PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

Many homeowners in our community understand how the HOA functions and operates. But many others, especially newer residents, may not fully comprehend how we manage our 8,000-home development. Even those who have lived in other HOA’s may learn that Sun City Summerlin does things differently than where they previously owned a home.

First and foremost, we are a self-managed large-scale community. We are, in fact, the largest in Nevada and one of the largest in the United States. Unlike some HOAs that pay a management firm to administer it, we do it ourselves. We have our own paid staff to handle all departments, operations, and services. That offers a clear benefit over trying to communicate with a third-party service. The elected board of volunteers sets overall policy and direction, and our staff implements and manages daily operations.

One of the most important, in fact critical, ways we operate our community is through the several standing committees that we have. These committees, such as Finance, Common Area Properties, Golf, and others, are composed of volunteer homeowners who meet monthly. Very little gets done in our community without the input, review, research, and recommendation of these committees. By the time a matter gets to the Board, it has been thoroughly scrutinized and considered. Without this kind of support, the Board would spend hours in order to make informed decisions on matters.

With as large a population as Sun City Summerlin has (estimated at 12,000) we have an enormous resource of talented and knowledgeable residents. By using this expertise, along with their willingness to contribute, we all benefit from utilizing an important means to successfully operate our HOA. This is a resource that sets our community ahead of many others. And we are very fortunate to be able to draw on that knowledge base to operate our community.

If you truly want to be “in the know” about what is going on, what is being considered, and what will be moving forward to the Board, pay attention to the committee agendas and minutes. All committee meetings (except Executive and Hearings) are open to the public to attend in person or by Zoom. Agendas are published in advance of the meetings. The meeting schedule of the various committees can be found on the Link calendar or on the Sun City Summerlin website.

As with all our meetings, homeowners can make comments and ask questions on agenda items at the beginning of the meeting. And open comments are welcomed at the end of each meeting. The committee members and staff will consider resident input as they discuss and deliberate any item that is coming before them. We do not operate in a vacuum or behind closed doors. This is a very effective time for all points of view to be taken into consideration and for residents to give feedback on subject matter within the committee’s purview.

A Brief Primer on Idioms and Their Origins

When I saw an article a few months back in The Readers

Digest on idioms, I vaguely remember learning about them but couldn’t remember what they were. According to Webster’s Dictionary, idioms are words or phrases that aren’t meant to be taken literally. I thought you may enjoy some light summer reading, and maybe take you back down memory lane. Here are some examples of idioms and their origins.

Fly Off the Handle – Back in the day poorly made axe handles would fly off while in use, making them dangerous; thus, “flying off the handle” refers to risky behavior that leads to unpredictable results.

Chew the Fat – Originally a sailor’s term. With no refrigeration, ships carried salted pork which was mostly fat. Sailors ate it as a last resort while complaining the whole time.

Close but No Cigar – Late in the 19th century, carnival games were directed towards adults, not children. Prizes, if won, were usually cigars, even if the loser was very close to winning. In the 1930’s the phrase was extended to everyday close shots.

Steal Someone’s Thunder – In the early 1700’s, English writer John Dennis wrote a play and invented a device that imitated thunder for the production. The play flopped. But Mr. Dennis became aware of another playwright using his device. He exclaimed, “That is my thunder, by God, the villains will steal my thunder but not my play.” The story circulated throughout London and an idiom was born.

White Elephant – The kings of Siam (now Thailand) used to gift white elephants to people they wanted to get rid of. While the beast was considered valuable and respected, it also took a great deal of money for upkeep, and the kings hoped it would bring financial ruin upon the recipient. Now also known as a useless gift.

Give the Cold Shoulder – It didn’t originally refer to someone coldly dismissing a person. Rather it is believed to have come from medieval etiquette. In England, after great feasts, it was tradition for the host to serve a cold slice of mutton, pork or beef shoulder to indicate to guests that it was time to go home.

Let the Cat out of the Bag – In medieval markets, it is believed that piglets were sold to farmers in a bag for transporting home. Some shady sellers would replace the piglet with a less expensive animal, usually a cat. Once the bag was opened the con was exposed.

Use Your Head for Something Besides a Hat Rack – This was one of my mother’s favorite idioms. As an adult, I realize that it means to think in an intelligent, logical or clever manner. But children do think more literally, and I always imagined walking around with a hat rack connected to my neck; don’t ask how old I was before I figured out it was an idiom!

MILITARY AND FRIENDS CLUB: WHERE VETERANS GET SOCIAL!

Interview with Chris Oelerich, Club President

The club was started back in 1996 and currently has about 35 members, so-called “regulars.”

Meetings are social events and happen five times a year. “After COVID-19, we restructured into more of a social club where we share military stories, meet fellow veterans and have fun,” says Chris. The general meeting occurs in October (for elections and dues). The club plans to organize one or two outings during the year. Plans are in the works to attend a baseball game this summer.

“We have people coming to the meetings who do advocacy work for our club members who are primarily Vietnam Veterans. We also offer guidance in handling VA disability matters,” adds Chris.

Events follow a potluck format. Everyone brings food to share and enjoy each other’s company. There is entertainment at all club events (except for the June picnic since it is too hot to perform outdoors). All events are themed, and the tables are set up in advance. It’s BYOB.

The club from time to time invites guest speakers to talk to club members about, for example: Scams on Seniors what to watch out for. Or, security tips for your home (lighting, etc.).

For every upcoming event, club members receive a postcard in the mail. This format seems to work best reminding club members that an event is coming up (they put the postcard on their refrigerator!).

Chris wants club members to be well informed. He shared that Vet Tix is a great source for veterans. Vet Tix is a national non-profit organization offering veterans tickets for free or a low fee to attend local sporting events, concerts, and family outings. Go to: vettix.org to learn more.

If you are interested in joining the Military and Friends Club, please contact Chris Oelerich at: coelerich@yahoo.com.

“As I See It . . . ”

Lessons Worth Learning

Hopefully, we all learn things along our way through life. Some things are helpful and some things distract us from our mission. Still, wouldn’t it be a shame if, with the benefits of all our years, we have learned nothing . . . still the same person we were years ago? We learn from others, and we learn from our life experiences. The most important thing is, however, that we never “give up” – we never stop learning – we never keep trying to become the best person we can be.

4. Your Health Is Your Most Valuable Asset - Health is an invaluable treasure—always appreciate, nurture, and protect it. Good health is often wasted on the young before they have a chance to appreciate it for what it’s worth.

5. You Don’t Always Get What You Want - “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.” – John Lennon. Sometimes we have to flop to find the right course and sometimes we just have to try a few things before we find the right direction.

6. It’s Not All About You - It’s normal to be intensely aware of everything that’s going on in your own life, but you need to pay as much attention to what’s happening around you, and how things affect other people in the world as you do to your own life.

7. There’s No Shame in Not Knowing - No one has it all figured out. Nobody has all the answers. There’s no shame in saying “I don’t know.” Pretending to be perfect doesn’t make you perfect. It just makes you neurotic.

8. Love Is More Than a Feeling; It’s a Choice - We have to choose to let annoyances pass, to forgive, to be kind, to respect, to support, to be faithful.

9. Perspective Is a Beautiful Thing - Typically, when we’re worried or upset, it’s because we’ve lost perspective. It’s hard to see long term when all you know is short term, but unless it’s life-threatening, let it go, and move on.

There are so many lessons I wish I had learned while I was young enough to appreciate and apply them. The thing with wisdom, and often with life lessons in general, is that they’re learned in retrospect, long after we needed them. Here are 10 important life lessons we should learn early on:

1. Money Will Never Solve Your Real Problems - If you’re expecting the “stuff” you can buy to “make it better,” you will never be happy.

2. Pace Yourself - Slow down - don’t rush into things - Let your life unfold. Wait a bit to see where it takes you, and take time to weigh your options.

3. You Can’t Please Everyone - “I don’t know the secret to success, but the secret to failure is trying to please everyone” –Bill Cosby. You don’t need everyone to agree with you or even like you.

10. Don’t Take Anything for Granted - We often don’t appreciate what we have until it’s gone. Nothing in your life is guaranteed to be there tomorrow, including those you love.

This is a hard life lesson to learn, but it may be the most important of all:

Life can change in an instant. Make sure you appreciate what you have, while you still have it.

cognitive functions, but also regulates the secretion of melatonin, which has been associated with the mediation of circadian rhythms, improved sleep quality, and optimized physical and social activity in the elderly.

Sunlight Carries Risk of Skin Cancer

Damage to the skin, eyes, and immune system has been widely associated with long-term exposure to sunlight. According to the

When it comes to our health, we want easy answers. This is good, that is bad, and every morning take this to help that. Our health is much more complicated. There is a great debate over sunshine and how much sun exposure is beneficial or detrimental to our bodies. One day, you might read that sunlight is beneficial for older adults, providing a range of physical and mental health benefits. The next day, you might read that sunlight is harmful to seniors, putting you at risk for a range of conditions. The truth perhaps lies somewhere in the middle. There are both benefits and dangers to sunlight in older adults and it is important to understand how to keep us safe in the sun.

Sunlight Linked to Healthy Bones, Mood and Sleep

“The Impact of Sunlight Exposure on the Health of Older Adults” article from the National Library of Medicine says that appropriate exposure to sunlight not only contributes to the production of vitamin D, which has been associated with enhanced bone health, mood, and

Center for Disease Control and Prevention, most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. UV rays are an invisible kind of radiation that comes from the sun, tanning beds, and sunlamps.

Finding a Healthy Balance

Unfortunately, there’s no clear medical consensus on where the line between safe and unsafe exposure to sunlight lies. Dr. Robert S. Stern, Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Harvardaffiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center says the relationship between sun exposure and skin cancer risk isn’t as straightforward as you might think. As for exposure, the “dose” and its timing are crucial. Several studies have suggested that suddenly getting a lot of sun is more dangerous than steady exposure over time.

Nobody wants to get skin cancer, but we’ve gone from sun worship to sun dread. Dr. Stern and others say there is a middle way that includes using a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 when you’re outside for an extended period and wearing a hat and shirt around midday. The Sunlight Institute states that sunshine is natural and intended. Neither our planet nor we could live without it.

“Ain’t No One Paying Us To Be Out There . . . ”

We know roses are red, and the fairways are green –but there are those days, they are so seldom seen! As the sun’s coming up, the time...now close to dawnwe gulp down our coffee to stifle a yawn.

It’s off to the golf course - how it goes no one knows; the ‘golf-gods’ determine how well our game goes. We have all our gadgets, and we know what to do but it takes more than that if we don’t ‘follow-thorough’! There are noises we make when bending down to ‘tee’ up –at the end, fingers crossed – it might go in the cup. We line up on the Tee-box, and then give it a shot –we aimed for the fairway - where it lands, we know not. If we shank it or hook it, it could end up in the sand –so we need to decide – use a club or our hand. If it heads t’wards the water, we hope fate lends a hand and a miracle will find it stopping safely on land. But with that being said, do our shots really matter?

...only if the geese know it is now time to scatter! Our putts are too long or too short – yet our goal is to get it just right so it ends up in the hole. We have played in the wind, and we’ve played in the rain; in July, it’s so hot, it might just melt our brain. We could now pull a muscle, get cramps now and then, as we recall younger days and “remembering when”... Those days are long gone, but there’s good news ahead, we can now go back home and take a nap before bed!

Now that we’re getting older, and our zip seems to be gone –and our shots just don’t end up where we think they belong. Be it man, child or woman, in the end, it’s the same –we are there to enjoy as it’s only a game!

It’s the company we keep from beginning to end while traversing the course with other golfers - and friends! Just to share in a laugh when our round runs amuck –and that’s when our game shows we’ve just ‘run out of luck’. We know roses are red, and tumbleweed’s brown –so here’s to the golf balls never more to be found. When all’s said and done, it’s not about what we score‘cause’ as all golfers know, that’s what erasers are for!!

Highland Falls Poa (Bluegrass) Abatement Plan

We get quite a few questions and concerns about certain things happening on the golf courses throughout the years. Our biggest question currently is “what has happened to the Greens at Highland Falls?” I also believe that most golfers have heard the word Poa but there is definitely some confusion of what that Poa really is. During our Golf Oversight Committee meetings, Poa has been a topic of discussion and what should we do about the Poa population that we have been dealing with for the past couple years. Our plan has been discussed thoroughly during these Committee meetings with agreement of what maintenance should be done.

Poa annua is the scientific name for annual bluegrass. It is a cool season grass which means that it thrives in the spring and fall here in Las Vegas. Poa is a resilient grass that adapts very well to low cuts of height and wants to survive even here in the heat of the desert. Poa annua has a light green color and its number one identifier is the number of seeds that it produces. Each Poa plant can produce up to 3,000 seeds per year and, that seed is viable for up to 50 years in the soil and 5

years in the thatch. This is why one can think that we finally killed the Poa and then next spring – it’s back! The seeds are in the soils just waiting for the right environment to germinate and take over once again.

What is our Plan? There are chemicals and agronomic practices that we do to discourage and try and decrease the population of Poa annua plants so that it is manageable. Late winter and into early spring, we begin to apply plant growth regulators that will suppress seed head growth. Effective control

requires careful timing of the application of these products. Agronomic practices include light verticutting and sand topdressing on the Greens This is essential to help encourage the Bermuda grass or the “desired turf grass” so that it will out compete the Poa annua and take over. Watering practices are essential in controlling the Poa annua. Because Poa has shallow root zones, it likes frequent shallow watering. Bermuda grass has deep roots and so proper watering is a deep watering and more infrequent. Also, the heights of cut matter when dealing with Poa. If we are trying to encourage the Bermuda grass to grow in late spring and early summer, reducing the heights of cut hurts the cool season grasses and gets light and heat to the Bermuda plant to help it grow. Other chemicals are available that will kill the cool season grasses and will not harm the Bermuda.

The Greens are in a true transition, meaning, the cool season grasses are no longer alive. The Poa annua is dead as well as the winter overseed. The grass is beginning to fill in and as the weather continues to warm up, the greens will continue to fill in and once again be a great putting surface.

Honoring Residents Corner:

Amos Barcus is an outgoing, help your neighbor kind of guy. He greatly values the friendships he has made in our community. “They mean everything to me,” says Amos.

Amos was born and raised in Steubenville, Ohio for the first five years of his life. His family then moved to Toledo, Ohio where he lived until moving to Las Vegas to retire with his lovely wife, Rita.

While attending the University of Toledo, Amos met his wife to be, Rita. She was president of a sorority on campus. Amos was in a fraternity. They met in the cafeteria at the university. Amos admired her from afar. Rita always looked great and was very outgoing. They started dating and the rest is history.

Amos worked for JC Penney for 22 years in Ohio until the company decided to downsize its staff. Next, Amos was the national sales manager for a company that made drain cleaning equipment. He traveled all over the U.S., until the company downsized. Amos and Rita officially retired in 2008 and moved to Sun City Summerlin.

Amos reflects on moving here fifteen years ago: “You move here and get to meet lots of different people who come from diverse backgrounds. It’s like the first day of high school! You are starting all over again. It took us no time at all to meet people. Rita within the first week she got to know

10, 12, 14 couples. What a great community to live in!”

Amos is very involved in the community. He is President of the Guys and Gals Golf Club (for the past 10 years). There are about 180 club members. The Club just had their Championship this past weekend, followed by a great event at The Summit! The Club has a banquet twice a year and a holiday party.

Since 2012, Amos has served on the Common Area Properties (CAP) Committee. He is also involved with the Fitness Committee, since 2015 (thanks to Ken Caroccia). Amos enjoys being on these committees because he works with a tremendous group of people who care about the community. He expressed the importance of getting involved and being informed. Amos is quick to point out that he is always on the 4 p.m. Friday with Mitzi chat. “Those calls are so informative; they are truly spectacular!”

Amos shares this funny story: “It’s a standing joke with friends; they will say: ‘Come over at 5 p.m.’ I will say: ‘No, make it 5:10 p.m. because I am on Mitzi’s Friday chat!’ I just love her!”

Lastly, Amos congratulates our entire community: “We are the #1 HOA Community in Nevada! Hard work from everybody!” He is so very proud of Sun City Summerlin.

Amos nominates Chris Klee for the next article in this series: Honoring Residents Corner.

INTRODUCING: SCOTT STROMME SUN CITY SUMMERLIN BEEKEEPER

Scott Stromme joined the Sun City Summerlin Facilities Maintenance staff in April 2018. This year, Scott celebrated his fifth work anniversary.

Scott loves working with bees. There are times when bees pose a menace to the community and Scott steps in to save the day! Three or four times, Scott has been called to the rescue. When Scott retrieves them from the hive, he relocates them to his home garden (sometimes the relocation is not possible because the bees are not happy with the hive, and they abandon the hive).

The most recent bee incident was in front of the Fitness Center at Mountain Shadows. The bees had built a hive in a valve cover in front of the Fitness Center. Those bees Scott could not keep because they swarmed out to a bush and when he tried to smoke them out into a box, they took off. A couple of times, Scott has successfully gotten the bees to go into a box. Scott then transports them to his home. Currently, Scott does not have any bees at his home.

Scott has been doing beekeeping for about five years. He got interested because he hoped that bees would pollinate the flowering plants in his garden. They did. His first bee colony was in place for three years!

There are thousands of bees in one hive. If you go out and buy bees, you get a queen and a box of bees weighing about three pounds (2,000-3,000 bees!). The cost is about $173. Scott buys his bees from Harvest Lane Honey in Utah.

They ship them down here to the Cal Ranch Store.

Scott bought a kit when he first became interested in beekeeping. It came with a hive, a bunch of tools and the protective suit. The suit is hot! The bees typically start swarming in the springtime. In the winter, the bees hibernate in the hive. One of their defenses is to flap their wings very fast to heat up the hive and to also drive out outsiders (bugs and insects).

Right now, Scott is out of bees. Scott is hoping that anytime soon he will get another call from the community to remove a hive and then relocate it to his home.

Beehives can be anywhere. There is one at DV in the rock wall and it is way up about 25-30 feet. There is another one near where the fountain used to be, and it is underground. They like spots with a small entrance, so it is easy to guard and to build their honeycomb inside.

Scott has been stung a lot. He was stung on his face and his eyes swelled up. One time, Scott was stung five times on one hand. He found out that he is slightly allergic to bee stings.

On another occasion, Scott had on his beekeeper protective suit and the zipper was caught. One bee got in and flew around in the hood of his suit but did not sting Scott. He couldn’t get that hood off fast enough!

All in all, Scott respects and admires bees for all that they do to pollinate wildflowers, shrubs, fruit, and vegetables and for their production of honey.

Howard Shapiro Shares His Wish of a Lifetime!

Howard has lived in Sun City Summerlin since 2008. He belongs to the Pan Club, the Canasta Club, and the Theatre Club. He was President of the Theatre Club for the past 3 years (he is no longer President at this time).

Wish of a Lifetime is sponsored by AARP. People who are 65+ can ask to have a wish fulfilled. A friend of Howard’s who knows that he loves theatre and dreams of performing on Broadway (he is a bit shy asking for things for himself) entered his name for consideration. Howard received a call, was interviewed by an individual who was a theatre and arts teacher, who now works with Wish of a Lifetime. He passed on Howard’s information to AARP.

Wish of a Lifetime gets so many requests, it takes a while to receive feedback. Two months after the interview, Howard heard back and was thrilled to learn that his Wish of a Lifetime would be granted! Then, it was a few more months until he figured out what he would do onstage. Since Howard does not have an Equity membership to be on stage, the right event had to be found. The Director of the New York City (NYC) Education Department found the perfect event! Once a year, for one show, the NYC Education Department selects five of the best theatre departments from the NYC schools to perform for 15 minutes. He picked Howard, a senior person, theatre lover. He felt that it would be very interesting for these talented teenagers to have a senior person interact with them and share his life experience as well as perform onstage. The event was held at the Broadhurst Theatre on Broadway to a full house. Howard received an all-expense paid four-day trip to NYC and performed: “To Life, To Life, L’chaim.” He was introduced on stage by Danny Burstein (Danny is a Tony Award winner who played Tevye on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof.) Howard was over the moon, so thrilled with his once in a lifetime experience!

“What I told the teenagers, I want to tell our senior residents: If you have a wish, don’t wait for someday. Because someday doesn’t come unless you make it happen! This amazing experience would not have happened had my friend not done this for me. So, I am doing this for you...Do not wait! I am also volunteering to be an ambassador for residents who want to share their Wish of a Lifetime. Let me know,” says Howard.

Contact Howard if you are interested in learning more at: hshapiro1@gmail.com or visit: wishofalifetime.org.

SECURITYPATROL

You Might Be Able To Mark Off This List

There are so many crucial safety items for you and your neighbors. Can you help persuade folks to read and, more importantly, motivate them to follow at least a couple?

Ÿ Please fill out the Emergency Contact (blue) sheet. If you haven’t revised yours in a number of years, please update. Under contacts to call in case of emergency, be sure to have a local person who you trust with permission to enter your home. We cannot emphasize the importance of this initial task enough. Pick up your blue sheet at the Security Patrol office.

Ÿ Look at the address numbers on your home. Are they easy to read, is the light working? If you do not go out after the sun goes down, ask a neighbor to check the light for you.

Ÿ Turn on your porch light after dark. That may be the one thing that deters someone looking to do harmful things.

Ÿ Check your shrubbery. Is it covering your address sign, are there places that might obscure an individual up to no good? Could be time to clear out the excess.

Ÿ Begin a new habit of running through a list before bedtime. Is your garage door closed, are all doors and windows locked and secure? If you have an alarm system, is that set appropriately? Do you have a phone, either landline or cell, close by for emergencies? If your car is parked outside, is it locked up tight with no items in sight in the interior?

Ÿ Do you have your personal information written for our great fire and rescue folks if needed? Security Patrol has “Vial of Life” packets to help guide you in the necessary information to grab at a moments’ notice.

Ÿ Are you going to be out of your home for a few days or longer? Security Patrol has a house check program where one of the members does a walkaround of your property every other day. They check all windows and doors, move unexpected packages out of sight, and note any changes from normal. If there should be any problems, they contact the owner or others as directed by the owner. The paper-

work (of course there is paperwork), must be done a few days ahead of your departure. The process is speedy and thorough, particularly if you have your Emergency Contact (blue) sheet already in the system.

Ÿ There are a myriad of other safety equipment available to purchase. Video doorbells can be handy and easy to access without having to open the door to a visitor. Security Patrol also has “No Soliciting” signs for you to use. There is safety film you can have applied to your windows, or you could use the shutters that totally cover your windows and doors.

Ÿ Las Vegas Metro has community specialists that will give you a hand in identifying safety issues. And of course, your Sun City Summerlin Security Patrol is on duty every day, all day and every night, all night. They will answer your call and also encourage you to help by being extra eyes and ears of our community. These volunteers want to keep all of our residents safe!

SUBH.O.A.LIST

(This is the most recent information reported to Sun City Summerlin Community Association, Inc., by the Sub-Associations.)

I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get up!

We’ve all seen this comment, but the second part “If no one else is home, the firemen will have to use axes to get themselves into the house,” is the frightening ending to the story. This past summer, I was living this nightmare because my wife and I both had strokes. Thus, we were often alone, and I had to find a practical way of solving the situation.

I had to let the fire department into the garage and into the main house without having the doors or the walls destroyed. It wasn’t difficult, just some slight modifications to my home. First, I found a free app that would open and close my garage door. Then I had the inner door lock replaced with an electric door lock. I put all these apps on my phone (I must always carry my phone) in a cluster. It worked great and only cost me $200!

Three weeks ago, I relived the nightmare. I fell on the concrete floor I heard my head hit the floor. I was prepared! As I got my composure. I took out my cell phone and called my neighbor, Mark. I asked him to come over because I had fallen, and then I heard him outside, I opened the garage door so he could get in. I opened the inner door and asked

him to get me an ice pack from the fridge and we put in on my head (it was so fast there was no bump). He then got some large throw pillows to help me get up and make me more comfortable. I couldn’t get up, but with some quick action, I was on my way to U.M.C. within fifteen minutes and my wife, who I called from the ambulance even beat me to the hospital. Just a little planning and $200!

Just think, if you hadn’t planned ahead, you could be lying on the concrete floor for hours!

LIGHT TABLE TENNIS

“Through the Years”

The SCSCAI Table Tennis Club is celebrating 30 years as a Chartered Club of the Sun City Summerlin Community. It all began in 1993 when Murray Waks and Ernie Block found 25 friends and neighbors who, like them, had a love for the game of ping pong. In fact, the original name of the club was the Sun City Ping Pongers. Through the years, the Club’s name was changed to the SCSCAI Table Tennis Club.

The Ping Pongers initially played at Desert Vista, but when the Pinnacle was being built, Ernie and Murray met with the construction manager and together they designed a Multipurpose Room that would accommodate four tables.

Through the years, many residents have enjoyed the fellowship and health benefits of playing table tennis. These include improved hand-eye coordination and mobility as well as the opportunity to establish new friendships.

The Club has grown to a membership that now stands at 89. It has been supported by a dedicated line of past presidents who have worked to ensure the Club’s success. They are Ernie Block, Murray Waks (Honorary Lifetime Member), Wes Wilcox, Marilyn Rogers, George Konrad, Jerome Carter, Jeff McCabe, Bob Swanson, Jim Ko and Laureen Lentz.

Through the years, the Club has held an annual picnic in the fall. This year’s Founders Day Picnic will be held on October 7th and will commemorate 30 years of table tennis in Sun City Summerlin.

Through the years, Club members have played as long as their bodies held up. Some moved to be with family and others have passed away, but they are not forgotten. They are missed. For more information, contact Marilyn at: 702-849-6092.
