Fiber and Yarn

Assignment was to search & creat linear material from nature that can be spun.

It should have leanth, strenth and cohesiveness. I select the coconut leaf. as we all know the coconut coir is a textile material and leaves are used for making mats, hand fan and huts. I found the leaf spine very intresting in turms of strength and linierity. The spine of leaves with which blades of leaves are attached is called “RACHIS”.

COCONUT LEAF

my source place was nid back feild, where the gardner collects the cut plants.it was dry leaf so my time to get it dry was saved.

PROCESS(SPINNING) * REMOVE THE LEAVES BLADE FROM “RACHIS”.

*PEEL APART THE LONG SPINES.

*PUT THEM IN TO WATER. *AFTER 1 HOURS TAKE THEM OUT. *COLLECT THEM AND TWIST THEM TOGETHER.

*THEN MAKE BUNCH AS SHOWN IN SKETCH SO THAT IT WILL BE EASY TO HANDLE.

*THEN AGAIN PUT IT IN TO WATER FOR 24 HOURS SO THAT PULP GET SWOLLEN. * (AS SHWON IN SKETCH) BEAT IT ON A PLATEFORM.

*NOW OPEN IT (UNTWIST IT). *PULL OUT THE LOOSE FIBERS.

*NOW SPIN THE PULP FREE FIBRES TOGETHER AS SHOWN IN SKETCH (NOTE=SPIN IN WET CONDITION)

I TRED TO GET THREE DIFFERNT THICKNESS OF ROPES OF IT.

In first attampt of making rope of RACHIS ,I got a very course rope. it has un-removed pulp and projected fiber in ropes.

so I tried to clean the pulp throughly and kept the fibers wet while spinning. i got better results and finer count.

further step was to analysing the finest limit of RACHIS.third attampt, i found it was difficult to handle beecause of continouse breakage and untwisting of fibers.

By my experience I found the RACHIS is a good rope material but not a thread material.
