C
ape RADD is a marine conservation and research organisation whose mission is to build a community of passionate ocean scientists, conservationists and storytellers to explore, research, educate and ultimately protect our wild marine spaces. And we want you to join us. Cape RADD is situated in Simon’s Town on the South Peninsula along the shores of False Bay in an area of spectacular beauty featuring stunning beaches, marine life and a mountainous backdrop. Just 40km from Cape Town’s city centre, False Bay is a well-known hot spot and one of the most diverse areas in the world for marine life. False Bay hosts an abundance of species, large and small, from colourful nudibranchs, octopus and sea urchins to humpback whales, dolphins and the playful Cape Fur seals, as well as magical kelp forests.

Cape Radd.indd 4
To support our mission, Cape RADD created a unique ecotourism experience to involve the public in exploring, learning and assisting scientists through our Citizen Science ‘Snorkel for Science’ tour. Through our snorkel experience, we highlight the beauty and importance of protecting our oceans and the threats to our marine environments, with particular focus on the endemic shy sharks of the kelp forests.

Contribute to marine conversation Everyone can play a part in citizen science marine conservation by joining the Cape RADD snorkel experience with a difference! Guests join our team of marine biologists on a guided snorkel into the kelp forests and search for the elusive shy sharks, collecting photo ID data on the local species of False Bay. During your underwater adventure,

you will learn about the fascinating relationships between the marine organisms, how we track animals through the kelp forest, and how we are photographing the sharks’ patterns to use them to identify individual sharks so we can estimate how many sharks there are and help protect them. Ultimately, guests contribute towards the bigger picture, gaining a better understanding of the marine ecosystems and protection of our oceans. Our experienced guides help you see all the wonderful marine life you might otherwise miss. This adventure combines a fun wildlife experience with education, while directly contributing towards marine conservation through citizen-science-led data collection. Suitable for the whole family. Scuba options are also available through our sister dive company, Impact Divers.

Out in the Kenyan wilderness Do you fancy adventuring in the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Southwestern Kenya, one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife and wilderness conservation regions? Then, the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is a sophisticated sanctuary from where to discover nature and breathtaking vistas. Exhilarating guided game drives offer guests the opportunity to observe the “Big Five” that Masai Mara is home to. Between June and September, the reserve hosts the annual great wildebeest migration, which sees more than 10 million animals travel from the Serengeti in neighbouring Tanzania. The lodge’s 20 private tents provide a peaceful sanctuary to recharge and reset and feature terraces overlooking the Talek River, a water source and habitat for many wildlife. The tented honeymoon suite offers a private plunge pool, while two interconnecting king and twin suites are ideal for families with children over the age of six (the minimum age of guests at the lodge).
The lodge has a number of thoughtfully designed spaces, from the cosy Adventure Lounge, full of books to get lost in, and the Fig Tree Deck, where guests can gather around the fire pit. The Spa by JW emulates the serenity of the reserve and offers tailored experiences and signature treatments. At the heart of the camp is the JW Garden – an outdoor space for guests to spend time discovering homegrown, organic ingredients, including the lodge’s signature rosemary. The lodge's chefs use the garden’s produce to craft personalised dishes, cocktails and mocktails. And the Sarabi Restaurant allows guests to venture out into the reserve with the lodge’s guides to enjoy a freshly prepared “Bush Breakfast” or dinner while sipping sundowners and soaking in the breathtaking savannah vistas. JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is a 30-minute drive from Keekorok Airstrip and a 25-minute drive from Sekenani BOOK Main Gate.

Dining
Staying in?
We round up a few foodie spots that make it worthwhile getting in your car Nothing to it If you’re in or around Stellenbosch, you should definitely stop off at the De Warenmarkt (dewarenmarkt.com) and grab a delicious breakfast at The Kitchen or try bubbly and oysters at the Kaapse Vonkel MCC and Oyster Bar. And if you’re in the mood for a grab-and-go – the deli is stocked to the rafters with everything from delectable olives and fragrant spice rubs to creamy cheeses and glistening jams. Pick up some locally sourced ingredients and experiment at home.
And the winner is … Wanna dine at the second annual Dineplan Reviewers’ Choice award-winning restaurant? Then definitely add Good to Gather, a tiny farm-to-table restaurant on Rozendal Farm at the foot of the Botmaskop mountain in Stellenbosch. It offers a three-course-menu that changes weekly and incorporates seasonal ingredients locally sourced from small-scale farmers. Diners can savour these culinary delights under the oak trees in the courtyard throughout summer.
And for dessert, why not try Allesverloren Red Muscadel with coconut panna cotta and coconut biscuits? This dessert pairs superbly with Allesverloren Muscadel – a bright, glucose overload of maraschino cherry delight! But it is not just sweet; the fact that it’s been fortified with grape spirit adds a delicate, fiery note to its heart. Then there are sprightly notes of mint and humbug sweets that add complexity. Satin viscosity makes it oh-so-moreish.
Good to Gather treats
IMAGES: SUPPLIED
Some other great stops in Stellenbosch: Meraki, Basic Bistro or the Deli at Lanzerac. Also try Genki, Weltevreden 1692 or Spek en Bone. Post and Pepper, The Fat Butcher, Cavalli Estate or Rust en Vrede Restaurants are always a great vibe with excellent ambience, scenery and food. Sojourning in and around Durban, then you should give Rockets in Umhlanga (rocketslife. tv/rockets-umhlanga/) a go. The menu offers mains, desserts, tapas, sushi and platters, a hit for solo or large family dining. If you find yourself in Florida road, Windemere, then you cannot skip Dukkah (dukkah.co.za). Open for lunch and dinner, it also has an upscale cocktail bar and lounge. The menu takes its influences from South Africa’s eastern coastline, so prepare your tastebuds for fresh oysters and authentic curries. The best part of this experience is that dining is open until 2am.
If you’re staying in for a chilled, relaxing time with friends, why not serve up pan-fried fish and brown butter paired with Allesverloren Chenin Blanc. The dish’s flavours are a perfect match to the wine, which has an aroma of subtle graphite, yellow apple and lime. Winemaker Wilhelm de Vries describes the palate as showing ripe stone fruit with a great balance of acidity. The finish is delightfully elegant.

Destination Africa Intra-Africa travel has held a reputation for being disproportionately expensive compared to transcontinental flights. But this narrative is being redefined, says Kirby Gordon, chief marketing officer of FlySafair

ravel between Harare, Livingstone, Victoria Falls, and Maputo is becoming more affordable, and for South African travellers, this isn't just a convenience; it's an open invitation to experiences that have been on our doorstep, yet often overlooked. Here are two must-experience Southern Africa destinations you can access via FlySafair’s newest open routes: Botswana and Zambia.
Chobe's ultimate river safari adventure Chobe National Park, renowned for its elephant populations, offers a raw, untamed perspective of Africa. Why not take in the majesty of the bush from a new perspective, such as on a river cruise onboard a comfortable houseboat? You’ll drift along one of Africa’s best-known rivers, the mighty Chobe, while admiring the wildlife on the riverbanks as the animals stop to savour a drink – right in front of you. A Chobe River safari is also ideally combinable with the Okavango Delta. During its peak, the delta becomes an intricate network of islands, channels and lagoons, making it an optimal time for exploration. Navigating the Okavango on a traditional mokoro offers an almost meditative experience as you glide silently among water lilies and papyrus. Where to stay: The Zambezi Queen or Chobe Princess houseboats.

Immersive walking safaris in the lower Zambezi Walking safaris deliver an earthy, grounded experience that traditional game drive safaris often miss. The Lower Zambezi, with its dense fauna and lush flora, provides an ideal backdrop for such safaris. Where to stay: Lolebezi Safari Lodge.

SAVVY TRAVELLER
Money-saving travel tips for visiting London Antoinette Turner, GM of Flight Centre South Africa, shares that if you know the secrets to unlocking London’s affordable side, you can stretch your rands further while ensuring you experience all the magic London has to offer. 1. Travel hack – Oyster Card vs single tickets. For daily commuting or exploring the city, the Oyster Card and contactless payment methods are your best friends.
Sean Maher, market vice president: South Africa, Marriott International, shares that the popularity of working while vacationing is great news
T
he concept isn’t new at all, but bleisure travel, post-COVID-19, has certainly gained traction among South Africans and remote workers worldwide. A recent study, The Year of the “New” Traveler by the American Hotel & Lodging Association 2022 in collaboration with Accenture, reports that a remarkable 89 per cent of global business travellers expressed a desire to add a private holiday to their work trips, highlighting the appeal of this trend. Bleisure travel offers an economical way to maximise travel experiences by extending business trips to include leisure activities, allowing individuals to save on travel costs while enjoying the best of both worlds. In parallel, the rise of "digital nomads" has contributed to the growth of this trend. These individuals enjoy the flexibility to work from anywhere, making them a significant and fast-growing segment of the travel market. About 32 per cent of individuals are planning business trips, with a remarkable 62 per cent being remote workers, according to Expedia Group's Traveller Value Index 2023. Moreover, 85 per cent of business travellers express excitement about travelling for work, with millennials (45 per cent) and Gen Zs (40 per cent) leading the way in travel. This indicates that remote work is no longer exclusive to digital nomads. With the rise of bleisure travel, the hospitality industry is witnessing a paradigm shift towards a holistic travel experience. Providing tailor-made experiences for corporate travellers and embracing this growing trend will help the industry secure greater customer loyalty and encourage higher spending.
Some great bleisure stays Protea Hotel by Marriott Sea Point offers guests magical sea views, perfect for that barefoot “Workcationer”. For the ultimate workcation setting, The Protea Hotel by Marriott Clarens, nestled in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains, near the Golden Gate National Park and the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, is perfect for eco-lovers who simply enjoy exploring this tranquil, magical landscape.

3. Accommodation hack – stay outside Central London. While Central London offers unparalleled convenience, proximity to major attractions, and bustling city life, the areas on the city’s outskirts, for example, Zone 2–6, can provide a more budget-friendly experience, along with easy access to transportation networks. By opting for accommodation in these areas, you can enjoy savings of up to 50 per cent for budget options and up to 35 per cent for mid-range options. 4. Sightseeing hack – the London Pass. The London Pass is a valuable tool for those looking to explore multiple attractions in London without paying full price at each stop. It allows you to access a variety of popular sites and museums at a discounted rate, often saving you between 20 and 50 per cent compared to standard admission prices. Travellers can use the London Pass to make the most of attractions, such as the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, and Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tours.

2. Dining hack – takeaway coffee vs sit-down. Choosing a takeaway coffee from places such as Pret A Manger can save you up to 50 per cent compared to sitting down at a cafe.

The table isn’t the only flat top You know about climbing Table Mountain, but did you know about … climbing the Amphitheatre in the Royal Natal National Park? Also flat-topped and awe-inspiring, the Northern Drakensberg’s Amphitheatre is just as photogenic as its Capetonian sister, perhaps even more so with its waterfall, Tugela Falls, cascading over its edge. Located in the Royal Natal National Park, this impressive five-kilometre-long crescent of basalt cliffs is a paradise for hikers, offering numerous trails with extraordinary views, including the challenging but rewarding hike to the Tugela Falls, the world’s second-highest waterfall.
You know about Big Five safaris in the Kruger, but did you know about … meerkat safaris in Oudtshoorn? The meerkat is Oudtshoorn’s new sweetheart and a surprising rival to the Kruger’s Big Five. Meerkat safaris in the Klein Karoo are winning rave reviews with their unique insight into the lives of these endearing, social animals. Begin your safari at dawn, joining the meerkats for morning rituals – you drinking coffee and tea, and the meerkats standing and warming their bellies adorably in the sun. Observe the colony and learn all about their rituals, behaviours and intricate burrow systems with BOOK this charming, easy-going safari experience.
Wine and art with a touch of oink! You know about wine tastings in the Winelands, but did you know about … the pig that paints like Picasso in Franschhoek? You can experience the wine and art of the Winelands in a most unexpected way in Franschhoek. Head to Farm Sanctuary SA and meet Pigcasso, the pig that paints on canvas with a paintbrush she holds in her mouth. Pigcasso’s artworks sell for up to R160 000, hang in art collectors’ homes worldwide, and are exhibited around the globe, currently showing in galleries in the French Riviera, the United Kingdom and China. Pigcasso has even collaborated with Swatch to design its Flying Pig watch. Her paintings inspire viewers to consider their relationship with food, animals and climate change, and all profits go to Farm Sanctuary SA in Franschhoek, Pigcasso’s home and a nonprofit organisation that rescues farm animals. Singer/songwriter Paxton shares why her latest album release is such a personal journey
The evolution of my sound … I feel I am finally finding my sound and my identity as an artist. I haven’t felt this secure about who I want to be and show up as in a while. Sonically, 23:23 is heavily influenced by a lot of African sounds and genres, whereas the first album is very pop. I was 17 years old when I released my first album, and this time around, at age 23, I have very different stories to tell. This album is a lot more grown and vulnerable and shows how I’ve evolved since the first album. I’m 23 in 2023, hence the title 23:23. My album cover art … is a reflection of my sound: vibrant, bold and proudly African. My collabs … I was blessed to work with MajorSteez and Shekhinah, two artists I admire and appreciate. The exciting part about collaborating is the fusion of different sounds and styles of music. I also love seeing other artists tap into their artistic side and explore their creative processes. I’m deeply connected to … every single track on my album, but the last track, “Memories”, has a very special
place in my heart. This song is an ode to my journey and how music changed my life. On this track, I feature the children’s choir that began my singing journey. It was truly a fullcircle moment! I was in the best space I’ve ever been creatively … everything turned out beautifully and happened with ease. I think the biggest challenge was trying not to leak news of the album prematurely because of how excited I was. My hope is … that my fans see the growth and relate to the content of the album and that it moves, heals and inspires them. Did you know? I actually love recording in a dark room. So all the lights are switched off before I’m able to sing. It helps with the anxiety and makes me feel as though nobody is watching. Catch me on … 16 December at Unity on the Square, Cape Town. Integrating pink décor items and fabrics into your home décor requires finesse. Start by selecting shades that complement your existing colour scheme – don’t try to go too bold. Add a touch of pink using ottomans, pillows or subtle décor items. For bolder ideas, consider balancing pink furniture with neutrals. Finesse and restraint are your allies, allowing pink to amplify the design without overpowering the room. www.cielo.co.za
When incorporating pink elements into your home décor, it’s important to consider the effect you want to achieve. If going for a bright and bold look, opt for fuchsia or hot pink accents, such as statement chairs or rugs, in the living room. For a more subtle approach, blush pink tones in décor items, such as flowers, vases, and scatter cushions, can help create a calming and cosy atmosphere. When pairing pink with other colours, consider complementary shades, such as cobalt blue, grey, or white, to balance the look. Mix and match textures like velvet, cotton and linen to add depth and interest to your decor. www.blockandchisel.co.za

Rooibos Beer Recipe Makes: 7.25 litres Preparation time: 20 minutes (excluding fermentation time)

he British drink theirs warm, Americans drink theirs ice-cold and South Africans like it chilled … Our nation consumes roughly 34.47 million hectolitres (hl) of ale annually, which makes us the world’s 12th-largest beer-consuming nation. But the way we drink beer is evolving. Once dominated by mass-produced lagers, the market has evolved into a dynamic landscape brimming with craft breweries, innovative flavours and a burgeoning consumer base. To cater to diverse consumer preferences, breweries have pushed the boundaries of flavour innovation. Spices, fruit and herbal tisanes, such as rooibos, have found their way into beer recipes, resulting in intriguing blends that reflect the country’s rich culinary heritage. Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council, says the small-batch, all-natural brewing market has experienced a surge in popularity. “For modern consumers, homebrewing and/or enjoying unique and diverse beer flavours adds value to the experience. Homebrewing allows beer enthusiasts to experiment with different ingredients and brewing techniques, giving them the chance to create personalised and one-of-a-kind (signature) brews.” For homebrewers, try this rooibos beer recipe for a great craft beer that also works on your skin health as rooibos, according to the Rooibos Council, reduces wrinkles and boosts the production of healthy skin cells. The council says that the high flavonoid levels in rooibos also help to improve skin disorders such as eczema. Its natural anti-inflammatory properties will help to soothe and relieve inflamed skin too.

Method 1. Dissolve the 5ml sugar in 500ml lukewarm water. Sprinkle the instant yeast over and set aside until frothy, about 10 minutes. 2. Mix the remaining dry ingredients with the liquid and juice together with the activated yeast mixture and stir until well mixed. 3. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrapping and leave in a warm place for about 12 hours. 4. Strain the mixture through a muslin cloth and pour the beer into bottles with tops. Leave in a cool place for 3 days. Chill before serving. Hint As the beer is very fizzy, ensure that the bottles are opened slowly and carefully, allowing the fizz to subside before totally removing the lid. It must be stored in a cool place or else the yeast will ferment too quickly, and the bottles could explode (preferably use plastic bottles). Recipe courtesy of I Love 2 Bake: ilove2bake.co.za/
