PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE
A new year is upon us and I hope that everyone in the community enjoyed a great holiday season.
The first quarter of each year is a busy one in our community as we have a Board of Directors election, where three candidates will be elected, and we are also in the process in developing our budget for FY2026 which begins July 1, 2025.
Candidates will be out campaigning and there will be multiple meet the candidate nights where candidates will be available to answer questions. Ballots will be mailed out in mid-January with election results determined in late February.
Our administrative staff, the Executive Director and all Department Directors, have been busy preparing a proposed budget for FY2026. Once completed the details will be provided to the Board of Directors for review prior to our budget hearings that will occur in the latter half of March.
These budget hearings are open for our owners to attend and provide their input on the budget proposal. The review is conducted by department and questions can be asked at a department level as well as line-item detail.
If you have comments/feedback/questions please plan on attending many or all of the budget hearings. By attending these sessions, you will get a much better understanding of how our budgets are developed and how thorough the process is.
As all of you should be aware of, we adopted a new Reserve Study earlier this year as mandated by Nevada Revised Statute (NRS). The new Reserve Study indicated that our reserves would be funded at approximately 45% as of 7/1/2024. Per legal counsel we have been directed to attain a 70% funding level by the close of FY2029 (6/30/29).
The Task Force that has been asked to develop various funding models in order for us to attain this funding level has determined that it will save all homeowners money on their annual assessment (HOA) in the long term (4 years), if we direct a maximum amount towards our reserve this year, as opposed to smoothing the funding over four years which will take us to the close of FY2029.
Due to the fact that as of this writing, (12/18/2024) we do not have resolution on the New Owner Reserve Assessment (NORA) amendment we have to run our budget numbers using the current NORA rate, this means we will, as discussed at the many Town Halls we conducted, be facing another 20% increase in our annual assessment (HOA) for FY2026.
This has been caused by a lack of voter participation. Out of 7,756 eligible voters, 1,846 have failed to submit a ballot. This represents 23.8% of our electorate. Of those voting 4,791 (81.1%) have voted yes while 1,119 (18.9%) have voted no. If the NORA amendment is ultimately enacted, we can expect our annual assessment to be approximately $250 less ($20 - $21 a month) beginning in FY2027 when compared to what it will be if the amendment is not enacted.
Rorick, President
In the near future our operating expense by department also will be presented in a pie chart format. This will be a monthly snapshot. As an example, the first one to be presented will be the November 2024 operating expense. This information will be broadcast via email and in the Link magazine. In closing we should all be proud to be living in Sun City Summerlin. Just five or six years ago we were not known east of the Mississippi River. Today we are in the top three, and many times listed as the number one rated age restricted active adult community in the country. In order to stay there, we need our Board to continue providing the necessary funding to maintain all of our amenities and assets (including equipment) in excellent condition. This drives property values which is one of the Board’s primary fiduciary responsibilities.

The SCSCAI Election Committee is pleased to announce that four candidates are vying for the three open seats on the Sun City Summerlin Community Association, Inc. Board of Directors. The candidates have submitted their names, and all meet the qualification of being a unit owner, a member in good standing, and have stated they have no professional or personal relationships that would appear to a reasonable person to result in a conflict of interest if elected to serve as a member of the Board. Each elected candidate will serve a three-year term. Candidates met with the Election Committee on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, to review the details of the election process and hear the extensive time commitment required of Directors.

“As I See It . . . ”
By Alan G. Spector /Link Best Friends
One of the best things about living in SCS (or anywhere for that matter) is our friendships. If you are open to it, making friends in SCS is easy. Everyone came from somewhere and is looking to make new friends. That said, I do draw a distinction between “friends” and “BEST friends”. We might have hundreds of acquaintances, dozens of friends, yet only a very small number of “best” friends. Sometimes referred to as “besties”, they are those folks who create a safe place for us to land, allow us to see the deep meanings of life, and make everything 3-dimentional and in technicolor.
I have some thoughts on “Best Friends” which I have gathered along my way throughout this life.
Ÿ If a friendship lasts longer than 7 years, it will last a lifetime (let’s call it a BF).
Ÿ Never worry about losing a BF because a real BF can never be lost.
Ÿ A BF is not the person you spend the most time with... it is who you have the best time with.
Ÿ BFs do not need daily conversation... closeness does not always need togetherness.
Ÿ BFs are those who make your problems their problems, so you do not have to go through them alone.
Ÿ BFs see the pain in your eyes... others see the smile on your face.
Ÿ Only BFs will tell you to your face what others are saying behind your back.
Ÿ Sometimes being with your BF is all that you need. Period. Give it some thought. BFs are a blessing and a precious gift in life. The value of a best friend lies in the deep emotional support, trust, and companionship they offer.
Best Friends often:
1. Provide Unconditional Support: They stand by you in difficult times and celebrate your successes without judgment.
2. Offer Honest Advice: A best friend will give you sincere feedback, even if it’s not what you want to hear, because they care about your well-being.
3. Boost Emotional Well-being: Having someone to share your
thoughts, feelings, and experiences which enhances mental and emotional health.
4. Create a Sense of Belonging: Best Friends make you feel understood, accepted, and valued, fostering a strong sense of connection.
5. Lifelong Companionship: The deep bond shared with a Best Friend often lasts a lifetime, providing consistency and stability.
6. Shared Memories: Best Friends create lasting memories through shared experiences, which strengthens the bond and enriches life.
Having a Best Friend adds depth and meaning to relationships, making life more fulfilling and less lonely. This might be a great time to call your BF, tell them about this column and thank them for being your BF. Or perhaps, you could go see your BF and bring them this column... take them for coffee, go for a long walk, share a beautiful song or concert, or just give them a hug and a great, big THANK YOU!
Winter is not dark or cold when you have a BF. You are never really alone when you have a BF. Everyone is worthy of having a BF. You are worth it... count your blessings and share it with a BF.
If you are accompanied by a guest, make sure to register them by obtaining a guest pass at the Social Monitor station. We would love to hear from you! Do you have a movie in mind you would like to see? Please send your suggestions to Tina Marie Montoya at TinaM@suncitylv.com. We are always looking for great ideas, so reach out and let us know! Enjoy the shows!

The Ever-Changing YOU!
It is believed that a form of New Year’s resolutions began some 4,000 years ago with the ancient Babylonians.
“Tradition” has continued, and we may have resolved to create better habits or rid ourselves of old ones as we greet each New Year. But, despite our good intentions, resolutions are made but usually come up short; it’s easy to become discouraged. A study by researchers at Scranton University found that only 19% of individuals keep their resolutions with most goals abandoned by mid-January. However, new research offers better insights into shedding light on how to change our habits and be more likely to achieve those sought-after goals.
Mentally, hope springs eternal, and the New Year always represents a clean slate for how we might improve ourselves going forward after the indulgences of the holiday season and past year. I researched several sources and gleaned what I believe to be the most sensible information to ensure success no matter how you may have failed in the past; the ever-changing you just may hit the mark this brand-new year! Here’s what I learned: Harvard Health.edu sums up the psychological process taking place and explains how both good habits and bad habits occur. According to this website, the three steps are a loop, if you will, that triggers a habit. They are called the Three Rs:
1. Reminder: a trigger initiating the behavior
2. Routine: the behavior or action you take
3. Reward: the benefit from the behavior or action
Each one is linked to the others. Harvard Health.edu demonstrates how the loop works in their example: Say you have a habit of eating junk food when you watch TV at night.
Your 8 p.m. TV show begins (reminder), you go to the kitchen to gather your snacks (routine), and you eat them while you watch your program (reward).
When the reward is achieved, in this case the pleasure of comforting junk food, you have a desire to repeat the action with the next reminder, and the cycle begins again.
As you become aware of what triggers your habits, there are ways you can change them, beginning with perhaps something as simple as having a vegetable tray or some other low-calorie food available to snack on. Or make a plan for how you will break the loop; maybe taping that 8 p.m. show for another time and doing another task instead.
Good advice also came from a site called www.verywellmind.com: Do not see yourself as a failure if you slip and slide back into the habit you are trying to change. Instead, learn from it – really take time to analyze what it was that triggered the slip and not beat yourself up over it.
Understand that whatever habit you want to change may have taken years to create and cannot be undone in a matter of weeks or even a couple of months. That old cliché “we are a work in progress” is true. We CAN change, but not overnight.
As the weeks of January and February pass into March, it’s important to revisit why you wanted to change this habit in the first place, to remind yourself what you have to gain by this change, and no matter the setback, to renew your dedication to advancing towards your goals. No matter how small the baby steps are that you take, every baby step will lead to forward momentum. Start with a doable, small change and go from there.
This could be the year your resolutions are successful, and your ever-changing self feels empowered. Join me in saying, “We can do this!”
“Let each new year find you a better person.”

Happy 2025, Movement is Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine! FITNESS
What is Lifestyle Medicine?
Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Lifestyle medicine certified clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverses such conditions. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine- a whole-food, plant predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections- also provide effective prevention for these conditions.
Lifestyle Medicine is the Solution
Ÿ Evidence overwhelmingly supports lifestyle medicine’s efficacy in treating, halting the progression, at times even reversing, as well as preventing chronic and select autoimmune conditions.
Ÿ Lifestyle medicine empowers patients to take far greater control of their heath destinies, reducing the need for costly therapies.
Jessie Miles SCSCAI Director of Fitness
Sun City Summerlin 2025 Lectures, Classes and Workshops
The Fitness Department and the Fitness & Health Committee will work towards focusing on the six Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine as we bring speakers, classes and workshops to the community:
Ÿ Nutrition
Ÿ Physical Activity
Ÿ Stress Management
Ÿ Restorative Sleep
Ÿ Social Connection
Ÿ Avoidance of Risky Substances
Lifestyle medicine is needed to reverse the alarming trend of chronic disease afflicting over 60% of American adults and now far too many children.
It’s the solution to addressing the restoration of both human and planetary health: the foods that protect health and fight disease are what will also enable reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and preservation of natural resources.
Information provided by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine Gym Equipment Update
You’ll notice this year that there will be some pieces of equipment replaced in the gyms, so that we can maintain good, quality, commercial equipment for longevity and for aesthetics. Honoring Residents Corner: Tom Burt
By Tom Burt, Resident
Tom and his late wife, Irene, moved to Sun City Summerlin in December 1999. They bought their home in late summer 1998, planning to eventually retire here from San Jose, CA. They chose Sun City Summerlin because it was pleasant, well established and offered refuge from California’s high taxes, traffic congestion and high prices.
Tom was born in Detroit, MI and earned a master’s degree in math/computer science. The first computer program Tom wrote was back in 1965 while in college in Detroit. And from then on, Tom was hooked on computers. He met Irene while they were working at the Detroit Public Library. They were married in 1967 and had 55 happy years together. They had three sons. Tom started his career in the computing field in 1968 working at the Chrysler Corporation Engineering Computer Center as lead systems programmer overseeing Chrysler’s Control Data supercomputers. At that time, Chrysler was doing pioneering work in computer aided design and manufacturing.
In 1968, Tom got a similar job with Fluor Engineers in Irvine, California and moved the family to the west coast. Tom went through a succession of software engineering management jobs with Hughes Aircraft, Citibank, Ashton-Tate and Borland Software. The Borland job involved a move from Irvine to the Santa Cruz area and later to San Jose. In 1994 Tom left Borland to work as Vice-President of Development at a software startup developing an electronic medical record system. That lasted until late 1999, when Tom and Irene decided it was time to cash out, leave the California rat-race, and move to Sun City Summerlin.
Tom quickly joined the Sun City Summerlin Computer Club, and in short order began volunteering as a board member, instructor, membership chair, webmaster, newsletter editor and writer. He eventually served as President and currently serves as Vice President, wearing many operational hats. Tom teaches three classes each month, including the regular monthly Investing SIG. The other class topics vary each month based on what’s trendy (like Artificial Intelligence, Digital Art) or what hasn’t been covered recently (Photo Editing, Android phones, Networking). The Computer Club easily takes up 20 hours a week of Tom’s time.
Tom’s retirement was also short. In December of 2002, he joined as a founding member of the IT Committee and also joined the Association staff as a half-time employee in the IT Department. Tom wrote many software tools that the Association uses in day-to-day operations. These included the Fitness Check-in system, a Ticket Sales program, programs for the Sun City Summerlin Patrol for looking up members and for
logging events, mailing list tools for the Link and, software for validating ballots in elections. Tom also administered the Association’s website. Tom worked in the IT Department for more than 15 years, “retiring” in early 2018. He still does occasional contract work to maintain and update some of those software tools.
When younger, Tom sang and played the guitar (mostly folk and ballads). He’s an avid student of science, particularly quantum physics and cosmology, but also chemistry and medicine. Tom was an eager, if not very good, golfer. He’s also a sports fan, following golf, football and NASCAR racing. Other than the Computer Club, Tom has been a member of the Investment Club and the Conservative Club. Tom is also a skillful cook.
Tom nominates Janet Bailey for the next Honoring Residents Corner.
New Year’s Resolutions Made–Well, We Tried . . .
By Patti Tripp/ Link
They say chicken soup is good for the soul –and so is a New Year - or so I am told.
It’s turning the page on the year that’s gone by –with new resolutions we think we might try. Our intentions are good, so we’ll give them a shot, but how many we keep, well, it turns out matters not!
If we change just one thing, we’re ahead of the game but this time, next year, things could still be the same. Will we now change our diet or work out at the gym?
I’d be willing to bet that the odds are, well, SLIM! Will we stop wasting money on the things we don’t need as we we’re searching on Amazon as what seems like warp speed! Will we learn just to laugh at ourselves now and then?
And remember our youth and recall way back when our life seemed much simpler, and our bodies were fit –when we thought the world ended if we got just one ‘zit’. But we now find ourselves as the ‘seniors’ we are –and sometimes we wonder how we made it this far... We get Senior Discounts – at our age, it’s a gift. We’re forgiven when forgetful - so you’re wondering if there’s a reason to smile when these perks come our way. We’ve earned it, Good Lord, ‘cause we’re old and we’re gray. So, as each new year passes and our knees start to crack, or can’t find our glasses, or BENGAY for our back, there’s hope and there’s promise of what could lie ahead, but Midnight came around, and you had long been in bed! You can make resolutions any day that you please. They are so hard to keep yet abandoned with ease. So, start out with ONE, and then see how you do. You’ve the rest of the year to succeed and come through. ... Or just picture a future with a little less strife –as you cannot control everything in your life! So, take a deep breathe, take one day at a time, and so, as I come to the end of this rhyme –you change what you can – though it may take a whilethere’s always next year – one more reason to smile. Resolutions or not, a new beginning is here –So, do what you can – or start over next year!
Happy New Year from Sun City Summerlin Patrol! SUNCITYSUMMERLINPATROL
As we celebrate the changing of our calendar to 2025, it is a time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the future. How can we all be safer and happier this year?
While Patrol’s look is changing from tan and brown to blue and black, our primary mission has not changed. “To provide a presence in the community to discourage crime and provide assistance within the Sun City Summerlin Community Association.”
The only way Patrol can accomplish this is with the many volunteer hours our members provide 24/7, 365 days a year; and the only way Patrol can exist is by recruiting new members like YOU!
Many of you are new retirees who are enjoying all the amenities our wonderful community offers - sleeping in, going to the pool, golfing, playing cards and socializing and you deserve it, but maybe one day you will wake up and “miss” the opportunity to truly help and make a difference.
Whether you are an early riser and love to view our beautiful sunrises, or a night owl who doesn’t mind staying up late, Patrol has a shift for you.
Maybe you are new to the community and get “lost”. The daytime shifts will familiarize you with every street and cul-de-sac with the opportunity to scope out your neighbor’s landscaping.
As a Dispatcher, you will communicate with the Association and community personnel, connecting them with our neighbors to get the help they may need as well as to direct our drivers to calls from concerned citizens.
Our Information Centers are manned 8 a.m.-4 p.m. every day. These officers provide information, directions and help for both our residents as well as vendors and delivery people.
If Patrol were able to have officers for four cars, one dispatcher per shift, two Watch Commanders and two Information officers a day, we would need 36 volunteers per day/ 252 volunteers per week. We ask that our members give us four hours a week. Our current membership is between 180190. Many days we only have one car patrolling. Our membership is aging. Many members are part time residents and leave their shifts open when they are gone. We need help.
Maybe you are hesitant because you have no experience. Most of our members entered Patrol that way. I was a children’s librarian and a teacher, but I have always loved volunteering. Helping people makes me feel better about myself.
Patrol has a program called “Come Look Us Over”. With no obligation,
you may spend two hours with a Dispatcher, Information Center Officer, Driver or all three and find out what we do and how you can help. You may find the form on the SCS Association website: Resident Services/Patrol/Try Us Out or pick one up at Patrol Base. Fill it out and bring it into Base or give it to any Social Monitor and they will get it to us.
Hope to see you soon and wave to us - Patrol is HERE for YOU!

About Exterior Lighting
The trend of exterior strip lighting has been gaining significant momentum in recent years, transforming outdoor spaces into vibrant and inviting environments. As homeowners and designers seek to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of patios, decks, and gardens, strip lighting serves as an ideal solution to create ambiance while emphasizing architectural features.
One of the primary appeals of exterior strip lighting is its versatility. Available in various colors, lengths, and brightness levels, these lights can be easily customized to suit any setting. Whether outlining a pathway, illuminating a patio railing, or accentuating landscaping features, strip lighting offers a seamless way to enhance outdoor areas without overpowering the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Advancements in LED technology have also elevated the appeal of this trend. LED strip lights are energy-efficient, durable, and long-lasting, making them a sustainable choice for out-
door illumination. Unlike traditional lighting options, LEDs produce minimal heat and are less prone to burnout, ensuring a consistently beautiful glow throughout the seasons. Furthermore, many LED strips come with smart technology integration, allowing users to control color changes and brightness through mobile apps or remote systems.
As outdoor living continues to be a focal point for homeowners, the incorporation of exterior strip lighting is poised to remain a prominent trend, offering an attractive and practical way to illuminate outdoor spaces while adding a touch of modern elegance.
Homeowners who want to install strip lighting must submit an ARC application for approval. Please note that only clear lights are permitted year-round. Colored lights may be displayed up to 30 days before a holiday in October, November, and December. Colored lights must be changed to clear lights no later than 15 days after the holidays.

Toys for Tots Charity Pickleball Tournament
By Suzanne Esber, President, Sun City Summerlin Pickleball Club
For the 9th year in a row, Sun City Pickleball Club hosted the Toys for Tots tournament over 3 days, December 6-8. 143 residents and outside players participated in this favorite holiday event with many spectators cheering on their favorite teams. On Friday and Sunday, women and men competed in Mixed Doubles play. We held the Women’s Doubles on Saturday morning and the Men’s Doubles in the afternoon. The players were organized into groups by level and the teams played each other for 6 to 8 games. Gold, silver, and bronze pins were awarded in each group. This year, we gave gift certificates to the most festively dressed teams.
We’d like to congratulate the many club members who received awards for their play.
Men’s Gold - Bruce Coleman & Jerry Lawrence; Eric Oase & Bobby Oliveto
Men’s Bronze - Rob Leonard; Greg Schulze
Mixed Gold – Patrick & Joyce Mahers; Cathy & Nick Rohaly; Boon Duffy & Bobby Oliveto
Mixed Silver - Liane Emerson & Dennis Webb; Georgia Frieswick & Darryl Boyd; Katie Neumann & Eric Oase; Bob & Jan Harper; Denise & Bill Schwarz
Mixed Bronze - Linda Buccelli & Mark Sampsel; Sue Zager & Bill Korol; Amy & Bruce Coleman
While everyone loves to play, we rely on the 25 club members who volunteer to help run this event. They take on many tasks including court ambassador, scoresheet runner, score recorder, first aid, raffle baskets, and of course, the necessary set up and tear down. Peg Albrecht, who is 90 and a former tennis umpire, has served as a court ambassador for five years. “I enjoy organizing and watching the play, and the camaraderie among the players in the group is so much fun,” said Peg. Volunteer Justine Linzalone coordinated the popular decorated raffle baskets, and we raised $1,800. Augie Constanzo, who was

the Tournament Director, said, “It gives me a great deal of satisfaction organizing this event every year. Everyone has a very good time playing pickleball and we raised $9,535 including the raffles for the Las Vegas Marines, Toys for Tots program.”
We appreciate that SCSCAI allows us to use the Desert Vista courts as we are one of the few clubs that host charity tournaments in Las Vegas. It was another successful event where we brought the pickleball playing community together to support the Toys for Tots program.

Sun City Residents Shine at the USA Pickleball National Championships
By Suzanne Esber, President, Sun City Summerlin Pickleball Club
What’s it like to play at a National Championships? “It was a super fun experience,” said Sun City resident Nancy Popek. “I entered as a 4.0 pickleball player and played with 16 other ladies in the 75-79 year singles group. I was very happy with winning three rounds and playing close in the other two.” Five Pickleball Club members qualified to play at this event held in Mesa, Arizona on November 9-17, 2024. Each of them had to win a gold medal at a prior Golden Ticket tournament to be eligible to participate in the Nationals. They then worked hard at practicing and playing to prepare themselves for this amateur and pro event that hosted 2,000 players. The venue was the Arizona Athletic Grounds, a spectacular facility, with 41 pickleball courts including 4 medal courts and a stadium court that seats 2,500.
Dennis Webb and Nancy Popek played Mixed Doubles winning bronze in their division 3.5 75-79 years. Also winning bronze, Cathy Rohaly and Kathy Morris played 4.0 60-64 years Women’s Doubles. Steve Waterworth and his partner played Men’s Doubles in the 4.5-5.0 65-69 years division and placed 5th. Dennis and Nancy each also played Singles. Steve explained, “We were all very happy with our performances as the competition was very high. We battled through heat, long days, and a high level of players to achieve exciting finales.” Las Vegas players and friends watched everyone play and cheered them on. Also, each court was live streamed so others could watch from home.
Let’s congratulate our Sun City Summerlin “pickleball champions” for their achievements. They are already starting the journey to qualify to play at the 2025 USA Pickleball National Championships.
