“Dear Ocean, thank you for making us feel tiny, humble, inspired, and salty... all at once.”
from the Editor
See what’s on this side! {There’s a memory on every page}
F li p o ve r to e n j oy t he “e n d l e ss S u N ” ! Inspired by a quest for never-ending days by the sea, here at The SUN I proudly introduce the “Endless Summer Sun,” which offers a fresh, creative format for your viewing pleasure. Thanks to two unique, seaside-inspired covers, The SUN promises to never end! On your search for endless summer days, we hope you’ll enjoy this latest endeavor to keep the good times rolling. Be sure to read The SUN from cover to cover and back again to fully experience this version of an “Endless Summer.” With another season of The Sun officially upon us, my heart overflows with thanks to our readers, our friends, and especially our advertisers for their part in the creation of what some Sun supporters call ‘a little piece of heaven’. Because sharing each heavenly, Wildwood moment is what we here at The Sun naturally do, I invite you to reminisce as you flip through pages of homemade happiness in the stories and photos compiled for your reading pleasure. May The Sun briefly cause time to stand still. Thanks in part to the magic of photography, we, too, can stand still, pause for an instant and capture each memory-in-the-making. For years to come, we can remember the fun we had when the flash went off. Our photographs taken by the sea make for the best memory keepers; happy reminders of bygone days that offer us an enduring, wistful glimpse back in time to unhurried moments spent with family and friends. There’s something very special about summertime at the beach; particularly here in Wildwood by-the-Sea. Whether we are locals or summer folk, as our treasured featured photographs convey, we are all drawn here. Something holds us here, to enjoy our own personalized rituals and shore customs year after year! Just as the sky is so much bluer at the beach, likewise people tend to be so much happier and life is more wonderful. Because the most introspective observations in life bear repeating, I’m reminded of thoughts summarized in a former issue of The Sun . . . Being at the beach allows us to congregate around one of the most profound of all natural phenomena: a line where the continent ends and a giant stretch of water begins. The beach is basically the end of the world; when we are standing on it, it’s hard not to feel a primitive connection to all the generations of seashore lovers who have been drawn to the same edge. When we swim in the ocean, we do it, not just to cool off, but to commune for a while with its wild, eternal, mysterious vastness. The salt water and sunshine have a mood altering, mermaid-like effect on me, personally. It’s like an altar (baptism) at which being immersed is the most natural feeling of closeness to God’s creation there is. This summer, as you sit happily facing out to sea, each in your own blissful beach chair, digging little holes with your feet, remember the gifts that come from the sea and the gratitude that bestows a reverence in us that forever changes our perspective on the world. As we welcome Summer, may you be forever changed as you stand beside the ocean, may your hearts overflow with endless summer days and may this copy of The Sun by-the-Sea knock your flip flops off! Whatever that mystical quality is deep within our soul that draws us to the Wildwoods, may it hold us here forever and may it inspire us to grab hold of each picture-postcard moment spent by the sea. He who seeks beauty shall find it by the sea.
Welcome Back SUMMER!

dear I’m hoping you continue with the double issues of The Sun that includes Ocean City. I have special memories of all the years my wife and I spent at “Wilson’s Guest House” on Moreland Terrace in OC. My wife and I were married in Ocean City in 1979, but the past 20 years we have been going to Wildwood Crest and spending a couple days in Ocean City as well. We will be at the beach again this summer at the Matador Beachfront Resort in North Wildwood. We wanted to try the other end of the island. Yours is the best beach publication ever!! John & Sue DePalma PS. Enjoyed your book “Hello Sun”!
Editor Note: Due to extenuating circumstances and with a heavy heart I inform all of you that the Ocean City edition of The Sun has ceased operation. My heart belongs wholly again to my hometown, the Wildwoods. The Five Mile Beach Sun by-the-Sea is the golden lining in the cloud, and it will continue to shine as long as I am here and able to keep creating. Back in the late 70s, I brought my five children to Wildwood for two weeks every summer. We stayed on Bennett Avenue. We have so many good memories of our vacations in Wildwood. Now my oldest son achieved his dream of owning a home in North Wildwood. He brings me home each issue of The Sun, which I treasure and read every line and advertisement.Thank you for bringing much joy to my life. I am now 84 years, but still much alive. Keep up the good work. Kathryn Arms

No matter what the weather... there’s no denying we have the most captivating sunrises and sunsets happening at the shore. This one was 9/29/14. “Red sky in the morning, sailor’s take warning!”
After an Nor’eastern in November, these hundred year old railroad tracks appeared on the beaches of Cape May Point. They were a sight to see. They are located up the beach about a mile west of the concrete ship.

Dear Fellow Anglers, Hello and Welcome to the 2015 fishing season. As we start the 2015 fishing season make sure you brush up on the current regulations. Tog has opened and closed before the weather even had a chance to act like spring. Marine Fisheries are pretty slick. First they open the season early knowing that most tog are still offshore due to low water temperatures. Then they close the season as the fish start to appear inshore. The April weather eliminates a lot of fishing days due to sea conditions. After April the rest of the summer season the limit is 1 fish per day. Then Marine Fisheries will boast about the amount of days available to fish. Really? If the seasonal quota is part of the exact science why are the days that are unfishable due to extreme weather not tacked on to the end of the season. Sorry, I get a little upset when I see the impact of these regulations on the recreational fishery. Boat registrations are half of what existed ten years ago. The constant restrictions and regulation on Fish can be blamed for a large share of those lost boaters. Think of the financial impact on the marine industry as a whole. Getting back to the question will we have a spring? Well it will be a very short spring for sure. More importantly the constant wind has consistently blown days on end. I am sure of one species that will show early regardless of water temperatures, wind, or any set of factors. The black drum is persistent. Their numbers are cyclical in nature as in most species, but they seem to always show for the determined and possessed angler known as the drum fisherman. Drum fish can range from 25 to 90 lbs. If caught
on light tackle they are a complete blast and as the youngsters would say “catching a drum is sweet.” When prepared parmesan style they are tasty table fare. The bluefish and stripers made an early May showing with hope it will continue to improve thru May. Some of the early blues were bruisers up to 15 lbs. Without question the opening of Fluke season is the most anticipated opening of all the species. They can be caught with light tackle for the young kids and can provide a great dinner treat. The first decent action will be in the back waters. The fluke who survived the commercial nets come into our back bays to spawn. The end of May will bring Sea bass on the inshore wrecks if they haven’t been caught by commercial fishing or eaten by the federally protected spiny dogfish. Dogfish are a species whose numbers are out of control and have had negative impact on other species. This protection of dogfish lacks regard for the value of our favorite species. Fighting thru the dog fish in the early part of the season can be frustrating. However, anchoring over a productive wreck and catching sea bass can be fast and furious with great fun to catch. The tackle industry constantly develop new products with a complete line of jigs, artificial bait and lures. Checking in with your local Bait and Tackle shops to get the latest successful tackle would be a wise investment of your time. Fishing the Back Bay waters when the fluke first come in can be very successful. As the water warms in the ocean charter and party boats with their experience can get you into the action with blues, sea bass and fluke. The offshore fishing with sharks and tuna starts to take hold in June. No matter who you choose or what method spending a day on the water will get you closer to nature with the appreciation of this blessing which lays practically at your doorstep. Double that joy and pleasure by taking a friend or a love one with you. We owe it to our youngsters to have them experience the reality of life and develop the appreciation of the natural resources from an experience with Mother Nature. Make sure they leave the technology home. Good luck and God Bless.

In honor of Memorial Day, we’d like to fondly remember a special local veteran and his wife who are sadly no longer with us. Happily, their legacy lives on, towering over the Wildwood skies for everyone to enjoy all summer long. So, when you’re lounging in your favorite beach chair this summer and see one of those infamous banner-pulling planes, please take a moment to remember the Tomalino’s, industrious people in Wildwood’s illustrious history who made it all possible. Lois Tomalino, 91, of Cape May Court House, passed away on August 3, 2014. Survived by three of her children, 8 grandchildren and 22 great children, Mrs. Tomalino, along with her husband, sister and brother-in-law, cofounded Paramount Air Service and the Pit Barbeque Restaurant in North Wildwood. Following WWII in 1945, her late husband, Andre, a glider pilot, started Paramount Air Service. As a fitting tribute to their much-loved, hardworking parents, their son and daughter sent a banner flying majestically over the island last August, indicating their union in heaven and flight among the angels.

ANY TIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT! ANY TIME OF THE YEAR!
Two ‘scruffy’ college freshmen who were featured in the Atlantic City Press, 1975
The Skinny Man We were just two scruffy college freshmen and our dorm was a beat up trailer in a park adjacent to the main entrance to the campus. You might have thought that we were enrolled at Oregon and had been gone for months, when in fact we were just up the road at Cumberland County College in Vineland and had only been away from home for four days. It was a bright, sunny Friday morning. Neither of us felt like going to class. We found a scrap of cardboard, spelled out ‘Wildwood’ in block print with a magic marker, and took our position along the shoulder of Route 47 South. The little car with the Atlantic City Press logo on the door was travelling in the opposite direction when the driver spotted us. His head spun around and he made a hasty Uturn. He took our picture and asked us all of the questions that pertained to our being on Delsea Drive with our thumbs hanging out and the photograph appeared in that Sunday’s edition of the paper. John Freeman and I had known each other since our middle school days at Philip Baker. We were always friendly but we travelled in different circles. Going into our junior year at Wildwood High I realized that I needed to make some changes and one of them was to try and lose weight. We were both members of the track team so I asked John, a railthin distance runner with big feet and a bright playful smile, to run with me before practice. He gladly agreed. Each day right after class we would head down
by Joseph Russo
to Maxwell Field and jog on the sidewalks around the perimeter. As I huffed along, he barely broke a sweat and we talked about all subjects under the sun. A friendship was quickly forged (from that day on I fondly referred to him as “the skinny man”). I started to hang around with his gang and when our senior year was coming to a close we decided to enroll at Cumberland together. That is how we wound up on Delsea Drive thumbing our way back home. When I look back on what his friendship meant to me, I take into account the fact that John always had the ability to make me laugh, a gift which I hold in high regard. He was smart, he had a sharp wit, and he was a champion “stone breaker.” Some of his ripostes even had messages behind them: he made you stop and think. I never even minded being the butt of his jokes and I purposely left myself wide open sometimes just to hear what he would come up with. And he always delivered. Every time, he would. Over time we drifted apart, pulled in different directions by life the way all of us are, and our interactions became few and far between. When they did occur I always savored them because they presented us with a chance once again to be the kids jogging before track practice, or the homesick roommates preserved by a photograph that made us famous in Wildwood for about fifteen minutes. And I would always let John take a shot.

Welcome to Wildwood by Steven J. Clark
Welcome to Wildwood Wildwood days we have enjoyed Through the years we have danced the night away Walking along the water’s edge, holding hands with our summer loves Enjoying the warm summer breezes blowing through our hair While the summer sunsets in the west side of town go down Restaurants we have eaten at as kids While staying in the motels along the avenue People walking for miles along the crowded boardwalk As the tramcars ride by with the sounds of fun “Watch the Tram Car Please” blaring down the walk While screaming tourist yells come from the piers Oh how we love those “Wildwood days” The smells of cooked foods, while slurping a fountain soda Early morning bike rides along the boardwalk for miles Giving our guests everything our island has to offer.

Boardwalk Bike Rides by Al Alven of Wildwood 365 Early morning bike ride on the boards, anyone? Just imagine it... The weather is mild, not yet hot as the sun has yet to reach its zenith, but warm and comfortable. A soothing breeze glides in from the ocean, bringing with it the salty scent of the rolling tides. Your senses are also filled with the sensations of the Boardwalk, which is itself still waking up - slowly... yawning... stretching... in preparation for the day ahead. You hear but don't particularly pay attention to the rumble of storefront gates, as nearby shops open for the day. You are more in-tune to the gentle symphony of hundreds of bike tires rolling over thousands of wooden boards. Whether riding or strolling, you feel the sensation as you move, in unison with the music of the morning. Before you even realize it, the scents of peppers, pizza and steak are everywhere, but not overpowering. They join seamlessly with nautical nuances, small brush strokes in a larger masterpiece. The sounds of bicycle bells ringing and families laughing add emphasis to the joy you feel, simply being in your happy place. You may catch yourself for a moment, thinking about how many days you have left here... 5, 4, 3 days ("Oh no, my vacation has hit the halfway mark!")... Most of us do that, simply because there's a part of us that never wants to leave. But, guess what, we never really do. And if you've read this far and have identified with even one aspect of the above, that proves it. Bittersweet emotion may linger for a bit, but soon you are back in the moment. Now, that seaside breeze brings with it some new gifts - perhaps the unmistakable scent of sunscreen, a whiff of coffee or cotton candy. As you wave to smiling strangers passing in the opposite direction, you start thinking ahead... Where to grab breakfast? And what you're going to do after (maybe some mini-golf or a boating adventure... some beach time, a family dinner and amusements tonight!) Suddenly, your perfect Wildwood day emerges before you. You've imagined it, maybe even rehearsed it in your mind dozens of times, but now, here you are... Good Morning, everyone!

A Little Bit of Wildwood History Nearing the end of the 19th Century, traveling options other than by railroad grew popular as the automobile became an household item. In 1903 they began navigating to and from Holly Beach over a bulky system of logs and pilings. After 50 years, this wooden bridge was replaced

Take a trip back to Wildwood circa 1905! Beyond the highly developed landscape we’ve come to recognize with its condos and townhomes, motels and boardwalk, lies an obliterated landscape we can hardly imagine once existed. In Wildwood Ways and Down East Wilds, Thomas Martindale describes this dense maritime forest of innumerable wildflowers, twisted cedars, pine, and holly that put the ‘wild’ in Wildwood on this once bridgeless and solitary island. Rolling dunes of ‘sugar sand’ wrapped around the island on the east side, while marshland and bay waters bordered the west side, forging streams that once emptied into ponds and lakes deep within the ‘woods.’
The author writes fluidly of the area’s history, tales of wild cattle, buried pirate treasure and crabbing in Grassy Sound, as well as a chapter designated to the somber solitudes of the Maine wilderness. Since the book’s illustrations were originally created for the Philadelphia Inquirer and The (Original) Wildwood Sun, it is fitting to be republished by Dorothy Kulisek, the editor of The Five Mile Beach Sun (since 2004). She became aware of the book when first approached by Richard Dietz, a collector of local Wildwood history, to publish excerpts of this enduring Wildwood narrative in her paper. They both felt the importance of republishing for the sake of the preservation of printed materials, as well as for local interest. It will be available for purchase in many local businesses including the Hereford Lighthouse gift shop. If you live or vacation in the Wildwoods, than you will love reading Thomas Martindale’s first person perspective in which he so eloquently describes its timelessness~ sparking your imagination with sketches and photographs that are some of the island’s earliest pictorial documents. Whether it be on a beach chair, a porch rocker, or in the comforts of your home, reading Wildwood Ways and Down East Wilds will incite your love of the Wildwoods evermore.

“Friendship is not a big thing, it is a million small things.” ~Anon.
dear Just wanted to thank you for writing and publishing the wonderful SUN paper. I live in Somers Point, NJ and get every issue made. A friend (Margate local) feels the same way. We love Cape May County and especially WILDWOOD! Any excuse to visit is what we enjoy...we go to the Blessing of the Ocean day in August at St. Ann’s instead of locally, and make routine trips for bicycle rides on the Boardwalk or walks along the Sea wall, or just to eat at the “Star Diner” in North Wildwood, we do this as much as possible. I also love Ocean City, but wow! WILDWOOD is something else! Your paper is such a joy to read and you write it so well, with such sincerity. I felt compelled to tell you after reading the Nov-Dec issue. When my friend and I leave North Wildwood while on the causeway we look back and are sad to leave. But thank God we live so close by. Thank you again for keeping so connected to Wildwood. May you have many more years of writing and publishing your “Tremendous” SUN paper! Sincerely, Chuck Harms P.S. I have several DOO WW magnets on my refrigerator and my friend has them on his truck! Dear Chuck, The SUN paper & The WILDWOODS love you right back! Next time you’re in town, let us know so we can take your picture for the paper! Have a happy summer by-the-sea! Shine on! Dorothy

Memento mori in Latin means ‘remember that you have to die’ is the medieval Latin theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.
Memento Mori By Bob Ingram He was a lifeguard in Wildwood and he and his rowing partner had almost won the South Jerseys the week before he enlisted, an amazing performance for two rookies who had never rowed together before that 1942 season. But they were big and strong and smart and rowed like one man, maybe because they’d played three sports together in high school. He’d just graduated, like he’d promised his parents he would before joining up, and they reluctantly signed the enlistment papers because he was still only 17. Timmy, his partner, was already 18, and they’d decided they’d go in the Marines and stay together as long as they could. There was no “buddy system” then. The country had been caught woefully undermanned to fight a world war, and even the Marines were pushing recruits through abbreviated, breakneck training to bring the ranks up to the numbers needed. If he and Timmy got separated in the shuffle, so be it. Chalk it up to the newly popular saying, “Don’t you know there’s a war on?” And the gods of war smiled on them, at first. They breezed through basic training at Parris Island, together in the same platoon. They even got a 10-day leave before shipping out from San Diego, and they came home and spent a week on the beach, rookies now in name only. Their relatives saw them off on the train to Philadelphia, and amid the hugs and tears and clasped hands there was the strained air that always accompanies sending young men off to fight. The fortunes of war, unfair and uncaring, were now in play. The deadly game had begun in earnest. Fate was the captain of battle and blood was the coin of that lethal realm. The Third Marines were the tip of the spear that pierced the nightmare jungles

and scaled the unforgiving slopes of Guadalcanal, a blasted speck in the endless Pacific. They faced a fanatical enemy, well-trained and provisioned, the eager youth of a Samurai military culture whose highest values were honor and death. The fighting was savage and unforgiving, no quarter asked nor given. And he and Timmy survived that inferno; their rifle company suffered almost 70 percent casualties, but they were finally replaced and limped to the rear, their eyes at the distance of those who have looked into the hell of combat. They licked their wounds in garrison, and trained the replacements that arrived daily. He and Timmy were old heads now, and kept their distance from the recruits. Friends died too easily out here. They sensed how fragile their own friendship had become, as if hardened to a breakable edge by the furnace of combat. They knew the odds now. Then it was on to Bougainville, a dot in the Solomon Islands, and it was there that the sand in the glass of war ran out. Timmy was a heartbeat behind him in getting into their foxhole when the first mortar round came in. That’s all he remembered. He woke up three days later on a hospital ship; he had been concussed so badly that the field doctors at first thought he was in a coma. The world now was strangely silent after the tumult of battle, and then he realized he was deaf. He cried out into the silence and heard nothing, only felt his voice on his tongue and in his throat. Both his eardrums had been punctured, and he was being shipped back to Schofield Barracks at Pearl Harbor and light duty while he regained his hearing. Of Timmy, he could find out nothing, at
first. He roamed the silent ship, looking for a familiar face among the wounded who might know Timmy’s fate. There was nobody. None of the medics or doctors knew anything either. Finally at Pearl Harbor, he went through the travails of long-distance calling to reach Timmy’s parents, and from them he heard the terrible news: the mortar shrapnel had mutilated Timmy’s legs so badly that they had been amputated below the knees at a field hospital on Bougainville, and he was currently in a veteran’s hospital in San Diego undergoing rehabilitation and being fitted with prosthetic legs. In Hawaii, his hearing recovered, he was spared any further combat, although he was in a unit at Schofield Barracks training for the invasion of Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped. It was another six months before he was mustered out, and he was back in Wildwood and on the beach again for the 1946 season. He seemed essentially unchanged, but quieter. He didn’t laugh as easily in the guard shack or play any lifeguard antics. He talked on the phone to Timmy, still in hospital in San Diego, regularly and they’d planned to go out for a row once Timmy had fully mastered his new legs and was back home. On a sunny morning in July, he was just coming out of the headquarters shack when he heard a familiar voice. “Great day for a row, man!” Timmy was walking toward him in a stifflegged gait. He wore sneakers, khaki pants, and a white tee shirt. They embraced and beheld each other. “Check this out,” Timmy said and raised a pantleg to show him a shiny artificial leg. “Now let’s get out there.” Timmy had been a trifle awkward getting seated and arranging his oars in the locks, but he still rowed with the same power. They paused beyond the breakers, bobbing in the current, listening to the water and the gull cries. “I thought of this every day,” Timmy said. “It kept me going.” And for that bright and perfect time, in that boat, under the endless sky, they were forever young and there were no wars.

Uncle Eddie Berg: The Boy Who Fell in Love with Wildwood
by Al Alven of Wildwood 365
He had been to the seashore before. He loved Atlantic City - Steel Pier, the larger-than-life spectacles like the famous Diving Horse, Captain Starn’s Restaurant, the Boardwalk and the simple pleasures of the salt air and surf. But Patricia insisted that this new place they were heading to was different. In the years to come, Eddie wouldn’t remember much about the ride down, other than the sense that it took forever to get there. The seemingly-endless scenery of the tree-lined Garden State Parkway validated his suspicion that he was headed toward some kind of glorified camping resort. He was sure of it. When the bus finally crossed the bridge, however, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Before him unfolded a place unlike anything he had ever seen, with a pulsating energy he could not have imagined. His most vivid memory was pulling into the old bus terminal on Wildwood Avenue, next to the Martinique Motel & Club. Across the street, the bright pink flamboyancy and neon elves adorning Laura’s Fudge Shop made him feel like he had just arrived in some kind of fantasy land. After exiting the bus, Eddie caught his first glimpse of the Boardwalk, a half block away. Sensing the excitement, he wanted to go there immediately; but first, he had to trek a few blocks to the modest boarding house where he, his sister and his mom would spend the night. There was little disappointment, as fascinating sights jumped from every side street they passed - grand, rustic hotels with towering witches’ turrets, colorful motels with big, bold signage... even the corner delis and laundromats had zany, playful monikers. This was how he envisioned Vegas, except way better and supposedly right by the ocean!
Courtesy of David Williams
The sun was just beginning to rise over the factories and smokestacks of Kensington, as 11-year-old Eddie Berg peered out of his bedroom window. A sense of anticipation abounded on this briliiant, late spring morning. After all, a great adventure lied ahead, as Eddie’s older sister Patricia had promised him. Downstairs, Patricia and their mother, Florence, were wrapping up fresh sandwiches and snacks for the trip ahead. Within an hour or so, Eddie, Patricia and Florence were on the #3 Bus, en route to 47th & Market in Downtown Philadelphia. There, they boarded the “Sea Gull Express,” bound for Wildwood, New Jersey. “Wildwood.” Eddie tried to comprehend and envision it, over and over. All he could picture was this forest-like place, overrun with shrubs and creatures of nature, with pathways that led to a nearly-deserted beach (less than a century prior, his imagination would have been quite accurate).
I don’t think anyone loved the Golden Nugget more than my Uncle Eddie did!

“Follow the river and you will find the sea .” ~French Proverb Lorraine & Michael Celinski of Wildwood, recently took The Sun on vacation to New Orleans. They learned so much about their history & culture within a 10 day visit. They enjoyed a southern cruise on the Mississippi River aboard the “Creole Queen” A City bus tour was taken which included the 9th ward, destroyed by the Hurricane Katrina. They saw the flooded home of Fats Domino. It was told he would not leave his home and authorities found him alive in his attic. It was pointed out if we kept an “eye out” we may see Fats performing at a jazz session in the Quarter. They dined at many great restaurants, visited their cousin, Chrissy Vanella, who is the Ast. Director for Intl. Students & Scholar Services at Loyola U. They visited Mardi Gras World, lunched at Drago’s Seafood Restaurant, ate Po’ Boys. They visited St. Louis Cemetery. They ended their trip with a visit to Café Du Monde for coffee and beignets!

A serious moment between Nigella & Mia in the kitchen
This winter, in addition to being the proud chef at her family’s Wildwood Crest restaurant, Gia, Mia Chiarella, a.k.a. “Chefarella,” made her starry debut on the ABC show, The Taste when she earned a spot in Team Nigella’s kitchen. In honor of the auspicious occasion, on Dec. 4th, Wally Lerro, owner of The Bolero, graciously opened his doors to the Wildwoods community to celebrate alongside the Chiarella family. It was a star-studded event for all who attended, as all eyes were glued on the TV screens awaiting Mia’s appearance! On her way to success, Mia was also chosen to be ambassador of a tour through Italy next month, taking in the most delicious sights!
Bethie Chiarella is beyond proud of her Mia, who has worked so hard to get where she is.

If a picture truly is worth a thousand words, than Gia’s life story, and the legacy she inspired, contains a vocabulary too high to calculate. After years spent living all over the country and travelling the world, Patty Dodge has returned to Wildwood to give her family a taste of her childhood. “I wanted my kids and my husband to know what it was like to grow up here,” says the businesswoman and mother of four. “I don’t know how they would know what this was like without experiencing it. Having the opportunity to come back here and share these memories is really important to me.” Growing up in nearby Town Bank, Patty Dodge, then Patty Goldsmith, worked, played, and went to school on the island for most of her young life. She attended Wildwood Catholic High School, and Wildwood High School, where she graduated in ‘79. She worked in Wildwood throughout her summers, at a whole host of locations around the island. “I worked the night shift at a diner,” she said, recalling how she had to get special permission to do so, since she was only 16 at the time. She worked on the ferry as well, and as a waitress at Larkin’s. But she always found time to enjoy the beach and the boardwalk. “After getting off my shift at the diner, I’d go right to the beach and would go to sleep there.” After graduating from high school, Patty attended Stockton College, moving to Florida shortly afterward. She then went on to live in New England and then California, where she met her husband, Jim. Both Patty and Jim are well travelled, but Wildwood holds a special place in their hearts.
“What’s interesting is that Jim & I have travelled all over the world, and of all the places that we have vacationed at, Wildwood has been our favorite vacation spot”, and “once you’re here you get sucked in,” adds Jim. The couple says the boardwalk is a unique feature, as is Wildwood’s signature old-fashioned tackiness. “The t-shirt shops, the rides, the games, the novelties, the hermit crabs… And I’ve not been to any other place that has Skee-ball!” Patty declares. And has Wildwood changed? Not much, says Patty. “There are some obvious differences, the new beautiful town homes and condos, none of that was here. And the rides have changed a lot. I remember riding a lot of different rides. But the overall feel is the same. Even the tram car is still here.” What’s really important to Patty is being able to share all this with her family. “We chose to come here not because it’s the fanciest or the most exotic, but because I really wanted my family to understand and have a sense of what it was like for me as a kid. I’m so glad that I’ve been able to share so much of my childhood with them.” Looking back, she says, “I don’t think I realized what a special place this was growing up. I couldn’t wait to leave and get out of my small town. I’ve travelled the world and don’t think I’ll find anywhere else that has this special place in my heart. If there’s anything I’d like The Sun’s readers to know, it’s to cherish the Wildwoods. It really is a unique place.”

Kelly-girl "The angels are always near to those who are grieving, to whisper to them that their loved ones are safe in the arms of God." Kelly Ann McMonagle, 21, of Northeast Philadelphia and North Wildwood (Archbishop Ryan High School graduate '11) was the beautiful only-child of Joe & Kim McMonagle and niece of The Sun's editor Dorothy McMonagle Kulisek. She was born August 2, 1993 and passed away March 10, 2015 Although her journey here on earth ended so young, we find comfort in knowing it was purposeful. We received many letters, emails and messages that let us know that our beautiful Kelly-girl touched many lives near and far with her kind and tender heart. Beautiful on the outside as well as the inside, Kelly and her cousins made for the perfect cover models for the May-June 2014 issue of The Sun, giving her the opportunity to play a role that suited her so well, the ultimate bathing beauty. She brought much joy into so many lives. Now, she’s taken on the role of our beautiful angel, and, as quotation anthologist Terri Guillemets once said, “Angels sail back to God on the sea of joy.” God has given us peace in the assurance that she is home in heaven. When the time comes for us to leave this world, we are sure to find her on a heavenly beach, basking under the sun, in her happy place.
Kelly loved posing for the cover of The Sun with her cousins and friends.

The Roman Catholic tradition is that the manger be empty in the Nativity scene until the time of His birth is to be celebrated.

Keeping it Cool and Old School!
W
hen creating the cover photo for this Memorial Day issue, we here at The Sun were naturally inspired by that longheld tradition of creatively capturing life’s treasured moments by the sea. We know those who visit the shore never want to leave, and often photographs make for the most sentimental of souvenirs. Even those shot in a studio still offer a glimpse into perfect coastal living. Honoring The Sun’s signature touch of all things vintage, the Wildwood lovin’ Carey family proved to be the perfect cover models, as classic and modern were blended to perfection. The photo shoot took place in Shooter’s Old Time Photo Studio on the boardwalk at Cedar Ave. with the aid of retro swimwear and props and the addition of an old beach background photo (on the cover), which enhanced the effect of those timeless boardwalk studio portraits from another memorable Wildwood era. Greenboards are used when a new background is to be inserted. Studios of old, used backgrounds that were typically paintings of the rolling sea as seen in these vintage Wildwood shots.

Sam’s Pizza’s Annual Opening ~ A Slice of Summer in Mid-February

26th & Boardwalk Wildwood, NJ

Just a reminder for pizza lovers oblivious to boardwalk dining; seagulls love pizza! Upon seeing a hot slice in your hands, they will swoop down in the hopes of making your dinner theirs, eerily reminiscent of a scene from “The Birds.” As the sign on Sam’s cash register states: “We are not responsible for slices that are eaten by seagulls!” Wise words of advice for hungry pizza lovers…
“Blast from the Past” SAM’S PIZZA CREW from 2007
by AL ALVEN of WILDWOOD 365
WINTER, like Spring, Summer or Fall, is as much a frame of mind as a time of year. While 20-degree days and bone-chilling winds are not exactly conducive to bikini beach frolics or sand castle-building contests, our capacity to enjoy the sensations of such simple pleasures can never be taken away. This is why we dream. There is something particularly powerful about the senses of smell and taste. Scent, in particular, has been scientifically proven to trigger memory and feelings of nostalgia, even thoughts that have been “lost” or long forgotten. Every year, I look forward to THAT moment. There was a time that I didn’t even think about it until it happened, but I’ve since become conditioned to expect it. It’s the instant when that first whiff of boardwalk pizza, combined with the crisp, cold seashore air, enters my nostrils and fills my lungs. Oh, I would go as far as to say that it’s a life-affirming experience. Sure, we could all live without pizza (... maybe). But this is so much more than that. It’s about reconnecting with my happy place. And, most importantly, sharing in what has become an annual ritual with family and friends, old and new. Over the past decade, the opening of Sam’s Pizza Palace (26th & Boardwalk) on the Friday leading into Presidents Day Weekend has become one of the great new Wildwood traditions. This year, the date happened to fall on February 14th - Valentine’s Day. Quite fitting, considering the love affair that has bloomed between this nearly six-decadeold institution and its dedicated fans. I arrived with my brother, Dave, shortly after the doors opened at 11 a.m., and immediately scanned the spacious dining room under the Shore Plaza Beach Resort. It took mere seconds to locate some familiar faces. And then a few more. And then a warm greeting from the wait staff and a wave or three from behind the counter,
and we’re off and running. Right then and there, as far as I’m concerned, Summer begins. Even though Memorial Day is still more than 100 days off. Once seated, the order is easy - “One large pie, half plain and half pep, and two birch beers.” It rolls off the tongue without much thought. And then it’s almost akin to waiting for the main course at Thanksgiving dinner to arrive. That first piping hot serving looks so savory, I always hesitate before the first bite. Because it won’t last long. (And yes, I take a photo of my first slice every time. I noticed this year that I certainly wasn’t alone.) There’s an unparalleled sense of community that defines Opening Day. As the noon hour approaches and the seats and booths fill up, smiles and gleeful chatter from local residents and members of the work force abounds. Full tables are claimed by parties from various city offices, beach crew and maintenance workers, Morey’s Piers’ departments... “How are you, Tony? It’s been such a long winter, great to see ya!” “Ann, you made it! I haven’t seen you since August. How are the kids and grandkids?” “Bob! I thought that groundhog saw his shadow. Guess even he loves pizza too.” I always like to face the door, not just for the great view of the Boardwalk, but to see who’s about to pop in next. And to catch the expressions on the faces of people coming and going, as they recognize and greet each other. It’s not uncommon to see someone with a filled belly turn around and take another seat for a second lunch with good company. And speaking of good company, the spirit of the day carries far and wide. Every year, I run into people who make the trip specifically for that first slice, on the first day. Daytrippers from Philly are one thing, but in past years I’ve met visitors from as far away as Western PA, Maryland and New York. This year, travelers from Delaware. And more arrive as the holiday weekend progresses. Last year, a retired man from Florida noted on Facebook that he was going to try to make the trip. I’m not sure if he ever did, but he added “If I can’t get up the coast before summer, I hope everyone enjoys. Have a slice for me!” That’s what it’s all about. No matter the distance or the conditions outside. And so, with those first slices, the tradition continues and begins anew . . .

the Sun by-the-Sea
“Every sunrise is an invitation for us to arise and brighten someone’s day.” - Richelle E. Goodrich
“While you were away. . “ “If we had no Winter, the Spring would not be so pleasant.”
The City of Wildwood by-the-Sea Presents the
~Anne Bradstreet, early English poet
A bit of breezy chat about the island’s happenings from Labor Day 2014 through Memorial Day 2015 Before winter took hold of the
calendar, we by-the-sea happily took hold of “The Second Season,” starting our autumn days by breezily shifting from sunny skies and sultry temperatures to shorter days and cooler nights. As tradition dictates, we honored the Irish in all of us, had a feast at the Olde Time Italian Festival, found the music within during the Fabulous ‘50s and witnessed the skies light up at the Hereford Lighthouse Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. We gave thanks for our many blessings, appreciating even more the glow emanating from that infamous Ferris Wheel during those otherwise dark nights. We, of course, created the sandiest of Wish Lists, asking Santa for light snow (for scenic as opposed to shoveling purposes) and an everpresent sun hovering nearby to remind us that clouds can never conceal our preternaturally bright abode. We knew hidden deep beneath those winter days, spring was patiently waiting to make its pleasant presence known (so we could politely give Old Man Winter the boot in place of more fashionable flip-flops). As the chilliest of seasons makes way for the sunniest of times, we’re reminded that “Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind it.” (thank you, Scottish writer Samuel Smiles). Before we journey toward another hopeful, sunny Wildwood season, we interrupt your regularly scheduled seaside break for a brief reflection on all the newsworthy events that occurred in our storybook town, from the bay, to the beach and the boardwalk, and everywhere in between, While You Were Away. . .
About Town The 7th Annual Seafood & Music Festival, scheduled for October 4th, was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce will host a Wildwoods Music & Food Fest on Saturday, May 30th along Atlantic Avenue between Schellenger and Wildwood Avenues. The FREE, family-friendly festival will have live music, crafts and food vendors.
A Sign of the Wildwood Times The Wildwood sign, located on the Boardwalk at Rio Grande Avenue, was completely refurbished and resurfaced in the fall of 2014. The 19-foot-high landmark sign, affectionately known as ‘the Hollywood sign of the East Coast,’ has become a must-see sight since its presentation in 2008.
Lives Well Lived in the Wildwoods Reverend Thomas Goslin, a retired minister and long-time Wildwood Crest resident, died on September 13, 2014 in Modesto, California, where he resided following the death of his wife, Julia. Mr. Goslin graduated from Wildwood High School and maintained a residence, as well as a place in his heart, in Wildwood Crest following his move to California. Frank Feraco passed away on September 15th, 12 days after the death of his wife, Connie. Like Mr. Goslin, the long-time residents made a big difference in our small town. As school teachers at Wildwood High, the Feraco’s, who were the proud parents of nine children, had a profound effect on the lives of their students as well as on the seaside community they loved. To celebrate her love of Wildwood, Mrs. Feraco shared her Easter memories in the very first issue of The Sun that was published on April 1, 2004! Former North Wildwood Mayor Bill Henfey, who served from 2006 to 2013, sadly passed away on October Read on! Continues on next page. . .

“ W ildwood - a new season“ 21st at the age of 65. He had been ill since the fall of 2013. He retired in 2013, wanting to spend more time with his family. Henfey, affectionately nicknamed, “Blacktop Billy” due to all of the road work he accomplished while in office, was dedicated to the community and to improving the quality of the town for its residents. More than 75 infrastructure projects were completed during his time in office. From street work to seawall and sewer reconstruction, Henfey continually worked toward the improvement of the town he loved. He is also recognized for persuading the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority to switch to single stream recycling, a move that has saved municipalities thousands of dollars. Prior to his role as mayor, Henfey was a North Wildwood councilman and spent 20 years in municipal office. Before his commitment to elected office, he was a patrolman for the North Wildwood Police Department for nine years, then a detective. Henfey, a successful businessman, was inducted into the New Jersey State League of Municipalities Elected Officials Hall of Fame in March 2014 and has been credited as being “the driving force behind the City’s purchase of the 8th Street Field,” which now bears the name, “Bill Henfey Park.” The tract includes a city block of almost 2.3 acres bounded by 7th, 8th, Central and Atlantic Avenues. According to Mayor Patrick Rosenello, the diocese has allowed the public to use the privately-owned open space for the past 60 years. Although the park will still be used by Wildwood Catholic, it will now be a public park and will also remain the only emergency landing site for medical helicopters on the island. Included in the plans were upgrading the softball field on the eastern side of the tract, constructing a new basketball court, two playgrounds for different ages, benches and pavilions, a long-jump pit, all new fencing and planting the block with shade trees. There is also a multipurpose field for soccer, field hockey and other sports as well as a new building, which will
house offices, restrooms, first aid, and equipment storage areas. Requests are already coming in for use of the new park. To honor the man who had such an impact on the city of North Wildwood and his newly named park, Rosenello stated, “We want to have the whole community use it.”
A Lasting Legacy Former Mayor Anthony Catanoso passed away on November 21th at the age of 97. Catanoso was North Wildwood’s longest serving mayor, holding office from November 14, 1958 to January 1, 1985. In 1928, 12year old Tony and his family moved to North Wildwood. Phyllis, his wife of 66 years, stated her father-in-law opened the first Italian grocery store in North Wildwood, possibly the first in Cape May County, where the nine Catanoso children worked. For 20 years, future mayor Catanoso owned his own store, the Central Shop at 17th and Central, complete with soda fountain and patent medicines. While in office, Catanoso was credited with the construction of the recreation/community center, constructing the first sea walls as well as a police station and obtaining the grant for Allen Park. According to former city employee Steve Murray, Catanoso created the original plans for the restoration of Route 147 into North Wildwood. The renovation of the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse is recognized as one of his prized achievements. Murray stated Catanoso was a forward thinker when it came to historic preservation, even ahead of Cape May’s hard work. Catanoso’s contributions are lasting and far reaching. Current North Wildwood Mayor Patrick Rosenello, who knew Catanoso for many years, said that the city of North Wildwood is the great place it is today because of Catanoso’s 27 years of loyal service. Catanoso kept in touch with the new mayor, offering insights as well as history into North Wildwood, a town he loved and made a much better place for generations to come.

5 Miles of Smiles! 100% guaranteed to make you smile a mile wide!
A man was walking down the beach one morning after a storm. In the distance he saw a boy picking up starfish one by one and gently throwing them back into the sea. As the man approached the boy, he asked, “Why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time?” The boy explained that the starfish would die if left in the morning sun. The man exclaimed, “But there must be thousands of starfish. How can your efforts make any difference?” The boy looked down at the starfish in his hand and as he threw it to safety in the sea, he smiled and said, ”It makes a difference to this one!” Because this story exemplifies the philosphy embraced by AtlantiCare, we now recognize the starfish as our symbol.

“While you were away. . “ Other Notable Passings Beloved Fudgy Wudgy Man Andy Markee died on November 11th. He was a fond beach fixture and a welcomed sight on a hot summer day, selling his frozen treats within a rolling cooler along North Wildwood’s beach. Anna Zuzulock, age 99, died November 23rd, 3 months shy of being a centenarian. She will be fondly remembered by her family and friends for her lucky love of “BINGO” as well as her Wildwood businesses over the years, including the original Crest Hardware Store on Aster Ave., the Colonial Restaurant and Anchor Inn. Joe Russo, lifelong Wildwood resident and former owner of Russo’s Bar and Restaurant, died on January 12th. Russo, along with his sisters, owned Russo’s in Wildwood for over 50 years before selling the business in 2008. Look for his story tribute in the next issue written by his son, Joseph. Tom Jorgensen, 95, passed away on February 24th. Tom, who posed for our cover of the 2008 Holiday edition of The Sun (along with his trusty fishing gear), was a Norwegian immigrant and graduate of Wildwood High who had a deep love for fishing and the sea, as well as being one of the most beloved baseball coaches in the history of Wildwood Little League. Don Long, who along with his wife Dorothy, opened Duffer’s Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant and Miniature Golf & Arcade over 40 years ago, passed away on February 25th. He is remembered for being a loving father, grandfather and husband with a true work ethic and good-natured sense of humor, and loved to enjoy a good meal and his favorite dessert with his wife and family at Duffer’s. Joseph Jay Larkin of Larkin’s Restaurant passed away peacefully on March 14th with his loving family by his bedside. Although born in Lansdowne, PA, Mr. Larkin was raised in Wildwood, where he attended Wildwood High School. Suzanne Mahoney Cusella, a muchloved member of the community, died March 15, 2015 following a long battle with cancer. Born in Philadelphia, she was a proud seaside resident for
the past 42 years. Over the years, she worked as a waitress for many local restaurants before becoming a treasured employee at J. Byrne Insurance Company for more than 27 years. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Nino, two sons and daughterin-laws, and three grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by her extended family, friends and colleagues. She will be remembered for her warm and loving spirit and for her true passion for shore living. Peter Yecco, 90, passed away on March 21st. He was born in Paulsboro, N.J., raised in Philadelphia and moved to Wildwood in the 1940s. Mr. Yecco retired in 1991 following 45 years of employment with the City of Wildwood. He was an officer in the Wildwood Police Department and held the title of City Clerk for 18 years. He also owned and operated Burger Spot In North Wildwood during the late 1970s. A devoted family man as well as an industrious worker, Mr. Yecco is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Helen Marie, a son, three daughters and 11 grandchildren.
A Fond Remembrance Kaitlin Anzelone, who tragically passed away at the age of 20 in the summer of 2005 after a sevenmonth battle with leukemia, was fondly remembered at a ceremony held in September at Maxwell Field, courtesy of the City of Wildwood in conjunction with Wildwood High School. Aside from her brilliance on the soccer field, Kaitlin is best known for her other athletic accomplishments at Wildwood High School. She was part of three state and four South Jersey championship basketball teams as well as a part of a Cape-Atlantic League championship softball team at Wildwood before playing three sports as a freshman at Division III Rutgers-Camden University.
A SUNsational Shoulder Season The Fabulous ‘50s and Beyond Weekend, held October 17 and 18 courtesy of the Greater Wildwood Chamber of Commerce, remains an integral part in a long-held effort to build tourism during the “off season.” A public relations campaign was started in the 1970s to shine a

the Sun by-the-Sea
“People who love to eat are always the best people.” ~Julia Child
“ W ildwood - a new season“ spotlight on the Wildwoods during the fall season, now referring to that “off” time of year as “The Other Season” and “The Second Season.” The event featured a performance by the Bill Haley’s Original Comets in recognition of the late Bill Haley, who popularized his hit “Rock Around the Clock” in performances at the Starlight Ballroom and the Hofbrau House. It’s been said that the group performed every summer from 1950 to 1955 at the Hofbrau, which later became the site of the Beach Terrace Motor Inn. The Wildwood festivities paid homage to that song. Motels and hotels boasted 98 percent occupancy during those times. Soon, others were onboard looking to increase “The Shoulder Season,” welcoming the Irish and Italian festivals, Captain Kidd treasure hunts and Mummers brigade and string band weekends and various parades that earned the Wildwoods the label, “Parade Capital of New Jersey.” Swinging back to the 11 th Annual Fabulous ‘50s and Beyond Weekend, the two-day celebration harmoniously paid tribute to the Wildwoods’ part in the birth of rock ‘n roll. The celebration began with a dance party featuring the Nifty ‘50s Dance Band with David Christopher and DJ Ralph Warzy. Saturday afternoon included outdoor fun and music during the free Fabulous ‘50s Street Fair at Fox park. The fair highlighted a classic car show, a Doo-Wop ‘50s Bus Tour and several vendors offering ‘50s memorabilia, food and more. The Saturday night concert, which took place in the Oceanfront Arena at the Wildwoods Convention Center, featured Bowzer’s Rock ‘n Roll Party hosted by Bowzer, formerly of Sha Na Na, who presented a musical line-up featuring Johnny Tillotson, The Tymes, Gene Chandler-The Duke of Earl, Fred Parris & The Five Satins, Bowzer & The Stingrays, and, of course, the Bill Haley’s Original Comets.
Artistic Moments Susan Daly, a Northfield-based artist who has created murals for Atlantic City casinos and restaurants for over 30 years, brought her artistic talents to Pacific Avenue to complete the
Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority’s second Icon Wall Mural on the side of Alumni Grill at Oak and Pacific Avenues. In May 2014, Peter Bieling created the first mural of Bobby Rydell, located on Roberts Avenue and the Boardwalk. Ben Rose, GWTIDA’s director of marketing, explained the authority’s commitment throughout the winter months to identify other walls that can be painted with Wildwood icons. The GWTIDA received many different responses when they sought out Wildwood fans on Facebook and its website, asking who or what they thought made for iconic Wildwood pieces. Tracey DeFault, executive director of the Greater Wildwoods Chamber of Commerce, was thrilled with the mural, believing it will help rejuvenate the downtown. The chamber’s office is situated within the building it is painted on. The mural’s unveiling kicked off the Fabulous ‘50s and Beyond Weekend with Bill Haley and His Comets last original members Joe D’Ambrosio and Dick Richards in attendance. A Fresh Start for the Fresh Air Home Attorney Ron Gelzunas, along with his wife Angel Daniels, of North Wildwood, and his Cape May County charity, the Children’s Fresh Air Home, have been providing disadvantaged children a shore vacation since 1896. Gelzunas believes, “It’s bigger than that. It’s not just a vacation. It’s an opportunity to take a child and show them there’s more to the world than the difficult, narrow circumstances in which they live. It opens their horizons and shows there are better things out there. This is sort of a life-transforming event.” The $1.5 million renovation of the four-story guesthouse on 11th Avenue in North Wildwood will include a new, handicap accessible elevator and central heat and air conditioning, enabling the charity to develop its operations beyond the summer. Dog Beach Days With the start of a new, dog-friendly year, the city approved the site for the North Wildwood Dog Park to be located between 24th & 25th Avenues Continues on next page. . .

City Improvements The City of Wildwood appropriated approximately $3.3 million in bonds to be used on improvements, including new playground equipment for Fox Park, firearms, a new recording system for the police interview room, computer system upgrades, police and fire radio equipment and initial funds for capping the Back Bay landfill and renovations for the Young’s Avenue boardwalk bathroom. Several items were set to be reimbursed with resources from FEMA and grant funds.
Rising above the Floods For residents of West Wildwood, being connected to the larger Five Mile Island by a single two-lane bridge has caused many problems connected with back-bay flooding, especially in the event of an emergency. Emergency management services and the borough’s firehouse reside on low ground on Neptune Avenue, making entry by emergency vehicles to the community during flooding a serious problem. As a result, South State Inc. received a contract for the FEMA grant-mitigation of Neptune Avenue. The flooding project will elevate the land in the area, granting emergency vehicles better access.

Mayor Patrick Rosenello announced the hiring of four new fulltime Public Works employees, but mentioned the total number of employees was down. The number of employees was reduced to 20 fulltime and one supervisor, which is down from 38 when Rosenello took office. When Rosenello was first on council ap-
proximately 11 years ago, the number was that high. As work was underway on the 2015 budget, they planned on hiring more temporary and seasonal Public Works employees and less full time with more workers needed in the summer.
A Farmer’s Market Delight On August 30, 2014, a grand finale celebrated the successful first season of the Downtown Wildwood Farmers Market. Along with free parking, visitors were treated to DOO WW magnets and tote bags as well as a live performance by Alicia Cacci Caprioni and Bill Caterini of “HAPPY,” collaborators on the album (Don’t Be A) Bully-Tolerant Songs for Young Folks. Crowds were welcomed at the Farmers Market held on the corner of Pacific and Schellenger Avenues every Saturday morning in the summer. During the finale, visitors were greeted by a balloon artist and stilt walker as live music courtesy of 98.7 The Coast played as they loaded up on a wide variety of fresh products. The Farmers Market won the “Best New Attraction” award from the Wildwood Chamber of Commerce and “Best of Free Time” award from Catamaran Media. The Grand Re-Opening of the Dowtown Farmers Market will take place Saturday, May 23rd from 8am until 2:30pm. Be sure to pick up your new Free DOO WW magnet design! Through September 5th, the weekly market will be providing fresh fruits and vegetables, Prepared and Specialty Foods, baked goods, plants and flowers, meats, cheeses, and more along with music & Family Entertainment.
The Boardwalk Press A Colorful Ferris Wheel Feat Anthony Canzano, an audio visual technician for Morey’s Piers, had the creative task of designing an 11 minute, computer-controlled light show to be displayed on the giant Ferris wheel on Mariner’s Landing Pier. The impressive project was expected to take approximately a month to be completed. For the displays, the Ferris wheel contains 92,400 LED lights.

“ W ildwood - a new season“ The lights of the Ferris Wheel brilliantly light up the island as the seasons are creatively commemorated, with a ghost and a pumpkin illuminating Halloween, a tree and Santa brightening up Christmas, a green shamrock at St. Patty’s Day and the Easter Bunny shining the way to spring!
Shore Surveys and Kong Mania The always-innovative team at Morey’s Piers conducted a Kong survey when creating Surfside Pier’s 60 feet + high recreation of an unforgettable attraction. On the advice of their participants, they altered the gorilla’s appearance to a less-scary, more Wildwood-friendly version. Featuring the Eighth Wonder of the World in an “I love WW” t-shirt, riders will circle Kong on a journey through KONG & Co. located under the ride where they can shop for skate apparel, KONG gear and Morey’s Piers merchandise, and of course, chocolate covered bananas.
A Swinging Design The Kiddie Swings on Mariner’s Landing not only got a new paint job, but now feature pictures of happy little riders courtesy of photos people graciously submitted of their kids on the swings.
Artful Awards Morey’s Piers won the Judge’s Choice Award for [artBOX]. Make sure to pay a visit to this creative and adventurous pier.
Creative Wildwood Collection David Macomber, resident artist for Morey’s Adventure Pier’s artBOX, has been bringing his unique, artistic touch to several seaside projects, including The Wildwood Collection, which consists of a series of artworks, clothing and home goods. The Wildwood Collection was inspired by the Wildwood stories Macomber has been told over the years and has been described as an expression and homage to our quaint community. The collection will eventually include prints, posters, mugs, clothing and housewares at all three of the Morey’s Piers shops, including the new KONG & Co. at Surfside Pier and the [artBOX] gallery shop. It’s an artistic way of bringing a bit of summer by
the sea home!
An Eventful Beach Move For more than a decade, the Wildwood beach has graciously played host to local events. Due to a lessened threat of flooding, lower permit fees and an accommodating government, the spring and fall Beach Jam will be relocated to the North Wildwood beaches between 18th and 22nd streets. All three of Morey’s Piers will remain open for both events. The remainder beach events, including Beach Blast soccer, will still be held on the beach in Wildwood. Gentlemen Race The Oilers Car Club presented its Race of Gentlemen, relocated from North Jersey to our grand beach after Hurricane Sandy, on Oct. 3rd to the 5th, 2014. The event featured a collection of cars and motorcycles from the 1920s and ‘30s battling it out on the beach. The Friday night pre-party was reminiscent of a scene right out of “American Graffiti!” New Wildwood event for JEEPs The New Jersey Jeep Association was formed to allow Jeep owners to get together and truly experience Jeep ownership in a fun, family atmosphere. This new event will be held on the beach here in Wildwood, NJ June 19-21st, Father’s Day weekend 2015! That’s right in Wildwood, NJ!!! The event was held before in Ocean City, however they needed more space, so Wildwood wins out again because of our big beautiful beaches. This could only mean one thing! Bigger beaches means more Jeeps! The event kicks off on Friday night at Fox Park.

Bidding for Ice Cream In January, Wildwood received two bids for a beach ice cream concession, which will considerably enhance the city’s earnings from 15 individual licenses. The city had 15 annual vendor permits to distribute to qualified military veterans or exempt firemen. Putting beach ice cream sales out to bid will enable the city to achieve over $100,000 in 2015 and over $300,000 during a three-year contract. The highest bid was from Popsy Pop, LLC. at $324,224 for three years. Continues on next page . .

Celebrating America’s Favorite Youthful Pastimes The Wildwoods have proudly become a Mecca for Youth Sports during the fall and winter months, with sports
continuing into 2015 making for a jam-packed calendar of wrestling, soccer, gymnastics and more. The National Cheer Tech Cheerleading Competition, Boardwalk Basketball Classic and youth wrestling duals are just a few of the events that keep the Wildwoods Convention Center just as busy during the winter months as they are in the summer. Among the many events, ‘Battle at the Boards’ Basketball Tournament, presented by Crest Saving Bank, was held on December 23rd. In addition, the United States Futsal Federation hosted the Northeast Futsal Regional Championship February 14-16 in the Wildwoods Convention Center’s Oceanfront Arena. Spring and summer events include the Special Olympics NJ Spring Sports Festival Basketball Finals and the Dance Xplosion Dance Competition. Major League Lower Cape May Regional High School graduate Matt Szczur was promoted to the Chicago Cubs after playing the current season for their triple-A-affiliate in Iowa City. In recent years Szczur, 25, became the third former Cape-Atlantic League player to reach the majors, following Mike Trout (Millville) and Darren Ford (Vineland). Matt made headlines in 2010 when he donated peripheral blood cells to a then 19-month old leukemia patient. Proving that he’s also a romantic, Matt turned a November 2013 trip to New York even more memorable for his girlfriend, Natalie Cooper, a true Broadway lover. In town to see her grandmother’s favorite Broadway show, “Chicago: The Musical,” Matt proposed to a shocked Natalie in the presence of cast members before the show started. The couple married in November 2014 in Philadelphia.

State-of-the-Art Library Time Construction on the 10,000-squarefoot Wildwood Crest branch of the Cape May County Library is expected to be completed by the arrival of tourist season. The new state-of-the-art, glass-enclosed library, on the site of the former Hereford Masonic Lodge on Atlantic Ave. between Columbine & Wisteria, will have an enlarged children’s area, two study rooms, a large and small meeting room, outside deck, enclosed reading area, a larger room for all library materials and free WiFi. One block away on Ocean Avenue resides the small memorial library (complete with comfortable lounge chairs and an ocean view).
Vision 2015 a Dream? Approximately five years ago, Wildwood tourism and business officials proposed their Vision 2015 plan, a calculated road map that identified virtually 50 development projects meant to entice new business and tourism to town, a dream blunted by funding realities. Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. explained the city primarily needs to draw new businesses to the downtown to back the projects outlined in Vision 2015 as the city worked on offering a tax abatement program to encourage new businesses. Patrick Rosenello, mayor of North Wildwood and executive director of the Downtown Wildwood Business Improvement District (WBID) said all of the plan’s major projects are progressing in some way with the exception of the “Destination Station” parking facility. The city planned to sell the Pacific Avenue parking lot intended as the site of the project, and Rosenello said the WBID did not plan to make an offer. He explained the ultimate goal of the 2015 plan wasn’t just to offer a timeline for major development projects, but rather an agreement for businesses, tourism officials and the city to work toward.
One project intended for the New Year is the connector at Cedar Avenue from the city’s Boardwalk to the downtown, with the state Department of Community Affairs granting Wildwood $400,000 to reconstruct ramps along the boardwalk to make them amenable with the Americans with Disabilities Act. City officials said a fraction of the grant would be used to fund the first phase of the Boardwalk Gateway Connector. One of the only projects to be accomplished in the 2015 plan was the Boardwalk and bike path connector at Cresse Avenue, which was partially funded with money from Wildwood Crest’s UEZ program. Turning Back Time on Pacific Ave. In conjunction with the Wildwood Business Improvement District’s façade enhancement initiative in Downtown Wildwood, the WBID has given the Wildwood Historical Society the funding needed to install an antique clock in front of the George F. Boyer Historical Museum in Downtown Wildwood. The “Center City Plaza” clock once stood at the corner of Atlantic and Oak Aves., in front of the Casino Arcade. The clock was in storage for 25 years until A.B.S. Sign Co. donated their services to bring it back to working order. It is expected that the refurbishment and installation will be completed just in time for everyone to see as they visit Pacific Avenue this summer! Save the Date! The Postcard & Antique Show at the museum is Saturday, June 13th.

Working toward a Safer Environment The residents of Marina Bay
Towers, the senior citizens complex located on New York Avenue in North Wildwood, have endured poor living conditions and endless legal trouble in their effort to make their residence a cleaner, safer environment. Mayor Patrick Rosenello stated the complex’s great potential has sadly never been reached due to its complicated legal ownership. Rosenello maintained the city’s primary concern was for the residents. Promises to the city as well as to the residents, he explained, hadn’t been reached.
Changes ahead for Wildwood Crest Beaches? In an effort to
combat storm damage, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planned to build a 16-foot high dune from the 2nd Avenue jetty in North Wildwood south to Raleigh Avenue in the Diamond Beach section of Lower Township. The Borough Commission, however, remained concerned more dunes would block ocean views and public beach access. The Crest beaches, Commissioner Don Cabrera explained, are different from many beach communities due to the beaches’ and dunes’ size. The dune system could block out their groundlevel winding bike and walking path along with public-access breaks in the dunes, which give visitors broad beach and ocean views, while offering less handicap beach access. With the borough and the Army Corps in discussion, the construction was cautiously scheduled for 2017, awaiting approvals and congressional funding. A Joint Venture Due to erosion from winter storms, the beach entrances from 3rd through 6th Aves. in North Wildwood were blocked off. A joint project was planned with Wildwood to temporarily repair the problem while saving
the community hundreds of thousands of dollars. While the Wildwood beaches have too much sand, North Wildwood doesn’t have enough. Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano and Wildwood’s Public Works Department were pleased the towns could work together to resolve the problem. North Wildwood is paying for the undertaking through its capital fund. The joint project, which hopes to be completed by mid-May by city workers, involves moving 75,000 cubic yards of sand. While a larger beach replenishment project by the Army Corps of Engineers for all of Five Mile Beach, including the reconstruction of the North Wildwood beach, is being planned, it will not get started until 2017.
Wildwood Weather Report Weather can often be erratic in our coastal town, as the media (and knowledgeable locals) attempt to predict its next course of action. After a typically hot summer, autumn was breezy and beautiful, ultimately making way for those inevitable clouds that rolled in to announce winter’s arrival. A Noreastern greeted an otherwise fair weathered fall season the second week of November when an extreme cold front moved in, making locals feel as though winter had arrived five weeks too early. The weather cooperated for the traditional Halloween and Trunk or Treat as families on Olde NJ Ave & at Crest Pier decorated the backs of their vehicles and dressed up in creative costumes, forming an informal block party. The weather fell just below the snow belt on November 26th, the day before Thanksgiving and the busiest travel day of the year. A Noreastern caused bad beach erosion in North Wildwood on December 8th and 9th. We discovered nature is not always family-friendly when that mighty ocean rolled away one of our favorite beaches in just one day! Light snow (approximately 1”) fell on January 14th, making for a pretty winter scene with no shoveling necessary.

“ W ildwood - a new season“ Two inches of snow fell on January 21st in the afternoon just in time for making the perfect, afterschool snowman. Heavy rain pounded the coast on January 26 th, leading the way to what the media predicted would be the Storm of the Century. Only Not! After stocking up on bread and milk, we awoke to one inch of snow, quickly turning Storm Juno into the “Juno Blizzard Bust.” Storm Neptune arrived just in time for Valentine’s Day and President’s Weekend, not with flowers and chocolate but with 40 mph winds, an inch of snow Saturday night and two inches on Monday with temperatures in the single digits throughout the long weekend. The February 21st winter storm tragically resulted in a fatal car crash on the North Wildwood bridge. Before the month ended, over six inches of snow fell on February 26th, adding more (unasked for) winter white to the scenery. March most definitely came in like a lion on its first day, as Sunday morning snow turned into an icy Sunday evening, leaving locals wondering, ‘will it go out like a lamb’? (unlike the never-ending winter of 2014). March 5th began with heavy rain and ended with 7” of heavy snow, as the winter of 2015 lingered on. . . more March Madness continued as the first day of Spring (20th) brought a wintery mix of snow & rain all day, and then snow flurries on March 28th. With wind chills in the teens on the morning of the 29th, it was safe to say that March came in and went out like a lion. Easter came early on April 5th, bringing glorious weekend weather in time for opening day on Morey’s Piers and many boardwalk shops. The beautiful weekend weather pattern continued through the month of April, until winter returned to make its final appearance on the last weekend of the month bringing frost warnings and freezing temps. {Hopefully, the sun is shining warm upon your face as you sit enjoying this long, anticipated issue of The Sun. }

Just in time for Valentine’s Day and President’s Weekend, Sam’s Pizza opened on February 13th, welcoming crowds in from the light snow and 40 mph winds (making for what felt like 2 degree weather). The opening of Sam’s has become an annual community event and an indication that spring can’t be far behind. Storm Neptune, however, had other ideas, sending cold boardwalk strollers running to get their first hot slice of the year!

The Travelers have Spoken The Wildwoods were named the overall U.S. winner in the Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice ‘Destinations on the Rise’ and Conde Nast Traveler’s list of 10 Best US Destinations for Hotel Deals this Summer for 2015. John Siciliano, executive director for the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority, spoke of the tremendous honor the recognition has created as well as the GWTIDA’s dedication to making the Wildwoods a popular family vacation spot. Siciliano is expecting another good season for the Wildwoods and said, “Every time there was a snowstorm, the phones would start ringing. If it was a cold winter day, they’d start thinking of those summer days on the beach.”

Country finds a Home in Wildwood The Anglesea Irish Society will present “Boots at the Beach,” Southern New Jersey’s largest country music festival, on the beaches of North Wildwood Friday, September 18 to Saturday, September 19. Country
bands and dj’s will be appearing in every bar in the North Wildwood entertainment district. The district is proud to be the first home to Boots at the Beach Country Music Festival. The event promises to feature many of the East Coast’s biggest up-andcoming country music artists. The family-friendly festival will also offer specialty foods and drinks, vendors and of course, live country music on an outdoor stage.
TIME TOGETHER
Conclusion Beach lover and author Sandy Gingras once said, “At the beach, life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour, but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun.” Following the belief that beach (and by extension, boardwalk) time cures all ill moods, we hear at The SUN plan on spending our mindful moments wisely. What a summer we have before us! There’s the Downtown Wildwood Farmer’s Market to get us healthy, Yoga on the Beach with Itswell to help us get our Zen, and the North Wildwood Italian-American Festival to keep us well fed! We can always count on an island-wide lineup of Concerts under the Stars, keeping a series of songs in our hearts all summer long, the Boardwalk Craft Shows making us the most creative shoppers and, of course, the Wildwood Talent Showcase displaying our greatest gifts. Christmas in July with Santa Clause is naturally on our Summer Wish Lists as well as a starry visit with the always-entertaining Harlem Globetrotters. We plan on working up an appetite satisfied by some fine boardwalk dining, for traveling by bike and by tram car, enjoying some family-friendly and thrill-ride hoping, one-of-a-kind shopping and, of course, for catching the most glorious Friday nights fireworks display. We intend to take copious notes and while we can’t wait to share our Summer of 2015 stories with you, our fellow shore lovers and SUN friends, we look forward to talking about your summer adventure tales when we meet again between the pages and by the sea. Meg the Movie Buff Goes to Hollywood 2015 LATE SPRING MOVIE GUIDE
by Meg Corcoran
Ready for a soothing Pitch Perfect 2 start the melodious Summer of 2015?
During our clever characters’ search for a utopian Tomorrowland (where an endless summer exists), they follow the sandy path leading to the starry-eyed town of Wildwood, NJ, where soft sunlight, as opposed to a harsh spotlight, is waiting. No longer Mad Max: (detours off) Fury Road to the serene Avenue of the Stars to pay homage to the greats that came before him. The always-great Avengers: Age of Ultron feel ageless and free along the coast, magically finding only heavenly moments within the Insidious: Chapter 3. Happily settling into the most heavenly time of year, our talented crew can’t wait to discover what each new day will bring, knowing it will be filled with faint tan lines and appealing storylines throughout the most sizzling of seasons! Before checking out their sizzling bigscreen storylines at your neighborhood movie theater, please check your local listings for release date changes… Avengers: Age of Ultron (opens May 1 st) finds Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) working on a peacekeeping plan gone wrong, sending the Avengers on a mission to thwart the villainous Ultron (voice of James Spader) by transporting him on a never-ending Raging Waters experience. Possessing the Pitch Perfect 2 (opens May 15th) open the upcoming Concert under the Stars Series, the collegiate a cappella group the Barden Bellas (including Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson) hope to become the first American team to win an international competition. Mad Max: (Tom Hardy, travels down) Fury Road (opens May 15th), clearly far removed from serene, scenic Ocean Avenue, during an apocalypse, where he finds humanity devastated on a desolate desert environment. A strangely-connected curious teen (Britt Robertson) and a scientific inventor (George Clooney) find inspiration while visiting the artBOX as they search for an imaginative Tomorrowland (opens May 22nd) that exists only in their shared memory.
A CIA analyst (Jason Statham) finds his courage on the Skyscraper and becomes a questionable Spy (opens May 22 nd) when he goes undercover to prevent an international catastrophe. After taking on the tough town of Hollywood, film star Vince Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his Entourage (opens June 5th, including Jeremy Piven and Kevin Connolly) take to the sandy streets of Wildwood in search of a little anonymity and a lot of sun and surf. A thrilling beach read is contained within the Insidious: Chapter 3 (opens June 5th) that reveals how a gifted psychic (Lin Shaye) makes contact with the dead and makes friends with the living while telling the fortunes of those boarding the Ghost Ship. The carousel and mini teacups would be out of place at the dinosaur theme park Jurassic World (opens June 12th), in a state of decline until a new, less familyfriendly attraction peaks visitors’ interest before things go horribly wrong. Starring Chris Pratt and Judy Greer. The emotions (including the voices of Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling) take over Inside Out (opens June 19th) of the mind of a child (Kaitlyn Van Dyke). If only they would guide her to the pure joy found beneath colorful Fireworks on the Beach. Feeling Zen after Yoga on the Beach, Ted (2) (voice of Seth MacFarlane, opens June 26th) is determined to prove he’s a person in the eyes of the law so he and his new wife (Jessica Barth) can have a baby. John (Mark Wahlberg) is onboard as his supportive friend and potential biological father. With the sun asleep and the stars aligning, our always-hot Wildwood Entourage is sent to Spy on the Hollywood talent clearly having the coolest experience on the boardwalk, where Ted 2 is enjoying an imaginative encounter with the stuffed animals and bathing beauties on the scene. They all soon realize a Jurassic World can’t compare to our wonderful way of life. Feeling nothing but calm and carefree Inside Out, our stars all agree: a story filled with long sunny days and leisurely starry nights was meant to be told all season long by the sea….

LAST STOP!
WILDWOOD-BY-THE-SEA
W
hen you rode the Greyhound Bus just short of that point on the Island where the very edge of the land ran out and the Atlantic Ocean began, you knew you had arrived. To go any further your uniformed Driver would have to be intrepid enough to steer the bus onto the beach and into the breaking waves…Some of the buses back in the 60’s had manual sliding windows. You could click and yank them open as the Big Grey Dog down-shifted through Oak and Ocean Avenues. Within seconds a heady mixture of diesel fumes, Boardwalk aromas and briny cool breezes would waft through the stale interior. When this aromatic tide rose up to their nostrils your fellow travelers came awake from naps, daydreams and sci-fi paperbacks. And yes indeed—you had reached the end of the line at the golden neon heart of Seashore Summer. Almost everyone from Philadelphia rode the “Wildwood Bus.” Some of them rode it routinely; others only once. All of them recall it with a smile and have a story up their sleeves. Of course I have several of my own but first… Without dates or details the American Bus looms large in the culture and imagination of the 20th American Century. In a roughly chronological arc the bus has been used to transport school children, chain gangs, church-folks and migrant workers from fairly early on. Public urban service and long-haul transportation surely got in on the act at the ground floor as well. In the segregated South of the 1950’s Rosa Parks sat, against the law, in the wrong seat and made history. Not much later small fleets of buses carried Civil Rights Workers (Freedom Riders) through the same enemy terrain. Some of them were bombed and burned. Then there was the Novelist Ken Kesey (One Flew Over) some 3,000 miles West with a transformed 1939 Harvester bus named “Further”. It was Day-Glow swirls and outfitted with a very elaborate sound system for music and other au-

dio projections. This bus transported millions of people (mostly young) into an entirely new realm called Psychedelia. The American Bus drives through our books, plays, movies and television like a prop on wheels. There’s Ralph Kramden in The Honeymooners and Marylin Monroe in Bus Stop. With great pathos Jon Voight rides into and out of (with Dustin Hoffman) Midnight Cowboy. In literature Jack Kerouc rides the Hound in On the Road as much as he Hitchhikes…But the Bus from Philadelphia to Wildwood, New Jersey? That had drama, romance, high and low comedy and everything in between. Just like time, the younger you were, the bigger the bus seemed. As a boy or young teen it felt like a big metallic boat or spaceship of the 50s. And just like the waves, the riders were a mixedbag but all of one thing at the same time: young couples, seniors, teenagers, week-end work-adaddies, my Aunt, your Uncle, toddlers/infants, crusty drunks, old nuns and servicemen home from Viet-Nam. Some ate lunch-roll sandwiches out of wax paper. Others sipped coffee (or Old Hickory) from a thermos. There was always one guy with a fishing rod and tackle-box followed by another with a guitar or saxophone case. At least one “Moon-Doggie” would carry on a surfboard but no luggage. Teenage girls would move to the “Big Seat” in the back with armfuls of carry-ons and snacks. But their essential piece was the little black-handled box full of 45 records and turntable that would transform a Memorial Day Efficiency into a warm-up for the Starlight Ballroom.
I do not know if the “Wildwood Bus” still leaves from Broad and Snyder. I am also unsure about who rides the bus these days. I do know that its last stop is no longer around Oak and the Boardwalk. But when all of this was real, you started to grind-out down Broad Street in the lowest gears where you left behind open fire plugs, block parties, street games—the whole July hot asphalt dream…On the Walt Whitman the whole city rose up behind you and the Delaware River flowed through it and down to the Bay. Then came the Black Horse Pike with its small towns and produce stands. You might snake your way through the “Deer Woods” on their “Backroads…” No cell phones, I-Pads, Notebooks, Nooks or Lap-Tops… Maybe a crackling transistor radio ballgame…But you might strike-up an easy conversation with the fellow-traveler beside you or across the aisle… Better yet, you could, as recommended, Leave the Driving to Us, gaze out the window with a quiet boy’s secret sense of wonder and joy and take it all in.

Give the Gift of Summer:
To the Next Generation by Cheri L. Herlinger

RENOVATION IN PROGRESS
Photos & Postcards Courtesy of the Wildwood Historic Museum, Woody Garrison & Children’s Fresh Air Home
You may have noticed a lot of activity at the corner of 11th & Surf Ave. in North Wildwood over the past few months. In January, the Children’s Fresh Air Home (CFAH) kicked-off the first phase of a long-planned renovation effort to restore its century-old home. Since 1923, the Home has opened its doors to more than 20,000 children in need throughout the New Jersey and Philadelphia region. The summer respite is a Jersey-Shore mainstay for those who would otherwise never have a chance to experience the joy and beauty of the sun, sand, and sea – truly a gift that every child deserves. A few years ago, CFAH temporarily closed its doors to focus on a costly, but urgent, renovation to the exterior and interior of the Home. And in 2014, CFAH launched a major fundraising initiative - the Capital Campaign – to fund a massive, $1.2 million construction project to restore and reopen the Home. Mayor Patrick Rosenello of North Wildwood has recognized and supported CFAH’s mission through his role as Honorary Chairperson of the Capital Campaign Committee. His involvement, along with the continued dedication of CFAH’s working board, has positioned the home to take some critical steps in the renovation process, including the recent lifting of the home and the construction of a new foundation. Much of this work has been generously donated by local and regional busi-
nesses, including Ross Denham Construction of Cape May and Paul Marconi and U.C.I., a private construction company based in Lansdowne, PA. This summer, CFAH will continue to host its successful interim program, “If Just for a Day”, enabling hundreds of young people from regional organizations to experience a fun, carefree day at the beach in North Wildwood. From community events to raffles to summer day trips, CFAH is working tirelessly to ensure that its mission continues – now and in the future. Over the next several months, the organizations plans to participate in several campaign fundraisers throughout the region. How You Can Help CFAH has presented each of us with a great opportunity – the ability to give back for all of our treasured memories at the Jersey Shore over the years. Whether you attend an event, buy a raffle ticket, volunteer your time or resources, or make a donation, you can help give the next generation of CFAH recipients the unique gift of summer. CFAH heavily relies on the financial support of donors throughout the region as well as the kind support of many local businesses and organizations to continue its mission. Donations can be made by mail to the Children’s Fresh Air Home at P.O. Box 413, Haddonfield, NJ 08033 or online at www.freshairhome.org

The
Chief

here was a time when a short statured man clad in a Hawaiian shirt was a fixture on the North Wildwood boardwalk. Most never knew he was the city’s chief of police keeping a watchful eye on the city he so much loved, and was also concerned for the safety and security of the valued vacationers to his city. He would always seem to be perched in the most obscure of locations, like a hidden beacon of hope if trouble would arrive. Twentyfifth street and the Boardwalk was one of those favorite places. There was a time when a large fight broke out and the police from many jurisdictions were called to aid helpless victims. It didn’t take long before the nefarious subjects turned their attention away from pummeling their victims toward the police. Dropping from that perch was “the Chief” who although short in stature could channel his experience and energy in the directions that seem to matter when all hope was lost. Lately the media is filled with stories about law-enforcement, some are positive, praising the dedication and bravery the men face each day, but there are many filled with negative comments. It is probably more a sign of the times or a revisit to a time in history when many of us, who are still around to remember, questioned the government because of what we perceived happening around us.
Unfortunately, the Chief died in 1997 from complications of an illness. His Police Inspector’s funeral drew thousands from across the country. A true testament to the legacy he left. What I am most pleased about was the impact he left on his family as it relates to duty and service. His son went on to be a “summer cop” for a few years, North Wildwood’s finest: Pictured with Chief Sittineri are his nephews and son-in-law, Ray Guidetti, Capt. Kevin Tolan, Rob Guidetti, Richard Sittineri and Mike Guidetti
The Chief is an example of one of those positive stories. He started as a seasonal officer during the summers of 1968 and 1969, he was then appointed full time in 1970. He loved policing and working with the people on this Island. He was fair to everyone, but more than upholding the law, he cared about North Wildwood, and he cared about those that lived here and those that visited. He seemed to work 24 hours a day, always carrying a radio and always leaving family gatherings to respond to calls for service or distress. It was this dedication to duty that resulted in many of his colleagues labeling him “a cop’s cop.” The Policeman’s Benevolent Association honored him in 1987 for that fact. His dedication to service promoted him to sergeant in 1976, Lieutenant in 1983, Captain in 1984 and then his appointment to Chief in 1987. During his service, which lasted nearly three decades, he had the honor of being recognized with numerous honor and achievement awards for his dedication to his men and the people of his town. He encouraged his personnel to excel at their jobs and many of them also went on to receive achievement awards. He strongly believed in the seasonal officer program and encouraged his family, extended family and many of their friends to enroll. They patrolled the streets and boardwalk for many summers during their college years. One thing that was certain was that
he embedded in those acolytes that worked for him a sense of duty and service to those they were sworn to protect. To this day, many of those former “summer cops” who are now spread out around the world still talk about those Wildwood Days and the experience they gained while working with or for The Chief. The Chief was also ahead of his time, ensuring that his cops developed relationships with many of the local businesses. One such business that stands out in my mind was and is still Sam’s Pizza. It is not just that the pizza was the best (sorry for the bias), but the Chief knew that entering North Wildwood by the boardwalk forced boardwalk patrons to pass 26th Street and Sam’s Pizza. For the vacationers, the sight of a “summer cop” standing among the crowd was reassurance of the family vacation spot. For the lawbreaker, it was a reminder that there would be consequences to unlawful actions. The local businesses, like Sam’s, became a part of that view of a safe and secure city. It was the Chief that created this atmosphere. Just a few years ago, the “summer cops” who once worked for the Chief had a little reunion. Many of the stories both true and exaggerated all surrounded the Chief in some shape or form. It was his connection with his people that underscored the claim by many that he was the “best Chief ever.” Before his career in law
His son-in-law is Captain on the North Wildwood force and his grandson is a patrolman in that same department. One of his nephews just retired from the Middle Township police department. One nephew is the Deputy Chief in Paramus, one is a Lieutenant Colonel in the state police, and another is a Federal Agent. There are times in the summer when I am on the busy Boardwalk and I catch a glimpse of a Hawaiian shirt in the distance among the many happy faces the Wildwoods bring. While I try hard to find the Chief, I know that his legacy is what has left the Boardwalk a place for people to enjoy. Thank you, Chief. **** My brother, Tony Sittineri, The Chief, served as a member of the Cape May County Training Commission while also serving two terms as president of the N.J. Police Benevolent Association, Local 59. He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the South Jersey Police Association, the State Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Italian American Polico Society and the League of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the late 1960’s Tony and his wife Mary moved full time to North Wildwood and raised their five children. Their family has since grown to include five spouses, sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. He loved his family and opened his home to anyone who needed his help in any way. He enjoyed caring for his backyard garden and many of the family meals included his homegrown vegetables.

A Little Bit of History at the History Musuem
Contributing to our town’s rich and diverse history, Mona Pluck and her husband owned the old Marmick Apartments located at 225-227 E. Bennett Ave. in Wildwood. Sadly, a fire destroyed those apartments, making room for the condos that would eventually take their space, but not their place in the minds of anyone who stayed there. Mona, a treasured employee at the Wildwood Historic Museum, moved back to Philadelphia in the fall of 2014, leaving a void for her co-workers, dear friends and neighbors. Her next-door neighbor, Diane Brannen especially misses visiting with the good-natured resident history buff. Anyone who’s visited the museum over the past few years would know Mona. She greeted everyone who came through their
doors with a warm, friendly smile; an accurate reflection of the kind of employee she was. A true Wildwood enthusiast, she loved assisting anyone in their search to learn more about its history, making her a much-valued part of our charming past…
Spring is here and summer is around the corner. This winter quite a few people in the Wildwoods have passed away (as you’ll read about a few of them in The Sun’s While You Were Away column.) Just a reminder- each day you are lucky enough to wake up and get out of bed, make sure you hug, kiss and talk to your spouse, kids, grandchildren and friends. The Museum is now open Monday through Saturday, 9AM to 2PM. Stop by and meet our new office manager, Costantino Spinosa. He has a background in Museum Studies, having recently worked in Italy. The Board feels he will be a big asset to the Museum. Please see the ad on this page for our annual Post Card, Antiques & Collectible Show & Open House. There will be a special speaker as well as refreshments. Please come out and support YOUR Museum. In October, the Cape Atlantic Paranormal Research Soc. returned to the Museum to do a QR code tour and to show the public their findings. About 110 people attended and it was quite interesting. For those of you who do not know, the Museum building was the former Ingersoll Funeral Parlor. It opened up circa 1906 and continued till the 1970’s. The Teen Paranormals are going to do another fact finding mission this summer. This winter we painted, rearranged and added some new pictures in some of the rooms. Stop by to see the Center City Clock which was in the back room for 20 some years. You will see it alongside our building. Thanks to the ABS Sign Co. who restored the clock. Also, special thanks go
out to WBID ~ the Pacific Avenue Special Improvement District, Mitchell Welding & Iron Works, E. Troiano Concrete for their financial support and Mrs. Dotty Gannon, all for donating the clock. Buy a Brick Program: This is an ongoing program that allows you to honor someone or a favorite memory, or just put your own name to be remembered. The engraved Bricks are displayed outside in front of the Museum. It’s another way to support your Museum. Leader Newspapers: We have books of them dating back to 1896. The Museum is in the process of having them digitized. Every ten years, twenty books cost about $4000. Anyone win the lottery? We need help with this project. I know that time flies by and everyone is busy, but there must be people who are retired or just want to help our organization. The Museum is in need of Board Members/ Volunteers. If the Museum is to grow and keep its doors open for years to come, as it has the past 25 years, then people must step up and help keep the rich history and fond memories of the Wildwoods alive. Do you know who Tuffy was and what he did? Did you ever see a coin operated gas meter? How did people cast their votes before 1960? Do you know where the Museum is? Just kidding. Stop in. You can always learn something new about the Wildwoods. Hope to see you soon!
