OUR HISTORY Sunderland has been an important centre for education since 674AD, when Benedict Biscop built St Peter’s Church and monastery. Here we take a look back at some of the key developments of the 20th and 21st Century which have helped create the modern University of Sunderland…

Sunderland Technical College opened, built at a cost of £27,800. The Principal, Mr Branford, was also responsible for the School of Art, run from the Town Hall.

Departments of Naval Architecture and Pharmacy established.

The College of Arts and Crafts moved to new accommodation in Ashburne House.

Special courses for the armed forces and the Ministry of Labour introduced during the Second World War.

Sunderland Teacher Training College became ‘women only’ and remained that way until 1959.

Priestman Building opened, home to the departments of Mathematics and Mining.

Priestman Library at the Sunderland Technical College – now part of the Sunderland University Priestman Building was named after philanthropist Sir John Priestman.

Work begins on the new £9m Enterprise and Innovation Hub

You can discuss any area of health in a confidential and safe setting, and we also partner with an organisation called ‘night line’ to offer term-time out of hour’s service to ensure our students are safe and healthy during their time with us.

ENTERPRISE The BEC: Business Enterprise Certificate This is a free 12 week programme for students who are interested in learning about enterprise and entrepreneurship. INTERNSHIPS At the end of their course, some students will have the opportunity to do a 12 week internship within one of our busy departments at the University, such as Business Development, Academic Support, IT, Marketing and Admissions or HR, developing vital employability, office and IT skills. Ullas Kumar has made an impact during his internship in Marketing and Recruitment at the University of Sunderland in London (UoSL). “Studying in the heart of the world’s financial centre was one of the motivators. In my opinion there is no better place to study business and management other than London.” Following completion of his MBA in Marketing, Ullas was offered a three-month internship and has project managed areas of social media, podcasting and a new University of Sunderland in London blog. The spectacular Hyde Park, Regents Park and St James Park are all in the centre of London and within short travelling distance you’ll find the majestic Royal Richmond Park, Bushy Park and Hampstead Heath. AccommodatIon If you are moving to London for your studies, one important consideration is where you are going to live while you are studying.

Students should be aware that a change in their circumstances whilst studying (e.g. acquiring criminal convictions or certain physical or mental ailments or illnesses) may affect their continued compliance and in such cases should be notified both to the relevant professional body and to the University for clarification. It should be noted that criminal convictions may not necessarily be a bar to study, but should nevertheless be notified to the University. Where appropriate, registration on a programme may be conditional upon compliance with any requirements arising from legislation or regulations made from time to time in relation to the protection of children and vulnerable adults,(including a Disclosure and Barring Service check), and/or the submission of a Medical Clearance form. International students are responsible for complying with the terms of their visa, and with Immigration legislation as in force at the relevant time more generally. International students may be required to provide evidence to the University that they are complying with these terms. International students studying at the University on a Tier 4 visa are required as a condition of their contract to maintain English language skills at least at the level required on entry to the University for the duration of their programme. The University reserves the right to re-test students at any point during their programme. The University cannot accept responsibility and expressly excludes liability for damage to or loss of students’ property whilst on University

premises or the transfer of computer viruses to students’ equipment unless caused by the negligence of the University. Whilst registered as students of the University, the University requires its students to familiarise themselves with and comply with its ‘Rules in Respect of Student Conduct and Discipline’, copies of which can be obtained from the University and can be found on its website: www.sunderland.ac.uk/regulations The University requires its students, as a condition of enrolment, to ensure the payment to the University in each academic year of academic fees and charges made up of the tuition fee and any other additional charges pertaining to the programme upon which they are enrolled. Additional charges may include but are not limited to payment for study materials provided by the University such as creative art materials, computer disks, and special paper or learning packs which are intended as cheaper alternatives to textbooks, and the cost of mandatory field trips included in the programme. Students should be aware that if a student has not paid the due academic fees and charges the University reserves the right to neither allow the student to register nor continue in their studies, nor award a degree or other certification and reserves the right to take action to recover outstanding monies. The University may process sensitive personal data about you, such as details about your mental or physical health and/or disability, information concerning ethnicity, domicile, religious or political opinions, sexuality, criminal record, or alleged criminal activity for the purpose of planning or monitoring. In limited circumstances the University may also disclose this sensitive personal data to third parties, where there is a legitimate need or obligation, during or after your study. The University undertakes to maintain student data in secure conditions and to process and disclose data only within the terms of its Data Protection Notification.
