Why Do They Do What They Do?

more including the Security Patrol Board of Directors from the Chief on down. These are all volunteers! They are not the police; they are “Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” which just happens to be the Patrol motto.

Then there is the unwritten element of becoming a new part of a very big family. After meeting and training with fellow Patrol members, you realize that they are not only co-workers, but a special support system through the coming years. Many deep friendships develop during the hours spent doing the various tasks of helping the community and your neighbors to feel safe. The Security Patrol base becomes an important part of your life. If you should need help with a project or just someone to talk with, you needn’t look very far for a friendly ear.

When a newly retired person decides to move from the ole homestead to a community full of folks their age, they usually have done a lot of research. They also do a lot of soul searching. They may shed some tears. They say hundreds of good-byes. After packing, shipping, and unpacking their lives, many take pause to hope they have done the right thing.

Let’s say Sun City Summerlin is their choice of community. There are attractive homes, well-kept streets and landscaping, beautiful golf courses and wonderful community centers. All of a sudden they have time. Time has always been in short supply when growing a family and making ends meet. And then they find the hidden secret; the wonderful folks who have become their neighbors.

A number of new residents realize they may want to use their past life experiences to make a difference in our community. Some residents take a bit longer to see the possibilities to help the community. Some folks just want to find their way around without being constantly lost. Sun City Summerlin Security Patrol could be the activity for any of them.

There are Patrol cars on the 70 plus miles of Sun City Summerlin streets all day, every day. That means overnight, windy days, cold days, rainy days, very hot days, and holidays. There are Patrol members in the three Information Centers at entrances to Sun City Summerlin during daylight hours. Dispatchers are manning the phones at Security Patrol base while a myriad of support members make certain everything keeps running smoothly. The Watch Commanders keep the Patrol working efficiently, along with the trainers, social committee, timekeepers, car wash crew and so many

Come to base (far end of Desert Vista Community Center parking lot), or flag down a driver to gather first-hand information from those who are members. The patrol has a brilliant “ride-a-long” program that gives potential members a chance to actually accompany a patrol officer during a shift. Bring your Association ID card and we will schedule one for you. It could take your life in a whole, new direction!
