from the Editor

See what’s inside {memories by-the-sea....}

The seashore is our chosen home, where we are one with the dunes and the blown beach grass. While the waves may wash all our footprints away, we still keep a few grains of sand tucked between our toes.

For many locals and vacationers alike, the moment we pass over the top of the bridge and see the sun shining over the sea, and breathe in Wildwood's sweet & salty air, we feel like we're home. It’s in this place, surrounded by water, where family and friends are offered a retreat from life's hustle and bustle. It is a place where we feel the embrace of nature's sea, sky & sandy earth - a beach filled with love and endless treasured days, where we rest and recharge from the daily grind of life. Here we glimpse heaven, and it beckons us home.

about the cover

If you are fortunate enough to call the Wildwoods home, even if it’s just for brief moments in time, then may the sea always call you back to those timeless moments, where above you, suspends the bluest skies and beneath you the sandiest, sweetest landscape this side of heaven… Have a glorious Indian Summer!

The SUN by-the–sea, Wildwood, NJ

Clearly in tune to the sounds of the sea, our adorable cover model Capt. Maggie Mae Mooers, Director of Human Relations at Grassy Sound Marina, is enjoying her photo-op courtesy of her parents Jim & Debbie and photographer Rob Kulisek. She sits at the helm of this Petty Skiff, belonging to Grassy Sound resident artist Haldy Gifford and custom Rob & Dorothy Kulisek at work built by a trio of brothers from Lancaster, PA. The base design is a Carolina Skiff that was used on the outer banks to net bait fish in the surf. Proof that every dog has its day, Capt. Maggie enjoys her moment in ‘the sun’ and feels right at home in the driver’s seat, excited to discover where her favorite form of transportation will take her next (hoping her destination includes sinking her paws into cool, soft sand). Driving through those waning Dog Days of Summer, this golden retriever keeps summer close at heart as she heads into another sensational season by the sea, fit for both man and his best Wildwood-loving friends.

“When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.”

Shine Eternally Bethie “Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know our loved ones are happy.” ~Eskimos proverb

Jersey Cape’s Character of the Week artist really captured Bethie’s bling Wildwood’s own shining star (above) as did our photographer in the Beth Sobel Chiarella photo of her taken passed away on 8/13/16 New Year’s Eve 2011 Beth Chiarella will always shine right alongside those heavenly stars, reminiscent of the beautiful Christmas ornament she always happily appeared to be. She had a smile that could light up any room! As the hostess for her family’s restaurant, GIA, she treated everyone like family, oftentimes sitting at your table to join in on the conversation or just to hear all about how you were doing. There will never be another “dressy Bethie.” She was truly one-of-a-kind and so very kind with a heart of gold. Since her daughter Gia’s death at Christmastime in 1998, Beth took her broken heart and used it to bless the children at Cooper Hospital during Christmas with “Gifts from Gia.” Her sadness at Christmastime was eased every year by an unspeakable joy that only comes from a giving heart. In that spirit, she beautifully kept her daughter’s memory alive. May knowing she has been reunited with Gia bring everyone who knew and loved Beth peace.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to her daughter Mia & husband Vince and all her family

Love those Wildwood Days!

One of the best parts of summer by the sea is the people it brings together from across the miles to fondly recall days gone by. A happy family reunion, Wildwood style, of course, was held at the George F. Boyer Historical Museum, where siblings G. Bruce Boyer, of Bethlehem, PA, and Kathy Boyer Maher of McLean, Virginia proudly visited the site aptly named in honor of their late father. Luckily, they were at the best place not just to honor the first president and founder of the The Wildwood Historical Society, but also to once again read all about his lasting legacy given to the town he clearly loved.

WILDWOOD PARKS

Fountain Park

This park is still well maintained today on New Jersey Ave. between Magnolia & Glenwood

Magnolia Park This park was actually not located on Magnolia Ave., but between Wildwood and Oak Ave. along New Jersey Ave. The lake was filled in and most of the land developed. A small park still exists here with a WW1 monument. Story to be featured in next issue.

by Cathy Tchorni Would you be surprised to know that Wildwood used to have a fresh water pond? It did! Read on... Originally Wildwood was a spit of densely covered oak, holly trees and thick vines. It was nearly untouched until about 1880. Developers Aaron Andrews, Joseph Taylor and John Burk recognized the appeal and the health benefits of the beautiful island, creating the Wildwood Beach Improvement Company. Later Latimer and Philip Baker joined the company. In 1883 the West Jersey Railroad was created to run trains from Cape May Court House to Anglesea on a precarious bridge over the marshlands. It often washed out and routinely stranded passengers at high tide. Nicknamed the “Mud Hen”, the train chugged to the Olde New Jersey Ave. train station at the top of North Wildwood, then down, what is now New Jersey Ave., with major stops at 17th Ave. in North Wildwood and Holly Beach Train Depot on New Jersey (then Holly Beach Ave.) and Andrews Ave. in Wildwood. Despite the primitive rail bed, tourists poured into Wildwood and the developers built houses and rooming houses to accommodate them. The developers enhanced the surrounding land of a natural, mostly fresh water pond in 1893. Named Magnolia Lake, it was located in Wildwood on the west side of Holly Beach Ave. in the vicinity of Wildwood and Oak Ave. Many postcards from the era show the beautiful pond with paddle boats, people picnicking on the grass nearby, and the thick trees providing shade. As the town’s homes sprang up on the newly created cross streets, the park became even more of an oasis. In 1903 the first bridge linking the mainland and Wildwood opened to automobile traffic. Additional rail lines were laid from the mainland through the marsh to West Wildwood. Beautiful Magnolia Lake only lasted about ten years. In 1904 the Baker brothers suggested that part of the lake was polluted, stating in an article of an unidentified newspaper in September that the “deep natural depressions...are filled with stagnant water, using them to become deleterious to the public health...” The brothers proposed that part of the lake be filled in, and the ground then seeded with grass. Since Latimer and Philip were to absorb the cost of the work, they believed they could recoup their cost by building on the resulting lots. All of Magnolia Lake and the surrounding park gradually succumbed to development. Another early plot of land, Fountain Park, was and still is located at Holly Beach Ave. (now New Jersey Ave.) between Glenwood and Magnolia Ave. Postcards show the heavily treed park that provided a cool respite from

the hot sun. James Ristine in a book from Arcadia Press (2002), commented “Set among the trees, Fountain Park provides a shady spot to sit and reflect. Small fountain and its statue add to the charm of the location. People standing in the park would hardly know that they are in the center of a bustling seaside resort.” In the early 1930s, Edward Zelig Fox partnered with Mayors William H. Bright and Doris Bradway to create beautiful parks, saying “God gave us a beautiful beach. What we ought to do is make the city in back of the beach just as beautiful.” E. Z. ensured that Fountain Park remained a glorious spot to sit in the shade and enjoy cool breezes. To create additional parks, E. Z. worked with the “Overseer of the Poor” in Wildwood to acquire repossessed land with its buildings, their owners’ victims of the Great Depression. The Overseer hired E. Z. impoverished residents of Wildwood to tear down buildings, clear underbrush, plant grass, lay sidewalk, build fountains, and plant beautiful shrubs and flowers that were raised in greenhouses on the northern side of the island, close to the bay. An example of his determination, E.Z Fox wanted to acquire the land beneath the closed, large Holly Beach School, located at Burk Ave., between New Jersey and Pacific Aves. The process took approximately five years, but in April 1939, the Holly Beach Park opened. It was dedicated to the last principal of the school, Henry Chalmers and displayed the bell from the school and an original maypole that remained in place from its days in the school yard. Another major, popular park was and is Columbus Park, located at Burk and Ocean Ave. It was dedicated in 1939 also, as a tribute to Christopher Columbus. The Vietnam Wall was completed in 2010 next to the park. It is a testament to men and women who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. It is also an example of a grass roots’ enthusiastic idea of Greg Mazzotta and Vince Prizzio, who pushed to raise monies to get the Wall built. Next to Columbus Park, Fox Park was constructed in 1936 between Burk and Montgomery Aves. on Atlantic Ave. Like construction projects everywhere, mistakes caused delays and embarrassment as inferior gravel refused to compact under the weight of rollers for tennis courts. Although the park opened with great ceremony on Flag Day in 1936, the tennis courts were still a mess. It took a private contractor to work with the Wildwood park crew to remove the old gravel and replace it with the proper

A postcard of the picturesque Magnolia Lake

grade – charging the City $950. – a small fortune during the Depression. Fox Park was reportedly used by Glenn Miller and his band to play softball when they weren’t making beautiful music. Fox Park expanded in 1947, when E.Z. Fox was Recreation and Parks Director, between the Boardwalk and Ocean Ave., and Taylor and Andrews. Shuffleboard had become popular and six courts were installed. More courts completed the total of courts to 24. The courts were beautiful with flowers planted between the courts. They became a major tourist attraction especially in the 1950s and 1960s, when shuffleboard popularity peaked. in addition to everything else Wildwood offered – they were free! To read more about shuffleboard google “nostalgia shuffleboard”, www.sunbythesea.com As E.Z. Fox mentioned, visitors and residents deserve beauty away from the ocean. The parks are dotted all over inland Wildwood. Why not try a walking tour on a warm, sunny day and discover the beauty of a cool ocean breeze under the shade of an old oak tree? Three examples of beautifully maintained parks are Memorial Park, honoring World War I veterans, next to the Lions Center at Oak and New Jersey Aves. Another is Fountain Park with its still-beautiful statue at Magnolia and New Jersey Aves. The third is Holly Beach Park, with its maypole still standing from the time the plot was a schoolyard, accessible from Burk and Andrews Aves. between Pacific and New Jersey Aves. For a map of Wildwood that shows park locations in green, see 24TimeZones.com, online map of Wildwood by Google Maps. The maps aren’t named except for Fox Park, but the map works for a walking tour.

You can still find respite in this quaint little park located at Glenwood & Pacific Aves. Look for the marker pictured below, that sits below the flag pole at Bright Park.

Below photos are the various parks that began as an idea for E.Z. Fox and became a vision. Most of them still remain to this day, continuing to grow and expand.

Holly Beach School, c. 1909 Accessible from Burk and Andrews Aves. between Pacific and New Jersey Aves., this park is very much unchanged since 1939 when it opened. A maypole still stands from the time the plot was a schoolyard. The school bell was recently placed into storage for preservation. We are researching the plans for its future. Tennis Courts

Photo below: Jim McMonigle, left, Abigail McIntyre-curator, and David Mann, the museum’s director, intrigued with their copies of The SUN by the Sea

Sun lover/Facebook friend Jim McMonigle, who proudly hails from Scotland, is a true history buff who has done extensive research on his family tree (happy to have made a connection with Sun editor and “the McMonagle’s of Port Richmond, Phila.” Jimmy volunteers at the Scottish Maritime Museum, which is home to Scotland’s maritime collection, and generously shares his knowledge on the life and times of a traditional Scottish pufferman. The museum, which was established in 1982, tells the stories of the inventors, craftsmen and explorers who played a part in shipbuilding. Jimmy has his own interesting collection of life stories that began in his hometown and found a place on a sailing vessel named the “Druid”. If you plan to visit Scotland in your travels, be sure to add Ayrshire to your list and while stopping by the Maritime Museum, please say hello to Jimmy, Abigail & David for us! “I stayed up all night to see where the Sun went. Then it dawned on me.” ~Farmers Almanac

“I love to walk the Seawall and watch the sunrise... and take lots of photos!”

Editor, Publisher of The Sun, Dorothy Kulisek has enjoyed her morning sunrise walks in North Wildwood for many years. Here she admires the beauty of the sunrise over the sea in its many moods in every season. These images are just a taste of her collection. Follow along on Facebook and Instagram to feel the beauty of the shore all year round. Dorothy’s book “HELLO SUN” features a collection of her favorite sunrise photos matched with the perfect quotes, which are all handwritten. (see adjacent page) It is also avaliable at Sunbythesea.com and exclusively in a few local shops, and makes a treasured all-occasion gift!

“No life can be barren which hears the whisper of the wind in the branches, or the voice of the sea as it breaks upon the shore; and no soul can lack happiness looking out at the morning sun.” ~William Winter

“There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you... only in the winter, in the country, or by the sea, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself.” - R. Stout, The Winter Season

CORNER OF ANDREW & PACIFIC AVES. WILDWOOD 522-5006 The McMonagle family with their favorite rock star, Michael LeCompt, at Keenan’s. Wildwood’s beloved Dave Snyder with Charlie Gracie, the famous singer who recorded his top hit “Poor Butterfly”, and also admired by the Beatles for his unique guitar work. This picture was taken in the 1960’s when Dave worked at the Hurricane Club on Pacific Ave as the doorman. Here he is wearing a bow tie and a special officers badge. Sometimes he would wear a tuxedo and was a handsome man who knew all the great entertainers who appeared at the club. Charlie Gracie was the headliner when this picture was taken. Many will remember Dave was also a bouncer at Moore’s inlet Club, and that he wore his “OP” shorts all year long. ~Sent in by Al Love via Rich Snyder

which happily has ushered in the coolest characters while putting out the Inferno inspired by summer’s high temperatures (and stories). Our cast learns The Light Between Oceans brightly connects both seasons, as the sunlight only enhances their star status. Following that bright light, the Storks promise to deliver abundant beach days reminiscent of their lively childhood. Already needing a break from her emotional mother, Bridget Jones’s Baby has arrived just in time for all that family fun as the Masterminds, caught up in all the familial entertainment; put their money-making plan aside to savor priceless coastal days. Before savoring those seaside movie days, please check your local listings for release date changes…

Despite daily seawall strolls, a lighthouse keeper and his wife (Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander) feel their lives are lacking purpose until they discover The Light Between Oceans (opens September 2nd) after rescuing a baby from a drifting rowboat and claiming her as their own. Disaster strikes when her birth mother (Rachel Weisz) appears. Bridget Jones’s Baby (opens September 16th) can expect a quirky upbringing courtesy of the offbeat British executive (Renee Zellweger) and the men in her life (Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey), who discover a day at the Roar to the Shore Motorcycle Rally is calm and quiet in comparison. Hanging out in the old west, The Magnificent Seven (including Chris Pratt and Matt Bomer, opens September 23rd) miss out on the magnificent ‘Boots at the Beach’ Country Music Festival when they load up their guns to save a impoverished village. In the business of delivering packages, the Storks (including the voices of Andy Samberg and Ty Burrell, opens September 23rd), strangely drawn to Morey’s Piers ‘Gone to the Dogs,’ must switch gears and deliver an actual (animated) baby. The Masterminds (including Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig and Owen Wilson, opens September 30th) plan the ultimate bank heist, which ultimately provides a different kind of excitement than found at

the action-packed Wildwood Block Party & Music Festival. The Girl on the Train (Emily Blunt, opens October 7th) confuses fantasy with reality during her daily work commute to London, where she witnesses the qualified contestants at the Halloween House Decorating Contest and a disturbing, possible abduction. The Accountant (Ben Affleck, opens October 14th) has strange skills that enable him to fix the numbers in his criminal clients’ favor while finding the best treasures at Ed’s Funcade Boardwalk Treasure Hunt. After being accused of a 16-year old murder, Jack Reacher: (shouts) Never Go Back (Tom Cruise, opens October 21st) a little too late, wishing he’d gone even farther back in time to commemorate the 50s and Beyond Celebration. During the North Wildwood Trunk-or-Treat festivities, ghosts and goblins are keeping a watchful eye on its participants, shouting, Boo! (completing Tyler Perry’s) A Madea Halloween (opens October 21st) Wildwood style. The Olde Time Italian Festival provides a brief but memorable diversion for an amnesiac (Tom Hanks) who joins forces with a doctor (Felicity Jones) to put out the devastating Inferno (opens October 28th) spreading across Europe. The Magnificent Seven are ready for a magnificent fall seaside, where Jack Reacher: (declares, I’ll) Never Go Back to his Hollywood friends as he reaches toward a different kind of escapade courtesy of Adventure Pier. The Girl on the Train, clearly in need of more serenity and less excitement, finds the tram car provides a scenic, and certainly safer, way to travel as she learns the best way to cope with reality is along the coast. The Accountant is counting all of the autumn days ahead of him, content to be a law-abiding Wildwood lover, safe from those creepy-but-creative poltergeists shouting, Boo! (making) A Madea Halloween funny and frightening. All of our post-summer characters are counting their blessings beneath that ethereal Harvest Moon, where multi-colored stories are rivaled only by our colorful coastal setting and shining brightly among the stars right here by the beautiful sea…

Greg Yacabell, who also appeared in the Holiday 2015 edition of The SUN as “Mr. Christmas”, has an uncanny memory of his childhood summer days spent in North Wildwood. His parents, Mary & Luigi Yacabell, were hardworking “go-getters” who owned and operated a grocery store in Wilmington, DE. They found Wildwood to be the perfect summer vacation town. After renting a summer place on Youngs Avenue for several years in the 1940s, they decided they wanted to be closer to the sea in a quieter part of the island. In 1952, their entrepreneurial spirit led them to purchase their first summer home located at 304 Surf Avenue. One day, during a walk after shopping at the American Store on 1st & Central Ave., they happened upon a property being auctioned. The house, located at 2nd & Central Ave., became their second Wildwood home. The industrious family rented the house while they stayed in the fixed-up garage. Greg’s Wildwood recollections reach far and wide. He recalled a long-gone driving range at 1st & Surf Ave. situated next to the swimming hole where he once swam, complete with lifeguard and a party boat docked nearby. He reminisced about the Windsor House on the corner and another place owned by the Evans family, and how local radio station WCMC would recite the rosary every night during the summer, with his mother faithfully praying along. His father loved their crabbing trips in the back

bays. He believed nothing went better with crabbing than Peel’s beer, which he always took along. They would stop by Bishop’s High Steps (now Anglesea Pub), where Greg can still picture his dad setting his crabbing baskets on the bar while they enjoyed their after-crabbing hour. When not at play, Greg was hard at work. As anyone who has ever lived on the island can attest, there have always been many ways to make money in the summertime. For two summers, he worked collecting golf balls for 5¢ apiece at the aforementioned driving range on the beach. To this day, he can picture nothing but sand dunes everywhere. He also walked the beach collecting soda bottles redeemable for 2¢ each. For a couple of summers, he even worked as a “soda jerk” at Monty’s Ice Cream Parlor & Gift Shop at 2nd & Central Aves.. Hardworking Greg saved his money for dances at the Starlight Ballroom, where he, along with every other local teen, considered it the place to be. As an adult, he bought his own piece of the island located at 3rd & Atlantic Avenues, where he, like his parents, rented rooms and apartments. Greg, who carries with him a lifetime of treasured memories, attributes his happiness to the wonderful childhood his parents gave him in having summer homes in Wildwood; and also his dear friend Dagmar, with whom he now shares his blissful days by the sea. The History of Sportland & Other Things Sportland circa 1929 Sportland circa 1929 & 1970

Greenspan’s Tailor Shop at 120 E. Wildwood Ave.

T

he summer season officially ends on Thursday, September 22, this year. Years ago, it ended officially on Labor Day, as the long line of cars, bumper to bumper, made their exodus west over the George Redding Bridge. As a youngster, the day after Labor Day Monday, I would awake to quiet and the emptiness of the street. It seemed the gods of summer cast a kind of pall over our island. Today I look forward to “Indian Summer” and what some people refer to as “the shoulder season” even up to the middle of October. The annual Baby Parade was held in August, and graduates of Wildwood High School were asked to participate by riding the Tram as a group to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our local high school. I took advantage of the ride on the Sightseer and saw the entire Boardwalk. Some stores were familiar and then there were the very new. As we approached the area between 23rd and 24th Streets in North Wildwood called Sportland, I went back in thought to the days of “Aqua Circus” and the “Aqua Maids” and the “Aqua Maniacs” who wowed us with a series of rapid-fire comedy dives. There was also a highdiver who set himself on fire before diving into the pool. Having spent many years volunteering at the Wildwood Historical Society, I came across the very early history of Sportland. According to Wildwood-by-the-Sea authors, David W. Francis, Diane DeMaili Francis and Robert J. Scully, Sr., one of the major developers in the 1920s was William Lipkin. It was at this location that Lipkin launched his most ambitious project. Sportland was conceived as a complete sports facility for the entire family. With construction costs variously estimated between $300,000 and $750,000, Sportland featured a solid brick front, housing eight Boardwalk stores. Behind this brick facade was a massive swimming pool with a depth of almost 10 feet and a 2,500,000 gallon water system that pumped, filtered and when needed, heated sea water for the pool. Sixteen hundred pagoda-style bathhouses

surrounded the pool which was equipped with a music platform where orchestras provided “music to swim by”. Lipkin’s ultimate sports facility also incorporated hand ball courts, a boxing ring, running tracks, golf practice nets, quoits, broad jump pits, basketball courts, volley ball and tennis courts, a children’s play area and wading pool, and even a physician to advise customers regarding exercise and health. For those who motored to Wildwood, Lipkin provided a parking lot that could accommodate 1,000 cars. Lipkin, who apparently preferred to be a developer rather than an operator, enjoyed a successful first season and then promptly sold Sportland to the First National Mortgage Corporation of New York City for $1,500,000. Considering that the local economy was already faltering early in 1929 and the national economy was soon to collapse, Lipkin’s uncanny timing allowed him to walk away with more than $1,000,000 in profits and distanced him from the terrible financial crisis that Sportland faced during the 1930s. During the 30s, Sportland offered the “Sportland Hof brau” where you could buy a lobster dinner for $1.00 and a steak dinner for $.75. They also offered an outdoor “dance garden” and Sportland’s Wonder Bar. S B. Ramagosa acquired Sportland in 1942, and began making whatever improvements he could without the usual supplies of lumber and paint that were in short supply due to war shortages. In 1945, Ramagosa debuted the first Watercade which was a major success and expanded on the show after the war years. He would develop and open Sportland Pier (beach side) in 1957 (the same year that Hunt’s Pier debuted). Think about stopping in to the museum and review the various clippings, photos and history about Sportland . They can be located in Book 25, “Boardwalk North End”. Enjoy! One day in August I stopped in the museum and had the pleasure of running into former residents of North Wildwood, the Greenspan Family. Their father, Meyer

Greenspan, owned and operated a business at 3309 Pacific Avenue called “Meyer’s Shoes.” We talked about their family, our alma mater, WHS, and other Wildwood family names. Before they left, they were kind enough to donate a sign from their grandfather, William Greenspon, from his tailor shop located at 120 East Wildwood Avenue. In addition, Ian K. Watt dropped off a photo of the Leaming house that once stood at 144 East Leaming Avenue. James Flynn of Flynn Real Estate gave us six Cape May County Realtor Books from 1992, and George Carlson Jr. gave us a Union Bank money bag. The Union Bank merged with the Wildwood Trust Company in the late 1950s, and became the Union Trust Company. Stephen Bobbs, dropped off a vintage Wildwood sweatshirt from the late 40s or early 50s. He told us he picked it up at a place called “Cheap Charlie’s” expressly for the museum. Thank you, Stephen! I recently rediscovered a little book I purchased while visiting in Fredericksburg, VA. It’s entitled George Washington’s Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation. President Washington, at the age of 14, wrote down 110 rules under this title. He listed his first rule as “Every action done in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those that are present.” I think that’s a good place to start! Our VP, Al Brannen has announced that all bricks have been placed. Come take a look! In closing, please remember our new Fall hours of operation will begin October 6th. We will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturdays until October 29th, which will be our last day. After that, if you are in need of our services, please call 609-523-0277, leave a message and someone will get back to you. Please stop in for a visit, even if it is a brief one. You won’t be sorry. Until next time . . . . be happy and be well!

A Brief History of Dr. Margaret Mace

Margaret Mace was born in Leicester, England and came to America in 1874. Around 1880 her family settled in Anglesea at a home on Spruce & New Jersey Aves. She attended grammar school and upon graduation, went to Bridgeton Institute to become a teacher. She wanted to become a nurse and began to pursue her passion for helping people. Dr. Mace graduated with her degree in medicine in 1905 from the Women’s College of Medicine in Philadelphia. She began her practice

in North Wildwood at 17th & Atlantic Aves., later moving her expanding practice to an office at Chestnut & New Jersey Aves. She then opened her hospital at 25th & Atlantic in 1915. It remained in operation for 35 years until 1950. Dr. Margaret Mace passed away at 81 years of age on December 16, 1951. For the past 12 years, we have honored her with this eventful photo shoot, where a handful of her 6,000 babies that she delivered gather together for a reunion. Perhaps the best tribute to this great woman are her own words which she spoke at the time of her first testimonial in 1929. She said, “There is no place on earth like my home town; no people like my home people; I came here when it was a wilderness; it is one of the finest places in the world, in my work I have tried to do my best, but I had help, helped by the hand of God.” Note from the Editor: I am honored to be a part of Dr. Mace’s story and to work together with Steve & Betty at the Lighthouse, who happily serve up refreshments for all of our babies who attend.

“WE WERE BORN AT HOME!”

A Brief History of Long’s Maternity House In the early 1900’s, maternity homes were an easier, more comfortable, convenient way to deliver your baby and in Wildwood, there were two popular places for this! The first home, in which around 6,000 babies were delivered, was Dr. Margaret Mace’s hospital in North Wildwood. The second home, located on Montgomery Avenue in Wildwood was also a very special maternity home that was run by mid-wife, Mrs. Hattie Long.

Dr. Margaret Mace Baby Hattie Long’s Maternity & Babies Born at Home in Wildwood

Call (609) 522-2721

After Mr. Long passed away in 1923, Mrs. Long started the maternity home in 1926 in order to make a living for herself. The maternity home was successful for 20 years as 4 or more doctors worked along side of Mrs. Long to keep the business going. Mrs. Long and her team of doctors delivered around 515 babies during that time, 9 of which were her own. Unfortunately, only 7 of the 9 Long babies survived; however, the oldest daughter of Mrs. Long grew up helping with the home and soon became a very helpful aid for Hattie during the birth processes. John Long, grandson to Mrs. Long, was born on August 5, 1929. He was the only guy born into the Long family during that time. Although it has since been sold many times, the maternity home still stands today, filled with many memories. It still has the long, enclosed porch in which the babies were held after they were born. This was a 3 bedroom house, and through the duration that the house was a maternity home, the bedrooms’ upstairs were the sites of where the mothers stayed during the procedures. Mrs. Long made the living room into a bedroom for herself to make all of her guests comfortable. At a photo gathering for this maternity home in July, 2015, 12 people that were born in the home showed up to capture the memory for a lifetime. Save the date, July 10, 2016 for next year’s photo reunion.

Stories! Stories can sometimes teach us more than dry facts and figures, because they are personal, and passed down from person to person. Jim Neill is one man with quite a story to pass down. He is a true local; he grew up here, made his living here. Jim is the oldest of 11 siblings, and is 97 years old. He is still mowing and raking his lawn as well as his neighbor’s lawns. He has more energy than many people decades younger. Jim has always made his livelihood from the sea. He was a commercial fisherman from age 16 to 30. He used to be the captain of the Nelly Bly, a ferry boat that would carry passengers from Anglesea to Stone Harbor before the Ocean Drive bridge was built. He spent several years in the army. He also worked at Snows factory for 12 years, working hard shucking oysters.

The best day he ever had was one Memorial Day, when a nor’easter was blowing through. All of the people were forced indoor, and Jim sold 28 gallons of chowder, as well as other stews and 10,000 clams. Jim usually woke up at 4 a.m. to prepare the store, and was open from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. He was sold out by 3 in the afternoon. “I could have sold more, but I just didn’t have it,” Jim laughed. “I had to close the next day as well, because there was nothing left to sell, I was cleaned out!”

Jim Neill built both his home & the Clam Bar both of which have been replaced by condos

He closed a little after his wife’s stroke, and sold the house as well as Jim’s Clam Bar around 1985. Jim’s Clam Bar still stood there until a few years ago around 2006, when it was torn down to put up sets of new condominiums. You can read about the history of Wildwood; how it looked, what was happening, and what businesses thrived in books, magazines, or on T.V. We learn this way all of the time, even on a daily basis. However, there is something more personal about learning the past from someone that lived through it, by their stories. It captures the imagination and lingers longer, like stories we were told as children. This story from a Wildwood SUN locale, is no exception. local, about our Wildwood

Clams on the half-shell! Steamers! Stews! Chowder that sticks to the soul! And clams to go! By the bushel! . . . the dozen! Little Neck! Cherrystone! Clams! Clams! And nothing BUT clams! Hewn from the sweat and sinew of one man’s simple vision, clams raked from the waters of a clean bay, the frame of home and shop, both structure and demeanor, constructed with one, bare set of hands. . . All the character and spirit of an older, more rugged America, of a place where the pride of self-sufficiency was once enough to sustain a dream, built into the practical ambiance, the raw wooden counter and stools, the sacred chowder and stew recipes, the mollusk bins and congenial, self-taught service. . . A rare marker of a man who took the lessons of the land to heart, and survived in an era that valued quiet achievement, cool perseverence, plain self-satisfaction, and even courage.

And The Flag Was Not There by Marilyn Guidetti

Young Robert Guidetti saluting the flag at a hometown parade in the early 1940’s

My

family flies the American flag every day, even if it’s not a flag holiday. The flag is a part of our house and we maintain it as a sign of respect. Last summer, someone stole the flag (pole and all) that was flying from our front porch. To add insult to injury, it happened just before Independence Day. First I thought it was a prankster who would return it, then I thought it was someone in the area that was renting and wanted a flag for the weekend. We looked at every flag in the general area ( there were some characteristics on our flag pole to recognize) but to no avail. To me, the American flag is equivalent to a religious item. Many brave men and women lost their lives defending our flag and all it stands for. I have family members and close friends who were in the service during different wars and conflicts. We worried and prayed for their safety, remembering they all contributed to the freedoms we enjoy today. I think about my grandniece Samantha and grandnephew Stephen, who are now in the Marines. Our flag was special because we received it by donating to a special disabled veteran’s project. I hope wherever it is, it is respected and intact. Many years ago I came upon this story, which I copied and framed. I would like to share it with you and your readers. The author is not known. Hello, Remember Me? Some people call me Old Glory, others call me the Star Spangled Banner, but whatever they call me, I am your Flag, the Flag of the United States of America....something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you...because it is about you and me.

“It’s not how big the house is, it’s how happy the home is.” ~Simple Reminders

The Enduring Seaside Cottage “Out with the old and in with the new” seems to be a popular catchphrase in these contemporary times. We here at The SUN, however, being the oldfashioned bunch we are, treasure history the way one cherishes a childhood friend, appreciating its value even more with the passage of time. In that “historical” tradition, we happily salute the seaside cottages still standing, those that have defied the bulldozers while establishing their subtle yet significant place in Wildwood history. These beachside bungalows proudly displayed are forever etched within our seaside scrapbooks. Jam-packed within these often filled-to-capacity dwellings reside happy memories far superior than the limited space they occupy. The families inside were just content to be together in a place by the sea. Cottages like these shown carry the remembrance of days-gone-by, linking a never-forgotten past to an ever-changing present.

Returning from the Annual Fishing Rodeo are Natalie & Joey McMonagle at their summer cottage in 1972.This home still remains with the family, continuing to make summer memories...“it’s truly a place where summer stays all year long.”

My grandparents “Seaside Cottage” still exists at 214 E. Miami Ave. in Wildwood Crest, which is fortunate for me. I have many great memories of this place. My grandparents were Harry B. & Estelle Hunt. Harry was the brother of WC Hunt of Hunt’s Pier fame. My mother was Dorothy Hunt and she married John McNutt of Wildwood. Ironically, my father’s father had an electrical store, John J. McNutt and Son on Oak Avenue and they wired many of the rides on the boardwalk. So, there were sparks flying way before Mom and Dad were married. When I was a child, my whole world was between Miami Ave. and Hunt’s Pier. I would hop the bus to go to my Great Uncle Will’s office attached to the Shore Theatre, pick up my free tickets for all the rides on Hunt’s Pier and all the movies...and, yes, I had it made! Of course, I ate Mack’s Pizza between rides and movies too. My childhood was so much fun and I will never forget it. In the summer, I still swim at the end of Miami Avenue beach. And I still enjoy the boards and Mack’s just as the same. Thanks Uncle Will, Pop Pop Harry and Mom and Dad, for those free tickets to paradise and memories that will last a lifetime. ~Janie McNutt

Serendipity Actor Ken Stott once said, “I always leave room for serendipity and chance.” One of our favorite things about The Sun (we say humbly) is the serendipitous moments that our seaside newspaper inspires. One such pleasant surprise came courtesy of Debbie Mooers, who rents an Air BnB at her Grassy Sound Marina, where she always has a copy of The Sun nearby. During the week of this year’s Marbles Tournament, her friend’s 87-year-old father, Herman was visiting and happened by chance upon the story of the Marbles Tournament that appeared in the Memorial Day edition. A then-12-year-old Herman proudly played a part in that story, having been beaten by Gerald Robinson, the 1941 champion who was pictured in the story. He was thrilled to recall his Wildwood childhood days (despite losing the title of Marble King) and is further proof that our rich and colorful past fortuitously connects our present days by the sea…

“The perfect weather of Indian Summer lengthened and lingered. . .

Huckleberry Summers by Steve Murray

Nine year old Steve Murray in 1963.

I

do love the Fall, my favorite season, but it’s still very sad to see another summer at the seashore end. I’ve spent every summer of my life down here, the last 40 as a permanent resident. Lots and lots of great memories. Maybe the best of these were the ones I spent at my grandmothers rental properties, in particular, those before I reached the age of 15. Those were magical, memorable, amazing days for me. Things were so very different back then - a wonderful time to be a kid anywhere but especially if you were lucky enough to have grandparents that lived in North Wildwood. The early 1960’s were still mostly innocent, safer, less paranoid times and kids were still allowed to be kids. Adults had minimal involvement in children’s free time and activities. It would be years before a harsher world and the resulting over- structuring, over supervising and over- protecting of young people would change childhood forever. It was also decades before the development, overuse and misuse of a wonderful new miracle tool- the personal computer. Thinking back now, I see myself as a kind of Huckleberry Finn, tow headed, freckled, and shoeless, waking up each morning to endless hours of unplanned fun and adventure. I was about as “free range” as a kid could get- even for those times. Every day I was out the door like a shot right after breakfast, without a word to anyone about where or with whom. I didn’t even know myself. Usually my face wouldn’t be seen again until dinner time. A typical day would see me all over the place - anywhere and everywhere. Down to the beach first, maybe- usually without even a towel. To ride waves, play running bases or clam shell pitch. To search under the boardwalk for lost coins and refundable soda bottles. To grab a 35 cent hamburger at the sandy floored but mouth wateringly aromatic beach grill. To climb over the wide expanse of the bayberry

18th Ave. beach, Steve Murray (center) in 1960

covered sand dunes (long gone). To play Robinson Crusoe or look for pirates treasure. To get chased by irate red wing black bird moms protecting their nests while we chased rabbits. Maybe to the back bay area on the west side, to fish, crab or swim off a street end pier. To “borrow” a friends dads boat over to the meadows and walk through that deep, wet, stinky muck and look for old floats, lost oars or life vests. To maybe find the prize of all prizes - the perfect little boat - lost, still sea worthy and up for grabs. The only ones found though were battered old tubs that always sank quickly. I’m surprised I’m still here to recall it. Maybe to the Inlet seawall at low tide to look for snagged fishing lures and sinkers or play in the “caves” created by those giant blocks of Pennsylvania granite. The occasional appearance of one of those big, sneaky wharf rats would send us running away quickly. Maybe to one of the many empty lots (all gone now) to play wiffle or soft ball with an odd assortmant of any kids we could pick up along the way. Sliding into home could be hazardous, with broken glass, prickly pear cactus, sandburs and old rusty nails

hidden in the weeds. Maybe to some big old tree (rare even in those days on the Island) to play Tarzan. With our vivid imaginations you only needed one tree to have a jungle. Maybe to the old playground, where before “OSHA”, the deadly swinging gate, dangerous foot powered merry- go- round, skin blistering, sun heated sliding boards and old rusty monkey bars would provide loads of fun and exercise but might likely acquaint you with the nearest first aid station. Maybe to the docks where the party boats came in to see what was caught or to clean fish for a small fee. Maybe just a spur of the moment discovery of a couple of good sturdy sticks (multi use toys). A straight tree branch or an old broom handle could be a rifle, a Roman Warriors spear, a baseball bat, Zorros sword- anything we could conjure up at the moment. Maybe to go horseback riding at the far end of Wildwood Crest. This area was mostly wilderness in the years before the luxery motels and condos came along. I would take the bus from 18th Ave (25 ¢) down to the stables at Diamond Beach. A

horse, just the right size, was picked out for me and I could be a cowboy on a group beach ride for about 45 minutes. There was a driving range on Pacific Ave. across from the stables and I would go hit a basket of balls while I waited for the north bound bus to come take me home. Late in the afternoon after a long day and a growling stomach, I would wander back home. Many times I would be sunburned, scratched, covered with poison ivy rashes, maybe have a black eye, buried tick, splinters, thorns, bee or jelly fish stings, dirty knees, feet encrusted in beach tar, or maybe a chipped tooth. Heck, I don’t recommend it but my nose was broken twice before I was twelve. I always got home before dinner. I swear I could smell my grandmothers pot roast two blocks away. The day didn’t end with dinner though. There was still plenty of daylight (and energy) for more fun. Depending on how much pocket change was left from my allowance, soda bottle refunds and odd chores - a trip to the boardwalk might be on the agenda. It was not unusual to see a couple of 9 year olds going to the “boards” at night without adults in those days. Finally, after a couple of hours, broke and much more exhausted, we arrived back home. I would still play games with my friends (quietly) like hide and seek, in the dark yard, until I was finally told to come in for the night. What wonderful days those were. There were risks and injuries but out weighing them one hundred fold, was the freedom to experience childhood more fully than, unfortunately, children are able to do today. The health benefits alone of spending so much of the day outdoors - being so close to nature, getting huge doses of fresh seashore air and loads of exercise was priceless. So was learning so many lessons of life you could never learn in a classroom, in front of a computer screen or at some youth “camp”. Another valuable gift we got out of all this was a highly cultivated imagination. Not having any sophisticated or electronic toys, we had no choice. Even Einstein himself said “ Imagination is more important than intelligence”. So at the end of any one of these typical summer days, when, finally exhausted, I resigned myself to go to bed. As soon as my head hit that old feather pillow, deliciously cooled and scented by the ocean breeze drifting through open windows, I nodded off, dreaming of the next days adventures. A mAgical Evening at Hooked On BookS by NOLA KANE On the 21st of July 2007 at 12:01am

the last of the seven books in the Harry Potter series was released. At the time it seemed the whole world was hanging on the edge of their broomsticks to find out what was going to happen in the final showdown between Harry & Voldemort. The debate, speculation and hoopla surrounding it was immense and my favorite bookstore Hooked On Books in Wildwood was throwing a midnight release party. But I wasn’t there. Because I was not yet old enough to go out at midnight. Oh I got my book the next morning, and I loved it, but as I grew older I regretted missing the experience of getting dressed up and lining up with other fans at midnight, for a book. Other book crazes have come and gone, Twilight, The Hunger Games, Fifty Shades of Grey (no comment) but none quite caught the worlds imagination the way Harry Potter did, and it seemed that midnight book parties had become a thing of the past. The story was over. Done. Finito! Then early this year the rumors started that J. K Rowling had written another Harry Potter book. In fact it was a play, that was going to open in London’s West End on Saturday July 30th, and the book was going to go on sale worldwide that night at midnight. Now working at Hooked On Books I asked my boss if we were going to do a midnight party. He said “Absolutely for old times sake- even if only me and you are there”. You see, with the passage of nine years we weren’t sure if that same excitement would still be there. But as we threw open our doors at 11:30pm

that Saturday night, enough people had shown up to form a line all the way down the block, some dressed in their favorite Hogwarts ensemble. The walls of the store were postered with various familiar faces of Harry’s world and tacked with balloons with various spells scrawled across them. We hosts dressed in the best wizardly garb we could snag from our Room of Requirement. Butterbeer was served from the Three Broomsticks pub, as well as Polyjuice Potion (no changes in appearance were reported, although I could’ve sworn I saw a few people leave who had not entered in that form). From the Honeydukes Sweetshop people could pick up various wizard candies including Bertie Botts Every-Flavor-Beans, Licorice Wands, and Fizzing Wizzbees. Our lovely witches Patti and Elise returned after a long retirement from midnight openings to hand these out, and fellow newcomer witch Maddy dished out our chocolate pumpkin Harry Potter cake. People were encouraged to pick up Harry Potter-themed crosswords and word search puzzles and give them a try. But the real treat of the night was the book. When midnight rang we cut open the box seals and everyone got their chance to fly into the further tale in the ongoing saga of Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco … and their kids now at Hogwarts age. For one night, all we Muggles wishing we were Wizards came together to experience a great magic that only comes once in a blue moon. And while I’m still patiently waiting for my Hogwarts acceptance letter, this night for me was a truly magical experience.

Like so many generations of Wildwood lovers, Judy Longo has fond memories of her summer days spent seaside with her family, timelessly captured by countless tattered-but-irreplaceable photographs tucked away in boxes but still kept close at heart. Her extended family, initially led by her grandmother, spent every summer in Wildwood. For a few years, the family stayed on Glenwood Avenue in a garage apartment, too busy having fun to care about the small quarters they shared. There were blissful summers at The Sherwood on 26th Street as well as the Montgomery Hotel and the Eden Roc Motel, followed by the Port Royal when Judy’s two daughters were young. Now, Judy and her daughters are proud, year-round Wildwood residents, warmed by a lifetime of sunny memories of their days spent by the sea…

GARY SLOAN

Dear Fellow Angler’s Welcome to the column and hope you have had a good summer of fishing and enjoying the outdoors. I think the long stretch of extreme heat really stressed the fishermen more than the fish. The ocean really settled into a very large mass of Gulf Stream like water. This increase of warmer water drew more tropical fish like triggers, sheepsheads, and cobia. It might be a glance into the future. The Back Bay waters have had a real nice mix of fluke, small weakfish, and a tropical flair of sheepshead. The Delaware Bay has had a poor season on keeper fluke from many reports, but lots of small weakfish, blues, and croakers. Weakfish still remain at 1 fish of 13 inches. Fluke fishing has turned on to an offshore sport since most successful trips are from the artificial reefs to 25 miles out. Seabass have been consistent on wrecks with your limit of two fish it is hardly a worthy invest in effort solely for bass. The one shining light has been the offshore fishing. The Tuna bite at Masseys in early summer was epic according to some Captains. The inshore has also had a really good Mahi bite. The canyons offshore had a white Marlin bite that was declared incredible most of the summer. The Mahi in late August and early September come close to the beach so if you want to have a great experience give it a try. They are a blast to catch on light tackle. Hold on to Summer! Remember the good ol’ dog days . . .

Love,

adjacent pictures of some Mahi caught on two trips I enjoyed this summer.) As we slide into the fall, the variety of migrating schools of blues, stripers, and seatrout should give us some excitement for the season. We should continue to catch some fluke, seabass, and tautaug thru the fall if the weather gods give us a chance. Plenty of fish are available in the fall, unfortunately the size limitations hasn’t allowed for keeping many of the fish. We continue to receive more bleak news that Marine Fisheries are going to reduce fluke tonnage in 2017. The logic just doesn’t add up with regards to the application of regulations versus the improvement in our popular types of fish. The constant increase of regulation have not improved fishing for anglers. Why do we have to return fluke under 18inches and commercial draggers can keep anything between 15-18 inches. We are required to return any seabass under 12.5 inches yet commercial draggers can keep anything over 9 inches. The disparity is unfair to anglers. Hardly anyone fish and keep Bluefish and yet their numbers seem to be decreasing. This could hardly be blamed on anglers since few even fish for them. All the while, we allow commercial draggers to haul up juvenile fish of all species, which are dead from being crushed in the net or drown. They are shoveled overboard and totally wasted. Sounds like poor use of any resource. It’s time to start making Marine Fisheries be accountable for these inequities and failures in management. I still feel blessed to venture into one of God’s most amazing gifts given to us to enjoy. The oceans are still full of mystery and beauty. Fishing is like Christmas. The anticipation and thrill of pulling up an unknown fish from the deep is similar to the excitementof opening a Christmas gift. Please take the time and share that excitement with a friend or a loved one. When it comes time to meet your maker, I know the answer to this question. Would you ask for one more day of fishing with a loved one or one more day of work? God Bless,

Capt. Gary
