You should have all received your ballot by now to elect three (3) Board members to serve our community for the next three (3) years. There are four (4) candidates running and multiple opportunities have been provided for you to meet the candidates and ask them questions. Please vote for the candidate or candidate(s) of your choice. Ballots must be received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, and will be opened and tabulated on Wednesday morning, February 26, 2025, at the Annual Meeting. If you have not received your ballot packet in the mail, please contact Jane Cox at the Executive Director’s Office at 702-966-1408.
As stated in the January President’s message, we still have not reached resolution in regard to the New Owner Reserve Assessment (NORA) amendment. At the brief Board meeting conducted December 20, 2024, a motion was made and approved unanimously to have the Board refer this matter to legal counsel to determine the best path forward. This has in fact occurred. As more information becomes available it will be shared with all of our owners.
The Administrative Staff is working hard preparing the budgets for their respective areas of responsibility for FY2026, which begins on July 1, 2025. These budgets will be reviewed in detail and modified as necessary in the latter half of March 2025. These hearings are open to all of our owners, so please plan to attend any session that you may have interest in.
So, let’s have another brief discussion about our amenities. Remember when you moved in, you agreed to pay the same annual assessment as all other owners in order to maintain all of our assets, equipment and amenities in excellent condition. By doing so, we are all making an investment in our community and driving property values. This is another reason that we are consistently ranked very high amongst age restricted active adult communities.
It is important that when we discuss our amenities that we must remember that ALL of them are being subsidized by us the owners. As such our amenities should be judged based on their performance against budget, not by some arbitrary comments referring to their “losses” and or “cost” to the community. As I stated above ALL of them are being subsidized.
It is hypocritical for some to make disparaging remarks in regard to some amenities and the subsidy that they receive, when in fact any amenity that they prefer to use is also being subsidized. We should all be proud to live in a community as highly regarded as ours. If you take the time to look at like communities, we in fact offer a far wider variety of amenities all maintained in excellent condition, with an annual assessment that is very reasonable.
While we will never please everyone, it is important to remain positive. It is nice to see our owners out and enjoying all that the community has to offer and realizing that it is all of us pitching in equally that makes all of this possible.

Vote Now for Sun City Board of Directors
As you read this article, you should have received your packet in the mail to vote for your choice of candidates running to serve on the SCSCAI Board of Directors. If you have not received your large, white envelope with the red marking “SCSCAI Election Materials Enclosed, Time Sensitive”, please contact the Administrative Office at Mountain Shadows, 9107 Del Webb Boulevard. There is one envelope per property, not per resident.
The envelope contains everything you need to know about the four (4) candidates running for the Board. There are statements to acquaint you with their qualifications and experience as well as a disclosure statement required by Nevada State Law, which states that the candidate is a member in good standing with the Association and has no conflict of interest in serving on the Board. Candidates are:
Each candidate participated in a Residents’ Forum sponsored “Meet the Candidates” evening on January 8, 2025, and a recording of that event is linked on the SCSCAI web page for your review or in case you missed it (see link below*).
Most importantly, in the packet you received via mail, you will find the yellow ballot you need to vote. There are three Board positions open, each with a three-year term and the top vote recipients will be elected to the Board. Please read the instructions on the back of the ballot carefully so your vote will be counted. You MUST use the ballot envelope to return your ballot, and you should NOT write anything on that envelope – no return address. Do not cover the bar code as it is needed to validate your ballot. To ensure privacy, the envelope will be separated from the ballot before counting.
All ballots must be received at Mountain Shadows no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Mail your ballot before the February 25, 2025, deadline, or you may hand deliver your ballot to the Mountain Shadows Community Center and place it in the ballot box. All ballots remain sealed until they are opened and tabulated at the Association’s Annual Meeting on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Counting of the ballots will take place at the Annual Membership Meeting starting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Mountain Shadows. You are welcome to come to observe the ballot counting process. The new Board officers take office once the Board Secretary certifies the results of the voting which typically happens in mid-afternoon on the vote counting day.
Voting for SCSCAI Board members is your chance to directly participate in the governance of our community. Being a Board member is an important and difficult job, and we need the best possible Board members. VOTE.

SCSCAIELECTIONCOMMITTEE
The Election Committee is a standing Committee appointed by the Sun City Summerlin Community Association, Inc., Board of Directors. The Committee works with the Executive Director, Mitzi Mills, and her staff to ensure we have a fair and transparent election of the HOA Board of Directors. The Election Committee oversees the election and the ballot count for the Association.
Following, the Election Committee members share their thoughts about serving on this Committee.
Leo Crawford-Chair
Living in Sun City Summerlin for almost 16 years has been like being on vacation all year long and volunteering is a way to help our great community be what it is, the best HOA in the USA. That’s why I’m on the Election Committee, was on the SCSCAI Board for many years, on many committees and participate in clubs including President of the Tennis Club.
Barbara Borriello
Our first visit to Las Vegas was in 1963 on our honeymoon. Over the years, we visited many times and in 2011, we decided to buy a “winter” home in Las Vegas to get away from the cold and snow in Pennsylvania. The only development I was interested in buying into was Sun City Summerlin because of its lovely homes and many amenities. We purchased a duplex, but it didn’t take long for us to realize we wanted to be here all the time and bought our second home. I like to be involved in the community I live in, to contribute and participate in what makes this a great place to live and the Election Committee is just one of the Committees I work with. Great way to meet people who become friends.
Sofia Castille
I consider it a privilege to be a volunteer on the SCSCAI Election Committee. My husband and I have been Sun City Summerlin Residents for over 10 years and find that this community offers the perfect mix of activities we both enjoy. I am happy to be able to quid pro quo by volunteering my time and skills to keep it so! My experience working with such a dedicated and responsible group of volunteers gives me a sense of purpose and belonging.
Ellen Crawford
I have been delighted to be a part of this wonderful community of Sun City Summerlin for the past 16 years. Most of my affiliations have been service related (Residents’ Forum Board, New Residents Committee, Tennis Club President), so serving on the Election Committee seemed like a good fit. It has been a pleasure to work with other dedicated volunteers to give back to this great place we call home.
Dave + Darlene Vaughan
We are a team and enjoy working together. The Election Committee needed some extra hands this year, so both of us volunteered. After working in many, many, many elections in Wyoming, the procedure is different but nevertheless continues the tradition of securing and protecting the vote of the people of our community. Our residents should be proud of the process that is so carefully followed.
Patricia (Pat) Vaughn
The committees on which I am currently or have served: Clubs and Community Organizations (CCOC), Future Planning Committee (FPC), Election Committee and Common Area Properties Committee (CAPC)-Design and Restoration Subcommittee. Having the opportunity to serve on any committee helps one understand the complexity and importance of gathering knowledge of the community for oneself and fellow residents. The agenda items and discussions at the committee level are very educational, and all meetings are recorded and available on the SCSCAI website.
Winifred (Win) Wilson
I wanted to join the Election Committee to be one of the worker bees helping out with the various types of elections we are required to hold according to the Association's requirements under the Nevada Real Estate Statutes.

If there were an official month designated for love, it would certainly be February. Researching the types of love humans experience, I found that the ancient Greek philosophers identified six forms of love; modern philosophers have named eight. One form of love mentioned by both and yet never cultivated by most of us would be that of self-love.
Have you ever noticed a tendency to put someone else’s needs ahead of your own? Saying yes when you want to say no? Have you noticed that when a loved one or friend makes a mistake or bad choice how kind and compassionate you can be toward them, but if you did something similar the self-criticism would be endless? Why is it we can be so loving and give support and compassion to others but not to ourselves?
Unfortunately, few of us really learn about self-love. While a basic human need, it has been vilified as selfish, uncaring, entitled and unacceptable by the norms of society.
This led me to research what actual steps in awareness of self-love we might take to make our lives more joyous, because we are never too old to learn to create a more thriving, satisfying life for ourselves.
Cleveland Clinic’s Psychotherapist Natacha Duke, MA, RP, offered this view: “When we talk about self-love, we often refer to embracing and upholding psychological concepts like selfrespect, self-value, self-esteem and self-worth. But ultimately, self-love revolves most around self-compassion for ourselves, the intentional choice to show up for yourself to support your needs and wants, and honor your limitations.”
According to Psychology Today, self-love comprises four aspects: self-awareness, self-worth, self-esteem and self-care. Self-awareness is defined as being aware of your thought processes and how they affect your emotions, and how emotions then cause you to react. Self-worth may be hard to create because of the continuous negative programming that we face in society, and how we focus on bad and unpleasant things. We tend to project this negativity onto ourselves so often without even realizing it. We need to recognize our intrinsic value regardless of what we have achieved or the qualities we
may possess. Self-esteem is more tied to the qualities and achievements that we feel good about. Compared to the other aspects of self-love, self-care is the easiest to do. According to Psychology Today, this is the best way to start on your journey toward discovering self-love. It describes self-care as all the acts we do to keep ourselves healthy, like taking a bath, eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and doing things that we love and care about. Self-care can also take the form of watching what you consume, like the music you listen to, the things you watch, and the people you spend time with. I looked for a source that would simply outline in easy steps how to enhance the skill of self-love. To my chagrin, the best advice came from Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT). I have paraphrased some of the tips given by this AI:
1. Self-Acceptance: accepting who you are with your flaws and imperfections.
2. Self-Care: taking care of yourself through rest, exercise, setting boundaries and showing compassion for yourself.
3. Positive Self-Talk: Replacing negative thoughts and criticism with encouraging and positive thoughts.
4. Setting Boundaries: Not easy for many of us, but learning to say no to things that might harm your well-being or cause you distress, and saying yes to things that nourish you.
5. Personal Growth: Striving to become the very best version of yourself while having patience with your progress.
6. Forgiveness: Letting go of guilt, shame and past mistakes to create a space for healing.
Summing up self-love benefits, it appears that when we love ourselves unconditionally, we can then love those around us the same way making this world a better place for all of us.

Put Your Heart into Getting Active and Eating Healthy FITNESS
Information provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among Americans, and physical inactivity is one of several major risk factors. So put your heart into getting active. Here are 5 tips to get you going.
1. There Are No Good Excuses. You can get active throughout the day. Take walks at work instead of coffee breaks, or just do more of what you already love—biking, dancing, and gardening all count.
2. Choose Your Actvities That Suit Your Style. While some people like to exercise alone, others benefit from the support of group classes or team sports. Whether indoors or outdoors, find what works for you and get your most vigorous physical activity at the time of day you feel most energetic, so you’ll stick with it.
3. You Don’t Have To Spend All Day At The Gym. Aim for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. This can reduce your risk for heart disease and your chances of developing other risk factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and being overweight. Other lifestyle benefits include providing energy, reducing stress, and building confidence.
4. A Complete Program Has Three Types Of Activity.
1) Aerobic activity like brisk walking, jogging, dancing, or biking gets your heart rate up.
2) Resistance training (like doing pushups) firms, strengthens, and tones muscles.
3) Flexibility exercises stretch and lengthen muscles so you’re more flexible—think yoga.
5. Once You Get Active, Make Sure You Stay Active. If you get bored with an activity, try something new by going to one of the four fitness centers or pools. Set short- and long-term goals to become more physically active, and plan ahead by scheduling your physical routines into your day—that way, you’ll make it a priority.

We think we’re so smart ‘cause we made it this far –and can work all the gadgets we have in our car... But the computer is there, and the problems begin and we soon can find out all of the trouble we’re in! All it takes is us hitting the wrong button once –and the cursor goes crazy and continues to bounce. So, we hit every button on the keyboard to find we have gotten ourselves into one messy bind. We end up on some sites we didn’t know could exist –we’re all over the place ‘till we get a sore wrist. And heaven forbid we see one that will ask us to click here and complete may be all that it asks. Give us all your info and send money as shown, and we’ll send millions of dollars from a King who is home in some foreign country and they’ll send to your bank the funds that they’ve promised, along with their thanks. Then you get bills from Pay Pal and a whole host of others and your emails are swamped ‘till it seems to be smothered with emails from people you do not even know and the emails keep coming as the list seems to grow!
Computers are great but we need to think first –and whatever you do, just do NOT make it worse. When it ‘buffers’ or freezes, you just want to cry; now you simply unplug it – what else could you try?!
Don’t click the unknown, think twice ‘fore you do –or you’ll find you’re saying, “I’ve been hacked... but who knew!!”
Computers are great – if you know how they work but it pays to think twice, and just not be a jerk. If we get into trouble, we could end up just lost –so next time you log on, perhaps keep fingers crossed...
“As
I See It . . . ”
What Color Are Your Glasses?
By Alan G. Spector /Link
When I began this column, 3.5 years ago, I called it, “As I See IT . . . ” because I wanted to write about life as “I” see it. Clearly, my view of life is the way “I” see it . . . through “my” glasses. We all wear glasses . . . some are tinted, some are funky, some are foggy, some are broken, and yet others are just focused. The glasses we wear determine WHAT we see and HOW we see the things around us. Many people look at the same things and yet view them so differently. I think the trick is to understand that and to accept that each of us may see things differently while still being accurate... depending on the glasses we are wearing.
So, this explains how two people can see the same movie and take away totally different messages. Two people chat with the same person for the first time and have totally different impressions. Folks who attend the same event report very different experiences. It all depends on what glasses we are wearing that day . . . what life experiences and attitudes we bring to the moment . . . what “facts” we believe to be true and how we are feeling that day. So, it is often helpful if we step back and check on what glasses we may be using to see the world that day . . . to recognize that other people may be wearing different glasses . . . to understand that it is OK to feel the way we do and how we arrived at those feelings. At the same time, we might want to understand that others may be wearing different glasses, have different feelings, and arrive at different conclusions. Everyone is entitled to their own feelings . . . and everyone is entitled to have their feelings understood and acknowledged. Validation and acceptance are important components of good relationships and a positive outlook on life.
You know, we don’t all have to wear the same glasses. Diversity is enjoyable, fun, and beneficial. We just have to understand that we are all different . . . that we each may be seeing the world through different lenses. We also can understand that we all select the glasses we want to wear. We can select critical and negative lenses or positive and optimistic lenses or even select no lenses and not even take in the enormous world around us. We can see the world in black and white or in technicolor. We can view things in exciting 3-D or in dull flat dimensions. The important thing is to know that we
DO WEAR GLASSES and so do all the other people around us. At the end of the day, WE get to select the glasses we choose to wear. WE HAVE CHOICES . . . the positive or the negative, the dull or the exciting, the attitudes of acceptance or of being judgmental.
Thus, whether you get your glasses at Warby Parker, LensCrafters, or Costco – whether they are shiny, new or hand-me-downs, WE make our own choices each day. I know the people I most love to be with - and those who help me grow and expand - and those who help me enjoy life the most - and those who help me be the best person I can be. This quartercentury mark is a perfect time to choose the best glasses we can and make the most of the life we have been given.
Good luck . . . BTW, you look GREAT in those glasses!
How Do I Find Minutes & Recordings of Past Meetings?
On May 11, 1963, I headed to the chartered bus on our trip from the Nevada Test Site (NTS) to Dodger Stadium. As I climbed on the bus, I saw a cute blond with an empty chair beside her. I quickly took it. We talked all the way to Dodger Stadium. Sandy Koufax threw a no-hitter against the hated Giants. I was so excited, and all my new friend could say was why can’t anyone hit the ball. Being a big baseball fan, I wasn’t sure this was the right lady for me. But we sat together on the trip home to the NTS, and I began to think less of the game and more of my new friend, Freda. We continued to date, and I courted her in a little bar in Cactus Springs four miles north of Indian Springs. I went to Army Summer Camp, and we exchanged letters in which one of us proposed, not sure which one it was. In less than four months of meeting, we were married on September 7, 1963, at a church on Maryland Parkway. Sixty-one years later, we are still going strong. I watch baseball while Freda watches HGTV, a perfect marriage plan!
wedding vows. We had been married for forty-three years. We are a blended family and Fred was very ill. The gathering of our family was a special gift. Our granddaughter, Grace, wrote and officiated the renewal of vows. Granddaughter, Kamden, read a poem that she wrote for the occasion. Fred drew enough strength to tell the children how proud he was of all their accomplishments, the blending of our family, and his love for each of them. After the cake-cutting, the children went outside
for a group photo, and Fred asked me to assist him into the bedroom. He sat down, smiled, said my name, then fell into my arms and passed away. Metro officers and paramedics were overwhelmed by the peacefulness of the family as they dealt with the passing of their father and noted the love they felt in the house. I will always treasure the rare gift of family love I received that day.

Joe and I were married on February 1, 1982. Our little ceremony took place at the Candlelight Wedding Chapel that was located on the Strip. Of course, we had to get married in Las Vegas since our wedding date was 2-1 (aka 21). We both lived in Burbank, California at the time and we made plans to drive to Vegas to marry. The organist at the Chapel was our witness. We had no family or friends there and after our ceremony we stayed at the Dunes
Randy&JackieGast
Here is our SCS love story. Our Randy & Jackie Love Story was unexpected, but our neighbors were persistent. A few years ago, after both of us had recently moved to Sun City Summerlin, both of our spouses passed away within a couple weeks of each other. Obviously, we were devastated by our loss. The irony is we both live on the same Sun City Summerlin street, we knew each other and spouses from neighborhood gatherings and seeing each other on walks. After our spouses passed away, my son came to live with me and Jackie's daughter moved in with her. After some time, our wonderful neighbors (one in particular!) decided to be Matchmakers. They got us to go on a walk...and the rest is history. Instantly hitting it off, we talked for hours. She's absolutely the sweetest woman and I instantly became attracted to her as if I'd known her for many years. We had lunch the next day, a dinner date the following week. Soon, we wanted to be with each other every day and after several months, my son moved away to college and her daughter also moved out, and Jackie moved in with me! After a couple more love filled months, Jackie decided to sell her house, and we made a full life commitment to each other. On September 22, 2024, we got married and EVERYONE on Sierra Heights Drive knows our "Love Story". If you see us walking, holding hands, and smiling . . . give us a wave and we will gladly return the gesture!
RoyHulick&IvySmolin
We met online on a free dating site. We started playing poker at a bowling alley near my house, for “prizes and tips”. We fell in love with the game and played at local casinos for several years. We came to Vegas every 4-6 months for vacations since we met. One day Ivy said, “We should get married in Vegas” and (after hemming and hawing for effect), I happily agreed. We decided to elope and tell no one in our family (except for Ivy’s two kids) and proceeded to make plans to get married by “Elvis” in Las Vegas! We booked a corner suite in the Golden Nugget, and an appointment with an “Elvis” officiated chapel near Downtown. We were escorted by a limo to the chapel and had a
wonderful and fun wedding ceremony in our favorite place on earth. We spent the remaining afternoon calling our family and announcing our surprise nuptials, and then having an amazing dinner at Vic and Anthony’s . . . And a lot of other amazing dinners that week. And 5 years later we packed up our lives and moved to Sun City Summerlin. The second-best decision we have ever made. The people are here the best and we have made more friends here in the first year than we made in the last 10 years in Florida. Thank you Sin (Sun) City.
Carl(Eddie)&DonnaJuncker
Carl (Eddie) Juncker and Donna Williams tied the knot and became one in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 07, 1967. Both Eddie and Donna were born and raised in Las Vegas. Eddie had just graduated from Rancho High School and Donna was just starting at Rancho High School when they met. Eddie's brother belonged to a boy's club, Jr Odd Fellows and Donna, a member of the girl's club of the Rebecca Lodge. Donna noticed Don's brother picking him up after a joint activity and told Don his brother was pretty cute, and asked if he could introduce her to him and he did. They dated for four years before he was drafted into the Army. Before he leaves, he gets on one knee and asks for her hand in marriage. Of course, Donna makes sure he gets her mom's approval as she raised four children alone. Eddie and Donna have two daughters, six grandkids and two great grandchildren. They renewed their wedding vows in February 2017 at The Summit with 75 family and friends in celebration of our 50th anniversary. Our love of travel has kept us moving. We have been to several countries and states. Next trip is to Spain and Portugal.
David&KarenKretchmar
It was the year 2000 and we were already planning to get married in August but had made no firm plans. A radio station in St. Louis announced a drawing in which they were going to fly 20 couples to Las Vegas to get married on Valentine’s Day at the Golden Nugget. Karen has always felt that she was a “lucky person”, but David has never believed in luck. To help her “luck”, Karen made sure that we went to each of the sponsors locations where the drawings were being held, on four consecutive Saturday mornings. Our entry form was selected at the third location, and 3 is Karen’s lucky number. It also helped that it was a snowy morning, and we had to shovel our way out of our driveway, so the number of couples entering that drawing was low. Very few couples can say they won each other in a radio contest! Karen still believes in luck, and David believes that luck is what happens when preparation and opportunity meet.

We are living the dream!
Married at The Little Chapel of the West on the Las Vegas Strip January 14, 2024. Living in Sun City Summerlin since May, we love it here. Our favorite is the indoor hot tub and pool! We love to travel and just returned from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where we rode camels, and a Can-Am Buggy on the beach!
Al&RhodaLange
On April 22, 2000, Al and Rhoda Lange were quietly married at the former Imperial Palace Chapel. After disclosing their plans to family and several friends, they stole away from Rock Rapids, IA, to Las Vegas during spring break. Their memorable adventure began at lift-off from the Sioux Falls, SD, airport and continued after landing at McCarran International. After check-in at the affordable Imperial Palace, their utmost importance was obtaining a marriage license. A long line of couples awaited them at the Clark County Courthouse because it was Easter weekend. The Chapel at the Imperial Palace was convenient. Not only did they tie the knot on Saturday morning, but they were also consumed by the local attractions. That evening the happy couple were awed by ring-side seats to the spectacular Siegfried & Roy Show. Easter morning’s tour of Hoover Dam didn’t disappoint. In May, Al and Rhoda hosted a community celebration of their marriage.
Rhoda’s junior high school students served as kitchen helpers and a coworker's popular dance band entertained the cheerful guests. After retirement and the encouragement of Rhoda’s son who lives in Vegas, they purchased their home in 2009. Never in their wildest dreams did they expect to be celebrating their 25 years of marriage in Sun City Summerlin. Time flies when you’re having fun!
EdLosch&NancyShaver
Ed and I met in a Los Angeles parking lot in 2009, on a group bike ride. I was a Canadian on a winter holiday, so after a few years of long-distance dating back and forth, I moved down on the "90-day Fiancée" visa. That visa requires a speedy wedding with not much lead time, so that led us to the obvious solution … Vegas! We drove in from L.A., stayed at the Luxor, and being outdoorsy people, we bought the Spring Mountains wedding package. We moved back to Canada a couple of years later as I still worked there, and Ed can work from anywhere as he is a software guy. Our love of the American Southwest has pulled us back though, so after I retired, we returned as snowbirds in 2023, spending most of the winter months here. We love Sun City Summerlin and may transition to making Las Vegas our permanent home in the coming years.
Dan&JaneMarcisz
About 30 years ago my sweetheart Jane Clemens (never married) and I (3rd time’s a charm) decided to wed in Las Vegas. We were living in California for many years, but most of Jane’s friends and family were back in Minnesota and mine in Chicago. It was to be a small affair so on a whim we chose Harrah’s in Las Vegas. Back in 1995 Harrah’s had a small wedding Chapel and a great small restaurant called Claudine’s. Claudine’s had a piano bar and a small private room perfect for our celebration. Fast forward 25 years to 2019 as thoughts of a retirement location approached, semi-retirement for me. So, we started to consider where we might want to live. Las Vegas was not even
on our list which consisted of Inver Grove Heights Minnesota, Scottsdale Arizona and Henderson Nevada. Lucky for us we got around to looking at resales in Sun City Summerlin and found the perfect community. Now approaching our 30th wedding anniversary we’re loving the SCS community and the many many activities available here, especially the 3 golf courses. Jane plays in the Ladies Executive group, and I play with the Men’s Niners group. We’re extremely busy old people (77 and 82) and loving it. I’m serving as President of our FRESH SPRING DRIVE Sub-HOA and still actively representing Pac West Home Loans in California and Nevada.
Jimmy&NancyMcDonald
I was the mail boy, and she was the new girl in accounting at the Fabulous Sands Hotel. I literally wore a hole in the file cabinet I leaned on in her office while repeatedly asking her out for a date. After dozens of rejections, she finally agreed to play tennis for an upcoming company tournament, but it was clearly not a date. Thank goodness, it rained (IN Vegas?). I suggested we go out for dinner, and, against her better judgement, she agreed, again this was not a date, but only dinner. Dinner was great and it was still early, so we ended up dancing on top of the Landmark Hotel. It was a beautiful sunrise when I dropped her off after a non-date. We had a second non-date that evening. We fell in love that first night as we danced in the sky, we just felt right in each other’s arms. Five months later, on a Monday night she asked me to marry her, and we were married that Saturday. We exchanged our vows at the Little Chapel of the West on February 5th, 1977. This year we will celebrate 48 wonderful years together.
Jim&KarenMitchell
Jim Mitchell and Karen Marks met in 1997 in their home state of Pennsylvania and were married in 2007 here in Las Vegas at the Mon Bel Ami Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas Strip. After spending a few years in the Chicago area, they moved to Sun City Summerlin in 2017.
Leonard(Lenny)& RuthNevins
We met on a blind date. We eloped on January 29, 1966. I was a college student, and I was on semester break. We planned our elopement. I just couldn't leave without telling my parents. My Mom leapt into action. We ended up flying to Las Vegas from Los Angeles with my Mom, Dad, Sister and Lenny’s Aunt. We were married in the judge’s chambers downtown Las Vegas. We celebrated with a wedding dinner at the Stardust, and we stayed at the Hacienda. The hotels are gone but we are still going strong 59 years later.
Henry&VictoriaOchoa
Our story begins upon my moving back to the U.S. from Mexico in October 2017. After living abroad for 10 years and losing my husband to dementia, my friends decided I should start dating. They decided to sign me up for computer dating which I refused to do. I was intrigued however by luncheon meetings as I could meet people and find new restaurants. Ironically, the first was Mexican where I met several people who became friends. There was one man there who asked to taste my meal. Skip to several luncheons later and sharing my meals with this man, he asked me out. By December I met his family in CA and then he went on a 6-week trip with me to my house in Mazatlán. My dogs, Coco and Chanel, always traveled with me and always had the same two first-class seats. Chanel jumped in her usual seat where she patiently waited for the attendant to bring her water. Not happy that he had her seat, she sneered at him, turned around and passed gas in his face. To my surprise, he proposed, I said yes, and we were married in June of 2018. We live in Sun City Summerlin with two little Yorkies and spend our time enjoying the Theatre Club.
Tim&LindaRaasch
My name is Tim Raasch, and my wife is Linda. I will give you a short story about our 45-year love affair with Las Vegas and each other. We met on Jan. 1st of 1979 in Sioux Falls SD. Linda was a telephone operator for NW Bell, and I worked for Land O’Lakes. We went to church and sang in the choir together. We were married in November 1979 and went on our honeymoon in Las Vegas staying at the Westward Ho. We were blessed with three beautiful children and 8 grandchildren. We vacationed many times in Las Vegas over the next 40 years never dreaming we would buy a home here to retire. 2019 arrived and we were able to purchase a home in SCS. We wintered here and spent the other three seasons in South Dakota. We sold our home in SD in 2024 and have been here full time since September. This November, we celebrated 45 years married and had the honor of having our son John who is a Lutheran pastor in Menasha, Wisconsin hold a service in our home to reaffirm our vows. Our oldest daughter Michelle played the wedding hymn that was played at our wedding 45 years previous. Our entire family was able to attend except one granddaughter who was in the musical Fiddler on the Roof in college and was not able to attend. We took all adults to the Billy Joel concert at Allegiant Stadium and a new chapter of our life has started.
Gerry&BarbaraSokolski
We met when a mutual friend invited me to attend the Thanksgiving Dance at St. John Fisher College. Gerry was a freshman at “Fisher”, and I was a senior at St. Agnes High School. The year was 1959. My 18year-old self thought this guy is special. He was CUTE, very smart, respectful and attentive. We dated off and on in 1960 and during that time I started dating a red-headed drummer. My mother was inclined to make serious novenas during my dating time with “Jack”. Gerry’s sis-
ter invited me to his surprise 19th birthday party neglecting to tell me to bring someone, I came alone. That night officially began our courtship. “Jack” and the novenas were forgotten! We were married on Saturday, August 3, 1963. November 1963, he reported to Officer Candidate School in Providence, RI. He spent a total of 22 years on active and reserve duty retiring at the rank of Commander. In 2003 we moved to Sun City Summerlin and celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary repeating our vows at The Little Chapel of the West. It’s been an adventure for the past 61 years. We are blessed.
Kevin&BethSouthland:
It was All About a Bear and a Bunny. They met online playing Toontown Rewritten. Their main characters were Bear Withme, a polar bear and Noah, a periwinkle rabbit. When Beth volunteered to host a run for the ATTA (Adult Toontown Addicts) group, Kevin aka Noah offered to help. They used Skype to talk through the logistics of the run. Their first call lasted for hours. They immediately felt a connection and talked daily after that. Beth flew to Massachusetts to meet Kevin to see if the connection was real, and it was. A few months later, Kevin flew to Las Vegas for a couple of weeks. Beth spent six weeks working remotely from Kevin’s place that Fall. In January, Kevin filled his car with as many of his belongings as would fit, including Jake, his dog, and drove to Las Vegas. They talked about getting married, ensuring the date was not close to a holiday, so it would be their special day. Beth suggested October 1st. While Beth was working that day, Kevin filled out the paperwork
online. He then told Beth they needed to go downtown to get the license. They did that, walked over to the courthouse, and were married. This year marks their 5th anniversary.

Yohay
This is an East meets West story. Steve, a native New Yorker, practiced law for 40 years in Washington, DC. Vickie is a nearly native Las Vegan (her family came here when she was 3 years old). Steve, whose son lives in the area, decided in early 2010 to consider retiring here. He went on a website seeking someone of his own “vintage” to help him learn about life here. There he saw Vickie. A recent widow. A cousin had urged her to consider new relationships. As Steve planned to visit and scout out Vegas homes, Vickie suggested they talk by phone. After a month of talking (at 3:30 a.m. Pacific, 6:30 a.m. Eastern time!) they agreed to meet for dinner when Steve came here. Steve told her, “If we don’t hate each other, we’ll go out a second night.” The result? Together for fourteen years, they celebrate eleven years of marriage this month. They moved to Sun City Summerlin eight years ago. They say: “We treasure our life

Street Walkers
No, I’m not talking about those type of street walkers! Early morning Patrol drivers encounter many SCS Residents walking our streets. Unfortunately, we see many folks in the street itself, wearing dark clothing . . . or rather we don’t see them! If only they knew how hard they are to see and how poor the eyesight is of many residents, I’m sure they would not do it. It is also illegal. Don’t get me wrong, walking is great for your health . . . except if a car ploughs into you. I’m a hiker, doing about 500 miles a year, and a former group fitness instructor, so yes, get out and walk . . .30 minutes a day at a good pace is highly recommended. However, stay on the sidewalk. Please.
As a Patrol driver working the mostly empty streets early in the morning, I’m looking sideways a lot at the houses. I am looking for 911 lights, water leaks and open garage doors. I’m only going 10-15 mph, but I still do not want to run into you. On any one morning shift (3:30-7:30) in the winter, I see a couple of dozen walkers, including those with their dogs. A full quarter to a half of these are in the street; many even have their back to the traffic. So, this is not a minor problem.
I have heard the argument that the concrete sidewalks are harder on the feet and joints than the tarmac. As a retired engineer, I can tell you that this has no basis in fact. The cushioning and support in your foot-
wear negate any minor differences . . . if there were any. Additionally, going up and down the curbs is good for you as it enhances your balance and provides some stability training as well. The bottom line is that there is no good reason for being in the street and a lot of potential hazards.
In Summary:
Don’t:
Ÿ Walk in the street. It’s illegal and dangerous.
Ÿ Walk with your back to the traffic. You may need to initiate avoidance action if the driver doesn’t see you.
Ÿ Wear black or dark clothing. You can’t be seen easily.
Ÿ Wear headphones or ear buds that drown out background noises.
Do:
Ÿ Stay on the sidewalk.
Ÿ Face the traffic.
Ÿ Wear light clothing or a reflective jacket or vest.
We begin the New Year by providing information that may assist Owners in understanding the basics of Sub-Associations.
Sub-Associations are exactly as the words imply, a sub-set of homes within a Master Homeowner Association. A SubAssociation lives under the broad umbrella of the Master Association’s governing “rules”, although they also have their own governing documents, which may be more restrictive. Such restrictions may vary, depending on the needs of individual Sub-Associations. In case of a conflict with rules, the Master Association’s declarations will always prevail.
It should be noted that all Owners, whether single family or Sub-Association, pay the same Master Association fees and always receive the same benefits and amenities as provided by the Master.
A major difference with Sub-Associations is that the owners may receive additional services, which are paid for by the collection of separate fees. These fees cover things such as exterior maintenance, some insurance, some utility services and landscape maintenance. Also, Sub-Association owners generally do
not own the land surrounding their homes. Such land is equally owned, shared and maintained by all owners within a SubAssociation. These services may vary from Sub-Association to Sub-Association, depending on the Sub-Associations Governing Documents and decisions made by the Sub-Association Board or membership.
In line with that, each Sub-Association has its own Board of Directors, as elected by the owners, with administrative and compliance duties carried out by professional management companies, although there are cases where Sub-Associations are self-managed.
In Sun City Summerlin’s case, there are 7781 single family homes, of which 2039 are town-homes. These townhomes are in 39 separate Sub-Associations and represent twenty-six percent of all Sun City Summerlin homes.
We hope this brief explanation provides a basic understanding.
Telephone numbers published in the Link and on our website SunCityLink.com are in the 702 area code unless noted otherwise.
