PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
N
ationwide 29% of the population, or 72 million people, live in a community association. There are approximately 358,000 community associations in the country. In Nevada, slightly more than 500,000 people live in more than 3,500 community associations. In total, these residents pay $928 million annually in assessments and other obligations to support their communities. (An average of about $160 per month.) Eighty-nine percent of association residents say their association’s rules protect and enhance their property values. Long-time homeowners in Sun City Summerlin are usually familiar with how an HOA operates. Often new homeowners in Sun City Summerlin are experiencing HOA life for the first time. While it is a requirement that all governing documents be provided to a new buyer at the time of closing, it is often just part of a large pile of paperwork received at that time. So, important information is easily overlooked, or put aside, in the process of buying the new home. The result is that homeowners (new or otherwise) may not be fully aware of the requirements of living in a managed community. There are architectural restrictions, rules and regulations for using facilities, age restrictions, etc. For a new owner, or even some long-time owners, it can seem a bit daunting or controlling. But that is a part of buying and living in an Association. You acknowledge at the time of purchase that you understand and will abide by all the HOA governance. Earlier this year, the Board approved updates and revisions to both the Development Standards and the Rules & Regulations. Hopefully all residents take the time to read through these documents and understand what they require. They provide the structure that we all live here under. They protect property values. And they protect the individual’s rights, while also enforcing a certain level of conduct and policy. If you have questions, always refer to the current official documents. If you need further clarification, contact an appropriate department staff member. All contact information can be found in the Link magazine. Sometimes a homeowner will simply ask another resident what the rule or requirement might be. Frankly, that is a poor source, as the response may be incorrect or outdated. Community associations may battle with a stigma and negative reputation that is often undeserved. By understanding how an HOA operates, homeowners can be supportive of the entire community. And that benefits us all. Everyone should be committed to keeping Sun City John Berthelsen, Summerlin a desirable place to live and enjoy life. President Please continue to let us know your questions, conSun City Summerlin Board of Directors cerns, and thoughts about our community. 4 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

The Leader In Us
are the pilot.”
By Alan G. Spector / Link
I have always thought that there is a leader in every person. Some have the title, some are viewed as leaders by others, and many lead quietly and are mostly unrecognized. Some folks insist they have no power, while others believe they have all the power and take all the control they can gather from others. True leadership is earned and not demanded... conferred and not commandeered.
We live in complicated and sometimes very troubled times. It seems more difficult each year to stay focused on the positive, healthy, and growthful things in our lives... those things that make life worth living, allow us to be the best we can be, and that which helps us contribute to a better world for all. We work to find ways to deal with the bumps in our roads and to end up being better for the efforts. We can turn adversity into opportunity and aching into growth. We often cannot control what happens in our lives but we can control how we react to them. We are in control of our behavior and our attitude. We can be “in our own power”. So, there is a leader in each of us. It is up to us to get in touch with our “leader” qualities and harness them... for our good and for the good of the universe. Here are some good thoughts for consideration... now, the challenge is to free the “leader” in each of us and to be open to the challenge. Good luck to us all on our life’s mission. Here are some leadership ideas that can bring us “into our power” and help us become the best person we can be (and the happiest as well!). “Be careful who you pretend to be – you might forget who you really are.” “You can be anything and everything... it all begins with starting.” “You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” “Do not allow people to dim your shine because they are

LET’S GET MUSICAL!
Picking A Note Out Of The Air!
As one of Sun City Summerlin Chartered Clubs, the Musicmakers enjoy the business of making music each and every week. The club has evolved from only singers to both a choral group and a crew of instrumentalists. They all have the Music Studio in the Pinnacle rocking on Mondays and Wednesdays. There are guitars, keyboards, flute, saxophone, ukuleles, and of course, drums. Throw in whatever other instruments these folks put together for the “jam” sessions, then add in a few vocals and you have a spirited time each session. The singers are always looking toward their next performance. They work with their musical director, a quality profes-
sional from the Las Vegas entertainment community. Starbright Theatre is the place to be as the group brings the stage alive with their special mix of talented voices and their passion to share all kinds of music with the audience. Michael Dubay-Director, and keyboardist extraordinaire, spearheads the energetic programs for the Musicmakers. There is always a chance to sing along and have a great time. The folks in Sun City Summerlin have the amazing opportunity to join any number of chartered clubs. If they have a special hobby, there is probably a club to help them along. Sun City Summerlin Community Association Inc., backs these groups with facilities and staff support, but each club is organized by the members within a specific framework. Musicmakers have a comfortable rehearsal studio, and a beautiful piano. There is a portable sound system, a few microphones with stands and a light, bright environment. For performances, the stage technicians are two of our favorite people; they combine lights and sound in the Starbright Theatre to the delight of performers and audiences alike. The professional riser system has the singers in view of every corner of the comfortable seating area. If you are a “singing in the shower” type or a seasoned performer, keep the Musicmakers in mind. It could be the perfect place to finally get on stage and show off your talent! Darlene Vaughan, President, Musicmakers
clubs, community centers, and one time at the Suncoast Casino. Our present Director, George Pucine and Accompanist Tim Cooper, have challenged us to higher levels of performance each season. George selects a theme and researches all music genres for the correct music that fits the chosen theme. He then carefully arranges the music to appropriately fit the ranges and talents of the Silvertones’ Chorus, always advancing the envelope a few degrees. We have been fortunate to enlist as our accompanist The Sun City Summerlin Silvertones acclaimed composer and music producer Timothy Cooper (MM December 2023, Silvertones should be celebrating their 66th sea- ’77). What was originally a graduate school of military studies with 200 students has grown into a university system of five institutions serving more than 100,000 students across the globe. At its annual commencement ceremony this past June in D.C., the system awarded 14,000 degrees from associate thru doctorate. Jim served the institution for 13 years as its Chief Operating Officer before retiring and staying on the Board of Trustees for four more years. In his free time, Jim and his wife Candy enjoy walking, biking, swimming, and traveling. Jim also plays golf with some of the Softball Club members once a week. He and Candy are blessed with seven children and 19 grandchildren! Jim and Candy are often in the air and on the road visiting family during holidays and special events. In May and June of next year, they will experience three high school and two college graduations. Jim has written articles for his small hometown newspaper, The Ivanhoe Times (town population of 558). Both articles were travel related covering separate visits to Poland and Germany. The article about his visit to Poland was written for the predominately Polish descendants of Jim’s hometown. As for the article about Germany, it was written to honor hometown WWII Veterans and their families. In that article, Jim traced Candy’s father’s deployment from Omaha Beach through France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge. Jim is always on the lookout for an interesting story for the LINK magazine. He hopes that readers enjoy his articles. Thank you, Jim!

James Herhusky Covering Special Interest Stories In Sun City Summerlin
By Gail Abrams / Link To date, Jim Herhusky, a resident of Sun City Summerlin since 2008, has written two wonderful articles for the LINK magazine: “Toy Story” in June 2023 and “Diamond Girls” in September 2023. And, he is just getting started! Jim is not a professional writer, but he has a knack for finding special interest stories in our community. For the “Toy Story” article, Jim told his neighbor, Norman Cohen: “This would be an interesting article for the LINK”. Jim offered to interview Norman and his wife, Vicki, and wrote the story. Jim’s photographer friend, Mike Warzocha took photos of the toy car collection. As for “The Diamond Girls” article, the first two ladies to join the Softball Club were Marcy Gazarek and Tara Belloni. After a successful season for both, Jim thought that their membership was “newsworthy” and they agreed to collaborate on an article for the LINK. Jim grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Concordia College. He began a career as a teacher/coach in Montana but was drafted into the Army during his second year. Jim entered the Army in 1970, attended Officer Candidate School, and ended up staying for 25 years. When Jim retired from the Army, he returned to education, joining a newly established online university in the D.C. area. Sun City Summerlin Fitness Year in Review 2023: Changes in 2024!
It was a busy year with 33 health education seminars, 3 healthy cooking demos, the 30th Annual Health Fair, 2nd Annual Balance and Memory Screening, National Senior Health & Fitness Day, and 2 community 5K/1mile walk/runs. The Fitness Department continues to bring you cutting-edge information from the healthcare system in the valley and seeks to invite professionals to share their education with the community on a variety of fitness and health-related topics. The International Council on Active Aging is an excellent resource that we use to get information on trends in active aging communities as well as topics and ideas that are pertinent to the community of Sun City Summerlin. Active Aging is continuing to grow as a field of research and study. The Board of Directors approved in July 2023 a contract with gym consultant, Heather Doane from Advanced Exercise to look at the existing fitness center spaces and to provide layout, design, suggestions to better utilize the smaller spaces, create community engagement, connection, and to suggest trends that are being seen in upcoming 55+ communities across the country. Change is necessary to stay competitive with the offerings here and to stay open to improvements that can affect the lives of residents who have a wide range of needs and wants for their fitness and wellness experience. In 2024, during the budget season, suggestions will be made to upgrade the 4 fitness centers. As stated by a fitness committee member in one of the Fitness Committee meetings, this is a very exciting time to be living in Sun City Summerlin. A few quotes to take us into 2024 on change and how beneficial it can be: “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." - George Bernard Shaw “You only fail when you stop trying.” - Thomas Edison “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change” Albert Einstein “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” Winston Churchill “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new” - Socrates “There is nothing permanent except change.” - Heraclitus “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward” - Martin Luther King Jr. 3 6 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

Wednesday, December 6, at 3 p.m. · Sun Shadows Take a break from the holiday hustle & bustle to join Fitness Instructor, Amy for a de-stressing and relaxing hour! While Amy guides you into a deeply meditative state with Yoga Nidra (guided relaxation), you’ll be enveloped in the resonant sound waves produced by various acoustic instruments including quartz crystal singing bowls, a gong, and chimes. Expect to lay down to fully relax into stillness (no chairs). Ambient tones can gently activate the parasympathetic nervous system - enabling deep rest of the mind and body. The sound frequencies and guiding words can signal your brain to calm in the kind of deep meditative state that benefits the immune system and digestive system, lowers blood pressure, and encourages healing, pain relief, tranquility, and focus. Many report sleep benefits, invigoration, and stress relief. Minimum donation of $5. Please bring yoga mats, blankets, pillow, and eye pillow or light towel to cover the eyes are highly encouraged for optimal warmth, extra cushion, relaxation, and comfort while lying down. Wear comfortable clothing to keep warm and cozy. Plan to arrive 10-15 min before starting time to get settled. No late entry due to the meditative nature of the class. Limited tickets will be available beginning December 1st with Social Monitors at Desert Vista, Mountain Shadows and Pinnacle.

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Back Yard Courtesy
In November, the Community Standards Office and the Architectural Review Committee began an expanded procedure to identify and report Development Standards’ violations that are most visible from the street. That will include front and side yards. The focus will be on violations that are offensive to neighbors, may impact the value of homes in the area and, generally, will negatively affect curb appeal. While the focus will be on the most visible violations, we are well aware that many back yards have become overgrown, accumulated trash, and have become the resting places of seldom-used equipment or storage items. Not being “visible from the street” is a worn-out rationalization for not “taking care of business”. In fact, there is hardly a lot in Sun City Summerlin that is not visible from one or more neighboring properties, or common area, which may be all the more troubling. Someone who occasionally drives by an unsightly front yard may overlook it because he/she doesn’t have to deal with it directly, but a next-door neighbor who must
“view the mess” in a neighbor’s back or side yard every day, is yet another matter. Keeping back yards in good condition is not only a courtesy to neighbors who are forced to look at it every day, but it is an enforceable part of the governing documents that all have agreed to observe. Time has proven that many residents do not wish to “rat” on their neighbors. That is an understandable human trait, but it doesn’t solve the problem of a messy back yard that may also have become a haven for a few unwanted critters. So, while we will concentrate on the most obvious, we don’t believe that back yards should go unnoticed. If you, as a responsible owner, are faced with unpleasantries on a neighboring property, let us know! We will investigate and document the infraction and treat it accordingly. Importantly, good “rats” are never identified. Back yards deserve better and, some would say, it starts Barbara Davidson, Director, Community Standards with you!

We Are Truly “All in This Together.” Happy Holidays! “If Love is universal, no one can be left out.” Deepak Chopra I started to think about the different faiths, and I wondered if there was something we all had in common. Was there a shared belief? I mean, we all follow the belief that there is something greater than ourselves, but was there a common thread that could bring us all together? Curious to see if I could link any of the religions together with a common belief, I did some research. Did you know that between October and January in today’s world we have 15 religious holidays that are observed? I did not! Many of these religious days are observed by Christians, but here are some you may not be aware of: September 26 - 27: Mawlid al-Nabi — Islam. This is an Islamic holiday that honors the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, who founded Islam. Shia and Sunni believers will celebrate on separate days by reading the prophet’s teachings, according to Interfaith Calendar. December 3 – December 24: Advent Fast begins — Orthodox Christian. The fasting starts midway through the month with only two weeks until Christmas. The holiday is celebrated by believers lighting Advent candles, hanging wreaths, and attending Church ceremonies, according to Interfaith Calendar. December 6: Saint Nicholas Day — Christian. This holiday honors the birth of Saint Nicholas, the saint who serves as a role model for gift-giving and is commonly known as Santa Claus, according to Interfaith Calendar. December 7 Sundown – December 15: Hanukkah — Judaism. This is the Holiday of the eight-day Jewish festival of lights, which celebrates the Maccabean revolt in Egypt. Eight candles are lit on the menorah to honor the miracle of the oil lasting 8 days. December. 8: Immaculate Conception — Catholic. In the lead-up to Jesus’ birthday celebration on Christmas, Catholics celebrate the day of Immaculate Conception to honor his mother Mary, who they say was preserved from original sin for her entire life. 4 8 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

December 8: Rohatsu (Bodhi Day) — Buddhist. This holiday celebrates the historical Buddha’s decision and vow to sit under the Bodhi tree until he reached spiritual enlightenment. It’s celebrated through meditation and is embraced similar to how Christians celebrate Christmas to honor Jesus Christ.

December 12: Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe — Catholic. This is a primarily Catholic holiday celebrated by Mexicans and Americans of Mexican descent that honors the reported appearance of the Virgin Mary in Mexico City, according to Interfaith Calendar.

December 16 to December 25: Posadas Navideñas — Christian. This is a primarily Hispanic Christian holiday that commends Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem to give birth to Jesus, according to Interfaith Calendar.

December 21: Solstice — Wicca/Pagan. Solstice is the point in the year "when the earth is most inclined away from the sun. It is the most southern or northern point depending on the hemisphere," according to Interfaith Calendar. Pagans and Wicca believers will celebrate that event through Yule, in which believers also honor “winter-born king”, symbolized by the rebirth of the sun, Interfaith Calendar explained. December 25: Christmas — Christian. Christmas is a primarily Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Many will attend church, have family parties, and exchange gifts, according to Interfaith Calendar. December 26: Zarathosht Diso (Death of Prophet Zarathustra) — Zoroastrian. Unlike many of the other holidays in the month, Zoroastrians honor the death of their prophet, Zarathustra, who founded Zoroastrianism, one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions. (Dates may vary and be celebrated on different days, depending on individual communities.) December 26 to January 1: - Kwanzaa (/ ˈkwɑːn.zə /) is an annual celebration of African American culture held, culminating in gift-giving and a feast of faith, called Karamu Ya Imani. It was created by Maulana Karenga and first celebrated in 1966.

December 28: Holy Innocents Day — Christian. Christians solemnly honor the deaths of children killed by King Herod, who was attempting to kill Jesus, according to Interfaith Calendar. December 31: Feast of the Holy Family — Catholic. Catholics use this day to honor Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, according to Interfaith Calendar. December 31: Watch Night — Christian. For Watch Night, Christians will thank God for the safety they received during the year, according to Interfaith Calendar. If everyone can observe their special Holiday with love in their hearts for themselves, their families, and friends, and those whom they don’t even know as best that one can, then peace, love and joy will come to all. I think there’s a song – “What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love” that may say it all. Happy Holidays, everyone! :) By Molly Sher/Link

“Update from Mitzi” Coyotes November 20, 2023 Dear Sun City Summerlin Homeowners and Residents, I originally sent this notice out on November 7, 2017 and June 14, 2022, to alert homeowners that Sun City Summerlin and surrounding communities are prone to have coyotes and what individuals should do to deter the coyotes away from their homes and to keep their pets safe. Many of you helped by taking “hazing coyotes” seriously and for numerous months sighting of coyotes around the homes have been rare. Recently, I have started getting reports of coyotes in front and back yards so I want to remind each of you of the action and precautions we all have to take. Remember, if you see a coyote near your home (or other homes) send me the address by email so we can go out and look for the den and remove the den. Removing the dens push the coyotes away from the homes without causing any harm to the coyote. It is always concerning when we see wildlife such as coyotes wandering our community. This is one of the most difficult and controversial concerns that communities across the United States face. Whether it is bears, snakes, raccoons, coyotes, elk, javelina, alligators, bobcats, or other animals, it seems that every community, no matter where they are, is faced with learning how to live with the creatures that inhabited the area before their homes were built. As each new development is built the wildlife that called the area home is forced to move out during the construction or adapt to the new conditions. Since there is no way to permanently eradicate the wildlife population around us, removing those who have come into the community only makes room for others to move in and results in mother nature increasing the frequency and size of the litters in those remaining. The best defense is learning to live with the wildlife in this area and develop the defensive skills that make wildlife, such as coyotes, afraid of people. To keep coyotes away from our homes and pets we need to be diligent. So many people tell me if they are golfing and see the coyotes, they just ignore them, however this just makes the coyotes not see people as a threat. Keep your distance and make noise to scare them away, blow a whistle (they hate the sharp sound) – the more we scare them away with noise the more likely they are to retreat to areas where people are scarce. Remove all sources of food from outside your home and put your garbage into cans with lids when it is out for pickup. HAZING COYOTES Hazing coyotes is a widespread practice used in communities to persuade coyotes who have adapted to living in housing communities to retreat into areas away from homes. If coyotes see humans as a food source and very little threat, they will move closer and closer to your homes. 5 0 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

Hazing is a method that Nevada Game and Fish and The Humane Society of the United States recommend. Sun City Summerlin residents practiced hazing in late 2017 and early 2018 and it resulted in the coyotes moving their dens and hunting grounds away from the homes and common areas, some reported that our residents did too good of a job because in 2018 the rabbit population exploded. Coyotes are naturally afraid of people, however, living in a community where people do not threaten them in anyway, they lose their fear. Following are the recommended hazing methods to re-establish their instinct to be reclusive and avoid people. 1. When you see a coyote wave your arms and yell, make yourself appear as big as possible by waving your arms above your head while you yell as loud as you can. 2. Carry a noise maker with you when you are out walking, in your golf cart or on your bike. Coyotes hate shrill, high pitched or loud noise. Use whistles, air horns, bells. Clang pans together or make a “shaker” can full of rocks, coins or marbles. When you see a coyote make noise! 3. Throw small rocks, sticks or tennis balls at them. Coyotes see these items as projectiles that could harm them and want to get away. 4. In your yard spray them with the hose, and/or carry a spray bottle or squirt gun with vinegar in it to spray them with. Once the vinegar gets on them, they are not able to get it off quickly and they associate the smell with the location and people and usually will not return to that area. Keep in mind, if a coyote has not been hazed before, it might not immediately run away, this does not mean hazing does not work, it means you need to continue the hazing, get louder, throw more rocks, etc. The coyote may retreat for a distance and then turn to look at you, if it does you need to start up the hazing again. 5. In your yard – remember coyotes can easily jump over a 6foot fence. a. Do not leave your pet unattended in your yard. Coyotes see your pet as food. b. Do not leave food out in your yard for your pet.
100
c. Pick up after your pet immediately. The smell from your pet’s waste tells the coyote there is prey in your yard.
95
d. If a coyote comes in your yard, bang pots together.
75
e. Keep a squirt gun (super soaker) filled with ammonia or vinegar and squirt the coyote. f. Make a lot of noise, they especially do not like the sound of pans being hit together or air horns.

SECURITY PATROL
Happy Holidays from the Sun City Summerlin Security Patrol
The members of Sun City Summerlin Security Patrol wish all our residents and their families a safe and joyful holiday season. We hope for good health and prosperity for all. Realize that meaningful holidays are about being special as well as sparkling. The holidays are a time to celebrate and appreciate time with family and friends. May you enjoy the last piece of cake or slice of pie. If you travel during the holidays, may the highways be clear and the airlines on time. (I hope that’s not too much wishful thinking.) Unfortunately, the holidays also bring out those wishing to take advantage of us. There is an increase in stolen mail and packages, scams, and Steve Douglass, Chief burglaries. Security Patrol
There are many ways to protect yourself and lessen the chances of being a victim during the holiday season. Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid dark areas as you run your errands. Lights, cameras, alarms, and landscape trimming can be beneficial to crime prevention around your home. When mailing cards, checks, or gift certificates use the Post Office or the blue Postal Service collection boxes. If expecting a delivery, have a plan to remove it from the front porch. Know the approximate time of mail delivery and remove it from the box as soon as possible. If you will be travelling during the holidays, remember to stop mail and newspaper service. The Security Patrol volunteers are on duty everyday including holidays. We patrol the streets of Sun City Summerlin at all hours, helping to deter crime in our community. Some of the things we do include: Ÿ Being the eyes and ears of Sun City Summerlin. Ÿ Observe and report suspicious activity. Ÿ Provide house checks when residents are away. Ÿ Remind residents to close garage doors at night. The Security Patrol dispatch center is open 24/7 to provide service and answer any questions. Our number is 702-254-2303.
Congratulations, Richard Becker: Recipient of the Outstanding Officer Award for 2023!

2023 Photo Show Local Talent on Display Nature’s splendor, Nevada’s beauty, scenes from all over the globe, animals large and small, birds, bees, flowers, and people - our Photography Club had talent on display at the 2023 Photo Show. In addition to the mounted photos, there was also a table showcasing some of the other ways to work with photographs: photo album ideas, mugs, coasters, note cards. Do you have old family photos not in the best shape? So do we, and we had some examples of before and after edited photos. It’s amazing what you can do with today’s photo editing tools. As always, we had a Best in Show contest. Cindy Lawrence’s photos won both 1st and 3rd place with Moraine Lake and Amazing Formation. Laszlo Heredy’s photo, Nature’s Delicate Balance, won 2nd place. Our photographers run the gamut, from cell phone photographers to those using the most advanced DSLR equipment. If you’re an amateur photographer, join us at one of our monthly meetings on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Our website has all the details: visit us at http://www.photography-scslv.club.
