buggy to get through, the buggy served as a bed for one of my sisters. Times passed, people passed, weddings took place, babies were born, & sadly my family drifted away from Wildwood. In the 1990’s my sister Dolores returned to Wildwood at 13th Ave. with her husband Willy Bertoti & son Christopher. My brother Andrew & his wife Dien bought some real estate in Wildwood & opened a store at Pacific & Cresse where his children, Dolores, Maria, Jackie & Andrew worked in summer. Family, friends & Wildwood, perfect together!

“To everything - turn, turn, turn, there is a season - and a time for every purpose under heaven.” - Ecclesiastes 3,The Byrds

Hunt’s Theaters by Steve Murray

All photos on this page are courtesy of George Boyer Museum, Wildwood, N.J

Some of my best memories of the Wildwoods of my

youth (1960’s- early 1970’s) were those times spent in any of the six individual movie theaters owned by the Hunts Corporation. In case you are new comers or not old enough to remember, that’s right, there were once six movie theaters in Wildwood. Going north to south, there was the Ocean Theater, located on the boardwalk between Poplar and Juniper Avenues. The Strand, on the boardwalk between Pine and Maple. The Casino, just off the boardwalk at Cedar and Atlantic. The Blaker, on the boardwalk near the Cedar Ave. ramp. The Shore, at Schellenger and Atlantic and the Regent, on the boardwalk at Garfield. My fond recollections aren’t just based on the fact that so many outstanding and classic films were released during those years, but also on the theaters themselves and the whole movie “experience” of that era. Hunts theaters (the interiors), were absolutely beautiful, The foyers, lobbies, and main theater areas were designed with great artistic detail given to doors, wall coverings, mirrors, lighting, carpeting, stage curtains and all of the various other interior features. They had an Art Deco look about them even though they were built at a later period- late1930’s-40’s. (the exception was the Ocean which was much newer than the rest) Their elegance was reminiscent of a fancy opera house, but truthfully, most movie houses in the Country were of similar design in those days.. These theaters were humongous compared to today’s tiny (and ugly) multi- plex boxes. I would say they could each seat about 1,000 people. The Strand was the biggest and I bet it could hold almost twice that. I’ve never seen better operated theaters, even in Philadelphia and other more populated areas I’ve lived in, than those owned by Hunts. They were somehow able to always get top ten, first run movies as quick as those theaters back home. They were extremely well managed and staffed and were impeccably clean as well. Hunts had a phone number that you could call to get a pre- recorded listing of all the films they were

showing on any particular week, along with show times and any upcoming films. I can’t believe I still remember that number, at least 30 years since I last dialed it- 522 3838. Going to the movies in those days, whether you were a kid or an adult, was a much different experience than it is today. As soon as you walked through those lobby doors into the dimly lit but elegant setting, you really felt you were in a special place. First greeted by a uniformed ticket taker, you were than escorted (if you needed help) by a uniformed usher with a flashlight who would take you to your seat. Tasteful “muzak” would be playing throughout the building while you waited for the show to begin. For years Hunts theme music was an instrumental version of “On The Street Where You Live”, from My Fair Lady. The music stopped as the curtains opened to reveal a huge movie screen. I’m not sure, but I would guess they were sixty to seventy five feet wide. When you watched a movie in a dark theater on a screen this size , you were “there”, even without the I max technology. Many times things would start out with the “Movietone News”, a short reel of some noteworthy highlights of U.S or World news. Next up might be a “travelogue”, another short documentary of some interesting place to visit, like Flamingo Gardens Florida or Knotts Berry Farm in California. If lucky, you would be treated to a cartoon, usually more geared toward adults if it was an evening show. Finally, it was show time for real. There were so many fantastic films produced in those days- Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Birds, The Longest Day, Spartacus, The Manchurian Candidate, The Godfather, Patton and on and on. Some of these films were so long they were stopped half way for an “intermission”. Music would play (usually theme music from the movie) and the audience was given a chance to stretch their legs, use the bathroom and more importantly, visit the snack bar. One or two of the theaters would be dedicated to just a single blockbuster film for an entire summer. I

remember West Side Story being shown at The Regent, three times a day, for the entire 1962 season. All of the theaters, except for the Shore, were only open during the summer months. I spent all of my summer vacations at my grandparents home in North Wildwood but my folks still came down frequently in the winter months. I always made sure to catch whatever movie was playing at the Shore during those visits. This was especially true for Saturday matinees. These kiddie fests were a always a blast. The featured films were usually something from Disney (Son Of Flubber), Science Fiction (The Time Machine), Horror (The 13 Ghosts), adventure ( Jason And the Argonauts) or comedy (The Three Stooges in Orbit). Admission when I was 8 years old was 50 cents. Sometimes there would even be a double feature. Movies back then were still done on film. God help the projectionist if it broke during one of these kid filled afternoon shows. When these matinee movies ended and the curtains closed, I remember joining a swarm of kids that always exited from a rear door that opened into an ally filled with trash cans. From here, this band of carb and sugar loaded boys, all yelling and screaming, would, like a prison break, climb up onto the deserted boardwalk to go home the long way and probably re -enact some scenes from the movie we had just watched. Sadly, by the time I reached my late 20’s, many of these big and beautiful theaters had long been cut up into twins. Not long after this, one by one, they all closed down. At this time, there isn’t a single movie theater on the Island. I haven’t been to a movie theater in 20 years. I’m not crazy about most films made today --- more computerized special effects and unnecessary violence than story line. I also hate the tiny screens of the multi plexes and the thin walls that sometimes let you listen to the film next door. I usually just wait until the few films I really do want to see are released on video. And thank God for The Turner Classic Movie Channel. What I wouldn’t pay to have a Hunts theater back again.

“Try and live your life the way you wish other people would live theirs.” ~ Raymond Burr

This page was taken from www. Funchase.com published by Ralph Grassi with a special thanks to The Wildwood Historical Society for the use of the photographs. You can view more pictures like these at Funchase and much more at the George F. Boyer Museum located at 3907 Pacific Avenue, Wildwood. (Funchase Copyright 2001 Ralph Grassi) the theatre to have a more modern look. The Blaker operated for many years and would eventually merge with The Shore Theatre to become the Shore Four. It wasn’t long after the theatre closed. It still stands today but is deteriorating rapidly. It is highly unlikely that this building will survive the wrecking ball.

2nd Casino theatre was destroyed by fire in 1939

The Casino theatre in 1971 In the early 1900’s the original Casino Theatre was known as the Airdrome and featured vaudeville acts. Under the direction of Bill Hunt the theatre was soon refurbished and became The Casino. This original building was destroyed by fire in 1922 but was quickly rebuilt for the following season. Once again The Casino was stuck by fire and destroyed on April 19, 1939. Hunt promptly rebuilt the Casino building that most of us remember. This new theatre had an ultra-modern art deco flair. Designed by architect William H. Lee and constructed by Joseph Scully the new 1,200 seat movie house opened on April 11, 1940. The Casino operated year round and was the classiest of all the theatres in the Wildwoods. In the early 1980’s the theatre was converted into a hugh video and pinball palace called The Hollywood Casino. It was quite an attraction and did well for a few years but was soon converted into the Photon laser tag arena. This new attraction didn’t last long and the building was eventually vacant and being used for storage. Sadly the Casino would never get another chance to entertain - The building was demolished in 1999 and another classic Wildwood structure was gone by way of the wrecking ball.

The original Regent Theatre was located at Atlantic and Lincoln Avenues. Bill Hunt purchased the theatre in 1921 and had it moved to the Boardwalk at Garfield Avenue. The original building was constructed of wood. In the mid 1940’s the theatre was reconstucted with concrete block. The Regent would undergo a major change in 1977 with the concept of the Boardwalk Mall. Commisioned by The Falk family ( of Falk’s Gift Shops on the Wildwood Boardwalk) and designed by the architectural firm of John Williamson the Regent was totally renovated to create over 30 stores within the shell of the old theatre. Some of the stores included “Edison Electric Body Lighting” - which sold flashing designer jewlery - and “Chucky Chuckles” - a magic and gag shop. The ground level was occupied by a large video and pinball arcade and an 18 hole miniature golf course. The apperance of the mall has changed over the years with the addition of a beautiful mural painted by world reknown marine artist Wyland. The seascape which graces the north and west walls of the mall was painted by the artist in 1993 while on his East Coast Tour.

Around 1900 - before the advent of moving pictures - the Blaker started out as an auditorium for vaudeville performances and was located on a pavilion owned by Gilbert Blaker on the Boardwalk at Cedar Avenue. In 1913 William C. Hunt leased the theatre from Blaker and subsequently purchased it in 1925. Hunt made several renovations over the years and remodeled

In the summer of 75’ the line to see Jaws stretched down the Cedar Avenue ramp and up Atlantic Avenue. This town went crazy...!

The original Strand Theatre pictured above dates back to around 1920. The theatre was located on the Boardwalk between Pine and Maple Avenue and was destroyed by fire on August 12, 1944. The new Strand was built in 1947, and opened on May 27th of that year. The new theatre had seating for 1,800 and would only open through the summer months. In 1986 Bud Hunt sold The Strand to the Frank Company- along with the nine other theatres owned by Hunt. The Strand was soon split into four theatres and lost its large lobby area and Boardwalk entrance to an arcade. The new main entrance would now be located on the Maple Avenue ramp which had originally been the main exit. The Strand still operates as a theatre in the summer and now features a laser shooting dark ride called Zombie World.

The Shore Theatre was designed by an architectural firm of Thalheimer and Weitz out of the Philadelphia area and opened on November 7, 1939. The movie complex was built to accommodate two stores - one on either side of the cinema. The north store was the business offices for Hunt’s Theatres Inc. - The south side was home to several businesses over the years including Tomi John’s and Mallin’s restaurants. Like the Casino, the Shore operated year round and had seating for 1,400. The Shore became a twin theatre in January of 1971 and eventually was paired (in name only) with the Blaker theatre which was located adjacent to the Shore. The two theatres would now operate under one name - the Shore Four. The Hunt’s sold the theatres along with the rest of the family enterprises in 1986. It continued to operate as a movie house under new ownership but eventually closed for good in the early 90’s. The property is now owned by the Morey organization and the theatre was demolished in January 2006.

Our Wildwood Home

and Irish Friends by Al “Butch” Love

Al Love with his Irish kids

Killian, Ingrid & friends

1942, 3 yr. old Al Love and his 7 yr. old sister Ann, with Uncle Gil Scott and Aunt Mary at their W. Glenwood Ave. home

Irish friends The Golden Years. A term most used when you get into the retirement mode. I’m not sure when the Golden Years are supposed to start, but I do have an idea when they will end. I still have memories but like the evening sun, they are starting to fade over the bay at sunset. There is a framed sketch of our Wildwood home hanging on the wall in front of me. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this beautiful penciled sketch is worthy of a warm memory. Over twenty years ago, Morey’s Organization started their pitch to hire young, overseas students for the piers on the boardwalk. During this time, most of the young people who came to Wildwood were from Ireland, where the job market was poor. Next door to our home, we have an apartment complex that provides housing for Morey’s employees and other summer workers. You would think that young people away from home for the first time would be indulging in drinking, music, parties, singing and noise. Well, they did to a degree. We overcame this by getting to know this one group. They returned for four summers and became like family to us. This group came from the same area in County Cork and knew one another well. Wildwood became their destination due to the change of plans of Fergal Cagney. At 18, he was sent by his parents to the States and told to spend the summer with his aunt and uncle in Connecticut. When he arrived in New York, he asked an airport employee where he could find

Drawing of the Love’s summer home by Killian Burke the best beach town on the East Coast for work. She told him Wildwood, where he, upon arrival, ironically ran into a lifeguard named Paul he knew from Cork. Fergal soon became a lifeguard. Then, his sister and the rest of their friends came and became our neighbors. They continued coming to Wildwood until completing their education back home or starting full time jobs elsewhere. They had Irish names such as Killian, Fergal, Orla, Ingrid, Joanne, and Yvonne. Fergal and his sister Orla were lifeguards in Wildwood, Killian worked with my son Jason, and the three girls had jobs as waitresses. We let them call home with phone credit cards before cell phones became popular. Sometimes they put their parents on to speak to us. Being part Irish myself, they won us over with their Irish charm. Killian Burke was extra special and became friends with my sons Jeff and Jason. Killian and Jason worked at Dad’s Place near the bridge at Grassy Sound. They helped customers with renting, fishing and crabbing boats at the dock. Killian was a loveable devil straight out of an Irish travel brochure. He spoke with an Irish brogue that was a little bit hard to understand at first, especially when he spoke too fast and worst when he had a pint or two in him! Then it sounded like a foreign language altogether. We could hear his alarm clock ringing in the morning through his open window when he overslept. Jason had to run over and wake him up for work! When the green-

head flies got so bad at Dad’s Place, Killian would run up the toll bridge and jump in the bay to get away from them, much to the chagrin of the toll collector. Then he’d swim back to the dock and continue working. The pranks they pulled during the season were hilarious. A neighbor across the street sold water ice cones from a small vehicle that had a large inflatable Spiderman attached to it. One early morning, we all woke up to see the Spiderman clinging outside the second-floor window of their apartment. Of course, the Irish kids did not know how it got there! The summer of 1999 was the last time we saw this group together. Most were leaving right after Labor Day. Some stayed in the United States and found jobs, Fergal enlisted in the US Marines, and the others headed back to Ireland. Only Killian and his close friend Fergal Cagney decided to stay till the end of September for the Irish Weekend Festivities. A few days before he planned to fly home to Ireland, Killian was involved in a serious accident and spent five days recuperating in an Atlantic City Hospital. My wife Sandi and I brought him into our home while he was still recuperating. My son Jeff had friends renting an apartment across the street from us on Glenwood Ave, where Killian spent some time. He was an art student in college and spent the next few days drawing and sketching on a pad on their porch. Ironically, this was the same house I wrote about in a

Sandi Love with her Irish girls previous Sun by The Sea story. That is where my friend Virginia stayed with her grandparents for eight summers starting when we were both ten years old. While Killian was recovering, we brought him to our home in Gloucester Township. The day he was leaving we all shared a lot of hugs. He presented us with a picture of our home that he sketched during the time he spent across the street while he was healing. It was a great gift that will forever remind me of the many memories I have of Wildwood and the people I have met. Thanks to Facebook, we have followed the activities of our Irish kids over the past twenty years. All six have families of their own now and display their kids’ pictures and birthdays on Facebook. Killian, Ingrid, and Yvonne are still living in Ireland. Joann is living in New York and Orla in California. Fergal enlisted in the Marines, was wounded in Afghanistan and is still in the service. They were a chapter in my life that I will cherish forever. Someday I hope their children also get a chance to spend a summer or two in the Wildwoods. Maybe they, too, can get summer jobs and stay at the apartments next to our house. Hopefully my young grandkids will meet them. On my bucket wish list is a visit to beautiful Ireland to meet the parents of those Irish kids. I would like to thank them for sharing their sons and daughters with my family for those unforgettable Wildwood summers.

Sr. Theresa, Peggy & Sr. Colette aboard the Sightseer The Wills family tradition of spending summer vacations in Wildwood technically began with three of the Brocato sisters during the summer of 1946. The girls stayed at the AlMarie apartments, which was approved by their mother because they advertised in the Catholic Review. Margherite and Teresa had already graduated, but Rose, however, was still in high school. The girls spent their week enjoying the beach, Boardwalk and other sites. Rose, unfortunately, enjoyed the beach a little too much and wound up bedridden with sun poisoning. Her sisters promised to buy her lunch on the boardwalk but when they returned without it , they reluctantly admitted, “a dog smelled what we had in the bag and started following us, so we threw him your hot dog and ran!” The sisters’ fear of dogs became legend, as did their love for summers by the sea, which Rose, despite her rocky seaside start, would eventually share with Dick, her husband-to-be!

Dick & Ruth Wills Honeymoon WILDWOOD BY-THE-SEA, N.J. 1954

Dick Wills always had the best of fun on the Wildwood beach... here is his version of the Sand Shark attack.

Postcard of Hotel Beach View where Dick & Ruth Wills spent their honeymoon.

Ruth Wills (bottom center) seized the moment when she saw a photographer taking photos, grabbing her own Brownie camera to take a photo of him! Unbeknownst to her, this simple act would forever be captured in time on this classic Wildwood souvenir postcard, published circa the 1960s. Fortunately, her daughter Peggy was able to buy some postcards on ebay over the years, enabling everyone in the family to have their own copy to remind them it was Ruth’s love of Wildwood that began their Wildwood story, and for that they are thankful.

Reddick’s at 3201 Pacific Ave. (Photo Wildwood Historic Museum)

On August 14, 1954, Dick & Rose Wills were married and spent their honeymoon in Wildwood, NJ, happily beginning their lives together while inspiring the generations of Wildwood lovers that would soon follow. They drove their 1948 Studebaker Commander from Maryland to Wildwood, where they spent their week at the Hotel Beach View on the boardwalk. They had a wonderful ocean view for a total of $55. From their second- floor room, they would watch the tide come up under the boardwalk. They spent their days on the beach and their nights at restaurants and nightclubs. Dick and Rose had 3 children, Peggy, Mary and Rick, and Wildwood became their summer vacation destination, with extended family including aunts, uncles and cousins contentedly coming along. They originally stayed at Mrs. Randall’s Apts. at 305 E. Magnolia Ave. until one summer when there was no vacancy. She sent them to Mrs. Kay McManus’ (Kitty Scully’s mother) at 304 E. Poplar Ave., Kay Apts., where the family stayed for years until it was sold. Although Dick and Rose have sadly passed on, their love for the Wildwoods happily lives on. Fast forward many memorable summers since their honeymoon days, and their children still feel lucky to spend their summers, along with their cousins, kids and grandkids, by the sea, adding a fourth generation to the many Wildwood memories their parents started so many years ago…

Wills Family Summer Vacation WILDWOOD BY-THE-SEA, N.J. 1960s

Mrs. Kay McManus rented apts. at 304 E. Poplar Ave. For years the entire Wills family would stay in the attic (without airconditioning!) until fire codes were enforced.

The Wills family hanging out at their favorite spot for generations... you can even see they brought their dog Huntley who’s chilling under Hunt’s Pier

by Peggy Wills Maybe I love summer so much because of all the great times we had in Wildwood when I was a kid. It was always hard to go to bed the night before vacation started. We were so excited! Only Christmas and Wildwood vacations could keep us up in anticipation. We always left early. I remember the sun would just be coming up over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Following many rounds of, “Are we there yet?” we eventually reached Rio Grande, knowing that Wildwood, the beach and boardwalk were just over the bridge! Our vacations always started on Sundays, so our first stop was mass at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Then it was unpacking at Miss Kays, who only had rooms to rent, before heading one block to the beach. We walked under the boardwalk and into the bright sun and hot sand, the waves breaking right in front of us. Mom and Dad would hold our hands as we jumped over the waves. If we wanted to go out farther, Dad would take us because Mom didn’t know how to swim! We would stay on the beach all day and play, stopping only for hot dogs on the Boardwalk at the Three Bears. Then we would trudge back to Miss Kay’s for a shower and a nap before dinner. Then it was up to the Boardwalk, where we were allowed to go on three rides. I remember the boats, the Merry go Round, the caterpillar and the cars. Next, it was ice cream before heading home to sleep on sandy sheets, lulled by the sounds of the Boardwalk coming through the open windows. Dad’s younger brother, my uncle John, and his three kids came to live and vacation with us. Uncle Frank, the oldest brother who was a priest, also vacationed with us. The more the merrier!

The grownups liked to sing “Wildwood Days” on our rides to the shore. We still stayed at Miss Kay’s, guys in one room, girls in another. Uncle John was like a big kid. I remember knocking on their door and asking, “Can Uncle John come out and play?” He would let us ride on his shoulders, “steering” with his head. Sometimes he would run us into trees or street signs! After the Boardwalk, we would go to Reddick’s, where the adults played shuffleboard. We would stop at the Anchor Inn on the way home for roast beef sandwiches (which we kids hated, but the adults loved). Since there were so many of us, Miss Kay decided to rent us the attic or “dormitory.” There was no air conditioning up there and it got very hot, but we had a lot of fun. As the years went by, we would often invite more family and friends along. We even brought our dog, Huntley. On one trip, Mom’s older sister, Aunt Marguerite, Uncle Mel and Cousins Tom and Maureen came along. On another trip, we took Aunt Theresa in the haunted house on Hunt’s Pier. A Frankenstein-type monster had us all screaming then falling like a stack of dominoes, with poor Aunt Theresa at the bottom of the heap (which turned out to be the last time Aunt Theresa had any “amusement” with us). We enjoyed daily Frisbee games on the beach, with Uncle Frank being the most competitive. We also enjoyed horseback riding on the beach, going fishing and going to the movies. We always packed a lot of activity into our one memorable week in Wildwood by the sea… ....and we still do!

“At the beach, life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun.”

BY-THE-SEA

Richie, Justin, Melissa, Brittany and Bryan. The kids always enjoy building sandcastles down by the sea. They dig a moat so that the waves will fill it. They like to add clamshells, seaweed and anything else they can find. Then, they have just as much fun destroying it before the waves do.
