Sunderland has been an important centre for education since 674AD, when Benedict Biscop built St Peter’s Church and monastery. Here we take a look back at some of the key developments of the 20th and 21st century which have helped create the modern University of Sunderland… Sunderland Technical College opened, built at a cost of £27,800. The Principal, Mr Branford, was also responsible for the School of Art, run from the Town Hall.
Dr Anne Wright named the University’s first Vice-Chancellor in 1992.
The University of Sunderland is now a truly global organisation, with a presence in almost 30 countries worldwide, working with as many partners. We have around 6,500 students studying University of Sunderland programmes overseas – almost treble the number of international students on campus. We now also have a campus in London, providing programmes for around 2,000 students. Some of our achievements: •
