Our Amenities and Services in Sun City Summerlin
We as residents/owners in Sun City Summerlin enjoy a wide variety of amenities. All these amenities require maintenance and at times new equipment whether it be a piece of equipment in the gym or a lawn mower for our landscaping crew.
We all agreed when we purchased our homes to pay an equal annual assessment in order to pay for all of our services, and to maintain all of our amenities and assets in excellent condition. The majority of your annual assessment is used to bring them all to revenue neutral (zero-sum) at the end of a fiscal year. Only a few of these amenities generate revenue in an attempt to offset their expenses. This is known as an amenity fee and is common practice in communities like ours. Food and Beverage (The Summit and The Tavern at The Falls), Community Services, The Link and Golf all generate revenue as we charge our owners (or advertisers for The Link) an additional fee to enjoy these amenities. All other amenities in Sun City Summerlin are enjoyed at NO additional expense to our residents.
All of our owners should look at our annual assessment as an investment in your home. This assessment keeps our community in great shape and a portion is also used to fund our reserves and new capital. Doing this helps keep our real estate values as high as possible.
On page 5, you will find a summary of our various amenities/services and their respective costs to all of us as homeowners for FY2024.
We should ALL be happy that we have three (3) amenities that generate revenue to help offset most of their operating expense. These three (3) amenities are Community Services, Food and Beverage, and Golf. In FY2024 they generated $8,199,646 in revenue to help offset their expenses. Some in the community argue that these are not amenities, when in fact they are. Instead of complaining we should ALL be thankful that many of our residents love these amenities and financially support them. If we allowed these three (3) amenities to be used free of charge like ALL of our other amenities each homeowner would have paid an additional $87.82 per month towards their annual assessment.
Food and Beverage has improved both their quality of food and their service in the past couple of years. They continue to offer new menu items, and both have added special events and various types of entertainment for all of us to enjoy. Community Services offers several different types of entertainment most appearing in the Starbright Theatre at very reasonable prices. I would encourage all of you to get and enjoy a meal and/or a show. Your support will be appreciated, and it will help us provide a larger offset to their operating expense. Our three (3) golf courses are the single biggest asset in our community that drives our property values. This community can’t thank our entire Golf Operations Staff and our residents that support golf enough. In FY2019 it cost each resident $29.16 a month to Golf to revenue neutral. The cost per month for each for Fy2024 has been reduced to $12.94. This represents savings of

$16.22 per month per homeowner which is $1,515,000 in annual operating expenses.
This is a great community to live in. We are rated at “The Top of The Heap” in the nation for active adult age restricted communities. In 2023 we were awarded the 2022 Outstanding Master Association of the State of Nevada. These awards did not happen by accident and we all should be proud of them.
Instead of being a divisive community we all should be thankful for our neighbors and the support that we all share equally to make this community what it is today. This is accomplished by all of us providing the necessary funding to maintain all of our amenities, assets and equipment in excellent condition. This is what drives property values and attracts new buyers.
In closing, please get out and enjoy many of our amenities. Go out of your way to catch someone doing something good and thank them for it. Put a smile on their face. Far too often, all they hear are complaints. This is a great place to live, and our employees and volunteers provide us with great service. Amenity/Service

Honoring Veterans Day
By Gail Abrams / Link
On November 11, Americans honor the brave men and women in the United States Armed Forces, past and present.
World War I ended on November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month), with the surrender of German forces. Originally called “Armistice Day” to celebrate the victory of the allied forces. Some thirty years later, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day by President Dwight Eisenhower to honor veterans past and present.
Veterans Day has not always been celebrated on November 11. In the late 1960s, Congress passed a bill that moved the date to the fourth Monday in October. However, in 1975, President Gerald Ford formally returned the date to November 11.
On Veterans Day at 11 a.m., Eastern Standard Time (EST), Arlington National Cemetery, home to the graves of more than 400,000 military heroes, honors those who have died for our nation with a solemn service whereby a guard lays a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
New York City holds an annual parade along Fifth Avenue that dates back to 1919. More recently, in 2016, President Barack Obama ordered that each Veterans Day, at 2:11 p.m. EST, a moment of silence lasting two minutes be observed.
This Veterans Day, thank a veteran for their service to our nation.

“As I See It . . . ”
Don’t Worry ... Be Happy!
By Alan G. Spector /Link
Some wisdom I have collected along the way! Thank you to the anonymous people who wrote these bits of great wisdom.
Ÿ Keep a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well, and get your sleep. It's easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. That is why you need to keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs.
Ÿ After 60. It's time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together now.
Ÿ Don't stress over the little things. You've already overcome so much in your life. Don't let the past drag you down and don't let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten.
Ÿ Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: "A person is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection."
Ÿ Be proud, both inside and out. Don't stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and creams well stocked. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong.
Ÿ ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account. Use social networks. You'll be surprised at what old friends you'll meet.
Ÿ Respect the younger generation and their opinions. They may not have the same ideas as you, but they are the future and will take the world in their direction. Give advice, not criticism, and try to remind them that yesterday's wisdom still applies today. Never use the phrase: “In my time.” Your time is now. As long as you’re alive, you are part of this time.
Ÿ Some people embrace their golden years, while others
become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend your time with positive, cheerful people. It'll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you feel older and harder to be around.
Ÿ Don't abandon your hobbies. If you don't have any, make new ones. You can travel, hike, cook, read, dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a kitchen garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf.
Ÿ Get out of the house, meet people you haven't seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a park. Get out there.
Ÿ Try to accept situations as they are. Complaining usually doesn’t change things much.
Ÿ Pains and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of life.
Ÿ If you've been offended by someone – forgive them. If you've offended someone, apologize. Don't drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn't matter who was right. Someone once said: "Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die." Don't take that poison. Forgive, forget, and move on with your life.
Ÿ Laugh away your worries. Remember, you are one of the lucky ones. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life. My valued friends, enjoy a peaceful life at this point in your life ... Don't worry... be happy.

Football: The National Sport That Almost Wasn’t
Ahh! The month of November, especially known for Thanksgiving, a day of gratitude, family get-togethers and football. Did you know that it’s possible we Americans would never have been able to enjoy this sport if not for Teddy Roosevelt? While the Super Bowl is considered the hallmark of celebrating football, “American Football Day” is November 5th of every year.
Let us take a brief dive into the world of football to find out how close it came to no longer existing. Closely based on the English rugby and soccer, gridiron football officially began when universities started to play the game.
The first game was played on November 6, 1869, between Princeton and Rutgers and was held in New Brunswick, NJ.
But by 1905, American football was in crisis; too many young men were actually being killed on the field and no provisions for safety had ever been made.
According to HistoryToday.org, incidents of such tragedies included a 16-year-old player who was running with the ball and met “heavy opposition.” He was thrown to the ground hitting headfirst, neck and shoulders. He never regained consciousness. Another 18-year-old making a tackle broke a rib which pierced his heart. A third 18-year-old was kicked in the head and died of a cerebral hemorrhage. These accidents occurred the same day in three separate games.
Outrage from the public demanded either reforming the game or banning it forever. By now, college football was drawing thousands of spectators to games and had joined baseball and horse racing as the biggest and most popular sports of their day.
The game in 1905 scarcely matches the football game of today; no one wore padding, helmets or protection of any kind. There was no forward passing and only five yards were required to make a first down. The goal of the opposing team was to bludgeon the opposition by locking arms to form a battering ram. Something had to be done.
The game of football did have an admirer, Theodore Roosevelt, who, in 1903 made a speech defending football saying, “I believe in rough games and rough, manly sports.” Seeing the possible demise of football, Roosevelt called together the administrators of Yale, Harvard and Princeton, three powerhouses, with the intent of having them come together to reframe the rules of the game.
New guidelines met with much opposition between those who wanted the game to stay the same for fear it would become too “ladylike,” and those who saw the game as
dangerous and destructive to lives. Indeed in 1906, eleven lives were lost, and the same in 1907.
Revision of the game finally came into being. Nineteen new rules from these meetings were established. They included a neutral zone, now called “the line of scrimmage,” body-breaking mass formation was outlawed, and the first down was stretched to 20 yards. It is said the most revolutionary revision was the forward pass.
The year 1905 represented the possibility of no return for football. Without Roosevelt stepping in to force the leaders of college football to change, the likelihood of the game being banned forever in this country almost came to fruition. There is no doubt, without President Roosevelt’s intervention, we would not have the football games we have today.

FITNESS Bridge
Strengthen your Core- Time for Planksgiving!
By Jessie Miles, Director of Fitness
Strengthening your core will rev up your balance and stability. It’s time to give your core muscles more attention.
These muscles, located throughout much of your trunk, are the key to supporting your lower back and helping you stand, get out of a chair, bend, lift, and maintain your balance. So regular maintenance and tune-ups of the core muscles are important.
Your core muscles provide stability for the moving parts above and below them — the mid-back, or thoracic, spine that helps you twist and turn, and the hips that move you up, down, back, or forward.
The worst core exercises
In the old days, sit-ups and crunches were the go-to moves to keep your core muscles in good shape. But those exercises are not as effective as we once believed. They strengthen only a few muscles, and they pose risks for older adults. They're dangerous because you're pulling on your neck. And they don't train your core. They train the hip flexor muscles. If those muscles get too strong, they pull on the lower back and contribute to back pain.
The best core exercises
A much better approach to strengthening your core is working several core muscle groups at the same time, just the way you would naturally if you were lifting something or climbing. For older adults, three exercises are recommended:
Bridges
Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart. Place your arms at your sides. Tighten your buttocks, then lift your hips up off the floor until they form a straight line with your hips and shoulders. Hold. Return to the starting position. Repeat 10 times.
Planks
Jessie Miles SCSCAI Director of Fitness
Start on your hands and knees. Tighten your abdominal muscles and lower your upper body onto your forearms, aligning your shoulders directly over your elbows and keeping your feet in the air behind you. Keep your back straight, making your body as much like a "plank" as possible. Hold the position and return to the starting position. Repeat 10 times.
Plank
Opposite Arm & Leg Raise
Opposite arm and leg raise
Kneel on all fours, with your head and spine neutral. Extend your left leg off the floor behind you while reaching out in front of you with your right arm. Keeping your hips and shoulders squared, try to bring that leg and arm parallel to the floor. Hold, then return to the starting position. Repeat the exercise with your right leg and left arm. Repeat the exercise on both sides 10 times.
Getting started
If you haven’t worked your core in a long time, start slowly, focusing on the quality of the exercise and gradually increase the number of times you can do it.

Commander Bill Knobloch U.S. Navy (Ret.)
Iwas born in the Bronx, New York and I attended Fordham University, graduating in 1958. Due to the National Military Draft, I was approved by the Navy to attend the Officer Candidate School Rhode Island.
As a Naval Flight Officer, a designated Navigator and InFlight Tactical Coordinator, I flew over the North Atlantic tracking Russian Submarines during the Cold War that also included the North Pole, Greenland, Iceland and Arctic Ocean. In 1962, I then received further assignment to the USS Bennington CV 20. Several squadron six-month ship deployments to the Far East that included Sea of Japan “spy” work on Russian nuclear subs.
Our Carrier, the Bennington, with the Combat Air Wing embarked was ordered to the Gulf of Tonkin where we were engaged in Military operations off South Vietnam and had to re-adjust to the open combat environment. Our squadron operated 24/7 around the clock. I had a final tally of over 300 shipboard landings on an aircraft carrier day and night in all kinds of weather.
Operational flying centered around the Squadron S2E twin engine props that carried either a 500 bomb, torpedo, or mines

to block a harbor. The F-4 Phantom jets had 45 minutes on station time and then had to refuel while our S2 had 4.5 hours loiter time to carry out multi-tactical low-level support. That support included perimeter protection for the Marine Chou Li runway under construction, overhead protection for downed airman waiting for rescue helicopter, and identification for Surface to Air Missile sites (SAM).
In 1967, I was hired as First Officer by Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA, the airline with a smile) while I continued my career in the active reserves that included command of a squadron as part of a Combat Air Wing based on the West coast. I even had celebrity pilot ‘Sully’ as my co-pilot at PSA! It was remarkable that I would land a Boeing 727 at 9 o’clock in the morning in San Diego and then at 2 o`clock in the afternoon would land on the carrier USS Kitty Hawk off San Diego to maintain my carrier qualifications. I retired from the Navy with a rank of Commander in 1980 while continuing my commercial pilot career. I was Captain on Boeing 727,737, DC9, MD80, 757, and the 767 flying to
with 23,000 hours in the air. Countless times I turned right instead of left and because of that survived many brushes with death.
My retirement days included 10 years on a Seattle area City Council and also served the longest time for an elected City Council member.
Coffee, tea or me? One of the best parts of flying commercially was I met the love of my life 45 years ago. She was the stewardess serving up and down the aisles of a 727 in her red ‘Go-Go boots and hot pants’ for PSA while I was flying Captain. It was magic 45 years ago; however, we each took
different paths of responsibility and direction. Magically, we met up 10 years ago, we married and picked up where we left off! We now happily live in Sun City Summerlin, the best kept secret of the West! My wife has enjoyed attending the Quilting Club and we thoroughly enjoy the entertainment offered at the Starbright Theatre. We absolutely love it here in Sun City Summerlin! The tranquility and views and wonderful friends we have met complete our retirement years where every day is a gift. What a Ride of Life!

Honoring Residents Corner: Gail Weiss
By Gail Abrams/Link
Gail moved to Las Vegas 20 years ago. Previously, Gail, her husband and son lived in New York City, three blocks from the World Trade Center, and were among many who experienced the horrors of 9/11. They decided to leave the Big Apple and move to Las Vegas.
At first, they owned a large home outside of Sun City Summerlin. At that time, their son was 11 years old. He entered the magnet program, attended UNLV and currently works as a manager for T-Mobile. Gail has two granddaughters, 2 years old and 8 months old. She helps babysit. Eight years ago, Gail lost her husband and decided to sell her home and move to Sun City Summerlin.
As for Gail’s professional career, while living in New York City, she was the IT Training Manager for a large law firm. When Gail moved to Las Vegas 20 years ago, most of the law firms were not large corporate entities. She worked as a consultant for a while and did some conversion work from WordPerfect to Word for the Family Courts. Gail then became the Training Manager for Encore Productions (they provided the audio-visual equipment to the hotels on the Strip). Gail did customer service training of the sales managers for the major hotels on the Strip using PowerPoint. In 2010, a
recession hit, and tourists stopped coming to LV. Encore was sold to Freeman (the national company that provides audiovisual equipment to hotels on the Strip) and layoffs ensued. Gail was hired as a trainer for a local law firm and was later laid off. These were tough times.
United Healthcare was hiring. Gail interviewed and was offered a job as a Trainer to teach doctors how to use medical software (that was 10 years ago). She worked for SW Medical Associates, later bought by Optum. Gail trained doctors virtually during COVID-19. Gail traveled throughout LV and to Arizona training staff. She subsequently retired.
Since moving to Sun City Summerlin Gail has gotten involved with several Chartered Clubs. She enjoys sharing her love of computers (more than 30 years!).
Gail is the recording secretary for the Computer Club and sits on the Board. She teaches a class once a month. Gail helps people with their computer questions/problems.
Gail also serves on the IT Committee.
In addition, Gail is the IT Administrator for the Temple. She maintains their website, sends out e-mail blasts, and every two months works with the graphic designer on their newsletter. The Temple has a website, and the web designer taught Gail how to use WordPress.
Gail is a member of the Woman’s Club. She maintains their membership roster using Excel.
As for the Solo Club, Gail teaches members how to download and use the MeetUp app to plan group outings.
Gail enjoys bowling with the Social Club and used to maintain their website.
Gail loves teaching computers and enjoys helping people with their computers/phones. Gail is proficient in Apple and
Microsoft products.
Given all the clubs and activities Gail is involved with, she keeps very busy. “If you are bored here in Sun City Summerlin, you have a problem,” says Gail.

SALUTING CINDY SCOTT: U.S. ARMY DESERT STORM VETERAN
A native Texan, born and raised in Houston, my twenties were spent as a mom and working for the post office.
On my 30th birthday, I decided to join the Army. Among my reasons was a desire to live in Europe. The Army provided us with three years in Germany. We enjoyed being so near to so much history and traveled at every opportunity.
August 1981, I was reassigned to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas and worked as a pharmacy technician at Brooke Army Medical Center for three years followed by reassignment to the Academy of Health Sciences to teach in the Pharmacy Technician Training School.
May 1988 brought another reassignment to the 121 CSH in Yongsan, Korea. During the year in Korea, I was fortunate to visit several places in Korea including the DMZ as well as attend several competitive events at the 1988 Olympics, tour Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong, and a week in Hawaii.
From Korea, reassigned to Fort Gordon, Georgia I was able to attend the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta. At this time, I decided to transfer from the regular army to the reserves in order to enroll in college.
I moved from Fort Gordon to Austin, TX in April 1990. I was reassigned to be a Reservist at the 114th Evac Hospital in San Antonio. In November of 1990, in the middle of my second semester, the unit was activated to go to Saudi Arabia in support of Desert Shield. We left San Antonio on January 3, 1991, and eventually ended up in KKMC, King Khalid Military City.
The war had already started, and the night skies were lit up when a Patriot missile took down an Iraqi scud missile aimed at U.S. forces. Our days were greeted by bombs, causing the earth to move under our feet. The war was over quickly
and no one from my unit was harmed. We stayed on for four months to take care of the displaced Iraqi civilians. I retired from the Army as an E-7 in 1998.
I graduated from the University of Texas, Austin in 1994 with a BS in Nursing. In 1996, my husband was offered a position in Columbus, Ohio. Able to attend Ohio State University I graduated in 1998 with an MS in Nursing, as a Nurse Practitioner.
Stayed in Ohio until 2003, then moved back to Houston to help take care of my mother who died the day after I got home. In Houston until retirement in 2011 then lived in Canyon Lake, Texas, and moved to N. Ogden, Utah staying there for a year before moving to Charleston, South Carolina where I remarried. We lived in Charleston until my husband passed away in August of 2020.
My son and his family had lived in Las Vegas for almost 20 years so the decision of where to move was already made. In February 2023, I moved to Sun City Summerlin. I enjoy this community very much; so many activities and opportunities to volunteer which brought me to join the Sun City Summerlin Patrol in July 2023 where I am a Dispatcher and Information Center Officer. The Patrol provides the community with valuable services. I enjoy the camaraderie of my fellow volunteers and hope to continue serving for many years.
I love my country and Jesus. I am drawn to the rugged mountains surrounding Las Vegas. I love all warm, furry creatures and enjoy traveling to new places. I enjoy board games and cards, especially Pai Gow. I am a member of Desert Spring United Methodist Church and Bible Study Fellowship. I enjoy documentaries, especially the ocean with its many facets, and wildlife films.

It Comes Every Year!
It‘s Thanksgiving Day, time for family and friends –but it proves to be hectic from beginning to end. There’s shopping for groceries, with a very long list; then sending the invites hoping no one is missed.
But there’s always one person we question to ask, for fear they’ll get ‘vocal’, and therein lies the task. Perhaps they’ll be quiet, and decide not to shout and express their opinion or get sullen and pout. We’ve picked out the turkey, and the canned goods we need when you consider the work, it was done at warp speed.
So, we spend the next days, just cooking and baking so that everything’s ready and is there for the taking. The potatoes are ready, and the rolls freshly browned –anything one could want was all there to be found!
From cranberry salad to green bean casseroleand when it’s all done, just a clutter of bowls. All the trimmings were served, and the pies all wait –in hopes no one claims to be ‘watching their weight!’
You’ve cooked and you’ve cleaned; dinner’s served with finesse, and all of it done through a great deal of stress.
The table was lovely, puts Martha Stewart to shame.
You are ever so proud – this is your claim to fame! There was no family drama, and the kids all behaved –with a stroke of good luck, your Thanksgiving was saved.
The guys may retire to finish watching the game. No matter whose house, some things just stay the same.
The table looks like you’ve had cavemen for dinner, as everyone quips when they arrived, they were thinner.
So, the ladies are stuck with the remnants behind, to search for some Tupperware to ensure now to find where to store the leftovers, or send home with the guests as you look at your kitchen and think, “Oh Lord, what a mess”.
The table’s a war zone, but everyone has been fed –so, when will they leave so you can just go to bed?!
Overall, a success, but you’re left with one fearif no one else volunteers, you’ll do it again come next year!

DAVE VAUGHAN, PROUD U.S. AIR FORCE VIETNAM VETERAN
Dave proudly states: “I had two jobs in my life: 22 years in the Air Force and 42 years on a cattle ranch in Wyoming.”
His Dad served as a paratrooper in the Asian theater during WWII (under General MacArthur). Dave’s Dad was one of the first paratroopers dropped on Japan. When his father returned home in 1944, Dave was already 6 or 7 years old. Dave was raised by his aunt and uncle in Indiana and he graduated from high school in 1956. Dave then attended Purdue University and got his degree in 1962 (Civil Engineering with a Geology major). He was in AFROTC (Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp) during his college years. After graduation, Dave went into the Air Force and served for 22 years.
Dave was first stationed at George Air Force Base in Victorville, California as an intelligence officer. In 1964, Dave was stationed at Misawa Air Force Base (located approximately 400 miles north of Tokyo, on the main island of Honshu), Japan, assigned to the 39th Air Division. During that period, he spent a six month TDY (temporary duty) tour in Vietnam. “We provided support to ground forces in Vietnam. This was an F-101 reconnaissance outfit, so, we were overflying North Vietnam on a daily basis in the early 1960s,” says Dave.
After his tour in Japan, Lt Vaughan taught AFROTC at Saint Louis University in Missouri. Next, Dave served a full 12 month tour in Vietnam. He provided intelligence information to General Clay and senior staff. Dave became General Clay’s Intelligence Briefing Officer. Clay was the Vice Commander in Chief, Pacific Air Forces.
Dave shares a memorable experience: “I flew with a pilot as a forward air controller just south of the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) over the A Shau Valley along with combat aircraft. The Viet Cong had attacked one of our forward support air bases. We bombed their truck route every day and they rebuilt it every night.”
One time, Dave recalls calling in an air strike. “We had planes from the Air Force and the Navy airborne 24/7. While in the air, we could talk to Army ground forces, plus the Air Force and Navy aircraft.
On one occasion, we got a call for help from the Army as we were flying a push-pull Cessna. We called in an air strike and one of the American combat planes appeared underneath our right wing. The plane was so close as it flew by, going in to drop bombs”, that Dave could see the pilot’s face and helmet!
Vaughan returned to the USA, headquarters SAC (Strategic Air Command) in Omaha, Nebraska as an Intelligence Officer. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in Vietnam and promoted to Captain. There, he supplied information to senior staff. He also served as the Escape and Evasion expert for headquarters SAC.
After that tour of duty, Dave was assigned to F. E. Warren AFB, promoted to Major and attended training and became a missile launch officer. He and a Deputy (fellow missile officer) served 24 hours shifts, 64 feet underground and had 10 nuclear weapons on 10 missiles (undisclosed location in Nebraska). Dave served four years there, became the Wing Safety Officer and later retired.
He and his wife Darlene bought a ranch in Wyoming and ranched for 42 years. They sold their ranch and bought their home in Sun City Summerlin.
Dave proudly recalls his 22 years in the Air Force. Thank you, Dave for your service to our Nation.

SUNCITYSUMMERLINPATROL
Behind the Scenes
“Our Unsung Patrol Heroes”
Everyone has seen the Sun City Summerlin Patrol drivers going about their duties in our communities. You also may have had an opportunity to visit with our Information Officers at the three entrances to this place we call home. If you call our phone number (702-254-2303), you are answered by one of the members of the dispatch section, available 24/7 helping to fulfill our “neighbors helping neighbors” policy.
There is a large group of support folks who keep every little part of the Patrol humming along!
Some of these are self-explanatory; the motor officer keeps our cars in tip-top shape which is no small task as the shifts are constantly changing with numerous drivers on the road. The wash crew can be found every Friday morning, very early, putting the shine on all the vehicles. Schedulers are somehow able to assign folks to all the slots necessary for complete coverage of Sun City Summerlin at all hours of the day and night, holidays included.
We depend heavily on the talented team that keep the computers working properly, taking special care of the statistics and reports that the community needs. Then there are those who make it possible to stay in constant communication with each other as we move about the streets. Oh yes, there is also the tiny detail that we wear a uniform to be very visible to residents. The distribution and inventory of uniforms is a timeconsuming job.
We haven’t mentioned yet the hardworking training division. All of our members are volunteers with very few coming to the job with prior experience. Everyone must complete extensive training with refresher courses on a continuing cycle. The pet officers are so important to Sun City Summerlin families. Even though folks try to keep their fur family safe in their homes, every once in a while the four-footed critters will take a stroll without supervision. Patrol has a good history of finding and helping to reunite our little buddies.
Recruiters, timekeepers, special events, historian, procedures, photographer, flag retirement, awards, forms and records, telephone committee, supplies, and activities reporter are all part of the Patrol. The social events committee keeps morale high throughout the year. We have a person remembering individual birthdays and other important events. A few folks communicate through the written word, not only to fellow Patrol members, but also to the community as a whole. Our
chaplain keeps us grounded each month as he opens our meetings.
There is another very important group of people who watch over all the working parts of Patrol led by the Patrol Board of Directors, elected by the membership. The Watch Commanders are the supervisors completing 12 hour shifts each time they are on duty. The faces may change, but the commitment remains. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful, selfless group of Sun City Summerlin residents, stop by our base at the far end of the Desert Vista Community Center parking lot by the pickle ball courts. We’d love to give you a taste of Patrol.
By Darlene Vaughan, SCS Patrol
The Election of 2025 SCS Patrol Officers will take place on Tuesday, November 26, 6 p.m. at Desert Vista.

The French Club
“Bonjour a tous” – Hello to all. Come and learn with us in a fun environment. “Le Cercle Français” - the Sun City Summerlin French Clubwelcomes all Sun City Summerlin residents interested in learning French or maintaining their French proficiency. You will be surprised how your prior high school French resurfaces from the recesses of your mind. You may soon discover how many French words, phrases, and sentences you will understand without having any prior French knowledge.
Club members fluent in French and who know the French culture lead both Beginner and Intermediate levels. During our Club meetings we laugh together as we learn pronunciation, common phrases, and new vocabulary; enjoy reading and speaking French; respect each person’s language ability; enjoy French music and occasional treats; learn about French culture and current events; engage in Club outings to local French eateries. Members who attended recent outings to Nanny’s Café and The Real Crêpe used their new skills and successfully ordered their meals in French.
Perhaps our “Guess the French Cheese” game at one of the Sun City Summerlin Club Fairs intrigued you. Perhaps you are planning a trip to France or another country where people predominately speak French, and you want to be able to say a few words or read a few signs. Perhaps you have a thirst for knowledge. Perhaps you want to practice or share your own French language skills with others. Perhaps you just want to try something new.
There are no grades or tests. Have fun and learn at your own pace. Enjoy the company of others. A nice way to spend a Friday afternoon.
The Club meets once a week on Fridays, September through June, in the Pinnacle Meeting Room 1-3 p.m. Beginner level meets from 1–2 p.m. Stay for the Intermediate level from 2-3 p.m. Many Club members attend both levels. Learning and study materials are distributed at the Club meetings or emailed to members before each meeting. Yearly Club dues are $5. Contact Club President Denis Kallish at deniskallish@gmail.com.

WateRobics
WateRobics classes are held at Sun Shadows, Monday-Friday at 9-9:45 a.m., and Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12-12:45 p.m. Sessions are led by certified instructors who offer modifications to meet various physical limitations. If you’re new to our community and are looking for a great workout, please join us for two free classes to see if it’s a good fit for you. For information contact Dona Wittman, 916 425-3571, Cathy Dali, 916 838-6378, or Sally Gavin, 283-0472. Election of

Women’s
The November 21 MEMBERS-ONLY meeting at Desert Vista is the social highlight of the year. Summerlin Hospital is sponsoring the catered luncheon, musical entertainment, and medical presentation. There will be uniformed escorts for our ladies, table favors, and raffle prizes. The theme is a salute to Hispanic Culture, as evidenced by the food, table decor, and color scheme. Admission is by ticket only, and tickets will be available at the door for those Club members who have not gotten their tickets yet. New memberships will be accepted as well. Doors at Desert Vista open at 11:30 a.m., and tables will be called for lunch at noon. Elections for 2025 officers will take place at 12:15 p.m. on November 21 at Desert Vista. For additional Club information, contact Judy at 242-0727 or Dee at 719-599-7564.
