PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A

s we approach the time of year when residents consider running for the Board of directors (of either the master or a sub-HOA) it is appropriate to explore what it means to be on a Board. The Community Associations Institute (CAI) has a very useful publication titled “The Board Member Tool Kit”. One of its chapters is on the Role of the Board. That chapter details what makes a strong Board member and what makes an inappropriate Board member. So, let’s explore that a bit. CAI says a strong Board member has calm judgement, a willingness to serve, good character, relevant experience, and strong integrity. A key component is to be committed to the best interests of the community as a whole. They go on to state an inappropriate Board member is unable to put the welfare of the community first. They work behind the Board to run things their own way. They are unable to work with others for the common good and have poor interpersonal skills. It is also important to know the difference in the roles of the Board and the management of the community. Boards set policy and make policy decisions. The Executive Director and staff (or a sub-HOA management company) implement the Board’s directives and take care of operations. Only decisions and directions made by the entire Board constitute the marching orders for staff. Collectively, the Board determines how the HOA should operate. Healthy discussion and debate are appropriate. The Board is not a rubber stamp for proposals or decisions. Divisive, accusatory, and personal comments are not helpful in determining the decisions of the Board. Once items are decided and voted on, all directors should move forward together. The role of the Board is as much about building the social and civic well-being of the community as it is about maintaining common areas or enforcing rules. To do this a Board must provide leadership and inspiration, not just administration. It should instill a sense of caring, community pride, and shared responsibility for all. By placing an emphasis on community, Boards transcend the legalistic nature of their governing documents. It is important for Board members to remember that they have a serious responsibility to serve the community, not their own egos. It’s important for Boards to focus on setting policy and leave the implementation of those polices to the manager and staff. Being a Board member takes a commitment to work for the community. As is often the case, there can be a wide range of opinions and discourse from residents. By following the guideline of acting in the best interest of the community, individuals who serve should be confident that they are fulfilling the responsibility they were elected for. If you are involved in the community and interested in serving on a Board, you should consider running for John Berthelsen, election. Please continue to let us know your questions, President Sun City Summerlin concerns, and thoughts about our community. Board of Directors

Sun City Summerlin Community Association, Inc. (SCSCAI) Elections News Mike Christiansen, Election Committee Chair

We live in arguably the finest retirement community in the entire country. With four community centers, three golf courses, three restaurants and 90 plus organizations or clubs available to join, we have a good life. You could say we live in a city within a city. To keep our community running efficiently we have a Board of Directors made up of SCSCAI Owners who are elected to serve a three-year term. The election process for next year’s Board of Directors starts in November. You may be thinking of giving something back to this great community of ours. If so, you might want to consider running for the SCSCAI Board of Directors. If you are interested, you may nominate yourself as a candidate by submitting a letter of intent, Owner or Trustee Disclosure Form, and your Biography for publication. The forms for these items (except for your Biography) can be picked up at the Monitor Station at the Mountain Shadows Community Center. Self-nominations must be received by 5:00 p.m., November 30 and following review and confirmation of the disclosure information by the SCSCAI attorney, your name will be placed on the

ballot. It is the responsibility of the Election Committee to ensure these elections are fair, follow all laws and Association rules are transparent to the residents of Sun City Summerlin. The 2024 Sun City Summerlin Election Committee consists of Garry Garcia, Ruth Mintz, Melanie Spector, Sofia Castille, and Mike Christiansen as Chairperson of the Committee. The goal of the committee is to ensure a transparent, fair, and open election, to ensure the integrity of the election and that the campaign rules are observed, and to count the election ballots at the annual meeting in February. Over the next several weeks, you will be hearing Sun City Summerlin Election News. As with any election voting is important, and we look forward to a strong response from our community. The names of the candidates will be revealed in early December and there will be a “Meet the Candidates” event, sponsored by the Residents’ Forum, which will be held in January 2024. Ballots and an information packet which will include information about each candidate, as prepared by the candidate, will be mailed to every homeowner in mid-January. Detailed information about how to vote will be included in the information packet along with your ballot.

For the past twenty-nine years, Sun City Summerlin has taken part in this nationwide campaign promoted by the U.S. Marine Corps. This toy drive benefits needy children here in Las Vegas. Sun City Summerlin residents and employees have participated each year to help this wonderful cause and have donated thousands of gifts. If you would like to take part in this year’s Toys for Tots drive, you can drop off a new, unwrapped gift now at Mountain Shadows, Desert Vista, Sun Shadows or Pinnacle Community Centers until Friday, December 15, 2023. If you prefer, you can donate on the website at las-vegas-nv.toysfortots.org. Go to the bottom of the page to Virtually donate! and click You Give Goods or go to the Amazon Wishlist to make your donation. When you begin your holiday shopping this year, think about spreading the holiday cheer and pick up a little something extra for a needy child. Thank you!

AARP sponsors an important program in Sun City Summerlin to prepare income tax returns for residents. Each return is prepared by a trained counselor and reviewed by an experienced volunteer to assure a high standard of quality service. This program e-filed over 675 returns last year. We need your help. Volunteers should have some knowledge of income tax rules and some computer skills. You will be required to attend a one-week tax course and pass an open book proficiency exam. You will need to contribute at least four hours weekly during the tax season. Mountain Shadows will be open on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from the beginning of February until April 15th. If you would like to volunteer, you can register online at http://www.nvtaxaide.org. Please respond back before December 1st. A Great American Humorist Will Rogers

A

fter the challenges of these last few years, it is my hope that this holiday season will be lighter and more jovial in nature. To that end, I’ve decided to write about Will Rogers whose birthday, November 4th, has been designated as a day of honor according to the “Farmer’s Almanac.” Much of this article is peppered with his wholesome quotes that I thought were especially humorous. As a child, the only thing I remember about Will Rogers was the one quote my great uncle always used to say, “I never met a man I didn’t like.” Will Rogers liked that quote so much he wanted it carved on his tombstone! Part Cherokee, Will Rogers was born on November 4, 1879, in the territory of the Cherokee Nation in what would become Oklahoma. It has been said that it was a former slave who taught him to use a lasso to work Texas longhorn cattle. He became a rope-tricking cowboy and all-around entertainer, his rope tricks eventually leading to a career on Broadway and in the movies. Rogers later became a popular broadcaster and syndicated newspaper columnist. I feel many of Will Roger’s quotes are timeless, and here’s a few that you might enjoy: “When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car.” “I don’t make jokes; I just watch the government and report the facts.” “Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.” “We can’t all be heroes, because somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by.”

“Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” Some fun facts about Will Rogers: He traveled three times around the world. He made 71 films, 50 of which were silent films. He was the highest paid of Hollywood film stars at that time. By the 1930’s Rogers and his political wit became popular with mainstream America; he had a gift for poking fun on every subject without anyone taking offense. Rogers was a Democrat but has historically been known as apolitical supporting at times both Republican and Democratic candidates. Concerning the Government, regardless of who had the power, Rogers joked, "Lord, the money we do spend on Government and it's not one bit better than the Government we got for one-third the money twenty years ago.” Rogers thought all campaigning was bunk. To prove the point, he mounted a mock campaign in 1928 for the presidency. His only vehicle was the pages of Life, a weekly magazine. Rogers ran as the "bunkless candidate" of the Anti-Bunk Party. His campaign promise was that, if elected, he would resign. On election day he declared victory and resigned (he did not actually receive any state electoral votes). Through Rogers’ hard work and success, he symbolized the self-made man, the common man, who believed in progress and in the American Dream of upward mobility. In today’s world, I surely wish there were more like him! Rogers died in a plane crash in Point Barrow, Alaska, on August 15, 1935. By Molly Sher/Link

unique bite. Too much? Well, I just don’t want to take life for “As I granted and MISS living each moment. As in the photo to the See It . . . ” left, LIFE IS A SHORT TRIP.

Time and Beauty

By Alan G. Spector / Link

Nowadays, I receive clippings, photos, and sayings from many folks. My admiration for wisdom, appreciation of all things clever, and great respect for the emotional/spiritual. I recently received this poignant graphic. Certainly, the first thing that comes to mind is the obvious message... “Live today, because the future is all too short and inevitable.” I get

that. Certainly, we all must live each day as if it was precious, with no guarantee of another. Of late, I have been making a conscious effort to “take in” each thing in my life... to take no blessing for granted... to value the “small things” on equal par with the “big things”. I don’t just look at the flowers in my back yard... I try to take the time to go over to them, REALLY look at them... the marvel at how they are created... of how they smell. I observed, one day, that it felt reassuring each time I took a step and felt the floor beneath me. I try not to rush my meal, rather savoring the taste, texture, and smell of each 3 8 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

BUT, I looked at the photo again. What I REALLY saw was the beauty of the old woman. I looked closely at all the wisdom in those eyes and all the accomplishment in those wrinkles. As in the photo, she was adorable as a young child, but NOW she is magnificent. I could feel her kindness, her joyful outlook, and her caring and thoughtfulness. Some in our society look at “age” and “old” as inevitable downsides of the years passing. When I saw this photo, and thought of so many folks I know, I saw BEAUTY. You know... the kind of people we love to be around... the kind of people who are beautiful on the inside and the outside. The kind of people who always make us feel great after being with them. Just as an example, SCS is full of people like this. It is one of the best aspects of living here... the beautiful, wonderful people who make SCS so special. Our birth was not in our control. We arrived. BUT, life is a decision. What we do with our life IS our decision. Be a grump or be joyful. Frown or let the beauty shine. Get all you can or share your gifts with others. The lady in this photo, brings us a great message. The beauty inside of all of us can be an inspiration to the young and make the world so much attractive and worthwhile. Undoubtedly, this lady has had challenges and bumps on her road, but she kept her “beauty” throughout her life. Think about how much happier her life has been because she openly let her “beauty” be seen and shared with others. I really want to meet the lady in this photo... but then again, I live in SCS and I see the best parts of her in just about everyone I meet. My choice is to see the “beauty” in people... in the world... and in this lady’s incredible face. I want to make the “little boy” in my own photo proud of what I did with my life so he has something GREAT to look forward to. BTW, the wonderful person who sent me this thoughtful photo is also the “beautiful” person I am sharing my life with... thanks, honey.

Honoring Residents Corner: Beverly “Bev” Pini by Beverly Pini / Resident What Bev Wants You to Know: Sun City Summerlin is a perfect location for Bev’s greatest skill – collecting people. She still gets Christmas cards from her Brownies, cards and emails from every neighborhood, job, club, committee, alumni group she’s ever participated in. Bev says, “Once you’re in my clutches there’s no turning back.” Where Bev Grew up: Bev grew up in Dormont, PA, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Dormont was a charming community where everyone knew everyone else. Her Dad was big in Little League and her Mom in politics so she came from a culture of inclusion and thinks that’s where her “people person” attitude originated. Paid vs Volunteer! While serving as PTA Council President, Girl Scout Leader, Sunday School teacher, etc., Bev was Controller of an import firm servicing Dick’s and Walmart. “I loved that job even though I had failed every math course I’d ever taken.” Bev’s Little Family: Bev & Bill enjoying retirement. COMMUNITY STANDARDS ARC Applications Apply To Everyone, Everything, Every Time!

The Community Standards Office approves more than 1200 home project Applications for Owners each year---some large, some small. As with any HOA, residential project Applications are a critical piece of Sun City Summerlin’s toolkit to maintain home values and to assure all Owners that the curb appeal and aesthetics of the community are being promoted. The Application process serves several purposes, among them to provide a registry of upgrades and historical records for our 7781 homes, and, especially, to assure that only permitted projects are undertaken. The recently published Development Standards are in place as a critical guide to all residents. The Standards go hand-inhand with the Application Approval and Project Inspection processes. It is safe to say that those who by-pass applying for their projects will face violation notices. The Application process is “as easy as it gets” and becomes easier if you provide project details that help us to avoid approval delays. Architectural Review Committee members are available to assist Owners with projects of any size before or during a project. Working out the kinks ahead of time can save valuable time and money and expedite a satisfying outcome. We remind all that applying for projects is required of any change that is contemplated for the exterior of your home. 4 6 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

There is no easy way to say this, but applying for a project “up-front” gives assurances that one will not be blind-sided by an expensive order to remove or rebuild something that was not applied for. In Service Of Our Nation: Military K-9 Dogs By Gail Abrams / Link Military K-9 dogs have played a crucial role in combat going back to ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. Since the birth of our Nation, Military Service Dogs (known as: MSDs) have served in combat with U.S. Soldiers. In early conflicts, they were trained as lookouts and message carriers. In more recent times, MSDs are critical team members skilled in a wide variety of tasks. Few dog breeds have the social skills and traits to become a Military Service Dog. Traditionally, most MSDs are sourced from Germany and the Netherlands. The most qualified breeds include the large, muscular German Shepherd, as well as the strong, compact Belgian Malinois. The Labrador Retriever is also favored for its keen sense of smell. Dogs are generally placed in foster homes at 8-10 weeks to learn basic socialization skills. At 7-9 months, they are assessed for key traits: strong drive, positive response to commands, and adaptability to different situations. Roughly half of the dogs trained are chosen to serve. There are more than 2,500 active MSD’s, each training with its own handler. On average, these dogs serve 8-9 years and then retire. Many are then adopted by their handler.

Famous dogs include: In World War I, bull terrier mix Stubby, was decorated for his heroic service, and invited to the White House on two occasions. Rin Tin Tin, a German Shepherd was rescued during the Great War and brought back stateside by an American soldier. He became a famous movie star in the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, a German Shepherd by the name of Chips, served as a sentry in Western Europe, North Africa, and Sicily, and was the most highly decorated MSD. Modern MSD’s do it all; detect bombs and drugs with their keen sense of smell, track and neutralize insurgents, stand guard, and even attack. They must be focused, courageous, loyal, and aggressive, if necessary. Did you know that Military Service Dogs are noncommissioned officers? To prevent mistreatment, an MSD is designated one rank higher than its handler. The relationship between the handler and the dog is based on mutual respect. Military Service Dogs are active in most branches of the armed forces. We are grateful for their service and commitment to protecting our Nation both at home and abroad.

November 15th is “National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day” – You Have Time . . .

OK – The Holidays are coming, but are you ready? There may be a few of you who have a refrigerator that looks like a Martha Stewart home, but many of us can open our fridge and be just a tad frightened. We may find potatoes or onions sprouting a secondary growth or open Tupperware to find something we can no longer identify and the beginnings of ‘penicillin’. For me, the only reason I have a kitchen is because it came with the house, but I DO know milk should not be chunky and leftovers should NOT be furry! But why stop there – the kitchen is full of gadgets that may have parts missing or we’ve forgotten what it does. Open the pantry – cans should not be growing a goiter on the lid. Crackers should crack, not bend, and expiration dates are not merely a suggestion. We have closets full of clothes we move from one season to another, knowing in our hearts, those jeans we used to zip up with the help of a pair of pliers we will never get into again, and those shirts we could not button, STILL don’t button. Those high heels we once looked good in – are now hazardous to our health. Bathrooms have tubes of stuff we think we can get one more squeeze out of – unidentifiable pill bottles with either something for us or meds we kept for our dog or cat. Thankfully, most of us do not have attics or basements we know would be one more place to keep things we’ve forgotten about. Garages are meant for cars – not the vacuum that broke 10 years go. Are we saving every Amazon box for gifts we may have to mail before the Holidays? There might be a box of old gifts we received that made us say, “What WERE they think5 0 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

ing...?” Our ‘offices” my have drawers with pens that no longer write, broken rulers, papers not yet filed, receipts that are illegible, thumb drives we have no idea what’s on them, or charging cords we can’t untangle, let alone remember what they plugged into. There’s probably a box full of pictures of people we don’t know or a few we would just as soon forget. Heaven only knows what we would find hiding in that gym bag or golf bag! So why not get ready now, finding someplace to put that container of left-over green bean casserole, or that one lone piece of pumpkin pie; those pants you could not get over your hips even before the Holidays festivities need to go. I’ve sometimes watched the show, “Hoarding” and think, I’m not that bad...yet! I think we could go into any room, any drawer or closet, and think “I should go through that”... and that’s where it usually ends. We know what they say about ‘good intentions”, so, why not start with the refrigerator? It will fill up again before you know it with zip-lock bags or plastic containers, the closets will most likely have clothes we keep hoping will either fit or come back into style, and tubes of toothpaste will continue to have one more squeeze left in them. Before the Holiday season begins, at least for a time, we may feel as if we’ve accomplished something, short lived though it may be. You may never make it through the kitchen into another room, but it’s By Patti Tripp/ a place to start. Link

SALUTE TO U.S. AIR FORCE VETERAN: SUSAN GARCIA By Gail Abrams / Link Susan and her husband Patrick have been residents of Sun City Summerlin since 2017. For the past five years, Susan has been a member of Security Patrol serving as a driver on the early morning shift. Having served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years (from 1984-2006), Susan began her career doing basic training in San Antonio where she met Patrick who was also on active duty. They have been married 36 years and have known each other for 39 years. Following basic training, Susan worked at the White House for six years, then went to Phoenix and on to Italy for four years, among other assignments. Her Dad was in the Air Force for 20+ years. She was born at Homestead Air Force Base but was raised all over the country. Her Dad was in aircraft maintenance, which meant that the family moved every 2 to 3 years. After high school, Susan worked as a medical secretary. She was encouraged by her co-workers to go to college and study to become a Registered Nurse. But she decided instead to join the Military (and go to college at a later date). Susan called her Dad from basic training in San Antonio. “Hi, Dad. I’m in basic training in the Air Force. I knew that Dad would try to talk me out of it. So, I waited until I was in basic training to tell him. Dad did not want me to join the Military. He did not speak to me for about a year! And, then he came around and told me that it was the right decision.” For Susan, the military taught her responsibility at a young age, and they expected her to live up to that responsibility. “I credit my military career with setting me up for success!”, says Susan. Susan retired from the Air Force in 2006 as a Senior Master Sergeant. She got her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English. First, she was a technical editor for Southern Nevada Water Authority. Then, she worked as a technical editor at Nellis Air Force Base. In 2018, Susan decided to go out on her own working one-onone with government contractors. She has been running her own freelance business doing technical editing on business proposals, business plans, reports, and newsletters. Susan shares a story Link readers will enjoy: “While I was working at the White House (I was there for the last two years of Reagan’s presidency and all four years of Herbert Walker Bush’s presidency). Part of my job was to set up communications at the White House and anywhere we traveled. We traveled with the President and/or Vice President about 180 days every year. When Gorbachev first came to the U.S. in 1987 to meet with Reagan at the White House, my husband called me. Patrick was working at Andrews Air Force Base. He was trying to get ahold of me to let me know that he had seen Gorbachev’s motorcade go by! I called him back and he told me how excited he was to see the motorcade. Where were you? I really did not want to tell him that I was standing on the South Lawn at the White House watching Gorbachev’s speech! He has never let me live that down! It was a wonderful time!” Susan has led an exciting life! She has served our Nation with pride and patriotism. Thank you for your service, Susan! 5 8 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

A LIFE OF SERVICE: U.S. NAVY HOSPITAL CORPSMAN SHIRLEY THOMPSON By Shirley Thompson, Resident Shirley and her husband Jim, both Navy Veterans, have lived in the community for three years. They joined the SCS Patrol in June 2023. Shirley grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After one year at the University of New Mexico and not yet ready for the rigors of college life, Shirley instead joined high school friends and enlisted in the Navy in 1974. The best advice early on, and that surfaced regularly, was from a family friend, retired Air Force Colonel Pilot and 7month Prisoner of War, Major Ed Tinker. Ed encouraged Shirley not to join with expectations in mind, but to stay open to it all. Accept every experience. He shared an important life lesson, especially knowing he had been a POW. Following boot camp in Florida and with no expectations, Shirley was undesignated. She was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Meridian, Mississippi to work a flight line. The training squadron had hundreds of men and 3 women, 2 on the flight line. Among other duties, Shirley learned how to inspect T-2 trainer jets and taxi them to and from the runway. Eventually Shirley could fly back seat in maintenance hops. After one year the Line Chief told Shirley, “You are going to get out of the Navy and you will be right back where you started, not knowing what you want to do.” He recommended Corps School, “there are hospitals everywhere.” Shirley left for Hospital Corps training in San Diego. Stationed at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, Shirley was again asked what she wanted to do and again the answer was she didn’t know. She was assigned to ICU so she could “see it all”. Shirley admits the 17-month assignment was very, very difficult. The Corpsmen were supervised by USN Officer RN’s that Shirley still recalls as the best RN’s she has ever worked with. Following discharge, Shirley and Jim moved to California. The ICU experience qualified her to take the California licensed practical nurse exam, then working as an LPN until completing an RN. It was a slow but steady process while using the GI Bill and raising 3 children. Shirley retired after 30 years of registered nursing and 45 years of hospital-based work. Looking back on her life, Shirley remarks that there was always someone who took notice of her and offered sound advice. Her mom and dad were especially proud of Shirley’s military service. Her dad left her his WWII cap before his death at age 96. Shirley shares a story with Link readers: When Shirley worked the flight line, she received additional training in Pensacola, Florida, to ride on maintenance hops. Training included simulated ejections from the aircraft. The force of the ejection was quite a ride! “On the flight, it is full gear, including a G-suit, a flight suit worn for the acceleration force. When the suit inflates you feel your insides staying where they’re supposed to stay!” Shirley recalls one ride and the pilot 6 0 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

2022; A military bond between father & daughter; Dad a WWII Veteran asking for more airtime, taking her on the joy ride of a lifetime. They went high and came down in a nose-dive spin! What she remembers is the seeing blue of the sky and the green of the Mississippi fields at the same time. The blue and green were spectacular. To this day her prayer to the good Lord is “When I die, let me still see colors!” Early on, having worked in her parent’s restaurant and throughout her professional life, Shirley learned the spirit of service. In the military it is all about service. She remarks, “Now in Security Patrol, while there are policies and procedures, without someone’s desire to be of service, they don’t carry the weight that they would otherwise”. She observes patrol volunteers going the extra mile…It is all about service.

ROSEMARY “ROZI” HEREDY: PROUDLY BALANCING FAMILY LIFE &AND HER AIR FORCE CAREER By Gail Abrams / Link Rozi and her husband, Laszlo have lived in Sun City Summerlin for 11 years. Both volunteer with Security Patrol as drivers. Rozi also serves as supply officer, keeping Security Patrol wellstocked with office supplies and treats for the volunteers. Her parents left Hungary in 1956 and emigrated to the U.S., settling in Ohio. Rozi was born in Ohio two years later. Her family moved to Los Angeles when Rozi was just 10 months old. Rozi met her husband to be in 1981 in Los Angeles. While in the ROTC, Rozi decided to do her 6 weeks of basic training at Rickenbacker Air Force Base in Ohio (where she was raised).

She also completed her ROTC. Her first assignment was in Los Angeles where she worked at the Los Angeles Air Force Base which is located by El Segundo. As a Reservist, Rozi was assigned to the Pentagon. One of the senior officers asked Rozi about her background. She told him that her parents spoke Hungarian at home and that she had attended a boarding school in Germany for four years where classes were taught in German and Hungarian. When he found out that Rozi spoke four languages, he said: “Why are you in contracting and procurement…? You should be working in intelligence! We are sending you to Hungary.” At that time, she was a Lieutenant Colonel. Rozi served in Hungary for six months in 1995. She remembers that it was not the ideal timing for this assignment. Her husband was not in the military, and they had four young children ranging in age from 5 to 12. However, with her husband’s support and the help of a housekeeper, Rozi was able to take the assignment. Hungary was coming off communism and trying to break into the democratic system, they needed help. Promotion to Full Colonel While overseas, Rozi was introduced to an officer in Austria who asked her if she spoke German. The officer was looking for a female officer who spoke German to come to Austria to address a joint association about women in the military. When he learned that Rozi spoke German, he said: “Give us the Rozi story!” Rozi delivered her speech in German and then participated in a 30-minute question and answer session. A couple of months later, Rozi got a call that they were going to do an article about her in the January 1997 issue of The Officer (the Reserve Officers Association publication). At the time of Rozi’s speech in Austria, The flag folded up in the shadow box is described in this document. 6 2 | L I N K M A G A Z I N E |

Parliament was in a heated debate whether to allow women in the armed forces. In attendance at Rozi’s speech was a woman who served in Parliament who was against women in the military. She was charmed by Rozi’s remarks to the point that she changed her vote! Rozi was promoted to Full Colonel and was placed in a General Officer position and worked in that capacity for six years before retiring. From 1979 until 2008, Rozi served in the Air Force, six years active duty and 23 years in the Reserves. Reflecting on her military career, Rozi remarks: “I was a part of a new breed of women in the Military. I had a husband, a family and had to juggle both and not just dedicate herself to an Air Force career.” Now that she is retired, Rozi attends Dance Connection classes and loves playing Mah Jongg and Canasta. Rozi loves living here and has talked friends and military cohorts into moving here. “This is the BEST place to retire to. The clubs, the facilities, I love them all. I am a walking advertisement for Sun City Summerlin.” Shadow Box of Rozi’s career and medals
