WHY STUDY IN THE UK? Thousands of students come to study in the UK every year, and it’s not hard to see why – a British university qualification is universally known and highly respected around the world. University teaching is tightly regulated and developed from new research, which means you’ll develop academic knowledge of the very highest quality. The British higher education system encourages students to develop analytical skills, independent thinking and self-discipline.
This, together with rigorous and high-level academic development, means that students graduate from British universities with the skills, knowledge and attitude that companies are looking for. English is the language of business across the world, and by living and studying in the UK you will be able to develop your English language skills to a very high level. Excellent language skills will open up career opportunities around the world – both in countries where English is a main language, and in countries who trade with English-speaking countries.
The University of Sunderland is extremely proud to be one of the largest recruiter of overseas students in the UK. This creates a fantastically diverse student population, and means that you’ll be studying alongside – and perhaps making lifelong friends with – students from over 100 countries around the world. Our reach goes well beyond the North East of England – as well as our two campuses in Sunderland, we also have up to 2,000 students studying at our London facility in Canary Wharf, at any one time, and over 7,500 students studying our courses in their own countries, as part of transnational partnerships. We believe that a university education is about much more than just gaining a qualification: we believe it’s about encouraging you to challenge yourself, develop yourself and build up the qualifications, knowledge, experience and attitude you need to land the career you want when you graduate.
5
WHY STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY of Sunderland? The University of Sunderland is an ambitious university with a vast global reach. We’re internationally known for the quality of our teaching and research, and all of our research-active staff also teach, which means that you benefit from cutting-edge research at every stage of your degree. And it really is cutting-edge research: we’re proud that 10 areas of our research are considered ‘world-leading’ by the latest Research Excellence Framework, which assesses the quality of research in all of the UK’s universities. Sunderland is well known as ‘the friendly university’, and that’s because we genuinely care about the wellbeing of all our students. Our job is to make sure you have the best possible experience at university, and so if you need any support while you’re with us, we’ll do our very best to help you. The North East of England has one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in the UK. It doesn’t take long to travel from bustling urban cities to ancient forests and national parks. Sunderland itself is very near the sea, and miles of beautiful sandy beach is just a ten minute walk from the University. The North East is also one of the most affordable regions of the UK, which helps make living and studying in Sunderland extremely attractive. At the University of Sunderland you’ll be encouraged to take on relevant placements with local, regional or national companies. You’ll also have the chance to learn from visiting speakers, and take masterclasses given by industry experts. Come to the University of Sunderland and you’ll graduate with more than just an excellent academic qualification: you’ll also graduate with enviable job prospects, and irreplaceable lifelong friends.

“I knew I wanted to study a tourism related degree, and so I researched universities online. “I found that Sunderland performed really well in this subject in the university league tables, and living in the north east very much appealed to me. “I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy a varied placement year at the Intercontinental London Park Lane Hotel as part of my course, gaining valuable experience in a number of different roles throughout my placement. I’ve been able to apply theoretical knowledge to a real working environment and develop my skills in communication, time management and teamwork. “My family encouraged me to study abroad and experience a different education system to further my future career, and I’m glad they did. Experiencing new cultures and foods, and making friends from all over the world really excites me, and it’s great to learn and exchange experiences and ideas with new people. I’d encourage other students to do the same; come to Sunderland and study in a brilliant environment, meet friendly and professional staff, and enjoy a wonderful social life.”
Lingjia Guan, from China BSc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality

“I decided I wanted to set up my own business in the second semester of my final year at university, and made an appointment with a careers advisor. He informed me about the Enterprise Place, who have taught me a great deal and made running my own business a reality. “The Enterprise Place offered me lots of helpful services, including a six week course that I took whilst working on my final project, covering everything from finance and insurance, to business plans, invoices, and more. All of this was new to me. I was also offered free office space which I use twice a week, and one-to-one meetings with business advisors. “I now run my own UK based animation and design company called Risk of Bear. I have joined forces with another animator – a fellow graduate from the University of Sunderland – to start our own animation studio together, also with the support of the Enterprise Place. It is extremely challenging, but it just makes it that much more rewarding when things go right. Any mistakes fall on you, but so do all the victories!”

We also give you extensive experience of international, national and local culture, which further enriches your social, cultural and academic experiences. American glass and ceramics student Logann Pearce has enjoyed her experience at Sunderland so much, she doesn’t want to go home! Logann, who is studying Glass and Ceramics in her hometown of Georgia, took up the option of studying for one semester at the University of Sunderland as part of her degree course. She said: “I was attracted to Sunderland as I wanted to get the feeling of a homely place without being overwhelmed by tourists all the time and to be able to get an authentic experience around British people. “National Glass Centre is also a major plus since in Georgia we don’t have any professors who can do hot glass. “It’s the first university I’ve ever felt so in love with – it’s been an amazing experience.”

WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY
ACCOMMODATION All undergraduate international students studying at our Sunderland campuses are guaranteed a room in university accommodation for the duration of their course. At the University of Sunderland we have four student accommodation sites (including The Forge U Student Village - working in partnership with the University), which are all located within 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometres) of Sunderland city centre. Living in university accommodation is convenient, safe, cost-effective and a great way to make new friends. All of our accommodation is covered by 24/7 CCTV security cameras for your safety. Living in Sunderland is great value for money, and the cost of our accommodation includes heating, lighting, internet and personal possessions insurance. There is a free campus bus service which links all accommodation sites to both campuses, and a bedding pack (if required) is available from your accommodation reception on arrival which includes a pillow, pillow case, duvet, duvet cover and bed sheet. Our accommodation is self-catered, and you will have a fully furnished private single bedroom, and access to a shared kitchen, social areas, and on-site laundry facilities. Cooking for yourself is all part of the fun of living at university, but you also have a lot of meal options within the University and the city. The University of Sunderland has a wide range of food and drink in our food courts and cafés. We offer healthy eating choices that include daily vegetarian and halal options, and we are proud to have Fairtrade status in recognition of our commitment to promoting fair, ethical and sustainable trading. Sunderland itself is a
24
multicultural city, and it has a huge range of restaurants and speciality supermarkets. International students tell us that they want to make friends with UK students and experience UK life and culture, so we don’t have separate accommodation for international students – instead, you’ll have exactly the same experience as UK students. If you would like to live with friends, we can arrange single culture accommodation on request. However, this will depend on availability. You can choose to live in a mixed gender, all-female or all-male flat. We are able to provide accommodation that has technology to support students who are deaf or hearing impaired, and we have rooms, kitchens and bathrooms which are easily accessible for students with physical and mobility impairments. We can also help if you have any other requirements such as agreeing to supply your own personal fridge for storing medication. To ensure that this support is available we would suggest you make your requirements known on your accommodation application as soon as possible. Accommodation is available throughout the year, including during holiday times. Our Students’ Union runs a society called Connect, which organises events and activities during quieter times at the University so there will always be friendly students and staff around.
Visit our website: www.sunderland.ac.uk
If you plan to live with your partner and/or children, you can access our family and couple accommodation. At least one of the couple must be a registered Sunderland student, and there may be visa restrictions if you are coming to the UK from another country. Family/couple accommodation is strictly limited and we recommend booking as early as possible. If you are considering bringing your partner or family to Sunderland you should contact the Accommodation Office before making travel arrangements. For more information about University of Sunderland accommodation, and to see virtual tours of all our accommodation sites, go to: www.sunderland.ac.uk/ accommodationservices If you require further information or would like to speak to one of the Accommodation Services team, we have a dedicated email address for international students; where you are guaranteed a response within 24 hours. We have over 40 sports teams competing weekly in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Leagues, as well as other competitions throughout the year. You can follow the progress of all these teams through the University’s in-house sports media platform, SportsByte at: sportsbyte.sunderland.ac.uk If you’re serious about sport, the University funds talented individuals through the Elite Athlete scholarship scheme. Our work in sports such as netball, football, futsal, basketball, volleyball, swimming and tennis has seen a large increase in performance athletes and coaches coming to study in Sunderland. Sport at the University goes far beyond simply playing your chosen sport. Join the Sport Career Academy and access opportunities in health and wellbeing, coaching, officiating, events and media. CitySpace is the University’s iconic facility for sports, fitness and social activity, and it offers something for every level and ability. There is a 70-station gym with state-of-theart equipment, a fully-equipped sports hall, strength and conditioning room and an indoor climbing wall. CitySpace is also home to Team Sunderland, so you can watch National League volleyball, netball, and basketball. Sunderland is a coastal city and many students enjoy surfing, windsurfing, sailing and scuba diving. Sunderland’s Aquatic Centre is the only Olympic-size swimming pool between Leeds and Edinburgh, and if you like rock climbing then Sunderland Wall is the place to go – at 23 metres tall it’s one of the largest indoor climbing centres in the UK. If you prefer to watch sport, your choices include Premier League football in Sunderland and Middlesbrough, cricket at Durham County Cricket Club, basketball with Newcastle Eagles, and rugby with Newcastle Falcons. JOIN IN AT THE
STUDENTS‘ UNION One of the best things about being a student is the sense of belonging, and your Students’ Union is at the heart of this experience. Students’ Union membership is free and you are automatically enrolled as a member as soon as you register on your course.
The Union also provides support to help make your learning experience here excellent. This includes offering independent, confidential advice to help you through the ups and downs of university life. The Union coordinates the Student Representation system, and delivers training for Student Reps empowering them to represent your views on academic issues.
Your Students’ Union is run by students, for students, and we pride ourselves on helping you make your university experience valuable for life. We are here to empower you, so you can play an active role in university life, get the support you need while making friends and squeeze as much fun as possible out of your time here.
We also organise the Connect Group – a great way to meet other students, visit interesting places, and have fun. Regular gatherings, trips and events make sure there is something for everyone and it is a great way to get to know the area too, especially if you are coming to the UK or the Sunderland region for the first time!
Whether you want to help raise money for charities, volunteer in the community, get elected and be involved in student democracy, take a leadership role in making positive change for students, or simply wish to ask a question or raise a concern, we are here for you.
The University of Sunderland Students’ Union is affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS), which means our students can access hundreds of student discounts through NUS Extra. NUS Extra cards cost £12 a year, and offers many shopping discounts both online and in store. The average student can save over £180 each year! For details visit www.nus.org.uk. Order your card online and it will be delivered to the Students’ Union office on City Campus for you to collect. Make sure you come and say hello to us too!

Your Union is all about students. It is governed by a Trustee Board including five sabbatical officers. These are students (or recent graduates) taking a year out to help run the Union and work with you to make sure the student experience at Sunderland is the best it can be. For relaxation and recreation, the Union caters for all tastes. We run lots of events across the city throughout the year as well as exploring ways to make life on campus as fun and vibrant as possible. The Union also organises an extensive course of Freshers Week events aimed at welcoming all new students to the city as well as to the University.

SUNDERLAND
AND THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND Sunderland has everything you would expect from a major city: history, culture, arts and sport. But we also have a few extras. Sunderland is a city by the sea in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, and our people are famous for being some of the friendliest in the country. Our City
Sport
Sunderland is a city with a warm heart and a great quality of life. Set on the North East coast at the mouth of the River Wear, Sunderland has a rich heritage. With at least £700m being invested over the next few years in regeneration work and infrastructure – such as a new bridge over the Wear and improvements in the city centre and at the seafront – the future is looking bright.
The North East is passionate about sport and at the heart of it is The Stadium of Light – the magnificent home of the premiership club Sunderland AFC.
Sunderland’s 7th century St Peter’s Church was the residence of Anglo-Saxon saint the Venerable Bede, and the Church was also where the oldest existing Latin version of the Bible – the Codex Amiatinus – was written in the early 8th century.
As you would expect being on the coast we have top class water facilities at the Sunderland Marina and The Marine Activities Centre and also the only Olympic size swimming pool between Leeds and Edinburgh at the Sunderland Aquatic Centre.
Arts and Culture Sunderland has a world of culture for you to discover. Good places to start are the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, home to over 2,000 tropical plants and flowers; National Glass Centre, the only UK centre celebrating the history of glassmaking and providing a world focus for glass; and The Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, a place to experience exciting and cuttingedge new art.
Theatre and Music If you’re a fan of musical theatre and West End shows, then head to the Sunderland Empire – one of the largest theatres in the North East. For live music, try one of the many local bands who could be on the verge of fame, or head to the Stadium of Light for the big names – acts who have played there recently include One Direction, Foo Fighters, Rihanna and Beyoncé.
Outdoor Events Every year Sunderland proudly hosts the Sunderland International Airshow, the biggest free annual airshow in Europe. This year one million people came from all over the country to see a glorious display of plane acrobatics, including the RAF Red Arrows, one of the world’s best aerobatic display teams.
33
THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND In 2018 Sunderland will host the prestigious Tall Ships Race, a European maritime extravaganza. Ships hold a special place in Sunderland’s history; it was once the largest shipbuilding city in the world! The North East of England has one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in the UK, with striking coastlines, ancient forests and rolling hills. A third of the North East is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty or a National Park, and there are nine forests and over 50 castles and Roman forts – in fact the North East has more castles than any other English region.
And getting around couldn’t be easier; Sunderland is ideally placed to enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling, walking or climbing in Northumberland, the Lake District and North Yorkshire – and all are easily accessible by train or car. Whichever direction you take there will be something incredible to fill your day. Travelling from Sunderland to many major cities is easy. Taking the train to London takes just 3.5 hours, and historic York is 1.5 hours away. Edinburgh in Scotland is 2 hours away.
The region also has a rich culture and heritage, with 65 museums and art galleries, and worldfamous heritage sites Hadrian’s Wall, Lindisfarne on Holy Island, and Durham Cathedral. The time you spend at the University of Sunderland will just about be enough to see the highlights of this wonderful region. One day you could be listening to the Northern Sinfonia at Sage Gateshead, the next you could be exploring the unspoilt beaches of Northumberland.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND HOW TO APPLY Academic qualifications The University recognises all internationally accredited qualifications. Each application is considered on its own merits and we give careful consideration to other factors such as work experience and maturity. To be considered for an undergraduate degree course it is necessary to have the equivalent of a minimum of two UK General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level passes. Please see individual course information on the website for more detail. You can also apply for advanced entry to an undergraduate course (for example, level 2 or 3) if you have a diploma equivalent to one or two years of a UK honours degree in a relevant subject.
How to apply For postgraduate and direct entry courses, apply directly to the University or contact your local office or agent in your home country. Applying directly to the University: 1) Go to www.sunderland.ac.uk and search for your course. Go to the ‘Contact and Apply’ tab at the top of the course page and click on ‘Apply Now’. 2) Follow the step-by-step guide through to completing your online application form.
For postgraduate courses you need to have a degree equivalent to a UK honours degree and, in some cases, relevant work experience.
3) Once you have completed this, you will be given a unique Personal ID number so you can be kept up-to-date with any developments in your application process.

CONDITIONAL OFFER LETTER ACCEPT OFFER, FULFIL CONDITIONS AND PAY DEPOSIT CAS LETTER
Applying for a visa to study in the UK The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) rules are controlled by a Points-Based System (PBS). Tier 4 is specifically for students coming to the UK to study. All new non EEA/EU/Swiss National students wanting to study in the UK are required to apply for entry clearance under Tier 4. To apply for a Tier 4 visa, you will require a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter together with the original copies of all supporting documents. CAS letters are only valid for six months and you cannot apply for a visa earlier than three months before your course starts. When your visa is issued, it will be to study at the University of Sunderland and your visa will show the University’s Sponsor Licence Number. Should you wish to study at an alternative higher education institution in the UK, you will be required to apply for and obtain a new visa for the institution concerned before you would be allowed to enrol. Under the Points-Based System (PBS), the University of Sunderland will be required to report to the UKVI any student who obtains entry clearance under the PBS on the basis of our offer but does not enrol at the start of the semester specified. Students who enrol at the University of Sunderland but later decide to withdraw, interrupt or suspend their studies, or who fail to attend their classes for significant periods, will also be reported to the UKVI.
For more information about the immigration process: UK Visas and Immigration www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration/study-visas UKCISA (Council for International Student Affairs) www.ukcisa.org.uk/
Study Abroad If you are coming to study on the course as part of your degree from an overseas institution, and the period of time that you will be studying in the UK is six months or more, you will need a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa. You will receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) letter which you will need to submit with your visa application. If you are studying with us for one semester only then you can enter the UK as a Short Term Student. You don’t need a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa to study with us for one semester. You may, however, need to obtain entry clearance or apply for your Short Term Student permissions before you come to study. Please check the UKVI website for more information about visa requirements.

AcademIc lIfe The University of Sunderland has a rich academic pedigree; we’ve been providing higher education since 1901 and have over 124,000 graduates around the globe. We’re also innovative and forward-thinking, having recently invested £10m in a new Enterprise and Innovation Hub including the region’s first FabLab, and opened a new School of Nursing in June, which will help National Health Service (NHS) providers to fill much-needed nursing vacancies. Don’t just take our word for it – students voted us the ‘Best University in the North East’ in the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2016 and 94% of our graduates are in work or higher level study six months after graduation, according to the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey.

LEVELS OF STUDY Undergraduate Degrees
Postgraduate Research Degrees
A full-time degree that leads to a qualification such as BA, Bsc or BEng usually takes three years to complete, if you take a placement it will take four years. The MPharm also takes four years to complete. If you want more flexibility to your degree and can’t decide which course to study, you can combine two different subjects in one degree. A Combined Subjects degree is considered just as rigorous as a single subject degree, and some employers especially value the extra flexibility and breadth that a Combined Subjects degree offers.
The University of Sunderland offers Research degrees for postgraduate study. Our research has been classified as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ in ten academic areas, by the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF). Research degrees are the highest level of degree awarded by UK universities. If you want to research an area of interest, and make an original contribution to existing knowledge, then a research degree provides the ideal framework to pursue your research aims. All of our research programmes are designed to develop a deeper understanding through original investigation and to generate new knowledge. Each degree is unique as it is built around your personal research on a topic of your choice.
Postgraduate Degrees Taught Masters programmes usually take a year to complete if studied full-time, and are advanced level qualifications which are normally only studied after an undergraduate honours degree. Masters programmes lead to an award such as an MA, MSc or MBA, with typical interim awards of a Postgraduate Certificate and a Postgraduate Diploma, and are usually made up of taught modules (lectures, seminars, practical work etc), with a significant supervised project or dissertation at the last (Masters) stage of the award.
We offer the following research degree programmes: •
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
•
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
•
Professional Doctorate (DProf) focuses on work-based projects
•
PhD by Existing Published or Creative Work. This route is open to academics whose articles have been published
•
Higher Doctorate – Doctor of Science (DSc), Doctor of Letters (DLitt), Doctor of Technology (DTech) and Doctor of Laws (LLD) are for people who are leading authorities in their field of study
You will work closely with a supervisory team who will advise and support you throughout your study. We welcome applications from students with a wide variety of backgrounds. Go to: www.sunderland.ac.uk/research/

STUDENT ExperIence
Learning in a vibrant multi-cultural environment has really helped to enrich Pharmacy student Abdulaziz Alazemi’s time at university. He said: “The reason I chose the University of Sunderland is that it is a beautiful, quiet city by the sea and the University is well-known for the quality of its Pharmacy courses. “The University is so welcoming to international students and I love learning in an environment that has so many cultures – when I’m sitting in a lecture, I’m next to someone from India, China, Ireland as well as England, and I’m really enjoying that.”
Abdulaziz Alazemi, from Kuwait MPharm
Like many people, Levinia was initially confused about which university she wanted to go to. “My instructors suggested that studying abroad would widen my job prospects. So after comparing University rankings, scholarships and tuition fees, the University came out on top. “The lecturers are approachable and supportive – even if it is a personal issue. My course has given me the technical knowledge to apply in practical situations, which, coupled with some fantastic help from the Careers and Employability Service, has been instrumental in the fact that I have already secured a graduate position in Cummins Turbo Technologies. “Sunderland helps you make the most of your degree, take on challenges, step out of your comfort zone and help change your life.”
Levinia Mathews, from India 50

Having already completed his MSc in Public Health at the University, Philip knew the University was the perfect place to continue his studies. He said: “I was taken by the University’s diversity, the rich teaching and learning culture and it’s such a friendly city too. “The University is an ideal place for multidisciplinary research, with supportive facilities, a conducive learning environment and a lively campus life. The research programme journey can be a long and lonely one, but here at Sunderland you are never alone thanks to excellent supervisory support.”
Philip Anyanwu, from Nigeria PhD Pharmacy, Health and Wellbeing
Mechanical engineering graduate Tai Xiang Zeng enrolled at the University of Sunderland to do a Masters in International Management as he was keen to further his studies at an English university. Choosing Sunderland not only gave the keen football fan the added bonus of being on the doorstep of a Premiership club, but the sport has also helped him to make new friends at university. He said: “At the University of Sunderland we have a Chinese football team and we play other teams made up of students from other countries – it’s a great way to make new friends. “Living in Sunderland, I also get to watch Premiership football at the Stadium of Light, which is a fantastic bonus to the academic knowledge I have gained here.”
Tai Xiang Zeng, from China
First class support and numerous opportunities to meet new people helped Bulgarian student Tanita Petrova to quickly feel at home at Sunderland. She said: “I chose to study abroad for the challenge – I had heard great things about British education and the courses that Sunderland offers. “I was so nervous when I first came here though as I had never travelled abroad before – but the fact that I had someone to pick me up from the airport was really great, as was the support from staff. “The University has also given me many opportunities to gain work-related skills to make me more employable after I graduate.”
Tanita Petrova, from Bulgaria BSc (Hons) Criminology and MSc Psychology

Our Graduates Studying at Sunderland helped media and marketing graduate Yazhu Kong land a prime job in one of the world’s largest electronics and home appliance companies. Graduate Yazhu works as an air conditioning Marketing Director (Overseas) at Haier, in China, and she believes the first-class education she received at the University of Sunderland helped her to stand out from the competition to launch her career. She said: “When I started to research universities, Sunderland stood out as it has a global reputation for providing quality education and was highly ranked for student experience, which was important for me as I was travelling alone to a new country. “I can honestly say my time at Sunderland was an unforgettable experience and definitely helped me in my career.”

“I chose the University of Sunderland because of its facilities and its connections with industry. I enjoyed my course which was very technical and practical, and the facilities allowed me to turn my designs into a reality. The general support, standard of lectures and workshops was at a high level. “I loved that Sunderland is close to the coast, and Newcastle and Durham. I made friends with other international students and learnt about different cultures. The Students’ Union’s sport and night life allowed me to socialise with people outside of my course. “A highlight of my studies was undertaking my work placement in motorsport. This provided me with a clear direction, and the desire to pursue a career as a Design Engineer in motorsport. “I now specialise in chassis design for F1 cars.”
Thomas Cepe, from Czech Republic Composite Design Engineer, Ferrari F1, Modena, Italy BSc (Hons) Automotive Design and Technology

“Graduating with a degree from Sunderland allowed me to go to London to continue my Masters Degree in International Business and Management. After that I was offered a job as a Business System Analyst at the world’s largest oil and gas company, Saudi Aramco, in the Domestic Joint Ventures Department. Without the University of Sunderland I would not be where I am right now. “The University helped develop my knowledge and skills thanks to its amazing tutors, who are industry professionals. They have so much expertise and enthusiasm; they were extremely friendly and helpful all the way through my course. “The whole place is full of inspiration. I’m not surprised that Business at Sunderland was voted best in the North East for Student Satisfaction (Sunday Times University Guide 2014). “Sunderland is a place for new opportunities that you never thought could be possible. It gave me valuable time to really think about my future and prepare for success.”
Ahmed N. Al-Nasr, from Saudi Arabia Business System Analyst, Saudi Aramco BA (Hons) Business Management

It is wonderful to be back in the city I fell in love with. “Thanks to the University of Sunderland I’ve been challenged, changed and ultimately, I’ve grown as a person. UNIVERSITY‘S
TERMS AND CONDITIONS By enrolling each year, students agree to the Terms and Conditions specified in the Student Handbook issued at the time. The current Terms and Conditions are set out below. These Terms and Conditions may be varied by the University from time to time. Course directories and prospectuses describe programmes available from the University of Sunderland (‘the University’). Every effort is made to ensure that all details are correct at the time of going to press but these may be subject to alteration. Should you become a student of the University, you will receive further documents describing the teaching, examination, assessment and other educational services (‘the educational services’) offered by the University, including details of fees payable. In the event of any inconsistency between the information contained in a Directory/Prospectus and the information set out in these further documents then the further documents will prevail. The University will take all reasonable steps to provide the educational services in the manner set out in each Directory/Prospectus and in those further documents. The University does not, however, guarantee their provision. The educational services, programmes, facilities and other arrangements for students described in each Directory/Prospectus are regularly reviewed and are naturally subject to change from time to time, sometimes without notice. In order to continue to provide high quality educational services to students, the University may make variations to the contents or methods of delivery of programmes and modules, discontinue and merge or combine programmes and modules in response to; professional, statutory and/or regulatory body requirements, feedback from students and/or external examiners, the need to enhance student performance and achievement, changes to the theory in an area of research and/or changes to the practices around the subject or its delivery. In the event of any changes to programmes or modules, or the discontinuation of any programme, the University will use reasonable endeavours to help affected students switch to a suitable alternative programme or alternative HE provider if they wish to do so. Further details of the University’s process for change can be found in its ‘Process for Modifications to Programmes and Modules’ on the University’s website: http://bit.ly/AQH-E1 The University will not be deemed to be in breach of these Terms and Conditions, or otherwise liable to its students in any manner whatsoever, for any failure or delay in its ability to provide the educational services due to an event beyond the reasonable control of the University. Such an event, for the purposes of these Terms and Conditions, means any cause preventing the University from providing the educational services arising from or is attributable to acts, events, omissions or accidents beyond the reasonable control of the University including, without limitation, strikes, lockouts or other industrial disputes, protests, war or national emergency, an act of terrorism, riot, civil commotion, malicious damage, compliance with any law or government order, rule, regulation or direction, breakdown of plant or machinery, utilities failure, fire, explosion, an Act of God, flood, storm, epidemic or other natural disaster, or default or delays of suppliers or sub-contractors. The University will use all reasonable endeavours to minimise the resultant disruption to those services. It is the students’ responsibility to familiarise themselves with and to ensure compliance with the requirements of any professional body which they wish to join either before or after graduation. Students should be aware that a change in their circumstances whilst studying (e.g. acquiring criminal convictions or certain physical or mental ailments or illnesses) may affect their continued compliance and in such cases should be notified both to the relevant professional body and to the University for clarification. It should be noted that criminal convictions may not necessarily be a bar to study, but should nevertheless be notified to the University.
64
Where appropriate, registration on a programme may be conditional upon compliance with any requirements arising from legislation or regulations made from time to time in relation to the protection of children and vulnerable adults (including a Disclosure and Barring Service check), and/or the submission of a Medical Clearance form. International students are responsible for complying with the terms of their visa, and with Immigration legislation as in force at the relevant time more generally. International students may be required to provide evidence to the University that they are complying with these terms. International students studying at the University on a Tier 4 visa are required as a condition of their contract to maintain English language skills at least at the level required on entry to the University for the duration of their programme. The University reserves the right to re-test students at any point during their programme. The University cannot accept responsibility and expressly excludes liability for damage to or loss of students’ property whilst on University premises or the transfer of computer viruses to students’ equipment unless caused by the negligence of the University. Whilst registered as students of the University, the University requires its students to familiarise themselves with and comply with its ‘Rules in Respect of Student Conduct and Discipline’, copies of which can be obtained from the University and can be found on its website: www.sunderland.ac.uk/regulations The University requires its students, as a condition of enrolment, to ensure the payment to the University in each academic year of academic fees and charges made up of the tuition fee and any other additional charges pertaining to the programme upon which they are enrolled. Additional charges may include but are not limited to payment for study materials provided by the University such as creative art materials, computer disks, and special paper or learning packs which are intended as cheaper alternatives to textbooks, and the cost of mandatory field trips included in the programme. Students should be aware that if a student has not paid the due academic fees and charges the University reserves the right to neither allow the student to register nor continue in their studies, nor award a degree or other certification and reserves the right to take action to recover outstanding monies.
